Gas shortage strands tourists

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Visitors to Fairmont Hot Springs enjoyed an extra day in paradise Tuesday, after a gas shortage left a number of people unable to leave the valley.

Both gas stations in Fairmont – Fairmont Gas Plus and the Hoodoos Race Trac Gas station – were completely dry over the long weekend, leaving tourists running on empty.

“We ran out of gas at 7:30 p.m. on Monday because we were the only ones that had it,” said Bonnie Thornton, manager of Fairmont Gas Plus. “We went through three time more fuel than normal. We have eight pumps and they were continuously running and we still had people lined up to the highway – so you can do the math.”

After they ran out, Bonnie said that they had to turn away at least two or three cars every couple of minutes. Many customers, she added, were “cheesed” that the station had run out of fuel, while others were panicky because they didn’t know what to do.

18th that shut down the Petro-Canada and Imperial Oil refineries in Edmonton. Although both refineries were restarted last week, companies are still struggling to catch up. Throughout the past two weeks, gas stations all over Alberta have also experienced shortages, and there is no definite date as to when the current

demand for gas will be satisfied.

At the Hoodoos Race Trac Gas, manager Scott Powell said the station ran out of gas at noon Saturday and didn’t receive a shipment of fuel until the middle of the night on Monday. But he didn’t think that would last long, since he saw between 400 people and 600 people looking for fuel on Monday alone.

“I know there’s a heck of a shortage,” Scott said.

“I’m sure this load of fuel will last me for another two days, and then I will be out again.”

But the fuel shortage wasn’t bad for Columbia Valley businesses, as staff were run off their feet Tuesday trying to keep up with the massive crowds still lingering in the community.

The Smoking Water Café in Fairmont was one of those businesses – they noted record sales on Tuesday.

“It was the biggest weekend we’ve ever had and today just topped it off,” said Steph Clovechok, owner of the café. “We were full of people not being able to go home – a coffee shop is a great place to hang out when you’re stranded.”

Steph said that she spoke to one couple Tuesday who was still waiting to make it out of the valley. “This was a couple who have been frequenting the café and they were just hanging out on the patio,” she said.

“They told me: ‘There’s no gas and we’re not going to fight for it, we’re just going to go with the flow.’”

According to Marion Garden, Marketing Coordinator at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, all 138 rooms at the resort were fully booked over the weekend.

Search and Rescue crew back to work

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Columbia Valley Search and Rescue crews have been scrambling to cover two areas for the last month, since their Golden counterparts went on strike on June 11th.

Since then, Columbia Valley Search and Rescue has responded to seven calls, including one in Golden.

“On July 13th, we responded to an incident near the Yoho National Park boundary,” said Steve Talsma, manager of the Columbia Valley Search and Rescue Society.

But August is looking up. On July 27th, Golden Search and Rescue resumed operations for back country emergencies.

“We have gone back to taking search and rescue calls, but we are still inactive on highway rescue as

we do not have insurance for that,” said Kyle Hale, a volunteer with Golden Search and Rescue.

The move comes after the B.C. Search and Rescue Association met with the Provincial Emergency Program on July 16th to draft a proposal for insurance and funding. “They are trying to come up with a province-wide funding source to cover everyone,” said Steve Talsma.

Smaller search and rescue groups, Steve explained, can’t afford to purchase their own liability insurance. This insurance is what protects the societies when the provincial program does not.

The new provincial policy is expected to be adopted on September 1st, but Kyle Hale said the policy must be put into effect within two months.

“Several search and rescue organizations have given the province a 60-day window in which to come up with a definitive regulation,” he said.

The question of liability insurance for search and

rescue societies in B.C. arose in May when Quebec skier Gilles Blackburn filed a lawsuit against Golden Search and Rescue. In February, his wife Marie-Josée Fortin died of hypothermia after nine days lost in the back country near Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

After the lawsuit was filed, Golden Search and Rescue Society discovered that the Provincial Emergency Program did not provide liability insurance.

They ceased operations on June 11th and were followed by several other B.C. search and rescue groups. Members of Columbia Valley Search and Rescue voted to continue operating, although they wrote to the province to support Golden’s actions.

Golden’s return to work is a step in the right direction. “Things are changing for the better,” Steve said. “There have been a lot of positive things come from this, but unfortunately Golden Search and Rescue are still going through the lawsuit.”

SPECIAL THIS WEEK:

• On July 29th at 9:30 p.m., Columbia Valley Detachment members attended a disturbance complaint at the Redstreak Campground in Radium. The disturbance involved campers that were near each other where a verbal argument became loud. No assaults were reported. Police calmed the situation down and requested the campers simply stay away from each other. It was noted that liquor was involved.

• On July 30th at 6:11 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a complaint of a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 being stolen from the driveway of a residence in Radium. The vehicle was left unlocked, keys in the ignition and valuable equipment inside the vehicle. Fortunately, the vehicle was located approximately nine hours later, 15 kilometres south of Golden. Sgt. Shehovac would like to note that Christmas is still 144 sleeps away, and we should wait a little longer before providing such opportunities to our criminals.

• On July 31st at 8:30 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment received a report of damage to a lawn on Upper Lakeview Road after a vehicle drove onto the lawn.

• Between July 24th and 29th, a stereo was stolen from a boat docked at the Windermere community dock.

• On August 2nd at 1:36 a.m., detachment members responded to a disturbance on Panorama Drive involving a number of people renting a condo. The disturbance was fuelled by liquor consumption and when Panorama security attempted to deal with the issue, the people were uncooperative. However, they did cooperate when police arrived.

• On August 2nd at 7 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of a break-and-enter and theft of a storage shed at the Windermere Valley Golf Course. The theft happened overnight. A small quantity of food items were stolen.

1st to 4th, 2008, Columbia Valley detachment recorded 70 complaints for calls for service, compared to 35 complaints this year.

I continue to believe that the economic times and sudden halt of the construction boom experienced last year has, and continues to have, an impact on the calls for service to which the detachment would normally respond.

Recorded statistics for July 2008 was 403 complaints, compared to 257 complaints for July 2009.

Members of the RCMP who were here last year also comment that to date, this summer has not been as busy as last year.

From my visits to town over the weekend and having difficulty finding a parking space, I feel that the number of visitors has not dropped and I hope the business community is doing well.

It is possible that the party atmosphere or opportunity has decreased with the downward population in the transient workers that took advantage of the construction boom. Word hard, party hard.

The other impact is the fact that many young people who would like to take advantage of the summer are finding jobs hard to come by and have had to remain behind to find whatever job they could secure to prepare themselves financially for school come September. Put those two equations together and the detachment sees a decline in complaints.

However, we still have August to look forward to.

It ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings! By saying this I may have cursed us. In the police world we stay away from saying the “quiet” word. When a police officer accidentally uses this word among his or her peers, they get the, “Why did you have to say that?” look. All hell breaks loose once the Q word is spoken.

This weekend, the officers dealt with a number of common themes: assaults, disturbances, mischief, theft from vehicles and liquor offenses. Only one accident was reported.

A number of traffic officers from Cranbrook spent a considerable amount of time in the national park, enforcing the speed limit. This high visibility tends to keep the traffic at a safe pace.

So in conclusion, my prediction for August is that it should be pretty quiet!

The other headline I was thinking of sending the press was “New Detachment Commander makes impact in reducing crimes in the valley,” but I don’t think I can get away with that one!

Glacier-Howser ‘ruin-of-river’ project nixed by area directors

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff The Glacier-Howser project is not welcome in the Regional District of East Kootenay, according to the board’s Columbia Valley directors.

The five directors from this area were appointed to a select committee to decide the regional district’s stance on the controversial power project, planned in the Purcell Mountains, near Meadow Creek.

On June 22nd, Area F director Wendy Booth, Area G director Gerry Wilkie, Invermere mayor Gerry Taft, Radium mayor Dee Conklin and Canal Flats councillor Ute Juras met in Invermere to discuss the proposal.

“We took a very high-level look at the concept of the project and the transmission line and concluded that it is not necessary or required for the area,” said Mayor Taft.

“We all read the information provided to us and assessed the project based on the pros and cons for the Columbia Valley. It was unanimous in the opposition of it,” said Mayor Conklin.

The select committee will send its recommendation to the entire board for a decision on Friday, August 7th.

If the motion passes, a letter will be sent to the provincial Environmental Assessment Office, advising it that the regional district does not support the Glacier-Howser project.

The motion says the committee opposes the proj-

ect for the following reasons: “1) the proposed transmission line will impact high-value forests; 2) the environmental impacts outweigh the economic benefits; and 3) the power that would be generated is not required in the Upper Columbia Valley.”

The Environmental Assessment Office held a series of open houses in June regarding the proposed run-of-river project, which would include a 92-kilometre transmission line across the Purcell Mountains to Invermere’s BC Hydro substation.

The Invermere meeting drew about 80 protesters. The discussion touched on issues such as damage to old-growth forest, the negative impact on the fish population, the privatization of power, and how the creeks would be monitored if the project goes ahead.

Present at that open house was Jim Galloway, a director of Wildsight’s Invermere branch. He is ecstatic that local government is behind him.

“This is wonderful news and I commend the select committee on their recommendation,” Mr. Galloway said. “The Glacier-Howser project was never really run-of-the-river; it was river diversion. I am very happy they are making this recommendation.”

Another opponent, Lynn Askey, gives the directors a pat on the back.

“I am delighted to hear that the regional district is standing up against the Glacier-Howser ‘ruin-of-river’ project,” Lynn said.

The Environmental Assessment Office’s comment period for this project has now closed. The office is considering the proposal before it makes a decision.

Stop driving us crazy

So you’re in a rush to get to the lake, and who can blame you? The beach beckons, and on a good day, you can make it either to your cabin or to your home in three hours: one of the selling features of the valley as opposed to Kelowna or Grand Forks, or one of those far-off destinations.

Parks Canada maintains a darned good highway, for the most part as smooth and flat as a mountain road can be. So it’s tempting to keep trying to break your old 2.5-hour record.

But here’s our annual plea to slow down: • By passing other vehicles multiple times you’re probably not saving more than a few moments, and you’re scaring the heck out of everyone else.

• You may be a skilled driver with a reliable vehicle, but those around you may not share your Mario Andretti-like reflexes. Other drivers are unpredictable, and you can’t count on them staying in their own lane and doing what they’re supposed to do.

• The national parks are home to thousands of wild animals, many of whom like to wander or dart across the highway unexpectedly. You may think you’re in control, but a split-second later you might find your vehicle crashing into a deer or a bear or a wolf.

• You’re spoiling your own enjoyment of the drive.

People come from all over the world to cruise our national parks, marvelling at the beauty of the rugged peaks and roadsides filled with wildflowers, not to mention a glimpse of the aforesaid wild creatures. We spent 15 minutes last week admiring a black bear and two adorable cubs, while other vehicles whizzed past us, oblivious to this rare opportunity.

Finally, this plea applies equally to people who live here in the valley and who are trying to break the 2.5hour record to Calgary. In spite of all the anecdotal evidence, I can see absolutely no difference in the quality of driving between B.C. and Alberta drivers.

What is their big hurry?

Dear Editor: I would like to add my family’s voice to those who also witness the ridiculous speeding and insane passing that routinely happens on Highway 93, from Castle Junction to Radium and Fairmont.

The outright stupidity we see time and time again on this roadway is criminal and must be stopped.

I can’t go over all the serious incidents I have been involved in. I can only conclude that the big guy up there has decided on those occasions to let my family live a little longer.

What is their hurry all about?

I’ve talked to Radium and Invermere RCMP and they are well aware of the situation but indicate their shift assignments do not adequately cover this road. They recommend I do what I’m doing, as well as contact their supervisors. Perhaps more people need to do this.

They also indicate that most of the bad drivers are from Calgary, which might be true, but irrelevant to the problem.

I challenge other sane drivers to take up the cause.

Don’t take your eyes off Gordon Campbell Dear Editor: Gordon Campbell must be a “Friedmanite” – that’s what I call followers of Milton Friedman, the messiah Nobel Prize-winning U.S. economist who gained popularity when times were good with his signature “privatize everything!”

His logic was that the efficiency of privatization will ensure rapturous prosperity of such magnitude that excess wealth will spill over and trickle down to the working class.

The senile goat died before seeing the economic crisis he helped create.

How would he have explained the billions in private-sector bailouts by the working-class public sector?

He grossly underestimated corporate greed, corruption and gluttony, with spillover ending up as management bonuses.

Campbell’s privatization missions began when he tore up signed nurses’ contracts, a step in eroding our medical system to make privatization appealing.

Next, the province-owned B.C. Rail was dumped, another scandalous Gordon Campbell stunt that reeks of political and corporate impropriety.

Simultaneously, BC Hydro was being stealthily dismantled and neutral-

ized in the plan to transfer control to private industry.

The closet deal to allow private corporations to exploit hundreds of B.C. rivers was the most treasonous, slimiest, most fraudulent wholesale attempt at a sell-off of public assets in Canadian history. It illustrates how weak or corrupt governments allow themselves to be manipulated by corporate lobbyists.

Gordon Campbell’s attempts to deceive British Columbians into believing we don’t produce enough power to meet our needs, that only private corporations can save us, is another Gordon Campbell lie!

BC Hydro has always provided the citizens of B.C. with cheap power, essentially for the cost of its production.

Why look elsewhere?

If we need more power, BC Hydro can deliver it, plus we can trust them!

Can we say the same of Gordon Campbell and his backroom corporate bedfellows? Get involved and rid British Columbia of the most inept, corrupt, psychopathic self-interest government in our history.

Raised crosswalks, handicapped parking waste of tax money Dear Editor: It seems to me you should write an article on the waste of public money for raised crosswalks and the new handicapped parking spaces that have, all of a sudden, popped up all over the place in Invermere.

It certainly has made driving into town to do business a whole lot of trouble.

I’m hoping that council is going to put in water troughs and hitching

rails when I ride in for the couple of days to do my shopping.

The town already has enough speed bumps on all the streets, with the number of old trench lines and pot holes. Ooh, those repairs aren’t in the budget!

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Things are looking up for a local heritage building slated for removal inside Kootenay National Park.

Radium council has decided that Mayor Dee Conklin will contact Parks Superintendent Pam Veinotte and let her know the village wants to take part in the final decision regarding the fate of the former superintendent’s house.

“If the building is to be moved, we are hoping that the history of Radium goes with it – it was within the Radium boundaries years ago,” Ms. Conklin said. “Hopefully we can assist the Parks in finding it a great home.”

The old superintendent’s house, located on the north side of Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park just above the Radium hot pools, is the last remaining building from the original Radium townsite. It was slated for removal

by Parks Canada earlier this month in

order to make way for the Redstreak Restoration Project, designed to create more range for the area’s bighorn sheep.

Tania Peters, Media Relations Officer for the Lake Louise, Kootenay and Yoho Field Unit said that the fact that council wants to be involved is “definitely really encouraging to hear.”

“Parks Canada would be interested in working with members of the community such as the council and the Chamber of Commerce before we make a decision on what we will do with the house,” she said.

Ms. Peters added that in September, a Parks Canada asset manager will be on hand to assess the building to see whether it can be moved, and how much it will cost.

Ban on holiday rentals no solution for noise, councillors told

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff As council and staff grope for a way to reduce the alcohol-fuelled celebrations that occur in short-term rental housing in Invermere’s residential zones, a local property management company has weighed in on the debate.

Invermere council held a special meeting the the request of Julie Neville of High Country Properties on Tuesday, July 28th, to discuss an increase of complaints about tourists staying in shortterm vacation homes.

And her message is: don’t blame the good guys!

“We place strict restrictions on renters,” said Ms. Neville, High Country Properties’ general manager. “They have to sign a document saying they will abide by an 11 p.m. quiet time. If they don’t, we will evict them. But typically it only takes one phone call and they will quiet down.

“We are on call 24-7 and we encourage neighbours to call us if there is a problem.”

In June, council opened a “giant can of worms” by looking for ways to control short-term rentals, according to Mayor Gerry Taft.

Currently, council knows of 17 properties leased for short periods by the owners. High Country Properties manages another 15 units in Invermere.

Chief Administrative Officer Chris Prosser told council that the issue has been escalating this year.

“Things quieted down in 2007 and 2008, but we’re starting to see increasing complaints again regarding the activities at short-term rentals.”

However, last week Mr. Prosser was quick to reassure Ms. Neville that management companies are not the problem.

“We have no issue with High Country Properties, but with individual homeowners leasing out their own homes,” he said. “Concern is stated by residents in the community when there is a lack of management.”

In June, council reviewed four options for controlling short-term rentals:

allowing them in commercial areas and new-growth areas, in commercial areas alone, allowing them only after they have been rezoned as “tourist homes,” or prohibiting them altogether.

Ms. Neville told council that prohibiting vacation rentals is not the answer.

“Prohibiting short-term rentals might be a little drastic,” she said. “We live in a resort community and tourism is a prominent industry. We need to continue to be friendly to visitors coming to town. Although there are complaints I think it is better to deal with them than ban short-term rentals.”

Councillor Ray Brydon agreed.

“I understand people come here to have a good time and we want them to,” he said. “If we can encourage people to put their rental home in the hands of a management company then people will come and have a good time and still keep the neighbours happy.”

Mayor Gerry Taft asked staff to look into a bylaw that would permit shortterm rentals only when they are managed by a vacation rental property.

Back in June, RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac also gave council some advice: hire their own officer.

“I would suggest that the District of Invermere looks at hiring a second bylaw officer to work evenings in the summer,” he said.

Staff Sgt. Shehovac also had some tips for full-time residents who deal with noisy neighbours in rentals. “If you know who the homeowner is, phone them at three o’clock in the morning when you are disturbed,” he said.

Neighbours can always lay charges, he pointed, but if you’d rather not, “put up with it if you’re not prepared to do something about it,” he said.

Last week’s meeting between council and High Country Properties is only the beginning of the process, Mayor Taft said.

“This was the first step in the discussion because High Country Properties is the biggest management company in Invermere,” he said. “It will be a long process and there will be no quick decision on this.”

Behind the scenes with the RCMP

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff It’s the busiest weekend of the year, but the Columbia Valley RCMP are having a slow night.

Could be the weather, says Constable Derek Balderston, whom I am accompanying on his night shift on Saturday, August 1st from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.

It’s a windy, stormy evening, which could lead to storm damage, wildfires and domestic assault.

“Some families who don’t spend much time together – for a reason – feel obligated to be together on holidays and vacations, and that can lead to trouble,” Const. Balderston said.

But, so far, this night is uneventful. We drive north from Invermere to the packed Redstreak Campground. On the way, we pass a common spot for drugtaking, but the only folks there are a married couple from Saskatchewan, looking at the view of Radium’s lights. The campground is equally peaceful and there’s not a campfire to be seen. It seems everyone is obeying the fire ban.

So, we return to Invermere with the radar on. The highway between the two communities is a common speeding zone, and Const. Balderston quickly scans each vehicle as it approaches then passes us.

“Some people speed up as soon as we pass them,” he said, “and they’re the people we are watching for.”

In Invermere, we visit Mount Nelson Athletic Park where a group of 10 young men have decided to camp for the night. That’s not allowed, Const. Balderston tells them, and confiscates about 20 cans of beer.

He asks them to find somewhere else to stay the night.

Then, we receive the first call of the shift. It’s 11 p.m. and a neighbour has reported an out-of-control house party in Invermere.

All four police officers in the area respond to the call and find about 30 people spilling out of the house onto the street. The host comes outside to talk to the police and is sternly instructed to get everyone inside the home and to close the doors and windows.

In the meantime, Corporal Brent Ayers stops a vehicle arriving at the party with a cooler full of alco-

Next, we hear about a tree that has blown down on a power line in residential Invermere. We inspect the home and Const. Balderston asks dispatch to tell B.C. Hydro and request they disconnect the wires before they hit the ground and cause a fire. In windy conditions, that could be trouble.

A call comes in for a break-and-enter in Radium.

A hotel guest reports coming back to her room and finding the door ajar and the bathtub overflowing, but nothing was stolen. We visit the complainant, but the constables can only reassure her that it was probably pointless vandalism.

It’s the kind of crime that gets under Const.

Balderston’s skin.

“Vandalism is a criminal activity with no logical purpose. The perpetrators cause harm to a complete stranger,” he said.

Back in Invermere, Const. Balderston spots a group of five people walking along 13th Avenue with open beers. He asks them to pour out the drinks and confiscates a 12-pack they are carrying.

“Either I take this or I give you $400 worth of fines for drinking in public,” he says, when they complain.

On the way back downtown, we spot a sports car illegally passing another vehicle that is turning right.

Const. Balderston hits the siren and lights and races to catch up. The driver stops and Const. Balderston checks the driver’s license – the driver is sober and issued a warning.

“When people drive like that, they are often impaired,” he points out.

By now, it’s almost 2 a.m. – closing time for the bars. As we drive around downtown, Const. Balderston points out other officers parked and cruising the area, watching out for fights, drugs being taken and folks leaving the bars carrying alcohol.

Although there are dozens of people on the street, it seems relatively calm, so when another call comes in about the noisy house party, the RCMP decide to go shut it down.

When we arrive, two constables advise the party host that he has two minutes to clear everyone out, or they will start towing vehicles that are illegally parked.

Slowly, people start leaving – most on foot, and others with a sober driver. It takes several trips inside the house to moves things along, but within half an hour the fun is over and the neighbours can finally get some sleep. It’s now 2:30 a.m.

It’s back to the bar scene. We park across the road from the rowdiest nightclub and watch as the crowds outside disperse. We are watching for vandalism or assault, but all we see are wobbly drunks and couples making out in public.

Two young men are arguing and earn themselves a couple of warnings, but no charges are laid. Remarkably, no one is hauled back to the RCMP’s infamous drunk tank – a three-metre square concrete cell at the detachment where drunks spend the night sobering up.

Confident that the antics are complete for another Saturday night, Const. Balderston heads back to the detachment. He has several hours of paperwork as a result of alcohol confiscation, but that can wait until the morning.

Camping crunch hits valley hard

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff The Columbia Valley is losing precious tourism revenue because it doesn’t have enough available campsites.

On the August long weekend, “about 50 to 70” campers were sent either to Golden or Cranbrook by the Radium Visitor Centre because all local campgrounds were full, according to manager Kent Kebe.

“We lost a lot of business last weekend,” he said.

“Even all the campgrounds in Kootenay National Park were full.”

He said visitor centre staff recommend the various wilderness campgrounds in the area, but not everyone wants to drive into the mountains on gravel roads and camp without services.

“A lot of people prefer to stay in a serviced campground where they can have showers,” he said.

The number of area campgrounds has been dwindling over the past few years.

According to Kent, the Columbia Valley has lost 75 percent of its overnight camping sites in the last four years.

Mountain Shadows near Dry Gulch, a former campground, converted the area into a permanent

campground this spring, but when sales didn’t fully materialize, the owners put 57 campsites back into the short-term rental pool.

“Thank goodness Mountain Shadows made some of their sites available,” Kent said.

But Mountain Shadows will only be allowing nightly campers for the remainder of the season. Next year, they will move back into permanent sites.

“The spots are still all for sale,” said Rhoda Friedel, campground manager at Mountain Shadows.

“The only reason we are open at all is because there were a few glitches with sales. With the state of the economy, the sites didn’t sell as quickly as we had anticipated.”

Dutch Creek RV Resort also went seasonal this year, meaning that the spots are booked from April to October.

Currently only seven commercial campgrounds still offer short-term camping: Radium Valley Vacation Resort – 90 sites; Canyon Campground – 104 sites; Redstreak Campground – 242 sites; Shadybrook – two sites; Lakeshore Resort – 49 sites; Fairmont Resort Campground – 244 sites; and Spruce Grove Resort – 136 sites. Provincial campgrounds at Dry Gulch and Whiteswan Lake also offer camping sites.

From Friday, July 31st to Sunday, August 2nd the Radium Visitor Centre had 622 parties for a total of 1,425 visitors. Most visitors came from Alberta, with the second-highest number being from other parts of Canada.

“All in all, it was a good way to kick off the month and hopefully this continues through the last month of summer!” Kent said.

Information was requested about parks, both national and provincial; area accommodation, adventure recreation; and local attractions.

The hot springs and hiking are still among the most popular activities, although with the heat, most people were looking to sit on a beach and enjoy the sunshine.

The Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre, located at the crossroads in Invermere, had 334 visitors over the three-day period.

According to Heather Overy, Executive Director of the Visitor Centre, staff advised campers of which campgrounds were full so they wouldn’t waste their time driving there.

“But,” she added, “there’s always the chance of a cancellation, so you can never not give out a phone number.”

Movie Review: Obsessed

But their marital bliss takes a nosedive into the rocks when a new temp named Lisa (or temptress, as she is referred to at the office), appears and sets her sights on Derek. She is played by Ali Larter, whom you will recognize from films like Varsity Blues.

After a few pretty intense come-ons by Lisa, Derek finally makes his opinion of her advances clear – apparently a little too clear, as the final rejection sends her off the deep end.

Like any movie with this plot line, the film from this point gets a tad predictable – husband doesn’t tell wife about crazy chick, wife finds out, crazy chick tries to kill wife in order to be with husband forever, you know the drill – but this doesn’t make it any less fun.

Forget spiders, heights and venomous snakes – the only thing I am scared of after watching this movie is crazy chicks like Ali Larter.

Despite the negative reviews, I have to admit I enjoyed the film Obsessed. Comparable to films like Swimfan and Fatal Attraction, Obsessed follows the life of blissfully-married couple Derek and Sharon Charles, played by Idris Elba and Beyonce Knowles.

The couple and their new son Kyle have just moved to Los Angeles, where Derek is employed as a successful financial advisor.

There were parts of this film that were so outrageous that it had me laughing out loud.

The best part of the entire movie was the fight scene between Beyonce and Ali Larter. As the scene began, I was a bit critical because I had recently found out that Beyonce did all of her own stunts in this film.

But it was awesome – I was so impressed!

Also, kudos to Ali Larter – there were points in this movie where I truly believed she was crazy rather than acting a part. She definitely stole the show.

Music in Edgewater at Midsummer’s Eve Submitted by Barry Moore

Pianist Inge Lipkow provides world-class entertainment.

Music has always been a “forte” of the Edgewater Hall, and this summer’s Midsummer’s Eve offers the beautiful Spanish piano music of Inge Lipkow of Fairmont. Trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and Calgary Philharmonic, and a rehearsal pianist and accompanist with musical artists for many years, Inge has her own studio at Dutch Creek where she teaches and plays a remarkable selection of piano music.

Come and hear her first concert in several years on the Edgewater Seiler 208, a fine new German-built design that has been “souped up” for the Edgewater Hall acoustics by Art Gieck of Country Piano House.

Both Edgewater pianos are tuned to each other, so dual piano pieces are both tuneful and scintillating.

Another guest artist is Jade Bowen, who has begun writing music at the age of 12. Hear her sing to the extremely musical accompaniment of Oso Simple, a fine guitarist who is spending the year in Invermere, to our good fortune. He is also a songwriter and teacher, and will perform some of his own compositions.

Bryan Deans, who teaches soaring at the Invermere airport, is taking a break from conducting Vancouver orchestras by playing many concerts and gigs in the valley. He and Mariah Mennie will be entertaining us with numbers from their repertoire. Mariah is also a

well-liked, skilled pianist, fire-poi artist and singer.

Wanda Seel and Barry Moore have been playing music at Edgewater Hall for many years. Their ensemble – the Lockwood Quartet – is joined this year by cellist Bryan Deans, as they bring you exciting and romantic compositions for piano trio: some of your favourites and some from a long-lost book of beautiful arrangements for this ideal group of instruments. As is traditional, we are expecting mystery guest artists who have not confirmed just yet.

The Columbia Valley Music Association has, for the past 10 years, brought many local and regional artists to the Edgewater Hall stage, built modular staging, purchased a simple lighting system, and now has a piano trolley to move the grand piano onto the stage.

Monies brought in by the concert pay for rehearsal time at the hall and improvements to the equipment needed to produce these popular events.

The association is now a member of the Columbia Valley Arts Council and has benefited from this association, being able to share Cinefest with the Edgewater area audience.

Cameron Bird paints rugged landscape Submitted By Deanna Berrington The Artym Gallery Local mountain and river scenes, as well as landscapes from across British Columbia and Alberta — including Lake O’Hara, Takakkaw Falls, The Columbia Icefields, Jasper and the remote Chilcotin — will be featured in a solo exhibition of Cameron Bird’s work at the Artym Gallery, opening Friday, August 8th.

Mr. Bird often paints ‘en plein air’ (in open air), a style made famous in Canadian art by the Group of Seven.

This technique requires a surety of movement, a quick eye for composition and colour, and a great deal of experience. Cameron will be bringing several of these on-location studies.

Many of his larger pieces refer directly back to these study works – he keeps them right next to the easel while he paints in the studio, in order to retain the sense of freshness and immediacy that the ‘en plein air’ works possess.

The largest painting that Cameron Bird has created to date will be at the Artym Gallery for this exhibition. A landscape of Lake O’Hara, Cameron says that this painting is “a traditional scene, but a little to the left . . .” Working on a canvas measuring 60 inches by

80 inches was a challenge for Cameron, but, in doing so, he discovered a new style of brushwork he used to paint everything else in the show. Not one to become stagnant, Cameron is constantly challenging himself to paint and approach each painting in different ways.

“Recently, my focus has been on my brushwork and how to layer colour

in a new way,” he said. “I try to avoid formula, and try to create happy accidents.”

Bird doesn’t consider his work to be modern art. He finds that it is more reminiscent of work by the Group of Seven and Carl Rungius.

“I simplify my paintings in order to make them more contemporary,” Cam-

eron said, “like Lawren Harris and his movement from realism to abstraction.

I put who I am and how I feel about a scene in my work. This is me and this is why I paint.”

Cameron talks about why he works in oil rather than acrylic: “Oil has become a part of how I paint. (If I paint in) acrylic, it doesn’t look like I’ve been there. There is a feeling to oil. It represents me and the mountains, and the power of that branch, or this tree . . . it comes through in the colour and the brushstrokes.”

Cameron Bird’s work is authentically Western Canadian. He captures the rugged spirit of the land, cloaked in the rich colours and textures of the back country. His love of history and his passion for the country he paints create a unique style that has aspects of both contemporary and traditional landscape which is undeniably interesting and engaging. Everyone is welcome to take this opportunity to meet this incredible artist.

Columbia Valley Arts expresses gratitude for community support Submitted by Jessica Gowling Pynelogs Cultural Centre With a whirlwind week wrapping up at Pynelogs, it’s time to look back on all the amazing things Columbia Valley Arts Council and its supportive community have accomplished this season!

As a non-profit organization, the arts council exists solely to be a facilitator, encourager and supporter of the arts in the valley.

However, we cannot do this alone.

Thanks to a compassionate and generous community, the arts council is able to accomplish all that we do.

Art from the Heart was hosted at Pynelogs for the fifth year in a row, with Fairmont Hot Springs Resort as its proud sponsor. This showcase displayed artwork from budding elementary school artists who love to create with a free spirit and bright imagination.

REACH returned for its fifth year with the ever-creative David Thompson Secondary School art teacher, Robyn Oliver, who curated another expansive exhibition of our high school student’s artwork.

Panorama Mountain Village was the main supporter of this annual event that allows our emerging artists a chance to show in a professional setting.

Mountain Mosaic is our annual Canada Day festival, where thousands of families and friends come out to Pynelogs and its green space to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Bob and Barb Shaunessy, Home Hardware, Columbia Basin Trust and Panorama Mountain Village were the reasons we could offer such a great festival.

Without their fiscal assistance, this year’s event wouldn’t have been wellstocked with dancers, singers, performers, clowns, stilt-walkers, face-painters, bounce castles, or any of the other fun things that made Mountain Mosaic so special.

Cinéfest’s ‘Summer Shorts’ was a new event that graced Pynelogs this season. Sponsored by Pixel Planet Design, ‘Summer Shorts’ was a one-evening event that screened award-winning

short films from all genres.

PyneStock, which just wrapped up, is always a success! So successful, in fact, that this year we were able to expand our show to two nights, thanks to the support of Gerry’s Gelati and Peppi’s Pizzeria, not to mention the wonderful youth who took time out of their schedules to share their musical talents with us.

Tour of the Arts, a self-guided art tour, was another great accomplishment this year. Without a patient organizing committee, 50 eager local artisans and sponsorships from Tinhorn Creek Winery, the Columbia Valley Pioneer, Quiniscoe Homes, Artym Gallery, Palliser Printing, Essentials, Effusion Art Gallery and Bavin Glassworks, this tour wouldn’t have been possible. A big thanks also goes to all those people who purchased a passport and took the tour.

Our gratitude must also be expressed to everyone involved in putting together our brochure, which helps Columbia Valley Arts circulate important information about our art shows, concerts and events to both the visiting and local public. Thanks to Pixel Planet Design, Bavin Glassworks and Will Green Carpentry for helping us spread the word.

Furthermore, our sponsors – the B.C. Arts Council, the District of Invermere, the B.C. Preparing to buy your very first home Interest rates are low, housing prices have dipped and many young people are now considering buying their first home.

While this experience can be exciting, it can also be complicated.

Fortunately, there are some great tips that can be followed to make the financial end of the deal a little less difficult.

How much should you borrow?

With today’s low interest rates many young homebuyers may qualify for larger mortgages than they would have 10 years ago and can get into some great homes. This can be a double-edged sword, however.

Buying a house at the maximum range of an approved mortgage can make things tight financially in the future.

If interest rates rise in the future, then you must consider if you will still be able to make your mortgage payments down the road.

A simple question for your banker or mortgage broker would be to ask them to run your financial situation with two or three percentage points higher on your mortgage to see if you would still qualify.

If not, then you may want to reduce the amount of money you’re willing to borrow.

Just because the bank will lend the money to you doesn’t always mean you should take it.

Consider using your RRSP A great way to help with a down payment on your first home is to use the federal government’s Home Buyer’s Plan.

The Home Buyer’s Plan allows for first-time homebuyers to remove money from their RRSP account tax-free as a loan, and use the funds as a down payment on their home.

The plan allows for $20,000 to be withdrawn from the RRSP and 15 years to pay the amount back interest-free.

The best loan in the world is to borrow money tax-free from yourself.

Don’t forget your tax credit First-time homebuyers also qualify for a federal government tax credit of $5,000. This tax credit is applied against the lowest federal income tax rate of 15 percent for 2009 and saves a homebuyer $750 at tax time.

Fixed vs. variable mortgages For the last 30 years or so, variable rate mortgages have been a better deal than fixed rate mortgages.

You’ll find all sorts of literature at lending institutions reminding you of this fact.

Fixed rate mortgages underperformed so much during this period, because interest rates fell almost consistently from the peak rates in 1980-1982 until today.

Variable rate mortgages always do better than fixed rate mortgages when interest rates are falling.

How could they not?

In the future, however, interest rates will have to rise at some point, as we are at historically low rates right now.

When the interest rates start to rise, fixed rate mortgages will likely outperform variable rate mortgages.

A simple rule of thumb would be that if you have a salaried income that is unlikely to change in the future, then you may want to consider a fixed mortgage.

If mortgage rates rise, you will then be protected against the inability to earn more income.

If you work for yourself, or have an income that is variable, then you may want to consider a variable mortgage.

A variable mortgage may keep your payments flexible and allow for you to pay down lump-sums in the future or to hoard your cash during rough times.

If you are considering buying your first home, be sure to consult your financial advisor, accountant or mortgage broker. There are a lot of factors to consider, and you will need some great advice on what will work best for your situation.

Wildsight weed pull coming soon Submitted by Laurel Ralston Wildsight Invasive plants make up the second-biggest threat to biodiversity in the world.

The aggressive invaders are second only to habitat loss.

These plants are invading the Radium Hot Springs area — and getting close to the sensitive Columbia Wetlands ecosystem — but there are non-toxic, effective ways to slow them down and protect biodiversity.

One of the best ways is to join in the Radium Community Weed Pull on August 10th.

“The weed pull is a great way for community groups to earn some money,” said Rachel Darvill, who heads Wildsight’s Columbia Headwaters program and who is organizing the weed pull event for Wildsight and the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council, with the support of Columbia Basin Trust.

Ms. Darvill said that the East

Kootenay Invasive Plant Council will give $250 to any non-profit group that participates in the weed pull.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity,” she said. “To see if your group can take part, just email me. And, of course, we are still looking for families and individuals to come out, too.”

The Radium Hot Springs community weed pull will take place on Monday, August 10th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

To get there: meet on Forsters Landing Road, just past the mill on the north side of the road before it intersects with the Columbia Wetlands.

Snacks and drinks will be provided, as will gloves and plastic bags.

“Invasive plants are often found in our own backyards,” Ms. Darvill said.

“Some of them are very attractive — so people don’t like to pull them out.

“But because there are no natural predators to keep these species at bay, they can completely take over an area, pushing out native plants, birds and animals.”

Ms. Darvill said the upcoming weed pull will teach people how to identify some common invaders, such as Common Tansy, Spotted Knapweed and Orange Hawkweed.

“This year, we want to get rid of an isolated patch of Common Tansy,” she said.

“It is very close to the Columbia Wetlands Wildlife Management Area and we don’t want it to spread into that sensitive wetland ecosystem.

“This is a tangible, effective way people can help restore the native plant ecology near the Columbia Wetlands in Radium,” she added.

“Many hands make light work – and a big difference.”

Some of these are: shank, duckhook, chili-dip, skull, worm burner and of course draw, fade and slice.

Golf Briefs Celebrating Health Care golf tournament to raise funds for hospital The second annual Celebrating Health Care Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 15th and organizers hope to raise at least $25,000 for the “Together for Everyone! Invermere District Hospital Emergency Department” campaign.

“I personally believe that the government should be paying for all of it, but that’s not going to happen so we’re going to have to do it,” said Helga Boker, director at large for Kootenay Savings, a major sponsor of the tournament. “Our emergency room is pretty outdated and this tournament is a way that everyone – even out-of-towners – can contribute.”

The Together for Everyone! campaign, spearheaded by the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the Auxiliaries of the Columbia Valley, is responsible for raising $500,000 to be put towards new equipment for the emergency room. The upgrades to the emergency department will cost $4.6 million, funded by the B.C. Ministry of Health, Interior Health and Kootenay East Regional Hospital District.

The golf tournament can accommodate 144 players, and so far there are already around 100 registered.

It is an 18-hole event, complete with dinner, and open to both novice and experienced golfers.

The day will include a shotgun start, with two teams on each hole, and Helga is busy collecting gifts, door prizes and items for the evening raffle.

Verge for Youth raises $14,000 August 16th and 30th

Almost $14,000 was raised for charity at the 17th Annual Verge for Youth Golf Tournament on Sunday, August 2nd. “We were very happy with the amount raised,” said president Floyd Verge.

About 60 people headed to Windermere Valley Golf Course and played a round to raise money for the Verge for Youth Society. Established in 2000, the society donates bursaries to David Thompson Secondary School and helps out ill or under-privileged children.

The funds raised last weekend will help a 16-yearold boy from Golden with bone cancer, and a 14-yearold girl from Edgewater suffering from kidney failure.

Hungarian dining, with a million-dollar view

A new chef is spicing up a popular valley restaurant.

Andras Szabo of Hungary, 27, is the new head chef at the Citadella Restaurant in Radium Hot Springs and so far, his cooking has received nothing but rave reviews.

“The most important thing to me is how he cooks,” said Steven Zoltan, owner of the Rocky Mountain Springs Lodge and the Citadella Restaurant. “And he cooks phenomenally.”

Born and raised in Hungary, Andras began cooking seriously when he was 17 years old. As a teenager, he attended a professional high school for budding chefs in Keszthely, Hungary.

But that’s not where his love of cooking began.

Andras’s grandmother worked as a chef for 40 years at a small restaurant in his country. Often she would let young Andras help out in the kitchen. He learned a lot from his grandmother, he said, and even uses some of her recipes in his cooking today.

After high school, Andras spent years being trained by one of the best chefs in Hungary. Since then, he has added a number of culinary feats to his resume including a bronze medal at the Chef ’s World Cup in 2006.

“I just love cooking – it’s so colourful – there is always something different,” Andras said. “It’s an art for me; I like the challenges it presents.”

One can attest to his love for cooking, just by tasting the food. Andras makes all of his own sauces and desserts from scratch.

“I would recommend that people try the vadash,” he said. “It’s my number one favourite.”

Vadash is a traditional Hungarian dish comprised of broiled beef slices served in a sour cream-based vegetable sauce with homemade bread dumplings.

Located high on a hilltop above Radium Hot Springs, overlooking the Columbia River wetlands to the north, the food at the Citadella is complemented by the “million-dollar view” boasted by the restaurant.

Steven moved to Canada from Hungary in 1983.

After 20 years in Calgary, he saw a newspaper advertisement for the restaurant and lodge in Radium, and bought the place.

The Citadella is the only Hungarian restaurant within a hundred kilometres and with a talented new chef and a million-dollar view – it is definitely worth a visit.

Editor’s Note Today, August 7th, the Regional District of East Kootenay board of directors will vote on whether to ask the province to designate Jumbo Glacier Resort a mountain resort municipality. The motion was put forward by Director David Wilks, Mayor of Sparwood. If passed, it would mean the regional district is not responsible for Jumbo’s rezoning process should the province grant the resort its Master Development Agreement. A threeperson council would be appointed by the province.

‘Enviro-radicals’ disrupt democracy Dear Editor: The directors of the Regional District of East Kootenay and the Ministers of the B.C. Liberal Government, newly elected, do indeed have an obligation to secure the social and economic sustainability for the region and the province as a whole.

The idea that Director Wilks’ proposal (to let Jumbo Glacier Resort area become a resort municipality) is somehow undemocratic is preposterous. Director Wilks has been democratically elected, and together with the other elected regional directors, is expected to look after the economic sustainability for the region.

The whole idea of due process seems disrespected by the anti-Jumbo league. This is what is dangerous to a democracy. Due process and democratic institutions are what keep our country civilized.

I have grown increasingly alarmed at the tactics of many of the so-called enviros in our

region who have seen fit to actually destroy a public presentation in Kaslo about a proposed hydro project. When the project was presented in Invermere, three times various “enviros” tried to rudely cat-call down the presentation, and three times I had to stand up and loudly declare to these people that I would actually like to hear the presentation which they had no right to interrupt. Definitely, I felt threatened by their hateful looks and ranting voices. These are the elements that spell the end of democracy and define mob mentality. This is nothing but brute force trying to destroy a public hearing.

Enviro-radicalism has no room in a peaceful community. A healthy family respects differing points of view. It’s the same with a healthy community. I find many, if not most, of the anti-Jumbos very radical, carrying around lots of hate and anger, which is a threat to us all. One cannot have a peaceful discussion with these people without them jumping down your throat.

Time to heal our community Dear Editor: I understand one of the topics of discussion in the August 7th regional district board meeting is designating Jumbo Glacier Resort as a mountain resort municipality.

I am writing to urge each and every Regional District of East Kootenay board member to approve this resolution on behalf of the entire East and West Kootenays.

I support this project because: 1. The C.O.R.E. process (17 years ago), through discussion with many different and involved parties all came to an overwhelming majority approval of this project in this place at this time: Jumbo Valley as a resort area. Public discussion has been dragging on ever since.

2. The provincial government has given regional districts the opportunity to suggest to the provincial government opportunities to declare special areas as mountain resort municipalities.

These include local governance with advisory board and council including local people.

3. The long-term increase in job opportunities for our sons and daughters and our communities in the entire Columbia Valley are stupendous. These opportunities are akin to those enjoyed by Golden, Revelstoke, Kimberley and

Fernie with their ski resort communities. Intrawest and Panorama Resort have given their positive response to this project, and they are the closest resort community to benefit.

4. I am concerned about the ability of staff within the regional district to have the people and time resources — let alone the financial resources — to take on the task of re-accomplishing what has been done through 17 years of government and private resources funding.

5. The most important reason for approving this resolution, in my mind, is that this issue, in its overly-long process, has driven a wedge between family members, neighbours, co-workers and friends throughout the Kootenays. This divisiveness has to stop. It is tearing our communities apart emotionally.

You, as directors, have the ability to show leadership by forwarding this positive resolution to the provincial government in Victoria at your earliest convenience. I believe that this will go a very long way towards helping our communities heal and prosper into the future. I urge you, as a Radium resident and as a business owner in Radium, to support this resolution.

Jumbo Glacier Resort has already declared environmentalism the victor by the 200 environmental agreements they have made with our government and they have been most patient over the course of 20 years of due process. The project promises to create 800 or more jobs for our region. It will put the area on the international map. It’ll make better use of the expanded Cranbrook airport. It will diversify and enhance the economy of our region. It’s exactly what we need here.

Jumbo Resort supports new designation Dear Editor: Glacier Resorts Ltd. fully supports the resolution before the Regional District of East Kootenay in recommending to the province that a Mountain Resort Municipality, which ensures local governance and representation, should be created for the resort.

The Jumbo Glacier Resort project has been reviewed by a series of processes since the early 1990s. The East Kootenay C.O.R.E. (Commission on Resources and the Environment) Table made the land use decision on the Jumbo Glacier Resort project in 1994. In 2004, the project received an Environmental Certificate, and the Jumbo Glacier Resort Master Plan was approved in 2007. Each of these processes involved significant public and local government input.

The next step is the signing of a Master Development Agreement, which is the operating agreement for the resort and normally follows automatically after the approval of the Master Plan. In this case, that process has been delayed pending the results of the respectful consultation process between the Province and First Nations.

The creation of a Mountain Resort Municipality will result in a practicable local governance structure for the resort.

Despite the hoopla of a grand opening this spring, the Botanical Garden Society’s community greenhouse lies fallow, as barren as the moon, at the height of this year’s growing season.

However, greenhouse education coordinator Lin Steedman said more is going on than meets the eye.

In fact, she said, the greenhouse is deep in the throes of an invisible harvest she hopes will benefit a future crop this winter.

“We have stopped production and are harvesting heat,” Ms. Steedman commented. “We are storing heat four feet underground.”

An extension of the mission and vision of the Columbia Valley Botanical Garden and Centre for Sustainable Living, the community greenhouse, she explained, is designed to be self-supporting and completely sustainable.

To that end, she said, the greenhouse employs Annualized Geo-Solar heating to keep plants warm over the icy winter months. The ground under the building, she said, will act as a thermal mass.

Over the summer months, the greenhouse is closed off and allowed to bake in the summer sun. The hot air is being vented into the earth beneath the building and will be recouped this winter.

“We need to be storing as much heat as possible for the winter months,” she said. “So, it’s super-hot in here.”

To supplement the heat supply, the building is being equipped with solar thermal radiant heating in the floor. Solar panels will heat water to be circulated through the concrete floor of the building.

The greenhouse has also recently been outfitted with a bank of five solar panels that will generate one kilowatt of electricity. Any excess energy generated will be sold back to BC Hydro, she said.

“You can call us the local mini-utility,” Ms. Steedman quipped.

To supply the greenhouse’s need for water, she said, rain falling on the expansive roof of nearby David Thompson Secondary School will be diverted into two 25,000-gallon tanks buried adjacent to the greenhouse.

“It will be the biggest rainwater collection project in the valley,” she said. “So, we’re stoked about that.”

The building is a pilot project in sustainable technologies and a diverse learning laboratory for the community.

“It will be interesting to see how it goes,” she said.

“We have all the elements in place, but it’s an experiment.”

This fall, she said, the greenhouse will swing into full production. The student chefs will be growing food for the school cafeteria, math and science students will be monitoring the sustainability systems and weather, and a full slate of community workshops are scheduled. Jodi Pederson to perform at Bud’s Submitted British Columbia’s singing sensation Jodi Pederson will hit the stage at Bud’s Bar & Lounge on August 9th.

A proud promoter of her Canadian heritage, Jodi’s music is inspired by artists like Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, The Beatles, Sarah McLachlan, Blue Rodeo and Queen. Her creative song-writing has also been compared to stars like Joni Mitchell.

Jodi was born into a family with a deep appreciation for music. She was raised in Vernon and is one of three children. Growing up, it was not unusual for her to hear music being blasted from the old record player and the entire family, including the three girls, singing along.

She began singing as a child at family gatherings, an experience that developed Jodi’s ear for harmonizing. She learned her first scales on the guitar from her uncle, and later on had her first attempt at recording with musician Chris Madsen.

Jodi was recognized by Jack Lenz of Lenz Entertainment at the age of 17 – he later went on to produce her first album, entitled Seasons. A portrait of the strength and weakness of the human heart, Seasons is a smooth mixture of the organic and the produced.

She sings of personal experience, filtered by heartfelt emotion and honesty.

Throughout her blossoming career, Jodi has worked with big names like Asher Lenz, singer-songwriter Adam Crossley and music engineer Michael Jack. She was also chosen for a prestigious song-writing workshop put on by Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes at the age of 18.

Pioneer Classifieds s obituary s Mollie Laird

1909 – 2009 Mollie Laird, a long-time Invermere resident, passed away on Saturday August 1st in the Burns Lake hospital.

She lived in the valley for 84 years before relocating to Burns Lake in 1996, and was considered to be one of our outstanding pioneers.

Mollie was born Mary Kathleen Marples in Bromley, Kent, England in December 1909. In 1912, at the age of 2, she travelled with her family on the long journey to The Benches, west of Invermere where her father was developing a farm.

Mollie was raised as a typical farm girl of her time, working in the fields and barns and helping with the farm chores as required. There was no public education for girls in those days, so she obtained six years of schooling at private schools in Vernon and at the Queen Margaret’s School in Duncan.

In 1930 she married Alfred Laird and moved to the Laird farm on the west side of Lake Lillian where they farmed for over 20 years. After the war, to help make ends meet, she turned the farm into a tourist lodge, much like today’s B & Bs, providing accommodation and meals to tourists, renting fishing boats, and looking after big game hunters.

The farm was sold in the 1950s and Mollie and Alfred moved into Invermere. Mollie and a close friend opened the first flower shop in the valley, a business which she managed very successfully for several years. This allowed her to express her appreciation of flowers and gardens.

In 1968 she lost her husband, an unexpected event that changed her life. She sold her business and took up golf, hiking and painting, and spent a month or two every year travelling to different parts of the world to explore other cultures, visit distant relatives and to satisfy her curiousity about other cultures and the world around her.

Throughout her life, Mollie actively supported causes and organizations that assisted Invermere and the Windermere District. Over the years she served as a Girl Guide leader, worked as Secretary and President of the Red Cross, was active in the Windermere Valley Museum, assisted in the library at the J. Alfred Laird School and was active with the Anglican Church Women’s Group. In 1988 Mollie was awarded the “Heart of Gold Award”, a program designed to recognize individuals who have enhanced the lives of others through acts of selflessness. In 1989 she was given a special award for her work with the J. Alfred Laird School.

In 1996 Mollie moved to Burns Lake to be near her daughter and continued her community involvement by knitting, seemingly non-stop, for the benefit of the Burns Lake and District Hospital Auxiliary.

In Loving Remembrance of Nancy September 1st , 1949 – August 3, 2002

Mollie lived a full and active life for over 99 years, serving as an example to others and helping her community. She stayed alert and current through a huge network of friends and enjoyed good health until her recent short stay in hospital.

Spur Valley golf course greens vandalized

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Spur Valley Greens golf course was vandalized on Saturday night, resulting in hours of labour to repair the damage.

During his morning check of the course on Sunday, August 2nd, superintendent Kelly Gordon discovered the damage.

Vandals had trespassed on the course with a shovel and dug about 10 holes, each a foot deep, on the green of the ninth hole.

“It is just labour-intensive,” said owner Ron Csokonay. “It spoils the pristine condition of the course. A hole of this calibre is taking away from the stratification of the whole green.”

Bighorns recruiting for 2009 season

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff The Kootenay Bowl-champion Columbia Valley Bighorns are recruiting for this fall’s football season. The Bighorns are looking for a third winning performance in this year’s Kootenay Bowl championship. The boys won the crown of the Kootenays in 2007 and 2008.

“The season is shaping up very well,” Coach Bruce Marlow commented, including games against Castlegar, Penticton, Vernon and a tourney involving five Aberta teams at Henry Wisewood in Calgary.

Boys aged 13 to 18 can register on August 22nd, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bighorns field in Invermere.

Testing takes place on August 23rd.

Fall camp runs from August 24th to 30th.

The 2009 season runs from September 1st - November 15th, culminating in the ‘09 Kootenay Bowl.

Use your God-given gifts well

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Over the past while, we have been looking at the importance of the Body of Christ working together, working in unity to fulfill God’s commission here on Earth.

Last week we took a look at 1 Peter chapter 4 verses 7-11 from the New Living Translation.

“The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God Himself were speaking through you.

Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to Him forever and ever!

Amen.”

A whole series could be written on these verses, but I believe that Peter is trying to stress some basic principles of our walk with God. The first thing is the importance of praying one for another, praying in love, not quick to criticize what

others are or aren’t doing, but to pray for them in love that God would work in them and through them.

The second thing is the importance of God’s love in us, and showing that love to each other, then expanding that love out into a hurting and lost world.

The third thing I believe God is saying is the importance of the gifting He has placed in each of us, to be used in serving one another, not in our own strength, but in the strength and energy He supplies.

The fourth thing is that as we pray one for another, as we let God’s love shine in us and through us, as we use the gifts that He gave us, then empowered us to use, it will all be for the glory of God through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for ever and ever.

My challenge to you today is to get before God, spend that time in prayer with Him, look around for somebody to love with God’s love, look for practical ways to help those who have needs, and reach out in Jesus’s name and touch somebody. Use the gifts that God has given you, not for yourself, but to serve one another. I believe there is a tremendous need for those giftings to be exercised in the body of Christ, as Jesus said in Matthew 9:37-38: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

Time is short, the harvest is great, and I believe, that through prayer, in love, working together, exercising the gifts God has given us, and using the gifts He has empowered us to use, we will be part of a great end-time harvest of souls. It is all about Jesus – His love, His obedience, His death, His resurrection, His power. All glory and power to Him forever and ever!

The Faith First Club at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Parish Canadian Martyrs Parish is offering Christian education, catechism, and Sacramental preparation for children. Classes are for all children from grades K-7. Features include small group discussion, Q&A with the Pastor and activities.

Faith First Club will begin in mid-September.
