Started by Calgary architect Wade Gibbs, wife Patricia, daughter Kim and son Christopher, the Gibbs family has spent four years assembling and getting approvals for their dream development, named after a herd of deer that wintered on the property. Evergreen trees delight the senses, add value By Pioneer Staff One of the best aspects of living in the Columbia Valley is the year-round presence of green trees. The lush, thickly-needled evergreen trees that cover the mountainsides make the valley seem like an oasis, even on a winter’s day. A stand of mature trees on your property will guarantee the presence of green throughout the year, so before you decide to remove the trees in order to see more of the view, think long and hard. Trees cast a lovely shade in the heat of summer, and can help to keep your house cool, reducing the need for expensive air conditioning. They can also break the force of the wind, which can be gusty here in the valley. Trees provide a natural sound barrier if you are in a noisy area, or one that might become more developed in the future. The sound of the wind sighing the treetops is a magical backdrop to your soothing sleep. Trees attract birds and other small
animals like squirrels. Hang a few bird feeders around your property and marvel at the number and variety of birds on your yard. Keep a pair of binoculars and a bird book on your windowsill to increase your enjoyment. Overall, the planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion here in the valley. The good news is that the pine beetle scourge, which is laying waste to other parts of Western Canada, will not have as great an effect here because of our mixed forest. Beetles burrow under the bark and lay their eggs on lodgepole pine trees. Other varieties of trees are unaffected. There is one drawback to having trees right up against the house, though, and that is the danger of fire. For safety reasons, trees must be cleared away from the house to a distance of 10 metres on all sides. But with proper landscaping, experts say that trees can increase property values as much as 10 percent.
