Ben Thomsen wins silver in Sochi

Invermere’s Benjamin Thomsen started this World Cup ski racing season as an underdog. But his first-ever podium finish last weekend in Russia silenced dissenters, cementing his place as a rising downhill sensation.

“He’s a one-time wonder,” “He’s going to choke,” “He’s a glider — he’ll never be good on this course.” Heading into Saturday’s downhill race in Sochi, Russia, Ben had heard it all.

But while his fellow competitors made good-natured digs, Ben concentrated on the task at hand, ripping his way down a punishing course to steal second place from France’s Adrien Theux.

Invermere ordered to put brakes on cull

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff A group of deer lovers has taken legal action to halt the cull of 100 of Invermere’s urban deer population.

Opponents to the cull succeeded in putting a temporary stop to the cull process last week, when they served an injunction from the Supreme Court to the district that prevents the cull Mayor Gerry Taft from going ahead until at least February 24th.

The injunction was sought by and successfully granted to the Invermere Deer Protection Organization, a group of residents opposed to the cull. The organization, along with Invermere resident Shane Suman, are the official names on the court documents.

The injunction is part of a larger lawsuit which is challenging the validity of two bylaws, passed in August of 2011 and January of 2012, the first authorizing the cull to go ahead and the second hiring the contractor to carry out the cull, said Vancouver-based lawyer Rebeka Breder of Boughton Law Corporation, who will be representing the Invermere Deer Protection Organization.

Damages for nuisance are also being sought by a number of those opposed, as the impending cull has allegedly caused some residents a significant amount of distress, the effects of which include sleeplessness, loss of appetite, nightmares, and in some cases symptoms of secondary trauma effect.

The bylaw challenges are based on the opinion that council did not consult with the public enough prior to

making their decision, and that the bylaws were passed based on insufficient information and possibly even just copied from the processes that took place in Kimberley and Cranbrook, both towns where deer culls were recently completed, Ms. Breder said.

“Animal cruelty is a part we are looking into as well,” she added. “There is definitely a potential for the argument that the district is in violation of cruelty legislation, whether it’s the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act or the Wildlife Act,” she said.

The injunction was personally delivered to the district office on Thursday, February 9th, by spokesman for the Invermere Deer Protection Organization, Vince Zurbriggen, who said that he feels the conclusions reached by the original deer committee were not based on accurate, factual information.

“From my personal perspective, when you sue the town and make a lot of claims, that’s not a sign of wanting to work together.”

They went for the easiest solution, which is a cull,” Mr. Zurbriggen said.

Also speaking against the cull, resident Shane Suman said that he feels a cull should be the last resort, not the first strategy adopted by the district in response to the deer issue.

“We said killing the deer is an irreversible solution.

Once it is done you can’t bring them back. We have been living with them for decades, so we asked for a temporary stop to it,” he said.

“We’re not asking for a permanent cancellation or anything, so we can get together as a whole community and address the issues that people bring up. We know there are problems — people talk about aggressive deer or deer sometimes eating plantations and vegetable gardens — and we are willing to listen to the concerns and find solutions to the concerns,” he added.

By his interpretation of the results from a survey that was conducted in Invermere to gather public opinion about the deer cull, Mr. Suman said he believes that people want solutions, but they don’t want the deer killed carte blanche.

“They want solutions. How the problem is solved is not their concern, they just want a solution to the problem,” Mr. Suman said. “We are looking for something that is cost-effective, something that will be more permanent and long-term and something the whole community can feel united about and not divided.”

Explaining why he got involved in the issue, Mr. Suman said he and his wife, Monie, moved to the valley a year-and-a-half ago, and were instantly enamoured with the deer that live within the town.

He acknowledged that he is the same Shane Suman who was recently found guilty, along with his wife, of insider trading by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and ordered to pay over $4 million dollars in fines and profits, but stated that the issues are completely unrelated, and he has nothing to hide in relation to the case.

Mr. Suman is also the driving force behind a Facebook group dedicated to opposing the cull, so he said if he was trying to hide from his other legal troubles he wouldn’t be putting himself out there in the public eye.

“I am here, everyone knows where I am and if someone was trying to get away they wouldn’t be exposing themselves like this,” Mr. Suman said.

• On February 8th at 3:40 a.m., RCMP responded to a complaint of a break-and-enter in the 800 block of Timber View Drive, Lakeview Cottages. Cups, dishes and some cash were stolen.

• On February 8th at 7:25 p.m., a black iPhone 4 was stolen from dressing room number two at the arena.

Police are presently looking at videotape.

• On February 9th at 1:45 a.m., Columbia Valley Detachment members responded to a disturbance complaint in the 1000 block of 8th Ave., Invermere.

A 33-year-old man from Cranbrook was located highly intoxicated. The man was lodged in cells and released later when sober. He was charged with being drunk in public. While in custody the male did some damage to the cell block area. As a result, his offence went from a minor ticket under the Liquor Act to a charge of mischief under the Criminal Code.

• On February 10th, police received a complaint of theft from the Fairmont ski hill. A ski bag containing grey UGG boots, ladies’ size 6-7; and brown, men’s cross trainers, size 10, was stolen. A silver Gateway laptop was also stolen from the lounge area.

• On February 10th at 10:30 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a complaint of a 1998 GMC Sierra driving around with no plates. The vehicle was located abandoned in Athalmer. It was towed and a family member was made aware of the tow.

• On February 11th at 2:30 a.m., the Columbia Valley Detachment was advised of a disturbance on Main Street in Radium. Police were busy at the time and unable to respond immediately. It was later learned that the people causing the disturbance were staying at one of the rooms in the Prestige. Encouraged by hotel staff, they made their way to their rooms. Police did eventually attend and all was quiet.

• On February 12th at 8:20 p.m., police received a report of a break-and-enter in the 8000 block of Grainger Road in Canal Flats. A cabin was broken into and a mounted sheep head, mink pelt, some CDs and tape player were stolen. It is believed this theft may have happened during the past three months.

• Columbia Valley Detachment members and Conservation Officers did lake patrols on snow machines on Lake Windermere this past Saturday and checked 37 sober anglers. One charge was laid, one warning given and two further charges are pending with the Conservation Officer. No trophy fish were observed.

Probationary period Many of you may think that probation time deals with people who are convicted of a criminal offence. Not the case. It also applies to “Husbands Gone Wild.”

Many friends have been asking lately if my probation time has expired. I wrote an article in the past about how, as a result of a photo radar ticket awhile back, I was put on probation period by my wife, Bev, where I was forbidden from entering or purchasing anything at the Pro Bass store in Calgary.

Friends, I certainly appreciate the concern. Just to bring you up to date: just as this probationary period was about to expire I got another ticket. A big ticket that resulted in a much bigger period of probation. Somehow my wife figured out the average I spend each time I go into Pro Bass and she worked out the time period accordingly.

I convinced Bev to let me in this past Christmas to purchase fishing rods for family members. It was a supervised visit. She told me I could not buy any more stuff for myself. The smell, and just being able to walk amongst my people were enough to keep me going for awhile.

This past week was another important time of the month for us husbands to remember. I took her to the Calgary boat show. Showed her a good time. Visited my dream boat again and again had to leave it behind. Sad eyes did not work.

The salesperson saw me sitting in the boat and commented, “You look good in that boat, sir.” I took him aside and told him, “Do I look like I’m a hard sale here?”

I pointed to my wife and advised him that she is the one he had to convince. He was not a good salesperson.

I’m pretty sure that come spring, my probationary period will expire. I appreciate those who had concerns and will keep you posted.

Court Report The Invermere Law Courts were in session on Monday, February13th, presided over by the Honourable Judge R. Webb.

• Timothy J. Anderson of Edgewater pled guilty to causing Mischief under $5,000.

The court heard that on August 6th, 2011, Mr. Anderson and his partner had an argument, which resulted in Mr. Anderson throwing a number of items off of the couple’s balcony, including a lamp and a microwave stand. At the conclusion of the incident, he allegedly took a rock and threw it through a vehicle’s windshield.

Mr. Anderson was ordered to pay a fine of $500 within three months, as well as a $50 Victim Surcharge Fee. • Sylvian Boutros, 22, pled guilty to one count of assault using a weapon.

The court heard that on November 15th, 2011, Mr. Boutros, who is from Quebec, got into an altercation with another male in front of Bud’s Bar and Lounge in Invermere.

The girlfriend of the other male involved allegedly heard Mr. Boutros make a comment that he could beat up girls because he’s not from this country. The female was offended and told Mr. Boutros so.

The two exchanged words, at which point the female’s boyfriend became involved and exchanged words with Mr. Boutros. Mr. Boutros then pulled a small can of pepper spray from his pocket, sprayed the male in the face, and walked away.

Mr. Boutros was sentenced to serve seven days in jail during weekends. He is not permitted to possess firearms for two years, and is required to submit a DNA sample.

• Clayton Lasser, 23, pled guilty to two instances of Breach of Probation.

The court heard that on June 26th and November 12th, 2011, Mr. Lasser was observed drinking. He was prohibited from doing so, due to a probation imposed from an earlier assault conviction.

He was charged $200 and a Victim Surcharge Fee of $50 for each instance, totaling $500, which he was

ordered to pay within six months.

• Ben E. Persson, 46, of Edgewater, pled guilty to one count of trafficking a controlled substance.

The two individuals were in fact undercover police officers who were part of a drug bust operation called Project E Penninsula, which focused on drug sales in the Columbia Valley and Calgary region between 2007-2008. In order to protect the anonymity of the operation, Mr. Persson was not immediately arrested for the incident.

Fawning the flames

Oh deer! The battle between Bambi-lovers and cull supporters reached a crescendo last week when the newly-formed Invermere Deer Protection Organization served the District of Invermere with injunction papers from the Supreme Court of B.C., which will temporarily halt the planned deer cull.

The legal move hit national newswires and was covered by CBC, the Calgary Herald, and the Vancouver Sun, which reported a community “under siege by deer.”

Herein lies the main problem surrounding the deer issue: over-dramatization and misinformation.

On both sides of the deer-proof fence, people have let fear and emotion overrule common sense. The jargon that has been used to describe the situation is worthy of a blockbuster movie script. “Murder!” “Fear-mongerers!”

“Slaughter!” “Secretive!”

What I personally find most frustrating is the amount of misinformation that is being circulated via Facebook, letters, and radio interviews. To state that the District of Invermere mayor and council cooked up the deer cull behind closed doors is simply wrong, yet it is a mistruth that has been repeated several times.

The Pioneer has been reporting on the possibility of a deer cull since May 2010. Much of the information that was gathered for that article and all subsequent articles was done at public meetings, open to anyone who may have had a venison ... errr ... a beef, with the idea.

I support the right for anyone to oppose an issue, and I truly admire the group who had the courage to protest the cull by walking with signs through downtown Invermere. It is incredibly difficult to express your opinion in a small town without being chastised for it.

However, much of the criticism that has been directed at council would be more appropriately aimed at the provincial government, who actually have the power to change the rules of options like relocation — options the district is unable to pursue without further developments on the provincial level. Now, due in a large part to a lack of understanding of process and the full scope of the urban deer issue, likely thousands of Invermere residents’ dollars will instead be spent battling an avoidable lawsuit.

Group cries wolf too late Dear Editor: I found it disturbing to find that another newly-formed special-interest group has taken legal action against the District of Invermere, claiming that there was not sufficient process involved in making the decision to cull the resident deer population.

I would urge this group to review the actual process that was involved before they waste any more of the court system’s time and resources, as your civil case has little merit.

Obtaining a temporary injunction in non-contested motion is relatively easy.

Should council choose to oppose your action, the court will hear that council followed all the steps necessary to make this decision, as did the other councils in the area that are participating in culls. And that it was the province that granted the cull licence.

If the matter was of this much importance to your group, where were you when the process was in motion? And during the election?

I don’t consider myself plugged in to the local political scene but I was aware of the ongoing process. Had I issues such as yours I would have at least sought out one of our electoral officials and let them know.

It’s not like we don’t know who they are. If you don’t happen to see one of them on the streets, they are in the phone book.

There are many issues that may affect your day-to-day life in the hands of elected officials at all levels, it is up to you to let your views be known to them.

Don’t let the case of the HST referendum lead you to believe that to “Cry Wolf ” after elected politicians at any level make decisions that affect our lives in any way will change policy. You have to be constantly vigilant of what elected officials do on our behalf.

It is your responsibility to be aware of what policies elected officials are instituting at all levels: federal, provincial and even more importantly, at your local level.

Where is the justice?

I always thought justice was served in the courthouse. However, I was recently involved in a civil case in the B.C. Supreme Court where a lawyer stated to me that they were not there for justice, but only to do the best for their client. If it takes a technical error to get a case dismissed, so be it.

Humans are the real pests, not deer Thursday March 1st – 7:00 p.m.

My family and I have lived in the Invermere area for many years. I am aware of the issue with the deer. I was unable to make the District of Invermere council meeting as I had to work.

I understand how some people are irritated with the fact that deer are disturbing their gardens and flower beds, but can’t they put up chicken wire and other blockages to prevent the deer from eating what they are naturally attracted to?

Why is killing the deer the only “solution” there is?

Humans keep repopulating the earth, but the government doesn’t order a cull to “control” the over population.

I am strongly appalled that this “solution” would even be brought to the mayor and councillors in the first place. People who don’t have money to buy chemicallyinjected meat from grocery stores use deer to provide food for their families.

It was said that the meat will go to families who need it but what if the food banks and other resources don’t accept meat that is not properly inspected?

In addition to allowing families who are in need of meat to hunt them, several options exist to control deer numbers including allowing nature to take its course, relocation, fencing, repellents, fertility control, supple-

mental food, and reintroduction of predators. Why can’t these options, along with many other options be looked into and discussed?

People refer to the deer as the “pest” when really, the humans are the pest.

We develop houses, big resorts, corporate developments, and other “resources” to attract tourists just to make a quick buck. I grew up in this small town and many others like it are slowly starting to develop just like Invermere.

Deer were here decades before humans were. God created them so that man could have means of food and use the hides and pelts for clothing and footwear to stay warm. The deer provide many resources to many families, and who are you to try and get rid of something that has been in many family traditions for years, and has been the main resource to stay alive for more than several families?

The deer show aggression towards humans because it is a natural instinct for them to protect their families when they feel threatened. Our ancestors were barbaric cavemen, but we should not follow their footsteps.

A friend of mine who walks at night recently told me that while walking down Main Street, he saw a whimsical sight.

A young deer was staring intently into the window of High Country Realty. At the same time, another young deer was staring into the window of Re/Max Realty while a larger deer, presumably its mother, stood not far away.

I can just imagine the young deer hollering at the big one, “Hey Mom, here’s one with an acreage!”

My friend also told me that on his winter walks, he has occasionally seen deer staring into downtown display windows. One was even checking out what was playing at the theatre, and one was eying up the candy selection at Candyland.

Are there any cartoonists out there? I’ve been wishing we could have cartoons in The Pioneer about the ongoing deer issue.

Who knows what goes on in downtown Invermere after midnight. Maybe these critters meet for their own meetings. One of the deer in the crowd might say, “Have you girls heard what went on at the humans’ meeting last

night?” and another would say, “I don’t wanna know, I just wanna keep on smelling Gerry’s cookies.”

With due regard for Mr. Nemeth’s great idea about the experts using horse trailers to tote the captives out to Crown land, please excuse my odd depiction of totecartooning: At first, I saw a horse trailer, doors open to an unlikely passenger, the deer’s front feet fiercely dug into the ground and being pulled by a lasso around its neck, while behind, humans are hitting its rump with ropes like some people do to load horses.

No matter which side of the deer issue we’re on, couldn’t we use a little humour right about now? Or will we become like the Hatfields and McCoys, the famous dueling families in the U.S.? I feel another cartoon coming on.

No, Invermereites are good folks for the most part, and they will find a solution.

Cartoonists, could you bug the good folks at The Pioneer who publish our letters? Pictures say a thousand words. My thousand is up.

LETTERS Reader says ‘editorial attacks’ are Other solutions based on false information available for deer Dear Editor: I wish to respond to your February 3rd editorial ‘A New Low’ in which you stated that “a group of people has started a boycott of the personal businesses of the mayor and council ...”

I too am strongly apposed to such an initiative. I agree with Bill Ark’s letter (Pioneer, February 10th) that whether you agree with council or not, “Personal attacks on any of them is immature and not acceptable.”

However the “new low” to which I am referring occurred when you included what I believe to be an absolutely false statement that a similar boycott attack took place some years ago against business owners who supported the Jumbo project. This the first I’ve heard of such an effort and I must question the veracity of your statement.

I can state unequivocally that neither Wildsight nor the Jumbo Creek Conservation Society has ever been involved in such an activity.

A survey of local business owners was conducted by a prominent business person in 2004, which resulted in

81 business owners signing letters addressed to Premier Campbell stating they were not in favor of the Jumbo development (See Valley Echo business feature of September 15th, 2004), but no mention or intention of “boycott” was involved.

In my opinion your editorial attacks on environmental groups that are working to protect our environment are based upon false (or at least incorrect) information, and totally lacking in objectivity.

I ask that in future you include your source of information when you launch into attack mode, and I offer you the benefit of my extensive files if you wish to use them.

Local doubts Jumbo financial support Dear Editor: I am writing regarding your article ‘Province, resort supporters flying to France’ in The Pioneer’s February 3rd edition. For many years, people in the valley have been saying that the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort would never become a reality because no one would be willing to invest many millions of dollars in such a venture.

Oberto Oberti, the Jumbo Glacier Resort promoter, has always tried to give the impression that he had rich investors willing to stand behind him. Now, because of this trip to France, the truth is starting to come out. I have always suspected he never really had any serious financing and now with this trip, my suspicions appear to be justified.

In 1999, the Iris/Sno Engineering economic feasibility report, partly financed by the B.C. Government, was

very negative about the Jumbo Glacier Resort proposal.

Not once during the past 13 years have I ever heard Mr. Oberti defend his proposal against this report. As for the government, it spent $60,000 of taxpayers’ money to produce the report, then swept it under the rug.

The Schaffer Economic Report, commissioned by the Ktunaxa First Nation and released in May 2011, is also very negative about Jumbo Glacier Resort.

Not only does Mr. Oberti have to convince prospective investors that these economic reports are unimportant, he will have to convince them that the people of Kootenays are also unimportant. He has a very, very difficult task ahead of him.

Dear Editor: The cry of deer echo silently through Invermere, “To be or not to be?”

Citizens’ voices call out, “How do we stop the upcoming kill?” Reactions come daily, in tsunami waves of agreement or dissent, on the culling of 100 deer.

The method is capture by clover trap, followed by a bolt gun shot to the head.

Most of us knew plans were happening behind the scenes, without any details of how it would be carried out. Recently the town council plan was released.

We forget the deer are a part of our landscape, similar to the untouchable Bighorn sheep in Radium.

They prune our shrubs, cross roads gracefully in the style of aging seniors and make our town unique.

With only two-thirds of our deer population destined to survive, many of us were suddenly shocked.

It was the method that stirred emotions, as well as the large number of deer that would be culled.

Having done limited research on clover traps and bolt guns, I felt strongly this would not be a humane way to deal with our permanent residents. They would undoubtedly suffer, releasing negative fear energy over many nights and days. The family pattern of the herd would be broken. All animals suffer fear and pain when facing capture. The meat donated to the food bank at $300 an animal could contain stress hormones.

At the moment, we need a cooling off period with a two-week legal injunction in place. My thanks go out to the Invermere Deer Protection Organization.

I believe any long-term program should include several strategies: continued education on living with deer; sterilization of select males; keeping garbage secure; dealing with problem deer using trained sheep dogs and handlers and, as a last resort, euthanasia.

Our council has spent many hours and days coming to a cull decision which is not proving acceptable to many. There are no easy answers. Some are in favor of the cull. We can only learn by working together.

I would like to see new strategies generated by a small volunteer committee working with one or two council representatives and a relaxed time schedule.

. . .‘Invermere ordered to put brakes on cull’ continued from page 3 The ultimate goal of the injunction and lawsuit isn’t simply to stall the process until the permit issued by the province runs out on March 15th, he said. If the district wants to come back to the discussion table, the Invermere Deer Protection Organization would be willing to end the court battle.

“Going to the court was our last option,” Mr. Suman said. “We have tried every other avenue to convince mayor and council to put a temporary halt [to the cull] so we have time to negotiate, discuss and find a solution outside of court, but it is their stubbornness and refusal to discuss anything other than killing the deer which forced us to go down this path.

“If at any time the district wants to talk to us we are open and we are going to go back to our original proposal. We can discuss solutions and come together as a community.”

In terms of the case itself, the challenge could be the first of its kind in the province, and possibly even Canada, Ms. Breder said. As of press time she had not yet met with the district’s counsel, who were not consulted prior to the injunction being filed.

If the district were to be successful in having the injunction removed, there would be an opportunity to appeal the decision. As well, the lawsuit could take months to resolve.

The district’s court costs will come out of tax-

payer’s pockets, while costs for retaining the lawyer for the Invermere Deer Protection Organization, which could reach upwards of tens of thousands of dollars, will be paid for out of the pockets of the members of the organization, Mr. Suman said.

Responding to the injunction, the District of Invermere are engaging their regular lawyers from Vancouver-based firm, Young Anderson, and are unable to comment in too much detail while the court battle is taking place, Mayor Gerry Taft said.

“Basically, we’re looking to have the injunction set aside. That’s our immediate goal. A lot of their claims I really question and I am quite troubled with some of the things they brought up. I think some of their statements are bordering on slanderous and in some cases are inaccurate,” Mr. Taft said.

“It’s a challenge because the petition, and the petitioners, are 14 people, and it’s frustrating that 14 people could have such a huge influence on a decision. Hopefully it doesn’t result in a lot of legal costs. It is disappointing.”

Mayor Taft added that council has yet to receive any official communication from the Invermere Deer Protection Organization expressing a desire to work together.

“From my personal perspective, when you sue the town and make a lot of claims, that’s not a sign of wanting to work together,” he said.

Possible park expansion for Canal Flats

A larger downtown park may be in the works for Canal Flats after the village purchased two lots from the province that could allow for expansion of the existing park near the Post Office. With the purchase of 0.15 acres of new land, the small park could double in size once the village finds the cash for the work or if some local volunteers are willing to help, said Chief Administrative Officer Brian Woodward.

“It’s not a lot of work and could probably be done in a couple of months,” he added, acknowledging that the village hasn’t got the budget to develop the land during 2012.

No decision has been made yet for the usage of the land, reminded the village’s mayor, Ute Juras, adding that she would like to see some kind of public consultation before a decision is made on how to proceed.

Along with doubling the size of the park already in place, an additional suggestion is to turn the third 60-foot by 100foot lot into additional downtown parking.

“At this point, we are just very excited that the long process of obtaining the Crown Grant has been favorable to the Village,” said Mayor Juras.

The purchase, which was approved on January 26th, was dreamed up by the village’s first council after the small community was incorporated in 2004.

Movie Review: The Rum Diary

Reviewed by Joshua Estabrooks Before you watch The Rum Diary, be clear about one thing: this is not Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

It isn’t trying to be, and there’s just no way it could be, having been written decades before the now-famous story of drugs, debauchery and journalism was even a twinkle in famous American journalist, Hunter S. Thompson’s bloodshot eye.

The Rum Diary novel was written in 1961 by a 22-year-old Thompson, but wasn’t published until 1998.

The movie has been in the works since 2000, and has seen various incarnations of cast and directors. It stars Johnny Depp, a real-life good friend of the doctor of journalism. Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, helped make the film a reality, but it has received mixed reviews by the “critics.”

The film tells the story of Paul Kemp, a young journalist who relocates to Puerto Rico to work for The San Juan Star. At the time, Thompson was himself living in Puerto Rico working for a small sports paper, so there is a subtle autobiographical element, as is the case with most of Thompson’s works.

In amongst all the rum swilling and hamburger eating, there are moments of pure genius, which I attribute to the original story penned in the 60s.

It’s true that the adaptation to film creates somewhat of a rushed feeling, but the book itself has an intensity that only a young idealistic writer could produce, and for true fans of Thompson’s work, it gives a live action look at the young author as he develops the “gonzo” style which changed the literary world forever.

A myriad of references to the American Dream peppered throughout the film pay homage to Thompson’s

life-long obsession with finding the truth of existence, and the actors playing the twisted characters all do an incredible job, especially Depp and Giovanni Ribisi.

I found the ending a tad hurried, and a little unsatisfying, but the film as a whole does an incredible job at representing the themes and feelings contained in the original manuscript. Bruce Robinson wrote and directed the film, coming out of an almost 20-year directorial hiatus after his last film, Jennifer 8, received poor reviews.

I’ll be the first to admit this movie isn’t for everyone, but received with the right kind of eye and an open mind, it has the potential to teach something about life, love and the legacy of one of the greatest writers of our time.

Sink your teeth into upcoming wild game banquet

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff Get your incisors sharpened and your utensils at the ready: the Lake Windermere Rod and Gun Club will be hosting their everpopular banquet and dance on February 25th at the Invermere Community Hall.

The banquet night, which has been occurring for over half a century, is unique because it serves local wild game in various forms, said Vic Thomas, Chairman of the Banquet Committee.

It is also the major fundraising event for the club, and it is where awards are handed out for those who took part in the hunting season.

This year marks the 93rd anniversary of the Rod and Gun Club.

“We have a live auction and a silent auction, as well as 50/50 draws, bucket draws and door prizes. It’s very well attended. We usually sell out,” Mr. Thomas said.

The club usually sells about 200 tickets, and the event is well supported by local businesses through donations to the auctions and prize pool.

All of the food for the evening is prepared by local caterer, Anne Riches, and is donated by local hunters.

Some of the dishes attendees can look forward to include bear ham, elk or moose stroganoff, and even cougar curry.

Konig Meat and Sausage Company provides the bear hams, Mr. Thomas said, while Ms. Riches creates the rest.

“Anne does a magnificent job on the food.

We have all kinds of exotic stuff for people to try. We always have the typical elk, moose, deer and sheep.

“We even had beaver one year,” Mr. Thomas said.

Cooking wild game is not always an easy task, Anne Riches said. She operates her catering business out of Copper Point Golf Course

and said she adjusts her recipes depending on the meat she receives.

“I do different dishes every year. If the meat will be tough I like to make stroganoff or something that’s baked to make it tender.

I make lasagna or cabbage rolls out of the ground elk, and I’ll do kabobs too. Everyone liked the cougar curry last year,” she said.

Ms. Riches also provides the hors d’œuvres before the meal, delighting attendees’ tastebuds with the unique treats.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner service at 6 p.m. and will continue long into the evening, around 1 a.m. or until the DJ quits, Mr. Thomas said.

Tickets for the event cost $40 and are available at The Book Bar, K5 Mechanical, Home Hardware and Kootenay Coffee Works.

Artym exhibition celebrates joy of winter

By Deanna Berrington Artym Gallery The Artym Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition celebrating the beauty and joyous nature of winter. Featuring two of the most popular Artym gallery artists, Angela Morgan and Serge Dubé, this show opens Friday, February 17th.

Artist Serge Dubé will be in attendance for an evening reception on Friday from 6-9 p.m., and on Saturday, February 18th, he will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Despite an inconsistent winter, our pair of artists have been busy with their brushes, celebrating the best parts of the season. Angela captures the pure joy that comes with winter play, while Serge depicts the vibrancy and drama of winter landscapes.

Both painters eschew the traditional drab colours of winter; the white and grey tones that can be so prevalent in seasonal paintings are absent.

Instead, brightness prevails — a riot of colour and action that grabs the attention of the viewer and creates a sense of warmth, despite the cold outdoor temperatures.

Angela Morgan is well known for her whimsical and vibrant paintings of children, childhood and those who are still children at heart. Famous internationally for her exuberant and unique paintings, Angela will have over 20 new winter-

themed pieces on show at the Artym.

The celebrated female artist has been with the Artym for over eight years, and in that time her style has evolved along with her career and reputation. As her premiere gallery, the Artym has been alongside Angela through her exponential growth and is always keen to hold solo shows for her, in addition to having her new work consistently throughout the year.

The paintings of our second artist, Serge Dubé, are fascinating. His unique technique of working with highly liquid paint gives his pieces an unusual feel that fascinates the eye and mind.

In creating still-life paintings, as well as mountain, waterfall and landscape pieces, his use of colour varies wildly, ensuring that there is a painting of his that will appeal to any taste.

Serge’s work is collected across Canada and although he has only been with the gallery for a few years, his name is fast becoming recognized as one of the Artym’s top artists.

Breaking up your retirement account Perhaps the biggest concern with investors as they near retirement is what to do with their investment accounts.

Usually those about to retire begin to move a portion of their accounts into safer investments such as government bonds or GICs. With today’s ultra-low interest rates however, it is difficult for many to move into investments that won’t even keep up with inflation. On the other hand, those same investors haven’t been happy with the volatility of the stock markets in the past several years. The thought of retiring and leaving too much money in stocks or mutual funds can be very discomforting.

Fortunately, there is a simple strategy that can help those newly retired, or those about to retire, manage their savings effectively and still be able to sleep at night.

Break up your account The idea of breaking up your RRSP or RRIF account doesn’t involve any radical withdrawals from the account.

What it means to break up your retirement account is to manage three separate pools of money amongst all of your retirement savings. Rather than thinking about your investments as one big pool of money with one bottom line, think of your savings as three pools of money each with their own objectives.

Cash pool The most important pool of money within your re-

tirement savings should be liquid and ready cash. This portion of your account should be invested in guaranteed products such as t-bills, cashable or very short-term GICs or CDIC insured Investment Savings Accounts.

The cash pool is going to be where you provide yourself with a steady flow of monthly payments, if needed, or money for one-off expenses or big-ticket items. A simple rule would be to ensure that you have one year to 18 months of needed cash in the cash pool. More conservative investors or those with small pensions may want to hold more.

Fixed income pool The fixed income pool is money that will come due or be cashed out of as the cash pool winds down. Fixed income investments are low or medium-risk investments such as medium-term government bonds, preferred shares, corporate bonds or mutual funds with lower risk profiles and fixed-income payments.

The idea of a fixed-income pool is to add stability to your overall retirement portfolio and to provide a source of renewal for your cash pool.

Long-term investment pool The long-term investment pool is meant to be managed for long-term growth. The key here is long-term, and the investments should be left alone during downturns in the market because they won’t be needed right

away. The long-term investment pool is meant to maximize the growth of a portion of your assets over the next five to 10 years.

It is common for those who are retired or about to retire to express concern about not having time to wait for the markets to come back. Often these concerns overlook the fact that they might need to have their money last another 20 to 30 years and having a long-term investment pool can greatly help. Long-term investments will be generally invested in stocks but can also include income trusts, real estate investment trusts (REITs) or long-term bonds.

Common mistake Perhaps the biggest mistake of setting up investment accounts for retirement is not having a big enough cash pool. The investment industry can be largely to blame for this as cash investments are the lowest revenue generating class of investments. Even programs that are labeled conservative will often only have 5-10 per cent cash holdings and this may not be enough.

Having enough cash on hand is very important in retirement as it allows the investor the luxury of choosing to sell some riskier investments or use cash when spending money in retirement. After all, the whole point of saving money for retirement is to hopefully be able to do what you want, when you want, not having to wait out the markets.

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A local businesswoman is putting her keen eye to good use, offering hassle-free shopping that brings handpicked fashions, accessories and gifts together under one roof. Teresa Rogal, a former valley hairdresser, started her unique shopping business, My Girlfriend’s Closet, toward the end of last year.

Making regular trips to the United States and nearby cities, Teresa hunts for cute clothing, footwear, accessories and miscellaneous gift items at bargain prices. After loading up with choices, Teresa brings her finds back to the valley, alerting her clients that “the closet is full” and that they can come and browse through the goodies in her home studio.

“I grew up here and then moved back to the valley eight years ago and because of the reduced amount of shopping compared to the city, almost immediately started making trips to the States to shop,” Teresa said. “I had a girlfriend say, “I love what you find when you go down there and I’d love it if you’d pick stuff out for me.’

That’s where it all began.”

After starting out picking up clothing, shoes and trinkets for friends and family, in October 2011 Teresa decided to turn the idea into an actual business, supplementing the range of clothing already available locally.

“Low-end and high-end was offered in the valley, but there didn’t seem to be much middle ground,” she explained. “I’m a great deal finder. I love to bargain hunt

and go through racks and do all of that stuff for people who maybe don’t like shopping.”

Teresa is constantly adding to the stock at her large home studio in Invermere, which individuals and groups can book appointments to visit. Also available are group parties with nibbles, wine and an evening of trying on clothing and accessories.

In the initial consultation, potential customers are encouraged to try on outfits and chat about their personal style and tastes to give Teresa a better idea of what to hunt for. She can then hand-pick items that she thinks will suit on future shopping trips or hunt for specific clothing items or accessories for a special occasion.

Sizes range from extra small to extra large, with a constantly changing stock depending on the bargains Teresa has managed to snap up during her latest trip. Along with any style of women’s and female teen clothing, Teresa also stocks jewelry, shoes and boots, bags, scarves, hats, gifts and smaller home accessories, lingerie, adult toys, and themed seasonal items.

“I don’t want something to be OK or good: I want it to be fantastic,” Teresa said. “I always take someone down with me to try the clothing on and see how things fit, how the fabric hangs and give a second opinion. I won’t buy it unless it’s just right.

“There’s no junk and nothing super expensive, but people can request certain brand names and I will hunt for them ... It’s really a personalized shopping experience.”

Winterfest revelers have been busy acing their curling releases, sharpening their skates, and practising their fire-making skills.

The third annual winter-themed festivities in Radium Hot Springs kick off this weekend, Saturday, February 18th, at the Legend’s Field ballpark.

The main attraction at the event is a spirited but friendly curling spiel at the outdoor skating rink, which has been flooded especially for curling.

“The ice makers have been busy this week. They’ve been flooding it twice a day,” said one of the event’s organizers, Village or Radium Councillor Clara Reinhardt.

The curling event is open to 16 teams, and registration is still open. The teams play two, four-end games, with rocks donated by the Invermere Curling Club.

“It’s the perfect way to try out curling because the distance is a little shorter than a typical curling sheet,” Councillor Reinhardt said.

“The curling is open to family teams, kid teams, and even people who have never curled before. It’s a wonderful way to be introduced to a lifetime sport.”

For those who aren’t interested in curling, there will be regular skating in the ball diamond, tobogganing, hot chocolate, crafts for children, and the fast-paced wilderness challenge. The outdoorsman (or woman) challenge pits participants in a race to saw through a log, haul wood, start a fire, and get a pot of water boiling to prove their survival skill prowess.

Also high on the popularity list is the tasty potato skin competition, where local restaurants battle it out to create the most delicious potato toppers. Last year’s champion was the Horsethief Pub. “Mostly, it’s a great place to meet, chat, and catch up with your neighbours during the winter when you don’t always see people out on the street in the same way,” Councillor Reinhardt said. “I really encourage people to come out and participate.”

8-year-old raises stocks at food bank

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Pint-sized humanitarian Justice Lapointe-July recently turned an ordinary school project into a fundraiser for the Columbia Valley Food Bank.

The 8-year-old Grade 3 student was tasked with celebrating the 100th day of school at Eileen Madson Primary School by doing something of her choice with 100 of any item.

With the help of her parents, Greg and Diane, Justice decided to take her project to the streets of Invermere and canvas door-to-door to collect food donations for the food bank.

“I was a little bit scared and not very good at the speaking part at first, but it started to become more easy and fun,” Justice said. “When people gave me food, I told them, ‘The food bank and I thank you.’”

In just three days Justice collected a little more than 100 food items. She counted, sorted, and delivered the haul herself to the food bank, where volunteer Doug Leibel gave her a tour and explained what would happen with her donation.

“He told me the food I brought was enough to feed four families,” Justice said. “He was really nice.”

Doug said Justice’s donation was “just fantastic.”

He added that she’s not the only Columbia Valley kid to

spread her generosity to the food bank. A few times each year Doug sees donations from local youths who go as far as asking for food bank contributions instead of presents at their birthday parties.

Justice said her project was well-received by her teachers, but that more than anything it felt good to do.

“Justice is learning at a young age that it’s important to help,” her dad Greg said.

And helped she has. In addition to this most recent project, Justice has also cut her hair for the Relay for Life, she shops each year for the Angel Tree, and she spent time this Christmas helping at the family business, AG Valley Foods, to earn money to give to a family in need.

Pointing to her lower back, she said, “I really hope my parents will let me grow my hair to about here so I can cut it off for someone who needs a wig.”

If she could give any advice to other kids about volunteering, Justice said she would tell them that even if it seems a bit scary to get started, doing good things helps people in a big way.

“I’d tell them that doing it would make a family or a child really happy.”

Cougar triplets snapped on wildlife cam

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff After skiing and grooming the trails at Nipika Mountain Resort for more than 30 years, owner and operator Lyle Wilson said he’s never seen anything like the sight his hidden wildlife camera captured.

The video begins with two cougars in the frame — one slightly larger cat stalks across the snow, while a smaller cougar sits down. The two alone are a breathtaking sight, but then not one, but two more of the slinky felines meander into the shot, following the larger cougar.

Presumably a mother with nearly grown triplets, the rare sight was all caught thanks to one of six infrared wildlife cameras Lyle has set up around his cross-country ski mecca down Settler’s Road, Nipika Mountain Resort.

After a skier spotted two of the cougars, Lyle set up a camera in an area he thought they might travel. After three weeks of waiting, he was rewarded with the stunning video.

Lyle, his wife Dianne, and their son Steve run the resort, which has 50 kilometres of groomed trails and sits in the middle of the Cross-River Canyon rec site. They began putting up the cameras mostly out of curiosity, and have since become hooked on the amazing wildlife footage they catch.

The Wilsons have collected between 6,000-8,000 images and videos from the cameras of everything from bears, bobcats, wolves, elk and cougars, to cheeky crosscountry skiers flashing some skin to the lens.

The Wilsons compile the range of images (minus the mischievous skiers!) into informative presentations for their guests to enjoy. The slide shows really capture the true range of animals and the ecological balance that is present at Nipika, Lyle said.

“It’s beautiful to have all this stuff going. It’s a really neat way to entertain guests through appreciation of wildlife. The more you introduce that kind of stuff to people, the more interest they have.”

The trails at Nipika are in a non-motorized, nonshooting area, which Lyle said helps both humans and

wildlife feel more at home.

Even though the animals that occasionally cross Nipika’s trails often punch through the perfectlygroomed tracks, Lyle said he’d rather groom more often than chase the wildlife away.

He also acknowledged that he will likely lose a bit of business from people who are scared of using the trails, but that most people find the presence of such a diverse cross-section of wildlife exciting and interesting.

“To the majority of people it adds an element of interest,” he said. “For us, it adds a lot of excitement from an environmental perspective.”

Council briefs Canal Flats, February 13th • The Canal Flats fire department is desperately in need of a new emergency services building, the village council heard at their regular meeting on February 13th.

The cost for a new building could come in at around $600,000, said fire chief Stuart Moore, who also requested a wage increase for volunteers. With multiple problems highlighted by a recent Worksafe B.C. inspection, the current building is barely usable and does not have the capacity to hold the department’s equipment and vehicles, Mr. Moore explained. The village will discuss the request at the upcoming budget meetings in coming weeks.

Invermere, February 14th • Council carried a motion to award Opus International Consulting a contract for the completion of a comprehensive downtown parking strategy for a fee of almost $33,500. A comprehensive parking strategy for the downtown area became a strategic priority with the previous council while moving forward with the Community Enhancement Plan, explained Rory Hromadnik, Director of Development Services.

A major component of the plan is to create a downtown celebration square in a rejuvenated Cenotaph, which could eliminate some existing parking. To address these lost spaces, and to help develop a long-term parking strategy, the past council decided to tender a request for proposals for a comprehensive parking study, to as-

sess and address current and future parking needs.

Mayor Gerry Taft said that he would also like to see some direction regarding major events that require portions of downtown streets to be closed, as the parking congestion it creates is a public safety issue. Councillor Spring Hawes added that she would like to see some attention paid to accessibility strategies. The money for the study will come out of the town’s parking fund.

• Council carried a motion to award Focus Corporation a contract for the completion of a comprehensive business park plan. The plan is to address storm water management, multi-use access options, improved signage, lighting, safety and some landscaping on industrial roads 1, 2, 3 and 4, plus Panorama Drive, for a fee of $33,600.

The need for a study was realized through meetings between council and business park owners, said Rory Hromadnik, Director of Development Services, as the road surfaces are deteriorating rapidly due to an insufficient strategy to deal with ground water and freezing and thawing events. The district had approved capital road improvements of $439,675 to take place from 2011-2018, but after meeting with business owners decided to redirect approximately $30,000 to undertake comprehensive engineering plans before going ahead with roadwork.

Councillor Spring Hawes spoke in support of the motion, saying that this issue is a priority for her as the business owners in that area do not get a lot of attention but are a major tax base and employ a large amount of people.

The Village of Canal Flats has been awarded more than $300,000 to reduce the risk of forest fires by clearing some of the shrubbery and other fuel around the town site.

With a budget of $5,000 per hectare, the treatment will include removal of vegetation and lowlying branches to reduce the risk of fire spreading along the ground and up into the canopies of trees, said consultant Greg Dubois.

The total project cost is almost $400,000, 75 per cent of which is being provided to Canal Flats by the provincial government. The remaining quarter of costs, around $82,000, must be met by the village.

“Brian [Woodward, village Chief Administrative Officer] did ask about ways to reduce the cost to the village,” said Mr. Dubois during his presentation to council regarding fuel management. “We have a few different options.”

The first option to keep the price tag down is through in-kind contributions of equipment or labour to pay off part of the cost. Additionally, the village has the choice of billing out labour, which is not really a viable option in a small community like

Canal Flats, Mr. Dubois said.

The best chance of cost-cutting would be to try and generate some revenue through logging and selling some timber from the areas where fuel reduction is to take place, he suggested.

“There’s some opportunity through logging sales; it’s possible a little bit of timber could be logged and sold,” Mr. Dubois said, adding that he was unsure if there is enough timber to cover the full amount.

The question of removing the debris created by the clearing and thinning was also raised. Mr. Dubois suggested that council investigate the possibility of an arrangement with the local Tembec mill for removal and disposal of material, an issue complicated by the recent Canfor purchase of the site.

Another possibility is burning slash piles, which can only be undertaken at certain times of the year and requires favourable weather conditions.

“In terms of funding we could start clearing tomorrow, but we need to fix the goalposts and, of course, find somebody to do the work,” Mr. Dubois explained.

The funding for the project has a two-year expiry date, meaning work must be completed, at the latest,

by January 31st, 2014.

Village staff are working with Mr. Dubois to determine how and when to proceed with the work.

Lake plan moves forward Submitted by the Regional District of East Kootenay Following three open houses and preliminary discussions with community groups and stakeholders, the Regional District of East Kootenay is moving forward with the next steps in the implementation of the Lake Windermere Management Plan.

“The board has asked staff to draft new regulations for Lake Windermere,” said Area F Director Wendy Booth. “As part of this process, we have also asked for additional public consultation to ensure people have the opportunity to learn about the proposed regulations and share their thoughts and opinions.”

Based in part on the input already received, the new regulations will include more focused environmental protection guidelines than was recommended in the LWMP, and general regulations for the siting and size of foreshore structures.

“This will include the establishment of Development Permit Areas in the sections of shoreline marked as orange or red in the Shoreline Management Guidelines,” explained Director Booth.

“These are areas that have been identified as being environmentally sensitive. Establishing a Development Permit Area in these zones will help ensure these environmental values are considered if development is being proposed.”

A Development Permit Area is a set of development guidelines pertaining to a specific area, and development objectives which require applicants to have a development permit prior to moving forward with certain types of work. This creates an opportunity to review proposed developments to ensure they comply with the policies and objectives of the Official Community Plan or Management Plan, such as environmental guidelines.

In addition to the Development Permit Area, the board has asked staff to prepare surface water zoning regulations to create a uniform set of development standards for in-water structures.

“The water zoning will focus only on managing water structures like docks, buoys, diving platforms and marinas. The RDEK is not proposing any regulations or restrictions on recreational boating,” stresses Booth.

Once prepared, the draft regulations will be presented to the public, community associations, First Nations, and other stakeholders for further input and comment.

The Regional District of East Kootenay will be distributing a newsletter in the coming weeks, and hopes to begin the next round of public consultation in June.

Connor gone, but Mexican building project lives on

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff For many years, Connor Vanderveen struggled with the effects of Hunter’s Syndrome. On October 10th, Connor passed away at age 15, but his family has pledged to continue with the fundraising efforts in Connor’s name that they have worked tirelessly on for many years.

Connor’s grandparents, Peter and Teena Oudman are familiar faces to the valley, as they spend part of their year living in Radium.

They, and Connor’s parents, Geraldine and Jerry Vanderveen, have held a Mexican Fiesta fundraiser at Radium Valley Vacation Resort for the past six years to raise money for Casa Connor, a charitable project in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, that is working to build a 10,000 sq. ft. facility for the therapy of 120 physically disabled children.

The project broke ground this past July, helped

along with the $7,600 raised at the last Radium dinner.

The land the facility is being built on was donated, and the architect works for free. Currently nine people are working on the walls for the ground level, but there is not enough money to complete the entire facility.

Peter and Teena will not be able to host the fundraiser in Radium this year, but they will continue their fundraising efforts in Calgary and welcome anyone who wishes to help in any way to contact them at oudmanp@hotmail.com.

“We will never forget your support,” Peter and Teena said. “If you would like to be part of this project, we invite you to come to Calgary for the fundraiser in September.”

Although their grandson is no longer with them, Teena and Peter said they will work to remember him through the Casa Connor project.

“We are very thankful that he does not suffer any longer but we do miss him very much.”

Skijoring is far from boring

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff If you want to catch Raija Easterbrook these days, you’ll have to “hike up.”

The Finnish-born Invermere resident has recently embarked on a journey through the world of skijoring, a sport that is closely related to dog sledding, but instead of a sled, she uses cross-country skis and is pulled by a team of two champion sled dogs.

Ms. Easterbrook moved to the valley from Manitoba in 1997, and being an avid cross country skier she instantly fell in love with the area. She competed in a number of friendly loppets, but found that she just wasn’t able to go as fast as she wanted to, so she started looking into other ways to power her winter fun.

At first, she tried to get her dog, Olympia, to pull her around on her skis, but the pooch wouldn’t do it, even when offered hot dogs from the back of a snowmobile. Ms. Easterbrook didn’t give up, and began looking into actual sled dogs.

“I rented some dogs from Aaron Peck who did the dogsled tours at Panorama.

He thought I was totally nuts, and suggested I try one dog first, because he was scared for my safety.

“I said, ‘No, I want two,’ and after I tried it with two really good lead dogs I absolutely loved it,” Ms. Easterbrook said.

This began a fairly lengthy search, and about a year later she had her team, made up of two lead dogs, Ash and MÜsti, from the world famous Knudsen and Streeper kennels.

With her team complete in November of this year, Ms. Easterbrook began competing in races as a pro, and has achieved two first-place finishes in her first two races.

“I went in three races last year and placed third, which proved to me I could do it. There are usually a lot of competitions around here when there is enough snow. So far this year I have raced in Elkford and Winnipeg,” she said.

The most recent race, held in Winnipeg on February 11th – 12th, allowed Ms. Easterbrook to spend some time with

her daughter, Paula, who also competed in the race with her own dogs.

Paula, who still lives in Manitoba, came in first in the novice category, and Ms. Easterbrook took top spot in the pro division.

“I went out there early to help my daughter with her dogs. It was a great experience and I am so glad she is picking up the sport. It’s a great way to spend the day outside,” Ms. Easterbrook said.

Due to lack of snow in a lot of areas, there are only two more races scheduled this year that Ms. Easterbrook is looking to compete in. She commented that the prize money isn’t much, but it helps cover the cost of travel and accommodation, which allows her to flex her competitive spirit in a sport she has fallen in love with.

This summer Ms. Easterbrook hopes to teach some Skijoring clinics, using bikes or scooters during the snow-free summer months. She emphasized that the sport is a really great way to give yourself and your dogs some exercise, as the skijorer is not stationary, but must skate-ski in order to keep up the pace.

“It’s a great way to spend time with your dog and really bond with it, and you don’t have to have a champion puller to do it casually. I couldn’t imagine my life without this. It’s my reason for getting up in the morning,” she said.

With her championship team, Ms. Easterbrook noted that she has reached top speeds of around 46 kilometres per hour, and can maintain a speed of 40 kilometres per hour if she works hard behind the dogs.

So if you see Ms. Easterbrook out on the lake, don’t take it personally if she zips right by. Once she’s done, however, she is always happy to answer questions about the strange sport she is single-handedly introducing to the Invermere area.

“I don’t usually stop when people come up to me because the dogs can’t get used to visiting while they’re running.

They need to stay focused. I don’t mind other dogs coming up as long as they don’t attack. And I want people to know I always go pick up their poop once I’m done on the lake.”

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Line Creek Operations Phase II Project

Open House and Invitation to Comment Teck Coal Limited (Proponent) is proposing to expand its existing Line Creek Operations (LCO) by developing two new mining areas, referred to as Burnt Ridge North and Mount Michael (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located approximately 22 km northeast of Sparwood in southeastern B.C. immediately north of the existing Line Creek mine. The proposed Project would provide an estimated aggregate total of 59 million metric tonnes of clean coal and would extend overall mine life by approximately 18 years.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent has now submitted its application (Application) to obtain an environmental assessment certificate which is required before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project.

s obituary s Nancy Tegart October 28th, 1912 – February 10, 2012 Happy trails – Til we meet again, sweet lady.

Nancy Lee Tegart passed away peacefully at Columbia House longterm care facility in Invermere, BC. Born in Cirencester, England, and raised in Crediton, England, Nancy moved with her mother and sisters to the Columbia Valley in 1927 where the Lee family stayed until 1936.

In the spring of 1942, Nancy signed up with the RCAFWD. She served overseas until discharged in August 1946.

After demobilization, Nancy worked at a variety of jobs, but found time to get her pilot’s licence. She married Lloyd Tegart on May 5th, 1958 and they settled at Hidden Valley Ranch in 1961. After Lloyd’s passing in May 1967, Nancy stayed at the Hidden Valley for four more years before selling and making the Olde Corby Place Ranch in Windermere her home base.

Nancy led an active life and was always willing to try something new.

Animals played a vital role in her happiness and she found a way to surround herself with as many four-legged friends as she could. She was an active volunteer in a number of local organizations including the Saddle Club and the East Kootenay Environmental Society (now Wildsight). Nancy had a strong faith in God and shared generously with many charities.

Nancy is pre-deceased by her brother Kenneth; her parents, Dorothy and Arnold Lee; and her sister Mary. She is survived by her sister Joan Jones, niece Susan (Brian) Henley and great-nephew Thomas Henley.

She is also survived by her first cousin, Dorothy Brown and family.

Nancy will be remembered by many friends, particularly Lloyd’s nephew, Peter Tegart, who became her partner in the Olde Corby Place Ranch; her birthday buddy/niece, Sharon Tegart; and her loving caregiver, Sharon Wass. Nancy was interred at the Invermere Cemetery on February 16th at 11 a.m. A celebration of life is planned for later in the spring.

s obituary s Hazel Mary Lunn (nee Langdon) October 14, 1925 to February 10, 2012 Hazel passed away quietly in her sleep, with family by her side, on February 10, 2012 at the age of 86.

Born on October 14, 1925 in Northern Arm, Newfoundland, to Caleb and Ethel Langdon, Hazel was one of five children. She moved west with her husband Hazen (Buster) Lunn and raised their family in Fernie and Invermere. Buster passed away in 2002 but there was not a moment in the last 10 years she didn’t think about and miss him.

Now, she is safe in his embrace once again. Also waiting patiently are her parents, two brothers, Robert and Eric Langdon, sister, Maxine Stratton, and great-nephew, Michael Henderson.

Hazel will be greatly missed by her brother Oscar Langdon (Jessie) of Hantsport, Nova Scotia; her three children, Larry Lunn, Leonard Lunn and Stephanie Lewis (David); her niece, Shannon Stratton; numerous other nieces and nephews; her 6 grandchildren, Robin van Eck (Arie), Melanie Abbott (Cory), Crystal Zielinski (Rob Adams), Darren Zielinski (Chelsea McNaughton), Timothy and Benjamin Lunn; and five great grandchildren, Riley, Gavin, Julianne, Jordyn and Declan.

For anyone who would like to pay their respects, a graveside service will be held at Mount View Cemetery on February 20, 2012 at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow at Lakeview Manor. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Hazel’s name to the Invermere Public Library would be greatly appreciated.

Turn to Christ during Lent

By Katherine Hough Interim Pastor in Charge Christ Church Trinity I wrote about discipleship in my last column, a theme I rarely tire of since it is fundamental to Christianity.

Scripture is full of stories of the heartache and blessings of discipleship — Elisha carrying on after Elijah is ‘taken up into heaven,’ the men and women carrying the gospel to the ends of the known world trying to live the good news rather than simply preaching it (more hearts have turned to God through example than listening to Christian ‘talking heads’ exhorting people to follow Christ but not living the welcome inclusivity demonstrated by Jesus).

Discipleship can be difficult when we get caught up in judging other Christians. In 1Cor. 4-5 Paul reminds us that it is the Lord who judges us. How wonderful if we could shed the judgement and “I’m right” attitude in favour of the acceptance that is key to our discipleship!

And if we are having trouble being the loving, wel-

coming Christians we are called to be? I have the perfect remedy: Lent!

On February 22nd Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, a time to acknowledge where we failed as loving beings in the past year and turn back to Christ.

We burn the palm crosses from Palm Sunday and mark our foreheads with their ash in remembrance that “from dust we have come and to dust we shall return.” It is a time to remember that we are imperfect but that God loves us despite that.

Lent is a special season, 40 days to reflect on our walk with Christ and our discipleship over the past year.

It is a time for repentance, prayer, fasting (giving up something special to remind us that discipleship is not lightly undertaken) and especially for charity: to be sacrificially generous to those less fortunate.

Lent prepares us to walk with Jesus to the cross on Good Friday and beyond it on Easter morning. Lent is a time to shed our old ‘skin’ of bad habits and embrace a renewed discipleship. May it be so!

This is my last column as the valley welcomes the Rev. Laura Hermakin as the new incumbent at the Windermere Valley Shared Ministry (Anglican & United Church). It has been my pleasure and privilege to share my thoughts with you and I wish you all God Bless!
