Welcome to the Village of Radium Hot Springs. As the gateway to the Columbia Valley, Radium is an authentic mountain resort community steeped in history and small-town charm. Our natural beauty is unsurpassed, as Radium is nestled between Kootenay National Park, the Purcell and Rocky Mountains, and the largest continuous wetland in North America. Our small size is designed for walking over driving and people over cars. We encourage our visitors to put on their walking shoes and experience the outdoors and the wildlife that wanders our streets and parks. Radium is busy with activities, events and attractions year-round. Whether it is our championship golf courses, whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, trail riding, shopping or just relaxing in one of our many restaurants, you will find all you need to enjoy a fabulous holiday. After a long day outdoors you can relax in the worldfamous Radium Hot Springs mineral pools, minutes from Radium. These odourless pools, surrounded by the natural rock walls of the Sinclair Canyon, are guaranteed to soothe away any stresses of daily life. Close to 1,000 people call Radium their home, with many more part-time residents. The sign entering Radium from the east says it all, “The Mountains Shall Bring Peace to the People.” This typifies the reason we love living here and the reason we wish to share this experience with you.

While in Radium, I encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful activities, services and events that we have available. Radium is a friendly, walkable community, with plenty of comfortable accommodations, convenient services and an impressive selection of places to eat, from a quick bite at a casual café to fine dining at a luxurious resort or restaurant. The friendly staff at the Radium Visitor Centre are happy to offer many suggestions to help you make the most of the full array of activities on offer here. From the breathtaking mountain peaks and plentiful wildlife to the rejuvenating hot springs pools and challenging rounds of golf, there is plenty to see and do. For those seeking peace among the mountains, you will find a network of trails and hikes starting right here in the village to allow you to explore the area by foot. Water-lovers will enjoy all the opportunities to roam the backcountry rivers and lakes and the spectacular Columbia River Wetlands which wind their way past. Getting here Radium Hot Springs is located at the junction of Highway 93 and Highway 95, encircled by the Rocky and Purcell Mountain Ranges, with spectacular Kootenay National Park at the village's eastern border and Columbia River flowing by to the west. It takes approximately three-anda-half hours to drive to Radium from Calgary, the closest international airport. The highlight of the trip is travelling through the beautiful countryside of Banff and Kootenay National Parks.

Gratuities & Tipping

Radium Hot Springs is in the Mountain Time Zone, one hour ahead of Pacific Time. Daylight Saving Time is in effect from 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November.

A tip or gratuity for service is standard in British Columbia. Unless stated, a tip is not added to your bill, so it is suggested you add approximately 15% to the amount before taxes for services such as dining and spa treatments. Tip amount should be dependent on the quality of services received.

Climate Radium enjoys a moderate climate year-round. Summers are warm, with an average high temperature of 24°C (75°F) from June to September and an average low of 10°C (50°F). Winters are generally mild, with moderate snowfall from December to March and an average high temperature of -2°C (28°F) and average low of -9°C (16°F).

Taxes The following tax rates are in place in British Columbia: • 12% Harmonized Sales Tax on most products and services including food, liquor, retail goods and accommodation. • 2% tax on hotels, motels, inns, resorts and other accommodations is levied in Radium Hot Springs.

Liquor The legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19. Anyone under 19 is considered a minor and is not permitted to enter drinking establishments.

Currency The Canadian Dollar (CAN) is the currency in British Columbia and across Canada. Currency exchange is oﬀered at the major banks and credit unions. U.S. currency is generally accepted, but not necessarily at the daily exchange rate. Most major credit cards are accepted across the valley including VISA and MasterCard. American Express is only accepted at select commercial establishments.

Driving in B.C. • Visitors may drive in British Columbia for up to six months with a valid driver's licence from their home province, state or country. • Seatbelts and child restraints are mandatory and must be worn at all times a vehicle is in use. Bicycle and motorcycle helmets are also required by law. • It is illegal to use handheld cell phones, portable electronic devices or to text message while driving. • Driving under the inﬂuence of alcohol is against the law. • Winter tires are mandatory on some mountain passes and highways in B.C. from October 1st to April 30th and are recommended for the Columbia Valley during winter.

ATV and Quad Biking There are endless kilometres of forest service roads and old logging roads winding through the valley just begging to be explored. The trails meander by old mine sites, through beautiful Crown lands and up to the top of towering peaks. Try Toby Creek Adventures (www.tobycreekadventures. com) near Panorama for guided tours and rentals.

Beaches and Parks Enjoy a picnic at the beautiful public beaches of the Columbia Valley. Our lakes are crystal clear and provide the perfect spot for swimming, boating or relaxation. In Invermere try Kinsmen Beach or James Chabot Provincial Park. Windermere Beach and the beach at Tilley Memorial Park in Canal Flats are also popular and spectacular spots.

Bighorn Sheep Monument Rick Taylor’s Heading for Radium monument is a life-sized statue of Radium’s most endearing residents: the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. While in Radium, you’ll enjoy watching these graceful creatures stroll through the village. Ask about the Head Banger Tours, held every fall.

Bird Watching The valley is a bird watcher’s paradise. Over 265 species of birds have been recorded in a 150-kilometre stretch of the Columbia River Wetlands — an area which supports abundant wildlife and provides spectacular vistas for bird watching. Don’t miss the annual Wings Over the Rockies (www.wingsovertherockies.org), a week-long festival celebrating birds and their habitat, held in May.

Camping Being among the towering mountain peaks is what makes outdoor camping so exciting. With a choice of campgrounds close to resorts, golf courses, rivers and creeks, adventure parks and restaurants — the valley has a campsite for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and the scenery is magnificent. For a list of campgrounds see page 19.

Canoeing and Kayaking For the best way to explore the spectacular Columbia River Wetlands, try your paddling skills in a kayak or canoe. Available from Columbia River Kayak and Canoe (www. columbiariverkayakcanoe.com) are rentals or guided tours. From a couple of hours to a full day, you can enjoy a gentle, scenic float through the beautiful local waterways.

Classic Car Show A classic car lover’s paradise: the Columbia Valley Classics Car Club's Show 'n' Shine is held every September in Radium. It attracts people from all over western Canada, and is one of the valley’s signature events. Around 800 classic vehicles participate — almost every make and model of car and truck.

Fishing The valley’s lakes, streams and rivers make for incredible fishing. Whitefish, Bass, Kokanee, Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout all thrive here. Ice fishing is great fun, especially if you’ve never tried it. Don't forget to purchase a fishing licence before heading out. Golfing The valley is a mecca for golfers, with 16 courses situated within minutes of each other. From mini-golf to a challenging 18-hole game, we’ve got it all. See pages 11-12 for more information.

Hang Gliding and Paragliding

Mountain Biking

The valley has some of the world’s best sites for hang gliding and paragliding. Check out Mount Seven in Golden, a site best suited to advanced gliders, Mount Swansea in Invermere or the Panorama Flying Site, which is located at the ski resort just 30 minutes west of Invermere. All offer stunning scenery and spectacular thrills.

The valley has some of the greatest mountain biking trails in Canada. From the low-lying valley floor to the steep summits, there is something for bikers at all levels of fitness and experience. For extensive biking trail networks try Nipika Mountain Resort (www.nipika.com).

Heli-skiing

Rock climbers and mountaineers can choose anything from small crags to world-class alpine climbs in a region known for its range of choices. Golden is a mecca for climbers from around the world. There are also terrific climbs throughout the Rockies and Purcells, including the historic Conrad Kain route up the Bugaboo Spire.

For the ultimate powder experience, explore the local peaks with a guided heli-ski trip. Kicking up fluffy clouds of snow as you enjoy the pristine wilderness is a second-to-none way to explore the beautiful backcountry. Heli-skiing and heli-boarding are offered by RK Heli Ski (www.rkheliski. com) based at Panorama Mountain Village.

Hiking Some of the best mountain hiking trails in the world wind through the Canadian Rockies and the Purcells. Kootenay National Park has a great trail network with varying difficulty levels. The complete list is available from the Radium Hot Springs Visitor Centre. Anyone wanting to hike within the park requires a park pass, available at the gates (see page 9 for more information). Guided hikes are available from Rocky Mountain Safaris (www.rockymtnsafaris.com). To learn more about the range of hiking available in the valley, see page 8.

Horseback Riding There are numerous spots, from the northern tip of the valley to Cranbrook and Kimberley in the south where you can find well-trained mules and horses along with friendly, experienced guides. Rides range from scenic one-hour trips to multi-day camping treks for serious riders. Try Diamond B Outfitting (250-342-5128) in Invermere, or Luxor Corrals (www.luxortrailhorse.com) in Spur Valley, 15 minutes north of Radium Hot Springs.

Mountain Climbing

Mini-golf With mini-golf courses available in Windermere, Radium, Fairmont Hot Springs, Golden, Cranbrook and Kimberley, you don’t have to be an experienced golfer to pick up the putter during your stay. Funtasia Fun Park (www. fairmontfuntasia.com) in Fairmont features an 18-hole course winding through a natural forest setting, plus petting zoo, spin n’ bump cars and lush, green gardens.

Outdoor Fitness Equipment Radium and Invermere both offer a fantastic array of outdoor fitness equipment, from elliptical trainers to shoulder or leg presses. If you hate to miss a gym session while enjoying your stay, pop down to Radium’s Legend’s Park or Mount Nelson Athletic Park in Invermere.

Rafting and Floating

Hot Springs

A wet and wild whitewater rafting trip is sure to get the adrenaline flowing. If you’re looking for something a little calmer, a float trip is the way to go. Rafting companies include Kootenay River Runners (www.raftingtherockies. com) in Radium, Glacier Raft Company (www.glacierraft. com) and Wakpa Wilderness Adventures (www.wakpa.com).

With natural, mineral hot pools available in Radium (www.hotsprings.ca) and Fairmont Hot Springs (www. fairmonthotsprings.com), plus the wilderness pools at Lussier Hot Springs, approximately two hours south of Radium, there are plenty of choices for those seeking a little rest and relaxation during their trip to the Columbia Valley.

For a breathtaking way to explore the valley, check out scenic flying tours, available through Babin Air (www. babinair.com), based at the Invermere Airport. Alpine tours, valley tours or glacier tours are all offered.

Rafting on the Kootenay River is available from Glacier Raft Company, based in Golden and Fairmont, Kootenay River Runners, based in Radium.

Scenic Flights

Ski Touring The frosted peaks, powdery snow and peaceful solitude of the backcountry in this area are awe-inspiring. Near Golden, you’ll find more than 20 backcountry lodges. In the central Columbia Valley, lodges can be found to the east of Radium. To the south, there are cabins less than an hour west of Canal Flats and a single hut near Kimberley. For guided trips, try Rocky Mountain Safaris (www.rockymtnsafaris.com).

Water Sports With so many rivers and lakes in the valley, the potential for fun is endless. Swimming, boating, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, water-skiing, jet-skiing, wakeboarding and windsurfing are just a few possibilities. Boat charters and wakeboarding, water-ski and wakeskate lessons are available from Shadybrook Resort Marina (www.shadybrookresort.com) in Windermere, while boats, fishing gear and more can be found at Fairmont Outpost & Outdoors (www.fairmontoutdoors.com).

Snowmobiling Get ready for the ride of your life! Our majestic mountains, rugged backcountry and groomed trails are the best places to enjoy this fun winter sport. Some trails are more challenging than others, so be sure to ask about the level of experience required. Skiing: Cross-Country and Downhill There are well-groomed cross-country ski trails scattered through the valley. Beautiful Nipika Mountain Resort (www. nipika.com), east of Radium, has 50 kilometres of trails groomed for both classic and skate skiing, while an additional 50 kilometres of trails offer some of the most scenic single track anywhere. The Greywolf Nordic Centre at Panorama also has more than 20 kilometres of trails. For downhill, try Kicking Horse Resort, near Golden, the beginner-friendly ski area at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort (www.fairmonthotsprings. com) or Panorama Mountain Village.

Hiking

o matter where you go hiking in the valley, you'll enjoy a choice of maintained trails in an idyllic setting. From short hikes around Radium offering beautiful valley views to strenuous multi-day treks into the scenic backcountry, casual and serious hikers alike will find something here. The hiking season in the Columbia Valley usually begins mid-May for the lower elevations and late June/early July for higher elevations, and lasts until late autumn. Many hiking trails are only accessible via logging and mining roads, which can be rugged, and are used by fast-moving logging vehicles. Drive with caution in a vehicle with good ground clearance. To help preserve this pristine area, hikers are asked to stick to marked trails. Travel with a friend or a group and always inform someone where you are going and your planned return time. Do not rely on cell phones for help. Reception can be patchy locally, particularly in backcountry areas. Visitors are advised never to feed or approach wildlife. Carry bear spray and store food and other attractants securely when camping. Make plenty of noise (clapping, shouting, singing, talking) to alert wildlife of your presence when walking. Bug spray is essential throughout the summer. Regardless of the length of trip you are planning and the weather when you set out, be prepared for any conditions. Pack adequate food, water and clothing, and a first aid kit. Driving directions to all local hikes are available from the Radium Visitor Centre. Moderate Hikes Sinclair Creek Trail (Radium) A short, 3.5 km round trip with interpretive panels, starting from the north end of Radium. The trail meanders beneath a canopy of Poplar and Douglas Fir trees along the bank of Sinclair Creek.

Old Coach Trail (Radium to Dry Gulch) A 9 km (one way) trail with spectacular wetland views and moderate elevation gain, suitable for walking or biking. The historic route was travelled by Model T Ford cars in the 1920s.

Wildlife Refuge Wetlands Walk (Wilmer area) Stroll through the terraced bluffs above the wetlands near Wilmer looking out for flora and fauna (and many bird species) along the way. There is no marked trail; just stick to the area marked by blue signs.

Lake Enid (Wilmer area) An easy 3.5 km loop around a small, picturesque lake near Invermere and Wilmer. Perfect for those interested in birding, fishing or swimming. 8 â&#x20AC;˘ R a dium H o t S p r i n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 2 /2 0 1 3

Dutch Creek Hoodoos (Fairmont Hot Springs) A pleasant 3.5 km, 95 m elevation gain hike near Fairmont Hot Springs which offers great views of Columbia Lake and a chance to explore the stunning geographic features. Stay left where the trail forks to complete a loop of the hoodoos.

Bumpy Meadows & Pedley Pass (Windermere area) A great hike for the whole family. A short (3.8 km), clearly marked trail west of Windermere with moderate elevation gain will take you through the aptly named Bumpy Meadows and up to Pedley Pass for great views of the area.

Moderate Hikes Diana Lake (Edgewater/Brisco area) This fairly straightforward trail takes hikers 6.2 km up (600m elevation gain) to a tranquil and breathtakingly beautiful sub-alpine lake at the base of Mount Norman. Stunning views are guaranteed along the way.

Templeton Lake (Brisco area) A 6 km hike along an easy-to-follow trail with 280 m of elevation gain leads hikers to a picturesque lake backed by a cirque glacier and rocky scree slopes. Bug spray is highly recommended.

Welsh Lakes (Radium area) The hike up to this set of four beautiful, turquoise lakes is about 3.9 km (465 elevation gain). The trail offers everything one could want from a hike: varied terrain, snowy glaciated peaks and pretty alpine lakes.

McLean Lake (Brisco area) This moderate (5.2 km) but steep (575m elevation gain) trail leads hikers through beautiful alpine meadows to the shores of the scenic McLean Lake

Moderate Hikes Lake of the Hanging Glacier (Radium area) This well used trail will take your breath away as you scramble up to a beautiful alpine lake with a glacial backdrop. The 8 km and 730 meters of elevation gain (one way) is well worth the views of the lake and surrounding glaciated peaks.

Bugaboo Provincial Park (Brisco area) The hikes and climbs in the breathtakingly beautiful Bugaboo Provincial Park are best suited to fit, experienced hikers.

Kootenay National Park

nstant, easy access to the outdoor wonders of Kootenay National Park is one of the highlights of spending time in Radium. Established in 1920, this superb wilderness park is noted for its diversity of ecology, climate and landscapes, from glacier-clad peaks to semi-arid grasslands with cacti. The 94-kilometre Banff-Windermere Highway takes you through the park along the Vermilion and Kootenay rivers and through the narrow gorge of Sinclair Canyon into

Radium. Along the way there are three scenic viewpoints at Continental Divide, Kootenay Valley and Hector Gorge, and many stopping points to access the park's extensive hiking and biking trail network. With 11 picnic areas and four seasonal campgrounds, the park offers visitors a wide range of day-use and overnight choices. Climbing, horseback riding, fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, wildlife watching, canoeing and kayaking are just some of the activities available.

Day use pass

Park passes are required for anyone stopping within Kootenay National Park. Through traffic may travel through the area without a pass. A day pass allows for use of the viewpoints and trails, with all the money raised going towards park improvements, education and information services and trail maintenance. Camping, camping services (fires, dump station, etc.) and the grazing of horses require separate permits. A National Parks fishing licence is required for all anglers. Fishing in national parks is not covered by a provincial licence. Annual and day passes are available from the Parks Canada gate and the Radium Visitor Centre.

This beautiful, protected area is filled with wildlife. The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep stroll that through Radium in the spring, fall and winter are some of the park's best-loved residents. White-tailed deer, elk, mule deer, sheep, mountain goats and a huge selection of birds are commonly seen, especially during the spring and fall. Less frequently spotted are moose, black bears, coyotes, wolves and grizzly bears. Wildlife tend to feed and travel in valley bottoms during the winter, so you may be treated to a lucky sighting on your way through. Be alert for wildlife on the road, particularly at night. Pull well off the highway when stopping to view wildlife, and observe them from the safety of your vehicle. It is illegal to approach, feed or harass wildlife.

Biking Highway 93, which runs along the length of Kootenay National Park is part of the “Golden Triangle” — a cycling tour which passes through Banff, Golden and Radium Hot Springs. The 300-kilometre loop includes two beautiful mountain passes, a dramatic canyon and varied views. Experienced mountain bikers will appreciate the old fire roads that criss-cross the park, now serving as excellent biking trails. Many trails start near the Kootenay Crossing Warden Station. The West Kootenay trail is a smooth dirt track running through lush forests for almost 13 kilometres. Invigorating scenery will fuel you to cross the park boundary into the Beaverfoot Valley.

Hiking There are plenty of short hikes, day hikes and multi-day treks in Kootenay National Park for an eager explorer, with two wheelchair accessible trails also available. For more information on hikes within the park and directions to the trailheads, visit the Radium Visitor Centre or ask for a hiking guide at the park gates.

Hot Springs

he naturally heated mineral waters that are the namesake of Radium Hot Springs have been drawing visitors to this area for thousands of years. Long before the arrival of European settlers, the First Nations people told tales of the “smoking waters” which sprang from the rocks at the base of Redstreak Mountain in what is now Kootenay National Park. They found that these odourless, mineral-rich waters, warmed naturally by the Earth’s core, would sooth and heal their aches and pains. History shows that Sir George Thompson, governor of the Hudson Bay Company, was the first European visitor to the hot springs in 1841. His bathing experience differed greatly from today, using a bathtub-sized pool carved out of the gravel. The first legally registered hot springs owner, other than the Canadian government, was Roland Stuart, an Englishman who purchased them in 1890 for $160, and owned the springs until 1922. Construction of the first pool began in 1914, but was halted due to the First World War. This was also the year that the first analysis of the waters was undertaken by McGill University. They found harmless trace amounts of radon, a product of radium decomposition, and the following year the pools — originally called Sinclair Hot

Springs — were renamed Radium Hot Springs. In the years after the creation of Kootenay National Park in 1920, the Canadian Pacific Railway built the original Radium Hot Springs Lodge. Further hotels, cabins and tourist accommodations sprang up in the area following the opening of the Banff-Windermere Highway in 1923. Also during 1923, the first log bathhouse and hot pool were finally completed. The same year, a park gateway building was erected near to the pool, with the quotation, “The mountains shall bring peace to the people” on the arch above the gate. Tourism began to thrive. After a fire destroyed the old bathhouse in 1948, construction began on a new Radium Hot Springs building and the 25-metre cool pool, which were completed in 1951. During the following six decades, ongoing improvements and modernizations were made to the pools and infrastructure. Today, the Radium Hot Springs complex contains a hot soaking pool and a cool swimming pool. The water enters the hot pool at a comfortable 39 degrees Celsius (103°F).The pool complex can be reached along Highway 93, less than five minutes east of the village of Radium. A Parks Canada pass is not required. The pools are open year-round and admission costs $6.30 for adults and $5.40 for seniors and children.
