Farmers’ market stays By Pioneer Staff The Invermere Farmers’ Market will stay at its traditional location this summer, with one exception: rather than spill over into Cenotaph Park, it will extend along 6th Avenue behind Gerry’s Gelati. Town council agreed that would allow more room for the vendors who need to use their vehicles. It

would also allow free up access to local businesses who find themselves hemmed in by the increasinglypopular market. Several other locations were discussed and rejected. It was felt that the visibility of the present location draws drop-in downtown visitors. “Everybody loves the Farmers’ Market,” said councillor Bob Campsall.

Youths charged Three youths have been charged with break-and-enter after an ongoing investigation into a rash of downtown business thefts. On the afternoon of Saturday, March 12, Columbia Valley detachment received a report of a break and enter and theft of pop from the cooler at Gerry’s Gelati. Earlier that day, an RCMP officer had spoken to a female with a backpack full of these items. After receiving the report, the officer went

to the female’s home and arrested and charged her with break and enter and theft. In connection with the same crimes, later that same afternoon, an RCMP officer on foot patrol observed two youths spray painting profanities and other graffiti on the exterior of an Invermere financial office. The two youths were arrested, charged and released to their parents. More charges are pending, said RCMP Corp. Dale Morgan.

for town study

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff No major new developments will begin in Invermere until a planning study is finished in August. And the three developers who want to launch their new projects have agreed to pay for the study. Rather than having the developers go at it piecemeal, the town is asking the three developers to give up about one-quarter million dollars in total and will hire its own engineers to perform the study. The developers – Octagon, which wants to develop the downtown core; Grizzly Ridge, which wants to develop the large tract of land south and east of the town; and Lakeview Pointe, which wants to develop condos in Athalmer – are expressing some urgency about getting started.

But chief executive officer Patrick Robins said the study likely won’t be complete until August. “Checking out the water and sewer is the easy part,” he said. “But we want some very specific information about traffic flow and that will require that a traffic count be done during the busiest part of the summer.” None of the developers have made any official application for permits yet. But Mr. Robins said it would be pointless to discuss any project until the town has a clear picture of how the town will be impacted. He said the town’s engineering company, Urban Systems, will perform the study. “This is a giant step forward that will give the public some measure of comfort when considering all the new development,” said mayor Mark Shmigelsky.

Battling with the beetles What Are They?

• Tiny bugs, less than one centimetre long. • Life cycle of one year. • Native to Alberta and B.C., stretching down western North America as far as Mexico.

The Problem:

Forester Greg DuBois of Invermere points to a vertical tunnel under the bark where the beetles have laid their eggs. When hatched, the new beetles will tunnel their way horizontally around this lodgepole pine and kill it. By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff The pine beetle is here to stay. Commercial foresters can’t do anything now but try to control the spread of the insect by removing infested trees. And that process is both costly and time-consuming. B.C. premier Gordon Campbell and Alberta premier Ralph Klein signed an agreement last week in Cranbrook to spend $1.6 million in the first year on beetle control. B.C. will put in $900,000 and Alberta $742,000. The two provinces are hoping their cooperation will spur the federal government to join the fight against the pest. “We’ve been dealing with a significant increase in pine beetles for several years,” said Steve Ostrander, Woodlands Manager for Canadian Forest

Products in Radium. He said the company has been putting most of its planning resources into containing the spread of the beetle. First an aerial survey is done via helicopter, to identify the trees that have turned red. Those are the trees that have been killed by the beetle. Next a ground crew goes in to determine how many trees in the area have been infested. Finally, the logging crew goes in either to remove the infested trees or to harvest a small patch around the infested trees in an attempt to prevent the spread. The aim is to prevent widespread clear-cutting. “We don’t want to overcut,” Mr. Ostrander said. Provincial assistance has been available to help the company, and it is hoped the funding will continue. Canfor joined forces with Tembec, the other major forestry products employer in the area, to review the beetle

• Pine beetles kill lodgepole pines by tunnelling their way around the trunk, girdling the tree. • Mild winters are helping the beetles proliferate. The insect is very cold-resistant. Temperatures of -30 are required for a period of 3 weeks before they are wiped out. • They spread faster among trees growing on warmer slopes facing south and west. • They attack older trees.Young trees can protect themselves by drowning the beetle with sap.

situation here last winter. “If we can continue to log beetleinfested areas only, then we can keep one step ahead of them without having to overcut,” Mr. Ostrander said. Fortunately the Columbia Valley hasn’t been hit as hard as the northern forests around Prince George, which have hundreds of square miles of lodgepole pines. Mr. Ostrander estimates about 40 percent of the local forest is lodgepole pine. Meanwhile Kootenay National Park is doing little to stop the spread of the pine beetle. “Our policy is to let them run their course,” said fire specialist Grant Peregoodoff. He said the beetle, which was first recorded in 1930, is accomplishing what forest fires did in the past - removing older trees so that new trees and other vegetation can grow. However, he said he understands the position of commercial foresters.

“We want to be good neighbors,” he said. Recognizing that the park is located close to the forests used for logging, the parks staff do carry out some prescribed burns to stop the beetle from spreading. “The forest fire in 2003 in Kootenay Park created an area that beetles can’t cross,” he said. Local independent forester Greg DuBois of Invermere said it’s been disheartening to watch the beetle spread. “Five years ago I thought we could actually control them,” he said. “Now there are so many around all we can do is minimize the damage.” Mr. DuBois said there is federal grant money available for private owners concerned about the health of their woods. He has already assessed two valley properties owned privately, and can assist owners with information and support if they call him at 342-3029.

Clothes, food for Romanian kids By Dorothy Isted Special to The Pioneer Neither my husband Colin nor I ever dreamed of the turn of events that would take place as a result of our visit to Romania last September. Let me now say thanks to the people of this community, who raised $9,235 last year for the village where Robert is our World Vision sponsored child. In a few months we will receive a report outlining how the rest of these funds were disbursed. I was told that the first priority for the extra funds would be to buy cough syrup and flu medicines for the children. Otherwise, when winter came, they would have none of these comforts. It’s hard to believe people in Europe could be that poor. The average wage in Romania is about $120 per month, and yet the cost of living is comparable to Canada. Colin was suprised by the big deal made about our visit. We had been given a tour of the medical clinic, met a town councillor and had lunch with the teachers at the bigger school. Now here we were ensconced on little kid-sized chairs smiling at the four to 10-year-olds who were singing their little hearts out for us in words beyond our comprehension. I had been sitting in the lace-curtained classroom trying to understand the poverty. None of the children were obese but they didn’t look poor. One little girl had patches in her jeans knees and all were clean and tidy.

I asked the worker about this later and she informed me that sponsor money had purchased the clothing, along with the food baskets they get in the winter. Otherwise, they would indeed go hungry. Robert remained as the class was dismissed and was joined by his younger brother George and their mother. We presented the gifts we had brought: the small toys for the boys, the quilt, hats, and mitts made by my friends. George smiled and responded but Robert was serious and shy, refusing us more than a glance. Their mother expressed her thanks. The teachers were happy with the gifts of pencils, toys, scribblers, scissors etc. The next day on the train leaving Romania, it was my turn for a surprise. Colin decided he wanted to go back and help rebuild this country. Now, six months later, he has made plans to join a team of Canadians for three weeks in May, to build low-cost housing there: small, two-bedroom homes of 555 square feet and a cost of $10,000 each. Because of the generosity already shown by our valley, dare I ask if anyone out there would like to help with the cost of a small home in another area of this poor country? The needed funds for Colin’s planned venture with Hands for Humanity have still not been raised. We would be delighted to speak to anyone wanting to know more about this and can be reached at 342-3826.

World Vision foster children Robert and his little brother George were warm this winter, thanks to the clothing that was purchased with funds raised here in the valley.
