Haze causing spectacular sunsets

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff A smokey haze gathered at higher elevations in the sky above the Columbia Valley is playing a few tricks with sunset chemistry.

The haze has likely drifted into the valley from wildfires burning across the U.S., northern Alberta, and possibly as far as Siberia, said Steve Sakiyama, air quality science specialist with the Ministry of Environment.

The result for local residents is beautifully tinted sunsets tinged with reds and oranges.

“When you have smoke there are different chemicals in the air,” Mr. Sakiyama said. “When the sun gets lower it has a lot more atmosphere to go through. Some of those chemicals actually screen out, or absorb some of the wavelengths of sunlight.”

As the sunlight passes through these chemical layers, the shorter green and blue wavelengths are filtered out, leaving the warmer red tones to shine through, he said.

Despite the visible haze in recent weeks, the East Kootenay region has largely been spared air quality issues. Wildfires burning across Siberia have caused several air quality advisories throughout the province in Kamloops, Merritt and Prince George, but the valley avoided the smog’s path, Mr. Sakiyama explained.

“During this event, the levels in the East Kootenay did not go up like they did in the Interior,” he said. “I think largely that was due to the fact that the smoke plume kind of crossed a line from south Vancouver Island, through Vancouver, and went through the interior and to Kamloops.”

Mudslide wreaks havoc in Fairmont

The massive mudslide, which took place shortly after 4:15 p.m., tore through the Fairmont Creek Canyon, washing out the road connecting Fairmont Resort to its RV park and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of homeowners and holidaymakers.

Rescue helicopters surveyed the affected area and one person was evacuated by air from the Fairmont RV Park due to a medical condition, he added.

The first visitors to Fairmont Vacation Villas knew of the incident was when the evacuation sirens sounded.

“All at once we heard some sirens and they said we need to evacuate,” said Al Kehler, a guest at the villas. “We were sitting out at the back deck on our condo. We then saw all this brown stuff going across the golf course and it ran down one side and starting running down the other side.”

• On July 13th, a 2005 GMC pickup truck was reported stolen from the Windermere area. The vehicle was unlocked and the keys were left in the ignition. It was recovered the same day on Forsters Landing Road, but had been torched.

• The detachment is receiving multiple complaints of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the Windermere area.

Police are aware of three such thefts where a number of articles were stolen including a Garmin GPS, cellphone, sunglasses, and assorted tools. Anyone with information should contact the Columbia Valley detachment. My message never gets old: lock your vehicles.

• On July 13th at 4 p.m. the detachment received a report of the theft of a Stihl concrete saw with a diamond blade. The saw is orange and white and was stolen from the 1500 block of 10th Avenue.

• On July 13th at 5:10 p.m., members responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 93/95 near Wilmer Pontoon Road. A Ford Edge SUV driven by a 54-yearold German man was travelling northbound, indicating to turn right. At the last second the driver changed to turn left and made contact with a 2007 Harley Davidson bike driven by a 54-year-old man from Invermere. The man took a spill but came out with minor injuries. The Ford driver was charged for failing to yield to a passing vehicle.

• On July 13th at 11 p.m., officers responded to a domestic assault complaint on Wolf Crescent, Invermere. An investigation revealed that a woman had been assaulted. A 44-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault. He will appear in Invermere Provincial Court on September 10th.

• On July 13th, the RCMP were called regarding youths trespassing at the Radium sawmill. A group of young men were found in one of the buildings. Police explained the dangers of entering a property in production, with all the equipment and vehicles moving around, along with informing them about trespassing charges. The youths understood and were cooperative.

• On July 14th at 1:45 a.m., police responded to a disturbance complaint at the Spruce Grove Campground, Fairmont Hot Springs. Four visiting men were causing a disturbance. Police advised them of the possible consequences and suggested they move along. The men opted to cooperate and departed.

were called to a complaint on Fairway Drive, Fairmont Hot Springs, about a man acting in a strange manner who was a possible threat to himself or others. The problem appeared to be a medical issue and the man agreed to be taken to the Invermere & District Hospital. He was eventually taken to Cranbrook for further assistance.

• On July 15th, after the mudslide in Fairmont Hot Springs, Columbia Valley RCMP was one of many agencies called in to assist. A provincial emergency command centre was put in place where each agency involved was delegated tasks. Excellent teamwork by everyone. Detachment members maintained traffic control to secure the area, and worked with Search and Rescue and the fire departments there to search for injured persons or possible fatalities caught in the strong water and debris flow. The RCMP helicopter was used to assist in this search. We are very fortunate that to date no injuries or unaccounted people have been reported. We continue to monitor the situation.

Constable Raccoon Back in ‘76, (1976 not 1876 — have to be clear on that for the detachment members!) I was in training. A few troops were co-ed. Some of the physical self defense classes involved pairing the girls up with the boys. One area taught was called ground fighting. One minute flat-out, anything goes, no rules, just survive and have your partner tap out.

I wasn’t there when this happened but I saw the aftermath of what took place. A female member was put in a challenging position due to the superior strength of her male partner. No mercy due to her size and physical abilities. However, given the position she was in, she was forced to create her own opportunity for victory and grabbed this man by a very sensitive spot. Your parents can explain which spot.

Instant vice grip, instant pain, instant command by the unfortunate man to release her grip. The female officer sensed victory and tightened her hold. The man resorted to fists to gain his freedom. WHAM! Further pleas for a release fell on deaf ears and WHAM again.

The instructor obviously had some fear that this man would never be the same and blew the whistle, which released the grip and provided instant relief.

The price the female member paid for the victory was being recognized as the raccoon officer for a couple of weeks as she sported her two black eyes with a great deal of pride. Nobody wanted to mess with Constable Raccoon.

Abandoned 911 calls plague RCMP

By Kelsey Verboom, Pioneer Staff More callers than ever before are dialing 911 for help, and in most cases without knowing it.

A rising trend in incorrectly dialed emergency calls in the local area is leaving an already short-staffed Columbia Valley RCMP stretched thin, forcing police to pick-andchose which types of calls they are able to attend.

During the past year, local RCMP has been receiving an average of 10-15 incorrectly dialed 911 calls per month. The calls are coming from people who carry their cell phones in their pockets and accidentally press the magic three digits, or from cell phones that have preprogrammed shortcuts to 911, meaning only one button needs to be pushed accidently in order to alert authorities.

Other calls are dialed mistakenly by kids playing with home phones, or even by kids who dial the number on purpose to see what happens, Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac said.

RCMP policy dictates that members must try to track down every single 911 caller, preferably in person.

Each time a misdialed emergency call comes in, it takes members anywhere from five minutes to one hour to follow procedure.

“It’s important, because it really could be an emergency,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said. “We don’t know until Submitted by Staff Sgt. At the highest estimate, local detachment members are spending up to 15 accumulated hours each month following up on preventable 911 misdials.

The detachment is also short one member due to staffing issues, and summer is an especially busy time for the area, so time is precious, Staff Sgt. Shehovac said.

“Really, it’s just causing a lot of grief. It’s an added burden to the members to follow up on all these calls.”

As a result, the local RCMP has been forced to choose to not attend certain calls, like petty theft. Whereas police previously had the time to attend, those who have small items stolen from their vehicles, a bike plucked off the front lawn, or minor break-and-enters, may now find themselves minus an in-person RCMP follow-up.

“Hopefully in the fall we will have more member time to devote to these things,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said.

The detachment commander asks that parents educate their children about the use of 911, and that everyone check their cell phones or carry them in a way to ensure the emergency number can’t be dialed accidentally.

“To have one person dial 911 by accident once in their lifetime, it seems like no big deal,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said. “But nowadays, everyone has a cell phone and when you add all those people up, the problem really compounds.” do take note and when necessary follow up. After last week’s Jeers, I reviewed the files of July 5th and it appears that officers were responding to a disturbance/assault from a dementia patient at the hospital, where staff were at risk.

It has nothing to do with our job being important; it’s about persons in distress and a potentially harmful situation. Lights and sirens need to be activated and getting there safely is always the numberone priority — for those on the road and for our own safety. This was the case on July 5th. Anytime we are going Code 3 (lights and sirens) to an incident there is a risk to the public and to ourselves. The rules of the road for the police are strict and guided by written policy.

Mud doesn’t dampen spirit

The recent mudslide at Fairmont Hot Springs is a disaster that thankfully wasn’t too disastrous.

I suppose that statement depends on what you consider a disaster.

The tonnes of mud, boulders, and large trees that flowed freely down the mountainside and across the golf course caused millions of dollars in damage. This is a horrific situation, there’s no doubt.

But to me, the definition of a true disaster includes more than property loss; it means loss of life, or injured persons. It is truly miraculous that in such a populated and highly-visited area, the tumultuous hand of Mother Nature didn’t take more than it did in Fairmont.

Where residents could have panicked, they banded together. The true neighbourly spirit of the Columbia Valley showed itself at just the right time, which is a proud measure of success for our area.

When residents and visitors were forced to leave their homes, other valley residents were quick to offer places of refuge in their own houses, cooking meals and providing a warm bed for those temporarily displaced. Campers stranded at Fairmont RV Park shared food, supplies, and even medication. Residents pitched in wherever they could, often getting muddy to help people they had never met.

Fairmont property owner, Jim Brown, told The Pioneer his story, his eyes welling with emotion. At the time of the slide, he was staying with his wife, who is in hospital, and was uncertain how his property fared during the catastrophe. A few days after the incident, he drove to his property, to find that volunteers had taken hours to build levees and sandbag walls to divert the water away from his home. He expressed his gratitude to these unknown volunteers for saving his basement, saying the sense of community he feels here is like that he grew up with in rural Saskatchewan.

We can all be thankful that the Fairmont mudslide didn’t end up like the fatal slide in Johnsons Landing, and that when it really matters, residents behave like family.

Historical Lens sparks memories Dear Editor: Regarding the Historical Lens photograph that appeared in your July 13th edition: the photo was taken on the grounds of what was then known as Windermere Beach, with 12 cottages, a campground and camp store.

It was constructed, operated and owned by my parents, Walter and Eleanor Stoddart (and silent partner, Lloyd Tegart), from 1940 until its sale to the Deans (about 1952), who later sold to the Calgary developer who built Terra Vista.

My parents often donated the use of the grounds to local groups including the Kimberley Rotarians, who had an annual picnic there — with my mother

providing homemade ice cream.

In the photo shown (U.C. Sunday School picnic), I identified Charles Ellis, local mosaic artist and mountaineer (holding an ice cream cone, rear row) and standing to his left is Mrs. Howard Cleland, mother of Audrey Osterloh. I’m sure many of the then-children and adults who see this photo will identify themselves.

Since I graduated from Athalmer-Invermere High School that year (1950) and attended St. Peter’s Anglican in Windermere, I’m not in the photo.

Incidentally, Brown’s Bay was named for a couple who lived at that location many years earlier.

Former resident queries secondary suite decisions Dear Editor: Regarding secondary suites, Area F director Wendy Booth stated that, “No-one has approached me, no champions have stepped up to support this and I don’t want to push something on residents that they don’t want,” at the Columbia Valley Directors Committee Meeting in Cranbrook on Thursday, July 5th.

“Some people are dead-set against it [allowing secondary suites] and, although a letter was sent to the paper, nobody has spoken out in favour,” she added.

Radium’s Mayor Dee Conklin stated that, “If there is no appetite right now, as Director Booth said, in two years, if all of a sudden things change, then she has something to go on.

“Right now, with the responses she got she would be committing political suicide to move ahead.”

As a former owner of a home in Riverview North (an R1 designated neighbourhood in Fairmont Hot Springs), I am confused about Wendy’s comments.

Approximately three years ago a home was built on Carnoustie Place in Fairmont with an illegal suite.

The homeowner could not get an occupancy permit to move in because the

building inspectors discovered the illegal suite after the house was completed.

The homeowner was encouraged by Wendy and the other Regional District board members to get the bylaws relaxed to revise his lot from R1 to R2 zoning to allow for this illegal suite.

The majority of the homeowners in the 32-home subdivision spoke out against the change. There was a complete disregard for a democratic process as Wendy and the rest of the area directors voted in favor of relaxing the bylaws to make the illegal suite legal.

Wendy, what has changed over the last few years for you to do a complete flip on this contentious issue?

Experts needed for water decisions Share the road

Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to Heather Leschied’s letter, ‘Let’s all share watershed governance,’ in the July 13th edition. As you state Heather, and in my previous letter I also stated, that those interested in the waters of British Columbia should get involved with the process and act on those discussions.

Like you, I attended the day-long discussions in Nelson. I too contributed numerous suggestions and ideas within the online discussion precipitated by MLA John Slater, who is in charge of revamping the Water Act. I am still in contact and dialogue with him.

However, I still maintain that Wildsight or any other advocacy group does not have the expertise to make decisions towards water management, watershed management nor for aquifers, rivers or lakes.

You and I, Wildsight and councils can and certainly should contribute concerns, suggestions and pertinent local knowledge about an area, but making decisions on the watershed? Never.

Any government allowing that to happen would have abdicated the responsibility for which we hired those individuals through the election process. We as society did not hire Wildsight or Invermere or Radium councils to make decisions to manage aquifers, rivers or watersheds, no mat-

ter how much you and they want to make these decisions.

I know our MLA, Norm Macdonald, would have you and others think that is what should be his reality, but then if that occurs, we may as well fire the man and save the province about $100,000+ per year. But then we have the same type of chaos as is occurring in California.

Should Wildsight contribute? Yes. Should Invermere or Radium councils contribute? Yes, absolutely. Should you and they make the decisions? NEVER. Wildsight and councils at municipal levels don’t have the expertise or the knowledge to make those complex decisions.

Yes, Heather, you get paid, I believe, to attend different advocacy and special interest group meetings. And yes, because you have that exposure to those groups, you might or might not have more information at your fingertips, but that does not change the fact that you are simply working for an advocacy group.

I believe Wildsight has done some good work over the years, some dumb work as well, but some good. But Wildsight was not hired to make decisions on a provincial or municipal level on public assets, in this case forestry, mining, water and access. Our politicians were hired through the electoral process. Not Wildsight. Sorry.

Letter writer refutes inaccuracy claims Dear Editor: Regarding the Letter to the Editor ‘Let’s all share watershed governance’ in your July 13th edition, there were no inaccuracies in my letter of last week (‘Watershed governance belongs to the province’).

Ms. Verboom asked for opinions on who should be involved in watershed governance. I stated my opinion that the provincial government should be the ONLY

agency involved in this and should not be trying to divest itself of this important responsibility.

In my opinion, special interest groups should not be involved in the decision making process at all. We already pay bureaucrats to deal with this. We don’t need yet another level of individuals paying itself with money from grants to create yet another layer of bureaucracy.

Dear Editor: Westside Road is getting busier with bicyclists and cars, and as a resident who lives four kilometres south of Invermere, it is a concern in the summer.

I ride a bike almost every day, mostly south of our place, so I see the issue from both sides of the fence.

Most of the time it is good when the cyclists stick to the edge of the pavement, and there is room to drive around them. I find it frustrating as a driver when cyclists (or runners) with their “me-me” attitude stay in the middle of the lane without moving over. It can get dicey when another car is coming the other way.

I sometimes give a toot of the horn to let them know I am coming behind them. As a cyclist, I know often I cannot hear a vehicle behind me, especially with a headwind buzzing in my ears. I would not get offended if a motorist honked at me, in fact it would be welcome.

Sharing the road means cyclists should stay to the edge of the lane. That is difficult at times given the state of disrepair of Westside Road (that would be the subject of another letter!).

Why can some of them not ride on the bike path along 13th Avenue as far as CastleRock Estates?

For motorists, sharing the road means slowing down and steering wide of the bicycles, but that is not always possible if the bikes don’t do their share.

Most motorists aren’t on that road just sightseeing, but are commuting to and from town, unlike cyclists who are there for the exercise and the pleasure of the ride. More tolerance is needed from both sides.

Also fresh pavement would make it safer for all users. Don’t we pay enough gas/road taxes to afford that?

Council unveils first steps of plan for Invermere’s future

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Invermere’s council is looking to the future, introducing a six-step plan to improve the community by the end of 2013. The plan is just the start of a larger 20year vision for the community, with long and short-term goals to complete by 2030.

It all started when the District of Invermere revealed their Integrated Community Sustainability Plan last summer. The plan, now rebranded Imagine Invermere 2030, is designed to guide the social, economic, and environmental framework of the municipality into the year 2030.

“We want Invermere to be a beautiful, walkable community that has a resilient economy,” said Gerry Taft, Mayor of Invermere. Imagine Invermere will create realistic steps to achieving the goal by 2030, he added.

This and next year will be filled with a series of six initiatives. The first of these will be the implementation of a clean energy project and bringing in a signage and information program for non-motorized access within the community. Also on the agenda for 2012 and 2013 is a review of how to best use the space in Invermere.

A survey of housing stock in Invermere, the creation of a community composting program and the development of a vehicle-free strategy for downtown events are the finals goals to achieve before 2014.

“I think that one of the key arguments for [long-term planning] is that without a vision of where you want to go, and without breaking that down into steps and a map to get there, you are just idling and treading water,” Mayor.

Taft said. “Another reality is that a lot of the new grants that are coming from the federal government require communities to have sustainability plans done.”

At the regular meeting of council on July 10th, council discussed the first steps in the 20-year scheme, removing two of the original action items proposed for 2012 and 2013 for further deliberation.

Taken out of the mix were starting work to create partnerships with community groups in order to create a multi-use community complex, and investigating the establishment of an economic development and sustainability officer for Invermere.

“This action list is meant to pick the low hanging fruit and the multi-use complex is not exactly low hanging fruit,” said Paul Denchuk, Invermere councillor, at the

July 10th meeting. “The multi-use action item scares me because I think it sends the wrong message to the community that this is happening. I don't want us to miss out on opportunities because we are focused on lofty goals.”

Councillor Justin Atterbury disagreed.

“I think it is important to note that we changed the name of the plan to Imagine Invermere 2030 because people realize that it is a 20-year process,” he said. “I realize that we are far off, but we need the steps now to hopefully aim in that direction.”

The Imagine Invermere 2030 plan has been created in partnership with the Whistler Sustainability Centre, a non-profit planning group. The District of Invermere used the Sustainability Centre’s template, but relied heavily on local focus groups and public feedback sessions to generate content specific to the local community, Mayor Taft said.

The scheme is separate from the Official Community Plan because it focuses on the social, economic, and environmental side of the town whereas an OCP deals with planning and land use management for the area, Mayor Taft added.

Movie Review: Lockout secret agent is hired by the CIA to rescue the president’s daughter, who is trapped in a space prison with a bunch of deranged, escaped convicts. (With the propensity for presidents’ daughters to get kidnapped in movies, it’s a wonder they’re allowed to procreate!) Anyway, I digress.

Guy Pearce, hulked up on protein shakes, is our likeable lead, the improbably named reluctant hero, Snow.

We open with him a close-up on him in an interrogation room, responding to each question with a quality quip that gets him slugged in the face. Within the first ten minute we dispense with setup.

It’s 2079. The worst of U.S. convicts are held in a space prison. The president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) is trapped onboard after the convicts escape. In exchange for his freedom, Snow must rescue her.

Into minute 11 and off we float to the prison, where the States’ worst rapists and murders are, well, raping

Reviewed by Kate Irwin Imagine James Bond crossed with Battlestar Galactica, with a healthy sprinkling of Austin Powers. Lockout is something like that.

This unashamedly brash and absurd space/secret agent romp is at times laugh-out-loud ridiculous, but, by not taking itself too seriously, pretty well pulls it off. The utterly illogical is presented with a “Yeah, so what?” attitude that transmogrifies the inane into something actually quite enjoyable. The phrase ‘guilty pleasure’ has never been more apt.

If Lockout were a dog it would be a large, slobbery one, prone to manic fits of activity and randomly turning on you and tearing off limbs. But despite the weird mix of cliché, ultra violence, wisecracks and wanton massacring, the film succeeds where many fail, and actually holds our attention.

We wade into clichés from the get-go. A smartass rogue

and murdering. Pandemonium and quipping ensue.

My main complaint is also arguably one of the movie’s strong points: trying to do too much. From the dizzying (and utterly confusing) opening to the unnecessary (and probably very expensive) space dogfight, the directors/cowriters didn’t seem to know what to cut. So they kept it all.

Explosions? Sure. Murders? Yeah. Space fights? Check.

Laughable sequences where people plummet out of space with a parachute and land on their feet without breaking a sweat? Why not? More refinement and less rehashing of bad ‘80s movies would be required to make Lockout stand out from the crowd. But at least it kept me laughing — I’m just not sure that’s the response its creators intended.

Pynelogs artists get innovative

As summer finally greets the Columbia Valley, things at Pynelogs Cultural Centre have been heating up for months. After two highly successful and very wellattended featured art shows, the gallery is incredibly excited to start preparing for the highly anticipated Innovation theme art show, which will take place until July 29th. This show will feature innovative works from seven local artists, spanning as many genres as you can shake an artistic stick at.

Wilmer resident Japhy Hunt is quickly becoming a household name in the valley. The eccentric 13-yearold’s paintings have been shown in a variety of galleries throughout the province, and contain a dark humour that would be right at home in any Tim Burton movie.

Jim Robertson’s style of painting is instantly recognizable. It’s fun, colourful and has an element of whimsy very few artists are able to achieve. His acrylic work usually begins as a drawing, and like a conductor directing a symphony, Jim’s personality is added stroke by stroke as the final image emerges.

other. His fine rustic furnishings are hot commodities with homebuilders and art collectors alike, and are highly sought after whenever they are put up for sale.

Invermere’s own Deanna Gauthier has been sewing since the age of 11. Her textile work demonstrates her commitment not only to precision, but also to allowing her creativity to guide the needle when it is warranted.

Fernie-based landscape painter, Patrick Markle, uses the outdoors to inspire his creative works. His exploration of the colour blue can be seen in his pieces, which have gathered accolades throughout B.C. and Ontario.

Invermere-based photographer, Joshua S. Estabrooks, will be showing his work publicly for the very first time during this show. His abstract pieces utilize multiple exposures and the blurring of light, and are created in the moment, with nothing but the camera, with very little digital manipulation after the fact.

Caio Paagman’s concrete art has been receiving award after award from the art world lately, and her unique style and attention to detail is apparent in her work the minute you lay eyes on it.

Crazy Soles Nipika Trail Run promises fitness and fun

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Runners are limbering up for the fifth annual Crazy Soles Nipika Trail Run, which races out of the starting gate this Saturday, July 21st.

The event, which is run along singletrack trails at Nipika Mountain Resort, has a new eco-friendly focus for 2012, with organizers working hard to reduce waste, recycle and keep racers environmentally minded.

“We really have rallied to make this an eco-friendly event,” said Beva Kirk, co-owner of Crazy Soles. “We have made ourselves embroidered, reusable bibs, that can be used over and over, ... we’re asking everyone to bring their own plate and cup for the barbecue, and everything will get recycled, so nothing goes to waste.”

The trail run, now in its fifth year, will stick to its tried-and-tested formula: gorgeous scenery, a relaxed atmosphere and a family friendly focus, Beva said.

“The atmosphere is definitely not too serious,” she explained. “People are taking pictures on the trails; some even pack a picnic; then there are some who do take it seriously and really race.”

The athletically-inclined can choose from a selection of five course distances at the mountain resort, ranging from 1.5 to

25 kilometres. The routes are true mountain trails, Beva said, with ups and downs, some steep sections and a heart-pumping scramble on the longer routes.

With trails prepared and maintained

by Nipika staff and the paperwork handled by Crazy Soles staff, the race is a true collaboration between local businesses, Beva said.

“It’s been a match made in heaven,” she said. “Crazy Soles and Nipika share a really laid-back attitude. We handle the paperwork; they do all the trails and then it all comes together nicely on the day.”

The event is Crazy Soles’ only official race, with Beva and her husband Jordie Kirk also organizing casual running clinics and camps during the summer months. Last year’s event attracted around 225 entrants and the hope is to have even more this year, Beva added.

“There’s no limit on numbers,” she said.

“It’s a place you’ll never forget once you’ve been there … the best way to describe it is to think of your favourite place where you’d want to be and never come home.”

YOUR MONEY When to sell mutual funds

There is a lot of negative news coverage these days regarding mutual funds. By many accounts, mutual funds are often regarded as expensive and poor-performing.

These types of statements can cause investors to feel uncertain as to whether or not they should be holding mutual funds in their portfolios.

While no investment comes without cost, mutual fund fees are an important issue, particularly when the cost of a fund outpaces its returns over a long period of time. Here’s how to evaluate your mutual funds to ensure they are doing the best job they can for you.

Putting fees into focus Every mutual fund charges fees, usually referred to as a Management Expense Ratio (MER). MERs are the cost of running the fund.

Typically, the more fixed income products such as bonds, the lower the Management Expense Ratio; the more stocks, the higher the MER. This is due to the buy and hold nature of most bonds as compared to the active management of stocks.

It is important to be aware of how fees impact any investment, not just mutual funds. A more important factor though, is performance.

According to a recent Investor Economics study, the average MER of a mutual fund in Canada is 2.05 per cent (excluding money market funds). A little math puts this number into perspective.

According to Morningstar PALTrak (mutual fund analysis software), there are 1693 corresponding mutual funds in Canada that have been in existence for at least 10 years. Of those funds, net of fees, 70 per cent of those posted returns in excess of 2.05 per cent per year over 10 years, while 30 per cent returned less than 2.05 per cent.

In short, this means that in some cases the fees outperformed the funds.

The best and worst performers It likely comes as no surprise that the best performing funds of the past 10 years were primarily Canadianbased natural resources and precious metals funds.

Ironically, not one of these funds posted a positive return over the past year, with an average loss of around 27 per cent.

The worst performing funds of the past 10 years were mostly United States and Japanese equity funds. The U.S. markets are turning a corner however, and funds over the past year averaged a modest 3.4 per cent return.

In all cases, it’s important to remember that past performance does not always indicate future returns.

When to stay away from funds Mutual funds are an inappropriate investment if they are mirroring the returns of any particular index.

This can take the form of either an in-index mutual fund or a very large mutual fund, which has no choice but to index to an extent. In both of these cases, a person might as well buy an exchange-traded fund and save on management fees.

For example, the second-largest mutual fund in Canada has been sitting on bank stocks for years and charges investors a hefty 2.91 per cent per year. This mutual fund also has a 95 per cent positive correlation to the S&P/TSX Capped Financials Index, which is a compilation of all the financial stocks in Canada.

A client might as well have bought the iShares S&P/ TSX Capped Financials Index ETF which charges 0.60 per cent per year and pocketed the difference.

When to use mutual funds Just like anything else, mutual funds have their place and when used properly can be an excellent tool for almost any portfolio.

The bases are loaded for the fifth annual Ballfest Slo Pitch Tournament, with all but one team spot filled for the annual baseball event.

The tournament, which takes place from July 20th to 22nd, has 23 teams signed up and players of all ages are practising their swing in preparation for a gruelling weekend of baseball.

“It’s such an inclusive game,” said Ballfest organizer Lindsay Johnston. “We have players from 25 to 60 years old ... we get a real mix of locals, second-home owners, campers. It’s grown team-wise every year.”

The Ballfest tournament is held in support of the Lions’ Club baseball diamond, raising funds towards maintenance and upkeep of the facility.

“We’ve raised $2,400 so far,” Ms. Johnston said. “We have a goal of topping $10,000 in the next three years. Private donations are always welcomed and we have a balloon raffle as a fun way to raise money.”

The tournament features a competitive and recreational division, with players encouraged to get into the Ballfest spirit with creative costumes.

The event will utilize all four baseball diamonds at the Invermere crossroads facility, beside the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce building. Brand-new this year will be the Spirit of Ballfest award, which will be given to a player exhibiting fair play, sportsmanship and who enters fully into the spirit of the event.

“Costumes are definitely applicable for the Spirit of Ballfest award,” Ms. Johnston said.

With close to 250 players flocking to Invermere to compete, Ballfest has grown drastically since its inception, where five teams of friends got together for a fun couple of days of competition.

Along with the main tournament, Ballfest includes a welcome dinner on the Friday for players and a home run contest.

Columbia Valley cops earn royal honour

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Two of the Columbia Valley’s finest have received royal recognition for their hard work and dedication to volunteering in the community.

Through nomination, Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac and Cpl. Grant Simpson have been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The medal was created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, and to honour Canadians who have made contributions to their community.

“I think volunteering is vital in any community,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac said. “I think it is important for the residents to not only see us being there to uphold the law and work as police officers, but also to see us involved in the community.”

Staff Sgt. Shehovac has no lack of involvement in the Columbia Valley. Invermere’s top cop works with youth hockey, army cadets, and several charities.

“The biggest success I get through volunteering is getting to know the people who I wouldn’t otherwise get to meet through my work,” he said. “As soon as I arrive for an issue, or a problem, it is not a case of an unknown policeman coming to the scene, but Marko showing up.”

Although he is honoured with the medal, the award was really a gift for his father, who has always been proud of his son’s service in the RCMP and volunteer work.

“My father, who is 89 now, came to Canada as an immigrant after the Second World War and is sick in hospital,” he said.

“I went last weekend to go see him and wore my red serge because I thought it might be the last time. It was really great that I could also tell him that I got this medal because it made him happy. It meant more for me to show my dad than it did to be awarded the medal.”

Cpl. Grant Simpson was recommended for the award by Staff Sgt. Shehovac.

“It is quite an honour for me to be recognized by my boss for the work that I have done,” Cpl. Simpson said.

“It’s a humbling experience.”

Cpl. Simpson was recognized for his hard work in coaching youth sports, like soccer and hockey.

“It is nice to pass on to the next generation the fun experiences that I have had growing up playing sports,” he said. “It is really interesting to watch them learn, develop, and then blossom as players.”

The valley local also volunteers his time to stick up for victims of violence in relationships. Cpl. Simpson works with the Integrated Case Assessment Team and the Community Coordination for Safety in Relationships group.

“Any time there is a serious case brought up with violence in a relationship and a threat of bodily harm, or death, we get together with our partners in the community and come up with a safety plan for victims of these crimes.”

The two officers have not received their medals yet and are expecting to be awarded the honour some time in the fall.

Staff Sgt. Shehovac and Cpl. Simpson are among 60,000 other Canadians who have received the medal for their contributions to community.

Young triathlete inspires all at Heart of the Rockies

Reid Maxwell, 4, may stand four feet tall, but his indomitable spirit towers above him when he competes in triathlons.

The Spruce Grove native was born without the portion of his leg below his right knee and is faced with a condition called prune belly, which is a birth defect that results in the underdevelopment of stomach muscles.

But Reid has never let his circumstances hold him back from competing in events like the Heart of the Rockies’ Young Hearts Triathlon, which took place in Invermere on July 14th.

“Biking was the funnest part,” Reid said. “I passed three people this time. I like having fun and getting the medal at the end.”

Racers ready to ride

By Pioneer Staff Valley residents can now teeter on the edge of insanity at Panorama Mountain Village. The resort is hosting the finals of the Canada Cup and B.C. Cup downhill mountain bike races July 29th. Spectators can literally stand near the edge of 'Insanity,' a downhill section of the Panorama Bike Park, and watch cyclists hitting speeds of up to 85 km/h.

“The races are very exciting to watch because the terrain is very technical and the racers have amazing ability,” said Jamie Hurschler, marketing coordinator for Panorama Mountain Village. “The riders spend their whole season trying to build up points and this is the final, which is their last shot to do so.”

The downhill event is expected to attract more than 200 riders. Competitors will begin their individual heats a minute apart at the top of the Mile One Quad chairlift. Those interested in getting off the sidelines can still ride the trails at the resort, which will be open throughout the event.

“There is a citizen class where you can purchase a one-day permit to take part in the BC Cup,” Jamie said. “It helps you learn the skills needed to compete.”

The bike race schedule begins with race registration, July 26-28th, course inspection, July 28th, and the race and awards on the 29th.

“We've been hosting the BC Cup for years and we're thrilled to host the finals of the race,” Mr. Hurschler said.

“There are so many bikers in the community — road bikers, recreational bikers, mountain bikers — it would be great to have them come out and support an event like this that boosts biking spirit in the whole area.

The work is complete on the restoration of Invermere’s historic Canadian Pacific Railway Lodge, with just a few licks of paint and finishing touches required before the space opens to the public. The lodge, which was moved from Fort Point to its current location near Pynelogs Cultural Centre in May 2010, is a testament to the work of local volunteers, who have toiled

tirelessly for two years to see the project through.

Pictured, the lodge’s original fireplace dates back to 1920 and was one of the trickiest parts to preserve when the building was moved by flatbed truck. The lodge will now function as a mini community hall, with brand-new washrooms located below.

Accept a life of service to God

By Reverend Laura Hermakin Christ Church Trinity “Do you know what I have done to you?” Jesus asked the disciples when he finished washing their feet. Did they know indeed?

Many of us know the story of Jesus’ ministry, servanthood, suffering, and resurrection and Christians rejoice in the incredible gift that God gave us in the Christ.

However, as a privileged child of the 20th century, I wonder if I grasp the importance of Jesus’ model of servanthood? I often apply it by choice, selectively, doing things for others as I feel motivated and truthfully feeling pretty good about offering my service.

A true servant has no choice, and gets no credit.

Maidservants and manservants of old were available to do what was asked or what was needed, no matter the inconvenience or their own preferences. They couldn’t delay obedience, negotiate terms, show resentment, or expect rewards.

In service, we experience the many little deaths of going beyond ourselves. Service banishes us to the mundane, ordinary, and trivial; and to great freedom!

Service allows us to avoid the games of promotion

and authority and destroys our need for a pecking order. Belonging to Christ is a gift, and becoming a servant is the most natural way of accepting that gift. It is not easy but this shows our love.

We must see the difference between choosing to serve and choosing to be a servant. When we choose to serve, we are still in charge. We decide whom and when we will serve.

If we are in charge, we worry a great deal about anyone stepping on us or taking charge over us.

When we choose to be a servant, we surrender the right to decide when we will serve -- we become available and vulnerable.

When servanthood is involuntary it is cruel and dehumanizing, but when it is freely chosen everything is changed. Voluntary service is a great joy!

Fear that we will be taken advantage of and stepped on is justified, but who can hurt someone who has freely made this choice?

Jesus tells us that the one who serves is greater than the one being served. He constantly reminds us that we are to follow his lead and give ourselves fully and freely into the service of others.

The gospel really is simple: love God with all your heart, and love one another! Love must be freely given and it must be sincere.

A budding bookworm The annual BIG Book Sale was held July 14th at the Invermere Community Hall.

The event was organized by the Friends of the Invermere Public Library, and raised $7,000 for the library. 800 people attended the book sale, and 103 book lovers were lined up outside the door at 8:30 a.m. waiting to be let in.
