Things heated up for Invermere Fire Rescue on Sunday, April 29th, as the department conducted a live burn training exercise in the town’s Industrial Park.

The fire department’s 20 members practised multiple scenarios inside an abandoned property to prepare for real-life fire rescues before setting the building fully ablaze.

Radium sawmill to reopen this fall

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The Radium sawmill will reopen before the year is out, Canfor confirmed this week, announcing a near$40 million investment into the facility.

After a three-year shutdown, the wood products company reported on Thursday, April 26th, that they will pour $40 million into the two local sawmills in Canal Flats and Radium, allowing the latter to reopen sometime this fall.

With 170 people employed directly by the mill and a further 170 employed cutting lumber, the announcement represents a significant boost to the job market for the village of Radium.

“It’s exciting, and not just for Radium,” said Dee Conklin, Radium’s mayor. “This is truly good for the whole valley ... It’s a huge investment that secures the future of the mill.”

The turnout for Radium was a success and their program will get started in the near future. Invermere is looking for more volunteers for this valuable program.

Think about volunteering. An information session will be organized in the near future. Just planting the bug in your ear to think about it.

• On April 27th at 1:20 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment responded to a complaint of a disturbance in the parking lot of Tim Hortons. Police learned that a group of people had organized a get-together over Facebook. They were cooperative and moved once they were told that the noise was disturbing residents in the area.

• On April 28th at 1 p.m., Constable Chris Ralph risked life and limb to ensure the well-being of a Husky dog that was left in a vehicle at the pools in Radium.

The rear windows were halfway down and although the inside of the vehicle was hot, Cst. Ralph’s evaluation was that the dog was not in immediate distress. He noticed that there was a bowl in the car, so he reached in to unlock the car to retrieve the bowl and supply water for the dog. His hand would either be ripped up or the dog would cooperate. Although the dog appreciated the assistance, Cst. Ralph advised that the dog refused to identify himself when asked. Beyond the call of duty.

• On April 28th at 8 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of an unsecured residence in the 5000 block of Raven Rd. in Fairmont Hot Springs. A window was found broken and entry appeared to have been gained. The owner of the residence was not located at the time. It is believed that a TV may have been stolen from the residence. The investigation is continuing.

• On April 29th at 2:50 a.m., a 59-year-old man from Invermere was found intoxicated and lying down on the sidewalk in front of the local bars in town. The man was arrested for being drunk in public and released in the morning with a ticket.

• On April 29th at 7 p.m., police were advised of a single-vehicle accident with a deer on Highway 93/95 near Dry Gulch. The deer was killed as a result of the impact. The driver was not injured and the vehicle was able to be driven away.

• On April 29th at 7 p.m., the Columbia Valley

RCMP detachment was advised of two stranded skiers in the area of Mount McQuade/Elk Lakes. The duo got stuck while on a five-day trek from Alberta to B.C., through Kootenay National Park. The skiers were able to communicate their problem via a satellite phone.

One of the skiers lost his skis when it fell over a cliff.

Search and Rescue were contacted and it was decided that since the two were not lost or in any emergency, there was no need for immediate attendance. The experienced hikers remained at their location and Parks were able to fly in and drop off another pair of skis.

Our thanks to the park wardens for looking after this problem.

Bike rodeo This week I had the pleasure of doing a bike rodeo for the kids at Eileen Madson Primary School.

I laid out the bike course to make it as challenging as possible, to have a good look at the kids’ abilities to control their bikes. We also practised our hand signals.

However, I also had to play with their minds.

Nearing the last class before the kids started the obstacle course, I mentioned to the children that the course was challenging, and so far only three kids had to be taken to the hospital. I could see the reaction of one girl go from all smiles to all gloom.

After my talk, I took questions. The girl who went gloom on me raised her hand. She asked if I was serious that three kids went to the hospital. You would think that my parental, loving, and kind instincts would kick in, but I guess now that my son is all grown up and no longer home, these instincts seem to be lacking. I informed the child it was true.

As she was going through the most difficult obstacle, I told her to be careful as this was the obstacle that sent the three to the hospital. She made it.

I also told the kids that part of the obstacle was to cross the crosswalk near the school, making sure they walked the bike across the road. As the kids approached the crosswalk, I told some of them that we were behind schedule, and to go ahead and ride the bike rather than walk it across. As they were about to fall for my trick, I grabbed them by the scruff of the neck and told them even adults don’t know it all.

Tried that on some other kids and got the response, “Don’t think so.” To those kids I admonished them with, “I’m a policeman, you don’t listen to the police?”

My thanks to all the staff, parent volunteers, and the Grade 7 leadership class for helping out with the rodeo.

Deer hazing not an option, province declares

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Chasing deer out of town is not an option for Invermere or across British Columbia, the province has declared.

In an April 20th decision, it was confirmed that the current laws against using trained dogs to run problem animals, such as Gerry Taft Invermere’s urban deer, out of town, will remain standing across the province.

The decision comes despite pressure from towns like Invermere that have been experiencing problems with habituated deer within municipal boundaries.

“I think the decision shows the reality of the situation, which is that there are a very limited number of options for dealing with an urban deer population,” said Gerry Taft, mayor of Invermere.

Vince Zurbriggen of the Invermere Deer Protection Society, a group formed to prevent the town from culling urban deer, thinks hazing has an integral role in any deer management plan.

“Hazing does actually function,” he said. “It has been done and works. Hazing is nothing new; it is sad that they completely banned it. They should allow it at certain times, especially during fawning season.”

Mr. Zurbriggen wants to see the community get involved in lobbying the government to reverse their decision, he said.

“The only option is to keep the pressure on,” he added. “If they take something away and don't give you an alternative, what do you do? We go back to them and say we need this!”

He would also like to see a system that allows council to apply for a hazing permit in certain situations and

for areas like schools and public places.

“There is not an abundance of Crown land in the vicinity. The question becomes where are you pushing them into?” Mayor Taft said. “If we are able to push some of the deer out of the community, without doing damage to property or injuring the deer, then we are still putting them onto somebody else's land.”

It’s about pine

As a kid growing up in Radium, I remember lying in bed with the window open on hot summer nights, listening to the chug and clang of the sawmill a few blocks away.

In 2009, the sounds of logs being processed and stacked, trucks being loaded, and workers calling out to each other came to an abrupt halt with the shuttering of the Canfor mill.

Last week’s announcement that Canfor is investing $38.5 million in the Radium mill and an additional $1.5 million in the Canal Flats mill is great news for both towns, and for the valley as a whole. Many former Canfor workers have been getting by with odd jobs, have started new businesses on their own, or have left the valley for greener stands of wood.

When a large employer shuts its doors and so many workers simultaneously lose their jobs, the ensuing ripple effect is sharply felt throughout the community.

Coupled with a sagging national economy, hundreds of locals suddenly needing to curtail spending, downsize, or even move, has been difficult for the valley to deal with.

The shutdown affected school enrollment, the rental market, small business, and the general moods of many.

Which is why the reopening of Radium’s mill is worth celebrating in a big way. Sure, it’s no guarantee or golden goose egg, but it’s the exact spark our valley needs.

In many ways our area is entirely at the mercy of provincial and national politics, which control the forest and mining industries and make decisions that sometimes affect tourism numbers. People often speak of the importance of expanding local industries other than forestry to make our ability to sustain ourselves as a valley more stable. But realistically, we won’t have the luxury or finances to explore and expand other industries until we find our footing in a firm and steady economy.

The reopening of the mill, the approval of Jumbo, and the arrival of summer are three milestones that bring with them the possibility of hundreds of local jobs, and a turnaround from the past few lean years.

So listen to the noises of construction banging away at the Radium mill and enjoy them: they are the sounds of jobs, money, and a much-needed community boost.

Residents fuel Invermere gas bar debate

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff A proposal to build a gas bar in a residential area of Invermere caused a split of opinion among residents who live near the possible project site.

The gas bar and 4,000 square feet of commercial real estate would be made possible if council allows a zoning swap for the parcel of land, which is currently zoned residential.

The package of land in question is owned by developer Barry Brown John, and is located just south of Westside Park, at the intersection of 13th and 15th Avenue.

Mr. Brown John also owns property north of Westside Park Lane, which is zoned commercial.

The developer’s proposal is to swap the residential and commercial zoning designations on the two pieces of land, making it possible to develop a gas bar and commercial real estate on the land south of Westside Park.

The 4,000 square feet of commercial space attached to the proposal is zoned for anything from a fitness studio, to child care, to a retail space.

At a public hearing on May 1st, Invermere’s mayor and council heard both concern about and support for the proposed zoning switcheroo. About 70 per cent of public hearing attendees were against the project and 30

per cent in support.

Prior to the meeting council received 60 letters supporting the proposed project from Mr. Brown John and eight letters condemning the development.

At the meeting, Mr. Brown John addressed concerns ranging from increased traffic, to environmental issues, to noise pollution.

“I want to see that land built up,” Mr. Brown John said. “That is why I am here today. I don’t want to bring something bad to all of you. After it is built and set up the development will really become part of the community.”

Supporters of the project pointed to the increased population in the communities surrounding the development that would require more amenities, including additional shopping.

The majority of concern against the proposal centered around increased traffic, noise, and the primarily residential nature of the area.

“There were a lot of people with traffic concerns, but that particular development is mainly designed to service people that are already there,” Mr. Brown John said. “Myself, I think that the traffic impact would be minimal.”

“For me, it is the hesitation of hearing a convenience store open till 10 p.m.,” said resident Mandi McRobbie.

“It is the quietest place we have ever lived.”

Another meeting attendee questioned the increased garbage that could result from a convenience store, and the impact on bears and wildlife in the area.

Residents were also worried about the above-ground fuel tanks that would store fuel at the facility. Mr. Brown John assured residents that in the event of a spill there would be a catchment system built around each tank designed to hold 1.5 times the amount of a fuel container.

“We will have the proper receptacles in place,” the developer meeting attendees. “I can’t be responsible for individual people littering in the area.”

John Ronacher, an Invermere resident, said he is worried that there will not be enough backing for the project.

“Isn’t this a really big gamble?” he asked. “Won’t this be just like the half finished apartments around town now? You are fighting a dead horse here with nobody coming forward.”

Mr. Brown John assured members of the public hearing that a tenant would be in place to run the convenience store and gas bar before anything would be built.

“I realize we differ on the key point of a gas bar,” he said. “I appreciate your concerns; it doesn’t matter if I agree with them. I just want to be part of the community, and I am glad to have you all here.”

Council will review the results of the hearing to decide if a vote on the zoning swap will reach future discussion.

Invermere, April 24th • At the regular meeting of council on Tuesday, April 24th, Invermere council voted to remove Devon Kazakoff from the town’s Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee. Mr. Kazakoff was voted off the committee due to his not residing in Invermere, one of the conditions of appointment laid out in the committee’s terms of reference.

• Council discussed the Lake Windermere foreshore restoration project currently underway in conjunction with the Lake Windermere Ambassadors. They voted to put $12,000 towards the project, which will include erosion protection and reclamation of the eastern portion of Taynton Bay. This money will be added to $18,000 in donations and in-kind contributions raised by the ambassadors group.

• The 2012 Tax Rates Bylaw was read a first, second and third time. If adopted, the residential tax rate for Invermere will be set at $3.195652 dollars of tax per $1,000 taxable value, the business rate at 2.5 times that ($ 8.788043), and other tax rates set as follows: - Utilities (Class 2) will be 2.5 times the business rate.

- Supportive housing, farm and recreation/non-profit (Class 3, 8, 9) will equal the residential rate.

- Major industry, light industry, business and other, and managed forest lands (Class 4-8) will be 2.75 times the residential rate.

Radium Hot Springs, April 25th • At its regular meeting on Wednesday, April 25th, Radium council upheld its April 11th resolution to not extend boundaries to include sewage treatment facilities to Radium Resort.

Council entertained the possibility of a further study to research the capacity and demand of the resort.

“I don’t think that it isn’t possible,” councillor Clara Reinhardt said. “Given the fact that we’ve said that we won’t provide services outside our boundaries, to ask if there is capacity to build up and make it worthwhile to apply for boundary expansion at the cost of the proponent seems quite reasonable.”

“I still stand firm by what we have got in the resolution to not provide municipal services beyond our boundaries,” Councillor Ron Verboom replied.

• Council voted to continue to allow the use of portable car port structures within the municipality.

“I think what we need to be really careful of is that if we zone too tightly we are going to have no area for working people, young families, and people looking for starter properties,” Councillor Clara Reinhardt said.

Councillor Ron Verboom disagreed with the decision, saying the structures present a roadblock in beautifying the community.

Invermere battles deer lawsuit

By Pioneer Staff A civil lawsuit filed against the District of Invermere by 14 residents opposing the recent deer cull took a step forward this week, as a fifth hearing came before a judge at the Vancouver Law Courts on Wednesday, May 2nd.

At the time of going to press, the outcome of the hearing was not known, but at the regular council meeting on April 24th, Chris Prosser, Invermere’s Chief Administrative Officer gave an update on the lawsuit’s progress.

“We are seeking to recover 100 per cent of our costs relating to the court case,” Mr. Prosser said. “If our petition to throw out their original petition is unsuccessful, we’ll be going to court in the fall.”

throw the original civil suit petition, he added.

Should they be successful, the municipality will look to recover 100 per cent of the costs associated with the suit from the 14 petitioners, he added.

The civil lawsuit, which was filed on February 9th, included seeking an injunction to halt the deer cull and damages for nuisance. A temporary injunction was granted from February 9th to February 24th, holding back the deer cull until that time. The cull then continued as planned, but only 19 of the permitted 100 mule deer were captured and killed.

The lawsuit also challenges the validity of two Invermere bylaws, passed in August of 2011 and January of 2012; the first authorizing the cull to go ahead and the second hiring the contractor to carry out the work.

Damages are also being sought by the 14 residents, who allege distress, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, nightmares, and symptoms of secondary trauma.

Protect yourself as tick season approaches

By Lauren Gagatek Pioneer Intern Something’s creeping and crawling across residents of the Columbia Valley — both human and animal alike — and it wants to suck your blood. It’s enough to give most the creeping horrors, but the humble tick is a parasitic pest that thrives off blood and is particularly active during spring.

As ticks creep out of the woodwork across the valley during early spring, experts are advising residents to be wary of the tiny critters, which sneak up pant legs, onto animal fur and are carried into homes.

In the Columbia Valley and B.C. Interior, the most common species of tick is the wood tick. They emerge as soon as the warmer weather arrives, sometimes as early as March, and are commonly found up until June.

“Contrary to popular belief, ticks don’t jump onto people. They hang out [on lower branches] and they put their little legs out until something goes by,” said Larry Halverson, local nature expert. “[They] can pick up on temperature differences and increased carbon dioxide.”

Ticks have sensory organs in their front legs that detect carbon dioxide, odours and heat given off by passing animals. When a suitable target passes within reach, the arachnid climbs on and begins searching for a good spot to bite, often around the abdomen or back of the neck.

But once bitten, there are precautions to reduce the

The best prevention is avoiding the bite all together, experts agree. An important tool in the fight against ticks is educating residents and visitors, said Kent Kebe, visitor centre manager in Radium Hot Springs.

“They are very prevalent this year and it is very important to warn the people, especially the locals about them,” Mr. Kebe explained. “We warn the visitors about them … and have some on display here to show visitors what they are.”

The visitor centre also provides visitors with a sheet on what to do to check for ticks once they have returned from an outdoor excursion.

Despite their small size, ticks can be particularly dangerous due to their ability to carry disease. Their bite alone can cause joint swelling, fatigue, weakness and temporary paralysis.

“Lyme disease-carrying ticks are less common in the Interior of B.C. than on the coast; however, our residents do travel around the province, so it’s important they are aware of the signs of Lyme disease,” Dr. Goodison said.“Approximately 70-80 per cent of people newly

Avoiding ticks The best ways to minimize the chances of tick exposure, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, are as follows: • Stick to cleared trails when passing through tall grass or wooded areas.

• Wear light-coloured clothing with the bottom of your pants tucked into boots or socks.

• Put insect repellent containing DEET on any skin that is uncovered.

• Check your clothing, skin and scalp after walking in wooded areas. Get someone to help you check the hard-to-see spots.

• Even if you find a tick, keep on checking, more could be crawling on your skin or clothing.

• Regularly check household pets for ticks.

Movie Review: New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve could be considered the sister movie to Valentine’s Day. But once again, wrapping up a bunch of famous actors in movie reel doesn’t make a great film, despite New Year’s Eve’s many attempts to do just that.

You’d think with so many stars this movie would be fantastic. Alas, it doesn’t quite make the grade. With no apparent purpose, the film is a fitting thing to watch when you’re sick and half-asleep, but the fully awake may lose interest.

New Year’s Eve centralizes a sea of romances around the dropping of the ball on New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Although its a light-hearted film, featuring humorous scenes and evoking the occasional laugh, combining multiple plots into one becomes a bit overwhelming, sappy and all too predictable.

However, the style does allow all of the featured

stars have a chance to display their personality on screen, which works in its favour.

Jon Bon Jovi plays the lead singer of a pop band called Jensen. He also plays the whiney, clingy ex who left his girlfriend on News Year’s Eve the year before, and has miraculously found maturity since.

Sofia Vergara also stars as an annoying, pushy sous chef who skillfully provokes a strong urge for viewers to pummel the TV screen.

One of the more unlikely plot points unfolds when a teen bicycle courier (Zac Efron) travels all over New York with a secretary who quit her job, to help her complete a checklist of New Year’s resolutions. With that fluffy thought in mind, he has an ulterior motive to snag tickets from her to the New Year’s Times Square bash.

Of course that typical “stuck in an elevator” scene weaseled its way into the plot, featuring the awkward al-

most kiss followed by a fleeing woman in a party dress.

You might like to watch this movie if you are working out, having a wild dance party, playing a physically competitive game of Monopoly or doing anything that requires you to be distracted from the TV screen for the better part of an hour.

One can only hope no more holidays are taken up by love stories in film — Good Friday, Victoria Day, Remembrance Day; it’s getting out of hand.

If you’re going to pick out a romantic comedy to watch, make it Valentine’s Day. Movies of this sort should only be produced once.

First Nations’ racer blasts through snowboard season

Young valley snowboarder Faro Burgoyne has Olympic aspirations. The up-and-coming athlete has just completed a snowboard racing season packed with strong finishes all over Canada and the United States.

The 19-year-old’s dedication and training are focused towards the hopes of eventually competing in World Cups, World Championships and ultimately, the Olympics.

Faro was an avid skier until the age of nine when he decided snowboarding looked more up his street. His racing career took off when he joined David Thompson Secondary School’s ski and snowboard team.

After graduating high school, Faro searched for a team to train with and decided to join the Calgary Snowboard Club, with head coach Mark Ballard.

He competes in three snowboard-racing disciplines: parallel giant slalom, banked slalom and snowboardcross.

“I enjoy snowboard-cross the most because it’s more adrenaline and danger, plus there are four people going down the hill at once,” Faro said.

Although snowboard-cross is his favorite, Faro competes in more parallel giant slalom during a season, he said.

This year, Faro competed in all nine North American Cup races held across Canada and the United States.

Highlights included a 15th place finish in Steamboat Springs, Colorado; 2nd at the Neil Edgeworth Banked Slalom at Big White; and 2nd at the Panorama Easy Rider Cup. At junior nationals, he placed 14th in snowboard cross and 10th in giant slalom.

But these impressive results didn’t come without facing some setbacks. During a snowboard-cross at Lake Louise, Faro was competing in the final heat when he took a jump too fast and landed hard on his shoulder. He was knocked unconscious and ended up with a third-degree shoulder separation — a sprain of the ligaments.

“I was out for a month so when I jumped back into it, I was getting killed really badly,”

Faro said. “That injury slowed me down a lot.”

Despite the pain, Faro jumped on a plane to Quebec a month later where he competed in a North American cup race, and also for a spot in a World Cup race.

To get to this stage in his career, Faro has had to make sacrifices, he explained. The 19-year-old always works throughout the summer to save the money needed for racing expenses, and has to tackle the task of securing sponsorship to help with the spiralling costs.

“I want to give a big thanks to the community to the support they’ve given me both financially and morally,” Faro added. “My band [Akisqnuk] isn’t helping me out, so to the people who have helped me, thank you, it’s huge.”

Faro gets his inspiration from his coach Mark Fawcett, the head snowboard coach of the Alpine Snowboard Team.

“He’s a super rad dude and he’s the legend of snowboarding,” Faro said. “He’s really inspiring.”

This summer, Faro will undertake a specialized training program and train with teammates at on-snow camps to prepare for the 2012/2013 season.

When he’s not snowboarding or training, Faro enjoys swimming, wakeboarding, hunting, fishing, and anything outdoors.

Bird enthusiasts are winging their way towards the Columbia Valley for the start of next week’s Wings Over the Rockies festival, from May 7th to 13th.

“It is a celebration of the return of the waterfowl and the start of birding, hiking, and the outdoor season,” said Jim Bonny, festival chair. “For a lot of people it is going to be their first outing of the year.”

Wings Over the Rockies has 67 events this year, 23 of which are already sold out. Adventurers and bird aficionados will be able to get their feathers wet in a multitude of different activities, including kayaking and canoeing tours of the lakes and waterways, trail walks to the Thunder Hill Mine, and birding adventures throughout the wetlands.

“It is the largest festival of its kind in Western Canada,” Mr. Bonny said. “We have the mountains. We have the wetlands and we have lots of nature. We have a lot to show people and a lot to be proud of.”

The Wings festival has grown considerably during its 16 years. The bird watching activities have been expanded over the years to create an all-encompassing celebration of the outdoors, Mr. Bonny said.

“I think it has evolved into a broader nature festival, with birding being one aspect of it. Everyone can find something for themselves at the event.”

Protecting the ecosystem in the Columbia Valley while showcasing the area to as many visitors as possible presents a challenge to organizers.

“All of the events have maximums, depending on the sensitivity,” Mr. Bonny said. “Most of the wetland walks

are limited to between 12 and 15 people.”

“The guides know what they are doing. We keep people to established trails as much as possible.”

The world of bird watching has added a technical twist in recent years, which is incorporated into some activities offered at Wings. Birding equipment now ranges from the contemporary field guide, notebook and binoculars to laptops and Internet downloads.

“We have people that have autobahn downloads on their iPads,” Mr. Bonny said. “If they are out at night they can make a hooting owl sound and quite often the owls will answer back. People are actually bringing these level of technological aids with them.”

Even the most tech-savvy gadget fiend might still have trouble finding some of the rarest birds at Wings.

“We had an extremely rare Eurasian Collared Dove a few years ago that people hadn't seen before,” Mr. Bonny said.

Several celebrity adventurers will be adding star power to this year’s festival. Bruce Kirkby, Globe and Mail columnist and celebrity explorer, will be a keynote speaker at the Gala banquet on May 12th at Pynelogs Cultural Centre. Mr. Kirkby is know for riding a horse across Mongolia, and a camel across the world's largest sand desert in Arabia's Empty Quarter. The intrepid explorer has also hiked across Iceland and sea kayaked the east coast of Greenland.

Local photographer and mountain climber Pat Morrow will also be taking part in this year’s Wings festival.

Mr. Morrow is hosting the Wings Art Show at the Pynelogs Cultural Centre and has compiled 36 photographs from local artists and photographers collectively showcasing the mountains.

The Weber family farmhouse in Edgewater, a popular spot for wedding photography featured in the 2010 Columbia Valley Map Book, was demolished on April 16th.

“It really has always been an attraction for a lot of people,” Gerry Wilke, Area G Director said. The home was originally purchased by the Weber family around 1912. The home sold to George and Dorothy Landsburg in the early 1920s. The landmark switched hands again when it came to Danish settler, Chris Carlson, who lived on the land till 1985.

YOUR MONEY Designating a beneficiary

A beneficiary designation determines who benefits from a person’s estate in the event that they pass away.

There are a number of assets for which people can designate a beneficiary outside of a will, including life insurance, Registered Pension Plans, Registered Retirement Savings Plans, Registered Retirement Income Funds and Tax-free Savings Accounts.

When buying life insurance or opening an RRSP, many people find it’s best to name one or more beneficiaries, such as a spouse and/or a child.

By doing so, upon their death, assets will flow directly to the beneficiaries and not get tied up in probate.

In some cases however, it may best to name the will as a beneficiary and let a person’s will take care of their estate to avoid potential oversights that can occur with individual beneficiary designations.

Naming the estate When a beneficiary designation is a person’s estate, the proceeds of assets are distributed according to the terms of their will.

For example, if a mother names her estate as the beneficiary of her Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) account rather than her three children, when she passes away her RRIF proceeds will go into her estate and then be distributed according to her will. This allows a person to easily divide the proceeds of their estate in any manner of their choosing.

Limitations of named beneficiaries When using named beneficiaries on assets, it’s important to realize their limitations. Changes such as births, deaths or divorce can be particularly difficult to communicate through a blanket beneficiary designation on an RRSP or life insurance contract.

For instance, most of these contracts allow for primary and contingent beneficiaries, but not for more specific details, such as, “my spouse, and if my spouse predeceases me, my 3 children equally, and if one of those children predecease me, their share be allocated to their children equally.” A will, on the other hand, allows for the division of property in any manner.

Named beneficiaries and divorce Sometimes people are confused by the legal terminology in divorce settlements, separation agreements and the like, and assume that severing all ties with a spouse also takes care of any beneficiary designations on assets such as life insurance policies and RRSP accounts.

This is understandable, and is often because legal documents may contain clauses to ensure ex-spouses won’t make claims against each other’s estates.

Receiving money as a designated beneficiary, however, is not considered making a claim, so these clauses do not apply. In any case, it’s important to remember that nothing will automatically change a beneficiary designation.

Best uses for beneficiaries The best uses for named beneficiaries are when an estate is simple, such as naming a spouse as a primary beneficiary and children as contingent beneficiaries.

However, if a beneficiary predeceases the asset owner, the designations will have to be updated immediately.

It is generally best to use a will when estate proceeds are being used to set up trusts for underage children or handicapped adult children. Any terms wished by the parent can be specified in the will, such as the provisions for children to receive funds when they reach a certain age.

A will is also useful when delegating assets to nontraditional beneficiaries, such as charities or to a large number of extended relatives.

Stay on top of your estate In order to stay on top of your estate, keep track of your beneficiary designations. Maintain up-to-date lists of all your assets and whether or not a specific beneficiary has been named to each, either directly or through your will, and review it at least annually to ensure everything is up to date.

Always make sure your executor is kept apprised of the existence and location of your most recent will.

For a professional opinion, discuss any major changes to your estate with your financial advisor and your lawyer. He or she will help to ensure that your beneficiary designations and will are appropriately accomplishing your wishes.

Benefit to be held tomorrow for avalanche victim

By Lauren Gagatek Pioneer Intern A local avalanche victim buried in a slide at Panorama last month is on the road to recovery, with a benefit being held in her honour tomorrow.

Sarah Adamson, from Invermere, was caught in a class three avalanche while skiing out-of-bounds near Panorama Mountain Village on April 1st.

Sarah —who was skiing with partner Justin Futa in an area known as Jessie’s Monster, near Taynton Bowl — suffered severe injuries including a shattered leg and fractured vertibrae, after she was swept over a cliff during the slide.

She was airlifted to Invermere & District Hospital and treated there, in Cranbrook and Calgary.

“Sarah’s recovery process is going as well as can be

expected,” Mr. Futa said. “A wonderful thank you goes to all the friends and family and helping hands around the Invermere community.”

A benefit to support Sarah’s recovery will be held tomorrow evening, at the Elements Grill at Copper Point Resort in Invermere. The evening, dubbed Sarah De Mayo, will feature a Mexican-themed buffet, silent auction, DJ and cocktails.

Tickets cost $40 and can be purchased at the door.

The money raised through the event will go towards assisting Sarah with medical expenses.

The doors to the event will open at 5 p.m. and dinner will start at 6 p.m. DJ Futa will be performing after dinner, with attendees encouraged to bring their dancing shoes.

Windstorm claims lives of eagle chicks

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff High winds stole the lives of two special friends of the Fairmont Hot Springs community on Sunday, April 24th. A pair of baby eagles were killed when their nest tumbled out of its tree. “It came down during the big wind at about 3:40 p.m.,� said Lynda Devenish, a Fairmont resident who lives just steps from the former nest site. “I went out at about 4 p.m. and the babies were still warm, but they were dead.�

After making the grisly discovery, Ms. Devenish looked through the nest remains, spotting all sorts of food scattered through the nest that had been gathered for the babies. Fish, squirrels and deer bones were all present. “One of them had fish eggs in its mouth,� Ms. Devenish said.

One young bird weighed around two pounds and the other, about half that weight, she estimated. The nest was eight feet wide, and situated just steps away from Ms. Devenish's property.

The Fairmont resident had grown accustomed to the neighbourhood's unofficial mascots. “Having all this lovely nature around us is part of life here,� she explained. “This has been such a heartbreak to the residences, but also to the people who play golf here.

Everyone looks up and tries to figure out how many heads are sticking up. How many babies are there?�

Bobbie Charter lives a block from the nest and said she hopes the eagles will rebuild. “It is so important for our community to have these eagles,� she said. “We are hoping that they will stay. This

nest has been so perfect.�

The tumble and crash has upset many animal lovers in the Fairmont community. “Everybody has been phoning and saying that the thought of not having that nest, or not being able to see the eagles is terrible,� Ms. Charter said.

After receiving news of the incident, Mark Zehnder, Invermere veterinarian, arrived on scene. “The parents were flying around and one of them had a fish, probably the male,� he said. “He was still parenting and trying to figure out what was going on.� “I just went to see, by some fluke of nature, that maybe there would be another one there that was still alive.�

A Day in Court

Canadians are living longer and costs for the Old Age Security (OAS) are rising.

On April 1, 2023 the Government of Canada plans to start raising the age of eligibility for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67.*

Court was in session at the Invermere Provincial Law Court on Wednesday, April 25th, presided over by the Honorable Judge W. G. Sheard.

• Kyle Regis Collin pleaded guilty to one count of driving with a suspended driver’s license. On March 22nd, 2011, Mr. Collin drove a black pickup truck into mud where it became stuck just outside a residence in Edgewater.

He couldn’t back out and so continued to drive through a fence and run over a small tree, leaving visible tire tracks to the street, Crown prosecution reported.

Mr. Collin then drove the truck into the passenger-side door of the car his girlfriend was driving, causing enough damage to make the car undrivable, prosecution added.

When he arrived on the scene, the attending RCMP member, Constable Scott Myers, spoke to witnesses who said the driver of the truck was wearing a red plaid jacket matching the jacket Mr. Collin had on. Mr. Collin was standing beside the black truck showing signs of intoxication, the court heard. He was arrested immediately.

Mr. Collin received an intermittent 15-day sentence to be served at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre. The damage to the vehicle totalled $6,400, $3,000 of which Mr. Collin has already paid through an ICBC claim. He was ordered by the court to pay the remainder.

• Steven Douglas Clowers pleaded guilty to one count of causing a disturbance.

On August 16th, 2011, at around 12:45 a.m., Mr. Clowers was wandering on the southbound highway lane near Setetkwa Golf Course causing a disturbance by preventing oncoming cars from passing, the court heard.

The constable who attended observed that Mr. Clowers smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, glassy eyes, Crown prosecution said. Mr. Clowers was fined $300, plus a victim surcharge of $45.

• Edward M. English pleaded guilty to one count of assault and two counts of breach of an undertaking.

At 8:30 a.m. on September 22nd, 2011, Mr. English assaulted a woman in their shared home, the court heard. Mr. English showed no signs of impairment at the time, Crown prosecution reported.

On March 8th, 2012 and March 12th, 2012, Mr. English broke the conditions that were in place following the assault charge, by contacting the woman.

Mr. English was given a suspended sentence with one-year probation and conditions to keep the peace, attend counseling, and only contact the woman under specific circumstances.

• Colton Inglis Smith pleaded guilty to one count of assault and one count of mischief $5,000 or under.

On July 22nd, 2011 Mr. Smith visited a Radium home to retrieve some medication, Crown prosecution said. Mr. Smith and the female occupant of the residence had an altercation, and Mr. Smith assaulted the woman.

He then kicked the side mirror off her car and smashed her cell phone, before leaving in a taxi back to Invermere.

Mr. Smith paid $700 to fix the car mirror and replace the cell phone. He was issued a suspended sentence and one year’s probation. He is required to complete counseling treatment and to provide a sample of DNA.

Choosing to live life well

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church God has granted us the tremendous power to choose who we will be.

Our character and our core values are results of our choices and every choice we make has a consequence.

We can be victorious, overcoming believers living, as it says in Philippians 4:7, New Living Translation, “Experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.”

Peace, forgiveness and joy are choices we can make each day. God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11-13 NLT, “For I know the plans I have for you,” said the Lord.

“They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope ... In those days when you pray, I will listen ... If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”

Every day we make choices, some good, some bad.

However as we spend time seeking God and His plan for us, the choices, if we heed the direction of God, will be right choices.

The other day I was visiting with a good friend of mine, a successful Christian businessman, and he was

sharing that one of the reasons for his success is that every business meeting is opened in prayer. They then wait for the direction of the Lord before making any decisions.

Moses speaking to the Israelites just before they entered the Promised Land tells them in Deuteronomy 30:15,16 NLT 15, “Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster.

“For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy.”

God desires that we live in blessing in every area of our lives. He’s given promises in His Word and has established a plan for us to live in total victory. He has given us the answers. However, we are the ones who have to choose to obey His direction. We have the final choice, so choose life and blessing!

Every time we choose to obey God’s Word, we are choosing blessing. So I would encourage you today to choose to live life well. It is a choice.

“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” Romans 8:31 NLT. And in Joshua 1:9 NLT the Lord stated, “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Jet Rodding of Sewer Lines

Heli-golfers touch down in Edgewater On Thursday, April 26th, Canadian Mountain Holidays flew their heli-ski guests to Edgewater Hilltop Par 3 golf course for a day of golfing, because weather conditions were too unstable for the helicopters to fly into the mountains.Two helicopters flew guests down to the golf course to get in a few rounds before the course opened the following day.

We will be Jet Rodding the sewer lines on 10th Avenue and 7th Avenue from May 7th -11th , 2012. This program is necessary to maintain the quality of the sewer system. The District apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this operation.
