$22,000 raised for hospital Fun, family, friends and fund-raising was the name of the game at the Celebrating Health Care Golf Tournament Saturday on the Ridge Course at Copper Point. Event sponsor Kootenay Savings announced it would renew it’s commitment to the event for another three years. Beginning with the inaugural tournament in 2008, Kootenay Savings, and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health have raised over $67,000 for the redevelopment of the Invermere Hospital emergency department. Agriculture chief tours region

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Lands, Steve Thomson, was in Invermere on Friday, August 20th, to speak with local farmers and take a tour of the area’s notable agricultural projects. Mr. Thomson visited the region to discuss ways the agricultural industry can exist in harmony with other land users and the land itself. Before arriving he went on a tour with Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett in Fort Steele, afterwards visiting Invermere’s community greenhouse, Lot 4616 and Grizzly Ridge Properties — stopping for lunch at Zehnder’s Farm. “Here in B.C. we have the most diverse agricultural industry,” Mr. Thomson said. “We need to look at what producers are facing in each sector, with a lot of focus on environmental standardizing.” The minister was guided around the farm by

rancher Dave Zehnder, who highlighted the need to create a balance between ecology and agriculture. He also spoke of the local pressure to develop housing and recreation areas on agricultural land. “We’re all trying to do the same thing on the same piece of land,” Mr. Zehnder said. Another topic was the East Kootenay Conservation Program (EKCP), which uses a valley-wide, annual $20 parcel tax to support ecosystem conservation. Program Manager Wayne Stetski called the EKCP “exciting and unique in B.C.”, saying conservation covenants could be one step in the right direction for preserving the valley’s delicate ecosystems. “If the agreement is there, when land is taken from the Agricultural Land Reserve funds would go out to pay for ecological goods and services,” he explained. The minister concluded his visit with a pledge to try and put policies in place that will support conservation and offer incentives to local farmers to be more environmentally friendly.

• On August 20th, police were dispatched to a call on Highway 93 about three kilometres east of Radium Hot Springs in the Kootenay National Park. They were told that a motorcycle had hit a moose. Police attended, with Emergency Support, Health and Safety (EHS) personnel and Parks Canada employees already on scene. Police spoke with witnesses who said they were traveling east on the highway when they saw oncoming lights come into their lane and start to “go crazy”. They stopped and saw a motorbike on the ground and approximately 30 feet away a man, also on the ground. They called 911, telling dispatchers they thought the man hit a moose because there was hair on his chin. The rider was wearing a helmet and full leathers. EHS requested a police escort to the 4 Mile Gravel Pit in the national park to meet up with STARS, as the rider needed to be air lifted to Calgary. The rider was air lifted by STARS with facial injuries, a broken jaw, and neck pain. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. • On August 21st at 2:00 a.m. RCMP were dispatched to a loud party in the 4000 block of Timber Place Way, Windermere. The man making the complaint reported that there was a party with loud music in the home across from his. Police spoke with the property owner who said that he would turn the music down and that most people were leaving. Police saw 10 to 15 people in the property. The owner assured police that there would be no further problems — none were reported. • On August 21st, officers received a request for help from Radium Volunteer Fire Department of a vehicle on fire five kilometres north of Radium Hot Springs. Police found a 1996 Toyota Camry Station Wagon, which had been on fire. The vehicle was on the pullout on the west side of Highway 95. Both Edgewater and Radium Hot Springs Fire departments attended. The vehicle was no longer on fire when Police arrived on scene. Police spoke with the driver who

stated he had an oil leak and was taking it to an appointment to have the leak fixed. Clearly the driver did not make the appointment. Nobody was injured. • On August 21st, RCMP received a report of mischief to a 2008 Black Volkswagen Rabbit. The car was parked overnight on 7th Avenue, Invermere, when the damage occurred. Flower planters were taken from outside the nearby stores and placed on the car. A couple were held down with bike locks that were cut. Flowers were taken out of a planter and placed on top of the vehicle as well. The Rabbit suffered minor dents and scratches. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crimestoppers. • On August 22nd, police were dispatched to a report of a black bear on the porch of a house. The owner told police that outside his home, on the 4800 block of Timber Way, Windermere, was a large black bear on his back porch eating an old container of sauce. He said that the bear was not trying to get into the house and was mostly just walking around. Police told the man to leave the animal alone and in the morning make sure that he does not have any further garbage outside. Conservation was notified of the incident. The bear was not being aggressive in any way and was not trying to get into the building. • On August 22nd, Columbia Valley RCMP received a call from an Albertan man saying his 2006 Dodge Ram had been broken into overnight and money from a wallet was taken. He said that a slim jim lock pick was used and that there was no damage to his vehicle. He told police that $3000 cash was in a wallet and suspects the incident was related to a previous complaint of suspicious men. Anyone with information should contact RCMP or Crimestoppers. • On August 22, at 9:52 p.m. a Windermere man reported a break and enter into his 24 foot utility trailer in the 4800 block of Timber Way. He said that the shed was also broken into but there was no damage. The owner suspects it might be a former employee as he still has the keys. Officers were told that a generator, air tools, tool pouches, and ground roller have been missing since Friday. Police continue to investigate.

Funding remains despite HST By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff

Invermere, Radium, and other designated resort municipalities across British Columbia will continue to receive funding previously generated by the Provincial Hotel Room Tax, even though the tax was eliminated with the introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) this July. Both Invermere and Radium participate in the Resort Municipality Tax Transfer Program, which transfers between one and four percent of the eightpercent Provincial Hotel Room Tax generated within each area for projects that help develop their tourism economy. There are currently 13 communities across the province designated as resort municipalities. Radium has taken part in the Resort Municipality Tax Transfer Program since August 2007, which results in additional revenue of around $140,000 per year. This money goes towards general improvements around town, Radium’s Rotary Park, and Adventure Radium camp for kids. Invermere, which includes Panorama in its designation, began participating in February 2009, and received around $197,000 last year. This is roughly the

equivalent of an 8.5 percent tax increase, said the District of Invermere’s director of finance, Karen Cote. The funds are used for the Mountain-Valley Shuttle Service, Pothole Park, Invermere and Panorama trail systems, the Radium to Invermere Greenway project, and improvements around town and Kinsmen Beach, With the arrival of the HST, the Hotel Room Tax was discontinued and the funding mechanism for the Resort Municipality Tax Transfer Program was eliminated. However, provincial funding for resort municipalities will continue under the Resort Municipality Initiative Program, said Marc Black of the Ministry of Community and Rural Development. “The formula used to calculate the amount the community would receive remains the same,” he said. “This means, for example, that the community will receive in 2011 the equivalent amount it would have earned in 2010 with the Hotel Room Tax still in place. “The previous program was a direct tax transfer. With the introduction of the HST, the community will instead receive a grant which is equivalent to the hotel room tax generated in the community.” For now, Invermere and Radium must submit a list of all programs and projects to be funded in 2010 from the Resort Municipality Initiative Program in order to receive payments for the remainder of the year.

Summer’s end offers bounty

By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor If you are trying to conduct business, August can be a write-off. Business often finds it difficult to compete with the lure of the golf course, cabin or campsite. With so many people out soaking up the last rays of summer, August often seems like the slowest month of the year. In the news business, it is a bit of a breather in which we prepare for the fourth quarter kick-off. However, if you are one of the lucky ones heading out for the last of the long weekends, you are in for a treat because the mosquitos are gone and summer’s end in vacation valley offers a bounty of earthly delights. This Saturday is a perfect example. At the valley’s markets and produce stands, you will have access to some of the best food you will get all year long. Savour it at a backyard barbecue. Look for that elusive whatchamacallit you have been hunting at Christ Church Trinity’s giant garage sale and help raise money for their Guatemala Project. Learn Ikebana, the fine art of Japanese flower arranging at Pynelogs Cultural Centre. Our own Chizuko Purschwitz has a master’s certificate in Ikebana from the Shugetsu Ikebana School in Japan. Catch the finger-pickin’ goodness of John Cronin and friends at Music on Main in Radium Hot Springs this Saturday night. Squeeze off a few rounds or watch some competitive marksmanship at the Bugaboo Blast Sporting Clays Shoot at the Rod and Gun Club’s Rauch Homestead Range. And get ready for the Labour Day long weekend, another blockbuster weekend in the valley which will include everything from hockey to mud wrestling. I’ll see you there.

Harry and Maud Rumsey were excellent hosts Dear Editor: Regarding the Historical Lens photo in the August 20th edition, the Skookum Inn was built in the early 1950’s on property purchased from my father, Walter Stoddart. The Rumseys were coowners with a silent partner, McLaughlin, of Calgary. My husband and I celebrated our marriage in June, 1955, with a luncheon there. The Rum-

seys were excellent hosts (he the bartender, she the chef.) It was considered a lovely location. Later, in the early 1960’s, they sold to the Jiggins family who later moved to Vancouver Island and now own Arrowsmith Golf Course, north of Parksville. The Rumseys retired to Calgary. Remembering Robert Hampton Grey, RCN Dear Editor: With your photo regarding Navy Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray on Page 19 of your August 13th edition, it was sad to note how little was said of Lt. Gray. His distinguished World War II record as a Canadian Naval Officer and pilot in the Fleet Air Arm should be known. The Fleet Air Arm was the aviation part of the British Navy in which Lt. Gray served and was decorated three times as a war hero. In 1940, Robert Hampton Gray fondly known as Hammy was a student at the University of British Columbia. In July of that year he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve as an ordinary seaman. After his basic training, he was posted in Halifax and had an opportunity to join the Royal Navy for officer training. While in Britain, he volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm and was returned to Canada to take his pilot training at the Fleet Air Arm Flying School at Yarmouth Center, near St. Thomas, Ontario. After earning his wings, he was returned to Halifax and, shortly after, returned to Britain, where he became a member of the flying crew of 1841 Squadron aboard the Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Formidable. He became a pilot of the famous Chance-Vought Corsair which was designed for aircraft carrier duty. First, he received the MID (Mentioned in Dispatches) in recognition of his skill and ability to fly with undaunted courage, skill and determination while attacking the German battleship Tirpitz as it was trying to hide in Norway’s Kaafjord on August 24 and 29, 1944. A bomb weighing 720 kilograms hit the Tirpitz forward of the bridge and penetrated eight decks but failed to explode. Hammy’s Corsair was damaged during this operation and he managed to return to the aircraft carrier without losing his fighter. In April, 1945, HMS Formidable was sent to the Pacific war

zone to help fight the Japanese. Lt. Gray led several sorties against Japanese ships and land bases. On July 28th of that year, Lt. Gray was leading a Corsair fighter-bomber flight when he scored a direct hit on a Japanese destroyer and sent it to the bottom. For this he received his second military decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross, for his “determination and address in air attacks in Japan”. The war was nearly over and pilots were instructed not to take unnecessary chances. However, on August 9th, Lt. Gray led an attack by eight Corsairs, each carrying two 225-kilogram bombs. Several Japanese ships were resting at anchor in Onagawa Bay in Northern Honshu. Lt. Gray led the attack. A hail of anti-aircraft fire from the 900-tonne ocean escort Amakusa and the destroyer Omaha knocked one his bombs off, setting his plane on fire. Nevertheless, Lt. Gray kept on his course 15 metres above the water and dropped his remaining bomb 45 metres from Amakusa. His bomb smashed through the hull and into the engine room where it exploded, killing 40 Japanese sailors. The Akamusa listed and began to sink and was finished off by other Corsairs in the flight. Lt. Gray’s plane was in distress when it suddenly rolled over on its back and plowed into the sea. For his heroic action he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the only award that British Officers agreed was suitable for Gray`s gallantry and it was the only Victoria Cross awarded to a member of The Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Today, a simple granite cairn stands in Sakiyama Peace Park overlooking Onagawa Bay opposite the site where Gray’s Corsair crashed. The monument was erected by the Japanese in 1989 and is the only known monument honouring an Allied service man in all of Japan.

New president for Rod and Gun By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A new president will soon take the reins of the Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club. Tex Deagnon, the club’s vice president, will take over from current leader, Norm Hendricks at the organization’s regular Tex Deagnon meeting on September 16th. The club, which celebrated its 91st birthday in March, has been run by Mr. Hendricks for more than six years. “We now have a willing member to be the new president,” Mr. Hendricks said. “I am grateful to be able to step back and hopefully watch the club continue to grow and flourish...while still being active in archery and participating in shoots, but leaving the organizing to others.” Since 2003 membership at the club has more than doubled, according to Mr. Hendricks, and more shoots are taking place for archery, air rifles and shotguns. There have also been improvements to the club’s Rauch Homestead Range, with a recent extension and

the addition of a sporting clays shooting course. Mr. Deagnon said he hopes to build on the work done so far and will try to increase the number of regular participants, hold more fishing events, and expand small arms programs. “I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “My biggest challenge is to get more people involved. We have a large membership, but small numbers turning up to each event.” In an attempt to appeal to younger people, Mr. Deagnon plans to increase the Rod and Gun Club’s web presence by establishing a Facebook group to compliment the club website. He is also keen to build a clubhouse for the organization. Currently, club meetings are held at the Invermere Legion, with equipment storage at the range and members’ houses. “I would love to get us a clubhouse,” Mr. Deagnon said. “I also like the idea of a company picnic, if we want people to come out then we have to make our events more family oriented.” Mr. Deagnon has been the club’s vice president since January and a member of the Rod and Gun club for a total of four years. For more information on the club and upcoming events, visit www.lwdrodgun.org.

in the way they react to and resolve them, that applies to your own family or one close to you. City Island has a great ensemble cast, who all contribute to the enjoyment of this movie. That includes performances by Alan Arkin, as Vince’s acting coach, and Emily Mortimer, as his acting class partner. Mortimer’s role, as Molly, a woman with her own deep secret, is particularly poignant. City Island is wonderfully written and directed by Raymond de Felitta, who also helmed Two Family House, a few years back. Seek it out. It’s good too.

RATING: 8 OUT OF 10 HEADS

3.75 JAGERMEISTER

City Island is a good natured comedy-drama about a family that lives in a seaside village near the Bronx, New York, and keeps secrets from one another. It stars Andy Garcia as Vince Rizzo, a prison guard who has long dreamed of becoming an actor. He’s married to Joyce (Juliana Margulies) and they have two children, Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller), who’s in highschool, and Vivian (Dominick Garcia-Lorido), who they believe attends college. The Rizzos are a regular family; they bicker a little and shout at each other sometimes, but it’s obvious they love each other. But each of them harbours secrets from the rest — a lot like a real family. Vince, who feels vaguely ashamed of his aspira-

tions, tells his wife he’s playing poker when he’s going to acting classes. Joyce smokes cigarettes on the sly and believes that Vince is dissatisfied with their marriage. Vince Jr. has an obsession with a form of on-line porn you may never have seen, or imagined before, and Vivian is really working as a stripper instead of attending classes. And then there’s the matter of Vince’s illegitimate son, Steven (Tony Nardella) who comes to live with the Rizzos after Vince springs him from prison. The screwball situations that arise as the secrets the Rizzos keep from each other are slowly, often hilariously revealed, provide a steady stream of laughs, but also provoke a certain amount of empathy. The Rizzos, after all, are merely human. You may recognize something, not in their exact situations, but

Pynelogs to host last solo art show of the season Submitted by Kate McKenna, Pynelogs Cultural Centre

As the end of the month approaches, Pynelogs Cultural Centre is getting ready for its last solo show of the season. From August 24th to KUDOS TO KATE — September 5th, the show Pynelog’s summer student will feature the works of Kate McKenna bids fareLori Lees Stout, Marilyn well to the valley as she Oliver, Linda Percival, heads back to Ontario to Jon Howlett, and Karen continue her studies. Jorgensen. Lori Lees Stout is a watercolour artist from Surrey, B.C., and explores her love of nature and unique buildings in the Columbia Valley. Her interest in art was first piqued by her godfather, Jack Naismith, and it soon grew as she began taking drawing and painting classes while completing her education degree at the University of Alberta.

She has explored landscapes and still lifes in oils, watercolours, and pen and ink, as well as experimenting with fabric painting in clothing design. Her work, typified by vivid colours, has been sold in various coffee shops, art shows and galleries. Marilyn Oliver hails from Cranbrook, B.C. She has explored many different mediums, including oil, African fabric and acrylics, Asian characters, watercolour collage, encaustics, and art cards. She credits her spontaneous nature with this diversity of expression and the creative process. Her work has been shown in Victoria, Saskatchewan, and the East and West Kootenays, at CDAC, Key Gallery, Pynelogs, and Centre 64. She has been recognized in juried venues and has received a People’s Choice award. Linda Percival creates drawings, paintings, and ceramic pieces. By exploring different mediums she has been able to experiment with different techniques and has been able to transfer them from one medium to another. As a result of this, she often ends up with new discoveries or ‘accidents,’ giving her energy, enthusiasm, and passion. Framing her ceramic pieces and adding her signature calligraphic-like marks “compliments

the sense of playfulness and sensitivity” her work is known for. Jon Howlett grew up in the picturesque Lake District in England and was inspired from an early age to paint, winning his first National Art prize by the time he was eight. He studied Graphic Design at Teesside University, and after teaching skiing and snowboarding in New Zealand he moved to Invermere, immediately falling in love with the mountains and wildlife. His passion for nature, wildlife and scenery is evident in his acrylic paintings and hopes to pass some of the pleasure he derives from nature through to his audience. Karen Jorgensen was born in Penticton, B.C., and established an oil field construction business, which she ran from 1977 to 1983. During this time she studied psychology and art part-time through the University of Athabasca and earned a certificate in Fine Arts. She completed her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary. She has had a life-long love of art and has won many awards, including Grande Prairie Regional College’s Art Acquisition Award in 1982 and the University of Calgary’s Owen Family Award in 2005. Submitted by Columbia Valley Otters Swim Club As the Columbia Valley Otters Swim Club wraps up yet another successful summer swim lesson season at both the Radium Pools and the beach, they are also gearing up for their winter swim club program with the start of Rookie Camp August 30th until September 2nd. Every year the club runs the one week swim program to give kids a chance to try out swim club. “It is a great opportunity for swimmers and parents to see if swim club is a good fit for them,” pro-

gram director Shelly Kochorek said, “But the kids like it so much, many of them come back year after year.” The emphasis of the camp is for swimmers to work on all four swim strokes, refine their technique, as well as work on dive starts and flip turns. “It is a fun team environment,’ coach Karen Fahrni said. Both Sonia Otis and Ms. Fahrni, who will be coaching the club during the year, will run the camp. The regular club season will start September 13th. For adult and children fall programs, contact the club at (250) 347-9562 or cvotters@hotmail.com

After the RRSP: understanding your options Your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) must mature at the end of the year in which you turn 71 and if you roll it into a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) account you must start taking money out in your 72nd year. So what happens next? Canadians generally face three options: cash out the retirement savings plan in its entirety; purchase a term or life annuity; or roll over their savings plan assets into an RRIF (or some combination of the above). There is also a new option that is called a variable annuity. Let’s take a closer look at each of these options, so you can understand what the best choice is for you.

New Kain exhibit By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A new permanent exhibit dedicated to explorer Conrad Kain is opening soon at the Windermere Valley Museum in Invermere. The display gives details on the Austrian’s life, his first ascents and on early mountaineering in the valley. The collection of pictures, letter excerpts and memorabilia has been put together by volunteers at the museum over the last three weeks. “He’s an important part of this area, I’ve always known his name, said Alex Weller, a summer student at the museum, who grew up in the local area. “Climbers all know who Conrad Kain is, plus people are more interested now following his centennial last year. The exhibit is made mostly from pieces gathered last summer for a display for the 100th anniversary of Kain’s arrival in Canada. As more material was found by the

museum than could be shown at the time, the decision was made to dedicate a section of the main building to him. Museum staff say many visitors are keen to learn about his pioneering ascents in the Purcell Mountain range. “Most people had no idea who he was before last year, Ms. Weller said. “Since the centennial that has all changed. Now lots of people come in and ask about him. In addition to pictures and letters the exhibit has a first edition copy of Conrad Kain’s autobiography, Where The Clouds Can Go. First published in 1935, the book has more than 50 archival images, with pictures and descriptions from Kain of life in the valley 100 years ago. The Windermere Valley Museum is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the end of September. Admission is by donation. For more information call, 250-342-9769 or visit, windermerevalleymuseum.ca.

s obituary s Belinda “Honey” D’Angio March 22, 1927 – August 21, 2010 Honey was born and raised in Powell River, B.C. In 1944 she married her best friend, John and together they spent 51 wonderful years on their 2 acre, ocean front property. The couple raised their two daughters, plus an ever-changing assortment of pets and livestock. From her childhood, Honey pursued a passion for gardening and often said, “if my hands are clean, you know I’m sick!” She also was an avid square dancer, whist and bridge player and an active member of her local community club, garden club and hospital foundation. Honey was predeceased by her husband John and her daughter Joan (Sverre) Holgersen. She is survived by daughter Judy (Larry) Painchaud, her grandchildren Jeff, Jason (Barb) and Jody, greatgrandchildren, Afke, Tyler, Sonja, Chelsea, and Veronica. Words cannot express the family’s gratitude to the extraordinary staff at Columbia House for their care and compassion. You people set the standard for excellence! Honey will be going home to rest with her beloved John.

CHEERS & JEERS Jeers to the person who fingered me while at a stop sign at the yield on 10th Ave and 13th Street. Jeers to the woman who sends her kid to do her dirty work! Cheers to all the people who do good in our town, ie. Keeping garbage off our beaches etc. Cheers to Tracy Gadsby from Columbia House. Cheers to the lady in the black car and to Dean for helping us stop vehicles on Highway 93/95 so we could retrieve our horses. Cheers to all the boys who helped clean and landscape up at the Hostel. I am so very very grateful, and very proud of all of you, your mama’s done good. Cheers to Kristy and her staff for running such an amazing sports camp. Double cheers to Kristy who is donating a week of revenue to Nicaragua to help with a sports program over there. What a great gal!

BUG PROTECTION — Screen Solutions, a new company started by Harold Hazelaar (above), offers bug screens for any outdoor space. His enclosed decks (left) and freestanding screened rooms offer protection from the elements and a range of insects.

Screen firm offers bug solutions By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A new company, Screen Solutions, is offering environmentally friendly, custom-built bug screens for patios, decks and a variety of outdoor spaces. The firm, based in Windermere, is a subsidiary of HD Railings Ltd., an exterior railings company started by Harold Hazelaar in 1998. HD Railings has installed over 11 kilometres of aluminium railing on retaining walls, around pools and on decks. Mr. Hazelaar’s newest venture offers a variety of screen options to enhance outdoor spaces across the Columbia Valley. “The screens are for pretty much everybody who wants to enjoy being outdoors without being eaten alive by bugs,” Mr. Hazelaar explained. “They are ideal for someone who has a deck or patio on their home, or a nice yard and would like a freestanding structure they can relax in.” From simple screened walls to freestanding, screened rooms — Screen Solutions will site build screens to fit any space. These come with the option of fixed, permanent walls, or screen curtains, which can be pulled back when not being used. Screen Solutions offer a screened-in, outdoor area that allow for enjoyment of a deck, hot tub or patio without feeling enclosed in an indoor space. As well as giving protection from mosquitoes,

wasps and other insects, the screens also provide shelter against the elements, greatly reducing wind, and making outdoor spaces more usable in a variety of weather conditions. “Not only do screens reduce wind dramatically on windy days,” Mr. Hazelaar said. “They also help to cut up to 80 percent ultraviolet rays from the sun, so deck furniture lasts longer and your skin is exposed less.” In addition the screen rooms retain some heat from outdoor heaters, keeping the screened area warmer on chilly days during the spring and fall, or on cooler summer nights. The process of choosing an ideal screen solution for your space begins with a consultation. As all screens are custom designed and built, any tastes, style and budget can be catered to, with prices varying based on the complexity of the design. Installation can take anything from four or five hours to a few days depending on the project. “I have seen people spend a lot of money on their decks and realize they quite often become an unusable space because of bugs, wind, rain or, even, snow,” Mr. Hazelaar explained. “This maximizes what people can get out of their deck or balcony, making it a pleasant space which can be used at any time of day...we have been installing railings for 12 years, so this seemed to be a natural expansion.” For more information, contact Harold at 250342-7656 or visit www.hdrailings.ca.

Mobile mammogram service to visit By Pioneer Staff A free, no-hassle mammography service will be visiting Invermere from September 2nd to 8th. The province-wide Screening Mammography Program offers free checks to women aged 40 to 79, without the need for a doctor’s referral. The mobile service visits around 100 communities in British Columbia each year, also stopping in Radium Hot Springs, Fernie and 48 other Interior and Kootenay locations. Appointments can be booked by telephone and take about 15 minutes from beginning to end.

The B.C. Cancer Agency, which runs the service, recommends that women over the age of 40 — even those without any breast cancer symptoms — have regular mammograms, at least once every two years. The mobile mammography service, started in 1988, is designed to bring mammograms to areas where they may not be regularly available. While here, the van will be outside Lions Hall, at the back of the Chamber of Commerce building. After leaving Invermere the service will then travel to Kimberley and Golden. To make an appointment call 1-800-663-9203. Visit www.smpbc.ca for more information.

FAITH

Of rocks, islands and branches By Pastor Fraser Coltman East Kootenay Lutheran Parish In the 1960’s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sang a song whose chorus rang, “I am a rock, I am an island.” It was the song of a jilted lover licking his wounds, trying unsuccessfully to convince himself that he was OK. “I am a rock, I am an island.” The chorus of that song also expresses the way we tend to live in relation to God too. Even those of us who trust in God must admit that we tend to fall back on ourselves in life. We assume that our will is God’s will. We expect life to go our way. We depend on our own wisdom and strength to carry us through. “I am a rock, I am an island,” we sing through the days of our lives. But God invites us to live our lives differently. To free us from our dependence on ourselves, He became

one of us. Jesus was very much a man, but He was not just a man. He is the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity, true God who became human in order to give us back the life we were created to live. God did not create us to live as a rock or an island. He made us to be creatures in touch with Him and with each other. He made it possible for us to return to a life in tune with Him and caring for others by giving His life on the cross. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our selfish ways, and He rose from the dead to assure us that He is with us to forgive us and help us to live new lives. One of the pictures Jesus used to describe us in relation to God is this: “I am the vine and you are the branches.” We are not rocks – strong and enduring in ourselves. We are not islands – independent and able to stand alone forever. Jesus calls us branches. We are connected to Him who gives us all that we need to live lives filled with the fruit of faith, hope and love. Jesus invites every person to believe in Him and be a branch drawing life from Him. If you would like to learn more about what that means, visit a church in the area this Sunday.
