By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. The 19th annual Columbia Valley Classics Car Show and Shine is arriving today. Hundreds of car enthusiasts from near and far have travelled to Radium Hot Springs to show off their classic cars, which will be on display at the Radium Resort Springs Golf Course driving range. Sunny skies are expected for the event, which will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday with a pancake breakfast being put on by the Radium Fire Department at the Radium Seniors Hall. The actual Show and Shine, which registered an astonishing 739 cars last year, begins at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to admire the beautifully restored relics. There will be a beer garden put on by the Radium Rotary Club on site at the car show. For those who can’t make it to the actual show at The Springs, there will be an old-fashioned cruise at 4 p.m. This will begin at The Springs golf resort, then move left onto Columbia Avenue, right onto Forsters Landing Road, and then onto Highway 93/95 towards Invermere. The cars will undoubtedly become mixed in with civilian traffic, but once they reach Invermere they are expected to drive past the hospital on 10th

Avenue around 4:30 p.m. The cruise is not sanctioned by the Columbia Valley Car Club and RCMP Staff-Sergeant Doug Pack reminds motorists that the show is about the cars, not the engines. “In some other parts of North America, there have been avoidable tragedies where cars have careened into crowds of people because irresponsible drivers tried to demonstrate their car’s performance,” he said. “The planning for this year’s event is trying to avoid such a calamity from happening here.” Following the cruise, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., there will be a dance held at the Invermere Curling Club featuring Kenny and the Cruisers. Tickets will be available for purchase at the car show and the cost will be $20. There will also be a free bus running every 15 minutes from the car show in Radium to the dance, so please do not drink and drive. Registration for the owners of the vehicles will be held on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Radium Seniors Hall. At the same time, the Dry Gulch Ramblers will perform musical entertainment on Main Street West. Everyone is welcome and free popcorn will be provided! For more information, call the Radium Chamber at 250-347-9331 or Columbia Valley Chamber at 250-342-2844.

Kenny and the Cruisers to croon at car show By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Rockin’ the night of the Classic Show & Shine will be veteran musicians Kenny and the Cruisers. Based in Cranbrook, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Kenny Payne said that their concerts in the Columbia Valley are some of the best. “Invermere is always our favourite place to play at,” Kenny said. “We always have a good time.” For 18 of the car show’s 19 years, Kenny and his band have provided the evening’s tunes. “It’s grown so much. It’s a neat place to play,” he said. The Cruisers has six members: Kenny; Bud DeCosse on lead guitar; Ken Bibby on piano; Dean Archibald on

saxophone; Dennis Brons on drums; and Greg Brons on bass. They have been playing together for nine years, travelling to towns such as Lethbridge, Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House, and Sandpoint, Idaho. Kenny is retired now and he has been playing in bands for 51 years. Before the Cruisers, he was a member of country band Northwind. In the 1970s and ‘80s, he played in City Limits. But Kenny revealed that the Cruisers will be disbanding at the end of the year. “There comes a time when you need to take a breath,” he said. Come and hear their catchy ‘50s and ‘60s sound at the car show dance on Saturday, September 20th at Radium Seniors Hall. Admission is $20 and it includes a buffet.
