Planners back consulting on future of Invermere

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The update of Invermere’s official community plan is inching closer to completion. Planners with the district and Calgary-based consultants Urban Systems set up display boards explaining the project to the public in downtown Invermere late last week.

The display boards, which were set up in front of the old Lake Auto building on Invermere’s main street on Thursday, September 18th and Friday, September 19th, presented an idea of what the official community plan will look like once it has been incorporated with the In-

tegrated Community Sustainability Plan — or Imagine Invermere, as the sustainability plan is often called.

“Basically, we’re out here coming back to the community to talk about what we heard (during similar public consultation in the same location in June) and seeking more input,” said district planner Rory Hromadnik.

“It’s been a great process. Participation from the community has been overwhelming. It’s really good to see that level of public involvement,” said Urban Systems senior planner Lauren Bartlette.

The week-long June consultation session attracted 250 people, she said, and the more recent consultation drew about 50 people on Thursday, September 18th.

When The Pioneer talked to her mid-Friday, it was on pace for a similar number on Friday, September 19th.

Mr. Hromadnik said the planners had also consulted directly with Invermere’s business community and with community members in Athalmer.

Several themes had become apparent from both the June consultation and the more recent consultation, according to Mr. Hromadnik, including accessibility issues, the identity of downtown Invermere, and the dispersal of businesses outside the district’s boundaries (to the Crossroads area, for instance), community improvement initiatives, the lake, and having Athalmer serve as a gateway to Invermere.

Communities need to pick up where A.C.E. is leaving off

By Erin Knutson Special to The Pioneer The dissolution of the non-profit organization A.C.E (Accessibility in the Community for Everyone) has been announced in recent weeks and its conclusion marks the end of an exceptional decade in accessibility awareness, as well as some remarkable closing initiatives.

The mission statement of A.C.E has been championing the steps taken by the local community in negotiating a great human rights movement: the accommodation, awareness, and education of disabled individuals in the community as well as facilitating their independence. Effectively establishing the needs of an increasing aging

population is also cited in the non-profit’s 2014 Accessibility Ambassador Project.

“It’s going to take a village,” said Wendy Rockafellow, former A.C.E ambassador.

The ambitious Accessibility Ambassador Project is currently receiving partial funding from the Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Initiatives and Affected Areas, along with financial support from the Village of Canal Flats, the Regional District of East Kootenay, Areas F and G, the Village of Radium Hot Springs and the District of Invermere. From the top down, accessibility involves the United Nations (Canada was among the first signatories for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) and the federal government as well as municipalities, corporations and citizens.

• On Thursday, September 18th at 6 p.m., the Columbia Valley detachment attended to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 93/95 at Juniper Heights. A ‘94 BMW motorcycle driven by a 49-year-old male from Valemont rear-ended a pickup truck driven by a 58-year-old male from Invermere, as the pickup had slowed down to turn right into Juniper Heights. The motorcycle driver and female passenger were flown to a Calgary hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

toy gun at an eight-year-old as a joke, while holstering the replica gun. The child became scared to the point where the mother reported his actions to the police. The replica gun was observed by the mother, which heightened her concerns. The male has been spoken to. Any further such complaints should be reported to the police for possible followup with the Crown. It’s one thing for kids to play with toy guns with each other, but when an adult unexpectedly does so, it will seldom be taken as simple child’s play.

• On Sunday, September 21st at 12:16 a.m., detachment members responded to a disturbance complaint involving an intoxicated male in Edgewater. The male continued his aggressive behaviour and was arrested for drunk in public.

• On Sunday, September 21st at 3 p.m., the detachment responded to a residence in the 5000 block of Wills Road in Fairmont to assist the local fire department with a garage fire. It is believed that cigarettes or a candle may have started the fire in the garage. Quick action by a neighbour put the fire out before serious damage could be done.

• On Sunday, September 21st at 4:55 p.m., the detachment received a report of a paraglider going down into the trees off Mount Swansea. The male, an experienced paraglider, managed to land without causing any injuries to himself. The male was picked up and driven back to his car.

• On Sunday, September 21st at 7 p.m., detachment members responded to a single-vehicle accident on Athalmer Road near the detachment. A 2012 Nissan Titan driven by a 51-year-old male from Radium went off the road and collided with a utility pole, cutting it in half. The lone driver was uninjured and displayed signs of having consumed alcohol. An ASD demand was read and the driver failed. The vehicle was impounded and the driver’s licence prohibited for 90 days.

Having served the Columbia Valley community in an invaluable fashion for the years it has been in operation, the final parting message from A.C.E. is loud and clear — it’s time for everyone to take responsibility for accessibility initiatives in our region.

What we’re talking about is intentionally incorporating accessibility into our community’s design. Whether it’s a new condo development, house or commercial space, or a renovation on an existing building, making sure that everyone, regardless of mobility issues, can park nearby, come in independantly through the main door and have room to manoeuvre once they’re inside, is the only way we’re truly going to be able to say we have an inclusive — not exclusive — valley community.

Step in to stop Site C Dear Editor: For the third time in 30 years, 10,000 hectares of B.C.’s most productive farm land is slated to be submerged in favour of a hydroelectric dam that would produce power no one really needs.

In a month from now, a decision will be made on BC Hydro’s proposed Site C dam on the Peace River. The 1,100-megawatt, $7.9-billion project would generate enough energy to power 450,000 homes, while flooding an 83-kilometre stretch of the Peace, plus 24 kilometres of tributary waterways.

Warm Pacific air flows into the Peace River valley, combining with long summer days and high-quality soil to make the area astoundingly productive for agriculture.

More than half of the 4,523 hectares of agricultural land to be flooded is comprised of Class 1 and 2 soils.

A federal-provincial Joint Review Panel

To the 22,000 residents of the Peace River region, the idea of Site C is even less popular than the concept of the Jumbo Glacier ski resort to many local residents. Experts at the Joint Review Panel hearings indicated B.C. doesn’t need the energy from Site C, and if we ever do, there are far cheaper sources from which to obtain it.

How ‘bout them DTSS apples?

The annual DTSS Band Apples sale will be rolled out differently than in previous years due to a poor crop yield in the Creston orchard that usually provides the fundraiser’s juicy product.

“This year, the yield was so bad, it gave (the orchardist) about ten per cent of the apples off some trees for some varieties,” said DTSS band director Greg Constable.

Several people have suggested that although the district is not bad when it comes to accessibility, there’s still more that needs to be done, he added.

“There’s an understanding that the downtown is quaint and has its own appeal, but there’s also an understanding that we need to keep development efforts there moving along,” said Mr. Hromadnik,

“The lake is the reason Invermere is here. People want to make sure we protect it. We’ve had a number of comments around improving accessibility of the lake. I would agree there’s a lack of it.

There’s just not a lot of spots available because of the rail tracks (which run along much of the lakeshore within the district’s boundaries),” he said.

The planners debriefed council on their public consultation sessions on Friday, September 19th and were then spending the rest of September putting together a draft of the official community plan update, said Mr. Hromadnik, with the hopes of having the draft go to council for initial reading sometime in October and then adopted later this year.

Raincheque for prescribed fire in Radium On Monday, September 22, 2014, Parks Canada fire management staff attempted prescribed fire operations within the Redstreak Mountain prescribed fire unit in Kootenay National Park. Specialists planned to ignite a 50-hectare section. Desired results were not achieved due to an equipment issue and incoming clouds. However, crews were able to get some slash pile burning along the upper ridge fire guard, which will help reinforce that guard for the next time they attempt this prescribed fire.

Prescribed fires occurred in 2007, 2010 and 2011 in conjunction with the Redstreak Restoration Project.

The objective in 2011 was to burn a 22-hectare section to secure the lower elevation south guard for the proposed Redstreak prescribed fire/restoration project. The Redstreak prescribed fire and restoration project is part of a long-term plan to restore bighorn sheep winter range, to restore fire-maintained grassland and open forest ecosystems in the Columbia Valley, and to reduce the risk of wildfire to Redstreak Campground and the community of Radium Hot Springs. Movie Review: The Signal Reviewed by Lizzie Midyette The Signal can only be described as a cinematic lovechild between David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. Part Space Odyssey, part Matrix, and with a level of acceptable weirdness that can only be described as Twin Peaks-esque, this movie is not only suspenseful but also mildly hallucinogenic throughout.

Explaining the premise is usually fairly straightforward when reviewing movies in the sci-fi genre, yet to do so here doesn’t do it justice and would give away far too many aspects as the viewer struggles to make sense of what transpires on screen. However, so viewers know what to expect… Nic

and two of his friends are on a road trip.

Everything seems to be going smoothly until a computer genius lures them into an isolated area. Upon waking up from sudden darkness, Nic discovers a waking nightmare from which he cannot escape.

Without giving too much away, fans of the now classic movie The Matrix will practically devour Laurence Fishburne’s performance skills in the movie, with Brenton Thwaite providing a particularly satisfying protagonist in his portrayal of Nic as he struggles with the obstacles he has no choice but to deal with.

There are some particularly suspenseful scenes, made all the more disturbing by excellent cinematic timing and use of light.

The movie is visually stunning and hard to turn your attention away from, as unsettling as some scenes may be.

Make no mistake; this is not a film rife with an overload of computer-generated special effects. Where used, they become enhancements to the story and Nic’s development through his journey.

The Signal is a must-see for those of us who are entertained by being slightly disturbed. While the movie does not contain graphic images, it’s unnerving at times and definitely a little uncomfortable to sit through. Discomfort aside, The Signal is original even as it pays homage to some sci-fi greats.

La Cafamore returns to Invermere with new twist

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff La Cafamore will soon be back in the valley again.

The classical music group has been performing in the Kootenay regions for more than six years, and has had numerous stops in Invermere during that time.

Although the composition of the group has morphed during the years, the one constant is the band’s commitment to classical music, and according to group member Carolyn Cameron, every concert has its own challenges and rewards — which, for Ms. Cameron in this tour, includes playing the piano instead of the violin she normally plays.

“People often ask which instrument I prefer,” said Ms. Cameron. “I seem to go in phases where I prefer one or the other. The thing about piano is that you can potentially play 10 wrong notes at a time whereas on violin, generally there is only one.”

Ms. Cameron said she’s delighted the Invermere show will be at Christ Church Trinity once again, as she finds the piano there quite good.

“Whenever we have the need for a

fantastic piano, we play at Christ Church Trinity,” she said.

The band is dubbing this tour as “Trios with A Twist” since none of the works the group is performing were originally written for the violin, viola and piano combination the band is using on the tour.

The group will perform three pieces at the Invermere show (and the other concerts on this tour) — one by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one by Robert Schumann and one

by Johannes Brahms.

“The Mozart trio was arranged for our (instrument) combination with the composer’s approval, although it was originally performed with clarinet, viola and piano.

When the instrumentation changes, the whole character of the piece is changed,” said Ms. Cameron. “Regardless of the instrument combination, the melodies of these works are incredible.”

Ms. Cameron promises those familiar with the tradition of the works will not be disappointed with La Cafamore’s new takes.

The show at Christ Church Trinity is on Friday, October 10th, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets — available at the door — cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and kids under 12 years old are free.

The carbon connection Valley Skies

By Brian Fenerty Pioneer Columnist Q: What do long trains in our valley and the stars above have in common?

A: Carbon — carbon in the coal and certain stars called carbon stars, which shine very red (or orange-red) at a certain stage if carbon predominates. The early stars of our universe only involved hydrogen and helium, but strong gravity and stellar processes produced heavier elements for next-generation stars, even our thirdgeneration Sun. Plus, the components that swirled around the new stars became planets, comets asteroids, zodiacal dust and so on.

One giant country where coal is used (China) puts so many combustion by-products into the air that in many of its cities, the sun’s disk is not discernible! At night, they may not be able to see stars of any colour, much less the striking reds of carbon stars.

Happily, here in the Columbia Valley, we can easily see our night sky. I have charted four carbon stars for you this month for starters if you are new to them. The one in Pisces should be bright enough to see just by eye; the fainter three need binoculars or a small telescope to gather that bit of extra light. (Note: not all reddish stars glow this colour due to a carbon-dominated stellar layer.)

The chart also shows galaxies M31 in Andromeda and elusive “face-on” (seen from the top not side, so light is spread out and more vague) M33 near wellnamed Triangulum.

M33 is said to have lots of carbon stars — but, at maybe 3,000,000 light years away, those ones are definitely too far for you or I to spot!

I arrived and when I asked the American driver what the problem was, he was livid as he was being stripped of his constitutional right to bear arms. Had to calm him down, so I asked him to step outside. I walked him close to the marker that separated the States from Canada. I asked him if he heard of the phrase, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. He acknowledged he was aware of the phrase. I pointed to the border marker and advised him on the other side of the marker was the United States of America. I then informed him that he was now on the opposite side and I said, “Welcome to Rome.”

I explained it was better that Customs found and seized the gun rather than the police down the road. He was one upset American, so I didn’t add salt to his wound and bring up their little jaunt into Canada in 1812.

Why the fall season is for planting The Green File

By Mark Cullen Pioneer Columnist Your understanding of how plants work can have a powerful effect on the success rate of your work in the garden. I am here to clear up any confusion that you might have on the subject of “what plants want”. The next five minutes of reading will arm you with the confidence to go out into the world of plants and put them in the ground knowing that you did the best that you could. #1: Buy a plant with young roots Fall is for planting. I like planting now and generally I have more success with September and October planting than I do with spring planting. With the cool temperatures of fall, the “top growth” of winter-hardy woody perennials slows and hardens off. At the same time, the roots are busy putting down young feeding roots — yes, the same ones that the aforementioned maple tree did not have — which will provide support for substantial growth come spring.

How do you know good roots?

You will know that a woody plant has the right kind

YOUR MONEY Preparing for retirement

Transitioning from working life to retirement is a big adjustment for most people, and one that requires careful financial planning. Many people retire wondering if they have done everything they should have. In the years leading up to retirement, it pays to consider several factors, including those listed below.

Calculate monthly income The first step is to make sure that you can afford to retire. This means ensuring that your projected monthly income is sufficient to cover your income needs.

Contact Service Canada and ask them to produce an estimate of your monthly Canada Pension Plan (CPP) payment and Old Age Security (OAS) benefit. If you have an employer-sponsored pension plan, have them also produce an estimate or refer to a recent pension statement. Next, speak to your financial advisor and have he or she calculate the income you could expect from your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and other savings accounts.

Will your savings and pension sources provide enough income? If so, congratulations! You can afford to retire. If not, you may still be able to retire by adjusting spending or working part-time in retirement.

Apply for government pensions This doesn’t have to wait until you retire. In fact, it’s advisable to apply for government pensions well in advance of retirement. Some people report that it can take the better

part of a year to start receiving CPP payments. OAS benefits are automatically paid based on your prior year’s tax return.

Lower-income Canadians may qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) benefit, which is added to their monthly OAS payment. Like CPP, GIS benefits must be applied for. Depending on your personal situation, it might make sense to collect CPP payments at a later date.

Discuss this with your advisor.

Turn savings into income If income will be drawn from one’s RRSPs, they may need to be converted to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) first, particularly if there is no other income which qualifies for the pension tax credit.

Many people reduce risk in their investment portfolios prior to retirement, but this depends heavily on the market cycle. If the markets are doing poorly, it could make sense to wait until things have recovered.

Pay off debts Ideally, people are debt-free when they retire, and becoming so should be a focus. People nearing retirement should look to eliminate, consolidate or restructure debt in advance; and this can be done anytime.

Review insurance When transitioning from working to retirement, many people find that both their insurance coverage and insur-

ance needs change. If you receive extended health benefits through work and want to keep them, check with your employer to see if there is a way to do so.

Next, consider your life and disability insurance policies. Do you still need life insurance? Are the premiums still affordable? Private disability insurance policies should be cancelled when one enters retirement as they are no longer valid if the insured is not working.

For other insurances like home, vehicle and travel, check with providers to see if you qualify for any age-related or experience discounts.

Review wills and POA As with any major life-changing event, pre-retirement is a good time to review and update one’s will and powers of attorney. Those who do not have a legal will should get one right away to ensure their estate is handled the way they want. A Power of Attorney (POA) allows someone to make financial and other decisions for people when they can’t make them themselves. A POA must be very carefully chosen, and is usually a capable relative or close friend.

Final thoughts Retirement is a time of great change in a person’s life. People should give themselves plenty of time and consider all options carefully before making any final decisions. Your financial advisor can — and is happy to — help with this transition.

Rockies reinvent classic broadcasting duo

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff After a 25-year break, a Rockies broadcasting duo that reigned at one point during the team’s decades-old dynasty has been reborn, but their medium has evolved and one role will be filled by a family descendant of the original pair.

For those watching the KIJHL online, Barry Brown-John and Jean-Paul Askey will be calling the play-by-play over a live video feed of every Rockies home game this season.

For four or five years in the 1980s, Barry along with Jean-Paul’s father, Gordon, were the radio broadcasters for the Columbia Valley during the team’s “heyday,” as general manager Ross Bidinger described. The Rockies have won three titles since joining the KIJHL in 1978 — all of which came in 1988, 1989 and 1990. Barry and Gordon broadcasted up until the end of 1989.

“Barry was around when Columbia Valley had their glory days,” said Jean-Paul, adding that the team was coached by Tom Renney, who later served as the head coach for four NHL teams.

Jean-Paul remembers listening to Barry and his father broadcasting together, and said that Trail and Nelson were the Rockies biggest rivals at the time.

“There was a much different setup back then,” said JeanPaul, who was introduced to Barry — his late father’s coworker — at

just four years old. “(Jean-Paul)’s enthusiastic; we work well bouncing off one another,” Barry said. “Gordon was maybe a little more cynical than Jean-Paul, but they’ve both got a good sense of humour.”

Having broadcasted with both father and son, Barry said he shares a similar chemistry with Jean-Paul as he did with Gordon. And having been away from the microphone for 25 seasons, Jean-Paul helps Barry to fill the technological gap.

Barry recalled producing his radio broadcasts live in the 1980s when there was little co-ordination between the play-by-play and commercial content.

“We didn’t have much for technology,” he said. “We had to use a stop watch to time when the commercial was over. It was rudimentary, but it worked.”

Whether you listened to them in the 1980s, or if you’ve just begun following the Rockies, Barry admits to some bias.

“We’re homers, no bones about it — we’re cheering for the Rockies,” he said. “Some say we’re harder on the players than the parents want us to be.”

As a young professional in the 1980s, Barry boosted his real estate career in the valley by volunteering as the Rockies broadcaster. After a break from both local real estate and hockey broadcasting, Barry is back continuing to offer both services.

KIJHL rule change gives Rockies a leg up

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The Columbia Valley Rockies have a new geographical advantage over many of their KIJHL (Kootenay International Junior Hockey League) counterparts, after the league relaxed regulations on recruiting, removing the limit of Albertan players allowed on the roster.

“There’s Fernie, Golden, Kimberley, and Columbia Valley — if you’re from Alberta, you’re going to want to play in one of those four towns,” said Rockies general manager Ross Bidinger. “We had a big turnover in players this year, so we were able to find a good amount of quality talent.”

Previously, a limit of eight “import” players were allowed on each team in the league. While the rule still applies to non-Canadian players, there is no limit to those from out-of-province. (Before the rule change, non-B.C. players could have their “import” status removed if they spent more than one season with the same team.)

“It’s a major, tremendous rule change for us. It’s been a long time coming,” said Rockies president Al Miller. “They’ve opened up the eastern part of B.C. and made it much more viable.”

The Rockies current roster is expected to undergo a few tweaks, but as of last week’s lineup, 18 of the team’s 27 players had their hometowns listed in Alberta.

Doan Smith, a returning veteran from last year’s team, is now 19 and looking forward to leading this year’s squad. The new import rule in the KIJHL has brought a number of talented 18 year olds to town who played Triple or Double A hockey last season, but may be experiencing their first time away from home. “It feels good and gives me a great opportunity to take on a leadership role while helping the younger players,” Smith says about his new role as captain. He adds that he shares the responsibility with a great group of assistants, drawn from other vets.

Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund Request for Proposals The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the area from Spillimacheen to Canal Flats utilizing the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF). To apply for funding go to www.kootenayconservation.ca and click on the Local Conservation Fund tab. Review the Terms of Reference paying particular attention to Section 8 – Fund Design and then apply using the application form provided.

CVLCF funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will have priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band, or local government.

Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. Multi-year projects are acceptable to a maximum three years. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDEK for final funding approval.

Closing dates for project submissions is 4:30 p.m. October 31st, 2014.

Projects specific to land acquisition and/or conservation covenants may be submitted at any time during the year.

Project proposals must be delivered by email to info@kootenayconservation.ca.

S OBITUARY S Woznica, David Joseph (Zapper): December 30th, 1967 – September 18th, 2014 It is with much sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of Dave (Zapper) Woznica on Thursday September 18th.

Dave was born in Oakville, Ontario December 30th, 1967.

Dave moved out to B.C. in 2003 and knew that he had finally found his home.

Dave worked with several companies in his years in the valley, and he was happiest when he was working with his hands, whether it was building and renovating homes or butchering at Mountainside Market and Valley Foods.

And finally as a member of the Canfor family in Radium.

Dave was an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of the Lake Windermere District Rod & Gun Club and was passionate about hunting, especially bow hunting, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time out in the bush with his best friend Kent. Dave also loved sports and was a die-hard Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Daves real love in life though was his family who will miss him terribly. Dave is survived by his grandmother Beattie, father George Woznica, his mother Betty (Wayne) McIntosh, his daughters Jessie, Hannah, and Mikayla and step-children Paige, Caitlin and Brandon, his sister Jodi, and brother Joel, as well as his niece Danielle (Kyle) and great niece Baya, and nephew Adam, as well as his other nephews in Ontario. He is also survived by his long time partner Charlene Fuller and many friends who will continue to mourn his loss.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

SALAD NICOISE ½ lb New Potatoes, ½ lb mixed Salad Greens quartered 1 cup Lemon Vinaigrette ¼ cup Nicoise Olives, pitted 2 hard boiled Eggs ½ Onion, thinly sliced 3 plum Tomatoes, sliced 1 tblsp Capers 1 fresh Tuna Filet, seared 1/3 lb Green Beans, blanched Cook potatoes in salted water until tender but firm, about 15 minutes. Drain and cool.

In a large bowl mix potatoes, olives, onion, tuna (chunked) and beans.

Refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours.

In a large bowl toss the greens with vinaigrette and top with potato mixture.

Garnish with eggs, tomatoes and capers.

It’s a collaborative effort that is far too big an issue for one sector to tackle on its own, she said.

“It has to be in everyone’s mind — accessibility, living in a welcoming inclusive community, where everyone is welcome and has the right to participation, including equal participation and equal opportunity.”

According to Ms. Rockafellow, some communities are making accessibility a part of their economic development plan as being accessible, senior-friendly and adaptive is good for the economy.

“It can attract people to a community and to settle here.”

The discontinuation of A.C.E will put these important initiatives into the hands of everyone in the valley — this is the message that Ms. Rockafellow and past A.C.E president and Invermere councillor Spring Hawes have been recently advocating to valley council members. The courageous non-profit of ten years will be handing its reigns over to the valley community as part of its dissolution strategy, and its existing funds will be donated to the Panorama Adaptive Snow Sports Association.

“Making sure that the language around accessibility is included in Imagine

Invermere’s OCP… will open the door for partnerships with the municipal governments,” is also part of the plan according to Ms. Rockafellow.

A.C.E will also be channelling remaining funds into paying for tools to make accessibility user-friendly, such as an app to indicate accessible areas within parks and trails and enhancing the Chamber’s website for local businesses.

“When people join the Chamber of Commerce and list their business, there will be an option on the menu to advertise that they’re an accessible business.” she said.

After successfully completing a circuit of the Regional District of East Kootenay, Invermere and Canal Flats councils with a presentation on the upcoming closure, it’s clear the dedicated advocates have a mission.

“It is our hope that government and business continue to press for inclusion, diversity and accessibility in our Columbia Valley communities,” said Ms. Rockafellow.

Bringing the Columbia Valley community up to speed and encouraging the healthy manifestation of A.C.E. policies toward the development of building a safe, accessible and disabled-friendly community should be top priorities moving forward, she said.

“It’s not good to do it halfway — it’s patchwork, it’s not contiguous and it’s problematic in that people with disabilities are looking for independence — they want to be able to do it themselves without help.”

Helping health care Invermere Campus of College of the Rockies (COTR) celebrated with the Health Care Assistant graduates on Wednesday, September 17th at Copper Point Resort.

The Health Care Assistant program is a 32-week program that covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide personal care to individuals in residential care as well as in community settings (home support and assisted living). The 2014 class was one of the strongest graduating classes that COTR has seen over the past five years of the program. Out of those graduating, one student achieved the Dean’s List with grades between 80 and 89 per cent, five students achieved the Honours List with grades ranging from 90 to 94 per cent and three students achieved Scholar Status with grades ranging from 95 to 100 per cent. All graduating students have either secured great-paying local jobs or are in the interview process with either Interior Health or Golden Life Management. The demand for health care assistants in our community continues to grow and if people are interested in joining the health care team of professionals, either drop into the college or call 250-342-3210. After darkness, light

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly The human heart — does anyone truly understand it? Do any of us know the source of our deepest desires, what’s behind the choices we make, or why we do the things we do? I lived many years never asking myself those questions. But once I began, light dawned.

There was a time when I could party with the best of them. Waking up with a splitting headache and queasy stomach, or scrapes and bruises from who knows where, didn’t slow me down.

Partying with my friends meant everything to me. They accepted me and I was no longer lonely. I thought I’d found what I was looking for. This was life.

Then, like clouds gathering on the horizon, questions slowly appeared. Wrestling with a guilty conscience after . . . ‘Readying’ from page 14 “You don’t get danger pay in this job,” he said, with a grin. “People who get married in this area seem to like unusual places, such as the edges of canyons, on rafts, in canoes.”

Mr. Stuart-Hill even did a marriage ceremony in the Cranbrook hospital. The bride was involved in a skiing accident the day before the wedding and ended up in the hospital, unable to leave, so the venue was changed to the hospital.

Mr. Stuart-Hill said the best part of the job is getting to know the couples, their friends and family, and sharing in one of the most important days of their lives, which is something he will miss.

If there one aspect of the job he won’t mind saying goodbye to, it’s the considerable amount of time spent on paperwork that the role requires.

“There’s certainly a lot of paperwork, I’m not going to miss that,” he said. “There’s also a lot of travel involved.”

a run-in with the law, I started wondering. What am I doing? Why am I drawn to what I know is clearly wrong?

Why don’t I just stop? Couples split up because of infidelity and cars crashed leaving friends damaged and dead.

Obviously, choices had consequences. I was scared. Where was my life headed? There was sadness in my family’s eyes when they saw me. I felt ashamed and turned away. What was wrong with me? Why would I hurt those I loved? Was this really what I wanted in life? Questions piled up like thick storm clouds. But in the darkness, light came.

In his Confessions, Saint Augustine states: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

Because God designed us for Himself, our hearts crave meaning, thirst for authentic relationship, and longing to love and be loved in return. C.S. Lewis once noted that all our vices are virtues gone wrong. Behind everything I did, all my poor decisions and the pain I caused, a search was underway. I was looking for God, but in all the wrong places. Then, just like the dawn, His light broke through. How about you? Have you found what you’re looking for? Keep asking those questions. In the darkness, light comes.

As a case in point of the travel involved, today (Friday, September 26th) will likely be Mr. Stuart-Hill’s last day as a marriage commissioner, and he will start it by performing a wedding in Panorama, followed by a drive down to Lake Lillian for a second wedding and continuing on to Copper Point Resort to do a third, before heading out to Nipika for a fourth. He will then drive back to the reception of the first wedding at Panorama.

Mr. Stuart-Hill, along with his wife Kelly, is originally from South Africa (they moved to Invermere in 1967). He will have plenty to keep him busy once his marriage commissioner days are done. Having travelled to 132 countries and becoming fascinated with the world’s deserts (he’s been to all but two of the planet’s major deserts — the Gobi in Mongolia, and another desert in Kazakhstan) he still has some destinations to visit. He’s also still actively involved in many local organizations in the valley (particularly the Rotary club) and, as if that’s not enough, he’s begun writing a second book about his life experiences.

No litter left behind in Shoreline Cleanup Watershed Wanderings

By Megan Peloso Pioneer Columnist On Saturday, September 20th, a group of dedicated local residents set out on a mission to scour the water’s edge at Kinsmen Beach and James Chabot Provincial Park for litter of all shapes and sizes.

Due to their proximity to flowing waterways, shorelines are particularly vulnerable to harmful effects of litter, which can alter sensitive ecosystem functions and critical habitat for both land-based and aquatic wildlife.

Protecting, restoring and enhancing the quality of the shoreline to improve ecosystem functioning is an important objective set out in the Lake Windermere Management Plan. Lake Windermere is also a source for drinking water, and what goes into the lake has direct implications for human health and safety.

The cleanup was organized by Lake Windermere Ambassadors as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF (World Wildlife Fund), and the largest direct action conservation program in Canada. Tens of thousands of Canadians band together every September to fight shoreline litter by recording what types of litter are found and taking informed action to prevent pollution at its source.

Most of the litter items found each year fall into the category of recreational ac-

tivities, created by outdoor events like picnics and festivals where things like food wrappers, plastic bags and beverage containers are left behind, forgotten or blown away in the wind. For information on shoreline cleanups happening across Canada, check out www.

In a single morning, thanks to an awesome crew, our local shorelines were relieved of many harmful litter items, such as small stray pieces of glass, over 50 cans, and more than 400 cigarette butts! Volunteers also found some unusual items like metal pipe, nail clippers, a glittery hat, and fishing line.

A big thank you goes out to Tim Hortons in Invermere for their generous donation of delicious sandwiches and Timbits to reward and re-fuel our fantastic team!
