Church struck by vandals Pioneer Staff Unknown vandals have targeted Christ Trinity Church on 7th Avenue, Invermere, tossing around and damaging two large flower pots and a concrete pillar on the church’s front yard.

The damage, which also included a downspout being ripped from the building, occurred sometime be-

tween an evening concert the church held on October 6th, and the morning of October 7th, when property manager Dick Moffatt discovered the damage.

Mr. Moffatt said that this isn’t the first time the church has been vandalized.

“Last fall someone removed the planters. I just don’t understand why people would do this to a church,” he said. “It doesn’t make sense.”

Residents raise concerns about Athalmer path

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff A recently constructed pathway connecting the top and bottom of the Athalmer hill has fallen under disrepair, and local residents are frustrated that no one seems to be taking responsibility for the trail’s maintenance.

Don Steedman, who uses the path on a regular basis, said that he feels the gravel and weeds that have overtaken the surface of the trail has become a hazard for cyclists.

Parts of the asphalt surface have also eroded away, leaving dangerous holes as well.

“I ride to work all summer long. It just keeps getting worse and worse,” he lamented. “The fence is coming down and it just isn’t safe anymore.”

Mr. Steedman said he is not the only one who has noticed the path’s declining state, but he has not been able to determine which level of government should be

keeping the trail safe for users.

District of Invermere Mayor, Gerry Taft, said that the capital costs to construct the path were shared by the Ministry of Transportation, the Regional District of East Kootenay, the District of Invermere and the Columbia River Greenways Alliance.

He added that at this time there is no funding or program in place for regular maintenance of the trail, but he indicated that now that some of the issues with path maintenance have been identified, the District of Invermere, and the Regional District of East Kootenay will work together to find solutions.

“The path, when fully constructed to the main highway/crossroads, area will be an important and well-used connection for pedestrians to Invermere, and could potentially link to future paths north to the Old Coach Trail and the Village of Radium Hot Springs,” he said.

Regional District Area F Director, Wendy Booth,

said that she would also like to see the Ministry of Transportation and the Columbia Valley Greenways Alliance involved in a maintenance solution as well.

Scott Maxwell, District Program Manager for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, said that the main reason for the delay in setting up a maintenance agreement is due to the delay in completing the trail, which is supposed to extend to the crossroads and beyond to the Tim Horton’s.

“Right now there is no maintenance agreement.

Once the trail is complete the goal was to permit the Regional District to maintain it but we have seen some delays with the Canadian Tire construction. We didn’t want to draw people into that while it was going on,” Mr. Maxwell said.

In a late development, on Tuesday, October 11th, Invermere Council carried a resolution to have staff cut down the weeds along the pathway immediately, with gravel sweeping to occur in the spring.

More illegal hunting spotted in Windermere

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff With a headless deer carcass found in Windermere and a sighting of a man wandering through the area with a shotgun, the Conservation Officer Service is urging residents to remain vigilant as they attempt to tighten the net on illicit hunters using the village to stalk their prey.

“At 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 30th, a member of the public observed a man walking with a shotgun near Winderberry Nursery, just off The Bench Road,” said Lawrence Umsonst, Invermere

Conservation Officer.

“He was wearing a khaki cap, plus khaki pants and jacket and is described as being around five foot eight inches tall, medium build and in his 50s.”

The resident who reported the incident spotted a pair of bucks running across the road, closely followed by the man, with shotgun in hand.

“I asked if the resident could see the weapon and they said they could clearly see the gun barrel, so there’s no question that it was a rifle,” Mr. Umsonst added.

dent, who has asked to remain anonymous, discovered a recently-deceased deer.

“The deer had strings tied around it and was missing its head,” she said. “I’ve also seen two other skeletal remains of deer in the same area.”

Windermere is covered by no hunting and no shooting restrictions under the Wildlife Act in most areas of the village. The act also forbids the discharge of firearms within 100 metres of a residence and 500 metres of a school.

Another Scam: A local citizen advised the Columbia Valley RCMP that while using the Internet to purchase a particular dog, she received a response that originally sounded legit but as time went by was quickly discovered to be a scam.

The dog was advertised as free but the transport costs were in the area of $400.

The messages back to the citizen appeared to originate from Africa as well as from connections in Canada.

The correspondence back used poor grammar, spelling errors and the constant use of the small case ‘i’. The agency handling the transportation changed a couple of times from “Pets and Travel Agency,” to “Pets and Travel Transport Agency.” The instructions as to where and how to pay the money at times changed. The local person involved found a website that would be able to help people identify possible frauds, “Fun with Cameron Pet Scams.”

Be careful and take your time researching before handing out any money or using your credit card.

• On October 7th at 3:10 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment members responded to a passed-out male on Highway 93/95, near Windermere. The male had called the police making threats to harm himself. The man was known to the police due to a similar incident recently.

The 30-year-old male from Cranbrook was taken to the hospital and admitted under the Mental Health Act. • In the past two weeks, two Yamaha snowmobiles were stolen from the area of Industrial Rd # 2. The first one is a white-and-red Yamaha Nitro, the second a blue Yamaha.

• On October 7th at 2:15 a.m., as a result of attending a domestic dispute in the 7000 block of Columbia Ave in Radium, a 39-year-old female was charged with assault. She will be appearing in Invermere Provincial court on December 5th.

• On October 8th at 8 p.m., police received a report from a driver that a bag of clothing and some DVDs fell out of his truck while he was passing through Invermere en route to Golden. The caller wished it reported in case the bag was eventually located.

• On October 8th at 9 p.m., detachment members attended to a disturbance in the 700 block of 13th Avenue, Invermere. A 24-year old female from Salmon Arm was arrested for being drunk in a public place. She was lodged in cells until sober and received a violation ticket for being drunk in public.

• On October 9th at 4:56 a.m.. the Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of two males in the

area of the Canfor Mill checking out sheds. When challenged by a male watching the area, the males departed in a blue Cavalier. It is believed the men were looking for fuel.

• While on routine patrol on October 9th, Columbia Valley RCMP members observed a GMC truck with two animals in the back. A local Conservation officer was contacted. Attempts to locate the vehicle at that time failed. The vehicle was later located near Canal Flats. Police attended and seized a small amount of marijuana. A 31-year-old male driver had his licence suspended for 24 hours and his vehicle was towed. The conservation officer seized the two animals.

• On October 9th at 6:20 p.m., Columbia Valley Detachment members, along with East Kootenay Traffic Section, responded to a single-vehicle rollover in Kootenay National Park, 36 kilometres from Radium.

The 24-year-old driver from Calgary advised that he fell asleep at the wheel and ended up in the shoulder losing control of his vehicle. No injuries to the driver or the passenger. The driver was charged with driving without due care and attention.

Distractive Driver I’m a proud police officer who can inform the public that before legislators came out with “distracted drivers,” I invented it by first defining what can distract a driver.

Two separate incidents both happened in a police vehicle while I was a passenger. The first victim was my friend John. We were driving back from a seminar in Cranbrook. We came to a piece of highway that had a reputation as a hangout for elk.

We came up upon probably the largest group of elk that I have ever seen and I noticed John concentrating on looking to the left in amazement of all the elk. He was not looking ahead on the road and he commented there must be 200 elk in that field. Given the amount of time he had his eyes off the road trying to count them, I yelled at the top of my lungs in utmost fear and used the F-bomb to emphasize my fear: “201 counting the freaking one in the middle of the road!!!”

Panic flashed across his face, as he slammed on the brakes in a four-wheel skid, face to the window. As he looked over to me I responded, “Just kidding.” Distractive driver? You bet.

The second incident involved Larry driving this time. Coming back again from a seminar in Cranbrook.

Hot Tim Horton’s coffee in my hand, I nodded off. My hand relaxed obviously, and all of a sudden I scream out very loud realizing my crotch is burning and on fire.

Now, when you nod off and go into a deep sleep and you wake up like that, there is absolutely no recollection you were holding a hot cup of coffee. All you know is your crotch is burning in pain and you don’t know why.

Guys don’t like that kind of unknown. It was a scary two seconds before I realized what happened and then I was relieved because I had knowledge. Larry screams out, “What!?” and almost hits the ditch. Then he’s all laughter and can’t control himself. Distracted driver? You bet.

District extends Lot 48 deadline

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The province has officially announced it has no money to help the Nature Conservancy of Canada purchase the much-debated Lot 48, a 315-acre property located on the eastern shores of Columbia Lake.

In a letter sent to Area Area F Director F Director Wendy Booth, Wendy Booth B.C. Minister of Environment Terry Lake explained that while the purchase of the lot remains high on their list of priorities, they simply don’t have the required cash at the moment.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is currently in negotiations to purchase the lot from its owner, the Wilder family of Fairmont.

The purchase carries with it an all-inclusive $7.2 million price tag, and the conservancy has been trying to raise the funds to secure the property, which has been identified as having high ecological values, and both historical and

speaking with the ministers, Director Booth said they indicated they would be willing to “de-link” the two properties, allowing discussions about the provincial parkland to move forward without Lot 48.

“I think it’s really positive that they’re willing to delink the two,” she said. “Now we can have discussions about things like lake access in the park.”

Following her meeting with the ministers, Director Booth proposed a motion to the Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors on October 7th that they extend their current deadline of November 1st to reconsider the zoning of Lot 48 to May, 2012, which would allow all parties involved more time to explore funding for the lot, she said. The board agreed unanimously, and the deadline was extended.

In 2006, the board gave first and second reading to a bylaw that would downzone the residential and commercially-zoned property to its original agriculturalzone status. Since then, the regional district, the land owner and other groups have worked on a number of different proposals to find an alternate solution for the property but the proposed downzoning bylaw remains on the table.

The Wilder family could not be reached for comment as of press time.

The Regional District of East Kootenay has already committed $900,000 towards the purchase (most of which is from the Local Conservation Fund), and hoped, along with the conservancy, to see the amount boosted by a financial contribution from the provincial government.

Despite the setback, the Nature Conservancy of Canada is still working hard to secure funding, said Nancy Newhouse, program manager of the Nature Conservancy’s Canadian Rocky Mountains Program.

“We will be working with the Wilder family and our funders to come up with a solution,” she said, adding the details of the potential deal, including deadlines, are confidential.

At the recent Union of British Columbia Municipalities Conference, Director Booth spoke with the Minister of Environment, Terry Lake, and the Minister of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resources, Steve Thomson, about the future of Lot 48. Director Booth brought to their attention the public’s desire to have access to the north end of the lake, which could include access through provincial parkland adjacent to Lot 48.

In the past, Director Booth said, the province would not entertain talks about things like proposed upgrades to lake access roads on the provincial parkland until an agreement was reached regarding Lot 48. However, after

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The final nomination papers for the municipal, school board, and regional elections of the Columbia Valley have been handed in.

By the end of the day this Friday, October 14th, the top political prospects of our local area will have been announced, and constituents will be licking their voting chops in anticipation of the November 19th election voting day — hopefully.

I say hopefully because I’m optimistic that voters will start paying attention to candidates’ opinions and ideas about local issues now rather than making a quick decision while standing at the polling station in November.

Now is the time to start listening to what candidates think, and more importantly, asking them your burning questions to hear how they respond.

Compared to larger city centres, the voting areas in the Columbia Valley enjoy a unique closeness that allows residents access to speak to candidates one-on-one; something citizens in big British Columbian cities could never have. Take advantage of this opportunity and ask questions of your candidates, as most are willing and eager to speak with constituents and earn their votes.

So many people in the Columbia Valley have wonderful opinions and politically-inclined minds, but only a handful step forward to accept the major commitments that come with being a local leader. So thank you to everyone with the time and courage to run for a seat in the upcoming election.

Regional district slams Calgary open house idea

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors has put an abrupt halt to a proposal to hold an open house in Calgary for area second homeowners to discuss how the Lake Windermere Management Plan will be implemented.

The plan, which has been a hot topic in recent months among local and second homeowners and municipal and regional governments, was discussed at an Invermere open house in September to address residents’ questions and concerns. One of the concerns raised was that open houses and information meetings were most often held on days when it is less likely second homeowners are able to attend, and that moving forward without their input would be unfair.

In response to this issue, Area F Director Wendy Booth proposed to the Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors that they consider voting to allow Director Booth and a planner from the regional district to travel to Calgary to host an open house for second homeowners who live there full time.

The proposed costs, which would have been paid from the regional district’s planning budget, would have included staff wages and overtime, travel, accommodation, and facility rental costs.

The regional district has never before held an informational session outside the region.

At a regular regional district meeting on Friday, October 7th, the three directors in favour of an out-of-town open house — District of Invermere Director Gerry Taft, Village of Radium Hot Springs Director Dee Conklin, and Director Booth — tried to convince their fellow directors that the endeavor was a worthwhile one.

Director Booth argued that due to confusion and possible misinformation regarding the complex Lake Windermere Management Plan, the trip to Calgary would be a valuable step to help bridge the information gap between the district and second homeowners.

“We need to consider that when they

[second homeowners] do retire, they will become our long-term residents,” Director Booth said.

Directors Dean McKerracher (District of Elkford), and Jim Ogilvie (City of Kimberley) voiced the objections, arguing that it would set an unhealthy precedent, and that other forms of technology, such as hosting an online webinar, should be explored instead.

Director Taft replied that a face-toface meeting has values that a computer meeting doesn’t, like the ability to collect people’s contact details for future information distribution.

Village of Canal Flats Director Ute Juras objected to the proposal of a traveling open house, saying that while she understood the intent, she was unable to justify the amount of money that it would cost.

“These people bought land within our area. I would much rather see us working toward a meeting time that would work for everyone,” she said.

Area G Director Wilkie also opposed the idea. “The money is so minor,” he said. “The important thing is, where is local government? They [second homeowners] have to understand their local government is in B.C.” “This is more about the philosophy than the money,” agreed Director Taft.

“But for the value this could provide to build a goodwill and avoid conflict is well worth the one-off.”

Despite the statements of Directors Taft, Booth, and Conklin — the only three directors to vote ‘yes’ to the idea — the board voted down the motion, and no open house will be held.

The Lake Windermere Watersports Association, which pushed heavily for the Calgary meeting, said they were disappointed in the decision, but thanked Directors Taft, Booth, and Conklin for their support. In a statement, the group’s spokespeople, Dave McGrath and Cheryl Willard, said they maintain that Calgary property owners are not fully engaged, and suggested the Lake Windermere Management Committee consider funding the cost of the meeting as a possible solution.

...continued from Page 8 core of developing a future for young people in the valley, Mr. Wilson said. He added that he strongly believes that these three subjects should be worked into the education system at various grade levels in appropriate ways.

When asked what three things he would do if he were in charge of economic development for the area, Mr. Wilson said he would first begin to educate the youth; second, develop and encourage a sense of pride and celebration in what the valley already has, for use in marketing; and third, to work hard on developing the infrastructure needed to support further growth.

“If you can attract light industry, I would encourage the local area to do it. It’s okay for a local government to offer incentives in terms of limited business or property taxes for a period of time,” he said. “That would give people the incentive to take the risk to come to you.”

Some other suggestions Mr. Wilson has for the area is to encourage responsible mining operations to start up, expand the Invermere airstrip, and for the local governments to respect the visiting tax base a little more in terms of communicating plans and requests for input on issues, even if the homeowners aren’t living in the area full time.

“I don’t think I have ever seen a mail out ever. I haven’t seen anything from the local government in the years I have been here, except for bills, so if they think our relationship is warm and endearing they’re wrong,” Mr. Wilson said. “Having said that, there’s no animosity, but they have done nothing to engage me.

If they want me to bring business and do stuff here, it is in their camp to show me how great it is. I’m not offended, but it is a lost opportunity for them.”

If he had to choose only one piece of advice, however, it would be to support and engage the youth, which fits with the three charitable organizations next year’s fundraising golf tournament at Copper Point will be supporting. Locally, the Summit Youth Centre, the Elementary and High School Hockey Academy; and regionally, the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre, will all be recipients of dollars as a result of the charity classic.

Vote result is a letdown Dear Editor: The October 7th decision of the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) against supporting a Lake Windermere Management Plan open house in Calgary was disappointing to the Lake Windermere Watersports Association. Although the information from the open houses is now more complete and up-to-date online, the lack of engagement with lakefront property owners and avid boaters from Calgary has been identified as a problem since the original workshops in 2009.

Representatives from the RDEK, working in conjunction with the Lake Windermere Management Plan, have always maintained that the notice given and the meeting schedules were “adequate” and “satisfactory” and that seasonal homeowners could send in comments by e-mail. However, all the information presented at the open houses hasn’t always been available online.

We see a huge value in actual attendance at these meetings both by way of information and to add clarity to issues that may be misunderstood. There simply is no substitute for an open two-way dialogue.

It is very difficult to engage this group as there really is not a “perfect” time to hold the meetings, and even if there were an ideal time, it is simply human nature to not spend valuable family/vacation time attending meetings regardless of

their importance. Many communities on the east side of the lake hold their annual general meetings in Calgary and they are very well attended.

We are not really surprised at the outcome of the RDEK vote against supporting the open house and thank Gerry, Dee and Wendy for their support. It is great to see that at least our local representatives understand the importance of including the Calgary property owners. We would have liked to have seen support from Gerry Wilkie, the Area G director who also sits on the Lake Windermere Management Plan board.

It should be noted that the Windermere Fire District, which includes the East side communities, is relatively tiny geographically in comparison to the entire RDEK, yet it contributes approximately 12 per cent of the total RDEK planning budget. As there is a lot of money in the Lake Windermere Management Committee budget at this time, the Watersports Association will be encouraging the committee to consider bearing the cost of a Calgary meeting.

Calgarian property owners are not fully engaged and a meeting in Calgary is the very best way to remedy this problem.

It is our hope that this can happen in the very near future.

Movie Review: Horrible Bosses Reviewed by Kate Irwin Bosses, eh? Can’t live with them, can’t hit them over the head with a shovel, drag them out to your car and bury them in the middle of nowhere. Well in this new black comedy directed by Seth Gordon, that’s exactly what a hapless trio of protagonists set out to do.

Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman), Dale Arbus (Charlie Day) and Kurt Buckman (Jason Sudeikis) are high school buddies who work for insufferable bosses. Nick holds down a decent job in the financial sector, but is tortured by the company president, the masochistic Dave Harken (played with aplomb by Kevin Spacey). Dale is an engaged dental assistant who is persistently sexually harassed by nymphomaniacal dentist Julia Harris (Jennifer Aniston).

Then there’s Kurt, whose beloved employer at the chemical company he works for dies and is replaced by

his moronic, cokehead son (an almost-unrecognizable Colin Farrell). Over late night drinks the trio plan their bosses’ demise, a hamfisted ploy which quickly unravels, throwing them into a series of sticky situations.

But as silly and unbelievable as this premise sometimes is, it does its job: putting three talented comic actors in uncomfortable situations so they can make us laugh.

Horrible Bosses works for the most part due to the lively chemistry between Nick, Kurt and Dale, whose wisecracking shtick helps keep the laughs coming.

But they aren’t the only cast members who have a chance to shine. Comedic competition comes from the scene-stealing bosses — who sink their teeth into their larger-than-life characters with glee.

Horrible Bosses is one of those movies where you sense that the people making it had a lot of fun — fortunately they also remembered to allow the audience along for

the ride. It’s adult without being too crass, goofy without being utterly moronic and shocking without relying on gross-out humour.

My only complaint: when something is billed as a black comedy, it should be a bit darker. Although the swearing alone definitely earns the film its R-rating, there’s never much sense that these nice guys are verging on the edge of murder — and their leap to get there feels forced.

With a bit of a darker twist, the film could have been more than a funny, yet throwaway comedy. As it stands, it’ll make you laugh, but try not to trip and fall into any of the plot holes along the way.

Get inspired at the Artym Submitted by Deanna Berrington Artym Gallery The Artym Gallery is pleased to present West Coast Inspiration, an exhibition featuring the work of Jonn Einerssen and Brent Heighton.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, October 22nd at 10 a.m. Both artists will be on hand on opening day from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. for a talk and demonstration, and will attend the evening reception from 6-9 p.m.

This Artym Gallery show will focus on a trip that the duo recently made to Vancouver Island together, where they painted en plein air, meaning ‘in open air’.

This style of painting is done outdoors, on location, of an immediate subject. It is a style that takes a great deal of confidence and surety; a technique of seeing and capturing a scene almost simultaneously.

“I have always found painting outdoors to be the most difficult, but rewarding way to paint” said Brent.

“It requires a much more immediate and fresh approach to the subject … [it is] the opportunity, the opportunity to put down on canvas — or attempt to — the great and ever changing beauty of nature,” Jonn added.

Brent Heighton is a Western Canadian artist who has been painting professionally for close to 30 years. His well known watercolour series include fly-fishermen, koi carp and waterlilies, florals and Western works.

Brent has been painting exclusively in acrylics for the last few years, and his recent body of works include European street scenes and pieces from his many trips south, especially to Mexico. This trip to the coast was refreshing for Brent, he said, and rekindled his interest

His nostalgic prairie pieces and emotionally stirring ocean-scapes are always crowd favourites, and his new stylistic approach to painting is piquing the interest of a younger generation of art lover.

“The act of painting is to communicate what you feel and want to say,” Jonn added. “I look at my paintings not as decoration, but as windows to places people would like to escape to, if only for a few moments, in our hectic lives.”

Murder mystery night returns to Radium

By Pioneer Staff A murder most foul has take place in Radium Hot Springs and the Public Library needs your help to unravel the clues.

Come along to the murder mystery night and estate sale on October 21st or 22nd and claim your stake in the will of Jake Slanders, the multimillionaire founder of The Rumour Mill chain, and help discover how he met his untimely demise.

This is the second murder mystery event being held by the Radium Public Library, which is back by popular demand after a sold out night held in April.

“It was so popular last time that we ended up turning people away, so we decided to hold two nights this time around,” explained Jane Jones, of the Radium Public Library. “There are five local actors and during the reading of the will the audience will be given clues as to who the murderer might be and they must discover who

it is by the end of the evening.”

The back-to-back murder mystery nights will be held at Meet on Higher Ground Coffee Shop in downtown Radium, an intimate setting which allows the audience to get immersed in the action. As well as some sleuthing, attendees can enjoy a meal of tapas from the Higher Ground menu, with wine available for purchase.

As well as the murder mystery action, the evening also includes an estate sale and silent auction. Alongside the $20 entry fee, attendees are asked to bring a small garage sale item for the silent auction at the time they purchase their tickets.

The murder mystery nights will be held on October 21st and 22nd at Meet on Higher Ground Coffee Shop, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are on sale at the venue and the Radium Public Library for $20, plus a small garage sale item, with proceeds going towards the purchase of new books for the library.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL BROADBAND TRANSMITTER INFRASTRUCTURE INSTALLATION CHIS (Castledale-Harrogate Improvement Society) is seeking proposals for the installation of a remote transmitter station on Jubilee Mountain enabling line-of-sight connection to bring Broadband Internet Service (BBIS) to the residents of our two communities. The proposed tower site can be accessed on existing logging roads to about 800 meters from site.

Project Objectives: • Clearing of site 100’ x 100’ (Burn site 2010 forest fire, stand 6” or smaller) • Provide and install (7) surface lockblock foundation (no frost footings) • Provide, fly in and install 6’ x 6’ x 8’ sea freight can with entry roof • Provide and install 50’ extension tower with guy wires and attachments • Provide and install (8) solar panels • Provide and install (20) batteries 6V 350AH with all necessary cables • Provide and install TEG propane backup 60 W with tank and initial propane fill • Provide and install all necessary lumber, cribbing and other materials and labour to complete above tasks.

Swansea Scramble to raise cash for high school uniforms

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The Swansea Scramble, a new, free event for bikers, hikers and runners, is happening this Sunday, October 16th. Put on by Crazy Soles Running and Yoga Store, the Scramble will be an unofficial event, offering local athletes the chance to enjoy a group run, hike or bike and to be timed as they make their way up the fourkilometre course.

“Really it came about because it’s difficult for a runner to get an official time up Mount Swansea and have anyone to compare themselves to,” explained Beva Kirk, of Crazy Soles. “We were inspired by the very popular Grouse Grind race held in Vancouver, which gets so many people and is very similar to Swansea Trail.”

The course, which includes almost 800 metres of elevation gain, will follow the Swansea hiking trail for runners and walkers, with bikers taking the road up to the peak. Open to adults and children, there will also be the option for younger participants to start halfway up.

Along the way will be a drink and snack station for those taking part, with more food and drink at the top of the mountain once participants have completed the race.

“It’s a consistent uphill grade without many flat areas, so it’s a good, tough mountain,” Beva added. “It’s great because you can take it at your own pace. The hikers might challenge themselves just to make it to the top and runners can try to see how quickly they make it up.”

The event is being held as a fundraiser for the David Thompson Secondary School Cross Country Running Team. Entry is by donation — although a donation is not mandatory — with 100 per cent of the proceeds going towards purchasing new uniforms for the high school team.

“This is going to be the first of a few events that we’re planning,” she added. “Also coming up at the end of October is another free event, Enid Was a Cycle Crosser, which is going to be a cycle-cross event where participants ride a road bike on a mountain bike course.”

The cycle cross race will take place at the trails on the north side of Lake Enid on Sunday, October 30th. Racers will do laps around a loop, getting messy and muddy along the way as they tackle hills, jumps and obstacles.

This event, which starts at 10:30 a.m. will be free to enter.

Also upcoming this winter, the Crazy Soles team are planning a run, ski and skate event on Lake Windermere, possibly over the Christmas break.

“We like to get people out together enjoying the area,” Beva explained. “Our eventual hope would be to have free events like this happening once a month, for now we’re hoping to put them on sporadically.”

The Swansea Scramble begins at 10 a.m. for hikers and 11 a.m. for bikers and runners at the parking lot at the base of Mount Swansea. Athletes will meet half an hour before their event begins. For more information, contact Crazy Soles: 250-342-2074.

s obituary s Allan “Al” Kiely 1928 - 2011 Mr. Allan “Al” Kiely, beloved husband of Anne Kiely, passed away at the Invermere and District Hospital in Invermere on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the age of 82.

Besides his loving wife, Al is survived by his children Bruce (Kathleen), Pat, Sandy and Daryn (Leona); his grandchildren Daniel Kiely, Fraser and Tara Coote and Kendra Kiely, and his great granddaughter McKenna Kiely. Al is also survived by his brothers, Ross and Les Kiely.

The Kiely family would like to express appreciation to the Oncology Department at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Al’s homecare nurses, Renata and Jessie, and the palliative care unit staff at the Invermere and District Hospital for their kindness and support. They would also like to extend special thanks to Dr. Christopher Gooch, who stood by Al until the end.

As well as responding to calls, every Tuesday night between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. these volunteers train at the Invermere Fire Hall and the Invermere Fire Training Facility.

Training is set to industry standards and is an on-going, continuing process. Every fifth Sunday, volunteers have call-out duty at the fire hall and inspect equipment to ensure it is ready to go. Volunteers also have opportunities to gain further education in the field of fire fighting, urban fire suppression and rescue techniques by attending outside courses. Several of our volunteers have moved on to careers in full-time departments.

Invermere council • Council carried a motion to support an application for a Nominal rent Tenure for park purposes for the remainder of District Lot 4616.

The crown land in question is located on Westside Road adjacent to the Castle Rock development and has been a topic of discussion for over 14 years by a joint committee that includes the Integrated Land Management Branch (ILMB), the District of Invermere and both the Akisqnuk and Shuswap First Nation. In 2010, the Province applied to have the land removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve, which was rejected.

Based upon the discussions by the joint committee and advice from the ILMB, it was indicated that an application for nominal rent tenure for park purposes could be supported if there are minimal improvements made to the property.

The district’s plan is to leave the land as it sits and over time improve the trails already in existence for safety purposes.

The property contains archaeological sites that could be impacted by human activity, so prior to any improvements, work would have to be done to protect these sites from further disturbance.

The tenure process will require consultation with the First Nations, which the province will facilitate.

Regional district news in brief • Columbia Valley directors have been meeting to discuss a service review of recreational facilities in the Columbia Valley, with the long-term goal of creating a sub-regional approach to governing recreation facilities.

Currently, the facilities are taxed per area and municipality, which some have argued is done disproportionately.

The directors gave an update of their discussions, which included the possibility of amalgamating the Columbia Valley and Area F Recreation Service Areas and extending the service boundaries to include Canal Flats and the rest of Area F. Before anything further moves ahead, presentations will be made to Columbia Valley municipal councils, recreation groups and other invited parties regarding recreation services in the Columbia Valley and the proposed amalgamation of services. Though no dates have been set, the presentations are expected to be scheduled in December or January.

“This is a possible solution,” said Invermere Director Gerry Taft. “It’s not a done deal...We need the input, and eventual buy-in from recreational users and other concerned parties about the changes and new ideas.”

• Rod Turnbull has been appointed to the Windermere Utility Advisory Commission for a two-year term.

The commission provides recommendations to the area director and board on matters related to the operation and maintenance of the Windermere Water System.

• The Columbia Valley Nordic Club will receive $1,705 from the Electoral Area F Discretionary Grants in Aid account and $3,454 from the Electoral Area G account for the purchase of a tracksetter and groomer to maintain cross-country ski trails in the Edgwater, Hewitt Road, and Baptiste Lake areas.

On October 21st, Invermere Home Hardware will celebrate National Tree Day in partnership with Tree Canada by planting 10 trees near Kinsmen Beach.

Invermere Home Hardware is one of 22 Home Hardware locations across Canada chosen to take part in this year’s tree planting.

“We are very excited to help beautify our community in a way that will also enhance the environment and health of our neighbours,” said Al Miller, dealer/owner, of Invermere Home Hardware.

“The people of Invermere have been great supporters of Invermere Home Hardware, and this is one way we can show our appreciation to the community.”

The site near Kinsmen Beach was chosen for this project because the area was in need of some beautification and landscaping, making it a perfect fit.

Clarification In the October 7th edition it was stated that the Columbia Salmon Festival raised $40,000 for local ecological projects. $40,000 was the total raised through sponsorship. The money was used to stage the festival and local education programs, with the remainder going to eco projects.

Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church The Christian faith has been likened to a journey.

In Luke 24, verses 13-35 we can read about two of Jesus’ disciples walking on the road to Emmaus, as they discussed the death of Jesus — then suddenly Jesus Himself began walking and talking with them.

At first they didn’t recognize Him, and they discussed all the goings on over the past few days. Suddenly, (in verse 31) their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us and explained the scriptures to us?” they asked in verse 32 from the New Living Translation of the Bible.

The two disciples were on a journey. They were confused and didn’t know what was going on. They were looking for reason and trying to make sense out of what had happened in their lives. They found it when the Risen Christ was revealed to them.

Life is a journey; a lot of that journey is confusing and we aren’t sure why this or that is happening to us.

Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense, but like the chorus from the old pop song says: “Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water. Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea. Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently, by putting your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee.”

As we put our trust in the Lord, as we seek Him and as we study His word, as we put our hand in His, He will calm the troubles in our lives. He will be there to take us through.

So today if you have something on your mind, if you are confused about what is happening in your life, if you don’t feel quite as close to the Lord as you once were, if the fire seems to be going out, then take the time, to reach out to Jesus. He promises us in Hebrews verse 13:5 (New Living Translation) “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”

One more point on this: it is we who reach out to the Lord, we put our hand in His. Instead of finding a light to guide them, the disciples were able to put their hand into the hand of God himself, the hand of Jesus, the Risen Christ. You may recall that in probably the most famous post-resurrection experience, Jesus asked Thomas quite literally to put his hand into Jesus’ hands.

Let it be our prayer this morning that God our heavenly Father will reveal Jesus to us, so we can put our hands into the hand of God.

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff With the building on Athalmer Road taking shape, and less than six months until opening day, Craig Knapp, the owner of the upcoming Invermere Canadian Tire branch, is getting excited about the Craig Knapp prospects for his new store.

With a background of more than 13 years with the Canadian Tire Corporation and one successful store ownership already under his belt, Mr. Knapp said he’ll be able to offer the valley a wide range of products, competitive pricing and job prospects for about 35 employees.

“I think this is a really good chance to open a great store for the area,” said Mr. Knapp via telephone from the Wallaceburg branch in Ontario that he owns and operates. “It’s super exciting seeing it all coming together.

they hadn’t even started the foundations, now the walls are going up.”

One of the main opportunities for Invermere is to broaden the choice of products available locally, Mr. Knapp explained. Not only will the store stock a selection of the items carried by any Canadian Tire, they will also be able to order in each of the 70,000 products that the organization stocks across the country.

Pricing, which include shipping to Invermere, will be the same as at any other location, with a home delivery service for larger items also offered.

Some of the main product focuses for Invermere will be sporting equipment, including golf and hockey gear, fishing and hunting supplies; a range of automotive and boating products; home and garden items; and tools.

“This will prevent the need to travel to Cranbrook to buy items,” Mr. Knapp said. “We are extremely competitively priced and bring really good value to our customers. I also personally like to get very involved in the community and supporting community needs and causes.”

Having a new 20,000 square foot retailer in town will also provide employment opportunities for about 35 people, he added. Canadian Tire plans to start re-

cruitment efforts in December by holding a local job fair, with the projected opening date for the store sometime during March 2012.

The grand opening will include some special offers for shoppers and the chance to browse through the new store and the accompanying Mark’s Work Wearhouse, also currently under construction.

“I’ve travelled around the country and I’m really excited to move to Invermere,” Mr. Knapp added. “To some Invermere might be considered a smaller store in a smaller area, but what makes it for me is the location.

“You take this beautiful drive down from Calgary and then go through the canyon near Radium into this Garden of Eden on the other side. The sun seems to always shine and the temperature feels a few degrees warmer... It just instantly felt like home.”

Mr. Knapp will move to the Columbia Valley from Ontario with his partner Diane Ewing and their children, Taylor, 18, Allie, 16, and Caroline, 12, who are already excited about the prospect of spending time in the local area.
