LUCKY TO BE ALIVE – The driver of this 2001 Western Star logging truck owned by Valley Gorge trucking of Parson was lucky to walk away uninjured after losing control of the rig on the curves north of Edgewater at 4 a.m., last Thursday morning. The cab was smashed in when the rolling rig clipped a utility pole. According to a company spokesperson, the 38-year-old driver was southbound in his way to the Skookumbchuk when the crash occurred.

Locals injured in Revelstoke avalanche

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Two Columbia Valley residents were injured in a deadly avalanche near Revelstoke on Saturday, March 13th.

The men wish to remain anonymous, but one dislocated his leg and is on crutches. The other was buried up to his waist and had to dig himself out.

They were attending the Big Iron Shootout at Boulder Mountain, near Revelstoke, when a giant avalanche swept down the mountain, engulfing 200 sledders and spectators.

Two Albertan men died and 30 people were injured. Rescuers are amazed there weren’t more fatalities. After the avalanche, RCMP set up a large temporary morgue at a private air hanger.

“It is with a feeling of great relief and somewhat disbelief that all we saw it utilized for was the safe storage of broken snowmobiles waiting to be retrieved by

owners, and not rows of bodies waiting to be identified by loved ones,” said Corporal Dan Moskaluk.

Kimberley avalanche expert Dave Quinn said it is a miracle the tragedy wasn’t worse.

“It really could easily have been the other way around – two injured and 30 dead,” he said.

The tragedy should show how important it is for those using the back country to have basic avalanche awareness, Dave added.

“Those involved chose to ignore the basic risks associated with standing or parking their machines at the bottom of a very obvious, open avalanche chute, when avalanche conditions were well-known to be dangerous, and with multiple large, powerful machines rumbling around in the start zone of the avalanche above them,” Dave said.

The avalanche occurred when two sledders were competing to see who could reach the highest point on the mountain, an activity known as “high marking.”

“This is equivalent to sprinting across a busy freeway – sure, it’s fun and sure, it will work out most of the time. But odds are, eventually something dangerous will happen,” Dave said.

But Barry Lightfoot, president of the Windermere Valley Snowmobile Club, said sledding is no more dangerous than heli-skiing.

“When you’re heli-skiing, you can trigger the avalanche and those guys, they’re the crazy ones. At least we have the horsepower – you can stay on top of it with your sled,” Barry said.

“They are going to try to place blame but it’s nobody’s fault; when you go into the back country, that’s the risk,” he added.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit has launched an investigation into the deaths.

“If evidence to support a charge under the Criminal Code is obtained, a report will be forwarded to Crown Counsel recommending criminal charges,” said Corporal Moskaluk.

Edmonton teen dies after skiing into tree

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Staff at Panorama Mountain Village are reeling after the tragic death of a 16-year-old skier.

Skyler Lockwood of Edmonton was on a school field trip to the resort last Monday, March 15th, and was skiing down the blue Rollercoaster run at about 10 a.m.

“He lost control and collided with a tree, which resulted in head and internal injuries that were fatal,” said Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac.

“The young male was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac added.

A school mate skiing with Skyler saw the collision and stopped a passing skier.

“The first adult on the scene to provide assistance happened to be a trauma doctor who immediately started resuscitation,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said.

Panorama Ski Patrol were at the scene within minutes and rushed Skyler off the mountain.

“He was placed in a helicopter and flown to Invermere and District Hospital, where shortly after he was pronounced deceased,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said.

Skyler and thirty class mates from J. Percy Page High School were on a two-day field trip with three teachers. The trip was cut short after the tragic ac-

cident.

Monday was a sunny day at the ski hill, according to Jamie Hurschler, marketing coordinator for Panorama Mountain Village.

“It was sunny and calm, minus eight degrees,” Jamie said.

The entire staff has been affected by the tragedy, he added.

“It’s a tough time for us and we are dealing with it by supporting the boy’s family and friends and working through it as a resort,” Jamie said.

There hasn’t been a fatality at Panorama Mountain Resort since July 2007, when 31-year-old Robin Kochorek was attacked by a black bear while she was mountain biking.

RCMP Report Submitted by Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac RCMP Columbia Valley Detachment • On Wednesday, March 10th, members of the RCMP’s Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of a green Toyota that had a window smashed while parked at the rear of Radium Esso. • On March 10th, RCMP members attended a fire in the 8000 block of Dehart Road. A trailer was burned and destroyed. No one was in the home at the time. The fire is suspicious in nature. Columbia Valley Detachment was assisted in the investigation by Cranbrook Identification Section and a Cranbrook RCMP fire investigator. • On Thursday, March 11th at 1:30 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of mischief after a rock was thrown through the window of Inside Edge on 7th Avenue, Invermere. • On March 11th at 4 a.m., police attended a single vehicle accident on the 5000 block of Highway 95 in Edgewater. A 28year-old Edmonton man was arrested and lodged in cells. He was issued a violation ticket for being drunk in public upon his release. • On Sunday, March 14th at 4 a.m., police, again, assisted Panorama Security on a disturbance and assault complaint.

Upon arrival, police dealt with a 22-year-old Cranbrook man. The victim of the assault did not request charges. The man was cautioned and released to friends. • On Monday, March 15th at 8 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment Members attended to a complaint of Break and Enter at KÜnig Meats on 7th Avenue in Invermere.

An undetermined amount of money was stolen and the investigation is continuing.

Stevens family to block runway at Invermere airport

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Basil and Mildred Stevens announced this week they intend to form a human blockade on the north half of the runway at Invermere Airport this Saturday, March 20, and anyone who attempts to use it could be arrested for trespassing.

According to Basil Stevens, the north end of the runway crosses land he owns. After 23 years of nonpayment for use of the land, he said, he’s had enough.

“It’s quite a mind-boggling thing, really,” Mr. Stevens commented.

The Stevens family, he said in a statement issued this week, are the legal owners of 81 hectares of land used by the Invermere Airport, which is located within the Shuswap Indian Reserve, north of Invermere.

Babin Air, the company which operates the airport, he said, has failed to make any payments to the Stevens family for the use and enjoyment of the airport and the airport runway.

“This matter is currently before the court,” he said.

“So, effective March 19th, 2010, the airport runway

will be blocked until further notice. Anyone attempting to use our portion of the airport runway will be guilty of trespass.”

Both Mr. Stevens and Norm Babin, of Babin Air, are pointing to Shuswap Band Chief Paul Sam and council in the dispute.

“We are the operators of the airport and for the past 20-some years, we’ve been paying the Shuswap Band for use of the airport and our relationship has been fair and good,” Mr. Babin explained. “I feel for the Stevens family if they are not getting what they deserve, but the Department of Indian Affairs have told us that any dealings must go through the chief and council.”

Mr. Babin said he is not sure if it will be business as usual for the airport on Saturday.

“It’s a concern for us,” he said, “especially when it comes to medical evacuations. We don’t knw when flights are going to come in, so there is some liability there.

Calls to Shuswap Chief Paul Sam and the Shuswap Band office were not returned by press time. An office worker said the office was closed for vacations.

Invest in a better diet

A friend of mine who is a physician in Calgary said she is convinced the rise in the prevalence of cancer is linked to a decline in the quality of food we eat.

After watching the Oscar-nominated documentary Food, Inc. — available for rent at Gone Hollywood in Invermere — I tend to believe she’s right.

Although a stroll down the aisles of any grocery store leads you to believe there is a virtual cornucopia of variety available, the film purports the opposite is true. In fact, a dogged pursuit of agricultural efficiency has resulted in less variety, more products engineered in laboratories from fewer ingredients and a factoryfarmed food supply that has the wholesome goodness of nature engineered right out.

Our food supply, the film depicts, is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We now have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli — the harmful bacteria that causes illness and death. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults. Deaths from cancer are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030.

Grocery stores pay extremely close attention to what you buy. Research what you are eating. Find out exactly what is in it, and where and how it is made.

Seek out items that are natural, wholesome, organic and sourced close to home.

Invest in a better diet. The more you buy, the more they will stock. The more they stock, the more they will produce. By doing so, the humble consumer can reverse a trend and create a healthier world.

McKay house is really Hanson house

By Pioneer Staff Earl Hanson of Windermere stopped by this week to inform us that the McKay house depicted in last week’s Historical Lens is actually the Hanson house. Although it was built in 1911 by James Lorenzo McKay, Earl’s parents, Mike and Leah Hanson, lived in it for at least a generation. In fact, Earl said he was born in the room behind the third

window on the south side of the house in 1940 and lived there for 22 years.

The photo, he said, must have been taken during the flood of 1948, not in the early 1920s as noted by the Historical Society.

Earl said you can see his boat tied up out back and noted the car in the side yard was the Hudson Terraplane (manufactured 1932-1939), which was up on blocks at the time.

RCMP responds to park traffic complaints Dear Editor: I would like to respond to the letter in last week’s paper regarding traffic in Kootenay National Park. I can answer some of the questions and concerns and provide a brief explanation on the detachment’s side of this issue.

Kootenay National Park, from Radium Hot Springs to the Alberta border, is in the jurisdiction of the Columbia Valley Detachment and it is our responsibility to patrol and attend accidents.

Highway 93 also falls under the jurisdiction of the East Kootenay Traffic Section, based out of Cranbrook. Prior to Cranbrook taking care of this highway it was the responsibility of the Traffic Section in Golden. We were fortunate for a while to have traffic members living in Invermere and Radium. Back then, the park received a great deal of attention. Those members are no longer living in the valley. One officer retired and another moved from the area.

The detachment does not have the human resources to tackle the problem as often as we would like. Sending a member to patrol the highway, given the immediate priorities and work load each officer has, would be a luxury or something we are able to do when we have some down time. The General Duty Member is taking care of investigations that require immediate attention.

During his working day, this officer actually takes on the new complaints that come in while balancing on average 15-20 other ongoing investigations. We are not a traffic-dedicated unit as Traffic Sections is.

Having said that, there is good news for those that want to see traffic enforcement. (Personally, when I am in my 1981 Corvette, I’m not all that eager to see them. Any other time, I have no problem. Truly, it’s the Corvette’s fault and not the driver.)

The sergeant-in-charge of East Kootenay Traffic Section is well aware of the complaints and concerns about the speeds on this portion of the highway.

He has sent units en masse to patrol the highway and will have the members do frequent blitzes. The units will actually spend several nights staying in the valley. This will continue throughout the year.

The next blitz is this month and it will continue throughout the summer.

The Columbia Valley Detachment also receives additional seasonal funding that allows me to have officers come in on their days off to work seasonal policing. Part of this will go to traffic enforcement in the park. However, I have to save a great deal of this money to send policing to the Radium car show.

East Kootenay Traffic Services also has extra funding and they will also pay for members to work the park on their days off. This was done recently and resulted in 90 charges over a two-day period. Also, East Kootenay Traffic Services works hand-in-hand with the Integrated Road Safety Unit, which is provincially funded in large part by ICBC. You can see that through different ways of tackling the problem, Highway 93 is getting attention. It could always get more attention, but the reality of police work is, we can’t be everywhere all the time.

The letter writer made a suggestion that Parks Canada buck up and throw some money into the pot to allow members to work the highway in their jurisdiction. I can explore that idea, but I think a push from the public to the proper Minister would go a long way.

I hope I was able to answer some of the questions generated by last week’s letter and provide some insight into what the RCMP is doing.

Think twice about reckless behaviour Dear Editor: On Saturday, March 6th, at approximately 10:30 a.m., an adult snowboarder hit my eight-year-old daughter. She had stopped on the hill with her coach to wait for the other children in her group to catch up.

This snowboarder was in a blind spot area and chose to take a jump without a spotter, not knowing that my daughter was stopped on the other side.

He crashed right into her, knocking her down so severely that she has some internal injuries. She has contusions on her liver and one kidney, and internal bleeding. She had to spend the night in the Cranbrook hospital, undergoing several procedures.

My daughter is a high-energy child and loves to be active. She is now unable to participate in all the things she loves to do for a three-month period of time.

She cannot finish her ski season, which means she cannot compete in the final races that she was so excited about. As well, she cannot do any of the following: ride her bike, swim, run, do gymnastics, play on the school playground, participate in gym class or the soccer lessons that she loves so much, or do any other activity that could strain her — all because an adult (who should have known better) chose to ‘catch five seconds of air,’ rather than behave responsibly.

I’m not writing this letter to start a discussion about how snowboarders are a menace, or how they should be banned from the ski hill. I have seen many skiers skiing completely out of control as well.

I’m writing this letter in the hope that another snowboarder or skier will think about what could happen if they choose to behave in an unsafe manner while skiing or boarding.

I’m hoping this information will be taken to heart by other skiers and boarders, and that people will consider the implications of acting in an unsafe and reckless manner while enjoying the ski hill. I’m hoping all skiers and boarders will choose to ski or board in control at all times, and to always use a spotter while jumping.

My daughter is lucky, as her injuries could easily have been more severe. I am grateful that she did not need to have surgery, and that the damage will heal in time. I’m hoping the snowboarder who did this to her reads this. I hope that the next time he has the chance to ‘catch some air’ where he can’t see his landing that he’ll think twice about it. Is five seconds of fun really worth the risk?

Dear Editor: How much solemnity does the vainglorious announcement of a retiring politician deserve?

I would like to loudly protest the decision made by the editor of this paper to apologise for what he said in his wrap-up editorial about our departing Member of Parliament, and good ol’ boy, Jim Abbott.

Once upon, oh about a century ago, newspapers in Canada had big, worldly subjects to discuss on their editorial pages. Subjects like the merits or deficiencies of socialism, nationalism, imperialism, or America’s gunboat Manifest Destiny or Isolationism. Yes, all those big subjects are ancient history now (and seemingly no longer taught in school, so difficult to discuss in a public forum anyway), leaving editors nothing left to discuss but the modest, perhaps slightly tinged with

compromise, but mostly uneventful career of our MP. So I’ll respectfully contradict the obviously under-informed but overly emotive opinions expressed in the Moores’ chastising letter to the editor.

What The Pioneer’s readers need is exactly what you gave them.

Yes, The Pioneer is known for sponge-cake editorials, but now with Ian Cobb gone from The Echo I was pleased to read editorial with some bite in The Pioneer. But there is a qualitative difference between Mr. Cobb’s bite and that of this paper’s editor. Mr. Cobb often gnashed wildly at anything or anyone associated with “the system.” This paper’s editor was biting directly for the bone; and would likely have hit it had it not been for either space limitations, or his sense of appropriate decorum given the auspicious occasion, or both.

Please, dear God, don’t let them name a park after him! Mr. Abbott, not the editor.

Hospital district budget approved: 2.6 percent tax decrease Submitted by Loree Duczek Regional District of East Kootenay The Kootenay East Regional Hospital District has adopted its annual budget for 2010. The total budget is $5.5 million, which includes new approvals for $886,000 in capital expenditures.

“This budget is good news for the citizens of the region,” said hospital board chair John Kettle, who was recently re-elected for another term as chair.

“We will focus on new equipment and facility upgrades which will improve patient care and we are able to accomplish this without increasing taxation.”

The 2010 budget represents a 2.6 percent tax decrease over the 2009 budget.

Some of the capital projects for the coming year include a contribution to a replacement of the cooling tower and a physiological monitor for the Creston Valley Hospital, and a new CT scanner and ultrasound machine for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

Work will continue this year on the Invermere Hospital Emergency Room Upgrade Project.

“This board has strongly supported this project for some time,” Kettle added. “We are thrilled that construction is well underway and look forward to the project’s completion.”

The average tax rate for the hospital district will work out to about $22 on a $100,000 property. As well, Regional District of East Kootenay residents will continue to see a levy for the hospital district on their tax notices to pay off debt incurred before January 1996. The rate for this year will be at about $1.30 on a $100,000 residence.

The hospital district includes the regional district, the towns of Creston and Golden, as well as their surrounding rural communities. The district provides up to 40 percent of the funding for equipment and construction projects at health care facilities, with the remainder covered by Interior Health.

Columbia Valley Arts seeks volunteers Submitted by Silena Ann Ewen Columbia Valley Arts Council Columbia Valley Arts’ Performing Arts Series will be taking a break this spring. There are several reasons for this.

We are currently planning the fall season and are re-evaluating what our community wants and needs in terms of cultural performances.

We have received a lot of feedback this year from the community, and are looking at ways to diversify from exclusively musical acts to a variety of types of performances, including theatre, spoken word, and more local performers.

The fall season is shaping up to be an exciting one, and I hope everyone will come out and enjoy the shows!

Another reason for our brief hiatus is a lack of volunteers.

I’ve really enjoyed my work with the performing arts over the past year, but I’ve also come to realize that without more volunteers, the healthy state of the performing arts in our community is in danger.

We are hoping to use the time this spring to do a little preventative medicine and to find more people interested in bringing the performing arts into our community.

At the moment, we need people for a variety of tasks with various levels of commitment. However, we are looking for individuals who are willing to work with the performing arts committee for at least a full season. This usually involves a commitment of one concert per month.

We are looking for:

• People to distribute posters in Invermere and Fairmont; • Someone to help with publicizing the shows (contacting newspapers and radio, submitting articles); • Someone who is willing to take care of the technical needs of the performers; • People to look for sponsorship for the shows and series; • Ticket takers and distributors.

Volunteers for the performing arts committee are permitted to come to most performances free of charge. This is a wonderful way to be involved in your community and to enjoy the arts in action!

3rd Annual Kain Film Night to show best of mountain films Submitted by Conrad Kain Centennial Society The Conrad Kain Centennial Society is, once again, pleased to host the Conrad Kain Film Night at J. Alfred Laird Elementary School in Invermere. The evening’s entertainment is comprised of films from the best of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, and society spokesperson, filmmaker Pat Morrow, assures movie-goers none of the films have been seen in Invermere before.

Mr. Morrow said he is pleased with this year’s selection of films: “My wife Baiba and I had the pleasure of sitting on the jury of the film festival this year, and can say with confidence that these are top-notch documentaries, with something to suit everyone’s taste.

“We’ll show the core films first, most of which were winners at the film festival. As a bonus, at the end of the program, we’ll leave it to the diehard film buffs who wish to extend their evening by choosing one from three equally enticing films.”

There are two films that stand out in the climbing category — the palm-sweating Welsh Connections showcases a climber’s acrobatic performance on a 100-metre-high wind-swept sea cliff in the United Kingdom. Contrast this with a three-week alpine-style siege on a 6,600-metre granite peak. Samsara meshes imaginative hand-drawn graphics and fast-paced edit style with “in your face” reportage of what it’s like to hang it all out on the near vertical flanks of a Himalayan giant.

Freedom Riders is a mountain bike story set in Jackson Hole, Wyoming — yet another mountain community with tremendous environmental challenges. It combines enough action scenes to hold even the most ardent bikers’ attention, with a back story on how the biking and non-biking communities came together to develop a responsible trail-building plan for a limited land use area. highlands, and Rowing the Atlantic portrays a grim solo crossing of the stormy seas by a British woman with an exceedingly stiff upper lip.

Like the Freedom Riders film, What Would Darwin Think? Man vs Nature offers some valuable lessons to us here in our own small, crowded valley. It’s about tourists and entrepreneurs in the industrial tourism industry “loving” nature to death in the Galapagos Islands.

Mr. Morrow said the event is the perfect opportunity for budding filmmakers to stock up on inspiration for their own projects.

“We’ll be sure to encourage members of the audience, particularly the youth, to begin planning their own ‘mountain-themed’ films for next year’s event since none were submitted this year.”

At intermission, a representative of the Rocky Mountain Section of the Alpine Club of Canada will present door prizes ranging from Alpine Club of Canada mountain hut overnight passes, a backpack, avalanche probe and shovel from Ortovox Canada, an adult pass and instruction/gear loan on the Conrad Kain Climbing Wall at J. Alfred Laird, and copies of the Centennial Edition of Conrad Kain’s biography, Where the Clouds Can Go. Dave’s Book Bar will offer a special discount of 30 percent on Where the Clouds Can Go at the show and in their store in the days leading up to the show.

Funds generated from the film night go toward the maintenance of the climbing wall at J. Alfred Laird, as well as a society-sponsored opportunity for local teens to the pristine granite of Conrad Kain’s mountains.

Doors open at 7 p.m. on March 27th. Films run promptly from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., including intermission. Tickets $15. Children grade 7 and under with parent free of charge. Advance tickets: J. Alfred Laird School, Quality Bakery and Dave’s Book Bar.

New Map Book here before spring break

By Pioneer Staff The 2010 Columbia Valley Map Book is available now, ready for spring break visitors and ahead of schedule for the summer crowds.

And for the first time in its 15-year history, the entire Map Book is now online to download.

This detailed guide book for our beautiful valley includes maps of every community between Golden and Cranbrook.

This year, maps for Edgewater, Radium, Dry Gulch, Invermere, Panorama, Wilmer, Windermere, Fairmont and Canal Flats have all been updated and expanded.

In Invermere, the map now shows roads in Pine Ridge Mountain Resort and Castle Rock Estates.

The map for Wilmer has been completely overhauled; and the Canal Flats map has been doubled to include the beach park.

Now 100,000 copies of the Map Book are whizzing their way to visitor centres in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In the States, tourists in Idaho, Washington and Montana will see the Map Book and choose to visit on their next vacation.

High-quality printing and a handy digest size mean the glossy guide book will wow those who pick it up. Stunning photos show off the valley’s astounding scenery.

The artwork gracing the cover of the 2010 Columbia Valley Map Book is “Kootenay Bull” by Cameron Bird.

The Map Book Cover Project continues this year, with The Artym Gallery selling giclée prints of Kootenay Bull. As in previous years, part of the proceeds from those sales will benefit the community.

This year, those proceeds will go towards equipment upgrades for the Invermere and District Hospital Emergency Room.

The hospital is currently undergoing a $4.3 million redevelopment, and new equipment is needed to bring the emergency room up to a high standard.

The Together for Everyone! campaign is a collaboration between the Health Care Auxiliaries of Invermere, Windermere, Edgewater and Radium Hot Springs, and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

For seniors who are house rich but cash poor, deferring property tax is good option Deferring property taxes can be a great idea for seniors who are house rich but feel cash poor due to hefty property tax bills. Unlike home equity loans or reverse mortgages that need to be paid back monthly or charge high interest, deferring property taxes is a very low-interest way to free up some monthly cash.

The British Columbia Property Tax Deferment Program is a loan program that allows you to defer your annual property taxes on your home if you meet certain eligibility criteria.

The program is available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have lived in British Columbia for at least one year prior to applying for the program. You must occupy the home as your principal residence. Second residences, such as summer cottages or rental properties, do not qualify for tax deferment.

After deducting your Home Owner Grant, you can defer all or part of the unpaid balance of your residential property taxes for the current year. All penalties, interest, previous years’ property taxes, and utility user fees must be paid to your municipal tax collector or the surveyor of taxes (rural properties), as

these cannot be deferred.

You can defer your taxes as long as you own and live in your home and continue to qualify. The deferred taxes must be fully repaid with interest: • before your home can be legally transferred to a new owner, other than directly to your surviving spouse; • upon the death of the agreement holder(s).

If you refinance your home, your mortgage holder may require full repayment of the deferred taxes upon refinancing. You may repay all or part of the deferred taxes, fees and interest at any time without penalty.

To qualify for the Property Tax Deferment Program, you must: • be the registered owner(s) of the home; • be 55 years of age or older, a surviving spouse or a person with disabilities as defined in the Regulations to the Land Tax Deferment Act; • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident under the Immigration Act (Canada); • have lived in British Columbia for at least one year immediately prior to applying;

Only one spouse needs to be 55 or older when the home is registered in both names. To qualify, the owner must turn 55 during the calendar year the application is made.

If you own your home under a registered 99-year lease or have a life-estate interest in your home, you may also qualify for tax deferment.

Simple interest is charged on deferment accounts at a rate not greater than two percent below the prime rate of the province’s principal banker. The interest rate is set every six months by the Minister of Small Business and Revenue.

Community Foundation has been busy Seona Helmer (centre) presented a $4,000 cheque from the Columbia Valley Community Foundation last month to Pat Cope and Karl Conway of the Family Resource Centre. The grant will fund a program on safety in relationships.

It was just one of five recent grants: $1,000 to Columbia Valley Arts for new computer equipment; $2,000 for the Headwaters community facility in Canal Flats; $2,295 for new carpeting at Windermere Valley Child Care Society; and $2,000 for the lending library at the Family Resource Centre.

Great entertainment coming to Relay for Life Submitted by Sheila Tutty Relay for Life Coordinator The Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life is taking place in Invermere from 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 12th to 7 a.m. Sunday, June 13th at the David Thompson Secondary School track.

The wonderful group of individuals organizing this event have been busy putting together some great entertainment and activities for the relay.

We promise to do our part, as long as you do yours. And your part is to come and participate, donate, sponsor, volunteer, and contribute in any way you can.

To kick off this annual event, there will be a Kickoff Party on Thursday, April 15th at Copper Point Golf Club. Brian Schaal and his wonderful staff have again stepped up and will be the hosting sponsor of the Kickoff Party.

I encourage every business out there to donate either a product, service or cash to help support these efforts. We are hoping to shatter the $7,390 that we

Blanket the valley with daffodils this month Submitted by Rosemary Clarke Canadian Cancer Society Daffodils, daffodils everywhere! Not only are they a sign of spring, the Canadian Cancer Society uses the daffodil logo as a symbol of hope for people and their families living with cancer.

This year we are launching an additional focus to our Daffodil Campaign with the introduction of daffodil pins.

They will be available at various venues throughout the valley for a small donation and can be worn on your lapel to show your support for loved ones with cancer.

We hope that all our citizens will wear them up to and including our first annual Daffodil Day on April 9th.

Of course, we continue to offer our live daffodils in bunches of 10 for a donation of $5.

These will be in the stores the weekend of March 25th to March 27th. We hope that you will brighten up your homes and workplaces with these yellow blooms.

The third phase of our Daffodil Campaign encompasses the month of April for our door-todoor volunteers.

The money raised supports the Canadian Cancer Society in the areas of continuing research for better treatments and cures, information and support services and promoting healthier lifestyles and healthy public policy.

Blue Gold to be screened on World Water Day Submitted by Taoya Schaefer Council of Canadians March 22nd is World Water Day and to mark the occasion, the Council of Canadians, Columbia Valley Chapter, is hosting a screening of the film Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop the Corporate Theft of the World’s Water.

The Council of Canadians is Canada’s largest citizens’ organization, and works to protect Canadian independence by promoting progressive policies on fair trade, clean water, energy security, public health care, and other issues of social and economic concern.

We all depend on clean water to survive, and yet in Canada there is no federal leadership to conserve and protect our water. Our fresh water faces crises including contamination, shortages and pressure to export water to the United States through pipelines and diversions. Humans require 20-50 litres per day just to meet our basic needs. Canadians on average use 343 litres per day: • Bathing: 120 litres per day • Toilet: 102 litres per day • Laundry: 69 litres per day • Kitchen/drinking: 34 litres per day • Cleaning: 17 litres per day There is a myth that Canada has a surplus of water. We do have 6.5 percent of the world’s renewable water but most of that flows north, out of reach of 90 percent of our population, which is along the Canada-United States border. Through mismanagement, climate change, and overuse, much of the water we depend on is in jeopardy. Melting glaciers, wetland and forest destruction, and the waste of water in energy production and mining extraction all endanger our water supply.

Between two and 4.5 barrels of water are required to extract one barrel of oil, and 90 percent of that water is permanently removed from the hydrological cycle. The production of one new car and four tires requires 144,633 litres of water.

Blue Gold will be shown at David Thompson Secondary School in room 201 at 7 p.m., free of charge.

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Line Creek Operations Phase II Project Open House and Invitation to Comment Teck Coal (Proponent) is proposing to expand its existing Line Creek Operations (LCO) through the development of two new mining areas, referred to as Burnt Ridge North and Mount Michael (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located within the East Kootenay region in southeastern B.C. immediately north of the existing Line Creek mine. The proposed Project would provide an estimated aggregate total of 52 million metric tonnes of clean coal and would extend overall mine life by approximately 20 years. The proposed Project would not result in an increase in the operational productive capacity of the Line Creek Operations.

The comment period will begin on March 16, 2010 and end at midnight on April 14, 2010. All comments received during this comment period in relation to the Application Information Requirements will be considered.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

After taking public comments into account, the EAO will finalize the Application Information Requirements and issue them to the Proponent.

The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements.

The EAO accepts public comments through the following ways:

The Application Information Requirements will specify the studies to be conducted and the detailed information to be provided by the Proponent in its Application. The EAO has now received draft Application Information Requirements from the Proponent and invites comments on this draft.

In order to provide information about the Application Information Requirements, and to receive comments from the public, the EAO invites the public to attend an Open House. There will be two Open Houses, to be held as follows: at:

If you are unable to attend an Open House, you may still wish to make a written submission. There are 30 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the draft Application Information Requirements.

The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment.

Christians are called to be ambassadors for Christ

By Trevor Hagan Lake Windermere Alliance Church I have been thinking a lot these days about being an ambassador.

When a king or president sends an ambassador to a foreign land, he is taught what to say and what to do.

The ambassador does not promote his own agenda, but he presents the ideals and plans of the one who sent him. He does not act on his own, but is merely a representative of the king or president.

An ambassador’s job is to be a representative of his or her own country, sharing its benefits and opportunities. An ambassador represents, in his or her life, conversation and decisions, everything that is good about home.

The Mirriam-Webster Dictionary defines an ambassador also as an authorized representative or messenger and an unofficial representative travelling abroad as ambassadors of goodwill.

In order to be a good ambassador, I believe it is important to be a good citizen. I am proud to be a Canadian, especially after watching how well we were represented to the world at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. I am also proud to be a citizen of our beautiful Columbia Valley and the District of Invermere.

As I am writing this, my wife Lisa and I are somewhere over Europe on our way to Antalya, Turkey. We have the privilege to represent our country and our community while we are abroad. What a great privilege indeed – not only to be an ambassador of such a place of beauty, but also one of good character and wonderful people.

The Apostle Paul challenges me, in 2nd Corinthians 5:20, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”

As a Christian, I am also an ambassador for Christ.

I am His representative here on Earth until He returns.

Now, is that important? Yes, it is. And here’s why.

As His ambassador, I represent Him. What I do, what I say and the way I act all reflect on the character of God. When the world looks at me, they should not just see me, but see Christ in me. And I should represent Him in such a way that they want to become a Christian themselves. I want to represent Jesus well in all I do and say.

There is a phrase that I have heard over and over again: “If that is the way a Christian acts, then I do not want to be one.” If those who say they are “Christian” would represent who Jesus is and what he has done for the world in a good way, I think the world would be a different place.
