Hardy weeds are already poking their heads through the thin crust of ice.
Weed growth spreading By Michelle Taylor Pioneer Staff Weed growth is increasing in Lake Windermere, according to local observers. “Without question there is a noticeable difference in weed growth in the lake,” said Tim Strand, who lives on Tunnacliffe Heights overlooking the lake. “Five years ago you could take your boat up the river - now you have to stop every few minutes to take the weeds off the propeller.” Because the lake is so shallow, allowing sunlight to penetrate the water all the way to the bottom, it has always had a lot of weed growth. Most lakes in the province have around 20 species of plants but our lake has more than 40 species, according to Bob Nijman, an aquatic plant specialist with the province’s Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection. Fortunately the weeds don’t impact recreation uses like swimming as much as they could, said Mr. Nijman. “It is pretty fortunate that many of the plants haven’t come to the surface, even though the lake is so shallow.” Some years the lake appears to have fewer weeds but it could just be a matter of flow. “I have seen weeds two meters long that are flat on the bottom because the current is so strong,” said Mr. Nijman. He said it’s common for lakes, especially Lake Windermere, to have excessive weed growth from year to year for various reasons, including low water, warmer weather conditions or
a surplus of nutrients flowing into the lake water. “Sewage that is going into the lake provides nutrients that stimulate plant growth,” said Mr. Nijman. Some of the causes for the additional sewage are leaking or overflowing septic tanks, or tanks too close to the shore. Mr. Nijman recommends that tanks be pumped out annually. Development on the east side of the lake within the Regional District of East Kootenay is serviced almost exclusively by septic systems. According to the Lake Windermere Management Strategy prepared by the District of Inveremere in 2001, there are “hot spots” along the shore lines containing high amounts of nutrients entering the lake. The study reported that “septic fields along the east side of the lake suggest that the intensive use of septic fields for household wastewater treatment and disposal may be causing the nearshore water quality problems.” Treated sewage is also entering Toby Creek from Panorama Mountain Resort, and occasionally from Invermere when the sewage treatment plant can’t accommodate the volume and some of it is purposely discharged into the creek after it is treated. Toby Creek flows down the mountains from the direction of Panorama and enters the Columbia River about one kilometre north of Athalmer. During the spring melt, the creek flows so rapidly that the river can’t accommodate the extra water and it backs up towards the lake. The river pushes silt all the way
A blanket of surface weeds covers an area just off Tunnacliffe Heights. south into the lake and turns the water a muddy olive colour. A resident here since 1927, John Ronacher Senior has also noticed some changes in the lake over the years. “It used to take a good week before the lake would get backed up from Toby Creek,” said Mr. Ronacher. “Now it only takes one or two days.” The good news is that Lake Windermere does not have the dreaded Eurasian Water Milfoil, although it could be coming our way. This particular species of weed can take over a lake very quickly. Towns in the Okanagan and Shuswap have spent a lot of money trying to eradicate the pesky weed from their lakes. However, by the time the weed was discovered, it was too late. The provincial government tried for years to prevent the spread of weeds among lakes, including posting signs at launch areas asking owners to clean their boats and putting road checks in
place to check boats for weeds. When it was finally realized that it would be impossible to stop the spread of certain plant species, the government stopped all efforts. People have complained about the weeds in Lake Windermere since the 1970s, according to Mr. Nijman. He surveyed the weed growth here in 1989 and again a few years later, but found there were no unusual or threatening causes for excessive weed growth. The government no longer funds any surveys. Mr. Nijman also warned that people are not allowed to remove weeds unless they get provincial government approval, because the area below high water is government property. “When people buy lakeshore property the first thing they do is remove all the bullrushes,” he said. However, vegetation at the water’s edge helps to filter waste from entering the lake and also prevents erosion.

Picture, poetry and piano
By Ken Mallett Columbia Valley Arts Council
This is a stroke of luck for the valley! A triple performance billed as “Saarinen and Sinclair: North America in Picture, Poetry and Piano” will be held on Tuesday, March 15th, 7:30 p.m. at Christ Church Trinity, Invermere. Three distinguished Canadians
have allowed their creative minds to wander the length and breadth, the height and depth of some amazing North American trails to produce a series of 17 North American vignettes, each a trilogy of visual, spoken and musical images. The performance will include projected images of original art by one of Canada’s most beloved artists, Ted Harrison. His love of the land and the

people of the Yukon and his colorful and distinctive painting style has brought him national acclaim. Ted Harrison’s work can be found in numerous private and public collections throughout Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Germany and Japan. In 1987 he received the Order of Canada for his contribution to the Canadian culture, and has received an honorary doctorate among many other honours. This concert will also feature poetry written by an icon of Canadian broadcasting: broadcaster and author Lister Sinclair, long-time host of CBC Radio’s “Ideas”. Finally, classical and contemporary music will be performed by internationally-acclaimed pianist Gloria Saarinen. During her illustrious career, she performed in 38 countries on many of the world’s greatest stages. The interplay of visual images and poetry specifically written for this 40city project, paired with classical repertoire by some of the world’s greatest composers, brings a new dimension to the concert stage and to the enjoyment
of classical music, poetry, and art. This project includes the publication of a book of the art and poetry, as well as an accompanying CD of the spoken word and the music. Following are some reviews: About Lister Sinclair: “Lister is the only man I know who has aged backwards.” Pierre Berton, author and life-long friend. “He has touched infinitely the lives of audiences in Canada for so many decades.” Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada. About Gloria Saarinen: “Warm, lyrical, imaginative.” London Times, U.K. “An outstanding performer - truly inspired.” Arthur Fiedler, Boston Pops Orchestra. About the concert: “I have not been much of a fan of classical music until seeing this performance. I was expecting poetry above me and inaccessible artwork, but Lister made the visual of the artwork come to life like a movie.” Performance Touring Network, Manitoba.

Criminals and cranks plague RCMP Mean-spirited thieves target local thrift shop
Screamer haunts golf course
After being vandalized dozens of times, the local Thrift Store was finally broken into last week and cash stolen. Traditionally the thieves root around in the donated items left behind the store and help themselves, usually making a mess in the process. This time the offenders became a little braver. They used a crowbar to try to pry open the back door, damaging the door in the process, before they gave up and smashed the rear window instead. After gaining access to the building, they stole several hundred dollars in cash. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce reflected “Thankfully all they wanted was the money. in the window of Copper City broken by a thrown rock They didn’t vandalize anything inside the building,” on Monday evening. said volunteer coordinator Marjorie Wright. She said some 80 volunteers are growing weary of cleaning up after vandals. Mrs. Wright said the Rock hurled through window rear window will now have security bars installed by rejected tavern patron behind the glass, and from now on there will be no cash on the premises. After being ejected for drunken behavior late Monday evening, an irate patron threw a large rock through the window at Copper City Saloon. A Radium resident called to report hearing a male’s “blood-curdling scream” near the ninth hole of a Radium golf course. The complainant called from home to report the disturbance. She said the noise had not been repeated, but that she had seen a male walking in the trees on the course earlier. Patrols were made of the area, but nothing suspicious was observed.
Drunk driver caught speeding An RCMP officer, driving south on Highway 93/95 on the evening of Feb. 19, observed a vehicle traveling north on the same highway at 115 km per hour, well above the posted 90 km speed limit. The offending vehicle was pulled over and the officer noted that the driver showed signs of impairment. The driver refused to provide a breath sample. The driver’s vehicle was towed, and a driving suspension was issued. The driver is charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample.
Possible bike thief spotted On the afternoon of February 25 an Invermere resident reported that his son had seen a male teen riding a blue and white Kona hard tail mountain bike that looked exactly like the bike his friend had had stolen the previous day. The rider was a white male, about 15 years old, wearing a white baseball cap. Anyone seeing this bike, or recognizing the rider, is asked to call the RCMP at 342-9292.
Teens resist man’s invitation On the morning of February 24, police received a report of three teens being approached in Edgewater the previous evening by an adult male who asked if the teens wanted to do homework in his basement. The teens threw a pop can at the adult, and ran from the scene and told their parents. The male has not been identified.

SPORTS
The Old Zone
By Harold Hazelaar and Brent Raven
For someone who loves to play hockey in a friendly, non- physical environment, waiting to reach the ripe old age of thirty-five is almost as eagerly anticipated as when we reach our sixteenth birthday. A “coming of age,” so to speak, for a true highlight of adulthood. Even reaching this age does not guarantee admittance into our ranks. As far as Old-Timers’ hockey is concerned, the Columbia Valley is extremely fortunate to have as many “almost seniors” playing at the talent level seen at our games. For a community this size to have eight teams and a waiting list of newcomers each year is a testament to the love of this game that we all have.
For the few rookies that do gain entry each season, the level of play surprises them. These young kids have no respect for we seasoned veterans! They haven’t figured out that as we get older, we become more determined each year to play the way we did when we were the rookies. The veterans of this league are responsible for teaching the rookies that Old-Timers’ hockey is first and foremost intended to be fun. When it comes to playoffs it may become a wee bit competitive, but mainly it is a fun night out with the guys. We are proud to play in a league where the guys who are approaching the tender age of 70 still feel welcome and have the desire to play amongst others who could very well be their children.
Who ever said, “some people never grow up” must have been referring to adults who continue to play the games of their youth. “Hurry up and drop the puck!” WHO AM I ?????#3 This outstanding center and 16year veteran has won the big show three times. He had to pay a whopping $45 after the Christmas weigh-in last year due to illness. His trademark moustache and soft hands around the net help him pave the way for many a goal. WHO AM I? E-mail your guess to hhazelaar@kijhl.com and include your name and phone number. A random draw from the correct answers will determine the winner of a free medium pizza from our sponsor, Peppi’s Pizza. All entries must be in no later than Thursday, March 10th at 6 p.m.

Canal Flats Atoms bring home banner Canal Flats Atoms brought home the first-ever “A” banner to their community. The Canal Flats team attended the league playoffs last weekend. They were seated fourth out of seven teams in the league (Creston, Golden, Fernie, Canal Flats, Elkford, Fernie, and Sparwood). The team went into the tournament after a strong regular season playing league and exhibition games, losing only one exhibition game, and having a 10 and 4 league record. After beating the number
one seated team, Creston, on Friday afternoon they played Saturday morning against Fernie (the team they lost to both times in the regular season) and beat them. The team then played Elkford, rallying back from a 4-todeficit to tie the game up in the middle of the third period with a final outcome of 4 ~ 4. In the fourth game they had a very strong showing against Sparwood, winning that game which put them in the final. Meeting Elkford in the final games, the team knew it had its work cut
out for it and resolved that they would play shift by shift, period by period, and work for the win. With the kids’ families looking on, they did just that. They picked up their first goal in the first period and never looked back, with a final score of 10 2. Remember that in a small community it is hard to get enough players to make a team. This year there were 14 Atom players in total, including two seven-year-olds, as well as one player who just started this year.
