NEW HOMES Your Guide to New Housing Developments in the Columbia Valley

Copper Point Resort Business Feature by Sandra Kelly If you’re a golfer who’s been to Invermere, you’ve most certainly enjoyed a round or two at Copper Point Golf Club, the picture-perfect 18-hole course on the east side of Lake Windermere. Now you can play and stay—at the luxurious new Copper Point Resort. The four-storey, 107-condo resort is taking shape on six scenic acres at the crossroads of Invermere and Highway 93. It will be a first-class resort, offering both a recreational lifestyle and a secure investment to its owners. Whole or quarter-share ownership of suites is available, and sales are brisk. “We are over eighty percent sold, but we are fortunate to still be able to offer one, two and three-bedroom units in several different views and price ranges,” says general manager Rose Marie Regitnig. Late summer is the targeted date for the resort’s grand opening. In the meantime, the Copper Point Golf Club has doubled in size with the opening of the brand new 18-hole Ridge course. An underground tunnel below Highway 93 connects the two courses. They share the original clubhouse. Both courses are meticulously groomed. The scenery is spectacular. With its innovative Par 62 masters-style design, the Ridge represents the future of golf. There are no long par 5s to contend with, and water comes into play on only two holes. Sand traps are prominent, though: every hole features at least one strategically placed bunker to avoid. The Ridge can be played in less than four hours and is ideal for walkers, juniors, seniors, beginners and family golf.

Copper Point Resort, now under construction, located on six acres near the Invermere crossroads.

Young professionals seeking cottages The country’s recreational property market is returning to a more normal state, with price increases moderating compared to the frenetic pace experienced in 2007. This moderating trend bodes well for cottage seekers – particularly young professionals, who make up the single largest group of those planning or considering a cottage purchase (19 percent), according to the 2008 Royal LePage Recreational Property Report. The report comprises a nationwide research poll of Canadian cottage owner and buyer attitudes. The survey showed that Canadians overwhelmingly see the benefit of owning real estate. Nearly twothirds (61 percent) of cottage owners and those who plan on buying a recreational property feel that buying a cottage is a better long-term investment than buying stocks, bonds or mutual funds. In fact, the survey revealed that 15 percent of recreational property owners own more than one second home. A little more than half (54 percent) of cottagecraving Canucks, who are planning to buy a recreational property, have budgeted between $50,000 and $300,000. Some buyers will have to do a lot of searching to find their wilderness retreat, as 33 percent of these respondents said they were looking to spend less than $50,000.

Putting the brakes on heading to the cottage: The lure of the great outdoors and promise of rest and relaxation continue to trump rising gas prices, increased traffic congestion, and a changing real estate climate, as the number of Canadian cottage owners has remained steady over the past three years, at nine percent. However, reason (and a need to mind the bank account) is likely to outweigh passion this summer, as 19 percent of cottage owners stated they would consider selling their properties if gas prices continue to rise; an increase of seven percent since last summer. The poll also found that 33 percent of recreational property owners said rising gas prices would impact the number of trips they take to the cottage this summer. On the flip side, local cottage rentals could see a spike in activity this summer, as rising fuel prices keep some families from flying to their summer vacation destinations. Summer lovin’ replaced with summer siestas: For cottage-owners, once known for their boundless levels of energy come Friday at 5 p.m., a startling truth has now come to light: once at the cottage, their fire seems to flicker out. When it comes to activities at the cottage, a dramatic 45 percent of cottage owners would rather catch up on sleep, than have a ‘romantic liaison’ with their partner.

It’s little surprise that catching up on sleep at the cottage is placed at a premium: for some cottage-goers, rest and relaxation will be hard to come by, as 16 percent of respondents claim they will continue to work from the cottage. • When asked, “How do you plan to unplug yourself from the wired work world while enjoying your recreational property,” the top two responses included: there won’t be Internet access at the cottage (24 percent); and I won’t take my Blackberry or cell to the cottage (17 percent). • Among cottage owners, and those who plan to buy, 11 percent will spend more on their vacation property, than on their primary residence; 35 percent plan to spend between $50,000 and $150,000.

Here are the top 10 features looked for: 1. Pristine waterfront 2. Four-season capability 3. Low maintenance 4. Proximity to primary residence 5. Surrounding amenities (restaurants, stores, etc.) 6. Number of bedrooms 7. Large kitchen 8. High-end amenities 9. Great room 10. Wine cellar

Absence of traffic valley’s biggest plus By Elinor Florence Pioneer Publisher There’s one selling point for living in the Columbia Valley which usually fails to make it onto the list of attractions. In my view it is by far the best thing about living here: the lack of traffic. When my family first moved here from Vancouver, we were practically delerious with joy at the idea of being at our destination within 10 minutes. I drove through 49 traffic lights and across two bridges to get to my old job. Here it takes mere minutes, and I can pop home for lunch. The number of traffic lights in the entire valley can be counted on one hand. It is bliss. No driving around searching for a parking spot. No bumper-tobumper lineups, road rage, fender-benders and other annoyances which account for a large amount of grinding stress. When we moved here, the sponta-

neity magically returned to our lives. Hey, let’s grab a bite to eat! Five minutes later we are in a restaurant. Let’s go to the movie at The Toby! Ten minutes later we’re sitting in our seats, popcorn in hand. The kids need to be picked up at a friend’s house? Get your coats on, we’ll be right there. Even the longer commutes – to ski at Panorama, or swim at Fairmont, for example – take a maximum 30 minutes. The strange thing was how quickly the city wore off. Within a few months we were so accustomed to the lack of driving that we could barely tolerate going to Calgary. Today if the parking lot at Sobeys is busy, we, like other locals, complain about traffic jams. You may think it’s funny, but after you live here a short time I promise you will feel the same. Traffic is a vile condition, foreign to human nature. Nothing makes me happier than living without.

It’s not about the journey to your destination, but how you feel when you arrive. Experience this feeling in one of the inviting alpine styled townhomes or luxury bungalow villas of Borrego Ridge in Radium Hot Springs, BC—North America’s most sought after recreational mountain resort. Choose from a villa or townhome, to fullfill your recreational mountain home dream.
