Parks Canada’s Alex Taylor, a human-wildlife conflict specialist in Banff, Yoho and Kootenay national parks, snapped incredible images of a female moose and her young calf traversing Kootenay National Park’s Vermilion River near Marble Canyon. While on patrol, Alex pulled over to keep visitors a safe distance away from the moose.

“As I looked down on the river from the edge of the road I spotted the calf in the water frantically trying to swim back to the far shore, about to be swept down a little canyon,” he said. “The calf managed to gain the shore only a couple of metres from an almost certain watery ending.”

The mother and calf went back into the water after grazing, and onlookers held their breath as the moose repeated the teeth-clenching swim. Both animals made it safely to shore.

Secondary suites moving ahead without Area F

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Public consultation is complete and a new bylaw amendment is moving forward that will allow rural residents north of Invermere to create rentable secondary suites on their property.

Unless amended at Regional District of East Kootenay meetings on Friday, August 3rd, the new bylaw will only permit auxiliary suites in single family dwellings and garages within Electoral Area G. The current bylaw draft does not permit suites in much of Area F, including Athalmer, Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere, and Columere Park. However, a small number of single family dwellings in the rural areas and at Panorama Mountain Village will be permitted to

construct suites.

Almost 30 homeowners stepped forward to give their views on the proposed bylaw amendment, some by letter to the Regional District, the rest at a public hearing on July 24th at the Edgewater Community Hall.

Of those, 19 residents were in favour of suites in their community or for the entire valley, two were neutral, and seven individuals and community associations spoke out against allowing suites in their area.

“I think over time people will understand that [secondary suites] are an important component of affordable housing in the area,” said Gerry Wilkie, Area G director.

“Most people at the hearing supported the concept in general … some Area F residents expressed disappointment they would not have the opportunity to set up secondary suites.”

The exclusion of all communities within the Lake Windermere Official Community Plan and Fairmont Hot Springs Official community plan areas, came at the request of Area F director, Wendy Booth. The request was due to strong opposition from community associations in Columere Park, Columbia Ridge, Spirits Reach and Timber Ridge, and no residents stepping forward by mid-July to speak in favour of the move, she said.

“The electorate is my boss; I take direction from them and can’t go ahead without that,” Ms. Booth told The Pioneer. “Lots of people are against this just as some are for it … it was a pretty even split of opinion at the public hearing.”

Of the residents of Area F, nine contacted the Regional District to speak in favour of granting permission for suites in their area.

Local man charged in Invermere death investigation

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A Radium man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of 31-year-old house painter Cory Jarock, who was found unresponsive in a driveway in Invermere on April 3rd.

Brian Thomas Panebianco, 23, a former Radium Hot Springs resident, was arrested on Thursday, July 19th, in Radium and charged with two counts of assault, one count of robbery and three counts of breach of recognizance (of bail) in relation to Mr. Jarock’s death, the RCMP stated.

Mr. Panebianco was also arrested on two other outstanding warrants unrelated to the Jarock investigation, said Corporal Dan Moskaluk, RCMP spokesperson.

“The RCMP Southeast District Major Crimes Unit has been actively investigating Cory Jarock’s death from the date of report of the death up until now,” he added. “What we can say is that we have an arrest at this time and the investigation is ongoing.”

The RCMP has still not released details on the cause of the sudden passing of Mr. Jarock, despite the completion of a forensic autopsy. He died in unknown circumstances after leaving a house party on 5th Avenue, Invermere, on the night of Monday, April 2nd.

The Invermere painter, who lived in the area for 17 years, was found the following morning in the driveway by the property’s residents. “There is no set timetable for how any investigation advances or unfolds,” Cpl. Moskaluk said. “At times the nature of the investigation does not require or have a purpose for outright updates, in fact at times dependent on what the investigators are doing, the lull in media attention is beneficial to both investigators and the community.”

Mr. Panebianco received a Judicial Justice of the Peace bail hearing on July 20th and was remanded in custody until July 25th, when he appeared before Invermere Provincial Court on two counts of possession of a controlled substance, plus the one robbery, two assault and three breach of recognizance federal charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 11th in Golden.

• On July 27th, Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of theft of two ATVs stolen from a residence at Panorama. The ATVs were sitting side-by-side when taken. One is a red Polaris Razor 9’x 4.5’, 800 CC, with Mag tires. This ATV has a winter kit, a fully enclosed system, and a winch. The second ATV is a silver Polaris Raxor, with red, black, and white coloring.

It is also an 800 CC with Mag tires.

• On July 27th at 11:50 p.m., police observed a speeding vehicle near 7th Ave. and 14th St., Invermere.

The 2007 Chevrolet pickup was stopped, and the driver, a 20-year-old man from Invermere, displayed signs of impairment. An ASD demand was read, and the man blew a fail. His driver’s licence was suspended and the vehicle was impounded.

• On July 28th, members of the Columbia Valley Detachment responded to a complaint of a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am in the ditch near Forsters Landing Road on Horsethief Creek Road. The driver, a 49-year-old man from Radium, was located. He was issued a ticket for speeding relative to road conditions. His driver’s licence was suspended for two hours, and his vehicle was impounded for 24 hours.

• On July 29th at 10: 37 p.m., RCMP responded to a report of two males prowling in the area of houses near Eacrett Road, Dry Gulch. Patrols by the police did not locate anything.

• On July 29th at 3:17 a.m., a member of the Columbia Valley RCMP observed a vehicle speeding in the area of Laurier Street, Invermere. The ‘97 Acura, driven by a 23-year-old man from Calgary, was stopped on Athalmer and Sarah Road. The driver displayed symptoms of drinking and an ASD demand was read. The man refused the test. His licence was suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was also charged for driving without insurance.

• On July 29th, two quads were reported stolen in the area of Galena School Road, Brisco. One is a green Bombardier 400 and the other a red Yamaha. With the good weather our thieves are driving around, and valuable items such as ATVs and quads are easy prey.

• On July 29th, a wallet was stolen from a vehicle parked at Kinsmen Beach. The vehicle’s doors were locked; however, the windows were down enough for

someone to reach in and unlock the door.

• On July 30th at 1:30 a.m., police responded to an accident involving a 2006 Dodge Caravan van driven by a 33-year-old woman from Canal Flats, and a semi-truck driven by a 57-year-old man from Radium. The semi had entered the highway from Burns Avenue, Canal Flats, to travel northbound. The van was southbound and entered into the path of the semi. Fortunately the semi-truck driver was able to reduce his speed. The female driver of the van was found to show signs of being impaired. A breath demand was read, and the female blew over .08. She is charged with driving over the .08 limit and with impaired driving. Her court date is set for October 9th.

Pucker Factor “Pucker factor” is a police terminology to describe something heart-stopping that happens to you during a shift where everything else is going smoothly. Things are going fine, life is good, everything is happening according to plan, wife is happy, I have my brand-new ‘81 Corvette — and then in a heartbeat you get into a lifethreatening situation.

This happened to me one fine day while working traffic. During a routine stop of a car, I got a taste of the pucker factor. As soon as I pulled over the car, the driver sprang out. I don’t like that when that happens.

The man immediately opened his car’s rear door and reached in for something. I really don’t like that.

I exited my police car as quickly as I could, only to see the man back out from reaching in and pull out a rifle. I really, really hate that. Pucker factor kicks in.

As I was reaching for what was, back then, my six shooter, I could see that the man was not holding the gun in a threatening manner, and was walking over to his trunk to open it with his key. I yelled at the guy to drop the rifle on the ground. He did so and I got him to back away from the rifle. Once I secured the gun I turned to the man and asked what the hell he was thinking. His main concern, I learned, is that he knew he had an unsecured rifle in the car and would get hell for having it there, so he wanted to put it in the trunk.

We discussed his poor timing and judgement. He thanked me for not shooting him. I thanked him for the rifle.

Oh yeah, since I was a traffic man, he got a speeding ticket.

Radium man convicted and booted from valley

By Kristian Rasmussen, Pioneer Staff An ex-Radium man who, in separate incidents, made threats against his girlfriend, shoved and escaped arrest from a police officer, was caught driving while prohibited, and was found in possession of cocaine, was sentenced in Invermere Provincial Court July 25th.

Xavier Pichette of Quebec received a 12-day jail sentence, a one-year driving ban and firearm prohibition, and was ordered to not return to the geographical region between Canal Flats and Spillimacheen as part of his probation conditions.

The charges started with a June 4th, 2010 search warrant executed by valley RCMP on Xavier Pichette’s Radium residence. Police discovered 22 grams of cocaine in his dwelling and close to $18,000 in cash.

When police discovered the cocaine, Mr. Pichette claimed that it was for personal use and then lamented the fact that he had not hidden his drugs better.

Mr. Pichette was originally charged with possession

for the purpose of trafficking, but pleaded guilty to the lesser included charge of possession of a controlled substance and received a seven-day jail sentence from the presiding Judge William Sheard.

In a separate incident, Mr. Pichette was involved in a domestic dispute January 2011 in Radium. The court heard that while discussing personal matters with his girlfriend, Mr. Pichette became angry and began to threaten her.

“I will hit your car, smash your windshield, and come after you,” he said. “Actually, I will just come after you.”

Valley RCMP located Mr. Pichette after the incident near a tow yard and informed him that he was under arrest.

The officer making the arrest tried to put handcuffs on Mr. Pichette and was shoved by the accused. He then tried to flee the scene, but slipped on ice. The arresting officer was able to grab Mr. Pichette and the two tumbled to the ground together.

Mr. Pichette received five days in jail for making threats and escaping from the arresting officer.

Man on drugs injured in pool jump

By Pioneer Staff A man under the influence of drugs jumped from the upper deck of the Radium Hot Springs pools, smashing into the cement below.

On July 27th, Columbia Valley RCMP were called to the Radium pools to assist staff with a 24-year-old man who was swimming at the pools and was having a bad reaction to drugs.

A friend of the Sherwood Park, Alberta, man told police his friend had taken a chemical-type of drug, said RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac

in an RCMP report.

According to police, the man began acting irrational, and prior to the arrival of police and ambulance, jumped from the upper deck of the pool, which is approximately 20 feet above the pool deck.

The man landed on the cement and was rushed to Invermere hospital.

He suffered multiple internal injuries, the most serious of which include a head injury. He was stabilized at the Invermere hospital and airlifted to Calgary Foothills Hospital. His condition is serious, Staff Sgt. Shehovac said.

This week, the government of British Columbia is forking over $50,000 to a musical production about the history of forestry in the province. Think plaid-clad, suspender-sporting loggers belting out tunes about working in the woods.

Good Timber: Songs & Stories of the Western Logger is a production that has been running since 2010, but in honour of the 100th anniversary of B.C.’s Forest Service, the government is ponying up to send the musical on tour around the province.

The forestry industry is an integral part of B.C.’s history and economy, and its centennial is certainly something to be celebrated. But paying government money to parade singing fallers and machinery operators across a stage during a time when the forestry industry isn’t necessarily in top condition seems like a slightly tasteless joke.

“This is a creative way of telling the fascinating story of B.C.’s forest history,” said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, in a press release about the funding.

“It is a fitting tribute as we celebrate 100 years of forestry excellence in British Columbia.”

Locally, forestry has limped along the past few years with the temporary closure of Canfor’s Radium mill, booting hundreds of workers and contractors from their livelihoods in the woods. Now, Edgewater’s WoodEx mill is floundering, and has asked for the province’s help with getting greater allowable cut volumes.

Hardly the stuff of musicals.

That being said, the history of logging in B.C. is itself a tale of resilience and beating the odds, so perhaps the next production could feature the stories of valley residents coping with the state of the industry.

Since 2001, the B.C. government has provided more than $2.6 billion in support for arts and culture in British Columbia, which is a great contribution to the cultural landscape of our province. But to avoid the grinding axes and sharp saw blades of criticism, perhaps those dolling out these particular funds should have chosen a different public relations move.

Here’s hoping the real-life B.C. forestry sector’s encore elicits a standing ovation soon.

Band’s court action is ironic Dear Editor: Regarding the article in last week’s paper, ‘ Ktunaxa to take province to court over Jumbo decision’: Very good and fair reporting by Kate Irwin on this topic. She balanced the views very well.

As an aside, what might have been included is the fact that the Supreme Court of Canada, which holds sway over the provinces as well as Canada, has stated years ago that the views and position of an affected First Nation band has to be considered before any decision be made, whether for mining, logging, road construction or ski resort is approved or disapproved. This process has been implemented by the provincial government for years now. This same consultation also includes “spiritual” concerns.

Over two years of consultations is normally deemed to be more than satisfactory by the Supreme Court of Canada.

If Kathryn Teneese and friends want to spend monies fighting a decision, that is their prerogative.

They did not get what they wanted, so they have the legal right to challenge the system and the process.

No problem with that attitude.

But let us understand what the real root issue is here. They, (Teneese and friends) did not get the decision they desired so they are now going to throw a hissy-fit in the courts. I would hope the courts, when they make their decision, award costs appropriately.

Teneese and friends are doing exactly what the anti-cull group did towards Invermere and the scourge of deer. Money, money, money wasted.

But that I guess is fine as Teneese and friends are asking for someone else to pay for their fight.

Ironic? You bet.

Fire department needs winter rescue vehicle Dear Editor:

Once again, while citizens sleep, eat, work and play, members of the Windermere Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) are out there saving lives.

Along with other volunteer kayaks and boats, each year I volunteer my personal services (and boat) as a trained lifeguard for the swim portion of the Heart of the Rockies Triathlon which was held last weekend. Members of the WVFD were also out early on a Sunday morning in their search and rescue boat, in the rain, in support of this event. This year they rescued not one but two people in trouble in water well over the swimmers’ heads. These people were quickly spotted and pulled from the lake into the rescue boat. Speaking as a lifeguard I can absolutely state that these were two potential deaths.

This is same service organization that saved my son-in-law’s life on the ice on Boxing Day. That’s three lives saved by this excellent team in less than seven months, and who knows how many other lives have also been saved in that time.

Aside from recognizing their fine service, I have another important point to make. WVFD is the designated first responder for incidents, year-round on Lake Windermere. Thank goodness they have a boat.

What they don’t have is an approved vehicle for winter ice rescues. Their only approved means of access to people in trouble or lost on the Whiteway or elsewhere on the ice is on foot.

Recently I initiated, and teamed with

a local organization to apply for grant funding for a hovercraft for the WVFD to further minimize or prevent loss of life. It was declined. We were only looking for $65,000 for a unit of minimal but adequate capacity.

My son-in-law’s life would surely have been worth this amount of money.

I am reaching out to the community for assistance in raising these funds before this coming winter. Here’s how you can help: make a substantial personal donation, obtain a donation from a business, assist me in applying for various grant monies available, approach your service club. I am guessing that there is someone actually reading this letter who could donate the entire amount and call it a rounding error in their books.

But most of all, please go out of your way to thank this team. Perhaps drop in to the hall and thank Jim Miller, Fire Chief, for all they do. They have training nights: how about dropping off some treats they can munch on or drink? But at the very least, thank them.

As I write this, they have been working all night in Fairmont, assisting people in need due to the mudslide and are still there right now. They save lives. One day they may save yours, or your family members’ lives.

When he wants to brake Jaye leans back on his seat onto the tee extension and is able to apply perfectly tuned brake pressure to his front and back wheels.

Jaye had to work his way into the spotlight before building his dream machine “In my last year of high school, about halfway through, I decided that I wanted to make the national team,” Jaye said. “I trained every single day, put in the time and I made it that year at the beginning of the season.”

Jaye would go to his first World Paralympic Cycling Championship, which happened to be on Canadian turf for the first time.

“It was an amazing experience because it was the first time ever in Canada for the championships and I was going for the first time.”

Jaye’s high after making the national team ended in a shattering low later that year. He went on to compete in the para-cycling track championships and later in the para-cycling road championship.

While in between competitions his father, Tom Milley, passed away from an unexpected heart attack.

“I continued to train right through and I dedicated World’s to him,” he said.

“That was the first time I won a bronze medal at World Championships on the track. It was very interesting because it felt as though he was there watching.”

The young athlete wants to continue to dedicate his hard work to the ones whom he loves most, he said.

Local theatre fights on despite digital switch

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The days are numbered for Invermere’s beloved Toby Theatre and thousands of other small-town movie theatres across the globe that can’t afford the switch to digital projection.

Most major Hollywood studios have announced this year that by January 2013 they will cease to produce movies on film reel. For theatres like the Toby, which cannot afford the approximate $200,000 cost for a new projection system, the march of technology is leaving them behind.

“It’s very frustrating because they keep changing the date; we can’t really make plans for the future if we’re just going month by month,” said Elizabeth Peters, who, along with her husband Ron, has run the Toby Theatre for more than 40 years.

“We are part of a group of 60 small theatres across part of Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C. and Manitoba that are in the same position. We just don’t have the money to upgrade.”

The Peters have dedicated their entire married life to running a small-town, family-friendly entertainment venue. As the theatre celebrate its 60th birthday, its owners are hoping to hang on until Easter 2013, but said they are in the dark as to whether that goal is achievable.

“Distribution of 35 millimetre film is collapsing as well,” Elizabeth said. “We’re hoping to see some more people step forward and fight for it, like the director of the latest Batman film did. He insisted on shooting on 35 millimetre film.”

Cost is the main factor the Peters attribute to the decline of their business. Not only the extensive cost preventing them from upgrading, but also the cost benefits to movie studios of producing digital movies over film.

While a single movie on 35 millimetre film costs around $1,500, to produce a hard drive with digital data averages around $150, Elizabeth said.

“The quality is reduced too,” she added. “When you watch a film right now they’re going at 24 frames a second with black between the frames, which adds a lot of depth to the picture; with digital you’re never getting that.”

During the theatre’s last few months, the Peters said they hope locals and visitors alike will come out to enjoy, for probably their last time, the venue’s small-town appeal. From the old-fashioned love seats to the memorabilia adorning the walls, and the charm of an intermission while film reels are switched over — that experience will soon be gone for good.

“It really is the ending of an era,” Elizabeth added.

Movie Review: Detention Reviewed by Dean Midyette Detention, starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook and Shanley Caswell, begins by introducing Cinderhella, a psychotic mummified prom queen hellbent on destroying the student body at Grizzly High.

After dispatching her first victim in typical high school slasher movie form, Cinderhella sets her sights on Riley (Caswell), a tomboyish vegan senior with a crush on Clapton (Hutcherson).

After outracing the villain and then failing to convince anyone that the murderer has her targeted, she finds that she has lost her high school crush to a former best friend, vapid and self-ab-

sorbed Ione (Spencer Locke). Her suicide in a school hallway fails as miserably as the plot line in the movie.

Detention tries to pull from too many of the teen horror and comedies that have preceded it: Halloween, Scream, and The Breakfast Club to name but a few.

The problem with the movie is that it tries to hide behind its snappy banter and witty repartee while never developing characters beyond the overly cliché (can something be overly cliché?) fare typical in this genre of movie. The science nerd, the jock bully, the aforementioned cheerleader, the “too cool for school” heartthrob, even the miserable school principal/jilted former student; yup, this movie has ‘em all and more.

After being given a full day detention that will cause the main characters to miss their prom, this movie descends into absolute absurdity.

Time travel, body swapping, a world-ending apocalypse and, of course, the unmasking of Cinderhella bring this movie to a drawn-out and merciful end.

And what high school horror/comedy would be complete without the heroes returning to enjoy their prom? The only touch director Joseph Kahn seems to have missed in this predictable finale is a healthy dousing in pig’s blood a la Carrie.

Rockies Billet Families

Many of our Billet families have provided a home away from home for players coming throughout Canada and the United States. These players range in age from 16-20.

Many also hold part time jobs while pursuing their hockey dreams, and working in our community. For many of these young players it is often their first time away from home, combined with having to adjust to playing and learning a higher level of hockey. In addition they face the challenges of a new school, and community. At first these challenges must be met without the support of family or friends. In view of the potential stress this may present to our young players, the role of the billet family and the security their home provides is very important.

Strong relationships are formed between the player, his billet family and the player’s family. These relationships often continue long after the player has left the Rockies.

Our Rockies have proven to be great role models for younger children in many Billet homes, as they learn and pass on the level of determination required for them to achieve their dream and goals. New bike park officially opens Submitted by Adrian Bergles Columbia Valley Cycling Society The Radium Pump n’ Jump Bike Park will be a hub of activity on Saturday, August 4th, as bicycle pump track riders take to the land and air to show off their best skills at the Pump n’ Jump Jam. Pump track riding is an intense form of cycling where riders gain momentum for jumps and corners by pumping the terrain rather than by pedalling. It is tremendous full-body exercise, a great way to quickly improve cycling skills, and a lot of fun.

Mountain bikers, BMXers, and anyone on a bike is welcome to enter the family-friendly fun competition, which is a grand opening for the recently completed pump track in Radium Hot Springs (pictured above).

The event will also serve as a fundraiser for further development of the Radium Pump n’ Jump Park.

The competition will begin at 1 p.m. and entry for kids age 12 and under is free. Riders 13 and over will be

charged $10 for entry. Registration will begin on site at the Pump n’ Jump park at 11:30 a.m. and practice will begin before that, at 10 a.m. Riders will be divided into categories based on age and gender and the event will feature a best trick competition and endurance events.

Registered riders can ride in either, or both of the events.

There will be music, an emcee, a concession stand, and plenty of giveaways thanks to the generous support of event sponsors.

The Radium Pump n’ Jump Park is next to the Sinclair Creek in Radium Hot Springs. To get there, park on Forsters Landing Road and walk down to the track, or park at the Sinclair Creek Trailhead immediately to the east of the Radium Canfor Sawmill and walk in. Don’t forget your helmet!

Classical music lovers can enjoy the lilting melodies of Brahms, Mozart and Strauss as the second Columbia Valley Chamber Music Festival gets underway on August 10th.

After a successful first year, the Invermere-based festival is expanding to include concerts in Golden for the first time. Five performances by world-class musicians will take place over the event’s nine-day duration: three in Invermere and two in Golden.

“What I’d always hoped for the festival is to be able to expand out beyond Invermere to include the rest of the Columbia Valley; now that’s happening.” said Lauren Robinson, Artistic Director and event cofounder. “We really didn’t know until the first concert last year if people would even show up … we ended up sold out.”

Along with four classical concerts, the Columbia Valley Chamber Music Festival will feature a free family performance in conjunction with Invermere Public Library on Friday, August 10th. Any donations gathered will be split between the non-profit music event and the library.

Led by Ms. Robinson, who is a teaching artist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the concert’s theme is ‘Sounds and Stories’ and it will feature interactive content suitable for all ages.

“A big part of the reason for doing something for kids is giving something back to the community,” Ms. Robinson said. “We want to encourage anyone who’s even vaguely interested in classical music,

not just kids, to come and test the waters.”

The first mainstage performance will take place in Golden on Sunday, August 12th at the Golden Civic Centre, with entry by donation.

The same musical program will be brought to Invermere the following night, with tickets available at the door at a cost of $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

“The first concert will probably feature some pieces people haven’t heard before; it’s slightly more diverse,” Ms. Robinson said. “The second features more strings and maybe music and composers who are more familiar to those with experience of classical music.”

The second musical lineup, which will be performed in Invermere on August 18th, will feature three quintets by three famous composers: Antonin Dvorak, Johannes Brahms and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Ten world-class musicians, including members of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, will be performing, along with up-and-coming violinist, Brenna Hartmann, a student at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

“Doing something for the Columbia Valley feels really good. It’s a place I’ve always enjoyed and wanted to be part of,” said Ms. Robinson, who has vacationed locally since childhood. “The musician lifestyle takes me away but it always feels good to give something back.”

Golf tournament turns 20

By Pioneer Staff An Invermere golf tournament that started as a casual gathering of family and friends is now celebrating its 20th anniversary as a major fundraiser for local youngsters.

The Verge for Youth Golf Tournament will set off with a shotgun start at the Ridge at Copper Point on Sunday, August 5th.

Up to 144 golfers can take part and spots are still available for teams or individuals to sign up, said Darren Ottenbreit, Verge for Youth director and head golf professional at Copper Point.

“We are keen to get locals out to support other local people in their community,” he said. “It’s definitely a fun event; we don’t put too much emphasis on score.”

The Texas scramble-style event is set up to provide funding for young people in need in the local area.

Causes supported in the past include the Windermere Valley Cadets, education bursaries, and financial aid for young people facing health problems such as cancer and heart disease.

The unexpected costs of self-employment There are many good reasons to become self-employed. Many cite the opportunity to do something they enjoy, flexibility in their schedule and broader tax writeoffs as examples.

According to the most recent Industry Canada survey, 2.67 million people in Canada were self-employed in 2010. This amounts to 15.7 per cent of all employed people in Canada.

However, among other considerations, there are a few costs to think about when deciding to become selfemployed. This information is particularly important if a person is leaving their current job in favour of selfemployment.

Taxes Perhaps the most common financial issue that many self-employed people fail to account for at first is taxes.

When a person works for an employer, tax is withheld each pay period and remitted directly to the government. When a person is self-employed, it is their responsibility to keep records of their business activities and pay their taxes either annually or in quarterly installments.

Of course one of the greatest perks of being self-employed is enhanced tax write-offs to cover certain costs of doing business.

Still, it’s important to remember that unless a person is operating at a loss, it is unlikely that they will be able to avoid paying tax in any given year.

Retirement One of the greatest financial benefits a person can have is an employer-sponsored pension plan. This is because when left to their own devices, many people find it difficult to save the money necessary to afford an eventual retirement. This can be especially true for self-employed people, as the decision to save for retirement might be at odds with the decision to expand their business.

Self-employed people should be cognizant of the fact that they will be on their own when it comes to funding their retirement. Though the potential for earning can be virtually unlimited in self-employment, those considering leaving a career with a pension plan should think very carefully about their decision. Pension plans combine forced savings with contributions from an employer, which can greatly assist people in having the means to enjoy steady, often guaranteed income in retirement.

Insurance While jobs that offer benefits such as extended health and dental insurance used to be the norm, they are becoming harder and harder to come by. For that reason, one of the most important concerns of self-employed people is health and dental insurance.

Those who can afford insurance are in a good position, while those who can’t often wonder how they will cover these expenses if they arise. Health and dental in-

surance are valuable to everyone, but can impose significant costs to the budget of a self-employed person.

Another consideration is life insurance. While most benefits plans offer cost-effective life insurance for larger companies or groups, a self-employed person must be qualified as an individual, which can often result in higher premiums. This is especially true for those who are older or with health issues.

Holidays and sick time On average in 2010, of 2.67 million self-employed workers, 68 per cent had no paid help. This means 68 per cent of self-employed people likely have no backup plan if they become sick or want to take time off. In most cases, that means “the buck stops here.”

When deciding if self employment is the right decision, lifestyle and family must factor. If a person plans to work alone, they should consider if their business can handle interruptions. They should also consider how the potential inability to take vacation or sick days will impact the health and happiness of themselves and their families.

National baseball tournament to honour Randy Martin

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Two valley baseball teams will take to the field this week to defend their titles as national champs — this time wearing uniforms emblazoned with a special tribute.

When the Shuswap First Nation’s Arrows and A’s baseball teams compete in Cranbrook at the Canadian National Fastball Championships on August 3rd-6th, the name Randy Martin will be on the backs of every player’s jersey.

Last year the two teams won top spot in their respective categories of Men’s (under 40) and Masters at the national tournament in Winnipeg, earning both of them the Canadian Native Fastball Champions title.

This year’s teams will step to the mound missing one important team member, Randy Martin, who died unexpectedly in May this year. Randy had a prominent love for the sport of baseball, and was one of the teams’ top advocates and organizers. He was also a councillor for the Shuswap First Nation Council, helping lead his community as well as his fellow ballplayers.

“His love for baseball ran deep. He played ball, or was a part of it in other ways, his whole life,” said Randy’s father, Dean Martin. “When you look at him in his pictures, they’re all about him and ball.”

Randy dreamed of his band hosting the national championship tournament, which has finally become a reality.

“We’re trying to fulfill his dreams and do something he didn’t get to do,” he younger brother, Richard, said.

Dean added, chuckling, “It’s still Randy’s team. I’m sure he’ll still have the final say about how things turn out.”

The Shuswap First Nation originally wanted to hold the tournament in Invermere, but the number of teams participating were just too many for the town’s baseball facilities to hold. Seventy teams will instead lace up their cleats in Cranbrook, but Dean said the people and businesses of Invermere have been extreme-

Loop the Lake ready to fundraise for Rotary

This year’s race features three courses ranging from five to 21 kilometres in length, that meander along the shores of beautiful Lake Windermere.

“Invermere is not only the best location for this event; it is the best location for everything,” said Yvonne Redeker, Rotary Club of Invermere treasurer. “It is cer-

The route is very scenic in a way that makes it unique.”

The annual event attracts more than 650 participants and is designed to be a family affair. Participants range in age from four years old up to octogenerians.

The loop began as a mainly local attraction and has now grown to incorporate close to 50 per cent of participants from outside the area.

“These visitors are making the event part of their fun summer weekend,” Mrs. Redeker said. “We have a ton of fun putting on this event and it shows. I think the participants can really see that.”

“To say the reaction on the part of Timber Ridge property owners was negative would be an understatement,” said Terri Adair, of the Timber Ridge Property Owners’ Association in a letter to the Regional District; citing lack of parking, community congestion, increased duress on septic systems and overcrowded common areas as key concerns residents brought forward.

“I was somewhat overwhelmed by the degree of concern and the emotions the proposal generated, particularly among the permanent and near-permanent residents.”

Windermere’s Bram Rossman has been a vocal opponent of excluding Area F from the new bylaw.

“Excluding Area F from these great changes is a shortsighted and backwards move,” he said, in a letter to the Regional District. “I believe the proposed secondary suites zoning bylaw should be implemented across the

August 3, 2012 entire Columbia Valley.

“The proposed bylaw is a fantastic way to deal with a whole host of issues including everything from affordable housing to grant application criteria and many more.”

Secondary suites are currently permitted in Radium Hot Springs and Invermere, and limited portions of Fairmont and Panorama, but none of the valley’s other towns and villages.

If the bylaw amendment is adopted by the Regional District board of directors on Friday, August 3rd, all Area G residents will be able to build a secondary suite on their property, provided it meets the Regional District requirements.

Area F residents can apply on a case-by-case basis to the Regional District to request rezoning of their property to allow a secondary suite or legalize an existing suite, said Jean Terpsma, planner. There is no guarantee an application will be approved, she added.

Limited areas of Fairmont and Panorama currently zoned R-1(C), where suites are already permitted, will be unaffected.

Fairmont reopens lodge and pools

By Pioneer Staff Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has reopened its lodge, RV park and hot pools after two weeks of cleaning following a large mudslide on July 15th.

“It’s been a long hard slog to get water re-established after the debris flow, but we’ve used the down-time to really get the facilities in tip-top condition,” said Marion Garden, Marketing Manager.

“The only facility that will remain closed for further cleanup is Mountainside Golf Course.”

With the course still closed after the muddy deluge swept through two weeks ago, golfers are being offered tee times at Riverside Golf Course instead, she added. For info: 250-345-6070.

FAITH

God is our protector

By Pastor Rev. Fraser Coltman, St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission of Invermere On a warm, summer Saturday morning in 1996, my family climbed into our minivan to travel the one-hour journey from our home to Winnipeg for a family portrait.

My wife was driving, our four young children were looking out of the windows at the farms we were passing, and I was reading a psalm.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber ... the Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.” (Psalm 121) As often happens with me on car rides, I dozed off; but not for long. I started at the sound of my wife’s gasp and looked up to see a car attempting to pass too many vehicles, coming right at us.

We could have veered to the right into the nearest ditch, but instead my wife hit the brakes, turned left across the traffic and drove straight down into the opposite ditch. Braking and turning right she was able to bring us to a stop at the bottom, parallel to the highway.

We breathed sighs of relief that the children were all safely strapped into their seats. The car that nearly hit us raced on down the road, but those he had passed all stopped to help us. With their pushes, we were able get back on the road and finish our trip.

As we drove, we offered a prayer of thanks to God for His protection. We were glad to be alive and uninjured.

Do I believe that God protected us that day?

Yes, I do. The very psalm I was reading was a reminder that our Creator cares for us and does come to our aid and help us in life.

“The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.”

But if that were true, wouldn’t that mean that nothing bad should ever happen to us? No. The Bible is every bit as realistic in its appraisal of the dangers of life as our newspapers. It includes stories of war, plagues, and disasters, but it also includes a unique message. Throughout the Bible there is the persistent and consistent message that God cares for His creation.

God provides good things for us and He protects us from harm. He has acted in His Son Jesus to rescue us from the judgment we deserve for our lack of faith in Him and love for people.

Even when troubles surround us, he has promised, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5).

God is our protector.
