8 • DTSS ~ Class of 2013 Name: Josephine Mouly Josephine Mouly is Alberta-bound, heading off to the University of Lethbridge next fall to start studying two subjects — kinesiology and education. “I like teaching little kids and I like sports, so I think I will like the program in Lethbridge,” said Ms. Mouly. The soon-to-be David Thompson Secondary School graduate has lived in Invermere since she was 8 years old and attended Windermere Elementary School before moving up to the secondary school. The highlight of her five years at David Thompson was going to provincials for both volleyball and crosscountry track, she said. Although Ms. Mouly is excited to be going to university, she said she will miss Invermere’s friendly secondary school. “I think it’s a really good school. The people here are really nice. It’s small,” she said, adding that she picked the University of Lethbridge, because she thinks she will enjoy the pace of life there. “Lethbridge is one of the closest universities and it’s a small city, smaller than Calgary,” said Ms. Mouly. “I definitely prefer a small city.” Ms. Mouly’s advice for next year’s incoming grade 8 students at David Thompson is simple — try hard and have fun. Her favourite teacher at David Thompson Secondary School is science teacher Ms. Brown and her favourite subjects are phys ed and English. Name: Madison Haynes After I graduate I will be attending the University of Victoria to study sciences. I like the idea of going to Victoria because its somewhere new for me to live and meet new people. I will be taking sciences because I am hoping to work towards my bachelor’s of science during the next few years. I’m really looking forward to having a relaxing last summer with all my friends and for fall I just can’t wait to meet new people and study the subjects I want. I’m worried about being in a completely new place, it’s going to be a lot different compared to Fairmont Hot Springs. I moved to Fairmont from Vancouver about 6 years ago now and I have loved my time in the valley. All the activities here are amazing, and I have really enjoyed the skiing. DTSS has been awesome, it’s crazy to think its almost over. It’s been a great high school to grow up in. Since it’s a small school you really get to know a lot of people well. My highlight during my five years at DTSS is my time on the senior girls soccer team and my time at the vet clinic for work experience. I will definitely miss this school and valley when I move, especially my family and friends. My favourite teacher is Becca Wright —throughout this year she has helped me out so much, especially with the soccer team. I love my sciences, I find them challenging for sure but they are so interesting. I am hoping to major in biology since I love studying animals. My advice for next year’s incoming class is to just enjoy your time at DTSS, it goes by fast and before you know it you’re done. ski racing ere and continue rm ve c In si in ra G ay n st ti Name: Mar off school to be taking a year ill w c focus si ra G n ti Mar to being able to d . ar am rw Te fo i Sk ok . lo .C I the B one day and lthough I am competitively on orld Cup circuit id Mr. Grasic. “A W sa e ,” th ol ho on sc ce t ra ou ng a year off. ry ab “I hope to iversity after taki ut having to wor un ho it to w go g I iin n e he sk he w in Invermere sinc 100 per cent on ed learned in school I liv s uff ha st e te th ua ng ad ti rget ndary School gr worried about fo Thompson Seco id av valley offers. June 21, 2013

The David Thompson Secondary School class of 2013 is set to graduate and will soon scatter across the country — bound for the Prairies, the mountain slopes, the Coast and many places between, to move to cities big and small and even, in one case, staying in town to race competitively with the B.C. ski team. Here’s a quick look at four graduating students, their future plans and their thoughts on growing up in the valley. Compiled By Steve Hubrecht Name: Luke Zehnder I plan on going to the University of Alberta in Edmonton next fall for first-year engineering. I am going straight into university because I don’t want to lose the momentum I have coming out of high school. I feel if I took a year off now, I would not want to go back to school. I chose U of A because it has good medical and engineering programs. I am not sure whether I want to go into medicine or engineering, so I chose a school well known for both . This enables me to switch streams next year if I wish without losing too many classes. This summer I look forward to getting some backpacking in, logging some volunteer hours at the airport, working with my Grandpa on the farm as well as having some time to spend hanging out with my family and friends. In the fall I’m looking forward to going off to university to meet new people with similar interests as well as getting involved in intramural sports teams. I also like to play guitar and sing, so hopefully I will have some time to do that too. I generally don’t worry much but if I was to pick something to worry about it would probably be that my relationships with old friends from Invermere might not survive the distance. I hope to keep in contact with the kids I grew up with, but it will be tough since we are spreading all across Canada. I was born in the Invermere hospital and have lived on the Zehnder farm for 18 years. I like Invermere, it’s just that there are not many jobs for an engineer here. I do, however, think that it will be a great place to move back to in my later years, as it is a beautiful town with lots of outdoor activities that I enjoy. I do have many fond memories of DTSS and I don’t think I would choose another school if ever I had to do it again. DTSS is a good school, most of the teachers are nice, approachable and above all else were able to teach me well, although I guess we won’t find out how well until next year. Probably the best part was all the opportunities for being involved in sports and leadership. Because we are a small school, you can play on any sports team you wish, even if you’re not the best athlete. The only complaint I have is that it gets depressing when the sun isn’t shining, because it gets quite dark in the school. The highlight has been my grade twelve year. I’ve enjoyed everything from the sports teams and making new friends to even enjoying a few of my classes — haha. When I am freezing my butt off in Edmonton eating cafeteria food instead of my mother’s delicious cooking, you can bet that I will be missing Invermere.
