A grizzly bear will not be destroyed by conservation officers, even though it attacked and mauled a forestry worker near Canal Flats.

The man suffered bites and gashes in his leg and right arm, but escaped more serious injuries after his female co-worker drove the bear off with a can of bear spray.

The incident occurred at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4th about 50 kilometres east of Canal Flats.

The pair was working near Akinkoom Creek when the woman spotted the grizzly first.

She yelled to warn the man, who started to run towards her. But the bear saw him and immediately attacked, grabbing the man’s arm in its jaws.

The man rolled underneath a dead tree for safety, but the grizzly tried to pull him out by sinking his teeth into the man’s thigh. The victim managed to kick the bear in the nose with his caulked boots.

The bear then turned and headed towards the woman, who discharged her can of bear spray.

“The bear took a face full of it and that discouraged any further attack,” said Arnold deBoon, acting senior conservation officer for Cranbrook.

The woman dragged the bleeding man to a safer place near a main road about 300 metres away and then was forced to leave him unattended, armed only with a can of bear spray, while she raced for help. Other workers from the same crew were a few kilometres

away. Three of them went back, armed with bear spray, to provide first aid and evacuate the injured worker.

The man was first taken by helicopter to Invermere District Hospital and then flown to Cranbrook hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Both workers have declined interviews and have asked their names not be released.

The fate of the bear was determined the following day, when conservation officers decided not to destroy the bear because they believe it will not pose further risk to humans.

“This was a lone grizzly and it may have been surprised by the workers,” Mr. deBoon said.

He said the man took defensive action and was not seriously injured by the attack.

“If a grizzly intends to kill a person, it is fully capable of doing more damage than it did,” he added.

Mr. deBoon said that they are hoping that the hard kick in the nose and a face full of pepper spray will educate the bear and discourage it from interacting with humans.

He is urging the public to stay away from the area of the attack to allow the large, blonde-coloured bear to disperse. Most of all, he is advising the public to be bear aware.

“We are in bear country and these things can happen at a moment’s notice,” he added.

The two workers are employed by Maple Leaf Forestry Consulting Ltd. in Cranbrook, and they were performing contract work for Tembec when the incident occurred.

Fairmont baby fighting for her life

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Daphne and Al Neal of Fairmont Hot Springs are facing the most difficult challenge of their lives.

Their one-year-old baby girl is suffering from malignant cancer and her right leg must be amputated to give her a chance at life.

The Saturday of the May long weekend started out as a routine day for the Neal family.

They were giving 11-month-old Keira a bath when they noticed a swollen area above her knee.

“We thought we had a speed-skater on our hands because her quad was so big,” Daphne said. “We looked at the other leg, and we knew right away something wasn’t right.”

Daphne and Al immediately took Keira to the emergency room at Invermere District Hospital, where they were advised to wait a couple of days to see if the swelling would go down.

When it didn’t, their family doctor Maria Dibb ordered an ultrasound.

The word came back that Keira needed still more tests.

“Obviously we were pretty shocked to know it was more serious than we thought,” Daphne said.

“At this time there was never a confirmation that it was cancer.”

The couple, along with Keira and their three-year old son Ryan, arrived at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary on May 30th.

After the additional tests were done, all the family could do was wait.

“There wasn’t a day when it was like ‘hello, you have cancer,’” Daphne said. “But there were lots of little indications.”

On June 6th, Keira’s first birthday, she had an open biopsy to confirm her doctor’s suspicions of cancer.

“It was a major surgery,” Daphne said.

“We don’t think of it as taking a limb. We believe we are giving her a chance at life.”

- Daphne Neal, Keira’s mother Doctors made a five-centimetre incision and took out five cubes of flesh.

Within 30 minutes, Al and Daphne’s worst fear was confirmed. Keira had cancer.

“The initial pathology was that it was very treatable and very sensitive to chemo,” Daphne said. “At that point we were thinking we had the best of a bad situation.”

Their hopes were quickly dashed two days later when they received the final diagnosis.

Keira has Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that is extremely rare in babies and very resistant to chemotherapy. It has a survival rate of 30 percent and a high chance of recurrence to the local area - in this case, her leg.

“It was a bit of a blow to us that day,” Daphne said.

But they did receive some good news.

Fortunately, there was no cancer found in any other part of her body.

After the diagnosis, Daphne and Al went straight to work.

“We were like ‘OK, well, she has this, but what are we going to do now?’” Daphne said.

They spent countless hours going through scientific journals trying to gather information about the disease.

Then they made their decision.

They were going to have to amputate Keira’s leg.

“We don’t think of it as we are taking a limb, we believe we are giving her a chance to live,” Daphne said.

Keira immediately began her first round of chemotherapy treatment, which will last for 12 weeks.

Then Keira’s surgery is scheduled for September 5th.

After Keira’s surgery, the family will remain in Calgary to undergo 30 weeks of additional chemotherapy.

Fortunately, a friend has found them a house for the duration.

Daphne will not return to work as a teacher in the fall. Al, who is self-employed as an environmental consultant, will try to keep working during Keira’s treatment.

Daphne said they are trying to remain positive.

“There are times when you break down and you lose it,” Daphne said. “But my husband and I have a very strong relationship and we are going to be strong for Keira.”

She also said that Keira’s big brother Ryan is helping make the experience better for his sister.

Columbia Valley Detachment responded to 96 incidents from July 4 to July 9, 2007. Some of the more notable events were as follows: • July 4: At 10:41 a.m., RCMP received a report of an accident on Westside Road. Police attended approximately two kilometres south of Ruault Road on Westside Road and located a vehicle rolled over in the ditch. The driver was not injured. The crash occurred as the driver was adjusting the CD in his vehicle and when he looked up he noticed he was travelling on the right shoulder. When he tried to correct, he mistakenly “over-steered,” crossing into the oncoming lane, fishtailing into the right side again, where he drove into the right ditch, coming to a rest after rolling over.

RCMP would like to remind motorists that although common practice, changing CDs, radio stations and cell phone use by drivers of moving vehicles can and sometimes do have adverse consequences.

Even if no charges are laid, driver inattentiveness can create concerns with respect to insurance claims. Drivers are urged to pull their vehicles over to the right side of the road, make whatever adjustments or phone calls they need - then feel free to drive safe and secure.

Imagine an airplane pilot making a cell phone call at take-off - I know they have as much or more experience flying as some drivers do driving - but it would still make me wish I’d taken the bus.

• July 4: At 2:30 p.m., RCMP responded to a report of a domestic assault and that the offender had left the house. During their investigation at the scene, the suspect returned and was arrested by police. The suspect was later released from custody on strict “no contact” conditions. The alleged offender is due to ap-

As for the future, Daphne does not know what it holds for her family - but she does know that her daughter is tough.

“She started walking before she was 10 months old, she falls down on her head and is right back up,” Daphne said. “This is another fall she is going to have, but she is going to get right back up.”

• July 4: At 9:15 p.m., RCMP were called to Kinsmen Beach in Invermere, because there were people doing drugs and drinking beer and being loud and obnoxious. Police observed about 15 empty bottles of alcohol lying on the lawn next to a group of people, who denied they were responsible. There was also an open bag with six full cans of beer in it. The owner was directed to destroy them by pouring them out.

No charges could be laid as there was no direct evidence any of the people were actually consuming beer in public. The group did pick up the empty bottles and put them in the garbage. Police then observed another male had an open beer nearby. He was issued a provincial violation ticket.

• July 7: At 3:19 a.m., RCMP were called to a complaint of a break, enter and assault in Edgewater.

Upon arrival, police were advised that a man known to the residents attended their house around 3 a.m., and entered uninvited, assaulted another male, threw property around the residence, and left. The complainant also reported that within the past two weeks, the same suspect grabbed her and pinned her against a wall. There was also another incident where he pinned her arms and removed some clothing. The suspect was located the following day by RCMP and arrested. He was held in custody and taken to Cranbrook to appear in court for a bail hearing.

Over the weekend, RCMP were called to downtown Invermere a few times to deal with intoxicated people wandering around, causing fights inside and outside local bars. Police are examining options under the Criminal Code and the B.C. Liquor Control & Licencing Act to determine the most effective method of curbing unruly behaviour in future cases. whelming support they are receiving from the valley.

The event will be held on Friday, July 20th at 9 p.m. with a silent auction and will continue Saturday, July 21st at 2 p.m. with golf and a parade at 5 p.m. A dance will be held both nights. Wheels are in motion for Columbia Valley bus route

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff A public transit bus could be rolling up and down the Columbia Valley by Groundhog Day, pending the public’s favor of a plan approved by the regional district board of directors last Friday.

The plan is the culmination of a fiveyear push for a public transit system in the Columbia Valley that began with a 2002 feasibility study conducted by BC Transit and comes to fruition with the release of $32 million in investment in new buses and transit service improvements by the Ministry of Transportation this year.

Regional District Deputy Manager of Administration Shannon Moskal said the rubber is about to meet the road.

According to the plan, taxpayers in Areas F and G, as well as the municipalities of Canal Flats, Invermere and Radium Hot Springs will be asked to share in the cost of the service.

The most it will cost local taxpayers is $75,000, Ms. Moskal estimated, for the first year of service, but the cost will come down as ridership increases. BC Transit has budgeted for 12,000 riders the first year.

A referendum or alternative approv-

al process will be arranged in Areas F and G, Ms. Moskal explained, and municipalities will conduct their own polls to gauge public approval of the plan.

If the plan succeeds, a rider in Canal Flats will be able to board a bus at 10:35 in the morning and arrive in Invermere by 11:25 on a $2.50 fare ($2 for students and seniors). The same rider, the plan says, will be able to board a second bus at 4:05 in the afternoon in Invermere and will be back in Canal Flats in time for dinner.

Weekly and monthly ride cards will be available and a second, three-times-aweek, mid-day route between Radium, Invermere and Fairmont is also being planned.

Although Ms. Moskal was quick to point out that no operator has been chosen yet to provide the service, the plan recommends Olympus Stagelines of Golden, the current operator of Interior Health’s Health Connections bus which ferries riders back and forth between the Golden, Invermere and Cranbrook hospitals for medical appointments.

The plan now proceeds to the municipalities for approval, Ms. Moskal said. A public education campaign will follow and the elector assent process will begin this fall.

Help, help, help wanted

Readers will notice the record number of Help Wanted advertisements in the paper this week, a clear indication of the extraordinary labour shortage here.

And the word on the street is that it’s only going to get worse.

Not only are local employers struggling to find staff, they’re desperately trying to hang on to the people they have. We continually hear stories about some people quitting without giving any notice, which is really unprofessional. Apparently they feel it is no longer necessary to have a good reference any more.

Small businesses are especially hard hit. For example, a store that loses one of its five employees is effectively losing 20 percent of its staff at once. That puts a burden not only on the owner but on the remaining staff. And small businesses that operate with a lower profit margin are less able to compete by jacking up their salaries and benefits without bringing the business perilously close to bankruptcy.

The traditional response is that the owner himself works longer hours to take up the slack, and that results in more stress and burnout.

A more acceptable alternative is to bring in workers from outside Canada, and that’s a concept we are hearing more about as many valley employers are looking into that process.

However, people willing to work here even for good wages still need somewhere to lay their heads at night. Local employees eager to buy their own houses are particularly disadvantaged when competing with the second homebuyers from Alberta.

The Pioneer is one of the lucky businesses that is currently fully-staffed, although as our business continues to grow we are now looking for a second graphic designer to help create ads and lay out pages.

Historical Lens Ann Calder and John McKay were married in Scotland, came to Canada and settled in Prince Edward Island. The family came west in 1881, first to Winnipeg and then to Moose Jaw. In 1886, John and his sons - Jock, James and Cham - drove their cattle from Moose Jaw to the Columbia Valley. John and his wife Ann developed the Upper Valley Ranch north of Radium. Canada says enough is enough Dear Editor: These remarks are addressed to Jack Layton, federal NDP leader.

Mr. Layton, I have just read, a few moments ago, your comments about troop deaths and injuries in Afganistan and how you want to cut and run because the going has gotten tough.

Yes, when people die, it is tragic - very tragic.

When people are injured it is regrettable.

But when an entire country is in chains, when the people are subjected to the inhuman intimidation inherent in Taliban systems, when a people can no longer speak their minds as in Afganistan under the Taliban, when people can no longer send their kids to school, when an entire country is chains, some body

has to step up and say enough is enough.

The UN has done just that. NATO has done just that. And Canada has said, enough is enough.

You, sir, and your cohorts are really starting to sound like Chamberlain in the 1930s - don’t ruffle feathers because someone might get hurt. Well, someone has been hurt. An entire country, Mr. Layton, an entire country.

I am proud to be a Canadian. I am proud that our governments, both Liberal and especially Conservatives, that have or had some balls to stay this course.

I am ashamed of you and the NDP. You are turning very pathetic as a political party. You should be ashamed.

Tentative deal reached on wetlands protection

By Jim Abbott, MP Kootenay-Columbia The Columbia wetlands is a very important natural area in our part of Canada and has been the subject of an ongoing controversy over a proposed boating regulation for the area, it seems, forever.

Recently, a group called the Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners was formed to include a range of interests in the area.

At the first meeting, June 19th, there were 26 different agencies, private businesses, community groups, including two mayors, and NGO representatives in attendance.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss proposed boating regulations that the federal Office of Boating Safety and other federal agencies have developed.

Their proposal contains several positive elements.

• The wetlands per se (the shallow ponds and wetlands on either side of the main river channel) will be closed to all motorized vessels.

• Towing activities (water-skiing and wakeboarding) will not be allowed in the wetlands or in the main channel.

• No personal water craft (jet skis) will be allowed in the main river channel or in the wetlands.

The major issue was boating access in the main channel of the river. In this proposed boating regulation, the main channel of the river will be identified and will be treated as separate from the remainder of the wetland area.

Use on the main river will be closed seasonally to protect environmental values, primarily nesting and migrating waterfowl and spawning fish.

• During the winter (Dec. 1–Feb. 28) there is minimal use except by trappers. There was agreement to allow trappers to use boats up to 20 horsepower for their activities early in the winter.

No access for snowmobiles would be allowed.

• During the spring period (March 1–June 30) the main channel would be closed to all motorized traffic, to pro-

tect spawning rainbow and cutthroat trout and spring migratory use and nesting by waterfowl.

(There was some discussion around the dates of the spring period (June 30 vs. July 15).

• During the summer period (July 1–Aug. 31) the main channel would be open to boats of all sizes and horsepower.

• In the fall period (Sept. 1–Nov. 30) the main channel would be closed to protect fall spawners (bull trout and kokanee) and migrating waterfowl.

(Some consideration would be given to hunters so they could access the area by boat and retrieve game).

It is important to stop for a moment and reflect on the fact that the foregoing proposal achieves the highest value: protection of waterfowl and nesting habitat, year-round.

With the absence of regulations, this has been the item of greatest concern to many of us in the Columbia Valley.

Regulations are within our grasp but in the opinion of some Columbia River residents the regulations don’t go far enough.

They feel the issue of horsepower, speed, or boat size allowed on the main channel must be considered.

But, the delay of implementation and process to allow for other considerations has the real potential of continuing the 2008 nesting season with no protection.

I have recommended to the regional office of Boating Safety in Vancouver that the formal process to achieve wetlands protection commence immediately, while the issues are reviewed.

I would like to congratulate all the people who have worked toward the protection and management of the Columbia Wetlands over the years and especially those in the Stewardship Group who have attempted, quite successfully, I might add, to put together a broad community consensus on this issue.

I think we are getting close to resolution on this issue, finally, and I will continue to work with the federal bureaucracy, local government and local groups to finally resolve this issue.

Broadband backlash not warranted

Dear Editor:

In response to Cam Berry’s letter re: broadband.

When this controversy started some months ago I was ambivalent to the whole thing. I was aware of the tax implications and was prepared to let everything go ahead without comment.

We attended the information meeting in Fairmont put on by the Regional District of East Kootenay. The meeting was poorly attended and those that were there were there to complain and not to listen. Many had no understanding at all, of what was planned, and really had no interest in being better informed.

Forward a few weeks and I received a chain email started by Mr. Berry. The letter was full of poor information and was meant to raise hysteria rather than inform. For those that read and did no research of their own, it is easy to see how the backlash accelerated.

In a return email to Mr. Berry and all who were on the email list, I pointed out the inaccuracies. As well, I said at that time that if enough people submitted forms through the alternative process, that there would be a referendum, and that would cost more money.

Let me make clear the points I oppose: 1. The alternative approval process is undemocratic. So, in response, this cabal used pyramid email loaded with inaccuracies to generate the numbers required to force a referendum.

“Make sure if you have any students in your house over 18, get them to send in the form.” How democratic.

2. Did the public not speak clearly enough . . . ?

Like Jumbo, it is hard to determine the majority opinion by letters to the media. There is certainly a strong anti broadband core, but it “could be” that the entire group has been heard from, in which case they do not constitute a majority.

2. Second homeowners from Calgary don’t get to exercise their rights to say no. The implication seems to be that B.C. is undemocratic. The same laws on residence apply in Alberta, Cam. The situation in Canmore is much the same for second homeowners.

3. Rapidly changing technology will make the system redundant before it is paid for. The technology is not in the fibre optic cable, it is in the electronic components along the way. What the plan seeks to pay for is fibre optic cable from the backbone, to residents of highway. This is very similar to having phone or cable lines brought to your house, and they have been here for decades without becoming redundant.

4. Cam takes exception to RDEK politicians telling him that residents don’t understand what is best for them. What they were saying is you don’t understand what all is involved which, by what I read from opponents, is true. I have heard everything from inflated cost projections to broadband is killing the bees.

5. “We are a market-based user-pay society.” Actually Canada, historically, leans more to a collective mentality, concerned about the common good. If what you say is true, then the rest of the regional district should not have to pay for your water problems.

The unreachable areas for broadband are more likely to have wells.

6. The broadband service will have an amortized cost of over $28 million. Where did you pull this number from? The tax bill is for $0.43 per thousand of assessment and that is the only number bandied about by opponents. This is the service cost for the maximum possible borrowed amount that the district is seeking. The projected cost is 28 to 30 cents. Annual service costs for the debt are projected to be $920,000 per year over 25 years. Even using simple math multiples, that is only $23 million (not the $28 million Cam mentions) Using the term amortized cost assures me that Cam does not understand this accounting term.

The other issue that opponents never mention- all monies collected by RDEK for access to the fibre optic network must be, by law, applied to the debt. Also in these numbers is as all the new subdivisions come on line the debt will be spread out among more taxpayers.

(And aren’t there plenty of new subdivisions).

In the end, I am neither for nor against the initiative, but am willing to pay for it through my taxes. To Cam and his cabal - stop muddying the debate. The only two issues for you are you want to pay as little tax as possible, and you want the second homeowners to have their say. Anything else you say is merely rationalizing.

Nothing out there is better than broadband Dear Editor: We’ve been communicating over copper wire for well over 100 years. It just doesn’t cut it any more.

We need a sensible upgrade. No matter how you look at it, nothing competes with the Fibre-Optic Broadband proposed by the RDEK! Unlike alternative high-speed technologies that transmit data wirelessly or over copper and coaxial cable lines, Fibre-Optic technology can transmit data, video, and voice in the form of light over glass.

On a strand of fibre no thicker than a human hair, a feature-length film can download in four seconds.

Laser through a strand of glass just can’t be matched by any other technology and is our best bet for the long-term.

A greatest point of the RDEK Broadband initiative is that we are going to own it. Dig up a 25-yearold BC Tel bill and tell me that owning your own utilities is not a good idea!

Some say “we can get it cheaper.” With an assessment of $300,000, your anticipated tax would be $84 per year, which is just $7 per month! You could save $7 simply by “bundling” your HD television, telephone and Internet from a competitive

selection of providers. The alternative, wireless, has several issues that make it inferior to Fibre-Optic Broadband.

• It’s Internet only.

• You have no control of rising fees.

• You still have to get your TV through cable or satellite.

• You’re at the mercy of one or two providers.

• Interference issues.

• Slower.

• Not as secure.

Most of us are very disappointed the Fibre-Optic Broadband “Alternative Approval Process” so narrowly missed avoiding a referendum by a little more than 300 votes over 10. To all the people who voted against Fibre-Optic Broadband - you just cost us all $20,000 or $30,000 for a referendum!

The only rationale to oppose to the initiative would be: not having taken the time to research the issue properly, have some kind of “fear of change” condition, have a selfish disregard for the community, or you’re stuck in a time warp.

I suggest you go back to the RDEK website (www.rdek.bc.ca) and reread all the broadbandrelated literature especially the “frequently asked

questions.” There is no way, if you fully understood this proposal, could you disagree with it.

Some of you missed the whole point of the Alternative Approval Process. It’s a cost cutting way of avoiding a referendum on popular sure-thing issues where no opposition is expected, such as the RDEK Fibre-Optic Broadband proposal. Doh! It was obvious a lot of work and time has gone into the RDEK Fibre-Optic Broadband initiative and they deserve our commendation for looking further ahead than some of us! We are all hurt by this ridiculous setback. Look folks, you have a responsibility to your fellow citizens to be informed when we’re casting votes and make public pronouncements.

It seems more people voted against the “Alternative Approval Process” process itself, than against the fibre-optic broadband issue.

On these grounds, I move the motion that we declare the results of the June vote “null and void” and set a new deadline for opposition voting, using the “Alternative Approval Process.” It’s a waste of money to let this go to referendum.

If you love movies but get bored of Hollywood productions, Jay Craven's Disappearances is about as far away from Hollywood as you can get without leaving the continental United States— Vermont!

Craven is a hip, long-haired, New England professor who wears a scarf and Red Sox cap with his corduroy blazer, is a craft director and has more time than money.

Disappearances is Craven's third film adapted from a novel by Howard Frank Mosher, another Vermont coot, who sets all his novels in Kingdom County, a fictional version of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.

The film is a coming-of-age story of a young Wild Bill Bonhomme (Charlie McDermott) growing up in a family of whiskey runners who make their fortunes smuggling whiskey back and forth over the loosely-guarded border between Vermont and Quebec.

Desperate for money to save the family farm, Wild Bill's father, Quebec

Bill (Kris Kristofferson), decides to make one last whiskey run to earn money to buy feed for the livestock.

What follows is an adventure that, at times, reminded me of Treasure Island, peopled with colourful characters and dangerous situations, drawing a boy into manhood with each successive challenge.

Beautifully shot in the wilds of Vermont by the German Wolfgang Held, the film captures the look of depressionera New England with elaborate costumes and sets more typical of a Hollywood backlot than rural Vermont.

Craven's fundraising tenacity—which relied at times on cold-calling donors and convincing Kristofferson to perform a benefit concert—made such an ambitious production possible outside the Hollywood system. Have a look. I think you will enjoy it.

Welcome to the Windermere Room.

Invermere’s newest restaurant, formerly known as the Greenery, is located in the Invermere Inn and chef Derek Standbrook and his wife Carol Cardinal are here to stay.

“We want to put this place on the map for food,” Derek said.

The Windermere Room opened June 28th after the previous restaurant in its location had been closed for five years.

Derek and Carol moved to Invermere from Waterton, Alberta, to make the Windermere Room legendary. In Waterton, Derek was a chef at the dining room at the Bayshore Inn located in Waterton National Park. The layout of the room changes greatly from lunch to dinner. Around 4:45 p.m., Carol transforms the mood in the restaurant from casual lunch to elegant dinner.

The menu also transforms, but one thing does remain the same. The price. The Windermere Room makes “fine dining” affordable.

The Windermere room is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner.

Public invited to summer garden party For all those garden enthusiasts, an old-fashioned Garden Party will be held on Saturday, July 28th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Chester and Pat Allen in Radium. Pat kindly offered to host the party in her lovely garden at 8038 McIntosh Loop Road in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The couple have cultivated an acre of land surrounding their house and this will be a spectacular venue for the event.

Guests will be entertained by the musical talents of violinist Wanda Seel

and harpist Sharon Morgan. Refreshments will be served by members of the local Canadian Cancer Society and you will recognize them in their bright blue aprons sporting the Society’s daffodil logo.

Mrs. Allen has advised that her garden will be at its best at the end of July and she is very happy to host this event.

Volunteers will be at the entrance to the property to collect the admission fee of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years.

Children aged six to 10 years old are invited to “Catch the Reading Bug” this summer at the Invermere Public Library! Children can explore the world of reading when they join the 2007 Summer Reading Club. This year, in the realm of literature, all participants can explore: Things That Bug You, Insects, Car Trips, Spy Bugs, Bugs to Butterflies, Doodlebugs, and Germy bugs.

Children can join this free summerlong program and receive a reading log and bookmark to start them on their quest to catch the reading bug. The reading log is a fun way to keep track of the books that children read throughout the summer and each child can receive stickers and great prizes.

At the end of the summer, children attending the club meetings who complete their reading log will receive a special Summer Reading Club medal in recognition of their achievement.

ince-wide program encourages children to read over the summer holidays while school is out thus helping youngsters to maintain and develop the literacy skills that they acquired during the school year.

Studies show that voluntary reading is the number one factor in establishing good reading habits in children. This is best accomplished when children get to choose their own books in a reading environment like the public library where there is a wide variety of books available to them.

The Summer Reading Club reaches over 65,000 children in British Columbia every summer and is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association with the assistance of the Public Library Services Branch, Ministry of Education.

YOUR MONEY What is pension splitting?

On October 31st, 2006 the federal government announced a new planning opportunity for Canadian seniors: the ability to split pension income in 2007.

Now that 2007 is more than half over, it would be wise to familiarize oneself with the new rules.

What is Pension Income?

The definition of pension income for income splitting purposes mirrors the definition of pension income for qualifying for the federal pension tax credit.

Income that qualifies for income splitting may depend on the recipient’s age as follows: Recipients Under Age 65: 1) Pension Income from a Registered Pension Plan (RPP). Generally employer sponsored pension plans.

Recipients Over Age 65: 1) Pension Income from a Registered Pension Plan (RPP). Generally employer sponsored pension plans.

2) Income from an annuity in a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) 3) Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) withdrawals from any investments.

4) Withdrawals from any investments held within a RRIF that is subject to federal or provincial lockedin legislation such as an (LRIF) or (LIF) 5) Income from a deferred profit sharing plan (DPSP) annuity.

What Pension Income is Ineligi le for plit ting?

1) Old Age Security (OAS) 2) Guaranteed Income Supplements (GIS) 3) Canada Pension Plan (CPP) 4) RRSP withdrawal that are not converted to an annuity or to a RRIF 5) Income from Retirement Compensation Arrangements (RCA) o w is the Income plit?

Mechanically, any pension income that is split can

be simply deducted from the income of one spouse or partner’s tax return and included as income on the tax return of the other spouse or partner.

The election to split income will be made one year at a time and can be changed or modified each year depending upon planning and financial considerations.

Eligible pension earners will not have to fill out any forms, notify any government agency, transfer any money from spouse to another, or do anything special during 2007 to be able to split their income with their spouse or partner. All they will have to do is file a tax return showing the amount of eligible pension income to be split. o w Much Income an e plit ach ear?

Up to 50 percent of eligible pension income can be transferred from one partner or spouse’s tax return to another’s. law ac s It is widely anticipated that split pension income will be included and deducted from each spouse or partner’s taxable income when determining Old Age Security clawbacks. Previously, if one spouse or partner received most or all of the pension income in a household, he or she may have lost some of their OAS. pousal Ps Spousal RSPs will not become obsolete because there will still be scenarios where having a spousal RSP will be very beneficial. If a couple are both under the age of 65 and they want to split income from their RRSPs, they will still need to have invested money into a spousal RRSP to achieve this goal.

For couples wanting to split more than 50 percent of pension income or for couples with one spouse or partner significantly older than the other, a spousal RSP will still remain an effective tool in tax planning tool.

Harnessed in, wrapped around my legs and waist.

My safety, a rope, fastened to me, leading to Roy’s hands. My feet, placed in shoes made small enough that they forced my toes to curl, balanced between cracks and rocks. My legs were shaking. My leg is a sewing machine.

I crouched low, bouncing so I could burst up and reach the rock which was just out of my reach. The splits in my hands were filled with soft white chalk.

The sun brushed my skin, sweat building under a grey sports bra.

“Come on May,” I whispered to myself. Ready to make a final reach for the rock I can hear Roy’s voice yelling through the mountain silence. “PUSH,” he screamed “PUSH, MAY!” The story of my life as I fell hard, scraping my knee off rocks as I came down. The rope tightened, suspending me in air.

I was born in Downey, California, automatically giving me American and Canadian citizenship because my mother is Canadian.

I was delivered at home with a midwife and no medication for the Mamma Bear or me. I was a high-risk pregnancy, so the State’s medical insurance wouldn’t cover my birth. My mother had had to have a blood transfusion after having her second child. Doctors said I would die if I too didn’t undergo a blood transfusion at birth.

But my mom’s a hippy. I lived and I’m lucky my name isn’t Rice Cake. I’m just May. I was lied to and told I was born in the Dodger Stadium, really though, my mother thought she needed to pee. Out popped May, my dad catching me before I hit the porcelain. I

was born in a toilet.

I was born into a family of three brothers, Jay the oldest, then Roy, me and Todd, the youngest of us all.

Because of this, every logical point of view says I should be good at Super Mario. I am not and it just doesn’t make sense.

Despite this I practised shooting hoops until each time I tried they arced perfectly without touching anything but net. By five I knew all the words to Lithium by Nirvana. I spent days comparing, remaking and breaking myself into a mold of my three brothers combined.

And then there were two.

Roy took over the role of oldest brother fast, inviting Todd and me over as often as possible. Nights which the three of us would spend in smoke-filled rooms. We would keep laughing to keep from silence, to keep from awkward tears. We grasped desperately to each other. Trying to fill in empty spots where Jay’s presence had faded and grown silent. Knowing that we couldn’t, trying all the same.

My knee was bruised and cut. The scrapes stung against fabric and I could feel the joints fighting against movement. Hands chalked, feet already sweating in their confined space. My hair pushed back under a helmet, framing a line of sweat on my forehead. My hands were raw from the climb two days ago, the dirty rocks showed no mercy to these tender spots.

I tried harder, saving energy for the moment I would need it most. Placing my feet as an artist instead of forcefully using all my strength. Bringing out my feminine side, I danced with the rock wall.

I found myself so close to the top, my body begging for this climb to be over. I positioned myself in the still familiar crouch, reminded myself to breathe, preparing for the grab.

Letting my tongue loose from my mouth I screamed, putting every inch of strength I had left into reaching for that one rock hold.

My anthem of Roy yelling PUSH was not lost in the sound of my loud cry. My fingers slipped under the hold, ripping off what new skin had formed.

I pulled my body up and over the hanging ledge, crawling until my rope stopped and I could only see the sky.

Become a Junior Naturalist at Kootenay National Park The Junior Naturalist program is back in full swing and looking for kids ages 6 to 12 to come and have fun exploring the park and learning about wildlife through games, hikes, crafts, activities and special park guests.

Every Tuesday and Friday from July 13th until August 31st, between 10 and 12 noon, Hailey Mattson will be on hand at Redstreak Campground in Kootenay National Park to help your children have fun in the park. The cost is only $5 per child for this two-hour program. Pre-register for the Junior Naturalist program at the Friends of Kootenay National Park “Nature’s Gifts and Bookstore” in the Radium Hot Springs Information Centre at 3476525.

Kimberley family working in Africa The Hale family of Kimberley have begun their new life in Malawi, a small country in southern Africa.

Dr. llona Hale and her husband Dave have taken their two sons, seven-year-old Emerson and four-yearold Oliver on a two-year volunteer sabbatical.

Dave is the youngest son of Alice Hale of Invermere, long-time resident and well-known potter who operates Caraway Pottery and exhibits regularly at Pynelogs Cultural Centre.

They will be volunteering with an organization called Voluntary Services Overseas that has a local office in Malawi. This is an international development agency that operates through sending volunteers rather than food or aid money directly. Their vision is “A world without poverty in which people work together to fulfill their potential.”

Says Dave: “VSO is a great organization. They’ve provided us with a lot of training to prepare for life and work in another country.” The organization only sends volunteers that are specifically requested by the host countries. In the case of Malawi, there is a severe shortage of health professionals (one doctor for every 60,000 people) so they have requested physicians.

Ilona will be working in a large rural hospital with one other local doctor caring for inpatients, doing clinics and performing surgeries, many of which are being done by the nurses because of lack of personnel.

Dave intends to find work in the environmental sector only once the kids are settled in school “because it looks like Ilona is going to be kind of busy!”

Why on earth would they want to do something like this? Several reasons, according to the couple: To learn about and experience a different culture and get a better understanding of how and why life is different in other countries; to help out in whatever small way that they can to empower people to overcome disadvantages they face and hopefully leave something behind that will have some lasting effect; and to give their children a more realistic view of the world.

“We want them to realize that what we have here is not universal, that it is only by some happy geographical accident that they ended up being born into the privilege that comes with being Canadian.”

Dave and Ilona have both worked and travelled in developing countries in the past. “Now it’s time for us to share this with the kids.”

Historic bocce ball gaining in popularity

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff One of the world’s oldest sports is making a comeback.

Next to soccer, bocce is the most popular sport in the world. It’s making a home for itself here in the valley with players from all over the country coming to compete in the Canadian Bocce Championships in Kimberly, July 2022.

“It’s easy, anybody can do it, anywhere,” said Owen Lebourdais, a Grade 5 teacher at Laird Elementary School in Invermere, who was a part of last year’s silver medal team.

The history of bocce begins in 5000 B.C; the Egyptians played a form of bocce with polished rocks. Word of the game moved quickly from Egypt to Greece and finally Rome.

The Romans introduced bocce throughout the empire and its Roman roots are still visible in its name. Bocce is derived from the Latin word “bottia,” meaning boss.

The game gained prominence in

Europe and was enjoyed by royalty and peasants alike. Soon it began to “threaten the security of the nation,” taking

All teams must have a name, and the Kimberly Chamber of Commerce reserves the right to refuse team names, as this is a family event.

Green Zone: Golfing with Casey

By Harold Hazelaar Invermere A couple of weeks ago, I was able to participate in a “Men’s Night” at The Springs Golf Course with Casey.

As you know, Casey is the golfer in the family and I am the “wannabe.”

We don’t play together very often, as I tend to bring his game down to a disgusting level, but once or twice a year he manages to overlook my faults and invites me out.

It wasn’t that long ago that I can recall taking Casey golfing with me and he was the one trying to impress me. Now the roles have reversed and I definitely don’t impress him much!

“Men’s Night” for Casey usually means a few bucks change hands in his favor and Donna and I like that (read: fewer handouts). The Springs regulars can attest to the amount of times Casey has left the course on a

Tuesday night a little flusher than when he came!

On this particular evening, Casey figured I needed to try a few Hybrid clubs to assist in improving my game. Several years ago, when he put the Ping G2 driver in my hands, my game improved drastically, so I was game for the change again.

The 19 and 22 degree Ping G5 Hybrids replace my 3 and 5 fairway woods and my 3 iron, plus add about 15 yards to my usual 3 and 5 wood distances.

“Hello!” Why don’t I think of these changes by myself?

I’m not stupid, am I! Don’t answer that!

The first hole is a ninety degree dogleg left, and after hitting what I considered a perfect tee shot out to the corner, Casey and our other two playing partners all line up and hit their drives out over the trees and immediately I know I am way out of my league. Suddenly, I’m forced to impress with my second shot and proceed to muff it, eventually settling for a bogey. Meanwhile, the other three all are close to the green, chip on and have birdie putts. Lucky for me they all missed. One down after one and the slaughter has begun!

Throughout the remaining 17 holes, I managed to hit some good shots with the hybrids, not good

enough to ease the lambasting, but for me, they were encouraging shots. All three of my group were very gracious and pleasant to play with all evening but they reminded me of sharks circling someone with a bloody nose! All in all, the company was good, I think I managed to retain some helpful golf tips, and the pain of being pummeled on the golf course is already a distant memory. Can’t wait for another invite!

So now in a few weeks when I go on my annual golfing weekend with my new hybrids, I will be better than ever and ready to take on all 15 of the guys in my group for the title of Master Sandbagger. This year I will bring Christina Lake Golf Course to its knees!

Look out, Jim, here I come with a brand new “A” game to thwart your title defense.

Brown joins water board

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff As the the newest member of the Edgewater Utility Commission, Randy Brown joins a water board in a better position than some of the others up and down the valley.

Mr. Brown, who was appointed the fifth and final member of the commission by the regional district board last week, joins Mike Hutchinson, Nancy Phair, Margaret Thierbach and Gerry Willkie. The group will act as a liaison between Edgewater utility customers and the regional district, which took over operation of water and sewer utility a little more than a year ago.

Like other valley communities, the Edgewater is in the process of upgrading water and sewer to accommodate recent growth, but the growth in Edgewater hasn’t been as feverish as other parts of the valley.

“For a small community, we have a very good system,” Mr. Willkie commented. One phase into a three-phase upgrade of the system, he said, Edgewater is in a good position for the future.

“It’s looking quite good right now.”

The first phase tripled the town’s storage capacity and twinned the line from the source, Lake Baptiste. Phase two will deal with the disinfection of the water supply, which can be very expensive, he said.

Although the water is naturally low in turbidity, water quality tests could show the need for membrane filtration, Mr. Willkie explained.

MacAuley Creek, which feeds Lake Baptiste, drains a huge basin, he said, and the water falls gently into town propelled only by gravity.

Phase three will upgrade the water lines in the old part of town and replace all of the fire hydrants.

The Edgewater sewer system, which was upgraded about a year and half ago, he said, produces near-perfect effluent.

“It’s just a great, state-of-the-art system,” Mr. Willkie commented. “It was monitored for well over a year and the effluent has been excellent.”

Meetings of the Edgewater Utility Commission, he said, are open to the public and will be announced in advance.

Cathy’s workshop: Summer is the season to stain

By Cathy Dalrymple Pioneer Columnist Last week’s article came across a little unclear due to an editing error. The seventh sentence should have read: “Take your tape measure and using a corner as zero, make a mark at an interval of three (this can therefore be 3, 6, 9, 30, etc. ) across the base of the cabinet.”

Now that summer is in full swing and the windows are open, you may be tempted to get to those staining jobs you’ve put off.

Be sure to ventilate your workspace as some products have strong fumes. You can always stain outside, but be aware of flies and dust that might settle on your finish.

Before you begin, you must first identify what you are staining and what finish you wish to achieve before proceeding. Is the project interior, exterior, heavy use or decorative? What kind of wood is it, hard wood, soft wood, knotty, open grained, close grain? There are so many variables that can change the outcome of your finishing job. There are many products on the market so carefully read the directions or ask a service member to help you find the product needed for the job. If you are working with pine, for example, you will want to

treat the knots with a sealer so that they will not bleed through your finish. The best product for sealing knots is shellac.

You can buy a shellac-based sealer from a reputable paint store. Once the knots are sealed you may proceed to stain the piece.

When staining wood I find it good practice to never stop your brush stroke midway, particularly on the first coat.

Since the wood is very thirsty, stopping your brush stroke will leave a line on the piece. Even if you are running out of stain on your brush continue the stroke and it will feather out the stain rather than leaving a discernible line. This is particularly obvious with soft woods or open grain woods such as oak.

When finishing close grain and hard woods such as hard maple you may need to sand the surface in order to open the grain a bit to allow penetration of the stain. If this is not done the stain may sit on top of the wood. This is also true with many wood varieties that have a “mill glaze” on them. As the wood is passed through the planer it crushes the fibres flat to the wood surface and these must be lifted in order for the stain to penetrate.

Another scenario that might be encountered is trying to finish a piece which is comprised of varying

wood types or shades of wood. Commercial finishing shops use spray finishes which have the stain in the finish.

Wood grain may get lost with these products but an even colouring can be achieved. You can get a similar result using a brush and a finish with a built in stain such as Minwax Polyshades.

The first coat will look weak but after several coats the desired colour can be achieved. Another solution is to use a gel stain. This is applied with a cloth and is a good hiding stain as well as a good open grain stain.

This product can even be used over a sealer but will not be as dark since it won’t penetrate the wood.

The key to a good finish is patience. You must allow the finish to dry between coats, unless otherwise stated on the product label, and many thin coats are better than a heavy coat. You will find this to be particularly true with spray finishes.

I like to make a test piece before finishing my woodwork. Although it can be time-consuming, it will ensure the desired finish. This is most helpful when I am trying to match an existing finish. I make notes of steps and products used so that I can refer to them for future projects.

A Day in Court The following individuals were sentenced in Adult Criminal Court in Invermere on July 4 with the Honourable Judge Ron Webb presiding: • Robert K. Armstrong of Calgary was sentenced to one day in jail for stealing a car from a Revelstoke gas station. The court heard that Mr. Armstong was abandoned by a travelling partner in Vancouver with only the shirt on his back (a T-shirt which read, “Same Shirt, Dierent Dayâ€?) and that he stole the car in desperation after walking more than 100 kilometres. “I didn’t want the car; I needed the ride,â€? he told the judge. • Ian D. Nittel was issued a $200 common-law peace bond for uttering threats. • Franklin C. Vanwoudenberg received a suspended sentence and 18 months of probation for failing to comply with a court order from a previous charge.

• Christopher P. Boulton received a suspended sentence and one year of probation with conditions, and ordered to provide a sample of his DNA on one count of assault resulting from an early morning ďŹ ght with his girlfriend. • Shawn A. Laplante pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving after the crown dropped two alcoholrelated charges. Mr. Laplante was ďŹ ned $300 and a $45 victim surcharge. • Sylvain M. Ouellette received a 30-day conditional sentence and ďŹ ned $100 after being picked up for selling a dime bag of marijuana to undercover police in a sweep of downtown Vancouver drug deals, the court heard. • Thomas L. Thompson was ďŹ ned $2,000, a $200 victim surcharge, and prohibited from driving for three years for operating a motor vehicle while disqualiďŹ ed.

Judge Carlgren rejected Mr. Thompson’s defense that his extremely agitated behavior at the time of his arrest was the result of an ongoing case of claustrophobia.

P IONEER C LASSIFIEDS OBITUARY William Speta

April 22, 1918 - July 5, 2007 Bill was an adventurer; his life was full and complete. A baker by trade, he ran a successful bakery in Germany after the war. He and his wife Johanna immigrated to Canada in 1953 with four children, Kelly, Janey, Kurt, Tom. He worked in Caramat, Ontario, cutting pulp logs for a year, then they moved to Creston B.C. to work on an orchard, then to the Toby Benches where he worked in local tie mills and for Ronachers Sawmill and out at their camp on Forster Creek. He also worked underground at the Paradise Mine, and then also at Keno Hill, Yukon Territories and Uranium City, Sask. He also managed the Alpine and Elkhorn Ranches in Windermere, operated an 80-acre vegetable farm in Grand Forks, and an orchard in the Okanagan. He also leased and operated two service stations: the Canal Flat Texaco, and the Cranbrook Husky. In that time he had six more children, Bill, Rose, Ernie, Ron, Bob, and Carol. William always had a large garden and many beautiful flower beds. In Bill’s later years he lived in Ghana, Africa, for two years, and enjoyed it immensely. He is survived by his ten children and 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grand children.

Gone, but not forgotten.

Funeral services will be held in Edgewater, at the All Saints Church, Saturday July 14th, 07, at 2:00 pm.

Thoughts on turning 42 Lisa Rohrick, formerly of Invermere, is working as a missionary in Niger, Africa. Her parents Dan and Lenore Rohrick of Invermere are celebrating their 50th anniversary.

With another birthday just around the corner, I must admit that the days of my youth are history. I have moved into the box labelled “middle age.” (Moving day was actually quite a while ago, but it’s taken me a few years to realize it.)

The other day I was at the pool at the American recreation centre, where four or five times a week I swim lengths for an hour. My goal is partly exercise and partly a carefully guarded escape from interruption, time when I am free to think, plan and pray.

In the cool season it’s also a refreshing break, allowing me to temporarily forget that I live in the dust of the Sahara Desert. But it’s hot season, and the pool is far from refreshing. It’s a bit like swimming lengths at Fairmont Hot Springs (in the hot pool!) on the hottest summer day. But for some reason I persevere.

Back to the other day. I finished my lengths and was panting in the corner of the pool when a 20something gal with the American Peace Corps started a conversation.

“I really admire your swimming,” she said.

“Thank you,” I gasped.

“It’s so good to see an older person serious about getting exercise.”

An older person! Me? We were the only two people in the pool, so I knew she wasn’t talking about anyone else. At 42, someone else has already moved me into the box labelled “older people.” I’m having an identity crisis here!

I’m barely passed thinking of myself as a kid. It feels like I’ve just finished university and got started into my career. (Maybe the fact that I went to school

until I was 30 contributes to this feeling!) I know many people my age are well on their way to having their mortgages paid off. But I’ve yet to even qualify for such a thing. And I’ve often referred to having a mortgage as a sign of being a “grown-up.” Surely I can’t really be an “older person”!

Okay, I admit that I have more grey hair than my grandmother did at 80. Someone told me it’s a bad sign when the grey matter starts coming out on your head. So I’m letting my hair grow. I dare not risk cutting off any grey cells!

I live between two worlds. My home culture worships youth. My host culture honours and respects age. Life expectancy here in Niger is only 44, so at 42 I’ve practically got one foot in the grave. Yikes! Maybe I really am an older person.

Maybe it’s the African influence, but I have no intention of hiding my age. God has looked after me for 42 years and I want to give Him credit for the full shot!

The day after my troubling discussion in the pool, I was on my way home from an evening at a friend’s house. I was buzzing along the dirt road on my motorbike when the engine started to sputter. No problem!

This happens all the time. I simply need to reach down to the fuel switch and turn it to the reserve tank, which I usually manage to do before the engine stalls.

When my hand hit the fuel switch that night, my heart sank. The switch was already on the reserve tank.

Apparently my escaping grey cells forgot to flip the switch when I bought gas.

The engine sputtered to a halt and there I sat with no gas. I was just over a kilometer from home, and it was a nice night for a walk. So I set off, pushing my bike. I was glad the heat had subsided, but at 10 p.m. it was still 35 degrees!

Patches of that road have very thick sand, so it was hard work pushing the bike. My clothes were soon drenched, and sweat was stinging my eyes. And I was enjoying a chuckle, thinking what a good thing it is that I am an older person who takes exercise seriously so that this little adventure wasn’t killing me!

The next day I was back in the pool!

Ladies’ Golf Notes Twenty-two ladies were present for the last golf day in June. The game was the pesky Orange Ball in which each lady is doomed to play her worst hole while using the orange ball and scoring for the ‘team.’

Winners included the foursome of Mary Jean Anakin, Pauline Haltman, Diane Kochoruk and Deb Plato.

The threesome of Pat Andruschuk, Helga Boker and Clara Hart took second place.

Individual winners of the day were Deuce Pot: Sherry Avery (two weeks in a row!); Putting Pot: Lorna Scott and Dianne Stewart. Carol Standford won the Door Prize.

Members are now enjoying the early morning start of summer and all results and prizes will be awarded once monthly.

Ladies are reminded to enter ALL golf scores so that an accurate handicap is reflected for the season.

Did you know that in St. Andrews, Scotland, right beside the ‘Old Course’ is a putting course and the ladies of the town have a Putting Club which meets regularly and holds numerous competitions!

This man receiveth sinners

Luke 15:2: “And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying this man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.”

This was a change brought against our Lord, but it is full of comfort to us. He did receive sinners, and He received them as sinners. He does receive sinners still, and receives them regardless of their sins, and because of their sin. No matter how worthless, despised by others, or peculiar their circumstances may be, of any nation or age without any discrimination, with all their sins upon them. He receives them without anything to recommend them, most graciously.

He receives them to pardon all their sins. To cleanse them from all their defilement. To justify them from all charges. To heal their wounds. To make them new creatures. To use them to His glory. To make them

peculiar people, zealous of good works on earth; and to glorify them with Himself in heaven forever.

Friend, if you feel that you cannot go to God as a saint, go to Jesus as a sinner. Are you doubting your past experience? Go to Him, for He will receive you.

Go to Him now; and here is how!

“That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe that God has raised Him from the Dead, you shall be saved.”

10: For with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness and with the mouth he confesses resulting in salvation.
