Julie Neville, General Manager High Country Properties
General Manager of High Country Properties, Julie Neville knew the Valley was home from the day she arrived in 1984. “I couldn’t believe this piece of paradise was virtually undiscovered at that time.” The development boom occurred soon after and continued until last year. Now there are virtually thousands of seasonal homes sitting empty throughout the Valley and at Panorama. Julie said her company’s job is to keep some of those homes/condos occupied. “It seems wasteful to allow properties to sit unoccupied when an excellent revenue gener-

ating alternative exists,” she said. Short-term vacation rental homes are in high demand in this area, and especially at Panorama. “It just makes sense to offset some of the costs of owning a second home and is also more cost-efficient, as the homes are being kept warm for a reason.” Despite the recent downturn in the economy, High Country Properties continues to grow. “We are now renting properties in Kimberley and Fernie, which has had some impressive results,” Julie said, adding that the company is also aligning with Canadian Mountain Lodging Co. and
will soon have properties in Golden and Canmore. And it doesn’t stop there; HCP will be licensed for strata management services within the next few months. The reason for this growth and the company’s ability to confidently move forward is largely due to co-owner and founder John Newton’s inability to slow down after 23 years in this business, and also to HCP’s amazing staff. “I can’t say enough about our nine fulltime employees and our contract staff,” Julie said. “We all work extremely well together and, most importantly, everyone cares.”

Since then, she has provided delicious hors d’oevres, hearty roast dinners, and party appetizers for events like Bonspiel on the Lake, the Edgewater Homecoming and the TransRockies bike race. “I just like to see people enjoying my food,” Anne said. “I’m very fussy and my biggest nightmare would be to run out of something, so I always buy plenty.”

Donna Hazelaar: Turning up the heat in a man’s profession By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Donna Hazelaar is a hard-working woman and proud of it. She is the founder and operator of Hi Heat Insulating, a company specializing in both residential and commercial installation using formaldehyde-free fibreglass insulation. Hi Heat Insulating is proud to be locally owned and operated. “My philosophy has always been that three things have to happen to be successful: the customer has to be happy with the result of the work, the employees have to be happy with their working conditions, and I have to be satisfied with the overall job,” she says. Donna began Hi Heat Insulating in Campbell River in 1988. In no time her work ethic and fierce sense of determination gained her respect from builders and customers alike. But after 11 years of making a name for herself on the coast, Donna decided it was time to escape from the economic downturn in the area. The single mother of three sons moved to Invermere. Shortly after her big move, she started dating Harold Hazelaar, who was, and still is, a contractor salesman at Home Hardware. After dating for six years, the happy couple got married in 2005. It wasn’t long before Donna reestablished Hi Heat Insulating in the Columbia Valley and here she found great success. Since then she has gained the respect of home-builders in the valley and established a reputation of being prompt and reliable.
“The past ten years here have been very rewarding,” Donna said. “I have developed long-term business relationships with many of the local builders we continue to work with today.” But, she said, she couldn’t do it without her team of talented tradesmen. “My employees have been with me for a lot of years and they are a great bunch of guys,” Donna said. “They are very loyal and will work their butts off to ensure that our demanding schedules are met.” Although her field of work is dominated by men, Donna approaches each new challenge with confidence. “One job I remember, here in the valley, the builders made everyone on the site wear a hard hat,” she said. “They bought me a pink hard hat, which thrilled me to bits. I didn’t know you could even get pink hard hats. Harold bought me a pink tool pouch to go with it! “I am proud of my femininity. I have some fun with it, which often breaks the ice.” She said she thinks that it is a shame that she doesn’t see many women in her business, but hopes that will change. “Hopefully one day the construction industry will have more women working in all of the trades,” she said. Donna’s regular duties include dealing with customers, measuring the work site, scheduling the workers, quoting prices, arranging material delivery, and invoicing. Although Donna has made a name for herself as a successful businesswoman, she wears more hats than just a hard hat. She is the proud mother of three grown sons, Chris, a construction worker who resides in Campbell River; Casey, golf professional at The Springs Golf Course in Radium Hot Springs who resides in Windermere; and Corey, an iron worker and part-time student at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Victoria. She is also a caring person. Last Christmas, Donna, Harold and her son Casey spent part of their holidays in Costa Rica visiting an orphanage. They spent Christmas Eve day bringing food and gifts they had gathered to 34 orphans. “I felt that this year I really wanted to give something back, for all the good times that I have had in my business over the years,” Donna said. “To be able to witness the pure joy on the faces of these children who basically have very little, was by far the most moving experience I have ever had.” The Hi Heat Insulating office is located at 1820 Wilmai Place in Windermere. For more information on the services provided by Hi Heat Insulating, call Donna at 250-342-7260 or visit www.hiheatinsulating.com.
