By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A locals’ free day is being held at Panorama Mountain Resort on Saturday, June 26th. The event, celebrating the start of the resort’s summer season, is open to valley residents from Cranbrook to Spillimacheen. “The locals’ free day is another way Panorama is reaching out to the community,” said Jamie Hurschler, the resort’s marketing coordinator. “This is the second time in a little over two months that Panorama has had a special day for locals.” Columbia Valley residents will receive a free pass for the day, giving access to the quad chair leading to mountain bike and hiking trails. Also included is the Howling Wolf mini-golf course and the Fun Zone’s climbing wall, obstacle course and bouncy castle. The free pass does not include bike rentals, golf games at Greywolf or entry to the resort’s hot pools. “This is an excellent opportunity for residents, some of whom might not have been to Panorama re-

cently, to discover what is available in the summertime,” Mr. Hurschler said. “It’s also a perfect occasion to take a free chairlift ride and check out the breathtaking scenic views.” This is the second event for locals since the new owners bought the resort from Intrawest earlier this year. On the last day of the ski season, Panorama also opened up the facilities for free to valley residents. “The new ownership group, made up of mostly local homeowners, wants to see sustainable growth for the resort,” Mr. Hurschler said. “They feel it is important to have a strong relationship with the community in order to do so.” At the end of February the newly formed Panorama Mountain Village Inc. announced they were buying Panorama Resort from Intrawest. The group consists of homeowners and local business people. To claim your free Panorama pass, valid for Saturday, June 26th only, visit one of the resort’s four ticket outlets: the guest services desk, the final gate, the adventure centre or Lusti’s Mountain Outfitters. For passes residents must show valid ID with their address.

Degree program available in Invermere By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Starting in September the College of the Rockies will be offering its first degree fully granted by the college itself. Several years in the making, the bachelor’s degree in sustainable business practices is a big step forward for the college and the region, according to Marilyn Petersen, College of the Rockies’ Dean of Instruction. “When we initiated the process allowing us to grant degrees, there wasn’t a single sustainable business degree,” she said. “Now we are one of very few institutions, if not the only one, offering an undergraduate degree in this topic.” The unique four-year degree program will offer a greater amount of flexibility to students, who can choose where to study and customize their courses. The program allows those studying to combine science or arts modules with the core business, mar-

keting and sustainability elements. Students will be able to learn online, at the Cranbrook campus or take courses from other institutions via video conferencing. As all the core topics are online, most of the work can be completed from anywhere in the valley, with occasional visits to Cranbrook to choose courses. “The majority of the degree can be completed online if students prefer,” Ms. Petersen said. “Another really unique element is that upper level business specialization courses can be taken at another institution.” This will mean a wider range of specializations for those on the course, offering more of a custom-fit degree for each individual. The sustainable business degree was put together in consultation with the community, faculty, focus groups and advisory boards, Ms. Petersen said. The hope is to provide a practical, applied degree producing graduates who can take up jobs locally. “Figures show people tend to find work where

they graduate,” Ms. Petersen said. “If we can keep people here they can apply their talents to businesses in the region.” This is the first time in the college’s 35-year history that it will be able to take undergraduates through an entire study program and award them a College of the Rockies degree at the end. Previously, students could complete the first two years of select courses at the college, but then had to leave the region to finish their studies. The college has also managed to side-step the minimum class requirements, meaning that even if only one student is on the degree program, it will still run. The business program will bring real benefits to the Kootenays, an area where there are fewer degreelevel educated people, said Ms. Petersen. “The number of degree completions here is lower than in other regions,” she added. “This will provide better opportunities for people who live here to have access to post-secondary education.”

Three deaths in 24 hours in the national park By Sally MacDonald Pioneer Staff Two fatal motor vehicle accidents resulted in three deaths in Kootenay National Park last weekend. On Sunday, June 20th at 2:50 p.m., a 42-yearold woman from Calgary was killed in a motorcycle accident. Jody Griffiths was the passenger on a motorbike driven by a 40-year-old Calgary man. The pair were travelling towards Calgary when the driver lost control near Kootenay Crossing. “The driver indicated that the rear tire blew out, causing him to lose control,” said RCMP Staff

Sergeant Marko Shehovac. “The female received severe head injuries that resulted in her death.” Just hours later, at 7 a.m. on Monday, June 21st, a passing semi driver reported seeing a 2006 Mini Cooper upside down in the Kootenay River near Vermillion Crossing. Parks Canada, Columbia Valley RCMP, Banff Fire Department and Alpine Helicopters all responded, but rescue teams found two people deceased inside, with their seatbelts still on. Holly Wagner, 28, and Rodney Layte, 36, both of Calgary, were driving towards Radium, RCMP reported, when the car missed a left curve. “Evidence indicated the vehicle started to lose

control, went into a four-wheel drift and continued on approximately 150 feet off the highway, resting upside down in the river,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said. “Investigation estimates the time of the accident in the early morning. Speed and alcohol are possible factors.” Parks Canada is urging people to take care while driving through the park. “Parks Canada is extremely saddened by these tragic losses and urges visitors to drive cautiously and to respect speed limits and weather conditions as we enter peak periods of park visitation through the busy summer months,” said Omar McDadi, public relations officer.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac Columbia Valley RCMP • On June 17th at 10 a.m., the Columbia Valley detachment responded to an assault complaint in the 2500 block of Mountain View Drive in Fairmont. The assault was domestic in nature and as a result, a 43-year-old male from Invermere has been charged with assault. • On June 18th at 7:30 a.m., police responded to a domestic assault complaint in the 5000 block of Highway 93/95 to investigate a complaint of assault. As a result, a 57-year-old male from Radium was charged with assault. Sitting on a time bomb I remember, once upon a time, long ago, I was trim, slim and athletic. We can also include: pretty stupid. The old saying, “Ignorance is bliss,” suits this story. Long ago I got a call that a box of old dynamite had been found outdoors. It was a hot summer day. I arrived at the scene and, sure enough, found 15 sticks of old dynamite in a cardboard box that was sitting in liquid, a sweaty substance from the dynamite. I think some blasting caps were also in the box. So, I picked the box up, opened the trunk of the police vehicle and figured there was nothing I could really do with them now, so they could stay in the trunk until the end of my shift. Off I go for about six hours, radio on, and off about my business.

When I got back to the office, my first call was to our specialized Explosive Disposal Unit – the bomb squad. I told them what I had, what I did and where I put the dynamite. All I got at the other end was, “You what?” “You did what?” “You put them where?” They then went on to explain that I was sitting on what can be described as nitroglycerine and any spark could cause a massive explosion. The next question they asked, I didn’t really want to answer: “Where is the police car now?” Of course, it was parked in the underground parking lot of the detachment. Where else? Duh. The loud thump I heard over the phone was no doubt the guy’s head hitting the desk. I think several times. Today, they would probably tell me to evacuate the building and they would be on their way. But since I was pretty much a rookie and there was not much invested in me at the time, I was told to get in the car, get it out of the underground lot, not to bump into anything, and park it in a safe, isolated area. I told my fellow brave officers of the predicament and asked if anyone wanted to go for a ride. All of a sudden they had places to be other than the office. They were probably all watching from a distance, taking odds. Shortly after this, they sent me on an explosives course. I passed.

Invermere’s new rescue vehicle is ready for your inspection By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff The entire community is invited to kick the tires on the community’s new rescue vehicle at Invermere Fire and Rescue’s open house on Sunday, June 27th, from 1-4 p.m. “This will be an opportunity for everyone — children and adults — to see the new rescue vehicle as well as have a tour of the hall and the other fire vehicles,” Invermere Fire Chief Roger Ekman commented.

The entire community pitched in to purchase the vehicle after the Lions Club organized the Road to Rescue Campaign to raise funds for the vehicle. One of the unsung heroes who helped the effort was Brad Munroe of Invermere’s Wildlands Eco-Forestry and Wildfire Prevention. Although he never appeared in a cheque presentation photo, Mr. Munroe and Wildlands Eco-Forestry donated $1,000 to the cause. A complete list of all the donors will be on display at the open house.

END OF AN ERA — Rosemary Oaks (left) and Eva Coles have some fun after a hot summer’s day at the market. The duo are stepping down after 10 years of organizing the Invermere Farmers’ Market. Photo submitted

Tenth and final season for Farmers’ Market organizers

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The Invermere Farmers’ Market opens for its 10th season tomorrow, Saturday June 26th — and it is the final year in charge for Eva Coles and Rosemary Oaks. Rosemary, who works for the Regional District of East Kootenay, and Eva, from the Akisqnuk health centre, established the market together in 2000. “It’s a hard one — it’s going to be tough to leave it,” Rosemary said with a lump in her throat. “When I drive by at the end of market season and see the empty streets, it feels like something’s missing. I can’t imagine stepping away for good.” The initial idea for a local market came from Rosemary visiting farmers’ markets as a child in Ontario. After nine years in the valley, she met Eva in 2000 and the duo decided to try and set up a local market. Over the last decade the two women have poured hours of their time into registering vendors, promoting the event and making sure days run smoothly. “It has been our baby from the start,” Rosemary said. “But both of us are at different stages in our lives, plus we are out of town a lot and it does take up time.”

The market runs every Saturday from tomorrow to September 4th in downtown Invermere. It is a make, bake or grow event, with most items either handcrafted or grown in the region. “About half of the items are made or grown locally in the valley,” Rosemary said. “We also have items from a bit further afield like Kimberley and Cranbrook.” Over the last 10 years the market has grown from a dozen vendors to more than 55. On offer are handmade arts and crafts, including jewellery, clothing and artwork, plus plenty to tickle the tastebuds, with baked goods, preserves and candies, as well as fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and eggs. “We’re hoping to do some fun things on site again this year too,” Rosemary said. “In the past we have had musicians and demonstrations from artists.” New additions for 2010 include women’s clothing stalls, stained glass and a henna artist decorating hands and feet with traditional designs. As for who will be taking over next year’s market — Rosemary and Eva are not yet sure. “We are looking to see who is interested in taking over,” Rosemary said. "We hope to have some people step forward before the end of the summer season."

College helps us diversify

Historical Lens

By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor I don’t usually editorialize on this week’s headlines for fear of exposing a bias in our coverage of breaking news. However, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to congratulate an organization for making a positive move toward a more diverse economy. Communities across western Canada desperately need to diversify their economies and the Columbia Valley is no exception. Never is this more evident than when one (forestry) or two (real estate development) key industries linger in the doldrums. In a non-diverse economy, the toll of closures and job cuts are compounded by reductions in provincial resources and funding. Attracting new corporate investments to diversify your economy, however, can be a bit of a chess match. The College of the Rockies laid a crucial piece of the economic diversification puzzle this week – a masterstroke, really. Starting in September the College of the Rockies will be offering its first degree fully granted by the college itself. The move will help stem the brain drain of having to send our best and brightest far and wide for their post-secondary degree – usually never to return, except for holidays. Secondly, and brilliantly, the college chose to award its first degree, a Bachelor of Business Administration, in Sustainable Business Practices. In an area where the key industries challenge sustainability, they couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate starter. Lastly, the move will assure prospective corporate investors a steady supply of ready managers to help them establish and grow their businesses in the Columbia Valley. Way to go, College of the Rockies!

Ellis also climbed Mt. Nelson

Dear Editor:

Thank you for printing my letter about Charles D. Ellis, but I forgot to mention that he was the first person to climb Mt. Nelson. His account of it was published in the Canadian Alpine Journal in

1911. His reckoning of the altitude of the mountain was, by barometrical reading, 12,123 feet. It was later proved, by triangulation, to be 10,772 feet. Ray Crook, Invermere

Correction: Dr. Coy pictured in last week’s Historical Lens Thanks to everyone who wrote in, called or stopped by to point out that the man cutting the ribbon in last week’s Historical Lens photo is Dr. Filmer E. Coy. MLA James Chabot is the man in the centre

Marko outs himself as target of jeer Dear Editor: The following jeer appeared in the last paper: “Jeers to the guy that used an immature and distasteful joke on the blind presenter at our last chamber meeting. Cheers to the presenter!” The guy the unnamed author refers to is me. A while back, around Christmas time, in my RCMP report, I made an innocent but sarcastic comment about keeping the car doors locked. Unfortunately the person who was the victim was known in the community and easily identified. He took some heat and jabs in regards to my comment. This person phoned me up and took me to task. I listened to his comments and concluded that he was right, I was wrong and this person accepted my apologies. I have nothing but respect for how he approached this situation and how we dealt with it. Not so with the unnamed author who targeted me in his jeer. I find that many of the jeers are general: jeers to people who don’t pick up after their dogs, jeers to Alberta drivers, etc. The author of this jeer wishes to remain anonymous, but wishes to go public and clearly identifies his target for those that were in attendance at this meeting. I choose not to take the same privilege. The intended target of my farfetched — somewhat illegal — scenario was to put the heat on my friend Al who was seated next to me at the Chamber meeting. I hoped those in attendance would pick up on Al’s name, instead of mine,

and he would have to do the time, so to speak! Hence, I identified myself as Al from Home Hardware. At no time was it my intent, nor any thought, to make a joke towards the guest speaker. It was far from my mind. I was surprised that someone took it that way and now I am concerned that many others may have seen it that way. I hope not. I hold myself accountable for my actions and words and as the Detachment Commander that accountability bar remains high. My actions and words impact my staff and the community members as a whole. I couldn’t care less what the criminal element might think of me, but I certainly do work at gaining the respect from the citizens I serve. Regardless, the mere fact that one person viewed it in the manner as described is sufficient enough reason to apologize to the author and those that also might have taken offence. I have followed up with the Chamber and I will be following up with the guest speaker to ensure there is an understanding of my intent and apology if he took offence. My understanding is the guest speaker appeared to understand the jest of my intent when he spoke with an organizer. A follow-up call will clear things up. I trust and hope that my explanation is accepted by the others in attendance.

Hockey skills program for J. Alfred Laird school By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff J. Alfred Laird Elementary School is adding hockey to its sports program starting in September, and needs donations of hockey equipment. Four Hockey Canada Bendina Miller Skills Academy classes per week will be added to the school’s curriculum in the new academic year. These one-hour sessions will allow students to develop their skills on the ice at Invermere’s arena. “J. Alfred Laird School was approached about the enhanced hockey program by some interested parents,” said Bendina Miller, Superintendent of Rocky Mountain School District No. 6. “Some staff were already thinking of approaching physical education differently next year, with more focus on target heart rate and fitness, and this academy fits with the focus on learning.” The program, which will run from September to March, will work to develop technical hockey skills, from skating to hand-eye coordination. Two sets of two weekly classes will be offered, one set for grades five and six and the other for grades six and seven. The classes are open to any pupils from grades five to seven, and any skills needed, including how to skate, will be taught. “We wanted to make the program accessible to anyone,” said Stacy Decosse, J. Alfred Laird’s viceprincipal. “We don’t want to turn away anyone who hasn’t learned to skate or those without hockey gear.”

The sessions will be taught by J. Alfred Laird staff, who were already working to develop physical education programs at the school. The aim is to extend physical education classes to hourly sessions each morning, to get students in the best mental state for learning. “The Hockey Canada Skills Academy fits with current brain research that clearly shows exercise in the mornings enhances learning,” Ms. Miller said. “We believe by offering physical activity for 40 to 60 minutes each morning, we are helping create an optimal learning state for the brains of our students.” The school is also introducing the use of heart monitors in physical education classes to track students’ fitness progress. Current health research says that exercising at between 60 and 80 percent of your maximum heart rate is the most beneficial. As each pupil has a different level of physical fitness the school says heart monitors will allow for a more targeted physical education program. Fund-raising for the heart rate monitors is already underway. “Heart rate monitors let people know where they are at physically,” Ms. Decosse said. “Once everyone can monitor their rate we will know how to move forward for each individual student.” Until now, David Thompson Secondary School was the only school in the Kootenays offering the Hockey Canada Skills Academy program. To support this new sports program, J. Alfred Laird School is asking for donations of unwanted hockey gear of all sizes by the end of June. The school will be applying for grants over the summer to cover additional equipment costs. For more information contact the school at 250342-6232.

Movie Review: She’s Out of My League Reviewed by Dave Sutherland She’s Out of My League is a funny movie. I was prepared to dislike it, having seen too many romantic comedies in the recent past that were neither romantic nor comedic. The story is familiar; a nerdy guy falls for a hottie, but believes he has no chance whatsoever with her, due to said nerdiness. Jay Baruchel plays the nerd, Kirk, the only sensitive member of a family of lunkheads, who dreams of flying, but works in airport security. His sense of selfconfidence has been demolished, thanks in part to his ex-girlfriend, who is often at his house with her new boyfriend as she likes his family better than hers. Eve Archer plays Molly, the object of Kirk’s affec-

tions. She is a near-perfect child of privilege, a beautiful, successful ex-lawyer turned event planner, whose heart has, of course, been recently broken. Kirk and Molly “meet cute” at the airport when she loses her phone. There’s no way a romance between these two should work out, but you know it will. A lot of the humour in She’s Out of My League is gentle and arises from Kirk and Molly’s initial encounters and awkward first dates, as they are put through their paces. It’s the kind of funny that puts a smile on your face and keeps it there. But that kind of funny is then contrasted with the blunt, utterly crude kind of humour you are probably used to from Judd Apatow’s recent movies. It’s laughout-loud kind of stuff. The two kinds of funny are a winning combination here; this was one of the most

amusing movies I’ve seen in a while. The supporting cast sports some familiar faces and were all enjoyable, but two in particular stood out for me. T. J. Miller, as Kirk’s friend Stainer, and Krysten Ritter, as Molly’s friend Patty, are hilarious. Their jawdropping remarks to each other may have you spitting out your popcorn. She’s Out of My League was written by Sean Anders and John Morris, both of whom also wrote the recent Hot Tub Time Machine (filmed in Fernie), and was directed with comic aplomb by Jim Field Smith.

ART LOVERS — Left to right: artist Bill Croft, Tour of the Arts committee member Louise Gagne, artist Sandra Brown, Radium’s Mayor Dee Conklin and Radium Resort’s Theresa Molto, Wilda Schab and Brent Taylor.

Arts tour coming in August By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The third annual Tour of the Arts, a self-guided tour showcasing local artists, is taking place this summer in and around Radium Hot Springs. There are six tour sites, showing off some of the valley’s most beautiful gardens, and allowing more than 50 local artists to display and sell their work. The tour, on August 1st, will visit five ranches and local homes, ending with a reception at Radium Resort’s Springs Golf Club. “Several artists will be at each location,“ said Louise Gagne, a member of the Columbia Valley Arts Council and the tour committee. “We will have demonstrations, discussions and participation with the artists — it will be a fabulous day out.” At Radium Resort’s Springs Golf Course, a reception, with food and drinks, will take place to round off the day. There will also be a prize draw for those who have had their “passports” stamped at all five sites. “A celebration of the artistic community is more than just part of our corporate responsibility,” said Wilda Schab, General Manager of Radium Resort. “This is something we really wanted to be involved with . . . we want to invite the world to see the beauty we have here.” Also at the Springs will be featured artists from the Purcell Mountain Painters group. Sandra Brown,

a former counsellor who moved to the valley in 2001, will be displaying her portraits, floral and animal paintings. Bill Croft, a retiree from Windermere, who has been involved with all three tours, is showing some of his landscapes. “I’m not expecting huge sales but promoting the arts in the valley is the most important thing,” he said. “Tourism is a driving force of the valley so anything that promotes the arts, both visual and performing, is wonderful.” This is the northernmost stop so far for the Tour of the Arts. Last year’s event was held in and around Invermere, Windermere and Wilmer, prompting organizers from the Columbia Valley Arts Council to showcase another valley town this year. “Last year the tour was based further south,” said Radium Hot Springs’ Mayor, Dee Conklin. “Radium is not known for the arts, but we have a growing artistic community and we’re really keen to show people what Radium has to offer.” Passports for the tour go on sale on Saturday June 26th, at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, Village Arts, Radium Resort, N’Deco Interiors and Smoking Waters Coffee Company. Prices are $20 for adults, $10 for 13- to 18-yearolds, and free for children 12 and under. All proceeds go to support the Columbia Valley Arts Council.

The foam splash-down and the wife-carrying race are already on the schedule. Bratwurst and onions, beef-on-a-bun, coleslaw, beans and corn on the cob, prepared under supervision of Anne Riches, will be served at reasonable prices.

Entry fees are still frozen at the same level they were for the first Fall Fair in 2000 – $3 for adults, $2 for children aged six to 16, and kids under six free. It is a great day’s entertainment for $10 for a family of four! This is the association’s major fund-raiser for the year, and proceeds go to maintaining and upgrading Windermere Community Hall. So mark your calendar for Saturday, September 11th, and plan to be there. For more info, see www. windermerecommunity.ca, call 250-341-3383, 3423550, or e-mail justforu@telus.net. Book a space at the fair by calling Jo-El at 250-342-3550.

BC Transit held meetings in Invermere this month to review services provided by the valley’s transport system. Around 25 people attended two meetings, on June 8th and 9th, to discuss the bus service and solutions to the valley’s transit difficulties. “The Columbia Valley transit system is a relatively new one and we’re using a bit of a ‘try it and see’ approach,” said BC Transit’s Alison McDonald. “We put a new system in place and then we go back a couple of years later to see what works and what doesn’t.” The service, operating since February 2008, has a single bus with a north and south route, running Monday to Friday, from Edgewater to Canal Flats. There is also an on-request service during the middle of the day. “One of the great challenges you have here is a long valley,” said Shannon Moskal, Community Services Manager for the Regional District of East Kootenay. “You can’t supply a service to both ends at the same time with one bus.” The main difficulties suggested at the meetings were regarding practicality. The infrequency of buses, lack of public information, and inconvenient bus times were all discussed.

“We need to define a clear community goal in order to serve it,” said Kevin Schubert, BC Transit’s Regional Transit Manager. “If it makes sense to change services, we will — our aim is to service the community.” Currently the service, costing $240,000 a year, is targeted at commuters. The province provides 57 percent of funding and 43 percent is locally financed, through taxes and bus fares. BC Transit sets the routes and times and an operator based in Golden provides the service. The base in Golden was discussed, with some wanting a local service provider, which would stop the bus running empty from the north. “The ownership of the process and system doesn’t feel like it belongs to our communities,” said Ken Wilder, of Panorama Mountain Resort. “It’s challenging for people to get their heads around bringing in a bus from Golden.” The main conclusion from the meetings was that more than one bus is needed for the valley, preferably from a local provider. In the meantime the current service should be publicized more and a weekend bus put in place. BC Transit will put this feedback into a performance review, to try and improve services in the valley. For more information, visit BC Transit’s website at www.bctransit.com.

Fireworks kick off Canada Day party Submitted by Steve Mantyka Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley The Kinsmen Canada Day fireworks will blast off one minute after midnight on Wednesday night. The Kinsmen Club is proud to host the annual display, which will be launched from the gravel pit below Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena in Invermere, as a great start to celebrating this great country. Our valley residents and business owners’ contributions make this event the success it is every year. Without your support, the fireworks would not happen. We have mailed out letters asking for financial assistance and have change boxes around many stores in Invermere, so please help us bring the celebration together by contributing. Many thanks to those who have already donated. It is greatly appreciated. Home Hardware has once again offered up their

barbecue for the Kinsmen to raise money for the yearly fireworks. We will host the barbecue on Saturday, June 26th from 11 a.m. until we run out of bratwurst and hot dogs. Join us for lunch and donate to the cause. Contributions are always welcome – they are never too late. You can mail a donation to the Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley, Box 2039, Invermere, B.C., V0A 1K0, or contact me at 250-342-2445 (work) or 250-342-3825 (home). Our community is always supportive, no matter the cause, no matter the club. The Kinsmen Club is proud of the support we receive for this project and all our fund-raisers throughout the year. Our community gives like no other, so please celebrate Canada Day safely and enjoy the fireworks. Let us know you enjoy them and consider a donation to keep them going every year. We have something to celebrate, and that’s truly Canadian.

WOW – The Invermere fireworks show is always spectacular. Watch from the arena, Lakeview Road or the lake.

Mountain Mosaic Festival brings the arts to all ages Submitted by Jackie Anderson Festival Organizing Committee Mountain Mosaic Festival of the Arts is a free festival that takes place at the Pynelogs Cultural Centre and adjacent park on the banks of the beautiful Lake Windermere. On Thursday, July 1st, follow the Canada Day parade through downtown Invermere to the festival grounds where the celebrations begin at noon. The event will kick off with Canada Day speeches, cutting of the Canada Day cake, and singing of the national anthem. Live entertainment will follow, with the Cops for Kids boat race finishing off the day. The goal of the festival is to inspire, create and celebrate performing and visual art to children, youth and adults in the Columbia Valley on Canada Day. Festival-goers are promised a circus atmosphere complete with workshops, children’s activities, art exhibits, musical entertainment, local performers and visual art. Entertainment on the Home Hardware stage begins at 12:15 p.m. and features Unhooked, Kootenay Baton Konnection, Shuswap Dance Troupe, LuLu, Petals and Toro the clowns from Calgary, Rachel Mari Kimber, and the local Irish dance group. The finale of the afternoon is the Cops for Kids boat judging and racing in which teams compete for the coveted bragging rights to beat Al Miller and his boat crew, winners of the 2009 competition. A host of other activities are ongoing throughout the event. Kids can be transformed with face painting,

hairdos and tattoos. They can create a craft with the Friends of the Invermere Public Library who will be hosting the Year of Diversity tent, or they can create their own mosaic to take home. Snag golf, miniature bowling and the Purcell Mountain Painters will also be on hand to entertain. Be sure to pick up your activity passport from volunteers in red shirts. Participate in activities, fill out the passport, put your name in the box and there will be draws for Dairy Queen treats. An assortment of food will be available. The Rotary Club and Cops for Kids along with the Legion will be serving up hot dogs, smokies, beef on a bun, and taco salad. The Bighorns football team will be on hand with beef jerky and popcorn, Sonshine Children’s Centre and the Summit Youth Centre will have baked goods for sale, bannock will be available, and Pynelogs Café will be serving lunch. Jugs of complimentary water donated by Back Door Wine Cellar will be on hand to refill your water containers. Our sincere thanks to the major sponsors of the festival, Bob and Barb Shaunessy. Sponsors supporting the festival include Columbia Valley Arts Council, Panorama Mountain Village, Kootenay Savings Credit Union, Columbia Basin Trust, and the federal government Canada Day grant. Other partners include the Invermere Business Committee, District of Invermere, Home Hardware, and Valley Alley. The festival is still looking for volunteers to help out with this fun event. To get involved, contact Kim Turgeon at 250-341-3770.

Wave your flag during the parade By Pioneer Staff Hundreds of people will line Invermere’s 7th Avenue on Thursday morning to see our national pride on display. The annual Canada Day parade is a chance for valley businesses and organisations to show their true colours and impress the crowds with their floats. At 10:30 a.m., the parade will leave its corral point at Pothole Park and proceed down 7th Avenue all the way from AG Valley Foods to Angus McToogle’s.

On the way, onlookers will wave and children will jump for the candy thrown from the floats. The parade will reach the edge of downtown and keep going, turning onto 15th Street then 7A Avenue on its way across the railroad tracks to Kinsmen Beach. Its arrival there signals the start of the Mountain Mosaic Festival. You can still enter a float in the parade, which is organised by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #71. Call 250-342-4242. Marshalling for the parade begins at 8:30 a.m. at Pothole Park and be there before 9:30 a.m., because that’s when judging starts!

Build-a-boat race raises money for kids By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Columbia Valley police officers are inviting the public to join their Canada Day boat-building challenge at Kinsmen Beach. Three-person teams must work together to build their lake-going craft in under three hours, starting at 12 p.m. Then at 3.15 p.m. these unique vessels will be launched on Lake Windermere to race. “We have opened the contest to the public this year to increase participation,” said Constable Derek Balderston, who is organizing the event. “The RCMP detachment will put in two to three teams and I expect several of the fire departments will be joining us.” This is the second annual boat-building challenge, which is open for the public to enter for the first time this year. Boats will be made with supplies from Home Hardware, where each team will have $100 credit to

choose their materials, excluding seasonal items like inflatable boats. The race will consist of a 100-metre paddle out to a buoy and back, cheered on by spectators on the beach. “Last year’s race was a lot of fun,” Constable Balderston said. “As far as the success of the boat surviving, well that depends on the design. Most teams get a little wet.” There will be trophies for the first-place winners, best team costumes and the cheapest-built boat to actually make it through the course. The boat race is one of two main fund-raising events the Columbia Valley RCMP is organizing to raise money for the Cops for Kids charity. In September, Constable Balderston and 30 other RCMP officers from south-eastern B.C. will set out on a 1,000-kilometre bike ride. “This will be my third year participating in the Cops for Kids bike ride,” Constable Balderston said. “What can I say? I am a sucker for punishment!”

The 10-day ride sets off from Osoyoos on September 10th, passing through Cranbrook, Radium and Golden on the way to the finish line in Kelowna on September 19th. All money raised will go to Cops for Kids, a charitable organization started by members of the Kelowna RCMP in 2001. It is dedicated to helping children in crisis across the southern interior. “I support Cops for Kids because it has local impact,” Constable Balderston said. “Money raised from the charity benefits families in need in the south-east of British Columbia. Specifically, money and aid has been distributed in the Columbia Valley.” If you would like to enter a team, registration is $90 and the deadline to sign up is June 29th. Teams interested in joining can contact Derek Balderston at derek.balderston@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or 250-341-1192, or register at Invermere Home Hardware.

Pioneer Classifieds s obituary s Donald E. Arnold (Prairie Gofr) April 10, 1934 - June 22, 2010 The Arnold/Beingessner families regret to announce that Don fell asleep in death early Tuesday morning, June 22, 2010. He moved his family from Saskatchewan to the beautiful Windermere Valley that he loved in 1975. Even though the boy left the prairies, you couldn’t take the prairies out of the boy. Many were acquainted with his handle, Prairie Gofr. Don worked as a hairstylist in Invermere for many years. Always quick witted and eloquent in speaking, Don was delightful company to many friends and relatives. Communication was always important to Don and to those of you who he took the time to write, you must know that he worked very hard to do so. He held a pencil in each hand to tap out meaningful messages when his fingers no longer went where he told them to. Don’s advice in life was “never put things off”, and “you can never be wrong by being kind”. Our dear friends from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses came regularly to give encouragement and practical help and left feeling refreshed by Dad’s upbeat attitude. Don was so appreciative of his loving family, friends, many caregivers and Dr Chris Gooch. Dad had strong faith in the Bible promises, “He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.” (Revelation 21:4) He is sadly missed by his loving wife Klara (56 years), daughter Sandra Beingessner (Marty), grandson Elijah Beingessner and son Monte Arnold (Rhonda), and many close friends and relatives. We look forward to greeting Don back to perfect health in the paradise promised by our Creator in John 5:28, 29, “All those in the memorial tombs will . . . come out.” A public memorial service is scheduled for June 30 at 2pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at #1 Holland Creek Estates, between Invermere and Windermere.

There’s a reason they’re called “CLASSY”. Pioneer Classifieds…

Columbia Headwaters Community Forest: Part 3 of 6, a local community forest Submitted by Rick Hoar, Chairman, Columbia Headwaters Community Forest As mentioned in our previous newsletter, a community forest is not just another license to harvest timber for dimensional lumber. Many communities across B.C. have found their community forest to be an exciting new tool for community development. These forests are being managed socially, ecologically, economically and for spiritual sustainability, which is resulting in both monetary and non-monetary benefits for the community. Gaining an agreement from the province to have a community forest is not by any means easy. A community must first receive permission from the Minister of Forests. Once a community shows an interest in a community forest, a minimum of three years is invested to secure an agreement. If successful, a community gains the exclusive right to harvest Crown timber and may also be granted the right to manage the area for non-timber forest product. Agreements may be granted for a period of 25 years, which are renewable. So what is the area being discussed locally? In order to arrive at an area for discussion, five criteria were thought to be important to our community: • Watersheds, that have community importance.

TERRITORY – The proposed forest could stretch from Radium to Canal Flats. • viewscapes, critical to or highly valued by the community; • fire interface forests, whose management could have significant bearing on community wildfire risk;

First of all – you believe in technology. Second – you want a role in fostering high tech jobs this network can bring to the Valley. With those two guiding principles, you will be ready to maintain the financial side of the business. With a head full of numbers, preferably some MicroSoft Dynamics – GP experience and post secondary training in accounting or bookkeeping, you will further your career at fibre optic speed. Reporting to our Group Controller, you are ready to join and strengthen our team with your personality and attention to detail. If this describes you, email your resume to hr@nanomail.ca. • directly adjacent to the community or for which the community feels a sense of connection and stewardship; • capable of supporting the community’s intended use over the long term. These five criteria were applied to the land features around all communities from the Radium Hot Springs to Canal Flats, resulting in a study area as shown on the accompanying map. As the communities become engaged through discussions and community meetings, the final size will become clearer. With the Steering Committee members going out into the communities to talk about a community forest, it is important that key features of community support are established: passion for obtaining an agreement and ultimate management; leadership in all areas; participation by First Nations and non-First Nations local people; a sense of community; pragmatic local knowledge for guidance and historical value; holistic viewpoint. The next newsletter will deal with governance models. Check us out at www.chwcf.com.

Turn your creativity loose as you manage and review cabinet layout and design, with inside sales support. We are looking for a goal oriented person who is the best of the best. If you are looking for more than a job, more than just a paycheck, you are the team player we are looking for. You will have previous Cabinet Sales experience, and a proven record. The Green Zone: golf carts for crash carts By Harold Hazelaar Pioneer Columnist The Lake Windermere Lions will host the 7th annual Lions Golf Day on July 6th. You can play Copper Point for $60, including a cart. The green fee is the money we get to use. Our dear pal, Gordon Campbell, insisted that he needs his share, but after that, it’s all ours! This year, the recipient of the entire day’s proceeds will be the Emergency Department of the Invermere Hospital. We are calling this year’s event “Golf Carts for Crash Carts”. Crash carts are storage carts that have emergency medical equipment on them and

can be easily wheeled from one bed to the next in the emergency room. We hope to raise enough money to purchase five or six of these critically important pieces of emergency medical equipment. No special golfing talent is required. You can play with your friends and enjoy a great time out on the course. There are no special rules nor are there any pressures to perform, except on the three holes where you can win a $5,000 cash prize with a hole-in-one. All you need to do is this: phone 250-341-3392 and tell Copper Point staff you want to play in Lions Golf Day on July 6th. They will book your tee-time and take your money. Then all you need to do is show up and have fun.

Along with the green fee money, the Lions are generously supported by the local business community by way of hole sponsorship. Over the past six years, you the golfer and our business supporters have helped us raise over $70,000 for various projects we have undertaken such as the Rescue Vehicle and Lions Park on 12th Avenue in Invermere. Thanks for your support and we sincerely hope to see you at the golf course on July 6th. Let’s all help save a life or two or more. The Green Zone quote of the week is by Bobby Jones: “The difference between a sand trap and water is the difference between a car crash and an airplane crash. You have a chance of recovering from a car crash.”

FAITH

Parents are teachers of faith Although my father does not live here in the valley, I want to tell you all that he is my hero. I grew up in north central Alberta and Dad was always working, it seemed, but I remember that he would spend time with us kid. When I was a Boy Scout, dad became a Scout Master and we spent time together there as well as at home. He and Mom would take us camping and I remember my childhood as a time filled with love. The fifth Commandment is, “Honour your father and mother.” It follows the Commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” When I think of my faith life and the absolutely vital part my parents had in forming it, I feel a great sorrow for many young people today who will perhaps never have the opportunity to grow in their faith because parents today are so busy with the work of providing for the family. Or perhaps the sports leagues are demanding that the kids be at practice instead of going to Sunday ser-

vice. That was not as common when I was growing up, or maybe I was just told that Church was the priority in this family. Sports and leisure were important and had their place but very seldom were we allowed to miss Mass. My dad would miss only because of work, and once I remember that he missed Mass because, as he explained to his mom, he had to put food on the table. If I remember correctly, Grandma then told him that Mom had received her First Communion that Sunday – I don’t remember him ever missing again. When I was 18, he and I joined the Knights of Columbus together. He shared in my joy when I was ordained, first a Deacon and then a Priest. When I later struggled in my vocation, he was there, with Mom, to support me and help me recover my dignity and self-respect. You call me Father when we meet. It is my role and obligation to teach the faith at all times. Like my own father – and yours – I am not perfect in doing it. But our Father in Heaven uses even those moments of failure and wants you to know that you are his loved, his beloved child from the very moment you were conceived in your mother’s womb. To my Dad and all fathers, you are your children’s heroes. You are also tasked with being their first teachers in the faith. I pray for you in this God-given role.
