Radium Hot Springs
Welcome to Autumn in Radium Photo by Kris McCauley
On behalf of our business community, I would like to welcome you to our scenic mountain village located at the southern entrance to Canada’s national parks — your holiday home in the Columbia Valley. Radium Hot Springs is a resort community with a vibrant mix of yearround residents, seasonal homeowners, business owners and, of course, visitors from all parts of the world. While in Radium Hot Springs, we encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful activities, services and events that are available throughout the year. We have a friendly, walkable community that offers affordable accommodations and a full range of restaurants to meet all your dining needs. The knowledgeable staff at the Visitor Information Centre are happy to offer many suggestions that will allow you to experience how “The Mountains Shall Bring Peace to the People.” From the majestic mountain peaks and roaming wildlife in the village, to a rejuvenating soak in natural hot springs pools, to challenging yourself to a round of golf at one of our many local golf courses — there is plenty to see and do in Radium Hot Springs.
For those wanting to pursue mountain peace, you will find mountain trails and hikes starting right here in the village. The backcountry surrounding Radium Hot Springs offers activities for all four seasons. With downhill and cross-country skiing, breathtaking views of the spectacular Columbia River Wetlands; with camping in one of the three campgrounds located within the Village boundary, a variety of water sports on Lake Windermere, fishing at one of the many different backcountry lakes; to the many sanctioned mountain biking trails, the Pump and Jump Bike Track, and winter snowmobiling trails that take you to our magnificent glacier bowls. If you are scouting for business opportunities, look no further — Radium continues to grow. If you are looking for real estate, be sure to consult with an area realtor. Buyers will find a wide range of choices and a local expert will help you find the right property. While you spend your time in Radium, we want to help you “Find your peace.”
Douglas McIntosh President, Radium Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Tourism Radium Hot Springs Association
... from the Mayor Welcome to the Village of Radium Hot Springs. We are: Authentic. Connected. Self-sufficient. Beautiful. Compact. An environmental steward. Radium is a small, close-knit mountain village that is personable and personal. Radium feels like a best friend. Rejuvenation here is quieter, more intimate… a purposeful slow-down that inspires creativity and zest for life… similar to what you would experience in a spa, but this spa is much bigger — it’s Radium-size. We are not adorned with chain establishments and boilerplate service — we are the real deal! 4 • Rad ium H ot Spri n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 4 /2 0 1 5
Radium is reminiscent of a simpler time in history where social manners, social graces, and “do unto others” was a time-honoured tradition. In Radium, we honour and nurture the traditions while moving forward with our ambitious effort to build a humble, relaxed and sustainable mountain community, one “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” Take a look at our sheep — even the wildlife seem friendly! So welcome to Radium. We hope you enjoy your stay with us and that you “Find Your Peace” as we have all found ours!

About the village
The Village of Radium Hot Springs was incorporated as a municipality on December 10th, 1990. The village is located in the gorgeous Columbia Valley, nestled between the Purcell Mountains, the Canadian Rockies and the gateway to beautiful Kootenay National Park; and bordered by the Columbia River Wetlands, the largest continuous wetlands in North America.
World-famous wildlife
Radium Hot Springs is home to 1,000 year-round residents, and many more residents from out of town make this their second home as often as they can. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a lifestyle second to none. The village council’s commitment to making the town pedestrianfriendly means individuals can enjoy walking the many trails and paths located throughout Radium. With golfing, skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, birdwatching, fishing, snowmobiling and many other activities available nearby, it is easy to see why this four-season village is a favourite place to visit and to call home!
Adult rams grow to be about 100 centimetres (40 inches) tall and weigh between 90 and 135 kilograms (200 to 300 pounds). The horns from a male bighorn sheep can grow up to 127 centimetres long (50 inches). Ewes (female bighorn sheep) also grows horns, but theirs are much smaller than those of the rams.
ABOUT THE VILLAGE
Radium Hot Springs from Redstreak Campground Photo by Kris McCauley
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) are a famous attraction for Radium Hot Springs. During late October and early November, they can be seen in and around the village partaking in their famous head-banging ritual and rutting activities.
The sheep do migrate throughout the year. During the spring and summer, they move higher into the mountains to lamb. During the fall and winter, the sheep are seen around town and along Highway 93/95 towards Invermere.

VISITOR CENTRE
Radium Hot Springs Visitor Centre
Tourism Radium Hot Springs and the Radium Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce support the staffing and operation of the Radium Hot Springs Visitor Centre. The Radium Visitor Centre offers much more than just tourist information; it has a very positive impact on our local economy and tourism industry. It is also: A WELCOME CENTRE: The Visitor Centre employees are instrumental in directing visitors to local businesses and attractions and, in many cases, influencing their decisions on staying an extra day or two. They make an important first impression and are the welcoming ambassadors of our community. A MARKETING CENTRE: Visitor Centre employees field thousands of phone calls and emails requesting information on businesses, attractions and activities in the area. The Visitor Centre is our front line for direct contact marketing to the hundreds of thousands of visitors who pour through our community every year. This type of one-on-one marketing far outweighs the effectiveness of most other forms of advertising that we do. Our welcoming, engaging and friendly staff with their treasure trove of information go a long way to ensure our visitors have an enjoyable stay and come back again and again. And the Visitor Centre is extremely important in helping “complete the sale” as the toll-free number, website and email address of Chamber of Commerce are the call to action on all of Tourism Radium’s marketing material. A TECHNOLOGY CENTRE: The Community Access Computers in the Visitor Centre are a boon to tourists and locals requiring fast and easy access to Internet services. Visitors use the site for emailing loved ones, planning activities, booking accommodation and travel research. 8 • Rad ium H ot Spri n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 4 /2 0 1 5
Residents quite often access government programs and research. A KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION CENTRE: The Visitor Centre also gathers market intelligence for local business on the demographics and the community needs of visitors. It thus guides local business and government decisions on marketing direction and infrastructure planning. Visitor Centre employees are a wealth of knowledge for backcountry safety, avalanche danger, road and trail conditions, and wildlife interaction advice. AN INFORMATION CENTRE: The Visitor Centre is a central hub for information providing directions and advice on places to eat, to stay and to shop as well as activities and recreational opportunities. It performs an interpretive role for the natural, cultural and heritage history of the area. With the assistance of Parks Canada staff, the Visitor Centre provides a wealth of information and direction for the National Mountain Parks system. A CRISIS CENTRE: When emergencies or weather events cause turmoil, the Visitor Centre is the go-to place for valuable information for visitors and residents. Centre employees frequently are involved in conflict intervention and are mediators between visitors and businesses or sometimes just a “sounding board” and a sympathetic ear. A COMMUNITY CENTRE: The Visitor Centre is often the first point of contact in the community; not only for visitors, but also for those thinking about moving to the community. It is also a focal point for events and tours. A RETAIL CENTRE: The Visitor Centre is an attraction in its own right, with a wonderful local wildlife, geographical and native cultural interpretive centre. It is also a retail source for souvenirs and mementos of the community. The Visitor Centre is all of these and more — and is a very valuable asset to the community, the businesses, the local residents and, of course, our most valued visitors.
In North America, it takes 25 years before a car is considered an antique, or a “classic.” And with the Columbia Valley Classics Autumn Show & Shine celebrating its silver anniversary in 2014, Radium Hot Springs’s classic car show is now a classic car event in its own right. “It finishes up the Photos by Dan Walton summer and brings in a lot of people for that last busy summer weekend of the year,” said Columbia Valley Classics Car Club president Vicki Roberts. “It’s definitely put the mark on the map for Radium.” Back when the car show first started, it was 1990. Stan and Peggy Harrison were in the garage business in Radium, owning Classic Auto Repair Service and Fas Gas, which at the time were located in the Kootenay Block building that’s currently home to Meet on Higher Ground Café and the Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe. “We were Classic Auto Repair Services, which uniquely spells CARS,” said Peggy. “(Stan and I) were talking one day that we should start a car show, so we mentioned it to all our friends and they said, ‘yes let’s do it!’” The group of car enthusiasts formed the Columbia Valley Classics Car Club to put on the event and about 80 cars registered that first year. Registrations were done in the garage, Radium’s ball diamond was the site for the show, and the dance took place in a tent in the village. Following the inaugural Show and Shine, members of the car club put out a newsletter, inviting all the people who registered the first year to come back for the next one. “And club members told their friends and different family members with cars, and it just kept getting bigger and bigger,” said Peggy. After two years, registration moved to the ball park for

the third show, then to Radium Hall for the fourth where it’s been ever since. The dance was held in the tent in Radium village for the first two years before it, too, was moved to the hall for the next two years, after which time it relocated to the Invermere Curling Rink because of the huge crowd. It is still held there to this day. “It just seemed like every year we ended up with 100 cars more,” said Peggy. “It was so exciting to see all these cars cruising in for the weekend.” At about the 350-cars mark, the ball diamond was no longer big enough for the show, which is when The Springs offered the club its driving range. “We always had it the third weekend of September in all these years,” said Peggy. “I think there were only about four years that were kind of cool and a little bit rainy. One year we had a little bit of hail, but overall it was such a good date and we had beautiful warm sunny days so we just never changed it because we had such good luck with that date.” Peggy and Stan have been to all 24 car shows, and plan on celebrating the 25th. They’ve watched the growth of the event with amazement. “We didn’t expect, really, at that time, that it would get so big,” Peggy said. “We had a really good, strong club and it was just great participation from everybody. It’s such a huge task to put on a car show and all our club members pitched in and did everything they could to make it happen and make it successful, so everybody needs credit for that.” “Every year has been as exciting as the last year and, as the numbers increase, it’s just been absolutely incredible, just overwhelming for all of us,” she said. To learn more about this year’s 25th anniversary event, visit columbiavalleyclassics.com or call Tourism Radium at 250-347-9331. R adium Ho t Spr ings Visito r Guide 2 0 14/ 2015 • 9

New for 2014 Bighorn Meadows Resort is doing its part in the global movement against climate change. “We’re working hard to reduce our emissions through energy conservation and other measures,” says Michael Anderson, President of True Key Hotels & Resorts. “Our new environmental initiative program includes each guest contributing a $1 per night environmental fee, which Bighorn Meadows invests in projects to help remove, reduce and eliminate the creation of greenhouse gases.” These projects will include bigger and better recycling programs, green lifestyle services such as bike racks, and alternative in-room energy solutions such as energy-efficient lighting. Another exciting venture for this accommodator is the introduction of on-site mountain bike and paddleboard rentals. The rentals will include everything you need to start your adventure straight from the resort! Customize Your Vacation Bighorn Meadows’ concierge guest services can customize any vacation, whether you would like to arrange specific activities in advance (such as golf tee times or activity tours), have your fridge stocked before you arrive, or have a bottle of wine ready for a romantic evening in. They also offer vacation packages that can be designed to suit you and your family’s vacation style. Plan your perfect Columbia Valley retreat with Bighorn Meadows Resort! Kootenay National Park One of the highlights of spending time in the Village of Radium Hot Springs is easy access to the wonders of Kootenay National Park. Kootenay is part of the traditional lands of the Ktunaxa and Shuswap First Nations and was designated a national park in 1920. The park’s ecology, climate and geography are extremely diverse. Glacier peaks line the continental divide in the north, while the southern semi-arid grasslands provide a warm, dry home for tiny prickly pear cacti. Kootenay’s wildlife includes bighorn sheep, moose, bears, coyotes and numerous bird species. Wildlife often grazes and travels alongside roadways. Be alert and pull well off the highway when stopping to view wildlife. Remember to view from a distance — it is illegal to approach, feed or harass wildlife. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore Kootenay to their heart’s content. The park boasts a variety of picnicking sites, hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, hidden backcountry treasures, three seasonal campgrounds and its famous Radium Hot Springs pools. During the summer, Parks Canada interpreters lead guided hikes to the Stanley Glacier Fossil Site and offer hands-on learning programs.

A highlight of a visit to Kootenay National Park is the Radium Hot Springs pools. Located at the base of a dramatic rock wall in Sinclair Canyon, these hot springs have been refreshing travellers for thousands of years. Long before the arrival of European settlers, First Nations peoples came to soak in these warm waters. Near the turn of the 20th century, an analysis of the spring’s water found harmless traces of radon — a product of radium decomposition — giving the hot springs their name. A daily or annual pass is required when stopping in the mountain national parks. The money collected goes toward park improvements, trail maintenance, interpretation and information services. Camping requires separate permits. A National Parks fishing licence is required for all anglers. Park entry passes and fishing permits can be purchased from the park entry gate or the Kootenay National Park Visitor Centre. For more information about Kootenay National Park, please visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/kootenay. To plan your visit to the Radium Hot Springs pools, please go to www.hotsprings.ca.

Travel the Columbia Valley Golf Trail
17th green at The Springs, Radium Hot Springs
The Columbia Valley Golf Trail is home to eight golf courses located between Radium Hot Springs and Fairmont Hot Springs in the Columbia Valley region of British Columbia. The Trail’s spectacular courses each offer unique golf experiences — from charming to world class, and all within a 40-minute drive. At the north end of the trail on Highway 93/95 is the Village of Radium Hot Springs, where you will find The Springs at Radium and the Radium Resort Course. Drive south for 15 minutes through the valley towards Invermere on the Lake to reach Eagle Ranch, Copper Point and The Ridge at Copper Point. Windermere Valley is approximately five minutes south of Invermere on the highway. At the southernmost end of the trail about 15 minutes from Invermere, you’ll find Riverside and Mountainside golf courses located in the quaint village of Fairmont Hot Springs. The Springs at Radium has earned its reputation as one of Canada’s premier golf destinations. Recently ranked in the top 59 of Canadian public courses and featuring go-forbroke par-5s, heroic tee shots over ravines, and a terrific quartet of par-3s, this compelling layout never gets old. The Springs Course offers exceptional golf in a spectacular and dramatic setting. Radium Resort is cut out of an alpine forest and features tight, tree-lined fairways, undulating greens and dramatic elevation changes. The Resort Course also features three new holes that opened in the summer of 2012. The course can be forgiving to the average golfer — just like you would expect from an old friend — but it offers challenges for the low handicapper. Eagle Ranch Resort engages you in unique experiences that far transcend the ordinary. The Resort’s centrepiece — eighteen magical holes of golf with open fairways and 360-degree views of the valley — is perched along ancient bluffs overlooking the Columbia River, a stirring setting made even more dramatic by its Rocky and Purcell Mountain views. Eagle Ranch consistently receives high ranking among the top 100 courses in Canada and the top 59 Canadian public courses. Copper Point — The Point is a natural, lay-of-the-land 24 • R a dium H o t Spr i n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 4 /2 01 5
route with numerous classic elements, such as roughly hewn bunkers and excellent use of existing hills and ravines. The architectural merit of this design warrants play on its own. But what will really sell you on Copper Point is the pristine setting, beautiful conditions and complete amenities — not to mention the spectacular views of the Kootenay Rockies from nearly every hole. Copper Point — The Ridge takes full advantage of the character-filled terrain it’s situated on. The innovative design features full length par-3 and par-4 holes that maintain the perfect blend of playability and challenge, appealing to every level of golfer. The course wraps around the spectacular new Copper Point Resort, offering magnificent views in every direction. Windermere Valley exudes those rare elements of total relaxation and unpretentious golf in a first-rate setting. While Windermere may be shorter than average in length, it’s definitely not short on character or beauty. The picturesque valley location and wonderful conditioning will ensure golfers of all skill levels will have fun. With excellent teaching programs, a fully stocked pro shop, a restaurant, and a laid-back atmosphere that will definitely win you over, Windermere makes for an extremely enjoyable golf experience. Mountainside Golf Course, which is part of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, has been satisfying guests for over 40 years. The course is pressed against the sunny, west-facing slopes of the Rockies, with velvety fairways and a host of riveting holes that will test every club in your bag. As one of the original golf courses in the Valley, Mountainside has been the proud recipient of numerous accolades and awards. Also in Fairmont Hot Springs is Riverside Golf Course. “A river runs through it” truly describes this spectacular course located near the headwaters of the mighty Columbia River. The river meanders gracefully throughout the contemporary course, which is laced with memorable golf holes that showcase the striking nature of this property. Between the golf courses you are sure to discover warm water lakes, beautiful beaches, hot springs, adventure and... a great golf vacation!

Sinclair Creek Trail (Radium):
Sinclair Falls Photo by Kathy Darwent
Radium Hot Springs and the surrounding area’s diverse geographical features create some exceptional hiking opportunities. With everything from dry, rolling grasslands to glacier-fed lakes and everything in between, it doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or you are an experienced backcountry enthusiast, the area has trails and trips that fit any skill level. The Radium Hot Springs region is a mecca for hiking and backcountry trips. Your options are unlimited with many access points leaving right from town. Popular short day hikes near Radium include the Old Coach Trail, Juniper Trail (in Kootenay National Park) together with the Redstreak Campground Trail (also in the park) or the Radium Village Sinclair Creek Trail. Remember you are responsible for your own safety. Before heading out, make sure you check ahead with a Visitor Centre staff member for maps, road access information, directions, hike details and trail conditions. Please remember a park pass is required to cycle or hike in Kootenay National Park. Be prepared for all weather conditions; the weather in the mountains can change quickly. Pack adequate food, water and clothing for the hike you have selected, and be prepared for emergencies by always carrying a First Aid kit. And don’t forget to be bear aware! Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
A short 3.5-kilometre round trip walk starting from the north end of Radium following Sinclair Creek. Access: The trailhead can be accessed through Rotary Park (across from the Prestige Hotel) or by travelling down Foresters Landing Road, turning right at the three-way junction near the mill, then staying left at the fork to reach the trailhead and picnic area.
Old Coach Trail (Radium to Dry Gulch): A 9-kilometre (one-way) trail with moderate elevation gain, perfect for walking or mountain biking. The trail winds along the Columbia River and offers great views of the wetlands and Columbia Valley. An interpretive trail guide is available. Access: Park at the Radium Visitor Information Centre, cross to the west side of Highway 93/95 and walk down Main Street West to the corner of Edelweiss Street from Dry Gulch, turn west off Highway 93/95 (opposite Eacrett Road) and park beside the south trailhead kiosk.
Juniper Trail (KNP): A short 3.2-kilometre trail that starts at the hot pools and offers a spectacular view of Radium and the surrounding mountains from the top of Sinclair Canyon. Access: Park at the hot pools parking lot, take the old access road to Radium Lodge and the trailhead is on the left.
Redstreak Campground Trail (KNP): The opposite side of the Juniper Trail that leads to Redstreak Campground. The trail meanders back from the hot pools to Redstreak Campground with a quick stop at the Place of Silence Peace Park. Access: From the hot pools upper deck by the bathrooms.
