VALLEY NEWS

Dry Gulch fails to find a water solution By Kate Irwin, Pioneer Staff Two Area G communities may gain much-needed funding for water system upgrades after a resident-led initiative to bring drinkable water to Dry Gulch was deemed a failure by the project coordinator. While Dry Gulch still faces a ticking clock to bring its water up to new Interior Health standards by 2015, the $1.8 million of provincial funding allocated for the project could now be diverted to aid Wilmer and Spur Valley with their upgrades. “The regional district has tried many initiatives over the years and the residents and property owners have tried,” said Gerry Taft, mayor of Invermere, at a Regional District of East Kootenay board meeting on Friday, August 3rd. “There has been a lot of effort from everybody but the reality is there’s just not enough money and there are not enough users [in Dry Gulch].” On Friday, August 3rd, the Regional District of East Kootenay board of directors decided against going back

to the residents of Dry Gulch to vote for a second time on the latest proposed water solution for their community. The scheme would have seen the regional district enter into a private partnership with Kinbasket Water and Sewer Company, with a borrowing cost of $300,000 to get the community hooked up.

“ There has been a lot of effort from everybody but the reality is there’s just not enough money and there are not enough users [in Dry Gulch].” Gerry Taft, Mayor of Invermere

The idea received just 26 per cent support from residents when it went to a vote in September 2011. By February 1st, 2012, a group of residents calling themselves the Dry Gulch Development Property Owners had come forward with another suggestion: to

raise $2 million from residents to combine with provincial funding and create a standalone water treatment plant, at a cost of around $3.8 million. “A ‘developer-driven’ initiative to retain the grant monies and build the proposed water system was presented for the board’s consideration,” said Joe Helmer of the Dry Gulch Development Property Owners in a letter to the regional district dated July 19th. “With regret, we have to report that the initiative has failed.” High costs for the property owners group with no certainty of return on their investment is the primary reason residents were reluctant to commit funds, Mr. Helmer stated. With the deadline of the $1.8 million B.C. Community Water Improvement Program grant extended to March 2013, the regional district will now go back to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to ask for a reallocation of funds. They will request that $1.3 million be offered instead to Wilmer, with the remaining $500,000 going to Spur Valley.

Kelowna shooter suspect previously charged in Radium By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Three people were arrested following a highspeed chase in Kelowna on July 31st, where the fleeing suspects fired shots at police. One of the two men in custody has ties to the valley, and has been wanted since June for Radium-based drug charges. On June 16th, Columbia Valley RCMP executed a search warrant in Radium at 7330, Copper Horn Drive. The warrant was issued as part of an ongoing investigation, and when police executed

the search, they seized heroin, cocaine, and an undisclosed sum of money. Police also found enough evidence in the home to indicate drug trafficking activities. Michael Edward Ellis, 39, and Tammy Lisa Vanbuskirk, 39, were both charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Then, on July 31st, Kelowna area RCMP were shot at by the occupants of a green Dodge Caravan while attempting to pull the van over in West Kelowna. The van then sped off, and its drivers led police,

including an RCMP helicopter, on a nearly 80-kilometre high-speed chase during which multiple shots were fired. When the suspects were eventually apprehended, one of them turned out to be the wanted Michael Edward Ellis. Mr. Ellis made a first appearance in Kelowna provincial court on August 2nd, and was charged with multiple additional offences, including three counts of attempted murder with a firearm, failing to stop in order to evade police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

• On August 3rd at 8 a.m., a local man attended the detachment to report his work truck stolen. The complainant had not used the truck, a green 1999 Ford F250 pickup with a B.C. licence plate 968 6EW, since January because the heater wasn’t working. It could possibly have been taken over the weekend but he wasn’t sure. Police are requesting anyone with information regarding this theft to contact them or Crime Stoppers. • On August 3rd at 2:48 p.m., volunteers of the Invermere Thrift Store reported a theft of donations. On July 31st at 10:23 p.m., surveillance footage shows two females going through the donations and taking several items. The females left in a red Chrysler Lebaron with a black top, the plate clearly visible in the surveillance tape. Police continue to investigate and are asking anyone with any further information to contact them. • On August 3rd at 8:24 p.m, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a complaint of a two-vehicle collision .5 km north of the Hoodoos Bridge on Hwy 93/95, Fairmont Hot Springs. A local man was driving north in his 1985 Ford Bronco, when his left front wheel came off at highway speed. The tire and rim crossed the lane and hit a southbound 2006 Pontiac Pursuit, damaging the headlights, grill, hood and radiator. The female driver of the Pursuit reported some whiplash. The male driver secured his spare tire and rim on his truck and took responsibility. • On August 3rd at 3:35 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 93, 15 kilometres north of Radium. A 50-year-old man from Germany was parked on the shoulder of the westbound lane in a Ford Flex. The man made a left-hand turn without checking for oncoming traffic, putting himself across the highway. A 27-year-old Alberta man was driving a Pontiac westbound and did not have enough time to stop, colliding with the Flex vehicle. Both vehicles ended up blocking both eastbound lanes. The passenger of the Pontiac received minor injuries, and the driver of the Flex was charged for failing to yield after being stopped. • On August 3rd at 5:20 p.m., several residents of Edgewater contacted police to report possible shots fired around the 4800 block of Riverview Dr, Edgewater. They reported hearing gunshots during the previous few

days. RCMP were also informed that fireworks had been heard coming from the same area. At the scene, several people told police that they heard a noise that sounded like kids fooling around with a toy gun. Police made further patrols but did not hear or see anything further. • On August 4th at 2:42 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to the T-Bar pub at Panorama for a complaint of a motor vehicle accident involving a possibly impaired driver. The 33-year-old Alberta owner of the vehicle had several outstanding warrants. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing. • On August 4th, RCMP received several complaints from Windermere residents reporting overnight thefts from their vehicles, including credit cards and cash, expensive electronic device, and cameras. In every case reported the vehicles had been left unlocked! Police are reminding vehicle owners to lock their vehicles. • On August 4th at 3:54 p.m., a Radium man reported that a 4.5-litre jug of used oil was poured over his car while it was parked in his parking stall in the 4900 block of Forsters Landing Road. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the local detachment. • On August 4th at 4:21 p.m., police received report of a motor vehicle accident in Kootenay National Park involving a single motorcycle driven by a female rider from Alberta. The rider lost control when she entered a corner at approximately 100 kilometres per hour, causing her to wobble and crash in the ditch. She sustained moderate facial injuries and was transported to Invermere. • On August 5th at 6:46 a.m., a Canal Flats resident called to report a motor vehicle accident at her residence. She said that she heard a loud noise at 1 a.m., and at 6:46 a.m., left her house and found a blue Pontiac car crashed through her fence. Police attended and learned that the vehicle belonged to a 18-year-old Windermere male. Police found the registered owner’s cell phone in the passenger seat of the vehicle along with the keys in the ignition. The vehicle was towed from the scene. The vehicle owner was asked to attend the detachment and provide a statement. He did so and told police that he went to a party and was drinking heavily. He admitted to driving intoxicated away from the party to the residence. He went for a walk and fell asleep in the park, and when he woke up his vehicle was gone. He advised that he has multiple witnesses to verify that his vehicle was missing. Under his own admission of driving while intoxicated, the man was charged with driving without due care and attention. Continued on page 30 . . .

Invermere dives into new lake zoning regulations By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff The District of Invermere is proposing new regulations for Lake Windermere’s northeastern shoreline, to clarify what can be built and where on the busy lake. At a public open house on July 31st, staff and council were on-hand to answer residents’ questions about the proposed zoning regulations. "This open house is about getting people to learn the information available and wrap their head around what surface-zoning means," said Gerry Taft, Mayor of Invermere. “The new zoning isn't regulation to do with boats or speed, or regulation to deal with the foreshore upland. The zoning deals with what kind of structures are allowed on the water regarding marinas and mooring." A key goal for the surface zoning is to ensure that there is consistency around the lake when future applications for on-water structures or buoys are submitted to the District of Invermere, Mayor Taft added. The proposed new zones are broken down into four categories: residential, group moorage, institutional, and commercial. The zones are designed to control new developments along the lake within the district’s jurisdiction, which extends from the high water mark on the shoreline to 150 metres into the lake. Current structures that do not comply with the proposed new zoning can remain in place, and will be grandfathered into the system and considered legally non-conforming. Existing structures that go unused for more than six months (not including lack of use during the winter months) or are badly damaged, must be removed. They can only be replaced if a permit is obtained from the District of Invermere and they comply with the new regulations. Structures that are assessed as non-conforming and

are then added to in a way that doesn’t comply with zoning will also lose their status. Changes in ownership have no impact on the status of a structure. The residential zone, which applies only to waterfront property, permits a dock, swimming platform, mooring buoy, launch ramp and/or a moorage. The group moorage zone will allow a swimming platform, launch ramp, breakwater, and group moorage facility. The institutional zone, which is the area adjacent to provincial and district parks and all lake accesses, allows for the use of a dock, swimming platform, launch ramp, and moorage. The final zone would be designated for commercial purposes and is situated at the end of 3rd Avenue. "This is a zoning area where we would allow a marina to go," said Paul Denchuk, Invermere Councillor. "We would like to add to the vitality of the area and connect the downtown to the lake." Downtown Invermere is currently disconnected from the lakefront area because visitors and residents have to go to James Chabot or Kinsmen Beach to access the lake, Councillor Denchuk said. "I think this is a great access point that would really help because people from the east side of the lake can hop into their boat, go to the marina, and eat dinner in Invermere. It would be a pretty good connection and I haven't really heard any opposition to this so far." The Lake Windermere Surface Zoning Regulations are being drafted in conjunction with the Regional District of East Kootenay's proposed zoning regulations. Public feedback will be considered when Invermere’s regulations are revised before coming before council for adoption in the next few weeks. "From my point of view what we want to do is manage building going into the future," said Spring Hawes, Invermere Councillor. "We can make sure that we are moving forward together in a cohesive way."

PERSPECTIVE

Means to an end By Kelsey Verboom

Sometimes people lose perspective while trying to achieve a goal, and, blinded by their passion to get there, act in ways that defy basic morality and humane conduct. Others rise above, and on their way to accomplish their objective, work harder than they ever have, conducting themselves in a way that gains nothing but admirers. Two things happened in the valley this week that epitomize each of these opposite ways of dealing with the struggles of striving for a goal. First, I had the good fortune to witness soon-to-be Paralympian Jaye Milley in action during a weekend training ride. The Windermere cyclist was The Pioneer’s cover star last week, and watching him power up the road to Panorama in blistering 32-degree heat was impressive. Jaye has no hands or feet, but has managed to become an internationally recognized athlete through years of hard work. Though some may say he has a “disability,” watching his lithe athlete body zip uphill at speeds most people with all their limbs could only hope to achieve, I would disagree. His means to an end are sweat, relentless training, and a kind, determined personality. Conversely, some people don’t seem to care what means it takes to reach their goal. This week a local resident who was displaying a day-old bumper sticker on his vehicle in support of a project, returned to his parked vehicle to find that someone had deliberately dragged a key up and down its side. I have not mentioned what the bumper sticker said, because I don’t think it matters; what matters are the actions of whoever keyed the vehicle. No one in our friendly valley should feel as though they can’t express their own opinion, for fear of having their car vandalized, their job threatened, or their reputation ruined by someone who is so blinded by their own beliefs that they haven’t stopped to consider that their viewpoint isn’t the only valid one that exists. Leon Trotsky wrote,“The end may justify the means as long as there is something that justifies the end.” Here in the Columbia Valley, which is typically a wonderful place to be, there is no end so important that justifies means like keying a fellow community member’s vehicle. If those become our means, we shall all meet an ugly end.

Please use traps responsibly Dear Editor: This past weekend I got a phone call about a live trap sitting out in the sun on a property. The caller reported that there was something live in it, and that it had been in the trap for more than a week. I went and looked and found a little skunk. I took it to where there was water and let it go. The poor thing drank and drank.

I don’t know how anyone could leave a live trap in their yard with no one checking it. It’s very inhumane and very cruel — so please, if you’re using a live trap, check it or have someone else check it at all times. This skunk could have been someone’s pet cat or small dog. LETTERS Kindness touches resident Dear Editor: It’s been a year. Often the anniversary of a dire surgery means an ‘in memory’ notice in the paper. By God’s grace and with your love and support, I instead have this as a time to say thank you. My daughter Crisdon, who was diagnosed with ameloblastoma three years ago, is well into a time of recovery from the jaw-removal-leg-bone-transplant surgery of which I could hardly speak of last year (Pioneer article in December 31st, 2010, issue). She has a few more surgeries to go, but we wouldn’t be where we are today without the kind people of the valley. I had energy and strength because you gave it to me. Regular daily things that seemed insurmountable were taken over by you: home-cooked food and groceries arrived at the house; drives to appointments; payment and donations for household bills; laundry; taking my grandkids for sleepovers; staying with them so they

could be in their own beds when we were off to see yet another specialist; house and yard cleaning; being with us advocating to politicians and systems for rule changes; handling the fundraised money; and dragging me out to play, to have some laughter and distractions. I wonder if you have any idea how much your hugs, prayers, and kindness meant to me. Often I couldn’t speak but you just poured your faith, love and caring into me anyway. And the fundraisers —you gave and gave and gave to us. My prayer is that you never have to know what our neighbourhood will do when a crisis hits. But if you do, if you’ve had the kind of support I have had, then you know as I do the amazing feeling of being blessed with having the valley as my home, my community, my family. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Crisanna MacLeod Windermere

Students build their future through First Nation partnership By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Four local partners are celebrating the beginning of a union that will introduce First Nations students to carpentry while completing construction projects for the Akisqnuk First Nation. On August 7th ,The College of the Rockies, Home Renovation Centre, Akisqnuk First Nation, and the Akisqnuknik Development Corporation celebrated the ‘Legacy Project,’ a $205,000 partnership that will enrol eight to twelve First Nations students in the College of the Rockies’ Introduction to Carpentry Continuing Education Program. Over 12 weeks the students will work with professional tradespeople and instructors to build a classroom expansion to the Eva Joseph multi-use facility (phase one) and an outdoor arbour structure and classroom amphitheatre at the Lakeshore Resort Campground (phase two). The arbour amphitheatre will be built to service large educational gatherings and conventions. “This is a great example of where the communities’ needs and the needs of education really fit nicely together,” said Dr. Nick Rubidge, president and CEO of the College of the Rockies. “Normally when we run classes in the lab or in the shop, we build something and then we knock it down and do it again. In this particular case we are going to build something that is going to stay here and be something that people can be proud of every time they drive past.” The funding for the $205,000 project came through multiple sources, including a $120,000 provincial grant awarded to the College of the Rockies to focus on expanding education in the community. The majority of the remaining $85,000 budget will be covered by the Akisqnuk First Nation. The Home Renovation Centre in Invermere is do-

nating to the project in the form of labour hours and will be acting as project manager, supervising construction and student instruction. “This is truly a partnership,” said Doug Clovechok, Liberal MLA candidate. “Dave Ridge and the Home Renovation Centre are providing thousands of dollars of contributions in terms of labour.” The Eva Joseph Centre, which will receive a classroom expansion during the project, was completed in 2005 as a multi-use facility. The centre has grown since then to become a well-known early education institute, including popular programs such as Little Badgers, Baby Badgers, and the Aboriginal Head Start Program. The Akisqnuknik Development Corporation will be overseeing student registration and attendance during the project. “The classroom that we will have added to the Eva Joseph Centre is going to help us meet the need for student enrolment,” said Lillian Rose, President and CEO of Akisqnuknik Development Corporation. “We have had quite an increase in the number of people who want to bring their children here and we are looking at expanding the kinds of programs that we offer.” The Centre was named after Akisqnuk elder, Eva Joseph, who was one of the first B.C. certified First Nation language teachers and was tragically killed in a car accident. “Eva Joseph provided leadership around the retention of language and culture,” Ms. Rose said. “We are currently making efforts to include aboriginal, especially Ktunaxa history, culture, and language into the programming as part of her legacy.” The student body at the Eva Joseph Centre is comprised of mainly non-aboriginal pupils, which is a source of pride for Ms. Rose. “It is a very proud day for the Akisqnuk First Nation to be able to be a provider of service to the community at large.”

Clovechok running for MLA spot Regional district: By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Invermere’s Doug Clovechok will be running for office in the next provincial elections, vying for the position of MLA for the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding. On Tuesday, July 31st, Mr. Clovechok was announced by the B.C. Liberal Party as their candidate for the NDP-held riding. Doug Clovechok It is Mr. Clovechok’s first foray into politics, a move he has been thinking about since shortly after becoming president of the local B.C. Liberal Riding Association in November 2010. “After being riding association president for a little over a year, that’s when consideration started,” he said. “I’m a free enterpriser and see so much potential in this valley waiting to be tapped. It’s not just the economics, it’s the people. They need someone to listen to their wants, hopes and dreams.” Mr. Clovechok, who manages the Invermere campus of the College of the Rockies, cites a love for serving the public as another key reason to run for the position, quoting Mahatma Ghandi’s well-known saying, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” If he is elected, Mr. Clovechok’s first goal will be to better unite communities spread across the riding’s large area, he said. “It’s such a big area geographically that nobody re-

news in brief

ally knows each other; the issues in Kimberley are disconnected from the issues in Revelstoke, and the issues here in the Columbia Valley.” To counteract this, Mr. Clovechok proposes creating local boards serving the communities, which come together every year to establish long-term goals for the entire riding. If elected, he would also like to establish offices across the area where residents can stop in and speak to someone about their concerns in person, as well as contact lines for those in remote areas. An active presence on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook will also be vital, he said. “People have to feel like they have access to you ... in fact, I had a good conversation last night with somebody online who’s been following me on Facebook who I wouldn’t have been able to sit down face-to-face with.” Mr. Clovechok was born and raised in Calgary and has a background in education, serving on the Calgary Board of Education and helping found the Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation. Locally, he serves on the Columbia Valley Greenways Alliance Board of Directors and is president of the Liberal riding association. He is also an adopted member of the Piikani Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy. “One of the things I’ve already experienced is the multitude of issues here,” Mr. Clovechok said. “Being the MLA is not only the listening aspect; it’s demonstrating that you’re a do-er and can make things happen. “I’m really excited and passionate about this ... I’m looking forward to the next eight months and I’m confident, but certainly not arrogant about my chances.” To learn more, go to www.dougclovechok.com.

• A new bylaw amendment has been passed to allow the construction of secondary suites in single-family dwellings and garages in Electoral Area G and limited parts of Area F. After reviewing the report from a public hearing held on July 24th in Edgewater, the regional district board unanimously voted through the bylaw amendment on August 3rd. Area F residents within the Lake Windermere and Fairmont Hot Springs Official Community Plan areas will not be able to construct secondary suites, although they can apply on a case-by-case basis to request property rezoning to allow a suite. • The Regional District of East Kootenay has voted against being involved in developing a Qat’Muk Management Plan for the Jumbo Creek area in collaboration with the Ktunaxa First Nation. At a meeting on Friday, August 3rd, the regional district board of directors voted against taking on a formal role in the process, which aims to create guidelines for land-use in a hotly disputed area, about 55 kilometres west of Invermere. The Ktunaxa Nation Council will now continue its work to develop and implement the Qat’Muk management plan, while the RDEK has offered to provide technical information as needed.

Verge For Youth hits a hole-in-one The 20th annual Verge for youth charity golf tournament teed off August 5th at Copper Point Golf Course. Sixteen teams and 64 players competed against each other to raise money for families and youth in need within the Columbia Valley. The event raised between $12,000 and $14,000 this year, and has donated more than $240,000 to local charities since 1997. The day was of particular significance because event organizer Floyd Verge (pictured here with wife and fellow organizer, Shelan) landed his first hole-in-one. Photo by Kristian Rasmussen

Movie Review: Dr Seuss’ The Lorax Reviewed by Kate Irwin As shiny, plastic and commercialized as the world it critiques, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is steeped in unintended irony. Even the title, Dr Seuss’ The Lorax, has an ironic sting. It’s hard to believe the good doctor would have had much time for this Hollywood razzle-dazzle adaptation of his beloved children’s book. Where Seuss told his eco-friendly tale with a simple charm, Universal Pictures’ The Lorax (my proposed retitle) loses its message in a mess of Hollywood showboating. “Look what we can do with animation!” is the point to hammer home (and hammer it home they do). Before sticking the knife in too much, it must be said that The Lorax is a perfectly pleasant movie for very young kids; it just lacks substance for anyone older and more sentient.

The relentless, bubblegum songs, garish, un-Seussian visuals, and parade of singing animals, will keep your youngest gawping at the screen while you entertain your mind with more interesting diversions. ‘Did I take out the garbage?’, ‘Ooh, my toe is itchy’, ‘Gosh, doesn’t that orange, mustachioed critter look like Wilford Brimley?’ The Lorax sets out to tackle a real global issue, the plight of the environment, in a rather ham-fisted way. It’s set in a seemingly utopian city, Thneed-ville, which is utterly artificial, from the perfect buildings to the plastic, light-up trees. Following his grandmother’s advice, 12-year-old Ted (voiced by Zac Efron) departs into the wasteland surrounding the city to find a creature called the Once-ler (Ed Helmes) who can teach him about trees. You see Ted is infatuated with Audrey (Taylor Swift), who in turn is enamoured with the thought of seeing a real-life tree,

which no longer exists. Unnecessary love story aside, it seems the filmmakers have rather missed their own point. The greedy Once-ler recounts his hacking down trees and abusing the land to fulfill his greed; the filmmakers factory-produce tons of plastic crap (a cynical 70+ merchandising tie-ins, including an SUV!) to sell their movie and abuse the banner of environmentalism to line their pockets. WALL-E tackled the same global concerns with much more charm and intelligence. Sure, the makers of The Lorax were thinking green; unfortunately it was money, not trees.

Invermere’s 36th annual Lakeside Event is ready to launch on Saturday, August 11th, with 55 hang-glider and paraglider pilots lined up to leap from Mount Swansea and splash down in Lake Windermere. The annual meet of pilots from across North America sees the skies above Windermere and Invermere filled with gliders, entertaining crowds on Chabot Beach as pilots try to touch down on tiny targets on land and on water. “You rarely get to see pilots up this close,” said Frank Kernick, event coordinator. “Part of the fun of watching the event is getting up on the mountain to see people set up and fly off … I’d encourage people to come and join us on Swansea, as well as watching from the beach.” Pilots taking part in the day get one or two shots at the target landing, depending on their chosen method of flight. While paragliders can be packed down into a backpack and hiked back up to the top of Mount Swansea, hanggliders have just one go at hitting their

mark, as their gear has to be helicoptered to the summit. The target they’re aiming for is a small, inflatable ring positioned close to shore beside the Lakeside Pub, or a similar ring set up in a kiddie pool on Chabot Beach (to prevent the paraglider wings from getting wet in the lake). “Target landings are very difficult to get right, maybe two or three out of 100 attempts will land on the target,” Frank said. Along with the target landing contest, beach-goers can enjoy aerial acrobatics from participants, as well as music throughout the day at Chabot Beach, before partying into the night with pilots and their friends and families. A silent auction with items donated by a number of valley businesses will be ongoing throughout the day. The event will also feature secondever Best Splash Contest, in honour of Dano Saunders, a popular member of the local flying community who passed away last June. “It’ll either be best splash or best crash, we’ll have to wait and see,” Frank joked. By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Art lovers will get a chance to peer into the kiln at this year's Columbia Basin Culture Tour August 11th12th. The tour allows people the chance to go behind the scenes at several art hot spots in the valley, including Windermere glassblowing mecca, Sandpiper Studios. "This is all about meeting the people who might want to buy some of your work and including them in the creative process," said Julie Gibb, co-owner of Sandpiper Studios. "I think this event is very important for the valley because it creates awareness for artists." Julie and her partner, Gordon Webster, will be performing demonstrations of glass blowing all day during the two day event. "We will be doing more of a quick process because even though glassblowing can be really interesting and engage people for hours, not everyone has that amount of time," Julie said. "We will be trying to keep it to 20-minute demonstrations so that people can kind of get a Coles Notes version of what we do." Julie's artistic style is mainly based on creating and designing glass-blown vases, cups, and bottles that are structured on minimalism, which was a reaction to coming to Windermere from Toronto, she said "Your life is so cluttered when you are in a big city. I gravitated to a more minimalist style to give a more visually relaxing and simple idea." The artist is inspired by the beauty of hand-made items and the function they serve in people’s lives. Art that can be used on a daily-basis is an important factor in the creative process for Julie. "I want a piece to be part of your daily ritual," she said. "I have a lot of ceramics at home that coffee never tasted better out of." The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. August 10th and 11th and features five unique tour stops, including

The Artym Gallery has been open in Invermere for more than 10 years, and during that time I have spoken to thousands of people about art. One of the comments that I have heard hundreds of times is a variation of, “My kid could paint that,” or, “I could do that myself.” I recently spoke to Maya Eventov, one of the Artym’s most popular artists, and this is my response to that comment: Maya Eventov grew up in Russia, and began her artistic training when she was just six years old. By the time she was in Grade 4, she was attending an arts school. From there she attended an art high school. After graduating at age 17, Maya competed for a highly-prized spot in an academy of art and design, where only a handful of the applicants succeed on the first try. To attend, Maya was required to pass six intense entrance examinations. After spending five years at the academy, Maya graduated and entered the workforce in Russia. Maya was only out of school for two-and-a-half years before she and her husband decided to move to Canada, 22 years ago. Only 26 years old, she was in a new country, experiencing culture shock and a language barrier; what a daunting prospect immigrating must have been for her. But when she came to Canada, Maya managed to bring her watercolours, her paint brushes and her determination, and thus began her successful career as an artist. She now has galleries all over the world, with showings in major art centres, like Toronto, New York,

BRIGHT COLOURS — Painter Maya Eventov will be at Artym Gallery in Invermere on August 10th and 11th, and will be painting live on August 11th. Photo submitted England, Germany, Japan and more, including a modest little town in Canada called Invermere. So after 40 years of training and experience, Maya Eventov’s incredible paintings can be seen at the Artym Gallery this weekend. She will be in attendance for an opening reception on Friday, August 10th, from 6 - 9 p.m., and will be doing a demonstration of her artwork on Saturday August 11th from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Come share in her story of determination, inspiration and success.

Tee off with celebs at first annual Kelly Hrudey tourney By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A new, star-studded tournament is coming to Invermere, offering the chance to golf with celebrities while raising money for youth charities. The Kelly Hrudey & Friends Charity Golf Classic will take place at Copper Point Golf Club on August 15th and 16th, featuring a line-up of sportspeople, TV stars and Olympic athletes. The tournament will bring together 108 golfers and 36 celebrities to support three charities including Invermere’s Summit Youth Centre and the hockey programs at Laird Elementary and David Thompson Secondary Schools. “It was probably 10 years ago that Kelly and I met and just hit it off,” said Brian Schaal, General Manager, Copper Point Golf Club. “We got talking about a celebrity tournament and all the charities in need. Then it took nine years in the making.” Along with Mr. Hrudey, an NHL goaltender for 15 years, the tournament’s big names include Brett Wilson, former Dragon’s Den star; Terry Grant, TV’s Mantracker; Grant Fuhr, a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Edmonton Oilers; and Catriona Le May Doan, a double Olympic champion speed skater. After coming up with the concept, Mr. Schaal and Mr. Hrudey had to decide which charities to support. Mr. Hrudey is a major supporter of the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre (AARC) in Calgary, while Mr. Schaal has been involved with the Summit Youth Centre — which offers supervised activities for local kids and

teens — since 2004. Both are familiar with the Hockey Skills Academy programs at the high school and Laird Elementary, which Mr. Hrudey visited last year to present $15,000 of hockey gear on behalf of the NHL Players’ Association. “I’ve been part of a number of charities and fundraisers over the years and it’s always great to support something locally. There’s also something special about watching the event grow,” he said. “Brian has spoken really highly of the Summit Youth Centre ... I first got introduced to AARC about 10 or 12 years ago when a friend had a son going through the program.” The tournament will include two days of golfing on both The Ridge and the Copper Point Golf Courses, with each team formed from three tournament participants and a celebrity golfer. Along with the chance to swing a club with some sporting greats, there will be plenty of opportunities to socialize with the stars, said Joanne Gray, tournament co-chair. “It’s more than just a tournament, it’s an event, with the social element of getting to know the celebrities ... You’ll be eating with them, playing alongside them, and there will be a cocktail party and dinner on the first night.” For Mr. Hrudey, the tournament is not only a way to raise money for three worthy causes, but it also offers the chance to revisit an area that holds fond memories. “When I was playing in the National Hockey League one of my favourite golf events was here in Invermere; the John Davidson Classic,” Mr. Hrudey said. “I just love the area: it’s a great community.” To find out more, visit www.kellyhrudeyclassic.com.

YOUR MONEY What is an income trust?

For people looking for ways to generate steady, predictable income in their investment portfolios, income trusts can be a good option. Income trusts are tax advantageous and pay attractive cash distributions to investors. For those who are less familiar with income trusts, here are some basic details.

What is an income trust? An income trust is an investment trust that is designed to distribute cash to investors. They are comprised of the stocks or assets of one or more businesses and their units are traded on a stock exchange. If the underlying businesses in an income trust make money, the trust may share some of the profits with investors. This allocation is called a distribution, and is paid in cash. Income trusts typically return 70 per cent to 95 per cent of their cash flows to investors. Because income trusts trade on a stock exchange, they are subject to market pricing. This means that just like a stock, the value of income trusts can vary as their prices move up and down. The income trust structure is best suited to businesses that have mature assets that require little ongoing capital expenditures, limited competition and little to no debt. Types of income trusts Royalty/Energy trusts invest in natural resources, such as oil and gas properties. Their share prices tend

to vary with oil and gas prices, which can create distinct buying and selling opportunities. Because most energy companies are constantly investing in new properties and technology, there are very few energy trusts in the market. Examples are Eagle Energy and Parallel Energy. Real estate investment trusts (REITs) invest in income producing properties such as shopping centres, commercial buildings and apartment buildings. Examples are Riocan REIT and Cominar REIT. Business income trusts are comprised of individual companies rather than a pool of investments. They are available from a multitude of companies, including those in manufacturing, food distribution and utilities. Mature companies with strong steady cash flows are best suited to this structure. Examples are A&W Income fund and Pizza Pizza Royalty Income fund. Income trust funds are mutual funds which invest in income trusts. These types of funds are good for diversification as they invest in many different income trusts, but are higher cost than direct ownership.

Risks When investing in income trusts, there are two main risks to be aware of. Firstly, there is no guarantee that distributions will always be paid to investors. Income trusts are under no obligation to pay dividends and dividends may be reduced or eliminated at any time, just like a stock. Conversely, dividends can also

be raised at any time. The second thing to remember is that because income trusts trade on a stock exchange, there is no guarantee that an investor will make money when they sell their units. Though income trusts pay high distributions, they are not a fixed income investment. Those looking for guaranteed investments with income streams should stick to GICs or Government of Canada bonds. Taxation Income trusts pay distributions to investors, which are comprised of varying amounts of interest and other income, dividends, capital gains and return of capital. In the case of interest and other income 100% is taxable, just like GICs or other interest bearing investments. Dividends are eligible for the dividend tax credit, capital gains are only 50% taxable and return of capital is tax-free. Income trusts used to enjoy special tax treatment on the company end, but as of 2011 they have been taxed in the same manner as corporations. As a result, many converted back to corporations. This has resulted in only the most mature companies remaining in this sector. Speak to an advisor Only Investment Advisors are licensed to sell income trusts. He or she can help you decide if income trusts suit your portfolio.

Fun day fundraising for cystic fibrosis INVESTMENTS | RETIREMENT PLANNING | INSURANCE

By Pioneer Staff Have fun while fundraising for a worthy cause at Edgewater’s third annual Family Fun Day on August 19th. The event, which lasts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include a range of games and activities for kids (and big kids) of all ages, from horse rides to a dunk tank. The day will fundraise for treatment for and research into cystic fibrosis, a cause dear to Edgewater’s Podborsky family, whose son Logan, aged 11 months, suffers from the disease. “Our little guy was diagnosed at two-and-a-half weeks and we really want to raise awareness of this dis-

ease,” said Christine Podborsky, who helped organize the event. “We’re seeking cash donations, donations for the silent auction and for people just to come out and support our cause.” The day-long event includes children’s games, live music from Marty Beingessner, horse rides, a dunk tank, barbecue lunch and silent auction featuring items donated by a range of local businesses. All proceeds will go towards cystic fibrosis research and treatments. “It’s going to be a great deal of fun and the chance to support a cause — a local family’s passion,” Christina added. For more information about the Edgewater Family Fun Day, call 250-347-0077.

Invermere Rowing Club gets adaptive By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff One valley woman doesn't care if her legs cooperate or not. Rather than worry about what her body thinks, she would rather rise with the sun and slice through the water inches above Lake Windermere. Invermere’s Jill Unger was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999 and since then has introduced a personal renaissance in her life. At a time when she has lost most of the ability in her legs, she has taken up downhill sit-skiing, is looking at getting into kneeboarding, is at the gym every other day, and has become a very special member of the Invermere Rowing Club. On August 3rd, Jill was the first disabled rower to try out a new $7,500 tandem adaptive rowing shell the club recently purchased.

"It was so awesome," Jill said. "To be able to glide across the water and go into that lake when the water is like glass is amazing. I want to be in the water all the time because I think I used to be a seal." Her natural ability in the boat immediately became obvious to club member and adaptive rowing instructor, Dave Penner. “She was totally remarkable," he said. "She went way over the top as far as my expectations were. Jill and I are friends and I was so happy for her when I saw the sparkle in her eye." The Invermere Rowing Club has always been primarily focused on including all members of the community, said Doris Penner, club treasurer.

"We are a community organization and we want to serve the community," she said. "I think we get our joy from being all-inclusive." The quest to become a truly inclusive club began when Doris learned of interest in the community from adaptive rowers like Jill. She immediately began searching for grants through Rowing Canada and wrote a proposal outlining the club's blueprint to teach three rowers how to participate in the sport. The club would also train two of Panorama Mountain Resort's sit-ski instructors, Dylan and Catrien Dainard, on the ins and outs of adaptive rowing. continued on page 25 . . .

August 10, 2012 . . . continued from page 24 The Invermere Rowing Club received $2,500 towards their $7,500 boat from Rowing Canada, and through private donations and club membership, will be able to pay it off this year. The Invermere Rowing Club’s first adaptive member started her quest for the perfect stroke far from Lake Windermere in Mexico. Two years ago Jill received a treatment for chronic cerebrospinal venous inefficiency, a complication arising from her M.S., in Tijuana, Mexico, which she couldn’t get in Canada. “They do angioplasty and open up your jugular veins and other veins that are blocking the flow of blood,” she said. “Since then it’s like I have gotten a new life.” After receiving her treatment Jill began to feel her energy return and took up sports like yoga and got back into the gym, but she still had concerns. “There are many issues that you have to think about,” she said. “If you are going to go out on a boat on the lake there are 101 different things to consider that may or may not happen. Jeers to the creepy 40-somethingyear old who hit on me at the golf course. I am 16 years old. It really made me want to go home with you, like you offered, when I saw you get into your minivan that had a baby seat in the back. What a lucky wife you have.

Jeers to those suing the government over the Jumbo decision. You can’t sue the government for making decisions you don’t like. We have elected these officials to make decisions and this is the process. The sooner you recognize this, the sooner we can all live harmoniously. Cheers to David Pacey for his comments.

S OBITUARY S FRANCES VERONICA RYAN July 9, 1930 - August 6, 2012 Frances passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 6th at Nanaimo Palliative Care Unit. She will be greatly missed by her children Dawna (Don), Leigh (Gerald), Jennifer (Peter), Anna (Ken), April (Grant), Mark (Sue); grandchildren Sarah, Sam, Wyatt, Emma, Brendon, Rene, Jordan, Grace, Geena, Jane, Adrienne, Harrison; great-grandchildren Esme, Jackson, Henry and Kael. Frances loved life, laughter and people. She made friends wherever she went and was happiest when giving to others. Thank you for the excellent care and compassion shown by the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and the Palliative Unit in Nanaimo. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 18th from 2 to 4pm at her daughters home - 949 Terrien Way, Parksville. Your smile and laughter will be with us forever.

Cheers to all the vendors at Market on Main for being the best group of vendors around. Cheers to all the entertainers past, present, and future at Music on Main. Thank you. Jeers to the local electrician who was overly rude and disrespectful in regards to a pizza coupon. Way to be a mature adult towards a teen. Cheers to the guys from DCS Plumbing and the District of Invermere for coming out on a Sunday to do a job. Cheers to Andrea P. at BMO. Never in all my years of banking have I never experienced customer service like I do with you. You truly are the best. Cheers to Paul the Plumber. Thank you for coming on the weekend, after hours, and stopping the water leak in my toilet. May you be flushed with success! ~Scrappy-Do.

Cheers to our sister Danyelle and our fabulous neighbor June for rescuing us when we went exploring in Windermere! ~ Lily & Natalie Cheers to the CV Arts Council for bringing Sean Cronin’s Very Good concert to Invermere, and cheers to the community for its support! Jeers to the person who stole a blue bag of dirty bed linens from the pickup truck in Radium the week of July 23rd. Was it worth it to steal dirty sheets with someone’s hair, body fluids and dried skin ground into them? You know who you are, as do we. Jeers to all the irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to run at large in Pothole Park. It’s not a dog park, so put them on a leash! A big jeers to the Albertans who were staying in the condos on Columbia Road in Edgewater during August long weekend. How dare you leave your dog tied to a tree in the blistering sun with no water and a bag of food for your dog to feed itself out of? You’re welcome for bringing your dog a pail of water.

Cheers to Justin at Jaquar Furniture Company and the young man from Rocky Metals who both assisted me with fixing my boat ladder so I could enjoy the lake with my kids during the holidays. I appreciate the speedy complimentary service you both provided to help get us back on the water! ~Janet Cheers to Rod at Home Hardware for allowing us to use one of the store’s tools to fix a machine at RVVR so everyone could use it. You always treat us great! Cheers to Lambert Insurance for being open on Saturday! Thank you, thank you! Cheers to the awesome, Good Samaritans we have in the Columbia Valley. The visitors greatly appreciated your help in our time of need. Thanks. Cheers to Byron and the gang at Bicycle Works in Invermere for being patient and super helpful with our bike!

Cheers to the nice work the landscape company is doing in Castle Rock. The work looks great, but jeers for leaving oil all over the ground where you parked your bobcats! Cheers to Leo for keeping a close watch overt the back of the Thrift Store.

Jeers to the selfish people who park their boat trailers on Tretheway Road all summer, leaving no room for others to park there for a day of boating. Park it in your yard. Any one who feels the same should contact the Highway Department. Cheers to the amazing staff at The Bargain Shop Express for all the gifts and yummy diaper cakes you showered me with. Oh, I am sure growing wonderful. Also, cheers to my mom, dad, brother, sisters, grandparents and family. I will learn to say thanks soon. ~ Yours truly, Baby Logan. Jeers to the mess that is still waiting to be cleaned up on the Fairmont Fire Hall lawn from the recent mudslide. Seems that red tape trumps pride.

August 10, 2012 of Taylor Made golf clubs, and a Calaway driver were stolen — a total estimated value of $2,500. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the local detachment. • On August 7th at 3:27 a.m., Police responded to a non-injury hit-and-run in the 5000 block of Wills Rd, Fairmont, involving three vehicles. A blue 2002 Chevrolet pickup registered to a 20-year-old Cranbrook woman traveled eastbound on Wills Rd. onto Hot Springs Rd. She was exceeding the speed limit and lost control while taking the left turn, striking a utility pole and a parked Oldsmobile, which in turn struck the vehicle parked next to the Oldsmobile, a 2000 Toyota Camry. Registered owners of the latter two vehicles stated the driver had fled. However, the female registered owner returned and fled again prior to police arrival. Both the Chevrolet and Oldsmobile were towed. The woman later came to the detachment to report the incident. She was issued violation tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act for having no insurance and speeding relative to conditions.

FAITH

Awestruck under the night sky By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly Standing under a clear night sky and peering out into the vastness of the universe, Bruce Cockburn’s song “Lord of the Starfields” comes to mind. “Lord of the Starfields, Ancient of Days, Universe Maker, here’s a song in your praise. Wings of the storm cloud, beginning and end, you make my heart leap, like a banner in the wind. O love that fires the sun keep me burning. Lord of the Starfields, sower of life, heaven and earth are full of your light. Voice of the nova, smile of the dew, all of our yearning, only comes home to you. O love that fires the sun keep me burning.” I can’t help myself. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Spontaneous praise for The One above and beyond

all galaxies bubbles up from deep within. What manner of being displays His creative power over 13 billion light years of space, with such faultless precision, balance, proportion, and dazzling beauty? Awestruck under the night sky I hear King David’s words, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” Who am I that He is thinking of me? It’s wonderful but true; The One who set Ursus Major the Great Bear, Orion the Great Hunter, Cassiopeia, and all other constellations in the heavens has fixed His affection upon human beings. Just imagine; the Universe Maker Jesus Christ is intimately aware of all the brokenness, sorrow, grief, guilt and shame each of us carries. And even more astonishing, He loves us and became one of us, died for our sins, and rose from the dead that we might receive a life better than we could ever dream possible. The Lord of the Starfields isn’t remote, He’s near. You’ll find Him if you seek Him with all your heart. Look up and start speaking. He’s out there, and He’s right here, and He’s listening.

Justin Flowers, also from the valley, claimed first place in the speed trial with the fastest time around the track. Photo by Kristian Rasmussen
