Five buildings in an uninhabited condominium block in Fairmont were destroyed in a highly suspicious blaze on the morning of Saturday, December 22nd. “Most definitely we’re suspecting arson,” said Winderemere and Fairmont Hot Springs fire chief Jim Miller, who described the heat from the blaze as “absolutely unbelievable”.

Firefighters received a report of a single building on fire at about 10:30 a.m., he said, and by the time firefighters arrived mere minutes later from the nearby Fairmont fire hall, three buildings were involved in the inferno. All five were quickly incinerated in the fire, but no one was injured.

Youth centre planned for Windermere

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Windermere residents are set to gain a new youth centre and fully renovated community hall, thanks to $60,000 in government grants gained by the Windermere Community Association.

The funding contribution, announced by Western Diversification Canada, will be combined with $30,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust, plus a further $30,000 fundraised by the community association, to fund renovation work needed since the hall flooded in spring 2011.

Along with fixing up the basement, which was the area worst affected by flooding, the non-profit community group will also oversee work to refurbish the ground floor of the building, including new flooring, paint and insulation.

“The main thing is to keep the building upgraded, safe and an appealing place for the community to use,” said Gracie Boake, of the Windermere Community Association.

“We’ll also be trying to do something for the local youth.”

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac Columbia Valley RCMP Really, not me When I worked in the Lower Mainland I visited a fellow I trained with who worked in Coquitlam. I was on days off, unshaven, wearing shorts and running shoes. I also had a T-shirt on with the Serbian Flag — a gift from my father to ensure I remember my roots. This comes into play later. My friend had to escort a patient into Riverview Hospital, a secure psychiatric facility.

The patient arrived, dressed in a suit and clean shaven.

When we got to Riverview my friend went to the front counter to deal with administrative stuff while I sat in the waiting area with this fellow making small talk.

Ten minutes later two huge male orderlies walked up and told me that it was time to go. “What?” I advised them it wasn’t me, but this fellow that they should take. I quickly realized what they were seeing, me dressed as I was and this fellow in a neat suit looking quite proper.

“I’m a police officer, this is the person you want,” I turned to the patient, “right?” He said nothing, enjoying the predicament I’m sure. I decided I was not going down without a fight. I’ve seen movies where people are mistakenly placed in these hospitals and never seen again. My partner got back and confirmed who I was and we started heading out, fast. As we went down the stairs a fellow walking up looked at my T-shirt and asked what it said. “Serbia,” I told him. The response I got was: “Oh, I’m a communist too.” I started walking even faster.

Sitting on a time bomb I remember, once upon a time, long ago, I was trim, slim and athletic. We can also include: pretty stupid. The old saying, “Ignorance is bliss,” suits this story.

Long ago I got a call that a box of old dynamite had been found outdoors. It was a hot summer day.

I arrived at the scene and, sure enough, found 15 sticks of old dynamite in a cardboard box that was sitting in liquid, a sweaty substance from the dynamite. I think some blasting caps were also in the box.

So, I picked the box up, opened the trunk of the police vehicle and figured there was nothing I could really do with them now, so they could stay in the trunk until the end of my shift.

Off I go for about six hours, radio on, and off about my business. When I got back to the office, my first call was to our specialized Explosive Disposal Unit – the bomb squad. I told them what I had, what I did and where I put the dynamite. All I got at the other end was, “You what?” “You did what?” “You put them where?”

They then went on to explain that I was sitting on what can be described as nitroglycerine and any spark

could cause a massive explosion.

The next question they asked, I didn’t really want to answer: “Where is the police car now?”

Of course, it was parked in the underground parking lot of the detachment.

Where else? Duh. The loud thump I heard over the phone was no doubt the guy’s head hitting the desk. I think several times.

Today, they would probably tell me to evacuate the building and they would be on their way. But since I was pretty much a rookie and there was not much invested in me at the time, I was told to get in the car, get it out of the underground lot, not to bump into anything, and park it in a safe, isolated area.

I told my fellow brave officers of the predicament and asked if anyone wanted to go for a ride.

All of a sudden they had places to be other than the office. They were probably all watching from a distance, taking odds. Shortly after this, they sent me on an explosives course. I passed.

Simple arrest in the parking lot I was working alone doing some surveillance on a fellow selling drugs at a local mall parking lot. Once I had seen enough, I went in for the arrest and identified myself as a police officer, arresting him for trafficking.

For some reason he did not believe I was a police officer, so the struggle was on and down to the ground we went.

Meanwhile this guy was yelling, “You’re not a cop!

Help me, somebody help me.” Probably my new perm was confusing him. While I was trying to control the guy and fish out my badge to shove in his face, I realized my badge was not on me.

“Told you, you’re not a cop,” he continued. “Help me, somebody! Call the cops!” Now that I had gained a little more control of the fellow, I opened up my jacket and showed him my gun, explaining, “See here, I have a gun, I’m a police officer.”

Of course now all I could hear from this guy was him yelling at the top of his lungs “AARGH, HE’S GOT A GUN, HE’S GOT A GUN! HELP, CALL THE COPS!” All I was thinking was, please, someone call the cops so the cavalry can come to the rescue.”

I had a bad habit of not carrying a portable radio on me. People obviously witnessed this and the lights and siren show was on. Somebody probably reported that some guy looking like Charles Manson was beating up on someone and he had a gun.

Anyways, the boys came to the rescue and they realized it was me. The guy was yelling to the officers, “HE’S GOT A GUN, HE’S GOT A GUN.” I looked over at my fellow officers and friends and asked them, “Will you tell this guy who I am?”

Of course what I got back was, “And who might that be, sir?”

No second deer cull on the way for Invermere

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Invermere council will not seek a second deer cull until the results of the lawsuit against the municipality are known and the public have been further consulted, mayor Gerry Taft has stated.

With a lawsuit looming in late January and no further solutions put forward by the province for management of Invermere’s urban deer population, the District of Invermere has no current plans for further action to control the number of deer in town, he added.

“There is definitely no desire to apply for any cull permits or take any action pre-lawsuit,” Mayor Taft said.

“The outcome of the lawsuit dictates how we will proceed with deer management afterwards.”

Devin Kazakoff, president of the Invermere Deer Protection Society, which is suing the district, confirmed the group will be moving ahead with their trial against the District of Invermere. The court date is set for January 30th and the group is seeking public donations to help fund their legal action.

“We’re setting out to dismiss the bylaw put in place in August 2011 to reduce deer numbers in town to 50,” Mr. Kazakoff said. “We challenge how [council] came to the conclusion that we need to reduce their population.”

The group, established in January 2012 in reaction to the planned 100-animal deer cull, is also seeking to have recommendations adopted by council from Invermere’s Urban Deer Advisory Committee thrown out by a judge. These recommendations included a trap and cull program, relocation of deer during spring 2012, and an ultimate goal of reducing the urban deer population in Invermere to 50 deer by 2014.

“A lot of residents love the deer and want to see them protected,” Mr. Kazakoff said.

If animals must be removed from the community, his group proposes non-lethal solutions, including relocation and driving the animals out of town with trained dogs. Neither solution is currently permitted by the province of British Columbia.

The news the lawsuit will continue comes shortly after a volunteer group concluded the third deer count of the year to establish population figures. The number of

INVERDEER — Invermere’s mule deer population numbers will stay steady until the results of the lawsuit against the municipality are known.

The discrepancy in numbers from the final count was likely due to poor weather, said Stan Markham, a member of the Urban Deer Advisory Committee involved in the count.

“We did three counts on consecutive Saturdays in November,” he added. “The figures were pretty much what we were expecting ... The method of counting we use fairly accurately ensures no animals are counted twice.”

The numbers will be used to determine the biological and cultural carrying capacity of deer in Invermere, Mr. Markham explained.

The biological carrying capacity is the maximum deer population that the environment within the District of Invermere can sustain indefinitely. The cultural carrying capacity is the maximum number of animals the human population will tolerate — a point of some debate between the municipality and the group bringing the lawsuit against them.

Historical Lens

No end in sight

The proposed Mayan calendar-inspired apocalypse has landed with a thud, allowing you, dear reader, to look forward to another great year of Pioneer reads, leads and misdeeds.

As an editorial team, we looked back on all that 2012 had to offer — the good, the bad, and the downright hilarious. (This being the upper Columbia Valley, “ugly” really doesn’t apply.)

The year offered excitement, adventure, heartbreak and triumph, and big changes for the valley. Chief among the news developments was the approval of a mountain resort municipality for Jumbo Glacier, one of the last hurdles towards building the world-class ski resort — as long as funders come forward. Fairmont Hot Springs recovered within months from what initially looked to be a devastating mudslide, as heavy rains in June wreaked wet havoc on waterways around the valley.

Radium Hot Springs is still riding high from the October re-start of the re-tooled Canfor sawmill and planer, as many signs point towards a healthy forestry industry in the East Kootenays.

The year saw its share of unusual incidents, many involving the animal kingdom. Of course, there was the ever-present deer issue, and the attendant legal battles over whether or not to carry out a cull. A chihuahua was almost eaten by an owl, while an Invermere motorist was surprised to see a cougar and bighorn sheep locked in mid-air mortal combat before landing beside her on Highway 93. (The sheep was badly injured, while the cougar casually walked away.)

A man intoxicated on drugs tried a long jump into the Radium Hot Springs pool (and missed), while an Invermere auto worker learned he made a great lightning rod when he was zapped by a bolt.

This is but a small sampling of the year that was, covered in depth further in this newspaper. We hope you enjoy our look back on 2012, and we wish all residents, visitors and fans of the Columbia Valley nothing but the best in the coming Year of the Snake, otherwise known as 2013.

Legion needs support Dear Editor: With November 11th just past and a new year almost upon us, I would like to thank all the businesses and individuals for their attendance and support for both the Remembrance Day parade as well as contributions to our poppy campaign.

This year we had a very successful poppy campaign and our afternoon cenotaph service was well attended. The people in this valley are what make these events such a success. Their generous donations and those who attended the ceremonies, showing their respect to our fallen comrades, our living veterans and those still serving today, are very important and greatly appreciated.

The money raised through the poppy campaign does not stay within the Legion.

All monies generated go directly back to the community by assisting veterans and their families, helping the needy, bursaries to children of veterans, assisting Fire

Departments and health organizations within our poppy district (Dry Gulch to Spillimacheen).

Word from the Web I just finished searching for the Radium Hot Springs Lodge and am finding it now to be demolished. It is a sad day and I for one do not feel that this decision is the right one.

When I wanted to see the Bighorn sheep, all I had to do was step out from the lodge when I stayed there a number of times in the past to see them.

Parks Canada has found a scapegoat so to speak in tearing this majestic building down. I for one will miss it, as

I was looking forward to staying there this 2012 Christmas season as part of my getaway. It’s disappointing — it was a quiet, restful place for a peaceful break. If there are any ideas of someone rallying to keep it open, I would be interested in hearing about it.

Radium’s Dragonfly Discovery Centre Montessori school is poised to take off on January 14th, with 10 spots opening up for children age three to six, who are eager to learn about the world around them.

“Basically we are giving them the freedom to explore, to build their independence, and to discover their own interests,” said Dragonfly Discovery Centre founder Charlotte Streicek. “You are essentially holding yourself back if you are not given the freedom and opportunity to move, choose and be creative.”

Changing of the guard at Mercer & Company Invermere’s Mercer & Co. is in new hands after owner Leanne Tegart sold the business to concentrate on her new venture, Arrowhead Brewing Company. Exactly five years to the day since Leanne began running the custom framing and lighting store, she is passing it over to Invermere’s Jennifer Swan.

After a successful half-decade with just Mercer & Co., Leanne found herself stretched thin between running her store and the new brewery business, which she co-owns with partner Shawn Tegart.

“I wouldn’t ever have sold without the brewery doing so well,” she said. “For the new year it’s all about the brewery. We’ve had a busy first two months and have been very happy with the local support.”

Movie Review: Resident Evil: Retribution Reviewed by Greg Amos In this, the sixth installment of the Resident Evil movie franchise, we see the return of Alice (played

by Milla Jovovich) battling once again against the Umbrella Corporation, whose T-virus has transformed the world population into flesh-eating zombie armies (are there any other kind?).

Alice is taken hostage by the corporation and awakens in their secret lair where she is interrogated by a former colleague subjugated through a red scarab device controlled

by The Red Queen, an anti-humanity super computer.

Based loosely on Capcom’s apocalyptic survival video game (and my first marriage), director Paul W. S. Anderson has created a style-over-substance extravaganza aimed more at highlighting his wife (Jovovich) in bodyhugging leather than developing the character interactions

that made the video game a huge commercial success.

Some movies that rely on minimalist one-liners as character dialogue can engage the audience: in this movie the engagement will likely end in divorce.

But if it’s action you want, Anderson has generously provided more than enough zombies, hybrids, inbreds, whole-wheat breds and gargantuan genetic mutations (eerily similar to the original DOOM video game) to annihilate the inner pacifist in all of us. Cue the chase scene!

But wait! A rescue crew is infiltrating the ultra-secret corporation headquarters submerged off the coast of Kamchatka where Alice is being held (how did they know where to find it?). Fans of the franchise (if such people exist) will note the return of many favourite characters from the first five films as part of this crew.

They need to fight their way through simulated in-

fected zombie-filled major cities (reminiscent of the holodecks in Star Trek) to finally reunite with our heroine, who holds the key to a powerful weapon. Cue the plot twist!

While never a fan of the Resident Evil movie series, I was left wanting in terms of character development and the holes in the plot loom larger than those that Alice punched through zombie brains with a myriad of highpowered weapons endlessly at her disposal.

But if you are going through zombie withdrawal until AMC’s zombie drama television series The Walking Dead returns in February, then this is the poison you should choose.

Curling club gets provincial funds

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Local curlers will be hurrying harder thanks to brand new brooms and equipment at the Invermere Curling Club, purchased with a $2,000 provincial grant.

The new equipment includes shoe grippers, curling brooms and sticks to enable seniors and those with limited mobility to push rocks along the ice with ease.

The funds to buy the new gear came from the provincial government’s Local Sport Program Development Fund.

“The health benefits of participation in sport can’t be overstated,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “It’s our goal to encourage active lifestyles for all British Columbians.

Through the Local Sport Program Development fund, thousands of athletes, young and old, have the opportunity to participate in sport programs of all sorts.”

The curling club first heard about the money through Curl BC, explained Dave Gaspar, who coaches the club’s junior curlers. Mr. Gaspar was originally looking to raise around $4,000 in funding, which would have also allowed the club to purchase new curling shoes for members and visitors to use.

Instead he applied for the maximum $2,000 available from the development fund, and is carrying out alternate fundraising and seeking sponsors to help raise the rest.

“It felt very good to learn we got the funding,” he said. “Our other equipment was becoming out of date, so it’s good to have the new technology.”

While Mr. Gaspar heard back more than a month and a half ago that the club had got the cash, he could not go public with the announcement until given the go ahead by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Although the money was earmarked to benefit the club’s 40 junior curlers, all members are enjoying the 32 news brooms, 40 grippers or anti-sliders and eight delivery sticks, he added.

“The equipment, although purchased for our junior curlers, is quite frequently being used by beginners at our drop-in sessions, and the seniors are using the sticks, so everyone is benefiting from this.”

Banff Film Fest stopping by town

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The Banff Film Festival tour is heading for Invermere at the start of January, offering an evening of short films ranging from environmental pieces to adventure treks.

The two-hour cinematic event will be hosted on Sunday, January 6th by Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club and is the organization’s main fundraiser for the year. The cinematic evening, at Invermere Community Hall, will feature two hours of film pieces, from four-minute shorts to longer features, selected for the local audience.

“We always have a hard time choosing because we want to please everyone,” said Heather Lang, one of the event coordinators. “There’s always one feature film ... we will try to choose something that has received some recognition, such as a best of festival award.”

The triple-award winning documentary Crossing the Ice is a hot contender to be included in the Invermere lineup of films, she divulged. The documentary follows a pair of Australians who make an unsupported trek from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back.

Selecting a great two hours of film depends on blending action, adventure, thought-provoking pieces, humour and culture, Ms. Lang explained. Typically the night features 10 to 15 films, so there is usually something for all ages and interests, she added.

“We try to look at what people like to do in our area:

people love to mountain bike, ski, climb and kayak, so we try to cover each type of activity. We always try to put some human interest pieces in there, not just adrenaline.”

Having a piece of such a big international film festival coming to the Columbia Valley is of real benefit to local people, Ms. Lang said.

“Some of the best filmmakers, photographers, climbers and paragliders in the world are involved in making these documentaries and films,” she explained. “We have the opportunity to screen the best of the Banff Film Festival right here in our own community. Why wouldn’t you say yes?”

This will be the 18th year that the film fest has been hosted in the Columbia Valley. The event started out up at Panorama Mountain Village and has grown in size since Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club took over the organization and relocated the screening to the community hall.

The money the evening raises helps to fund the snow clearing and track setting for the Lake Windermere Whiteway, as well as being used for the purchase of new ski equipment for the nordic ski club’s youth programs.

For 2012, the number of tickets on sale will be reduced to 220, to accommodate new safety regulations at the Invermere Community Hall. The ticket price will also rise slightly this year, to $25 per person. Attendees can buy pizza and alcoholic and soft drinks or popcorn by donation.

Tickets can be bought from Crazy Soles, Inside Edge, Kicking Horse Cafe and Lusti’s Mountain Outfitters at Panorama. Doors open at 5 p.m. Films start at 6 p.m.

Store running from winter blues

Aspiring athletes looking to avoid the couch will have a support group in their struggle against the winter woes this January.

Invermere’s Crazy Soles running and yoga store is preparing to debut Joguary, a month-long event challenging joggers, walkers or nordic skiers to travel at least one mile (1.6 kilometres) per day.

“A mile is easy, and it has been very entertaining hearing what people are doing to get their mile in,” said Beva Kirk, co-owner of Crazy Soles. “Some people get trapped in an airport and are tracking a mile through the terminal.”

Inspired by a similar challenge offered by Calgary’s Strides Running Store, which through the month of December, puts on a Strides December Run Streak, the ultimate goal for Joguary is to add up enough miles to stretch across Canada by the end of January. If the store wants to reach their goal, motivation will be key throughout

the month, Mrs. Kirk added.

“It is usually that time of year where you are not so motivated because it is cold,” she said. “A lot of people here downhill ski, but that doesn’t keep you that physically fit. It takes 21 days to make a habit. There are 30 to 31 days in a month, so it could become a habit.”

Like any habit-forming activity, Joguary does come with some risks.

The cold climate and icy conditions can wreak havoc on even the most experienced runner, but there are solutions, Beva added.

“Traction is always essential and so is lighting, especially if you are going to be running outside of daylight. If it is -10 C and below, you want to heat the air before it goes in, so it’s better to wear a face mask.”

The group already has 44 runners signed up for the event and will need 161 to run across Canada, Beva added.

To participate in the Crazy Soles Joguary event, athletes are asked to log their times via the store’s Facebook page, which can be found by searching for a group called “Crazy Soles” on the website.

Financial mistakes young people make Transitioning from adolescence into adulthood is a major step in one’s life. Since there is no manual for successfully becoming a responsible adult, many young people can feel under-prepared for the challenge. Here are a few common financial mistakes young people tend to make, and ideas to help remedy them.

Failing to budget The most important financial habit a young person can develop is creating and following a realistic budget.

Understanding how much life costs and how money is being spent is the backbone of leading a fiscally responsible life. For help with building a budget, resources can be found online or from a financial advisor.

Taking on too large of a mortgage A person’s home is their castle. However, the home doesn’t have to be a castle to feel like one. When selecting a home to purchase and the size of mortgage, consider what payment amount you can reasonably afford rather than the amount that you qualify for. Ultimately, just because you feel you should be able to pay an amount, doesn’t mean you can realistically afford it.

Another factor to consider is the effect of interest rates on mortgage payments. Since interest rates in Canada are at historical lows, it’s important to understand that if a mortgage seems expensive now, it will likely seem really expensive when interest rates inevitably move upwards.

Overusing credit Credit cards are not magic money. Every time a person spends money on credit and does not pay the bill in full before the interest-free grace period expires, they are effectively spending income they have not yet earned, and racking up interest charges often in the neighborhood of 20 per cent annually.

If a person must use credit to get through a difficult time, they should avoid late payments, and always pay more than the minimum. It doesn’t take much to negatively influence one’s credit rating, which can affect a person’s future ability to buy a home, obtain additional credit or even be hired for certain jobs.

Not saving While it’s important to enjoy the fruits of one’s labor, it’s important also to develop a habit of saving money. Retirement and emergency savings are two types of savings strategies everyone should have.

To ensure saving does happen, take a cue from The Wealthy Barber and pay yourself first. This refers to setting aside a percentage of every dollar earned for longterm savings. Most experts recommend 10 per cent to start. For instance, if a person earns $1,000, they should transfer $100 to a savings account.

Using a tax-free savings account for this purpose is a good idea. This gives a person the chance to get used to saving and provides flexibility if unexpected expenses

come up. Once about three to six months’ worth of income has been built up, they should consider transferring some of the funds to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan and keeping the rest as an emergency fund.

Compulsive spending Many people spend small amounts of money all day long, and rarely account for it. Things like coffee, snacks and ATM fees may seem trivial on an individual basis, but can amount to a lot of money over time. Consider that if a person trimmed $5 of compulsive spending each day, they could save $1,825 over the course of a year. The old saying “watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves” is a valuable lesson for the compulsive spender.

Good deals Becoming a savvy shopper is an important skill, and one that every young person should develop as early as possible. However, buying something on credit because it’s a “good deal” can be a slippery slope. Remember that when a person gets into debt, everything costs more because of interest charges. Suddenly the deal might not seem so great.

Final thoughts Learning to be mindful of one’s finances is a process.

It takes time, trial and error to learn to do so proficiently.

Most important is a concerted effort to try and to ask for assistance from family or a financial professional if needed.

Projects loom for Canal Flats

By Greg Amos Pioneer Staff Canal Flats’ operational budget is slated to be $1.57 million in 2013 — about half of Radium Hot Springs’ operational budget of $2.7 million, and a fraction of the $7.2 million being spent by Invermere next year.

But it’s the capital spending of $5.3 million that will highlight the village’s 2013 spending.

“It’s a huge undertaking for all the capital projects, which we completed all the legwork for last year,” said chief administrative officer Brian Woodward.

The biggest component of that is $2.7 million slated to be spent on water infrastructure, including a tentative plan to spend $1.64 million on a new water reservoir for the Eagle’s Nest development. Depending on an upcoming council decision, the plan could change to building two separate reservoirs, made either of concrete or steel. Either way, the work is needed to ensure Canal Flats can meet fire flow standards, said Mr. Woodward.

A sewer line upgrade for the village and sewage lagoon liner desludging will also consume $584,000, though a federal Gas Tax fund is expected to cover $540,000 of the total, with word back expected in January.

New cement slab floors, new bleachers, insulation and rink upgrades at the Canal Flats Arena will cost $1.35 million, but $800,000 is being covered through the province’s Community Recreation Program, $100,000 in a regional district recreation reservoir fund, and $50,000 through a Columbia Basin Trust fund. The work will begin in spring 2013.

That leaves $355,000 for taxpayers to cover, with the . . . ‘Deer’ continued from page 5 Members of the Invermere Deer Protection Society were invited along to observe the final count on November 24th. In the past, the group has publicly criticized the method of conducting the count and the necessity behind it.

“We don’t agree that counting the deer is necessarily the way to go,” Mr. Kazakoff said. “They don’t have an objective as to why they are doing the count.

“We also question the methods of counting: it’s not accurate at all.”

The deer count was carried out by a total of 38 volunteers, who were paired up and each given one of seven areas of town to survey deer numbers in.

The Wilder subdivision was found to have the largest numbers of mule deer, with the only whitetail deer spotted in CastleRock Estates and Athalmer.

Volunteers drove every street and alley in Invermere over a two-hour period, counting by foot in areas inaccessible by vehicle, and noted down the species, gender and age of animals spotted. But the deer protection society president argues that counting by vehicle does not produce accurate results.

Mr. Markham agrees that the counters will not see each and every animal, as participants do not en-

Fire Hall exterior upgrades and a new First Responder truck will cost the village $250,000, while $92,000 will be spent on road upgrades and paving.

Among the large projects being completed are the Columbia Discovery Centre, which will house both the Canal Flats municipal office and a Ktunaxa Nation interpretive centre, and will cost $102,000 from the 2013 budget. It’s slated to be complete in the spring, after spending three years under construction.

Tilly Memorial Park on Columbia Lake will benefit from $15,000 spent to upgrade picnic tables. A two-kilometre pathway from the village to the park will cost $160,000, all of which will be covered if a provincial grant comes through, said Mr. Woodward.

Overall, the village’s budget contemplates a five per cent tax increase, though Mr. Woodward cautioned that as of December, the village’s budget is still at the preliminary stage, yet to be subject to cuts by council. Canal Flats taxpayers also pay regional district, school board and other taxes, and can expect to see a composite, across-the-board tax increase of 2.5 per cent based on the current budget.

That translates into roughly $60 to $100 more for the average Canal Flats property owner, though home values in the village range greatly, from $200,000 to more than $1 million, said Mr. Woodward.

The village is comprised almost entirely of residential properties, with a few commercial assessments along with some heavy and light industry assessments for the Canfor sawmill. In all, Canfor alone is set to pick up about $64,000 of the village’s tax tab. ter backyards or crawl down into gullies to check for animals there, but said that this only serves to slightly underestimate numbers of deer in town.

“You can be relatively certain that we never overcount; there are always more deer than we see on the days of the count,” he said. “When counting the borders of each area, the groups walk the boundary together. It makes the possibility of counting animals twice very minimal.”

The Invermere Deer Protection Society, which claims on its website to speak for “the people of Invermere” is vehemently opposed to the killing of any deer and has publicly criticized Invermere’s mayor and council for what they say was inadequate public consultation before the original deer cull took place.

Mayor Taft counters that when the public were consulted via survey in January 2011, little negative feedback was received from the community, indicating that the protection group may not speak for the majority of residents.

“Going forward, a public survey or referendum is key because this is such a heated topic,” he said. “I think the direction has to come from residents, then the responsibility for decisions is one shared by the whole community.”

Icy plunges The start of 2012 saw a trio of falls through thin ice on Lake Windermere when locals Don Steedman, Jordie Kirk and Robert Madsen all plunged into the chilly waters. While the first two were uninjured but startled, Mr. Madsen suffered a shattered femur when his leg punched through shifting ice as he returned from a fishing trip.

December 28, 2012 Employment centre saved The local employment centre, which was in danger of blinking out of existence, was saved at the end of March by a collaboration between the Family Resource Centre and Canadian Mental Health Association. The organizations took over the running of the centre when it was at threat of being closed in province-wide employment service changes.

Big bucks received for Canal Flats arena When the provincial government pledged $800,000 in funding for the upgrades of the Canal Flats arena at the end of March, council and residents cheered the cash injection, which allowed the $1 million project to move ahead.

Deer cull begins After the Invermere Deer Protection Organization lost a court battle to have an injunction against the District of Invermere extended, the municipality’s much-debated deer cull began on February 25th. After some tampering with traps and suspected interference from those opposing the cull, a total of just 19 animals were trapped and killed as part of the program, which originally had been intended to euthanize 100 deer.

In March, two members of the deer protection organization had charges recommended against them by local police after harassing the contractor hired to carry out the cull.

March Teachers on strike Columbia Valley teachers and educators across the province walked off the job on March 5th, leaving behind empty classrooms. The three-day walkout was part of an ongoing contract dispute between the Ministry of Education and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. In April, teachers pulled out of involvement in voluntary duties outside work hours including school sports, clubs, activities and graduation ceremonies.

Dog escapes being devoured by owl A tiny miniature Chihuahua named Roxy narrowly escaped becoming an owl’s dinner on March 7th, when the large bird swooped down and attempted to carry her away from her owners’ backyard. Fortunately the bird dropped Roxie and her owners intervened before she was seriously harmed.

Jumbo Glacier Resort approved On March 20th, the provincial government made a Jumbo announcement that the paperwork permitting the mountain resort had been signed, allowing the project to move ahead. The proposal to build the $450 million resort, 55 kilometres west of Invermere, was submitted to the government in 1991, and spent 20 years tied up in ministry project reviews. The announcement met with vehement resistance from anti-Jumbo protestors, who took to the streets in April for a rally against the resort’s construction.

Catamount and North Star Glaciers in the Upper Forster Creek drainage are closed annually to recreational snowmobile use. This closure is pursuant to Section 58 (1) (b) of the Forest and Range Practices Act.

UNDER REVIEW

The Province is currently reviewing the existing closures on the Catamount and North Star Glaciers in consultation with local stakeholder groups. The existing Section 58 order will remain in effect until otherwise notified.

Enforcement patrols will focus on non-compliance.

Any forthcoming amendments to the closure area would be on a trial basis.

December 28, 2012 Mudslide sweeps through Fairmont On July 15th, a churning mass of mud, boulders and torn-up trees flooded through Fairmont Hot Springs, causing millions of dollars in damage and stranding 600 campers. The mudslide, caused by the bursting of a natural dam formed in a narrow section of Fairmont Creek above Fairmont Resort, washed out the road connecting the lodge to its RV park.

Conservation of Lot 48 celebrated An untouched piece of nature on the eastern side of Columbia Lake received protection from development thanks to the efforts of the Nature Conservancy of Canada and partners. Lot 48, which is of deep spiritual significance to the local Ktunaxa Nation and considered to be ecologically sensitive, was purchased by the Nature Conservancy for $7.2 million.

The July 15th Fairmont Hot Springs mudslide, which swept past the resort, across Mountainside Golf Course and through the neighbourhoods beside Fairmont Creek, caused millions of dollars worth of damage. . . . ‘Year In Review’ continued from page 21

April Manslaughter in Invermere Cory Jarock, a 31-year-old house painter living in Invermere, was found dead on the driveway of a 5th Avenue home on April 3rd. An investigation into Mr. Jarock’s death led to charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, assault and robbery, all in relation to the death, being laid against Brian Panebianco, 23, also from Invermere. Mr. Panebianco’s trial will be moving ahead in the new year.

Rick Hansen Relay visit The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay passed through the valley on April 13th, with many local difference makers involved in carrying the famous relay medal. Kate Gibbs, one of the Invermere medal bearers, entered Pothole Park to rapturous applause from crowds of more than 200 supporters as the evening celebrations got underway.

May Radium sawmill reopening announced Eager workers and the community of Radium Hot Springs received early Christmas presents when it was announced that Canfor would reopen its Radium sawmill with a $38.5 million upgrade to improve efficiency.

The mill was officially reopened on October 29th.

Radium Hot Springs pools to go private Parks Canada announced plans to sell all three Canadian Rockies hot pools in Radium, Banff and Miette Hot Springs to private operators. At the Radium pools 20 out of 42 employees learned that they would be affected by the move at some point in the new year.

Deer protection group wins right to lawsuit The Invermere Deer Protection Society received legal consent to sue the District of Invermere for damages relating to the February deer cull in B.C. Supreme Court.

The presiding judge dismissed the District of Invermere’s counter-suit to recover funds spent on the legal case.

June Jumbo decision left to province On June 8th, the Regional District of East Kootenay voted to uphold a 2009 decision turning over land use and planning decisions regarding Jumbo Glacier Resort to the province. A motion to recant the board’s previous position was defeated by a vote of 8-7; the same tally as in 2009.

Campground declares state of emergency Windermere’s Shadybrook Campground & Resort was showered with a deluge of icy sediment-filled water, which spilled over from Windermere Creek and flooded trailers, patios and cut off water and sewer services to 20 sites.

Castle Rock crumbles under heavy rains A heavy deluge showered down more than raindrops as the retaining wall supporting the entrance roadway to Castle Rock Estates broke apart on June 26th. Massive boulders crumbled towards Westside Road below, spurring a large-scale cleanup by the District of Invermere.

August Local theatre fights on despite digital switch Invermere’s Toby Theatre learned that their 60-year history of screening analog films will soon come to an end. Many Hollywood studios announced that they will no longer be producing films on reels, meaning vintage theatres like the Toby will have to purchase hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of new projection system.

Invermere Rowing Club gets adaptive Valley local Jill Unger learned to glide through the waters of Lake Windermere as gracefully as she negotiates life. Ms. Unger, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, was given the chance to skim Windermere’s waters in a brand new $7,500 adaptive rowing boat.

Windermere cyclist represents Canada at Paralympics Jaye Milley put his training to the test and represented the Columbia Valley and Canada in the road and track cycling categories of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Mr. Milley, 21, was born without properly formed hands and feet, but trained himself to race a specially modified bike.

Invermere helipad reopens The Invermere & District Hospital’s helipad reopened on September 13th after renovations were completed to bring it up to Transport Canada standards. The $300,000 project required the helipad to be relocated and increased in size, with new lighting and height restriction poles installed.

Thief nabs District of Invermere truck A bold thief stole a District of Invermere truck while workers laboured less than 100 metres away at Kinsmen Beach on July 9th. A worker’s purse and several other valuable items were in the vehicle at the time.

Nanofibre closes up for good Nanofibre Networks, a local valley business offering Internet services, closed up shop for good at the end of September, after selling its assets to Shaw. Since its inception in 2007 the company had been losing money, explained Paul Partlo, chief financial officer.

Four bears shot Two adult bears and two cubs were shot and killed by conservation officers near Invermere after a home invasion and multiple close encounters, including a 300-pound bear lurking near Eileen Madson Primary school.

Rollbots take derby crown Invermere’s Killer Rollbots rolled to a championship finish in the inaugural season of the East Kootenay Roller Derby League, defeating Fernie’s Avalanche City Rollergirls on September 15th.

October Rockies coaching switch-up Coach Marc Ward abruptly left his position with the Columbia Valley Rockies hockey team on September 25th, clearing the way for Ross Bidinger to take over as coach, along with a trio of Dubielewicz brothers.

Canfor sawmill reopens Canfor’s Radium sawmill and planer reopened in mid-October to great relief from Radium Hot Springs residents and former mill workers, some of whom had been out of a job for nearly three years. More than 80 per cent of the unionized employees returned to work at the modernized site, where $38.5 million worth of upgrades had been carried out.

Flying rock causes fatality An unusual accident claimed the life of a 37-year-old Calgary mother, who was killed by a rock flying through the windshield of a car near Canal Flats. An investigation is still

ongoing, though the rock appears to have flown from between the tire treads of a low bed trailer truck. The woman was later named as Janice Cairns. Her husband and two children were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Dismembered deer in Invermere A deer-poaching spree near Kpokl Road in Invermere meant five separate callouts for conservation officers between October 2nd and 12th, as local deer were found with grievous injuries and had to be put down.

The crackle of electricity A new 230-kilovolt, $114-million BC Hydro power line was energized on October 23rd, ensuring a more reliable power supply between Invermere and Golden.

November Huge water leak fixed A major water leak that had been spewing up to 10 litres per second of drinking water into the ground beneath a road in Invermere’s Wilder subdivision was found and fixed, after it was revealed a four-inch cap on section of pipe was missing.

Fraudster sentenced to house arrest A Calgary man was sentenced to 24 months of house arrest after being found guilty of fraud related to the Spirits Reach development near Canal Flats. John Groothius still owes a share of the $2.86 million awarded in a civil suit to the developers.

Veterans remembered Edgewater, Invermere and Canal Flats remembered local veterans with well-attended Remembrance Day services in all three communities.

Jumbo Mountain Resort Municipality approved A mountain resort municipality was given the goahead for Jumbo Glacier Resort on November 19th,

prompting a mixed outpouring of support and opposition for the ski resort project. An initially appointed council was named for the 5,925-hectare, zero-population community, located near Jumbo Mountain, 55 kilometres west of Invermere.

Huge donation to community foundation A donation of more than $2 million from the estate of Canal Flats’ Arnold Ellis created a huge endowment for the Columbia Valley Community Foundation, and bolstered a broad post-secondary scholarship fund for David Thompson Secondary students.

Thrift shop targeted The Invermere Thrift Shop was targeted twice within 10 days by thieves looking to get an even better deal on used merchandise. Three young adults were caught in the act by a security camera at the store.

Kicking Horse Coffee partners with U.S. company Kicking Horse Coffee took on a U.S.-based private equity partner in a multi-million dollar deal that will expand the reach of Invermere’s biggest business success story to south of the border and into Quebec.

December Regional district speaks out against resort municipality The Regional District of East Kootenay made its displeasure known over the province’s decision to allow a non-elected director to have a vote at the regional table.

The board passed a motion to send a letter of complaint to Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett.

Tragic accident claims Radium woman’s life Shirley Dian Hudson, of Radium, sadly passed away on December 12th after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 93/95 just north of Invermere. Icy road conditions are being investigated by the RCMP as a possible cause for the accident.

The reopening of Radium’s Canfor sawmill in mid-October was cause for much celebration from former workers, 80 per cent of whom regained their jobs. The mill was closed for almost three-and-a--half years.

The ultimate end of Oscar Wilde

By Andrew Watt Pioneer Columnist On a cold November morning, abandoned by society except for a small band of constant friends, Oscar Wilde lay waiting for death’s final rattle. At the age of 46, the once admired literary giant was now in Paris, penniless, in exile and broken.

Regardless of this terrible state, after serving two years of prison “for a love that dare not speak it’s name�, Wilde still managed to express his now legendary wit. Of his cheap hotel room where he was bedridden for weeks, he remarked: “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us surely has to go.�

Wilde, born in Westland Row, Dublin, in 1854, had much more than wallpaper and poverty to reflect upon.

Throughout his prolific career as playwright and storyteller, tragedy followed him as closely as a shadow.

He triumphed often and when he did it was always accompanied with controversy. He took delight in defending himself against the constant criticism of his style, both personal and literary, once noting that “true friends stab you in the front.�

Our Irish hero knew all too well that those closest to you can hurt you the most, and toward the end he believed that his mother alone held him gently, with perpetual affection.

Wilde’s relationships with his wife and children were turbulent. As for the remaining characters in his life, many had to be forgiving and all he noted were “at times, painfully correct in scolding me.�

Wilde fought his battles with words. He attacked his vengeful critics with venom and saw society’s entitled as abnormally intolerant. A flamboyant and imposing man, he found conflict with terrible frequency and yet continued to challenge the era’s lack of imagination with his brilliant prose. He was not always in “a position of opposition� with his fellow man, and often revealed his deep sensitivity and vulnerability.

Wilde had met a sympathetic prison warder named Thomas Martin during his final months of incarceration.

On the day of his release, three children were being sent away for snaring rabbits on private property. They could not afford to pay the fine. Wilde broke down upon seeing this and cried

out into the hardened crowd, begging for help on the matter.

Martin, being equally distraught, later slipped the smallest of the children a dry biscuit (and for that was promptly fired). This, and other memories of prison life destroyed Oscar Wilde. Shortly after his freedom was gained, the man rapidly deteriorated, transformed into a vessel that held only misery.

Wilde died poor in 1900 with only faint recognition. At the time, his unique contributions to the world of art were discarded by the very public he tried to enchant with his mind. Yet fortunately for us, his creativity and talent for words remain, validated by time, to be admired and to be taken off the shelves of thought for generations to come.

The meetings begin at 9:00am in the RDEK Board Room at the Cranbrook RDEK office. Committee Meetings are held the Thursday immediately before Board. Both the Committee Meetings and Board Meetings are open to the public. Agendas can be viewed a week prior to the Board Meeting on our website www.rdek.bc.ca.

Recycling Basics Wrapping Paper - all paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in the yellow bins or Invermere’s blue bag program. Foil based papers cannot be recycled and should be thrown in the garbage if they can’t be saved and reused. Please consider paper based paper when purchasing gift wrap.

Ribbons & Bows - cannot be recycled. They can be reused or put in the garbage.

Aluminum Pie Plates & Roasters - cannot be recycled. They can be rinsed and reused. If they are not longer usable, they go in the garbage.

Cardboard Boxes - all cardboard and boxboard (like cracker and cereal boxes) are recyclable. Please flatten them to conserve space in the bin or blue bag.

Tin Cans - all tin food and beverage cans can be recycled. They must be rinsed out. Labels can be left on if they are difficult to remove.

Styrofoam - Even though Styrofoam is marked with a #6, it is NOT recyclable in our program. It should go in the garbage if it can’t be reused.

Plastics - all plastics with the triangular recycling symbol and number between 1 and 6 (except Styrofoam) can be recycled in the yellow bins or Invermere’s blue bag program. They must be clean and every piece of plastic must be numbered. Lids often are a different type of plastic, and if there is no number on the item, it goes in the garbage if it can’t be reused.

Plastics Not Accepted: • #7 plastics, dirty plastics, plastics with no number. They go in the garbage if they can’t be reused.

Batteries One of the items people seem to stock up on at this time of year is batteries. Both alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable.

The drop off location in the Columbia Valley is: Selkirk TV & Appliance, Invermere

Glass Recycling Glass goes in the yellow bins marked GLASS ONLY. The ONLY glass accepted for recycling is container glass.

That means jam jars, salsa jars, wine bottles, olive oil bottles, etc.

NO other glass (including dishes or drinking glasses) is accepted. If in doubt, please leave it out.

Glass bins are located at the Columbia Valley Landfill, Edgewater Post Office, Fairmont Transfer Station, Invermere Industrial Park, Invemere Bottle Depot, and Radium Liquor Store

Not a day goes by that you‛re ever forgotten.

Julien was a brother, a son, best friend and loved by everyone. We miss the way he hugged, laughed and played. The funny jokes he told and his big dimply smile. The way he took toys to school instead of books and his pack would be full. How he would doodle and colour comics “Super Julien” on his school work. At home he would sneak candies and cookies under the kitchen table or took them to bed with him. We would have family movie night and he would squeeze right in between his brother and sister to get the best seat in the house or all three of them would climb onto their mom like a jungle gym and all lie there and laugh at the silly movies we watched.

Julien was very carring and loving to everone around him.

He will always and forever be in our hearts.

Recipe Of The Week PEANUT BRITTLE

1 cup Sugar 1 teaspoon Margarine/Butter ½ cup Lily White Corn Syrup 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1½ cups Salted Peanuts 1 teaspoon Baking Soda Combine sugar and corn syrup in Pyrex bowl (microwave safe!) and microwave on high for 4 minutes.

Add salted peanuts and stir quickly.

Microwave on high for 4 minutes again.

Add margarine/butter and vanilla extract and stir quickly.

Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

Add baking soda and stir quickly.

Looking back through the year of news stories, one thing is very clear: the Columbia Valley is full of talented people, exciting and sometimes controversial news stories, and some unusual happenings. The following is merely a small selection of the memorable news events from the Columbia Valley in 2012.

• Invermere’s Jaye Milley and part-time Radium resident Morgan Bird savoured the Paralympic experience at the London 2012 Games.

Jaye, who was born with underdeveloped arms and legs, trained hard to compete in the time trials and road race cycling events, while Bird, who has cerebral palsy, swam to a fourthplace finish in the women’s 400-metre freestyle.

Invermere chiropractor Dr. Karen Fahrni, Morgan’s former coach, was there to cheer her on.

• Hermann and Ursel Mauthner warmed even the coldest of hearts when their love story was featured in our Valentine’s Day edition. The lovebirds, married for almost 50 years, were engaged without ever having met, after corresponding as pen pals for five years.

• Invermere Fire Rescue celebrated their 60th birthday in 2012. The volunteer-driven team, along with the valley’s six other fire departments in Edgewater, Radium, Panorama, Windermere, Fairmont and Canal Flats, make us proud each year for their hard work and dedication.

• February: at the start of the month, Barbara König became the Lake Windermere District Rod &

• Quadruple Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medals were handed out this summer to valley residents who made significant contributions to their communities. Windermere’s Anne Picton and Radium’s Phyllis Jackson, along with Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac and Corporal Grant Simpson were all recognized.

The medal was designed to recognize hard work and community spirit and celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II taking the throne.

Gun Club’s first ever female president in the organization’s 94-year history.

• February: Justice Lapointe-July collected more than 100 donations for the local food bank to celebrate the 100th day of term at Eileen Madson Primary.

• April: Floyd Verge, Kate Gibbs, Kingston Peters and all their fellow local ‘difference makers’, who helped to carry the Rick Hansen medal as the eponymous 25th anniversary relay rolled into the valley.

• October: Keira Neal emerged as a hockey-playing success story, overcoming an above-the-knee leg amputation required due to cancer and developing into an all-around athlete and happy, healthy girl.

Athletes A number of top-notch athletes represent the valley on a local, provincial and national level. Here are but a few: • Last winter, Benjamin Thomsen earned his Canadian Cowboy stripes with a stellar 2011-12 ski season, snagging his first ever podium finish in Sochi, Russia, on February 11th, just weeks after two back-to-back career best finishes in world Benjamin Thomsen cup races. He went on to compete in the world cup finals, a dream of his since he first began ski racing.

• In February, a plethora of local teams and players from across North America congregated in Invermere on February 4th and 5th for the valley’s first ever hosting of the BC Pond Hockey Championship.

• In March, local cross-country skiers Lyle Wilson, Julie Neville and Kim Kitching swept up the medals at the Canadian Masters Cross-Country Ski Championships in Golden from March 15th – 18th.

The trio faced off against 150 other racers from across Canada, bringing home medals in every single event.

• In August, Invermere’s Ed Kluczny, 91, brought home yet another gold medal to add to his 39-medal collection from 24 years of competing at the BC Seniors Games.

• Invermere’s Jakub Sumbera outran the pack at the Headbanger Trail Challenge in Radium on September 22nd, finishing more than seven minutes ahead of the nearest competitor.

• In October, Invermere teacher Nadyia Fry placed second among women out of 1,725 runners at an international marathon in Victoria.

Bizarre news stories • A tiny miniature Chihuahua named Roxy narrowly escaped becoming an owl’s dinner on March 7th, when the large bird swooped down and attempted to carry her away from her owners’ backyard.

• July 3rd will always be remembered by R.J. Tomazic of Invermere’s Lake Auto. The mechanic was shocked by the static charge of a lightning bolt that struck the auto service shop during a violent thunderstorm.

• A trio of cougar triplets and their mother were captured on camera up at Nipika Mountain Resort in early February. The elusive big cats, which are usually solitary, were spotted by infrared wildlife cameras.

• Recess at Eileen Madson Primary School had to be cancelled on February 16th due to a loitering deer refusing to leave the playground. The animal took an interest in a green ball that children were playing with and then headed towards those holding fruit and vegetables.

• On March 18th, Trudi Wells from Invermere was startled when a cougar and bighorn sheep, locked in a tussle to the death, plummeted from a cliff and landed beside her car while she was driving through Kootenay National Park.

• On July 27th, a man under the influence of narcotics leapt from the upper deck of the Radium Hot Springs pools and suffered major internal trauma and a head injury. The 24-year-old was rushed to Invermere and District Hospital where he was stabilized before being airlifted to Calgary.

People we’ve said goodbye to One of the hardest challenges is to report on the passing of much-loved community members. Below are some of the local people who we bid farewell to during 2012.

Nancy Tegart

• Ranching legend Nancy Tegart passed away on February 10th aged 99. The feisty lady, who penned a biography entitled ‘Letters from the Ranch’, was part of the women’s division of the Canadian Airforce in the 1940s and later helped run the Hidden Valley Ranch near Invermere.

Randy Martin

• Shuswap band members mourned the loss of council member and community leader Randy Martin, who passed away suddenly on May 9th while on a vacation to Las Vegas. Mr. Martin was remembered by band members as a respected sports coach, husband and father.

WINTER OPERATIONS The District of Invermere would like to remind everyone to take extra care while travelling during the winter season.

The District of Invermere strives to maintain municipal streets and sidewalks in as safe as possible condition. During the winter season however, Snow & Ice Control services are not intended to eliminate all hazardous conditions on District streets or sidewalks at all times. They are intended to assist vehicles and pedestrians that are properly equipped for winter travelling.

It is expected that under normal winter conditions, there will be situations when the immediate demand for Snow & Ice Control services will exceed the available resources. In order to maximize the benefits of operations, Snow & Ice Control staff shall conduct operations according to the priorities determined by emergency requirements and traffic volumes listed in the Snow and Ice Control policy.

Snow and Ice Control Operations will be available on a 24 hour a day basis, 7 days a week during the winter season.

Residential and commercial driveway entrances and sidewalks are the responsibility of the owner to be cleared of windrowed snow and ice to the degree that the mobility of vehicular and pedestrian traffic shall not be compromised.

We remind all residents that it is unlawful to pile, throw or shovel snow onto District roads or rights of ways when clearing snow.

Here’s how you can help...

Be a good neighbour. Clear snow and ice from sidewalks as soon as possible after a snowfall to ensure that they are safe for all residents.

Lend a hand to those who may not be physically able to shovel.

Do not park on the street during a snowstorm or while snow clearing operations are underway. Parked cars make plowing difficult, and sometimes impossible. With your help, winter maintenance crews can plow snow faster and more efficiently and you will reduce the chances of having to dig your car out of a snow drift.

Please make sure that your car is parked within your driveway. Please do not let it extend onto the street or sidewalk.

Keep children safe - don’t let them play in snow piles, or build snow forts in the snow banks at the side of the road.

Snow plows have no place to push the snow except to the curb or shoulder of the road. Sometimes this happens just after you have finished shoveling. We appreciate this can be frustrating; however, we ask for your cooperation in clearing this snow without placing it on the roadway. If you hire a private contractor to clear your driveway, make sure the contractor does not push snow into the traveled portion of the roadway, or fill in sidewalks.

Pile snow on the right side of your driveway (when facing the road) if possible when shoveling. This helps reduce the amount of snow created by the snowplow at the end of your driveway.

Remove snow from around fire hydrants on or near your property to enable quick access by emergency personnel if the need arises.

Do not place your garbage cans on top of snow banks. If possible place them on your driveway near the edge of the road.

How firm is your foundation?

By Pastor Rev. Fraser Coltman, St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission of Invermere I sat in a lecture hall at the University of Alberta for a geography class. The student next to me was several years older than I. As the classes of this spring session passed, we introduced ourselves and talked about our education plans. My friend was a philosophy student. I was preparing for the ministry. We had some very interesting conversations.

He told me that he was a rationalist. He did not believe in God or anything that he couldn’t see, hear, smell, touch or taste.

So committed was he to his reason-centered life that he refused to use “I believe” in a sentence. For “believe” he always substituted “think.” I was impressed by his discipline, even a little shamed by it. After all, I certainly struggled with doubts and worries that betrayed the weakness of my faith. I still do.

The day of our final exam my friend was already in his seat when I arrived. Sitting down beside him, I sensed that

something wasn’t right. He seemed upset. I asked him how he was feeling. He explained, “I’m really nervous.

I’ve studied for this exam, but I’m afraid that I’m going to forget what I’ve studied once we get going.” Wanting to help him, I asked if he would like me to pray for him. Instead of reminding me that he didn’t believe in prayer, he said, “Thanks! That would be great.” I did pray for him, and I think that he made it through his test successfully.

There are some things in life that just cannot support us when pushed to their limits. My friend relied on his reason diligently, and it worked for him when life was going well, but when faced with a test, he realized that his powers of reason were fallible. No amount of study could guarantee him success: his mind could let him down.

So can my faith. It’s not really my faith that sees me through in life. My faith can falter because I am weak.

It’s God that won’t fail us. God calls us His creatures. He promises that He loves us though we disobey Him, that He has given His Son to die to give us a forgiving welcome with Him. He calls us to live lives of love for Him and each other and promises that nothing – not even death – can pull us from His loving embrace. When I rest my faith in God, then I am secure in God’s care.

As you look toward a new year where will you look for security? When I look to God in faith, I find my feet standing on bedrock. Will you join me?
