Invermere woman and friend begin five-month Y2Y traverse mer. They began a week ago on Thursday, May 12, heading out on foot from West Yellowstone at the Targhee Pass trailhead near the three-way state border between Many Columbia Valley residents enjoy a good long Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and, if all goes well, their hike in the mountains. They both became leaders of the club, guiding their fellow students on outdoor trips. After graduation, both went in different directions (Waterous became an outdoor educator and mountain guide in the Cariboo Mountains and then Montana, before getting into ecology field work for Parks Canada. Cherian-Hall began a career in water quality monitoring).

The Pioneer reached them by cell phone in West Yellowstone — mere hours before they started hiking — to find out where the idea for the trip came from, and what inspired the pair to do it.

“Amaya called me one day two years, during midterms, with the idea of traversing the Y2Y corridor,” Waterous told the Pioneer. “Of course, I was keen immediately, and we started planning, but things — school, jobs, life, then the COVID-19 pandemic — kept getting in the way. With the border (to the U.S.) now open again, we’re going to do it.”

The dream officially became a reality when the pair found out that they were being awarded a 2022 Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s Women’s Expedition Grant which will help the women fund the journey.

“We both love the outdoors, and have plenty of backcountry experience, but we’ve never done something quite this big before,” Cherian-Hall told the Pioneer.

Columbia River Field School is back for third time

By Chadd Cawson Local Journalism Initiative Reporter There is no better way to learn than in the great outdoors, and Columbia River Field School (CRFS) is back for a third time with just that in mind. The field school will take place from June 30 to July 14.

“It is open to any Columbia Basin youth who are 15 to 18 years old on the first day of the trip (which will be June 30 of this year),” says Graeme Lee Rowlands, Wildsight Environmental Programs Coordinator. Students of CRFS will travel the Columbia River by canoe over the course of 15 days, while exploring important aspects of the river’s story through lessons in geography, ecology, hydrology, technology, economics, politics, history, and culture.

“We take sixteen students per year,” says Rowlands. “The 32 youth that participated over the 2018 and 2019 programs came from a total of 16 different Columbia Basin communities. All young people, including Indigenous youth, are encouraged to apply!”

dling in 2018 and then ran for its second year in 2019. Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic CRFS had to anchor this program in 2020 and 2021. “We’re thrilled to be re-launching in 2022,” said Rowlands. “With two years of lockdowns and isolation, CRFS is the perfect opportunity for participants to meet other young people from all over the Basin to learn how to canoe, and practice leadership skills while having fun together in our captivating environment.”

Excerpts from the Columbia River Field School material can be found in the book “A River Captured’’ written by Eileen Delehanty Pearkes, past guest speaker and huge supporter of CRFS. “A River Captured’’ explores the controversial past of the Columbia River Treaty and its impact on Indigenous people and the ecosystems.

Pearkes shares that she would be running, not walking, to be a student with CRFS if she was a young person today. “I believe this program is so special and important as it puts youth in direct contact with the river and the land beneath our feet,” says Pearkes.

RCMP Report Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, May 9 through May 15, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 54 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

• On Tuesday, May 10 at about 12:45 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP officers conducted a road safety check at 14th Street and 15th Avenue in Invermere.

Approximately forty vehicles were checked. No violation tickets were issued, however, a number of warnings were given.

• On Thursday, May 12 at about 12:15 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of an All-Terrain Vehicle accident in a remote area west of Edgewater.

Two adults had been riding their ATV on a Forest Service Road when they hit a washout causing the passenger to be thrown from the ATV. Columbia Valley Search & Rescue located and extricated the passenger with the assistance of a helicopter. The passenger was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

• On Friday, May 13, the owner of a GMC Sierra pickup truck discovered someone had broken one of

the truck windows and stole a new Stihl chainsaw with a 24” bar, a Husqvarna chainsaw with a 20” bar and a set of keys.

The theft occurred sometime overnight while the truck was parked in a lot on Copper Road in Invermere.

• On Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop with the driver of a Toyota Tacoma for failing to stop at a stop sign on Foresters Landing Road in Radium Hot Springs. The driver complied with a mandatory roadside screening device demand and blew two “warns”. As a result, the driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and a violation ticket for failing to obey a stop sign.

• On Friday, May 13 at about 11:45 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop with the driver of a Toyota Tacoma for failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 9th Street in Invermere. While speaking to the driver, the officer formed suspicion the driver had consumed alcohol and read a roadside breath demand. The driver complied with the demand and blew two “fails”. As a result, the driver was issued a ninety-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for thirty days.

Through the looking glass Reflecting on 2021’s observations to better understand our lake’s future

The Lake Windermere Ambassadors direct a community-based water monitoring and citizen-science education program within the Lake Windermere watershed. 2021 marked the fifteenth year of lake monitoring since the Lake Windermere Project began collecting water quality data in 2006. For our first watershed wanderings article of the season, we thought an overview of the work we did and the findings observed during the 2021 monitoring season would be valuable.

In 2021, we collected weekly water quality measurements at three sites on Lake Windermere from late May to September. Measurements include water temperature, turbidity/clarity, pH, conductivity, depth, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved phosphorus and total phosphorous.

2021 saw increased environmental stressors impacting water quality. Five out of the eight water quality parameters deviated from Ministry of Environment

objectives throughout the season. The deviated parameters included temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, specific conductivity, and phosphorous. The outlier in last year’s monitoring season was the extreme temperatures, or the ‘Heat Dome,’ observed at the end of June into the beginning of July. The increased air temperatures directly impacted the water temperatures.

Increased water temperature can affect the chemistry of the lake and the health of aquatic life. B.C. Transit official outline options for adjusting valley’s public transport system

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Local elected officials heard from B.C. Transit representatives about the possibility of tweaking the current public transportation system in the Columbia Valley at a recent Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) committee meeting.

The transit system is jointly managed by B.C. Transit and the RDEK, and this past winter, a proposal was put forward to expand the system by adding a weekend service, increasing the number of bus services running north to Edgewater and Radium, and adding a within-Invermere service. That proposal was put on hold, after the RDEK board of directors voted in early April that no further action be taken to obtain participating area approval for the proposal.

“The directors want to examine what options we have within the existing system...The message was that the directors want a better service, giving the public access to affordable housing, education and employment, but that we first need to work with what we have, work within the existing boundaries, to create a better service,”

RDEK Corporate Officer Tina Hlushak had told the Pioneer in early April, after the directors voted to put a hold on the expansion.

Shortly after the vote, B.C. Transit agreed to meet with the RDEK board during the RDEK’s Thursday, May 12 committee meetings. There, B.C. Transit representatives Erin Sparks and Seth Wright outlined some options to improve the system’s ridership without going through the full-blown expansion proposal.

“There are a bunch of different options on the table,” said Sparks, specifically mentioning that 730 hours of under utilized on-request service could be reallocated to weekends instead.

She did note, however, that there are some severe limits in what can be done with the existing public transportation system, given its extremely small size.

“We’ve had a documented lack of ridership for some years,” said Sparks, citing figures of an average of 10 riders a day on the northern route (which runs from Edgewater through Radium to Invermere), and 14 riders a day on the southern route (which runs from Canal Flats through Fairmont Hot Springs to Invermere).

Don’t tick off ticks

Ticks walk among us yet again. Their small, almost undetectable bodies wander among the outdoor enthusiasts, eagerly looking for their next home. Though British Columbia hosts more than 20 species of ticks, the Rocky Mountain wood tick is the most common to the Columbia Valley region, often found in heavily wooded forests, near bodies of water, or nestled in between rocky areas.

Often we as humans consider ourselves top of the food chain, and, in a sense, this is true. Yet, every creature has a weakness and humans are no exception. Once a tick selects its host, their bite, laced with an anesthetic, prevents immediate detection, giving the small eight-legged creature just enough time to use their small, barbed mouth to latch on to the skin.

The irony that the apex consumer can be crippled by a creature smaller than 10 millimeters long is not lost. The tick’s parasitic nature proves it a force not to be reckoned with.

That being said, true outdoor enthusiasts will not be frightened. Those that grow up amidst the wilderness know how to take proper precautions against these tiny bloodsuckers, so it may seem surprising when someone doesn’t know exactly what to do. Though daunting, the process is inherently simple. First and foremost, to prevent a beloved tick interaction, wear long pants on hikes, making sure to tuck pant cuffs directly into one’s boots. Keeping clothes tucked in can drastically help your odds of avoiding an encounter. This is especially important on overgrown roads or game trails frequented by wild animals, as that tends to be a tick hotspot.

Should you take all precautions and still find yourself a “perfect host,” don’t fret. Make sure to remove the find as quickly as possible, avoiding jerking motions. Rather, with a pair of pointed, clean tweezers or a tick remover, slowly and gently pull the tick out without twisting. Then clean the area thoroughly with antiseptic and monitor health for the following days.

Highway justice Dear Editor, David Milgaard died this week. A man who spent 30 years in prison for a rape and murder he had nothing to do with. A man whose life was completely destroyed by Canada’s justice system. Each of us paid millions in compensation to Mr. Milgaard and I know I am not alone in praying that something must have been learnt. Sadly, events in Edgewater this week have brutally proven that justice is still just a word, not a practice, in Canada.

The latest closure of the Highway 1 has again turned our quiet two-lane highway into a living, horrifying nightmare. I know the vast majority of class 1 drivers are skilled and professional drivers. We all know logging truck drivers regularly drive places that would scare the bejesus out of you and I. The transport drivers we peacefully share our highway with year round. And I am sure that each of those skilled, professional, class 1 drivers would be the first to admit there are class 1 drivers, driving our highways, who should not be permitted to ride a tricycle without strict supervision.

Anyone fortunate enough to have avoided the highway north of Radium lately, should take the short drive to the northern edge of Edgewater. The highway itself is the evidence. Every single corner you go into there are not five or 10 or 20 sets of skid marks. There are dozens upon dozens of big rig skid marks going entirely into the oncoming lanes. There were none before the closures.

Our highways are covered with massive, multi-ton weapons being controlled by the inept. Our highways are also covered with the blood of the elk and grizzlies and deer slaughtered by the very same inept.

Which brings us to mother’s day in Edgewater. What a child of two could have predicted, happened. One of these multi-ton weapons driven by an inept plowed through the big corner in Edgewater, into an oncoming pickup. The driver of the pickup was airlifted by STARS. I pray his life has not been destroyed. The semi-driver was given a violation for crossing the centerline. He then got into his truck and drove off. The inept got back into his weapon, and drove off. This is justice in Canada.

Why is there no enforcement of speed laws? Why aren’t we reading of these multi-ton weapons being impounded for gross speed violations? Why am I literally taking my life in my hands because I drive to work?

Why is there no legitimate testing of these drivers? Why should you and I risk being airlifted by Stars because the inept are licensed and speed laws unenforced? I believe I just heard a child of two predict “Betcha there’ll be another Humboldt.”

Drive that highway. But do it after May 20. Our bloodstained, lifeless, skid mark covered highway becomes ours again.

Gas prices in Canada Dear Editor, 1962 Gas prices in Canada averaged 37 cents per gallon.

Minimum wage in Canada averaged 85 cents per hour.

Therefore, it took about 25 minutes to earn the money to buy one gallon of gasoline.

In 1962, the average car available to a person on minimum wage would have been a second hand Chevrolet or Ford.

One of these cars would have gotten about 20 miles per gallon on a good day.

So it would have taken about 25 minutes of work, at minimum wage, to buy a gallon of gas to drive about twenty miles.

2022 Today, gas prices in Canada average $9.00 per gallon. (Calculated at $2.00 per liter, times 4.5 liters per gallon.)

Minimum wage in British Columbia now is $15.20 per hour.

Therefore, it takes about 36 minutes to earn the money to buy the equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. Now, in 2022, the average car available to a person on minimum wage could be a second hand Hyundai, Honda or such. One of these cars is expected to get about 35 miles per gallon equivalent on most days. CRFS is made possible by the generous support of funders. However, this support covers only a minor portion of trip costs. It is asked that a participant’s family pay a course fee of a suggested contribution ranging from $800 to $1,000. Financial aid is possible in select cases.

The Columbia River Field School makes these topics come alive in the landscape of the basin and in the lives of participants in a way that no other program does.”

Of course, if you drive a luxury car or SUV that burns premium fuel, or a huge pickup truck that guzzles more gas, then you will be paying more.

But then I also hope that you are not working in a minimum wage job.

I think there may be some reaction to this letter. Like about the cost to transport goods by truck across this country.

Maybe someone should look into that too. I know that in 1962, trucks were much smaller than today and so carried less per mile travelled, and they got poorer gas mileage than the big trucks of today.

Some have gone on to further explore the watershed, get great careers, and become local leaders in their own communities. “Many alumni are now pursuing education and careers in related fields. In addition to these longer-term accomplishments, it’s also important that the field school is just plain fun,” says Rowlands. “We cultivate a challenging but supportive group environment where young people can enjoy themselves on a grand adventure while growing as individuals and connecting with their peers.”

The deadline has been extended until May 29 and spots are limited, so interested youth should apply today.

Applicants can expect to hear back within 1 week of submission. Successful applicants and their parents/ guardians will be provided with an extensive pre-trip information package.

Youth environmental groups press Invermere council about renewable energy

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Local residents continue to press the District of Invermere on environmental matters, with the latest concerns centering around the use of renewable energy.

During the district’s council meeting last week, on Tuesday, May 10, council received two letters on the topic, both asking the district to transition to using 100 per cent renewable energy in homes, buildings, transportation and other infrastructure.

The first one was a joint letter from Columbi-YEA (the Columbia Youth Environmental Action Group) and the David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) Climate Change Club, and the second was from East Kootenay environmental group Wildsight.

RDEK Area F Director Susan Clovechok pointed out that much consultation was already conducted, back in 2018, and said “I’m concerned about doing yet another study without first implementing any of the ideas that came out of the 2018 consultation...I’m not sure we’re going to hear anything different from the public than: ‘we want weekends, evening service, and more services on the northern route’, which we already know.”

Sparks replied that B.C. Transit is thinking of much more targeted engagement, on a smaller scale, dealing specifically with shifting the existing schedule (to allow for later rides, in the evening). “We are pretty clear. We know that if you’re in the northern part of the valley, you can’t get to work (in Invermere) on time using public transit. We know your kids can’t stay

Both letters pointed out that plenty of other municipal governments in the Kootenay region (a total of at least 10), including nearby Golden, have already made such commitments.

Columbi-YEA and the DTSS Climate Change club noted that there will be challenges in the transition, but that the technology enabling it already exists, that the provincial government has allocated $76 million for local government climate change projects, and that other Kootenay communities now have “roadmaps” on how best to achieve the transition.

“This goal is feasible. Our actions, combined with those of other Kootenay governments, would make an impact. The collective transition would significantly lower emissions, and our region would also serve as an inspiration for other rural areas across the country,” read the Columbi-YEA-DTSS Climate Change Club letter, adding that “it’s the just thing to do.”

Clovechok asked about the possibility of allowing the local governments of the Columbia Valley to create their own public transit system, using the funding that would have been allocated to B.C. Transit for the Columbia Valley service.

Wright replied that would likely require changing provincial legislation. “I recognize the frustration you are speaking to...we sometimes haven’t done the best job supporting small (public transit) systems,” conceded Wright, adding the original expansion proposal “might have been a little too much growth all at once. It may be better to take an incremental approach. That may be more palatable.”

On May 9th our businesses tee’d off for our annual golf tournament at Fairmont Hot Springs Mountainside Course. This year, players stepped up to Beat the Pro to win Flats Fest Tickets and Golf Passes, get the Longest Drive for a 2-night stay with Inn hotels in Canmore or Jasper, and Beat The Executive Director, Pete for a chance to win Spike Ball and drink tumblers from Woody’s Plumbing and FEHR Seasons. Golfers were also challenged at our first ever 19th hole chipping contest, where you had to chip and hit a keg to win the keg. We had three targets, kindly donated by Radium Brewing, Arrowhead Brewing and a Pickled Vodka Caesar Kit from Taynton Bay Spirits. Needless to say, some lucky golfers got to keep the buzz of the day running with locally produced craft drinks.

We want to thank everyone who contributed to this event. So many businesses showed support and involvement, by either playing golf,

Thank you to Fundables, for working behind the scenes by getting our auction up and running. The donated items this year included local adventures, local merch, arts and crafts, vacations, shopping sprees and dinners out. “There is, for instance, a number of tennis players who feel that the tennis courts by Pynelogs are somehow threatened, which is certainly not the case,” said Taft. “I personally don’t understand why we need to delay this another two weeks and makes things more complicated.”

“To me, the least complicated option is that we keep the status quo — we all share the sandbox,” replied Councillor Kayja Becker, referencing the longstanding unofficial policy that have seen the MNAP courts operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, with users asked to limit their time on the courts to no more than one hour.”

“But why not at least try one night a week, for pickleball?” queried Taft.

“Because in the last number of days, a huge number of emails have come in,” replied Councillor Greg Anderson. “We’ve heard from a lot of user groups. We have a responsibility to all user groups, not just the pickleball club.”

“We need to change the way we are looking at this.

The debate so far has been ‘don’t take away my space’ not ‘let’s make more space’,” responded Taft.

The district received a letter jointly sent by local men’s basketball coordinator Justin Woodman, David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) Athletic Director Christina Paolini, and Steve Nash Youth Basketball Coordinator Nadine Hale outlining that local youth do use the MNAP courts for basketball, but indicating a desire to be flexible and share the courts as much as possible.

“Something to consider is that even though the basketball courts may not be in use at a given time, that it is still very important that it be available for use so the opportunity exists for the youth to go there. As a parent of two teenagers I can speak — and I know I am speaking on behalf of other parents — to how thankful I am — we are — that these courts exist for the youth,” wrote Hale in the letter. “This is one of a few ways they can occupy their time with their friends in constructive ways, staying fit, healthy, busy, outdoors and out of trouble.”

“We will get through this, and we will be better for it. It’s just a bit of a process,” Anderson told pickleball players in the meeting gallery.

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Passion for pickleball — and for other forms of recreation — remains high, and the potential use of Mount Nelson Athletic Park (MNAP) courts by the Invermere Pickleball Club was again discussed during the most recent Invermere council meeting.

The topic first leapt to public attention at the Tuesday, Apr. 26 council meeting, when a crowd of 40+ Invermere Pickleball Club members filled the meeting gallery and pressed Invermere council about letting the club use the MNAP courts in the morning and on some evenings, letting the club use the MNAP concession building for storage, and developing a long term solution to the lack of dedicated pickleball courts in the valley. Pickleball was on the agenda again at the very next council meeting, held last week on Tuesday, May 10, and again pickleball players turned up, although not in the same large numbers on Apr. 26 At the May 10 meeting, council agreed to let the club use the MNAP concession building for storage, and asked the club to submit a cost estimate for building new pickleball courts (which the club did, even before the meeting began), but declined to commit any specific times at the MNAP courts for the club just yet.

Invermere Chief Administrative Officer Andrew Young explained that, since Apr. 26, more information on other MNAP court users had come to light, noting that “there has been, since the publication of the issue, a very large amount of correspondence that has come in.”

Young said much of that correspondence had come in the few days just before the meeting and that council may need time “to consider the volume of material, received late...and consider the full ramifications (of that material).”

Several councillors quickly agreed to this idea, but Gerry Taft was opposed to waiting any longer.

“How this has played out has not been ideal,” said Taft, saying he felt the tone of the discussion had become adversarial.

More hands are needed for the paws on deck; The Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN), who gratefully depend on a long-standing volunteer network, is sending out a call for volunteers. Currently, they have 59 active volunteers: 22 active supporters and 20 active fosters (with two additional fosters for unusual animals like reptiles, and other small rodents).

“We need reliable volunteers skilled in the areas of animal health and welfare, and those who can foster,” says ICAN President Darla Spiry. “People who could vaccinate and/or assess the health of animals who come into our care and custody.” Volunteers are crucial for ICAN, says Spiry, adding that, “Our current fundraising plans are for sustainable self-sufficiency, as we are a non-profit organization relying on donation dollars.”

If you cannot volunteer directly with the furry friends, there are other ways to lend a helping paw. You can simply drop off recyclable bottles and cans in the designated area just outside the office. “Our local bottle depot is under new ownership and management and has recently reopened,” says Spiry. Prior to this transition, ICAN Volunteers were driving to Golden and Cranbrook bottle depots to cash in donations. The contributions are crucial as Spiry says that, “Around $500 per month or $6000 per year is generated in these returnable efforts. The money is used for utility costs including the internet to view the feline shenanigans in the off hours. The bottle money is also placed into general funds which goes toward supplies and medical care when needed.”

“We must be resourceful and support one another; Little Mittens Rescue in Golden B.C. does not have a veterinary clinic or animal hospital. They rely on Invermere veterinarians to assist and book appointments. If we could coordinate and arrange to assist this agency in getting their felines, canines, and other companion animals to surgery in Invermere, this would be a great support,” says Spiry. “ICAN can also always benefit from new board members who show a keen interest in animal welfare and getting involved on committees to write policy and contingency planning.”

The non-profit is also always looking for assistance with their Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) program to

return feral animals back to their natural habitat. “We are always in need of skilled people from Brisco to Skookumchuk and all communities in between,” says Spiry.

“Assisting in our local shelter is always necessary and appreciated in all areas of volunteering particularly daily a.m. cleaning and feeding is a necessity.” With Invermere being the hub, a lot of the surrounding areas must take their furry companions to the Invermere Veterinary Hospital, so lending time to transport in certain cases is always appreciated.

In 2021, ICAN partnered with Akisqnuk (Ktunaxa) First Nation and applied for a funding grant through BCSPCA Cats on First Nation homelands, which run adjacent to the Columbia River. ICAN inquired about other grants with shelters and First Nation Communities and was provided information and additional donations from an organization on the coast of B.C. These donations continue to be available to the Akisqnuk community, in their efforts to manage the feline population problem.

ICAN has also recently reached out to the Shuswap Band council to inquire if they could use assistance or support with their companion animals in any way. Last month alone, 14 cats were picked up by ICAN Office Manager Kari Woods. “They all came from the same owner who surrendered them,” says Woods. “There was one mother cat with seven new kittens only four days old, and six two-year-old cats from the mother’s first litter.”

ICAN also provides a huge service to this community in managing and controlling the pet overpopulation problem. They provide resource support to farms and ranches in need of food for their outdoor felines, along with supporting families wishing to spaying or neutering.

“Animals in our shelter receive additional love and attention of daily grooming, petting, and socializing, while our animals in foster care receive individual attention, medical care, and devotion to prepare them both for their fur-ever homes,” says Spiry. “Baby kittens are placed with mother cats within skilled foster homes to meet the needs of the entire animal families. Presently, ICAN is partnering with other companion fosters who take on a variety of animals to suit their specialized needs and tendencies.”

Mountain Heart Hub thrives in Columbia Valley Submitted by Mountain Heart Hub Columbia Valley Inclusion Mountain Heart Hub Columbia Valley Inclusion is a new and growing organization in Invermere that welcomes and supports adults with diverse abilities throughout the valley!

We are relatively new in town, having just opened last May (2021). We are administered by Interior HomeCare Solutions and funded by Community Living B.C. (CLBC) through a client referral system.

CLBC is an organization and crown corporation which has been operating for many years.

They support families and individuals through service providers, community, and government partners.

At a number of our community partners’ establishments, we provide community connection and inclusion through some activities and opportunities such as: volunteering, involvement in projects and events, and life-skills building activities.

We would like to thank our

partners for the opportunities and experience that they provide to our clients. Thanks also for their continued support in providing individuals with acceptance and participation in learning and working opportunities.

If there are agencies or organizations who would be interested in having our friends participate in events or for work support, we are always open to connection and collaboration.

Our center is located at 1106, 7th Avenue, Invermere, where we gather and participate in our day program, which often includes cooking, games, movies, arts and crafts, etc. Transportation to the space and other locations may be available.

Quilting exhibit huge success

By Haley Grinder haley@columbiavalleypioneer.com The latest art exhibition, Creative Threads: Quilts by the Valley Piecemakers, concluded last week after a beautiful three-week-long display. The exhibit, which ran from Apr. 23 to May 14, showcased skillful stitchwork from members of the Columbia Valley’s local quilting guild: The Valley Piecemakers.

The showcase, held at Pynelogs Cultural Centre in Invermere, was also the scene of Columbia Valley Art’s first soirée in two years, due to restrictions caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Featuring a beautiful

moment as attendees and guild members rejoiced once again at in-person events, the kickoff seemed to mirror the artwork itself – the town coming back together much like each individual piece of fabric, creating an artistic masterpiece in more ways than one.

The last time the guild portrayed their art work in an exhibition style was back in 2014, so their partnership with Pynelogs and the Columbia Valley Arts Council was much-appreciated by both guild members and attendees, especially after the isolation caused by the ongoing pandemic.

Upcoming exhibition at The Artym Gallery

May long weekend, as the season opener to holidays and travel, will be marked here at The Artym Gallery by an exhibition showcasing the fine art wearables of master jeweller Bayot Heer and the gleeful paintings of Angela Morgan.

Bayot describes his new work as “casual and fresh, yet still maintaining the clean architectural lines. My main focus for this year has been challenging the conventional ring ideas by introducing new shapes that are both unusual in design and comfortable to wear.” The theme of “Form” is carried throughout his unique collection. His earrings range from the simple stud design to more elaborate yet classic earrings. Rounding off his new work are forged bracelets in Sterling silver, 18 karat gold and featuring coloured stones with accent diamonds.

RDEK seasonal sale of fireworks prohibition now in effect Submitted by the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) The sale of fireworks is currently prohibited in the rural parts of the RDEK. “Our seasonal prohibition on the sale of Fireworks runs between May and October each year, and we want to remind both business owners and the general public that the sale of fireworks in the rural parts of the RDEK is now prohibited,” says RDEK Development Services Manager Andrew McLeod.

As a regional district, the RDEK is not able to regulate the use of fireworks as a municipality might.

The use of fireworks in rural areas is governed by Provincial restrictions, which prohibit the use of fireworks anytime there is a Category 2 Open Burning Ban in place. “It is important for the public to understand the different categories of burning restrictions in BC, as many people do not realize that the use of fireworks are prohibited whenever a Category 2 Open Burning Ban is in effect,” adds McLeod.

The RDEK’s bylaw prohibits the sale and disposition of fireworks between May 1 and October 1 and applies to any person or business within rural Electoral Areas A, B, C, E, F and G.

The guild hopes to put on another exhibition in the future. However, due to the time-consuming nature of stitchwork, likely will not come to fruition for a couple years.

The most significant piece on display is arguably the infamous David Thompson Quilt, which was finishedin 2007 as a celebration of the 200th anniversary of North American explorer David Thompson arriving in the Columbia Valley.

“We just wanted to be able to share the results of all of our hard work, and also to highlight the David Thompson quilt, which is really the an incredibly significant piece of work,” says Pam Meunier, member of the Valley Piecemakers since the guild originated back in 2014.

The piece was a culmination of

65 volunteers’ hard work, travelling all over Canada -- as far east as New Brunswick -- before it was completed a mere three years after it was started. People came from all over the region to get a closer look said Meunier, adding that, “all of them were stunned by its beauty, because of the craftsmanship in it.”

The panels on the David Thompson quilt were definitely a team effort, she says. “the other panel was very significant because it was also a partnership with each other to the Akisqnuk First Nation and the Shuswap.”

The guild is comprised of approximately 30 people, both local to the Columbia Valley and part-time visitors. Members all have varied levels of experience from 40-years to absolute beginner.

Meunier hopes to gain a proper display home for the David Thompson quilt in the future so its beauty can be preserved, available for the whole community to enjoy.

In Loving Memory of MCDIARMID, Lorne Henry May 5, 1949 - May 8, 2022 It is with a saddened heart that we say goodbye to a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Lorne passed away peacefully at the Invermere hospital with family by his side.

Lorne was born in Princeton, BC and raised in Vancouver. He married the love of his life, Catherine in 1969 and they moved to the Okanagan Valley soon after. Their sons Jamieson and Colin were born in Kelowna.

Lorne’s first profession was a barber and he had businesses in Kelowna and later in Princeton.

In 1981 he went back to school and became a registered nurse and worked in Kelowna and Princeton hospitals. In 1996 the family moved to Fairmont Hot Springs. Lorne started a wood flooring business that is still run by his son Colin. Lorne loved music and played guitar, bass, banjo and mandolin. He sang with the Valley Voices choir for many years. He also enjoyed woodworking and spent many happy hours in his shop. He was involved with “Art in the Park” along with his wife Cat. He was very proud of his grandchildren and doing things with them was his special joy.

Lorne and Cat enjoyed camping and spent their retirement winters on the coast of Oregon and California. Lorne loved his life in Fairmont and continued to live life to the fullest even with his cancer diagnosis two years ago.

He leaves behind his loving wife Cat, sons Jamieson (Shannon), Colin (Joanne);

grandchildren Jessika, Ashley, Tyler and Ethan; brother Richard (Dianne); nephews Jason and Kyle, niece Shawna; sister-in-law Myrnalyn.

Predeceased by his parents Richard & Jean McDiarmid and brother-in-law Doug Murray.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Hrdlicka, Nellie

April 21, 1924 – May 9, 2022 Nellie, who celebrated her 98th birthday on April 21, 2022, peacefully passed away in Invermere, BC on May 9th, 2022.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jim, in 1999. Nellie is survived by her three children, Jim Hrdlicka (Rhonda), Valorie MacLeod (John) and Arlene Bignell (Gord). She was so proud of her 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Nellie made a positive difference in this world. Besides being an active and fun-loving woman, she took action to make this world a better place. Nellie was instrumental in initiating the first Canadian Junior Girls Curling Championship in 1971. She was part of the organizing committee for the first Alberta Senior Games. When Jim and Nellie retired to Fairmont in 1983, she helped get the first BC Senior Games organized and then participated in these games for many years. She also volunteered in many other capacities over her lifetime.

The family would like to give our sincere thanks for the compassion and care shown by Dr. Bruce Johnson and the many health care workers who helped Nellie.

There will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Angel Flight East Kootenay.

Springer, Klaus It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Klaus Springer.

He is survived by his wife Carla, his children Arno (Cindy Breitkreutz), Heide McClintock (Carl), and Dawn Ervin (Kent), 4 grandchildren (Angela, Heather Tegart (Justin), Emily, and Justin Woodman (Chloe), his sisters (Angelica Burgel and Gabrielle Putzi (Robert), and 6 great grandchildren (Nathaniel and Everett Tegart).

Klaus was born in Berlin, Germany and studied carpentry before joining the army in 1944. Captured by the Russians, he spent 4 hard years in prison camp before his release in 1948. He immigrated to Canada in 1952, settling in Calgary, where he was soon joined by his parents and sisters, and where he met his wife Carla.

A true entrepreneur, his vision led to the creation of Springer Construction Ltd. It became one of the largest construction companies in western Canada, renowned for its quality product.

He was a founding partner of Carma Developers and was instrumental in the creation of the Alberta New Home Warranty Program. He was President of the Calgary, Alberta, and Canadian Home Builders Associations, and was the National President of HUDAC. His love of the Invermere valley began with his honeymoon at Lake Lillian. The Invermere cabin is another of his true legacies. Sixty eight years of family time and memories. His love of the valley has seen several of his family members make it their home.

He strongly believed in community and worked actively at supporting new endeavours like the Calgary Winter Club, the JA Laird climbing wall and Silver Strings ukulele group, the champion Springer Kickers soccer team, and was a board member of the Calgary Philharmonic.

A truly exceptional gentleman.

Years ago we did a Bible Study, “How to find, Follow, and fulfill God’s will.” As the years go by, and as I get closer to the end of the race, it gets to be very important for me, for us to learn how to finish the race properly, to finish the race in tune with what God wants.

Hebrews 12:1,2 tells us “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” We have to run with patience the race that is set before us. How do we do that, what would be a key on how to run this race with endurance and patience?

There is a wise man I know. In fact, he just celebrated his 90th birthday, he grew up on a farm, he told me that the trick to plowing a field, and keeping it straight was to pick an object in front of you, and stay focused.

How do you get the first furrow straight, doesn’t mater if you are plowing or cutting grass. Pick an object in front of you, and stay focused.

It is the same thing in running a race, if you are looking back all the time, to see where everybody else is, there is a good chance, after a while you won’t have to look back, because they will all be in front of you.

If we are going to run the race set out by the author, and if we are going to finish the race in tune with the finisher, it stands to reason, that the object, or in this case the person we should stay focused on is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

During the invasive species sampling, no invasive species (plants, mussel larvae, or mussels) were found.

Overall, there is a healthy abundance of vegetation throughout the lake; however, a couple of sites of concern saw less healthy vegetation. Invasive mussels were not detected in Lake Windermere, but there was an anecdotally observed decline in the native freshwater mussel species. A fascinating finding from the aquatic plant surveys which deserves more attention was green freshwater sponges, an animal species most likely known as Spongilla lacustris. The Columbia Valley is home to an exciting and diverse group of waterbirds. The newly developed waterbird survey protocol and the investigative report found 889 individual birds from 18 species observed, several of them being rare sightings. Of these sightings, the Surf Scoter, Red-necked Grebe, Horned Grebe, Eared Grebe, Western Grebe, and California Gulls are the designated species at risk. Out of all the observed species, 6 per cent are species at risk, making our lake a valuable hot spot for such bird sightings.

We have to learn to look to Jesus, no matter what, we have to get to the point where God’s Word has more impact in our lives than any situation, or any person, no matter what they say or do. If we are going to plow a straight furrow then, it might be a good time to dig out the Bible, spend some time in it as it says in Joshua 1:8: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then…”

Then what?

If you have observed the Word of God, you have kept it before your eyes, you have meditated in it day and night.

Then what? ...Then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

And verse 9: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

If we are going to plow a straight furrow, we have to keep ourselves encouraged, you know why?

Ain’t nobody else going to do it for you.

And we will never finish the race, fulfilling God’s will for us with a defeated attitude. We have to resist discouragement, it will come, and when it does, we have to resist it. We have to learn to overcome every obstacle that comes along. It takes effort on our part, to plow a straight furrow.

2 Tim. 2:3 “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

If we are going to finish the race, if we are going to endure, take note, it may be over the long haul, but if we are going to endure, we are going to have to toughen up.

I am learning that I can’t go by feelings, I have to go by God’s Word, and if you take this to heart, or should I say if you get it in your mind, and live by it, you will become the overcomer God has called you to be.

“God said it, I believe it, and that settles it” some interesting questions and highlights the continued importance of monitoring efforts in a changing climate. Each year this region grows in popularity, experiencing increased development within the watershed, risks of adverse environmental impacts to water quality and quantity, and disturbance to aquatic populations.

Case studies demonstrate lakes and rivers which undergo significant changes to pollution events, algal blooms, or invasion by non-native species suffer possibly irreversible environmental damages. Last year’s heatwave reminded us that climate change influences hydrologic regimes in the Columbia Valley, causing hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters. The cascading effects of these climatic changes, in combination with compounding human influences on our aquatic ecosystems, can cause significant impacts on the health of our lake. How will these factors impact Lake Windermere in the long term? Though no one can tell for sure, it is essential to continue building our baseline data and learning more about this amazing watershed we are lucky to call home.
