NEW HOMES Your Guide to New Housing Developments in the Columbia Valley

Bighorn Meadows Business Feature by Sandra Kelly

Lounge by the pool, or visit the hot tub and steam room at Bighorn Meadows in Radium.

Over the course of its development, Bighorn Meadows Resort has had several show suites, each one so well appointed that the sales staff barely had time to show it before it sold. That’s because the popular resort in Radium Hot Springs consistently offers a quality product in a stunning location. The latest show suite continues the tradition. It’s a spacious three-bedroom unit with a “lock-off” guest suite situated on the first floor of a new three-storeyplus-lofts building. The Phase 9 building has elevator service, Bighorn’s first heated underground parkade (for the exclusive use of occupants), and lovely views of the Purcell Mountains and the 9th fairway of The Springs golf course. The building is upgraded from previous phases of the development, but the show suite is finished to Bighorn’s usual high standard: solid fir doors and mouldings, ledgestone, quality Berber, granite, maple and fine furnishings. “We don’t show a down product and then talk about upgrades,” says sales representative Nancy Atwood. “We want our buyers to see the high quality they’ll be getting.” To celebrate the opening of the new building, Bighorn is offering a quarter share (12-14 weeks per year) on an 865-square-foot one-bedroom unit, for just $99,900. It’s a time-limited offer. The next building to go up at Bighorn (Phase 10) will be four storeys tall, and will contain ten suites plus the resort’s amenities centre: a water park, a hot tub, a steam room, a sandwich bar, and rooms for meetings and exercise. The final two phases of the resort are in the conceptual stage. There are five options for ownership: one-and-ahalf-week fractional title, three-week fractional title, eighth-share title, quarter-share title and whole ownership (four quarter shares). Prices start at $17,900. Continued on Page 3

Continued from Page 1 Because all the suites are deeded and titled, you own your share while earning equity on your investment. Ask about customized ownership programs. Bighorn has a professionally managed rental pool to help buyers service their debt. And, the resort’s membership in Interval International gives you access to 2,500 other luxurious resorts worldwide. Thanks to interior designer April Trapp, the décor in every suite is stunning. The ledgestone fireplace— with room above for a 42” television—will keep you warm and cozy. Every suite comes fully furnished and stocked with necessities such as dishes and linens. All the units are spacious and have such features as walkout balconies from the living room and master bedroom, high-end furnishings, and lock-off suites for the enjoyment—and privacy—of friends and family. This is luxurious, hassle-free living far from the stresses and strains of urban life. From the resort, it is a scenic stroll to the middle of friendly Radium Hot Springs, and only a short drive to Lake Windermere. Radium has a cozy village atmosphere, with great shops and restaurants, and of course the famed hot pools. The show suite is open seven days a week, yearround. Parking is available at the entrance to the resort, and outside the building containing the show suite. Real estate brings out the crazy side in us By Sandra Kelly Pioneer Columnist Does real estate make you crazy? If so, you’re not alone. Any realtor or builder will tell you that buying and building houses brings out the nut bar in all of us. Real estate actually makes me delusional. I can’t count the number of times I’ve idled past a pretty building lot, imagining how my dream house will look on it. In time, I actually start to think of the land as mine, as if I’ve written the cheque and am just waiting for Land Titles to issue the certificate. When I see the “Sold” sticker on the realtor’s sign, I’m confused. Real estate makes me obsessive. Once, when designing a house, I wasted a hundred hours trying to get an exterior door and an interior archway to align. In my increasingly mad mind, they had

to face one another directly across a big room, because surely people would notice the disparity. When the house was finished, not one person commented on their splendid symmetry. Real estate makes me stupidly happy. What fun it is to shop for taps and tiles and lights. Planning a new home or renovation can keep me in a state of nirvana for a year or more. But, after I move into the house I realize it was the process of building it that made me happy. The house is almost beside the point. Here are a few signs that real estate is making you crazy: You’ve shed tears over a property you can’t afford; you’ve shopped for carpet for three months and can’t choose; you hate your door hinges because they’re too “chromey”; your new house is finished, and you’re so bored you’re actually considering a career in real estate. Now, that’s crazy!

Tone-blind designer learns about colour By Sandra Kelly Pioneer Columnist After 20 years of building homes for myself and for clients, you’d think I would know a thing or two about colour tones. Apparently not. I learned a harsh lesson about tone recently, which I won’t have to learn again. When the laminate flooring I wanted for my house wasn’t available, I opted for a pre-finished maple hardwood. To my apparently tone-blind eyes, the stain on the expensive wood appeared to have a cinnamon tone. Over 1,200 square feet it revealed its true tone—a hideous dark orange. Or, as one friend aptly described it, “Tomato soup with attitude.” It doesn’t match the other cinnamonstained woods in the house, or provide enough contrast to be interesting. It’s been my experience that tone is the one area where we all get into trouble. When choosing finishing materials,

we tend to focus on texture. We get distracted by the rough finish on a tile and the cotton-like knap of a carpet. Tone takes a backseat. Tone trouble usually begins with paint. If you’re using two or more paint colors in your house, always pick them off the same paint card. That way, the greens you’ve chosen will have the same tone. It doesn’t matter that you love mint green and sage green: what’s important is that they love one another. If you want to mix and match colors, be sure to test them side-by-side. Even then, be aware that because they’ll be the only colors in the house at that point, they’ll probably look terrific. At the drywall stage of building, any color is a relief. But will they look good after all the finishing work is done? When in doubt, consult an interior designer. When it comes to matching tones, they’re worth their weight in gold . . . and green . . . and brown . . .
