Thanks for taking the time to get to know more about the New Projects MFA program at CCAD. Since 2010 our students and faculty have built a unique graduate community that is completely focused on the work you want to do regardless of media or area. It’s a community that is supportive and rigorous, demanding yet compassionate. It’s a community that believes boundaries between media are porous and that unexpected things happen in those in-between spaces. A community where students from very different backgrounds talk to each other about their projects and are provided with the facilities and resources to create, experiment and explore. A place where late night studio conversations happen between graphic novelists, animators and painters, and sculptors work with industrial designers and photographers. We understand that artists and designers need the skills and knowledge to sustain their practice and be successful after graduate school. This can mean different things to different people but the ability to articulate, organize and think clearly about one’s work, time, resources and career are vital. Our project based format and emphasis on professionalism prepare artists and designers for what is next. It works. Our alumni are receiving grants, residencies, teaching positions, exhibitions and jobs. They are fluent, savvy and literate across multiple disciplines and are building a more creative community in Columbus and across the country. OVERVIEW NEW PROJECTS PROGRAM CCAD’s New Projects program presents a unique and exciting curriculum that pursues creative excellence through the development of projects rather than the study of specific media. It is based on the belief that an artist’s studio practice is best learned through the quest to complete a defined exploration. The program stresses studio mastery, individual scholarship, and real world practices such as organization, communication, clarity of thought, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills. The MFA program educates artists who are capable of taking on interesting artistic endeavors and who also have the skills and talents to make their vision manifest.

DEGREE TYPE Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. The MFA is recognized as the highest degree in the creative practice of visual art. It is earned through rigorous scholarship in both academic seminars and studio practice. 10

ACCREDITATION The college and the graduate program are accredited by both the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

STUDIO PROJECTS Semesters 1, 2

A project-based, individually mentored course that is focused on planning, production, and presentation of independently proposed, semester-long projects. Students develop a project proposal and work with individual faculty to realize the semester’s project. Emphasis is on one-on-one contact and feedback with the chosen faculty.

GRADUATE SEMINAR Semesters 1– 4

The graduate critique seminar required of all matriculated MFA students. Graduate students meet weekly for presentations, critiques, and discussions of current in-progress projects. Various topics and visiting artists will be introduced. Students are expected to take a strong leadership role. 16

GRADUATE ART HISTORY SEMINAR Semesters 1, 2

DIGITAL CULTURE Semester 1

Digital Culture redefines and reintroduces presentation methods as both physical technology and conceptual application. Students will experience the technology already present in their lives as a viable delivery system for their work. Students will gain awareness to a wide variety of delivery tools and an understanding of how to leverage these tools in both the classroom and in the marketplace GRADUATE PROGRESS ASSESSMENT Semester 2

During the last weeks of your second semester, you will be required to complete the Graduate Progress Assessment, which consists of a written component and participating in a group exhibition/event. UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES Timing Varies

All courses offered at CCAD are available to graduate students subject to availability. Courses are taken on an audit basis and arranged through your studio faculty mentors.

THE LEARNING BLOG One of the unique aspects of the New Projects curriculum is its emphasis on communication and success. The faculty believes that it is important for today’s artists to be able to explain their research, document their influences, and engage in meaningful dialogue about their work. Students are required to keep a learning blog for the duration of the program. This site serves as the documentation of their explorations, thoughts, dialogues, and feelings as they move through the curriculum.


PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES Semester 3

Oriented to individual student needs and goals, this course addresses the tools and skill sets students will need for success after graduation. Issues of entrepreneurialism, marketing, and leadership are covered along with the practical application of creative/business partnership overall. OFF-CAMPUS EXPERIENCE Timing Varies

The Off-Campus Mentoring program is designed to offer alternative critical insight, mentoring, and/or experience. A list of artists, scholars, and organizations that have agreed to work with CCAD MFA students on an individual basis is available. Contact with off-campus mentors can be real, virtual, or some combination. *Please refer to pg 28 for a list of off campus experiences our students have participated in. THESIS PROJECTS I & II Semester 3, 4

Thesis Projects I focuses on the initial thesis project proposal, development, and implementation. Students will choose their thesis advisor, develop their thesis proposal, and complete their pre-thesis review. Emphasis will be placed on the highest professional standards of development, planning, and execution. Thesis Projects II focuses on the final thesis project development and exhibition. Emphasis will be placed on originality and the highest professional standards of development and execution.

CERTIFICATE OF COLLEGE ART INSTRUCTION Elective Course of Study

This internal certificate program recognizes successful completion of designated coursework and a series of teaching internships focused on the teaching of studio art at a postsecondary level. It is an elective program and is not required for the MFA degree.

TEACHING METHODS GRNP5071 3 credits Semester 2

A weekly graduate seminar focused on teaching, planning, and assessment of college-level studio art classes. Taken in conjunction with Graduate Teaching Internship, GRNP5072. TEACHING INTERNSHIP I & II GRPN5072/3 0 credits (paid); Semester 2,3

The Teaching Internship provides a strong experiential foundation for teaching studio art at the college level. Students are matched with regular CCAD faculty in appropriate courses to both observe and assist with course delivery. Upon successful completion of the teaching internship, you can apply to be a Graduate Teaching Associate (instructor of record). If you have significant teaching experience, you may be exempt from the internship requirement at the discretion of the program director.

I don’t think it has the wild uninhibited personality of some art schools that glorifies the eccentric, and to be honest, that isn’t a realistic mode to work in for most professional settings. There is no doubt that can be found at CCAD but much of the personality is geared towards professionalism. KIMBERLY I enrolled in CCAD’s MFA program first and foremost to grow as an artist. What I thought that meant initially and what that ended up being were vastly different and thankfully so.

Yes, the program enriched my life as an “artist” but what I found was my own path in defining what that enrichment meant for me. Thankfully, it was much more than merely material or academic. I dove into a greater depth of understanding myself, my surroundings, and my purpose.

PROJECT PROPOSAL TIPS

The curriculum of the New Projects MFA is project-based. Each student works on a personal project each semester, and this project forms the foundation of your work in the program.

As a key part of your application, please describe the first project you would like to undertake in the program. Be as clear and specific as possible. Although we request that your answers be in written form, we also like to view appropriate visual supporting materials. This could include websites, videos, images, audio recordings, or other materials. Your project proposal is judged not only on its creativity and originality but also on its clarity, organization, and presentation. Remember that your initial project needs to be completed in one semester, so scope and feasibility will be an issue.


ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING TOPICS IN YOUR PROJECT PROPOSAL:

Briefly and clearly describe the project, including: a short narrative about the work or research that has led you to this interest; visual documentation of your own or others’ work that has influenced this proposal. Discuss the historical, critical, or cultural contexts for and influences on your proposal. What media/methodology will your project involve? What resources (facilities/ instruction) do you anticipate needing? (What can CCAD offer you to complete your project?)
