Ultimately, Mr. Nickurak said the town may never have to meet the new standards if it can convert the entire town from surface water to well water. Surface water carries germs that can contaminate drinking water. Mr. Nickurak assured council that our drinking water supply is perfectly safe and an alarm system is in place which will alert municipal staff if the chlorination system breaks down. After the meeting, Mr. Nickurak told The Pioneer that there is no danger to the water from cattle roaming in the area, since a trenching system keeps animal effluent away from Paddy Ryan Lakes. The contaminated water from the surrounding trenches is then directed through a culvert and discharged into Abel Creek, he said. He said if water isn’t found in Athalmer, other options must be considered - for example, drilling at other locations outside town limits. He said test holes have already been drilled near Wilmer. Water can be drawn from Lake Windermere, but because the lake water sees heavy usage by motorized boats it would require a major water treatment system to disinfect the water. Finally, even if new wells are found in Athalmer, he said it will be costly to pump the water against gravity up into the town and as far as Pineridge and the new CastleRock development. As long as our water flows downhill, gravity in on our side. Results from the well drilling tests in Athalmer are expected in two to four weeks.

Parents fear deer threat, says mayor

By Pioneer Staff Invermere’s town council will ask the local conservation officer to attend a meeting and discuss the growing deer problem. “I’ve had quite a few calls from parents who are concerned about the risk they are presenting to smaller children,” said Mayor Mark Shmigelsky. He said he has heard that in Banff, dogs have been trained to chase away the elk. “Maybe we should think about it,” he said jokingly. Other councillors said they have also had calls. Councillor JoAnne Willox said the complaints were major. “I’ve had reports that kids are being threatened,” she said. Councillor Willox said she believes there are more deer in town and they seem to be getting braver. “When you step out your back door and try to chase them away, they just stand there.” Councillor Brian McLaughlin said he had seen children on their way to Eileen Madson who were almost bowled over by deer running across the street. Mayor Shmigelsky pointed out that the town of Princeton has just passed a bylaw prohibiting people in town from feeding deer and that might be something Invermere should consider. He said he would like public input on the issue, whether people are resigned to having the deer around or whether they actually welcome the deer population as a part of our community. The conservation officer said earlier that the number of deer hasn’t increased, but they are being attracted into town by the new lawns and gardens created as a result of additional development. He said his department frowns on people who are feeding the deer, since that does not help them to become self-reliant.

Not any more. Ethics is winning that hand. Are there more specialists working out of Cranbrook hospital now than there were under the other party? You bet there is. Do we have more action happening for education? Again, yes! College of the Rockies is getting new status and areas of education thanks to planning and making better use of monies available. Look at the new programs that train for high-paying jobs right here in our valley. We have nursing courses available in Invermere and we have a building trades program right here as well. Our kids and young adults can learn, train and live right here at home while getting an excellent education and eventually well paying jobs. Are these positives? You bet! What is the negative alternative? Carole James and the NDP have promised to turn back the clock four years. Why would anyone propose that, never mind vote for it?
I have noticed a very distinct difference between the two major candidates in the coming provincial election in regards to their writings in the Valley Echo. The NDP candidate is extremely negative and finding fault with everything and everybody. Our present MLA, Wendy McMahon, seems to have a vision for our valley, for people’s betterment and a plan for the future. Personally I prefer people and governments that have a more positive forward-looking attitude. It is so much more invigorating both for individuals in the area and for valley society in general, to have this attitude. I have noticed that the Golden candidate has forgotten how his party put this province in the poor house in that we became one of the have not provinces of Canada. Now our province is on a major recovery. We have a much more positive attitude in both industry and business such that people are reinvesting in both the Columbia Valley and the province in general. So many more people are employed and active. With the previous government, people and businesses were leaving in L.F. Harmsworth, droves. Big deal, right? You bet! Now Invermere

Girls’ hockey explodes By Michelle Taylor Pioneer Staff The Invermere Junior Devils Hockey League partnered up this past weekend with an initiative called the Spirit of 2010 to promote girls’ participation at their annual hockey jamboree. According to Hockey Canada, “there has been more than a 400% increase in participation in ten years. Female hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.” As far as local involvement, the East Kootenay Region had one team of approximately ten girls a decade ago. “Today we have recruited over 50 girls to the game,” said one of the coaches, Grant McDonald. Fifty East Kootenay girls ranging in age from eight to 12 participated in the jamboree. The Spirit of 2010 will spend the next five years encouraging
participation of youth in sport and to promote the next generation of Olympians. By the end of spring more than 30,000 boys and girls from across the province will participate in a series of hockey events. One of the goals is to be the healthiest province in Canada by the time the Olympics arrive. To keep with the spirit of this event, the event was held at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena on Saturday and started with a ceremonial puck drop with MLA Wendy McMahon and town councillor Bob Campsall. “Active kids are healthy kids,” Wendy MacMahon said. “I get excited to see kids so enthusiastic about sport.” Coaches and organizers of the event included Grant McDonald, Kerry Ellingboe, Kerry Colonna, Jim Jones, John McCarthy and Kim Westergaard. Activities included basic skill development from coaches
throughout the day, team games, and a skills competition with skating, showdown and shooting drills. “The objective of the day is to promote hockey for girls and to have fun participation,” said Grant McDonald. “We grouped girls together from different geographical locations to really mix it up. That way the girls get to meet new people and form new friendships,” said coach Kerry Ellingboe. Kassie Colonna, who attends J.A. Laird and is known for skating fast, said: “I like the jamboree because there are a whole bunch of teams with girls from all different places. I like meeting new players and making new friends. Playing sports is a lot more fun than just sitting on the side.” At the end of the day the girls all received a tank top, a Spirit of 2010 commemorative puck, and formed new friendships.

In my time, I’ve set my legs under many dining tables, including those holding up feasts from the kitchens of grandmothers, country chefs and cosmopolitan gourmets. Well, when Joan decides to throw it all together for two or even forty appetites, whoever is on the guest list is in for a fine treat. Her only failure is the garlic toast! Overly grilled, that delicious baking is hardly ever served - no one likes black garlic toast! In October 1987, my score card on Joan started to fill up with A’s. She was a good driver, an attentive listener, dressed fashionably and as I explained herein, could dance, cook and spill things with panache. She had a lot of class - the kind I am attracted to and everyone we met liked her. So, the final rounds in the main event became shorter until on the 22nd, my 66th birthday, we decided to get real serious and marry for keeps. She wouldn’t listen when I mentioned that she was too young for me or that I was too old for her. We sort of narrowed the gap by cutting back on some things and doubling up on others. Well, after I had open heart surgery in December of that year we made a deal. Soon as I could stand up for a full 20 minutes in February 1988, the deed would be done. On the seventh I stepped up from cloud nine onto the highest one around and never looked back again at those pre-Joan dreary times. All of the timeless love songs, ballads and romantic verses seem a part of our vows. We still roll along in sickness and in health, having a breezy time as mates, friends and lovers - just the two of us.
