Invermere issues climate change actions report District plans to hire environmental planner

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The District of Invermere recently made public its much-anticipated climate change resiliency briefing and actions report.

The briefing, which has been a strategic priority for the district since this past summer, outlines measures Invermere has taken over the past decade to help mitigate climate change, or to become more environmentally friendly, and concluded by outlining the district’s intent to hire an environmental planner on contract to further such measures going forward.

Some local residents, however, later expressed dissatisfaction at the report, commenting that they had expected the report not to be a summary of past efforts, but rather a plan for future actions.

“The proposed 2022 budget...includes money, if approved by council, that can be used to support the hiring of a contract environmental planner to support some of the climate change actions described in this report,” said Invermere’s Chief Administrative Officer, Andrew Young, during the Invermere council meeting at which the briefing report became public.

“I look forward to bringing an environmental planner on staff. I fully support that...It’s another step forward for the district,” said Invermere Councillor Greg Anderson.

Invermere Mayor, Al Miller, noted that although the district has taken some steps to mitigate climate change in the past, much more remains to be done “and this new job that we’re trying to fill will help in that way.”

In introducing the report, Young explained it contains a lengthy overview of climate change-related policy and directions, and quickly ran through them for the benefit of council and the public gallery at the meeting.

There were 35 measures in total, stretching back from present day to 2007. A few of the efforts listed are pending or in progress, but most have been already implemented and are currently in effect.

“It is clear the District of Invermere has done a great deal of work and taken multiple actions over many years to help make the community of Invermere more resilient to climate change impacts and threats, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions... while at the same time the municipality has been realistic in its actions given the limited resources that are available to small communities — monies, people, expertise, time,” said Young adding that “nonetheless the district is taking further actions to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by, for example, making improvements to its vehicle fleet, buildings...The actions that the district has taken, and is undertaking, are intended to encourage responsible behaviours by everyone in Invermere — government, businesses, residents, and visitors.”

meeting, mentioned that she was “caught off guard” by the change in name of the ‘climate change resiliency briefing and actions report’ — which throughout the fall had been called the ‘climate change action priorities report’.

“This isn’t what I was expecting...I was expecting new actions that would be primarily in the future,” Flynn told council.

“Sometimes you have to look back to look forward,” replied Miller. “The idea is to stay on track.”

Once Invermere council adopts the district’s 2022 budget, the environmental planner can be hired, added Young. “Then we can begin to actualize things...it is very central to our work plan for 2022.”

Flynn had earlier in the meeting asked Invermere council to give more serious consideration to adopting B.C. Energy Step Code level three (from the new B.C. building code) as soon as possible, instead of waiting until the end of 2022 to do so, when it will be mandated by the provincial government. She countered various reasons that had put forward against adopting Step Code level three during a recent committee of the whole meeting.

“It is not dependent on hiring another staff member in the building services department,” said Flynn, adding software programs and the RDEK community energy advisor will take the bulk of the additional workload that comes with adopting step code level three.

Curbside composting comes to Invermere

Curbside compost collection is coming to Invermere. Grant funding will pay for most of the new program, which will be on the District of Invermere’s 2023 work plan. Some preliminary work may even begin later this year.

Invermere Mayor, Al Miller, told the Pioneer that this means local residents will likely have a green compost bin at their homes in addition to the black garbage bins and blue recycle bins they currently have.

A three-way green and black and blue bin system is already common in many B.C. municipalities, and it’s time Invermere joined them, explained Miller.

The program will involve weekly curbside pickup as well as a central dropoff location, much like Invermere’s garbage collection program, with the central drop-off area likely to be located near the Invermere sewage lagoons.

Miller said that, like Invermere’s garbage and recycling collection program, the composting collection would be run as a contracted service, rather than by district staff.

The program will be partially funded by a provincial grant, given to the

Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) to set up three composting centres through the regional district, including one in Invermere.

Invermere will get $173,000 from that grant for the composting program, which will cover 66 per cent of the program’s cost, with the district kicking in the remaining 33 per cent ($86,500).

“Then we will have full-on composting which will be a major plus for our landfill. Or a major minus for our landfill, depending on how you look at it, as it will mean much less waste going to the landfill. It will extended the life our landfill considerably,” said Miller.

He cautioned that people will need to be careful about making sure to only put out their composting bins for pickup a few hours before curbside pickup times, as Invermere is certainly bear country.

“People will need to follow the rules.

Don’t put it out the night before. It’s just like our curbside garbage pickup,” said Miller, adding he doesn’t think it will be too hard for residents to follow the rules and the program will be great for the district overall.

“We’ve tried a few smaller scale composting programs in the past. This is different, it’s on a major scale. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, Jan. 17 through Jan. 23 the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 55 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, Jan. 17, a cell phone was turned into the Columbia Valley RCMP. The cell phone was reportedly found on 3rd Avenue in Invermere on Jan. 12 . The owner can contact the Columbia Valley RCMP with a description to claim it.

• On Tuesday, Jan. 18, a Nakamura bicycle was turned into the Columbia Valley RCMP. The bike was found abandoned near the Redstreak campground in Radium Hot Springs and appeared to have been there for some time. The owner can contact the Columbia Valley

RCMP to claim it.

• On Friday, Jan. 21, at about 12:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park. The driver of a Toyota RAV4 had reportedly driven over a snowbank then slowly travelled approximately 200 meters before coming to a rest.

The driver was transported to the hospital to be assessed, as it was believed a medical event might have precipitated the collision.

• On Saturday, Jan. 22 at 10:45 p.m., an officer stopped the driver of a GMC pickup for speeding on Highway 93/95 in Windermere.

While speaking to the driver, the officer made the decision to read a mandatory roadside breath demand. The driver complied with the demand and blew two “fails”.

As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

January 27, 2022 ...Continued “Climate” from page 3 Another reason proffered against early adoption is that most new buildings in Invermere are already built to step three, but Flynn said that “even if there is one new home not being built to standard, that is one too many in my opinion. And it will need to be retrofitted in 10 years time at any rate.”

She finished that “this really isn’t early...the District of Invermere should have adopted step three a long time ago. Delaying it has not helped builders, homeowners or building inspectors.”

At the end of the meeting Invermere resident Steph Van de Kemp queried council members if they were reconsidering their approach to early adoption of step three, asking “where is council? What are the next steps?”

Miller responded that council had not yet had an opportunity to discuss it further.

There was some curiosity from audience members, and among councillors, as to where climate change now fits with the district’s strategic priorities. Councillor Kayja Becker noted the briefing report is now complete, “but it’s now not on our current (strategic priorities) chart to hire an environmental planner...I really think

The Columbia Valley Pioneer • 5 that’s low hanging fruit and we should check that one off before moving on to other priorities.”

A few days later, other residents, who were not able to be at the meeting, reached out to the Pioneer, sharing perspectives similar to Flynn and Van de Kemp’s.

“We are extremely disappointed with the report that has been produced. We expected the climate change actions priorities report to be a forward-looking document that prioritizes actions that the district will take to mitigate climate change and increase resilience. Instead, they did the opposite. They took out the word ‘priorities’ from ‘climate change actions priorities report’ and just wrote a ‘climate change actions report’ that summarizes all initiatives and plans from the last 15 years — most of which are extremely outdated, and some of which were never implemented. Instead of looking towards the future and opportunities to do better, they used this report as an opportunity to pat themselves on the back,” wrote local resident Amira Elwakeel, speaking on behalf of local environmental youth group ColumbiYEA, adding that “it is disappointing seeing how far behind the District of Invermere is in its response (to climate change), even compared to other small B.C. municipalities.”

Former teacher launches math book

A well-known former David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) math teacher has just published a book explaining the ins and outs of mathematics.

Anthony Kraayvanger – better known to generations of local students as ‘Mr. K’ — launched The How and Why of Arithmetic just before Christmas. The book is intended for students, teachers and parents or really anyone in Grade 4 or up interested in better understanding what they are doing in math class.

The book has been underway for more than 20 years. Kraayvanger taught math at DTSS (back when it was located where the Columbia Valley Centre currently stands) from

1963 to 1991, teaching the subject, at various points in time, to every grade at the high school. Some time after he left, he realized there was a need for a straightforward-yet-interesting guide to mathematics: essentially a literary version of how he ran his classes.

Kraayvanger set to work, but other interests and occasional computer troubles kept the book from completion. Then last spring Kraayvanger’s daughter came to him with a request for help. She had a friend, Mary, with a granddaughter, Jane, who was in Grade 6 and doing homeschooling during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Jane was a good student, but was completely lost in math.

Winter blues got you down?

By Pioneer staff haley@columbiavalleypioneer.com The days have been steadily shorter, the weather increasingly cold, and the liveliness that accompany Columbia Valley summers is in short supply. Despite living in a place safeguarded by the Purcell mountain ranges to the west and the Canadian Rockies to the right, seasonal depression has still managed to sneak in through the cracks, artfully winding through the crevasses to spread its fangs into the mental health of residents near and far.

According to the Canadian Psychological Association, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) makes up approximately 10 per cent of all reported cases of depression, with 15 per cent of Canadians reporting at least a mild case of SAD in their lifetime.

One could argue that these statistics are probably much higher in actuality due to the stigma surrounding mental health issues as it’s a natural human instinct to act “perfect.” They could also be downplayed in part because of the overall generic symptoms that encompass SAD, similar to those when diagnosing COVID-19 before a test. For those undiagnosed, these feelings are generally dubbed the typical “seasonal depression.”

It is key during these months of decreased sunlight to recognize the symptoms and know how to combat them. You might find your appetite changing, suddenly craving those “comfort foods” that are high in carbohydrates and fat. You might just feel more lethargic, taking longer to climb out of bed and never feeling quite rested. Or you may feel a lack of passion for things you remember loving, overwhelmed by seemingly unwarranted feelings of stress, guilt, hopelessness, or mere distraction.

This is normal, and you are normal for feeling that way.

There are ways to “fix” these feelings and regulate emotions once again, even before the days are bathed in sunlight rich in vitamin D once more.

There’s an old story in which a Cherokee man tells his grandson about the lifelong battle that happens inside people. In short, he shares that there are two “wolves” inside us all: “One is Evil, it is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego; the other is good, it is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” When asked which wolf wins, the grandfather simply states, “The one you feed.”

The trick is to not feed into these feelings of despair, and in not doing so, starve such emotions out of you. Although undoubtedly easier said than done, eating a healthy diet, living an active lifestyle, and sticking to a regular sleeping schedule can be a good start. Vitamin D supplements, increased exposure to natural light, or introducing oneself to light therapy can also prove helpful. Once your mood improves even slightly, reaching out to family and friends can act as that ultimate “refresh” on your emotional state.

The main thing to takeaway is that you are not alone. So let’s scrap the formalities, normalize the stigma and talk about it.

Combatting climate change Dear Editor: On Jan. 11, the District of Invermere (DOI) released a report titled, “climate change resiliency briefing – actions report,” whose contents would leave one with the impression that the climate crisis is not a crisis, but a hiccup. It is not. This is the crisis that has scorched and drowned our province.

This is the crisis whose consequences, such as wildfires and heatwaves, are eroding our health. This is the crisis that has caused me to break down in tears countless times, not just because I fear what’s to come but because I fear those in positions of influence are not taking this seriously enough.

Despite what its title suggests, there are few actual “actions” named in this report, as most of the items listed are vague objectives with little data provided to show if they were met. Further, this report primarily summarizes past actions and commitments and gives no insight into the DOI’s next steps in addressing climate change.

As an example of the points listed above, the DOI references its 2007 commitment to carbon-neutral operations by 2012. However, they provided no details about whether they met this goal nor how they would monitor progress. Another example: the DOI mentions their commitments to reduce and eventually eliminate their contributions to the degradation of nature, the build-up of

synthetic materials in the environment, and their reliance on non-renewables. This is a list of objectives, not actions, and nowhere is it stated what specific steps they took to meet these targets. We acknowledge that the DOI has taken action on climate change. We also recognize that it is important to have a baseline inventory of commitments and actions.

However, it is crucial that this inventory reflects the situation’s reality by being transparent about knowledge gaps and unmet targets. Further, it is also essential that this inventory detail what specific actions were taken, and how progress was monitored and evaluated.

Climate change has and will continue to impact every facet of life, from our health to our livelihoods, right down to our fundamental needs for food, water, and shelter. Making climate action a priority equates to making community well-being a priority. We urge the DOI to continue making climate change a strategic priority and give deep consideration to their next steps, as the decisions they make-- or lack thereof-- will profoundly impact the success of our community.

“We’ve been here ever since,” Kraayvanger told the Pioneer. Through his nearly three decades at DTSS, Kraavanger began by teaching the youngest grades and gradually started teaching older students, until “eventually I had taught the entire B.C. high school math curriculum,” he said.

Teaching math always had a special appeal to Kraayvanger.

“There’s an elegance to it,” he said. “A number is really just a virtual concept in my head. But I use a symbol for it, because if I want to communicate with you, I need to use a symbol, and you have to share my understanding of what that symbol means. And then everything else flows from that... Mathematics is just playing around with symbols. It’s like a giant jigsaw puzzle. You start putting it together, but if you only have one piece here or one piece there, you’ll never get the whole picture. You have to understand what you’re aiming for, you have to understand what the big picture will be, if you want to be able to complete the puzzle.”

Of course Kraayvanger was keen to help if he could, so he mailed off the parts of the book he had finished. He decided that if what he’d written helped Jane, he’d finally complete the book, and if not, then perhaps he’d put the project aside once and for all. Mary wrote back after the end of the school year, with effusive praise, and so Kraayvanger set to work with a renewed sense of purpose, at last getting ‘The How and Why of Arithmetic’ ironed out. The book came back from the printers in mid December, and Kraayvanger has been selling them ever since.

“I can’t understand why there are still so many people struggling with math...it doesn’t have to be complicated,” Kraayvanger told the Pioneer.

Kraayvanger, who is now 86, spent his boyhood in London, during the Second World War, where his dad ran an import-export business. In 1949 the family moved to Holland. Kraavanger spoke not a word of Dutch, but was enrolled in Grade 8 and in a local Dutch school. He managed to adapt, although he spent five years (two years longer than normal) in junior high, an experience that he told the Pioneer helped later shape his approach as a teacher, since he knew firsthand what it was like to struggle as a student.

He eventually came to Canada in 1956, landing in Montreal on a freighter, and on a recommendation from a fellow passenger, bought a one-way train ticket to Lethbridge. There he found employment on a nearby farm, and then worked a number of interesting and varied jobs over the next several years.

He met and married his wife, Marilyn, and with a baby on the way, decided to go to teacher’s college in Nova Scotia. Love of Libraries

This week’s column was written by Blair McFarlane, Community Outreach Library Assistant at Invermere Public Library, which is located at 646 4th Street. Visit their website or call 250-342-6416 for more information.

A library can be stocked with the newest and hottest titles. It can have print services, a 3D printer and even robots. But it is just a building full of great stuff until our patrons come in and make it a library. It’s the people who make it the community gathering place where our imaginations soar. The library without its patrons is like a book with no words or pictures. We couldn’t operate without you, and our library is especially lucky to have such great people walk through the doors.

One of our most dedicated library patrons was Ray Crook, who passed away in December at the age of 103.

Back in 1963, he was one of the people responsible for getting the community library incorporated as a public library association by the province (find the history of the library on our website). Ray made the library a regular part of his routine and was the embodiment of a caring, engaged community citizen. Even though he’s gone, Ray is still supporting the library—he graciously named the library a recipient of $10,000 in his will. We are most thankful for this donation, and will ensure the use of the funds honours Ray’s legacy and love for the library. We will share those plans once they’ve been decided upon.

Ray went absolutely above and beyond in his support of the library. If you feel inspired by his legacy, we are looking for two new trustees to join the Library Board. We need people who care about the library, and want our valley to have the best resources and community hub possible. The heart of the library is our passion for community care and we would love for you to be a part

The preferred candidate(s) will have experience in community development, economic development, business or industry and be willing to attend quarterly meetings.

The operation of the Commission is governed by the Local Government Act and RDEK bylaws. The CVCEDAC must consist of not more than fifteen (15) members. The CVCEDAC provides advice and recommendations to the RDEK Board and Columbia Valley Directors on matters related to economic development in the Columbia Valley.

The Commission meets approximately quarterly and participation in other meetings or events may be requested.

It was chosen first because it is the site of quite a lot of backcountry recreation, almost all of it unmanaged, and because it contains important wildlife habitat and environmentally sensitive areas.

“We are seeing increasing recreation pressures in the Columbia Valley. It’s time to be proactive about safeguarding the core values that make this region an exceptional destination for a wide range of outdoor recreation activities,” said initiative co-chair and Village of Radium Mayor, Clara Reinhardt, in a press release. Many of these pressures have been heightened by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has prompted more people than ever to get outdoors.

The Steamboat area includes six public recreation sites (with a total of 15 campsites), as well as many informal campsites (especially near Radium), the designated Forster Creek Trail winter recreation trail (managed by the Windermere Valley Snowmobile Society), some 17 kilometres of unauthorized non-motorized trails (often used by mountain bikers), 81 kilometres of unauthorized single-track motorized trails used by dirt bikers, and five kilometres of double-track trails used by ATVs. A total of 84 per cent of the Steamboat area (28,000 hectares) is classified as an ungulate winter range, used during the winter by local ungulate species such as elk, deer, and moose. The world famous Columbia River Wetlands runs through the Steamboat area, and there are also five species at risk with important habitat in the area.

Four highway deaths last week near Radium Hot Springs Submitted by John Bergenske Conservation Director, Wildsight Failure to act has resulted in the death of at least four bighorn sheep over five days in the last week alone. This is the latest in a spate of deaths decimating the Radium bighorn sheep herd that saw an additional 13 highway mortalities in 2021.

The One Mile Hill leading into Radium Hot Springs has long been known as a dangerous spot for both motorists and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. This stretch of highway is the gateway to the Columbia Valley which sees heavy traffic, especially on weekends and tourist-heavy seasons. The problem has been exacerbat-

ed by the prolonged closures of Highway 1, which forces traffic to detour through Radium.

This highway also carries heavy trucks, particularly logging and chip trucks, up and down the valley.

Last week there were collisions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday — each resulting in a dead ram. Then on Friday an ewe was killed.

Though local residents and conservationists have been calling for action for years, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) has yet

But even if these are committed to, it will certainly take too long to deal with the ongoing slaughter.

MOTI needs to take action to protect bighorn sheep and motorists while sheep are near the highway. Most collisions occur in a three kilometre-strip of the hill which has a passing lane and 90 km speed limit — clearly proven to be a recipe for disaster. MOTI has thus far refused calls to reduce speeds and close the passing lane. The existing warning signs have proved ineffective. Reduced speeds that are enforced, along with active signage that warns travellers when Bighorn sheep gather on hill just south of Radium Hot Springs on Jan. 22.

Radium welcomes visitors into its community with an impressive $300,000 public art sculpture paying tribute to the bighorn sheep. The irony is not lost that, mere metres from this exhibit, sheep are meeting their demise from those very drivers. A few minutes’ delay in arrival is a small price to pay to protect both motorists and the sheep who are this community’s icon.

There is no excuse for MOTI not to be treating this section of highway the same way as they do an active construction zone whenever sheep are present in the area. A lack of action is inviting the next accident to happen, and it may not be just sheep that are the victims.

Wetlands Workforce tackles the root of current climate crisis “There’s the future that we need to look at”

This is of particular importance to the Columbia Valley, home to the Columbia Wetlands, as it is one of the longest undisturbed wetland ecosystems in North America, measuring well over 180 km in length, and home to a variety of different species of fish and wildlife.

A mere year after launching, over 70 project sites have already been established and 40 key species have been positively impacted through their work. The workforce project has also successfully provided safe and meaningful jobs to over 100 people, particularly targeting those affected by the recent recession, as well as women, people

The B.C. Wildlife Federation’s Wetlands Workforce has been diligently working in high gear to do the impossible— combat the long-term effects of climate change.

What is undeniably no easy feat, the workforce dug their heels into the mud— literally and figuratively—with the goal of preserving the health and biodiversity of B.C.’s wetlands and watersheds for generations to come.

The project, officially launching just over a year ago, is a collaboration between First Nations and conservation organizations, with the ultimate goal of maintaining native species, improving wetland management, developing better wetland inventories, collaborating with indigenous communities, and creating safe and meaningful work.

Albeit not the first organization to tackle the issue of environmental distress, the Wetlands Workforce approaches the topic with a revolutionary lens— seeking the help from First Nations local to the area at hand.

within the Kootenay region, the workforce’s key point of focus was on visits to the wetlands itself. Here, they were accompanied by local Elders and knowledge holders, where they created opportunities to learn about cultural teachings, history of the land, and traditional ecological knowledge.

The Wetlands Workforce also initiated a Wetlands Ecosystem Services Protocol (WESP) model, a standardized method for assessing the function and value of the services provided by wetlands specific to B.C. regions.

The Field data and maps will support a longer term objective of creating a wetland inventory for the province.

The project was supported through the Healthy Watersheds Initiative, which is delivered by the Real Estate Foundation of BC and Watersheds BC, with financial aid from the Province of British Columbia as part of its $10 billion COVID-19 response.

The workforce brings with it a sense of resiliency, a refreshing change of pace to the usual melancholic hopelessness that has been prevalent this past year amidst the ongoing pandemic.

“It just transformed into this most amazing project with incredible people that have such a deep desire for the work. It’s truly in their heart,” says Cote, passion for the project evident in her voice. “I’ve worked many, many jobs in my life. And this is probably the one that really holds my heart. It’s so incredibly important to our indigenous communities and to our indigenous way of life.”

Firefighting veteran becomes new Radium Fire Chief

Being a volunteer firefighter is also a great way to acquire a new skill set that is completely different from the skills he already had through being a hotel operator in the tourism industry, he explained.

“When I first started as a firefighter I said ‘I’m never going to be an officer’ but look at me today, now I’m chief,” Carr said with a chuckle.

Prestige Radium Hot Springs Resort Manager and Radium Fire Department veteran, Trevor Carr, is the new Radium Fire Chief.

Carr, who has been a member of the village’s fire department since 2016, started in the new volunteer role as chief after longtime Radium Fire Chief, Dave Dixon, retired in December.

Carr added that part of what he loves about firefightings is that “it’s always changing. There’s always advances and new things being learned about how to put out a fire or cut a car open. It never stagnates.

It’s always evolving.”

Submitted by Mark Teterenko The Rockies had themselves quite the week scheduled to go up against the first place Nelson Leafs (Neil Murdoch Division) on Friday, Jan. 21 before facing another first placed team in the Kimberley Dynamiters (Eddie Mountain Division) on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Player families were also visiting for this week’s matchups, and although some team/family activities had to be canceled due to provincial guidelines/restrictions, the players still took in the opportunity to see and be around their families for the weekend. Coach Briar McNaney commented on having families in town for the weekend: “I think the families being in town was a good thing for the players. For a lot of them, this is their first time living away from home, so it must have been a relief for some. We felt that [the weekend] went well and the

families looked like they enjoyed it.”

Friday’s game against Nelson was a battle. After going down 1-0 after the first period, Nelson came out strong with a second goal just four minutes into the second period. Defenceman Dylan Malarchuk (19) cut the Leafs lead in half just after the six minute mark, but Nelson continued to put pucks on net as they scored twice more before the 15 minute mark to put them up 4-1. Not in any place to back down, the Rockies continued to grind away and at the 16:28 mark of the second period, Kaelan Shelton (21) scored to bring the Rockies back within two before the third period. Period number three started off great for the Rockies as Reed Sparrow (7) was able to put one by the Nelson goaltender at the 2:21 mark, but sadly the comeback was cut short after that. The Leafs pulled away in the third scoring twice more before the final buzzer sounded and handed the Rockies only their sec-

ond loss in the last 10 games. Rockies goaltender Grady Nicholas (33) saved 51 of 57 shots in the 6-3 loss.

“I feel that we played well below our expectations/ standards on Friday” said Coach Briar McNaney. “Credit to Nelson, they brought a lot of energy especially at the start of the game, but we just didn’t have “it” on Friday night. Whether that was due to facing a team that we haven’t played in a while (and a very good team at that), having parents in town, outside distractions, changing pre-game routines, etc. I don’t know, but we let ourselves down.”

The very next day, the Rockies had the opportunity to bounce right back into the win column against Kimberley but they knew it wouldn’t be easy. The Dynamiters were first to get on the scoresheet during Saturday’s game.

Chapman, Edward Alan April 26, 1944January 8, 2022

Alan was born in North Battleford SK on April 26, 1944 to Bill and Nellie Chapman. Alan spent his early days in Frenchman Butte busy curling, hunting, playing hockey and baseball with his many cousins in Fort Pitt. At one time he played first base on a team that was all cousins and 9 hit left handed.

He attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where he met Patricia (Currie), his future wife, playing inter-mural basketball. He completed his Bachelor of Education at UBC and later completed his Master’s degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane WA. He represented the Windermere District teachers, on the bargaining committee with BCTF and was a representative for the BC College of Teachers on the Teacher Qualification Board.

Alan and Pat moved to Invermere, BC in 1968 and enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle, curling, golfing, hunting and spending time on their property. He taught Industrial Arts at the high school for 20 years and was proud to know that many of his students went on to successful careers in Industry. During these years he volunteered many hours coaching and driving teams for various sporting events. In 1988 he and Pat had the opportunity to move to Australia for the year on a teacher exchange and greatly enjoyed the experience and the travel.

In 1990, they moved to Brunei (SE Asia) for a 2 year teaching opportunity. 11 Years later (!) they retired back to Canada and moved to Wynndel BC in 2005 to be closer to their grandchildren and enjoy the Creston Valley. Living in Creston his biggest joy was going for walks with family along the dikes at the Wildlife centre; his eagle eye usually spotted birds or animal life before the rest of us.

Alan loved to travel and he and Pat enjoyed many unique opportunities and often reminisced about their travels.

Highlights include; Asia and the crazy roads and drivers in Myanmar, Safari in Africa, golfing and exploring in Australia, wintering in Arizona and cruising through Antarctica to name just a few. Golf was a good excuse to travel and meet new people and over the years Alan and Pat golfed at hundreds of courses world wide and he even got a hole in one in Brunei.

Always busy, Alan helped build many houses for friends and family. In Wynndel, he had a dedicated work shop “The factory” where he designed and built furniture pieces for Pat and friends, rolling kitchen islands, coat racks, and pieces for Rob’s office including the main reception desk at Cavell Street Dental. The most recent big projects were custom kitchen cabinets for the girls.

Alan’s dry sense of humour kept him positive during his long battle with cancer. The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and support personnel who were involved in his care. In particular Dr. John Griffioen, Dr. Johnny Chang, the Shopper’s Drug Mart Pharmacy personnel and Dr. Kieth Lowden and the Cranbrook Oncology team.

Alan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia, daughters Cathy, and Carrie, and her family Rob, Andrew and Mark Armstrong, his brother Kenneth (Barbara) Chapman and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

S OBITUARY S Milne, Betty 1926-2021

It is with sadness the family of Betty Milne advise that Betty passed away on December 8th, 2021 in Sherwood Park, Alberta at the age of 95. She is survived by her children Carol (Dave), Julie (Barry), Dave (Sharon), 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was quite a lady and led quite a life!

One of eight children, Betty was born and raised on a farm in Claresholm, Alberta. She met her husband of 70+years, a dapper RCAF pilot, conducting flight schools in Claresholm. Following their marriage, they lived in various parts of Canada as well as internationally in Iran, Nigeria, and England. She and Jim settled full-time in Invermere, British Columbia in 1985. Betty followed her passions for skiing (albeit with a few incidents over the years), swimming, golf and curling. The consummate hostess, she would always welcome family, friends and others into her home. She was always very interested and supportive of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty will best be remembered for baking her world famous chocolate chip cookies.

The amplified version says it this way.

There are two points I would like to touch on here, the first is, I believe it is Gods will, that we live a Kingdom life. Why would He ask us to seek after it, if it isn’t His will to give it to us? And what is a Kingdom life? It is all laid out very nicely in Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7.
