Homes for stray animals aim of new organization

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Three local animal lovers are joining forces to help the lost pets of the Columbia Valley.

Cindy Hopper, Jenn Ferguson and Lana Banham are in the early stages of creating ICAN, the Invermere Companion Animal Network. This is an organization attempting to help take the stress off the Cranbrook SPCA from this area.

“Our focus is to provide help in re-homing pets that are already in the area and connecting owners with their lost pets,” Cindy said. “Just being a central lost and found, basically.”

Cindy is the owner of Choppers, located beside Peppi’s Pizza, a pet store that has been operating in Invermere for two years.

Lana is the owner of a boarding kennel and grooming shop called Bow-Wow Meow. Jenn Ferguson is an Invermere pet owner who wants to help.

The two business-owners initiated the idea in response to the high volume of calls their shops and the local veterinarian is receiving from people wanting to adopt animals, wanting to give away animals, and wanting to find lost animals. Cindy said between the three, they were receiving six to 10 phone calls every week and decided to take action.

“We want to deal with animal welfare,” Lana said. “We don’t want to step on the district’s toes, at all. We are hoping that we can all work together for the one common goal.”

Presently, the District of Invermere is without an animal control officer since Carol Dobson left the valley about two months ago.

When it is up and running, the ICAN organization will have a phone line open 24 hours a day to respond to lost and found animals.

Currently the organization has 11 members.

They plan to hold public meetings and eventually raise funds for an animal shelter.

“Right now we just want to see how great the need is, and then grow from there,” Cindy said.

ICAN is fully backed by the Cranbrook SPCA and will be running the concession at the upcoming Paws for a Cause event in Invermere on September 9th.

The group is also looking for volunteers willing to provide foster homes for animals while they are waiting for their new homes. They are also looking for donations of used pet supplies such as collars, leashes and kennels.

Invermere council turns up heat on owners of short-term rentals

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Following a fiery speech by Invermere resident Jill McCorry, the District of Invermere council took steps Tuesday night to turn up the heat on homeowners in residential neighborhoods who rent their homes for periods of less than 30 days.

Ms. McCorry, a resident of Copper Crown Place condominiums on 12th Avenue in Invermere, presented a laundry list of atrocities perpetrated against her and her young daughter by short-term renters in neighboring condominiums.

“More often than not, people come here to party,” she said. “You don’t want to bother the police, but it comes to that. At times, I feel like a prisoner in my own home.”

In addition to the noise of late-night partiers, she said, offences have ranged from open urination to vandalism in reprisal for complaints lodged against the renters.

“I was scared to death when my flower pots were overturned and people were on my deck,” she said.

A Google search of the numbered Alberta company listed as the owner of the condominium in question led to a website offering the property for rent on a nightly basis.

Gerald Hunt, the owner of the property, told The Pioneer he was unaware that zoning prohibited shortterm rentals and said he was unaware there were any problems with the neighbors.

“If it is, indeed, a sitation that’s not allowed,” he said, “I will have to look at renting it out like any othher landlord would (on a long-term basis).”

District of Invermere Chief Administrator Chris Prosser tried in vain to address the ongoing problem associated with short-term rentals in residential neigh-

borhoods at a council meeting earlier this year, but the issue was tabled for lack of an clear solution.

District of Invermere Mayor Mark Shmigelsky said that in spite of a bylaw prohibiting the short-term rental of homes in residential neighborhoods, the District of Invermere is empty-handed when it comes to enforcement of the bylaw.

“It’s a matter of enforcement and putting the dollars toward that,” he said. “It’s not going to be easy and it’s not going to be a quick fix.”

Mayor Shmigelsky blamed the province for disallowing zoning bylaws that carry a big enough fine to discourage homeowners from skirting the law.

“Whistler is a big municipality and throwing all kinds of money at this, and they’re being beat back by the province.”

District of Invermere Councillor Gerry Taft said a lack of hotel rooms in Invermere is a contributing factor.

“It is still a hard situation,” he said. “With the destination that we are, people want to stay in Invermere, but the number of available hotel rooms has actually gone down.”

District of Invermere Director of Development Services Meredith Hamstead says she has yet to find a municipal planner in her network of municipal planners who has found a silver-bullet solution to the problem.

For now, council voted to send letters to local real estate agents and property managers, reminding them that short-term rentals are prohibited in the R-1 and R-2 residential zones.

Until a new strategy to deal with the problems associated with short-term rental housing can be developed, Mayor Shmigelsky said residents should call the RCMP with complaints so there will be a record of the offences.

Sandcastle collapse becomes scene of near tragedy Submitted by Staff-Sgt. Doug Pack Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment Two boys building a sandcastle were buried alive last Saturday afternoon when their structure collapsed.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 11th RCMP received a complaint from the B.C. Ambulance Services that two boys were buried in the sand at Sand Hill Beach in Windermere.

Windermere Fire Department, B.C. Ambulance and Columbia Valley RCMP arrived at the same time and found that the two boys, both aged 12 years, had been dug out of the sand by nearby sunbathers and were apparently “all right.”

The boys had been working on a sand castle when it caved in. The legs of both boys were sticking out of the sand about a foot and they couldn’t escape.

The collapse was not seen by any adults on the beach, but only by other younger children.

An eight-year-old girl went up to a nearby adult sunbather and asked for a shovel.

Another adult overheard the little girl and thought her request a bit odd, so she got up to find out what was going on.

When she saw their feet, she alerted everyone on the beach and the boys were pulled out.

Upon attendance by RCMP, Fire and Ambulance, both boys were conscious and breathing.

However, rescue crews were told that the pair had been stuck in the sand for about five minutes and had lost consciousness.

The two boys, who were visitors to the valley, were taken to the hospital as a precaution and later released no worse for wear.

If the little girl hadn’t asked for a shovel, things could have been much worse.

Oddly enough, across North America, there are deaths that occur every year due to “playground” accidents.

Fortunately, this one turned out well for everyone.

Offending drivers caught in the act • August 8: Around 4:20 p.m., RCMP stopped a white van on Panorama drive. The driver had consumed liquor and was detained for impaired investigation. Unfortunately for him, the driver gave the investigating officer a false name. He later admitted this to police and provided his real name.

The man has been charged with impaired operation of motor vehicle, over .08, breach of probation, and driving while disqualified and obstruction of a peace officer.

• August 11: Around 12:13 a.m., a police officer witnessed a vehicle commit several driving infractions. The officer stopped the car on 8th Avenue in Invermere. The driver showed several symptoms of impairment by alcohol and was order to provide a breath sample.

Samples of the driver’s breath were taken and analyzed at 200 mg percent, 170 mg percent and 170 mg percent.

The driver was released from custody on an Appearance Notice.

The driver is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on October 23, 2007 to answer to charges of Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol and Driving While Over .08.

• August 11: At 2:11 am RCMP stopped a black pickup truck traveling east on Fairmont Street in Windermere.

The truck disobeyed a Stop sign, cutting in front of the officer.

The police officer activated his emergency lights and the vehicle stopped on the shoulder. As the police officer approached the truck, he recognized the driver as he had dealt with him in the past, and felt that the person was actually prohibited from driving a vehicle.

Investigation determined this was the case, and the man in question faces charges of Driving While Prohibited.

His vehicle was impounded under the provincial Administrative Driving Prohibition program.

While interviewing newly-inducted Rotary president Yvonne Redeker I managed to stumble on a particularly interesting cause: the Wheelchair Foundation.

I have always been looking for a way to volunteer, but my busy schedule with school and The Pioneer makes it a bit difficult for me to devote myself 100 percent to any specific cause.

Then it hit me. This was something I could do on my own time, whenever that might be, that would actually make a difference to somebody . . . even if I only managed to raise enough for one wheelchair.

New overpass set to open in Kicking Horse Canyon Jim Abbott, MP Kootenay-Columbia It’s an exciting time in the Kicking Horse Canyon near Golden. In mid-July, I toured the Trans-Canada Highway improvement project, and I’m happy to report that the new 5.8-kilometre section of four-lane highway and the new Park Bridge should be open to traffic by Labour Day. The new Park Bridge is a spectacular sight to see. It has a 405-metre span and rises 90 metres over the Kicking Horse River, sparking a lot of interest in travellers.

It’s easy to see how the project cost the Federal and Provincial governments $137 million. It is a massive, spectacular engineering feat. Visitors to the riding can stop at the Visitor Centre at Golden to see a large project wall map, bridge model, and construction photos.

While I was on the construction site, I spoke with many workers. Some were working on the new bridge deck, some were grading east of the bridge, and some were installing drainage culverts.

I was able to reassure these folks of my commitment to obtain funding for the next phase of the project. Ongoing investment in this route is key to continued growth and economic development for the Kootenay-Columbia area as well

as Canada’s Asia-Pacific trade connection: each day, up to 2,000 commercial transport trucks travel the canyon route, with the value of these trips reaching $1 billion per year.

Access to recreation is also important. Situated between two national parks, the Kicking Horse Canyon is a natural starting point for many activities. In winter, skiing, snowboarding and ice-climbing dominate.

Summertime brings out the parasailing and hang-gliding adventurer, along with rock climbers, hikers, cyclists, kayakers, and white water rafting thrill-seekers.

A study by the Conference Board of Canada predicts that better access to the area’s recreation opportunities is expected to translate into $46.1 million for the region, including an estimated 1,350 additional full-year jobs.

Cyclists will soon be able to enjoy wider shoulders on the new highway. As well, a three-kilometre long section of the old highway will be converted to a cycling and walking trail leading from the new Rafter’s Pullout and Rest Area to a lookout point.

I look forward to driving on the new road this fall, and expect to see great benefits as a result of this significant project.

Keira’s family plays waiting game

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff As the clock ticks down to the day baby Keira’s leg will be amputated, her mother Daphne Neal of Fairmont Hot Springs says she believes the tumour is shrinking.

Keira, who is now 14 months old, will undergo surgery at Alberta Children’s Hospital on September 4th.

Despite being on her eighth week of chemotherapy, her mother describes Keira as “having a ton of energy.”

“I don’t see much of a change, to be quite honest,” Daphne said.

Keira is scheduled to be rescanned to determine the size of her tumor on August 28th.

It has been almost three months since Keira was diagnosed with a rare malignant cancer that forced her parents, Daphne and Al, to make the difficult decision to amputate her leg in order to save her life.

Since then, fundraising efforts have been taking place across Canada to assist the Neal family with taking care of Keira’s medical expenses, including costly drugs, rehabilitation and artificial limbs.

“If you think of kids and how quickly they grow, then you can think of how quickly she is going to need a new prosthetic,” Daphne said. “ I don’t know how many prosthetics she is going to go through in a year, but I can only imagine.”

Daphne also added that a prosthetic leg costs upwards of seven to ten thousand dollars.

The Neal family has also had to rent a home in Calgary to live in while Keira is undergoing chemo and rehabilitation, meaning that Daphne will not be able to return to work in September as a schoolteacher.

The residents of the Columbia Valley have also wrapped their arms around the Neal family in the form of numerous fundraisers.

• The Whitehouse Classic held on July 20th raised over $30,000 for little Keira and her family.

• Interior World in Invermere will be donating the funds from their Customer Appreciation Day barbeque to the Neal family.

• Daphne’s women’s hockey team, the BC Outback, has raised money for the family’s living expenses in Calgary.

• Friends of Keira’s parents, Glen and Rhonda Sage, have organized a hockey tournament and silent auction for September 7 to 9. Anyone is welcome to register as a team or as an individual. Keep an eye on The Pioneer for more information.

“It’s a heartwrenching situation,” Christine said. “It cries out to everyone.”

Another fundraiser was held August 9 in Toronto

by Keira’s grandmother, Margaret Dalton. The silent auction raised thousands of dollars and was visited by members of the Canadian Women’s hockey team, including gold medalist Cheryl Pounder.

The top-selling item was an Olympic jacket worn at the 2006 Torino, Italy opening ceremonies, which went for a grand total of US $5,500.

Daphne’s uncle, who purchased the jacket, had it signed by the members of Team Canada who were present at the fundraiser and will later give to Keira.

“I was just like ‘Wow!’ In one evening, that that kind of money can be raised,” Daphne said. “I am very appreciative.”

A male perspective on belly dancing

Dear Editor: When I was living in Finland I was married to an English woman, Marion, who was a director of a marketing research company in London. However her passion and love was and still is belly dancing. Her teacher was one of the last and famous belly dancers of Egypt. She gave public performances in London, Brussels and Finland. Nowadays she supports herself teaching this art and she has more than 100 students.

I was fortunate to see her dancing many times, like a goddess, and I admired her for her skill and grace. I decided to attend her classes and I was the only guy in the whole country who was learning belly dancing.

The one thing that I realise is that many people have a distorted perception regarding belly dancing. I have the feeling that belly dancing is very closely related to martial arts. Marion once explained to me that

this dance came from very ancient times, thousands of years ago, and was practised a lot in ancient Egypt.

She also explained to me that it was a sacred dance and was performed on different occasions including religious festivities. The dancers were both men and women and in times of peace they were dancing for the people and in times of war they were warriors.

Unfortunately, today many people perceive belly dancers as prostitutes. The reality is very different. The dance involves discipline, practice, body awareness and expression of emotions and feelings through the body. If that is pornography, then what’s next?

Maybe it’s time for us as human beings to start questioning ourselves when we see something or hear something. We need to ask ourselves: “is what I see pornography, or do I have a pornographic mind?”

During the middle ages every woman who had some skills and was empowered was called a witch and

burned. Are we really very far from that when we criticize a woman who uses her body as a vehicle to express art?

When I was 18 years old I spent a couple of summers working on the Greek island of Mykonos. In the 1980s how it was the “in” thing to visit a couple of famous beaches where people were swimming and lying in the sand naked. I remember my reactions when I first went there. Lots of emotion.

However after a couple of days, I could see people’s bodies and not have any reaction from my mind.

A body is just a body. Like a tree, like a creek, like a mountain. A piece of nature. This is the way we are all born. Have you seen anyone born with clothes?

Clothes and fashion are an invention of the human mind.

All I can say is I hope my midlife crisis is this cool.

Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) hams it up mercilessly and seems to have a lot of fun in his role as the leader of the outlaw gang.

I laughed a lot more than I expected to at the silly situations in Wild Hogs. Be warned, though, some of the antics are offensive and it’s a good bet that the writer of this flic, Brad Copeland, who has written multiple episodes of Arrested Development, and My Name Is Earl, has never been exposed to sensitivity training.

The soundtrack to Wild Hogs could be a lot of fun, as it seems to collect every biker tune that you’ve heard in every other biker movie you’ve ever seen.

Easy Rider this isn’t, but Peter Fonda does make a cool cameo as an aging biker-god near the end.

Arts Council kicks off annual Concert Series Columbia Valley Arts is starting their annual Concert Series a bit earlier this year.

The opportunity of a young, serious, acclaimed and largely local jazz ensemble could not be missed. So, on Thursday, August 30th, comes “Muhledy”!

Muhledy is a bi-national, collective jazz quartet whose members represent a sampling of three of the great music scenes of North America.

Fronted by saxophonist Chris Gale (Toronto), whose blues roots run deep from gigs with Colin James and Blue Rodeo, and it is backed by one of the most exciting young pianists on the Chicago jazz scene, Jordan Baskin.

Invermere’s own Sean Cronin (bass) and Morgan Childs (drums) form the rest of the group.

Cronin and Childs grew up in Invermere and moved to Vancouver to pursue their music careers. They are

both recipients of the Fraser McPherson Jazz Scholarship fund, and have attended the Banff Centre International Jazz Workshop on scholarship.

Most recently, they are recipients of the Galaxie Rising Star Award for the 2007 Vancouver International Jazz Festival (with the Amanda Tosoff band, which will be the next Series concert on October 18th!).

For those not familiar with the Invermere connection, both Morgan and Sean are sons of two of the Valley’s beloved musicians, the well-known Silver Strings Ukulele director Bruce Childs, and the legendary John Cronin.

This is a show not to be missed.

What kind of investor are you?

There is no such thing as a “risk-free” investment.

Investments that provide the opportunity to earn greater returns are usually those that carry a greater element of risk. Your financial and emotional ability to tolerate risk and your investment objectives will help you and your advisor find the investments for you.

Aggressive Investor These investors seek high returns and invest in higher-risk equity investments. International (especially emerging market), specialty equity and equity mutual funds tend to be more aggressive investments.

Generally, the more specialized an equity fund, the more aggressive it is. When investing aggressively, be prepared for swings in the value of your investments.

Assuming you first understand the investment, the more risk you take, the higher your potential return.

Certain high-yield bond funds are good examples of a high-risk investment. The longer you plan to keep your money invested, the more risk you can afford to take.

Medium to aggressive investors Growth-style investors tend to have equity-based portfolios (75 per cent) supplemented by bonds (20 per cent) and short-term instruments (5 per cent).

They also have relatively long investment horizons and are comfortable taking risks to maximize the value of their investment portfolio. Striking the right balance through investing in individual securities can be difficult, even for experienced investors. Medium risk investors Medium risk investors often want to grow their portfolios while providing a steady stream of income.

They also want to protect their nest egg while continu-

Over long periods, however, guaranteed investments have not kept pace with other investments such as equities. In fact, the most you’ll earn is the stated rate of return – no more. Remember that interest rates vary with the term of the guaranteed investment. In most cases, the longer the term, the higher the interest rate.

Farewell from Melinda

My last few weeks as a full-time Invermere resident, and I’m only going to be in Invermere for a few days of them!

After I take a short trip to see my Oma and Opa in Berlin, Germany, it’s off to the University of Calgary, where I will begin my last years (fingers crossed) of education!

The idea that I will be leaving home, and not returning to David Thompson Secondary School, hasn’t hit me yet. The fact that I am going to leave behind my parents and friends is something I don’t like to think about. It feels like I am going to have to start all over again, a thought that both excites, and scares me at the same time.

However, the lessons which I have learned from every person in my life have carried me far, and I know that I will always be able to rely on the knowledge they have shared with me.

That is one of the most beautiful facts about living in a town like

them or not.

I know I will be back every holiday, filling my stomach with home-cooked meals, sleeping quiet nights in my worn-in bed, and reconnecting with people that matter, but it won’t be a regular occurrence any more. I have to break out of this normality.

Who would have thought that the people who time and time again told you: your Grade 12 year will be over before you know it, were actually telling the truth?

I didn’t clue in that the last year of high school was over until I was standing at a podium during grad, reading a Thank You to the Teachers speech. With shaking hands I looked around the crowd and said a silent goodbye.

So here I am, once again saying thank you to everyone who has ever had a part in my childhood, my adolescence, my life. Goodbye to the small town beauty, which for 11 years I have been able to call home.

I look forward to the overwhelming excitement I will feel when I am homeward bound, driving down that last stretch of highway, knowing Invermere is just around the bend.

Invermere. Almost everyone in the town has affected your life, in good ways or bad, but each way always made you better as an individual.

This has been one of my most memorable summers, with afternoons spent relaxing beside the refreshing waters of Kinsmen beach, evenings filled with friends, and too many nights with too little sleep. This is the regular life I will miss in my future adventures.

I know I will enjoy living in the city. Who wouldn’t love the idea of meeting new people, testing out restaurants, and of course, buying everything that my budget will allow?

Learn something new Alexandra Sellers Pynelogs Centre Have you ever wanted to create a silver pendant but you didn’t have the materials or the know-how?

Trezlie Brooks will be teaching a class on Friday, August 17th from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on how to create your own fine silver pendant using precious metal clay.

All supplies are included, and if you need a way to display your piece (possibly a new necklace!) why not take the Secrets of Beading workshop with Pynelogs’ very own Jami Scheffer the following week?

With Jami you will learn the basic tricks of beading to design beaded bracelets, necklaces, anklets, or earrings.

Creating Birch Bark Frames is on August 25 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and the Rustic Armchair Workshop is the following day, August 26 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

so that you can create a second rustic armchair for a matching pair, and if you’ve taken the workshop before you can create a loveseat!

Sunday, September 9th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Norm Turner will be teaching a digital workshop. He goes over all the fundamentals of your particular camera.

He goes into great depth about how to make it work for the needs of your style of photography.

He taught one of these classes a few weekends ago. The group left saying how they would sign up for a second more advanced class if he taught it, and all of them were delighted to go home and test all the new things that they had learned.

Invermere mayor pushing to restructure local government

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff District of Invermere Mayor Mark Shmigelsky has received approval from his council to invite Regional District of East Kootenay Area F Director Lillian Rose and a representative from Canal Flats to a meeting with B.C. Minister of Community Services Ida Chong to discuss restructuring the form of local governance in the Columbia Valley.

Even as Fairmont Hot Springs works toward incorporation, Mr. Shmigelsky is reviving an idea once proposed by former Area F Director Martin Cullen for a unified regional government in the Columbia Valley that would prevent local voters having to seek approval for local initiatives from politicians as far away as Fernie or Sparwood.

“It’s beyond time to do this, but there’s no better time than now,” he said.

“I want to be really clear that this isn’t Invermere looking to extend its boundaries and add another seat at the table. I really want to go to the grass roots with this and throw out the book on where government can go.”

Mayor Shmigelsky said it doesn’t make sense to have five elected officials representing 3,000 residents in Invermere, and just one elected official representing 4,000 residents in Area F. If it means that Invermere loses three seats in government and Area F gains two, he said, then so be it.

He is not one of those politicians who loves the office so much that he is willing to give up his seat for the good of the whole.

“So many people have come up to me in the last few years and asked when we are all going to come together on this,” he commented.

Mayor Shmigelsky said he has the support of the

provincial government if he has the support of the people in Area F. Area F Director Lillian Rose said she looks forward to the discussion and invited voters to call her with their comments.

“This has been on people’s minds for the last 15 years or so,” she said. “We’ve been talking to people about it, but the discussions are really preliminary at this point.”

Director Rose said it is important to include the communities surrounding Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake in a new regional government, since the lakes play such a big part in connecting those communities, but so far, interest has not extended north to the Area G communities of Radium Hot Springs, Edgewater, Brisco and Parson.

Radium Mayor Greg Deck said his municipality is still not interested in joining a Columbia Valley regional government, but that he supports the idea for the communities inside Area F. “It’s something we’ve been supportive of in the past,” he said. “At this point, we would be very interested observers.”

Mr. Shmigelsky said he would like to include all the communities of the Columbia Valley in a system of wards or burroughs, but that including Area F would be a good start.

“I hope people can put aside their past differences to create greater good. We’ve approached Radium in the past, but there hasn’t been any interest,” he said. “I think we have to start in the middle.”

Mayor Shmigelsky said he will seek provincial support for governmental restructuring in the Columbia Valley at the annual conference of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities in Victoria in September. If the results are favorable, he said, talks and workshops can begin in ernest.

Valley accidents keep Emergency Services busy Continued from Page 5 • August 9: At 12:05 p.m., RCMP and B.C. Ambulance crews responded to a motorcycle accident that occurred on Highway 93/95 at Stoddart Creek Road.

The female driver of the motorcycle clipped the back end of a left turning pickup truck that had stopped for traffic. The motorcycle went over on its side causing the driver to slide along the pavement.

BC Ambulance transported the motorcyclist to Invermere hospital with a broken elbow. There was no damage to the pickup, nor did its driver sustain any injuries.

• August 9: At 8:30 p.m., RCMP responded to a report of a crash that occurred in Fairmont Hot Springs.

Police learned that one driver was following a red pickup truck in Fairmont when the vehicle stopped and backed up because there was a bear in view.

This red pickup truck backed into

the one behind it, which caused minor damage to its left front turn signal. The driver of the red truck apparently exited his vehicle, returned to the one he struck and told that vehicle’s driver he was lucky if he doesn’t get “beaten up.”

However, both drivers exchanged particulars and telephone numbers and RCMP are following up on the matter with them.

• August 10: At 6:40 a.m., RCMP were called to the scene of a single motor vehicle collision on 13th Avenue and 15th Street, Invermere.

A resident heard a vehicle hit a power pole in front of their house. RCMP learned from the driver of the car that he was rushing to go to work when he lost control on the wet roads and slid off the road.

BC Hydro was contacted to determine that pole was safe.

The driver was issued a provincial Motor Vehicle Act Violation Ticket for Speeding Relative to Road and Weather Conditions.

Local business owners may want to head up to Golden on Tuesday, August 21st from 1 to 3:30 p.m. to find out how to hire foreign workers in the Columbia Valley.

As the labour shortage worsens, many employers are considering bringing in staff from outside the country but are unsure how to begin.

Jim Abbott, Member of Parliament for KootenayColumbia, has invited representatives from Citizenship and Immigration, Human Resources and Social Development Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, B. C. Ministry of Economic Development, and the B. C. Labour Standards Branch to present a seminar on the subject.

Having a woodshop can create a lot of o cuts and scrap wood.

Being of Scottish descent, I ďŹ nd it diďŹƒcult to throw these pieces away unless they are rendered completely useless. Even then, I will use them as kindling or bonďŹ re wood.

S’mores anyone? Another leftover you might ďŹ nd yourself with are spare tiles from a reno job. I put these two leftovers together to create a great little gift project.

The tile can be substituted for a wood panel but a pretty tile creates a lovely tray. For this project I began by cutting 3/4-inch wood into 2inch strips. Once you have enough 2-inch strips for the four sides of your tray or frame take the wood back to the table saw and make a 1/4-inch dado a 1/4-inch from the bottom edge of the frame.

This measurement will vary according to the thickness of your panel or tile. To create the dado, I simply cut a blade thickness (1/8inch) 3/8-inch deep and, after moving the fence 1/4-inch closer, I ran

the wood through the saw again, thus creating a 1/4-inch dado.

This process can also be done with a router bit or a dado blade but, for such a small project, the table saw was easier and quicker to set up.

Cut the 2-inch strips longer than needed and, using a miter saw, cut a 45-degree angle on one end.

Cut a 45-degree angle for the adjacent side and ďŹ t the two together. This will allow you to determine the length for each side. Cut all pieces at 45 degrees and check for ďŹ t.

For the handles, I used a 5/8inch spade bit and drilled two holes 4 inches apart on center.

To ďŹ nish the handle, use a jig saw to connect the holes. This will give a nice handle and can be sanded smooth by wrapping sandpaper around a dowel.

At this point, you should stain

the wood and allow it to dry before assembly.

Once the ďŹ nish is dry, you can glue and pin nail the corners with the tile in place. This is all the reinforcement needed for a small frame. If you want to make a larger frame or tray you may require splines to reinforce the corners.

Now that the tray is assembled, depending on the panel material, you might want to glue felt to the underside to ďŹ nish o the tray.

This is a very versatile project and makes a great gift. You can shop around for tiles to suit the occasion, such as a shower gift, or ďŹ nd one to complement your home dĂŠcor. It can be used as a tray and it works quite nicely hung on a wall.

It is with great sadness that we wish to announce the passing of Sheila Sheran Jefferson. Born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan on April 25, 1955, she passed away suddenly on July 24, 2007.

Sheila and her family moved to the Invermere area in 1961.

In 1962 the family moved to Fruitvale where they stayed until 1968 when they came back to Invermere. Sheila is predeceased by her father George, and nephews, Cory, Brent, Adian and Troy. She is survived by her loving husband Brian, children, Janet (Ron), Jonathon (Kim), 2 grandchildren, Jayden and Jager, her mother Sarah Hallett, her sisters Maryanne, Leila, June, her brothers, Russell, Gordon, Gary (Sherri), Larry, and many, many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank everyone for all their kindness during this time of sorrow. To all the people who brought food, flowers and sent cards. To all the ones that were there to help us through this terrible time, a Big Thank You. Condolences for family and friends may be posted at www.mcphersonfh.com.

Words that bless

By Associate Pastor Linda Paradis Radium Christian Fellowship It has just been over a month that our son and his fianceé were married; the last of our three children to be wed.

Now that all of our children were married, I had a feeling of completeness, but not without reflecting on how we raised them.

We did what we could to bring them up in the training and the admonition of the Lord according to Ephesians 6:4. Yet as all of us who have raised a family know that we are not given a guarantee that all will work out well; and it is only by God’s grace that we are able to endure the many challenges that a family goes through.

A few years ago I attended The Ancient Path Seminar and I was quite amazed to discover that one of the primary job descriptions for parents is to bless their children . . . a concept that I had read about in the Old Testament but never gave it much thought until the day of this seminar.

An old saying we heard a lot and most likely even said it ourselves as kids was: “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”

What a bag of lies! All of us can remember the powerful sting of some hurtful words that pierced

deep into our spirit.

Yet what is so incredible is that unless we have been able to forgive that person who spoke those hurtful words to us we can still remember the feelings it caused us to have as though it just happened.

Why is that? I believe it is because what Proverbs 18:21 says: “Death and Life are in the power of the tongue.”

Are you still dying inside from hurtful words that were spoken to you? Or maybe you are feeling remorseful over a hurtful word you spoke to your own children, your spouse or a dear friend.

We do not have to stay in that place of sorrow.

There is a very powerful phrase that can bring tremendous healing from those hurtful words; they are: “I am sorry, please forgive me. Or I forgive you.”

It sounds easy, but it can be a hard thing to do. I have been there myself many times, so I speak from experience.

What we need to do following our apologizing and forgiving, is to replace those hurtful words with words of blessings.

Remember Proverbs 18 also said the tongue has the power of life; words of blessings bring life with them. Our words of blessings can make a person feel respected, honored, valued and loved.

Please remember no matter how you came to be you are not an accident or an intrusion, you are wanted and needed.

Our heavenly Father has an assignment that only you can fulfill; I now encourage you to discover your God-given destiny and remember you are blessed - so go now, and be a blessing.

At The Library Divisadero by Michael Ondaatje Reviewed by Sheila Bonny Michael Ondaatje’s Divisadero moves forwards and backwards in time exploring the nature of family through the lives of three contemporary Americans and an early 20th-century French writer.

Anne, Claire and Coop are motherless siblings by adoption raised by a widower on a Californian farm. When the girls are 16, an incident of passion and violence tears the family apart and estranges Anne and Coop from their father.

Later snapshots portray Claire as a legal assistant, Coop as a professional poker player and Anne as historical researcher in France, their lives linked

only by memories.

Suddenly, the story shifts to the life of Lucien Segura, a French poet and novelist whose life Anne is researching. Like the Americans, Segura yearns for an unattainable ideal family. He finds himself feeling more paternal towards a neighbour boy than towards his own daughters.

A reader will enjoy Ondaatje’s exquisitely sensuous, moving prose, but will be surprised to find Divisadero a series of tenuously linked life events, rather than a traditional novel. It doesn’t provide a predictable resolution of the characters’ problems.

Rather, the reader is challenged to wrestle with the nature of family in these lives. Is family found or genetically determined? Can we ever leave family behind?
