Susan Neal Theatre Lobby Dedication

The lobby outside of our Schoedinger Theatre was dedicated in honor of the late Susan Neal on January 29, 2022, prior to the middle school production of “Matilda the Musical Jr.”

The program included remarks from Susan’s family, a formal dedication of the lobby and a musical performance. Afterwards, a celebration of life took place in the Morris Hall Art Gallery with hor d’oeuvres, beverages and the chance to for colleagues, family and friends of Susan and their family commemorate an extraordinary teacher and friend.

Susan began her Academy career as a kindergarten assistant in 1994 and then spent over two decades teaching music, drama, step and stomp, study skills and creative expressions to middle-schoolers until her retirement in 2016. She directed the middle school musicals from 1995’s “The Wizard of Oz” to 2016’s “The Little Mermaid” and the upper school musicals from “Guys and Dolls” in 2008 to “The Addams Family” in 2015. Her husband Scott re-retired last year after briefly returning to campus as a part-time art teacher and now resides in Athens. They have two daughters who both graduated from Columbus Academy: Jenny ’97 and Miranda ’99.

Schoedinger Theatre Renovations

Renovations to Schoedinger Theatre at Columbus Academy were completed in the fall of 2019 after the initial plan to update the facility was announced in September 2018 by Head of School Melissa Soderberg. Schoedinger Theatre now features a balcony which helped increase overall seating capacity to around 550 (about 100 more seats than the original theatre), all new seats throughout, and improved lighting and sound, complete with acoustical panels.
