Welcome to the New Columbus Weddings
*** When Monte Durham was the celebrity guest of the Columbus Weddings Show in 2018, the Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta star gave attendees a piece of advice that’s been stuck in my head since: When you start planning, grab an index card and write down the three words you want to describe your wedding. Distill all of your ideas down into those three concepts. Keep it in your wallet or purse. When the time comes to make a decision—and there will be many such times—refer back to that index card and ask yourself, “Does this choice reflect my three words?” If it doesn’t, you’ll know you need to find something else. While planning the massively complicated undertaking of redesigning a magazine—one that had largely the

same structure for 20 years—art director Alyse Pasternak and I used Durham's tip to guide us. The three words we chose? Elegant. Upscale. Informative. We think we’ve hit the mark in this issue. That’s thanks in part to the extra weeks of production we gained by shifting publication from June to August to help our advertisers, most of whom saw their incomes reduced or eliminated as an effect of Gov. Mike DeWine’s stayhome orders—a topic we explore on Page 20. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t highlight the insane amount of work that Alyse put in during the redesign. No detail was too small for her careful consideration, a fact I only realized when she began showing me options for everything from color palettes to fonts to dingbat symbols at the end of each story. Because of her, the magazine you hold in your hands is so beautiful. We made less subtle changes, too, shifting the magazine’s focus from article-heavy content to one that’s full of inspiring photos, a few choice stories with helpful information and our newly expanded listings. Now, in addition to our nearly comprehensive roundup of ceremony and reception spaces—formerly the Reception Guide, renamed the Venue Guide (Page 63)—we have The Essentials, a curated list of partner vendors and editorial recommendations for virtually every vendor category (Page 85). Perhaps the biggest change we’ve made is how we accept submissions. For the first time ever, Columbus Weddings is inviting local newlyweds to submit their wedding photos for consideration directly at cbuswedmag.com/submit. We made this change for a lot of reasons, the biggest of which is that it empowers us more than ever before to showcase the beautiful diversity of Central Ohio. That change is in effect as of this issue, which features photos from 31 weddings submitted by the couples who hosted them. Don’t miss our new Real Weddings features on Page 49! Finally, we’re excited to announce the winners of the 2020 Best of Columbus Weddings readers’ poll, which we launched late last year. Learn about the winners and see a stunning celebratory photo shoot featuring many of them on Page 27. Wishing you health, safety and happiness,

Back in January, I had a draft of this letter all typed up. It, like our usual June distribution and so many wedding plans, had to be scrapped when COVID-19 forced the world to reconsider how it does … well, everything. As I write this in late July, the country is still grappling with the ongoing pandemic, not to mention the issues highlighted during the summer’s Black Lives Matter protests and a painful economic recession. Yes, the world certainly is a different place now than what we thought it’d be when 2020 began. And it’s made each of us different, too. For instance, I stopped wearing my wedding ring during “quarantine.” I am accustomed to removing my engagement ring at the end of a day in my “get comfy at home” routine. But one day in March, for a reason I can’t remember, I replaced the band my husband, Matt, had placed on my finger with a cheap silicone surrogate. I haven’t worn my wedding set in four months now. The diamonds, like heat styling my hair or carefully coordinating an outfit, are vanity. Much like a wedding, it’s really more for other people than it is for me. Sure, your wedding is about you and your partner—but the accoutrements (the food and DJ and Chiavari chairs) are for your guests. Marriage in isolation, like personal vanity, is stripped bare. But we will rejoin the world someday. I will don my rings and makeup. You will have your wedding cake—and you’ll eat it, too. It’ll be delicious, regardless of whether you’re enjoying it on your actual wedding day or the belated celebration of it. Until then, we wait. And while we wait, we dream and we plan.

Have Your Back
As far as we’re concerned, back jewelry is still in. You just have to keep it simple and elegant, as Christin Mercedes did with this lariat from Etsy shop ThreeLayers for her Aug. 31, 2019, wedding to Mike Mercedes.
Leather & Lace
The chilly temps of winter weddings mean that brides and bridesmaids often need an extra layer for those outdoor portraits. At Kyla and Theophilus Denanyoh’s Nov. 9, 2019, wedding, Kyla ditched common options, like fur wraps and cashmere shawls, in favor of a rebellious leather jacket. A week prior, Rachel and Cole Bowling’s wedding featured a similar fashion: Rachel’s leather jacket was customized with her new last name and a floral motif.

A Personal Touch
Everyone wants their wedding to be a reflection of their personality. Keely Flaherty and Nathan Harar went all-in with the idea when creating the centerpieces for their Sept. 13, 2019, reception at High Line Car Hwouse. Their guest tables featured unpretentious displays paying homage to the couple’s favorite movies and TV shows, including “The Princess Bride,” Parks and Recreation, Buffy, Star Wars, Gilmore Girls and more.

Rose-Colored Everything
When Lydia Kemmerling attended the Columbus Weddings Show in 2018, she had the opportunity to chat with celebrity guest David Tutera during an audience Q&A session. A 20-year breast cancer survivor, Lydia wanted to incorporate the signature pink of breast cancer awareness into her upcoming wedding to Johnny Back. Five months later, on June 29, 2019, Lydia and Johnny’s wedding incorporated Tutera’s tips with pops of pink in the flowers, accessories and table linens.

Elyse and James Hopkins opted for an ultra-small wedding at Jorgensen Farms Oak Grove on April 5, 2020.
The Corona Effect The COVID-19 pandemic sent shockwaves through the wedding industry, leaving vendors scrambling to maintain their businesses.
It was the weekend of the Arnold Sports Festival, and Jan Kish knew that something was wrong. The owner of Jan Kish-La Petite Fleur, a bakery in Worthington, had been hired by a New Hampshire couple who intended to get married at the annual fitness event. But in early March, days before the expo and accompanying wedding were set to take place, the Ohio Department of Health issued a directive to limit spectators— the first in a long list of coronavirus-prompted changes, cancellations and postponements throughout the city and state. “The wedding went on, and it got beamed over 83 countries,” Kish says. “We went ahead and did the cake, but all of the spectators—all of that was shut down. I think they had like 20 people for their reception.” The news came as a disappointment, but things were about to get a whole lot stranger. Kish had 20

been hired to create a cake for a wedding at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens the weekend following the sports festival. The guest list numbered 250, but when further orders restricting businesses and gatherings came from state officials, the event had to be scuttled. “Friday, it gets shut down,” says Kish, who ended up serving the cake to guests at the couple’s hotel. “They had a brunch for about 40 people.” During the early months of the coronavirus outbreak, Kish—like others in the Columbus wedding industry—was forced to confront a new reality in which countless ceremonies and receptions were reimagined or simply rescheduled. “It’s been devastating,” says Berlyn Martin, owner of Berlyn Events. “There are companies that were projecting millions of dollars in revenue that are now hoping to break $100,000 [this year].”

“In April, it started getting kind of real,” says Nicole Dixon of Nicole Dixon Photographic. “Things started to change for couples, whether they were deciding to go small-scale and move forward or postpone.” Dixon photographed one wedding that was scaled down to include the couple and just three guests. “They had a ceremony and a first dance on a sidewalk,” says Dixon, who adds that the overwhelming majority of couples have simply kicked the can ahead in hopes of a post-coronavirus future. In the meantime, an industry dependent on couples saying “I do” has had to brace for a long and likely challenging climb back. For some businesses, that has meant supplementing the usual wedding work with side jobs. Kish has returned to her roots as a former restaurant owner by preparing gourmet food for pick-up service. “You’ve got to keep the boat afloat somehow,” Kish says. For her part, Dixon shifted from shooting weddings to photographing families and high school seniors. Other businesses can’t adjust as easily, including the 13 to 17 DJs who regularly work wedding gigs with D&M DJ Entertainment. From mid-March to early June, wedding work essentially vanished. “I’ve rescheduled close to 80 weddings,” says owner David Kurtz, who remains concerned about the practicality of playing large events even as bookings return. For some businesses, bookings just didn’t return quickly enough. One of the most in-demand venues in the region, Dock580, announced in June that it and sister rooftop restaurant/event venue Juniper would not be reopening. In a letter to clients, owner Steve Rayo cited the economic hardship of statewide shutdowns as the key factor leading to the venues’ closures. “The event and hospitality industry as a whole has been decimated by the coronavirus,” Rayo wrote. “Our business was not spared ... the ongoing restrictions placed on our business as a result of the coronavirus cannot be overcome, and the losses that our business has sustained are too great. As hard as it is, all of our forecasts show that continuing with the business is simply not feasible.” Vendors that have managed to muddle through have not done so without their own hardships. As a business dependent on in-person shopping, Worthington Jewelers is reckoning with how to serve brides and grooms during the pandemic. Since re-opening its doors in early May, the store has instituted new measures to ensure cleanliness. “If you want to even just get your ring sized, to
take your ring in, we’ve got to first sanitize it,” says owner Bob Capace. “Then you try on the little sizing rings to get the right size, and then we’ve got to sanitize those.” Capace laid off a majority of his staff of 12 during the pandemic but plans to bring all workers back. “Up to March 15, we were well beating our record year of last year,” he says. “The rest of March fell off significantly, and then April was just a horrible financial experience.” But Capace feels lucky to be providing what he considers an essential element of weddings, no matter how scaleddown they may become in the months ahead. “If my wedding was in June, maybe I just get married in my backyard,” he says. “I’m not doing my big shindig wedding with the cakes and the DJs and the flowers.” Some members of the local wedding industry have raised concerns about longterm prospects of the industry. For example, Martin of Berlyn Events says that as couples reschedule ceremonies from 2020 to 2021, fewer dates remain available for newly engaged couples to get married in 2021. The industry is still coming to grips with the ripple effect. “When you think of what we sell, we sell available dates for our services,” says Martin, who spearheaded a Change.org petition asking Gov. Mike DeWine to form an advisory group to reopen the wedding/ special event industry. “The dates that were eaten up by coronavirus, through no one’s fault, are gone.” Martin also founded Ohio Event Safety, which she describes as “a collective of like-minded professionals united with the focus of finding a reopening solution that is realistic, sustainable and safe.” In April, Tanya Hartman, the owner of Gilded Social, a bridesmaid dress shop
in Downtown Columbus, filed a lawsuit against Dr. Amy Acton, then the director of the Ohio Department of Health, arguing that businesses deemed nonessential should have the means to prove they could be run in a safe manner. “The last two weeks of March and into April, we had to cancel probably 40 appointments,” says Hartman, adding that the majority of couples who canceled have not yet rescheduled because their weddings won’t happen this year. Although Gilded Social has opened back up as part of a larger wave of re-openings, Hartman describes a perilous few months and an uncertain future. “I just expanded my shop in November, and I just re-signed this lease in November—a brand-new lease that there was absolutely zero way to pay,” says Hartman, who, fearful of another shutdown if coronavirus cases spike again, has not dropped her legal action. “We need to ensure that we have an ability to appeal a decision when your business is shut down,” she says. Dixon notes hesitancy among couples reentering the wedding fold: As the photographer sees it, engaged couples are rescheduling warily, while couples who intend to get married as planned are proceeding with maximum caution. “I think there’s just that unknown of when things are going to change for the better,” Dixon says. In spite of all of the uncertainty, industry leaders are sure that celebrations of the union of two people will survive in one form or another. “There will always be that want to have a party—to have a celebration with all of your friends,” Kish says. “I don’t see that changing.” «
Dock580 and its sister venue, Juniper, are among the economic casualties of the pandemic.

Wish Upon a Wedding beneficiaries Courtney Maki and Tess Dawson at their wedding
Wishes Granted A national charity with ties to Columbus helps make dreams come true for couples facing serious health issues.
Imagine stepping into a warehouse filled with wall-towall wedding dresses and knowing that you could pick out any dress you want—for free. The dreamlike scenario became a reality in summer 2019 for Courtney Maki and Tess Dawson as recipients of Wish Upon A Wedding, which grants weddings and vow renewals to couples facing serious or life-altering health issues. Dawson and Maki met online six years ago and were pen pals for weeks, “each of us slowly telling our life stories and deepest secrets,” Maki says. As the relationship grew serious, so did Dawson’s health problems, eventually leading to a stage 4 metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. Even so, their love remained steadfast, and they continued to contemplate marriage. “We quickly realized that it would take quite a while to save up enough money, and neither of us knew how much time she had left,” Maki says. Funding a wedding seemed nearly impossible—until a friend told them about Wish Upon A Wedding. “It’s amazing to watch a couple who is consumed with an illness and give them one 22

day when they don’t have to think about anything and just celebrate their day,” says program director Kasey Conyers, who oversees WUAW’s Columbus-based wedding gown warehouse. Earlier this year, WUAW made its warehouse available to the public. Apparel ranges from wedding and bridesmaid dresses to cocktail attire, mother-of-the-bride ensembles and other formalwear. Dresses are donated by BHLDN and other West Coast wedding boutiques. Proceeds from warehouse dress sales benefit WUAW, which plans and covers the costs of the venue, video and photography, cake, officiant, music, catering, florist and more for up to 50 guests. “Neither of us would have even dreamed that they would give us our wedding dresses,” Maki says. “I was so psyched—like a kid in a candy shop.” Looking toward Dawson, who at the time of the interview has just finished a round of chemotherapy, she adds, “She looked so beautiful.” Dawson’s response: “I just wanted Courtney to be happy.”

“It just seemed that at every turn, they surpassed any expectations we could have had,” Maki says. “For some of our sickest couples, it’s almost a force of hope to get through the event,” says Conyers, who also owns Orchard Lane Flowers and Bliss Wedding & Event Design in Columbus. Because of the pandemic, the warehouse has curtailed its operating hours for scheduled consultations. It’s also selling sightunseen dress boxes to the public online. For $500, customers get three dresses based on their style, color and size preferences. Hand-picked by WUAW consultants, the dresses are a surprise when they arrive, Conyers explains, as the warehouse is not able to take requests for specific dresses. Since its inception about 10 years ago, WUAW has granted more than 150 wishes to deserving couples nationwide. “They plan down to the smallest detail ... you just need to arrive on your wedding day and everything is already taken care of,” Maki says. Their countryside wedding took place July 30, 2019, at The Mohicans in Glenmont, Ohio. Today, the couple lives in Mansfield, and Dawson travels to Columbus every few weeks for chemotherapy. «

HOT TREND
Claire and Jason Johnson opted for an intimate wedding in September 2019.
The Rise of the Micro-Wedding Making a big impact with a small event
They say good things come in small packages, but does that maxim extend to weddings? Many couples plan grand affairs packed with their closest family and friends, not to mention their parents’ friends, longtime neighbors, former teachers and even the bride’s second cousin twice removed. The coronavirus pandemic has led many couples to re-evaluate their priorities and scale back their plans. With concerns about large gatherings unlikely to abate any time soon, brides- and grooms-tobe are doubling down on a trend already prevalent prior to the pandemic: the micro-wedding. Micro-weddings usually take place in intimate settings and feature a stripped-down guest list. Worthington couple Claire and Jason Johnson, who were married last year at Due Amici in Downtown Columbus, went the micro route partly for practicality. “We looked at doing a bigger wedding,” Claire says. “We had a lot of family and friends that were 24

out of town. … We looked at a lot of venues and none of them really seemed right, so then we just decided we wanted to do something smaller.” Teena Parker, owner of Ampersand Flowers & Events in Worthington, attributes the rise of micro-weddings to couples’ budget concerns and a desire to narrow their guest lists to include only their closest circles. Minimal effects can make a large impression in smaller settings, she says. “Instead of having bridesmaids with huge bouquets, you can just do a little boutonniere or a little corsage for everyone,” Parker says. “You can just do some simple greenery and candlelight on the tables.” That doesn’t mean that micro-weddings can’t be indulgent, however. “You can still have incredible celebrations and have the freedom to spend more money on the things that really matter,” Parker says. “Go over the top with food and beverage, or the dress or the cake or whatever it is that’s most important to the couple.”

For their ceremony, Claire and Jason whittled down their guest list to 35 people, consisting of immediate family members— parents, siblings and their significant others—and close, local friends, mainly those in the actual wedding party. Using a private room at Due Amici, the couple replicated many of the traditional elements of a ceremony. By placing two long tables opposite each other, they created an aisle for Claire to walk down. “We still did a first dance,” she says. “We had floral arrangements done by a florist.” Because guests were already seated, everyone was in place when dinner was served; parents and siblings were seated up front. The crowd fanned out afterwards. “We went to another bar closer to [our] hotel and invited people to come there,” Claire says. “We didn’t have a DJ or dancing, but that’s really the only thing I would say we didn’t have.” The trade-off was worth it, as Jason says he got to spend quality time with his guests. “A common theme that I … have heard [about a traditional wedding day] is that people have said, ‘It was all a whirlwind,’” Jason says. “They just kind of bounced around.” By contrast, at his
“I remember every conversation I had with everybody [at my wedding]. We spent a weekend together.” —JASON JOHNSON wedding, “I remember every conversation I had with everybody. We spent a weekend together.” Even the Johnsons’ photographer, Benjamin Derkin of Derk’s Works Photography, felt more connected with the overall wedding. When Derkin photographs a micro-wedding, he finds that everyone is a bit more aware of his presence. “There are less people to hide behind,” Derkin says. “That gives me an opportunity to be a little bit more engaged with the people. … It gives me the ability to get a little bit closer, physically.” Predictably, micro-weddings have spiked in popularity during the pandemic. “We
had our first micro-wedding just 48 hours before the shelter-in-place was announced,” says Chelsie Smith, who co-owns Flat 51, a second-floor event space in German Village, along with Jen Brown. Yet the trend seems unlikely to abate— even if COVID-19 is eventually resolved with a vaccine or effective treatment. “Couples are realizing they don’t need the big, traditional wedding,” Brown says. “They are rewriting the book on what the entire wedding experience looks like.” “I still got to do everything that the wedding entails,” Claire Johnson says. “It was just on a smaller, I would say more manageable, scale.” «

hen we decided to redesign Columbus Weddings, one feature seemed like a given: We had to have a reader poll, in line with those of our sister magazines. Months of planning, researching, ballot-building and promoting later, we’re proud to present the results of the first-ever Best of Columbus Weddings. We populated the ballot with our favorite local vendors and our advertising partners, then set it loose into the public for voting. The result: dozens of vendors that have the seal of approval from the Columbus Weddings team and local newlyweds and engaged couples alike. In all, more than 5,500 people voted for their faves (though not every person voted in every category). You may notice that some categories have more than one winner. That’s because we decided, in the interest of showcasing as much local talent as possible, to award a tie to any vendor whose percentage of votes came within 1 percentage point of the top vote-getter. We’re already planning Best of Columbus Weddings for 2021; look for voting to open up with the release of our next issue in December 2020. Until then, enjoy learning more about the most popular vendors in the city this year below and by visiting cbuswedmag.com/Best2020, where you’ll find more in-depth profiles of each winner. —Emma Frankart Henterly

A song by indie Americana singer-songwriter Luke James Shaffer inspired a recent glamping photo shoot at Crockett’s Run in Hocking Hills, says shoot coordinator Reagan Canaday. “And this pair was so happy together / Marching to a different tune / Crazy like birds of a feather / They remind me of what love can do,” croons Shaffer in “A Fox & A Bird,” which explores an unlikely companionship that is made better by the differences each individual brings. —Emma Frankart Henterly

Foan Bridges & Ivan Davis BY PETER TONGUETTE PHOTOS BY DERK’S WORKS PHOTOGRAPHY Can a dating app result in everlasting happiness? In the case of Faon Bridges and Ivan Davis, the answer is a decisive “yes.” In 2015, Faon, a Columbus native, relocated to Chicago. On a whim one Saturday afternoon, she pulled up the OkCupid dating app. “I was bored,” Faon says. “I was just swiping left and right, and I guess I swiped the right way on him and he saw it.” Ivan, who was born in Chicago, had already been married and divorced. He wasn’t overly enthusiastic about embarking on a new relationship, but he was intrigued by the notification that popped up. “I was like, ‘Should I? No,’” Ivan remembers. “Then I looked again. I was like, ‘She’s cute. She’s really cute. I like her eyes.’” Thus the couple began their relationship. “Prior to our first date, we had a text conversation, and the text conversation went on for hours,” says Ivan, who also remembers a three-and-a-half-hour phone chat. Two years later, the couple visited the Chicago Botanic Garden, long a destination of interest for Faon, whose grandparents had owned a floral shop back home in Columbus. “I was thinking, ‘What would be a better setting than to propose there?’” Ivan says. “You’re surrounded by nature; you’re surrounded by flowers. It’s not a lot of people.” The couple chose an equally bucolic setting for their wedding: the Darby House in Galloway. “It’s secluded; it’s private; there were no power lines in the background,” says Ivan, referring to another site they viewed that was marred by unsightly views. For Faon, the reason for going home to get married was particularly personal: Her father, now deceased, was terminally ill with cancer at the time. “It was very important for him to be there and for him to be able to walk me down the aisle,” she says. He even was able to participate in the father-daughter dance for a few minutes. “My dad surprised me on the dance floor,” Faon says. The day was not without its missteps—for example, the zipper on Faon’s mother’s dress broke; the DJ played the couple’s first dance too quickly—but the couple came to embrace the quirks and glitches as part of the mosaic of the day. “The day is never going to go perfect, as you planned,” Faon says. “You just have to keep that open mind.” Sometimes, though, surprises can be good things. Having made up his mind that he wanted their photographer, Benjamin Derkin, to capture a photo of a deer or fawn on their wedding day (a tribute both to the rural surroundings and the pronunciation of Faon’s name), Ivan was shocked when his dream snapshot came to pass: As Derkin was driving the newlyweds back home, a family of deer bolted out of the blue. Best of all? The photographer got the shot. « 50

Megan Tuttle & Ashkan Salem BY BROOKE PRESTON | PHOTOS BY AMY ANN PHOTOGRAPHY When Megan Tuttle and Ashkan Salem first met at a birthday party in 2013, the stars weren’t yet aligned. Ashkan remembers, “We were both in separate relationships at the time, and did not think much of our encounter.” But once single and scrolling through Tinder a couple of years later, however, Megan and Ashkan remembered one another from that first brief interaction. They both swiped right for a brunch date of pancakes and mimosas in March 2015. “Ash even went in for the kiss on the first date!” Megan says. This time around, sparks flew. When Ashkan sent flowers to Megan at work, she told her coworker, “I’m going to marry this man.” The couple quickly realized this was more than a passing romance and were intentional about building time in their busy schedules to invest in their relationship over the next few years. Though Ashkan admits he isn’t the best at keeping secrets, he wanted to make sure that the proposal would be a happy surprise. He enlisted the help of the couple’s eventual wedding photographer Amy Tannenbaum, who they had grown to know through weddings of several family and friends, to capture the moment. When the evening arrived, Ashkan convinced Megan to enjoy an evening stroll at Bicentennial Park. Megan noticed Amy, so Ashkan acted as if Amy was there to 52

photograph another couple. After a little walk, Ashkan got down on one knee and proposed to Megan. However, he hadn’t managed to be as sneaky as he’d hoped. “As I proposed, Megan admitted to me that she knew of the proposal for a week!” he recalls. “Apparently as I was showing her something on my phone, she saw an email come through from Amy regarding the surprise proposal.” Regardless, the couple cherished the moment, and even shared a couple of beers with a wedding party who had stopped their bus to watch the proposal play out! The couple held an intimate ceremony for their immediate families outside the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. A larger Iranian ceremony, which calls for more group participation, at the now-closed Juniper followed, with a reception that brought everyone together on the dance floor. In the midst of a jam-packed day, the newlyweds built in some time to enjoy a quiet moment together. “We enjoyed watching our friends and family come together and celebrate as one. This is even more beautiful to see as different cultures came together,” says Megan. The newlyweds credit their great vendors and a “go with the flow” attitude for a picture-perfect wedding day. “Our only goal was to celebrate each other and [not] feel pressure to make the day ‘perfect,’ ” says Megan. «

Aubrey Biller & Tony Reams BY PETER TONGUETTE PHOTOS BY MICHELLE JOY PHOTOGRAPHY Most relationships start with an element of chance, but Aubrey and Tony Reams’ chance meeting is more unusual than most. In 2017, while both were serving in the Army, Aubrey and Tony met while preparing for deployment to the Middle East. The stress of the situation made for a rocky start to their romance. “We actually had dated for about seven months, cut it off and then got back together a few months later,” Tony says. “You could call it a big growth period; we were also training for a mobilization.” Yet, when the two got back together, they were strong enough to endure a forced separation: Tony was to be stationed in southern Iraq and Aubrey in northern Iraq. “I actually ended up getting moved to Afghanistan, so we were even farther apart,” Aubrey says. “But we decided that we wanted to tackle that together.” After the two returned from their deployments, each decided to embark on civilian life with the goal of beginning new careers and starting a family. During their first shared Christmas season home, Aubrey and Tony drove from his parents’ house to her parents’ house in Newark. “It was a really personal Christmas that year, just because nobody had seen each other,” Aubrey says. The snow began to fall, and as Tony was hauling things from his truck, he approached Aubrey with a hug and a question. You might guess the rest. “He reached into his pocket and he pulled out the ring, got down on one knee in the snowy mud next to his truck,” Aubrey says. “It was very private, very intimate and totally him—and I just loved it.” Personal touches also distinguished the couple’s wedding at the Trout Club in Newark. The couple wrote their own vows, which—although penned independently— each referenced Tony’s enthusiasm for Ohio State sports. Another surprise took place during the newlyweds’ first dance. Leading up to the wedding, Aubrey had devoted herself to learning the Ruelle song “I Get to Love You,” which she performed for her new husband. “It was a song I had heard overseas and instantly thought of Tony,” Aubrey says. “The only people who knew about me singing were a few vendors. I kept it a secret from even my own family.” The impromptu performance had the desired effect on its intended audience, however. “It was just a very raw moment,” says Tony, who now makes his home with Aubrey in Newark. “I didn’t even notice anybody else in the room but her at that point. … The entire day could be summed up by that one moment.” « FALL/WINTER 2020 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Trang Vo & Balsam Kamar BY PETER TONGUETTE | PHOTOS BY KISMET VISUALS You might say that the romance of Trang and Balsam Kamar began on the road. In 2013, Trang, a native of Cincinnati with family in Columbus, moved to New Jersey, Balsam’s home state. Following an introduction by a mutual friend, Trang and Balsam hit it off. “I started showing her around all the places around here, and then the [Jersey] shore,” Balsam says. “And then a lot of trips to New York.” Adds Trang: “We’ve been all over. Our first big trip that we really loved was going to Peru to hike the Machu Picchu Trail. That opened up the floodgates for a bunch of other outdoor adventures.” It was only fitting, then, for Balsam to propose to Trang in a far-off location. In 2017, the couple took a European trip that included stops in Barcelona and the French Riviera. In a park in Nice, with a view of the Mediterranean Sea in sight, Balsam knew “the timing was right.” Trang thought that something might be up. “Balsam was very insistent on taking this promenade walk around the water,” she says. “Then, after it happened, we just walked around the park, a bit dazed. It was really nice because it’s a large park, so it was nice to just wander around and have that private moment to ourselves.” When it came time to exchange vows two years later, Trang and Balsam—who still live in New Jersey—made
an unexpected return to Trang’s roots in Columbus. “We had not initially thought of having our wedding in Ohio,” says Trang, who stumbled upon Jorgensen Farms in New Albany. “It turned out to be exactly what I was thinking.” In addition to being taken with the rural beauty of the site, the couple found that it was ideally suited for their vision of wedding-as-dance-party. “We just wanted to have a really good time,” Trang says. “We didn’t want it to be stuffy or overly formal.” Acknowledging Trang’s Vietnamese heritage, the couple included a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony before the wedding ceremony, which was conducted by Trang’s uncle. “I’d grown up with him actually all of my life,” she says. Another favorite moment came during a speech given by Balsam’s brother and groomsman. “He gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of my mom and how [we’re] a tight-knit family and how we were very welcoming to have Trang to extend that family,” says Balsam, whose family is from Egypt. In keeping with the couple’s worldly ways, a Korean fusion food truck was a perfect capper to the day. “It was a nice way to also bring New York and New Jersey back to Columbus with us and kind of meld all of those elements of our lives,” Trang says. « FALL/WINTER 2020 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Lauren Kantzer & Kayvon Padidar BY BROOKE PRESTON PHOTOS BY NICOLE LEONÉ MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY Kayvon and Lauren Padidar didn’t hit it off right away when they met as Ohio State students. As they began to hang out and grow closer over the years, however, the two slowly realized they had more than a friendship or passing fling on their hands. “I realized she was ‘the one’ after we had been together for a while and had been through some ups and downs,” Kayvon explains. “I saw how loyal, genuine and supportive she was through it all, and the rest was history!” Kayvon wanted to go big with a proposal. “She loves mysteries, puzzles and riddles, so I figured what could be more fitting than a scavenger hunt?” He and Lauren’s mom secretly coordinated for months to plan an epic, day-long adventure. On July 22, 2018, Kayvon planted a dozen clues across the city, which guided Lauren through a day of pampering, culminating at the Columbus Park of Roses with Kayvon “sweating up a storm” with the ring, the couple’s dog Harley and the final clue. Says Lauren, “It was magical, truly the most unforgettable day of my whole life!” On Oct. 19, 2019, the couple were married in front of 180 guests at Dock580 (now closed). Lauren explained that small, personal touches kept memories of loved ones close. “My grandmother had passed away before she could see me get married—she was a florist who loved gardenias. Our florist for the wedding, Heather, put gardenias in my bouquet, my mom’s corsage and my sister’s bouquet. It made it feel like she was with us during this special day. I also wrapped a charm on my bouquet of a picture of my grandma and grandpa on their wedding day.” After the ceremony, Buckeye Entertainment kept the crowd on the dance floor all evening. A dessert table by Chasing Perfection and the couple’s signature blackberry martini wedding cocktail also kept spirits high. Guest favors honored Kayvon’s Iranian family heritage; his mother purchased the special thank-you gifts on a recent trip to visit family there. The newlyweds enjoyed every moment of their big day, but advise engaged couples to make sure each detail of their vision is communicated to vendors in advance. “We could have given our DJ specific instructions on timing for the reception entrance songs, but we didn’t think it was necessary,” says Lauren. “It would have been a good idea, because there were certain parts of the song I would have liked to play. Still, don’t sweat the small stuff. My wedding was everything I could have dreamed of and more!” Kayvon agrees. “Enjoy the big day; take time to soak it all in, because it goes faster than you think!” « 58

Alexandra Wells & Evan Webb BY BROOKE PRESTON | PHOTOS BY RED GALLERY PHOTOGRAPHY For Alexandra Wells and Evan Webb, it was love at first swipe! The pair connected on Tinder and first met up at Fox in the Snow Café for a cup of coffee. “We did all of the things that a person isn’t supposed to do on a first date: talked politics and the environment, and stayed for way too long,” Alexandra says with a laugh. They bonded further over the discovery of mutual college friends and a shared love of Indian food. As their romance grew to talk of marriage, the couple had to have the talk that any good Buckeye fans do: “It was actually Alex who first stated the requirement to get married on a ‘bye’ weekend, if the wedding was in the fall,” Evan says. In true superfan fashion, Alexandra and Evan celebrate their dating anniversary on the first Ohio State football game of every season. “It makes for easy celebrating because we already plan to watch the games, typically with friends, anyway,” Alexandra adds. Evan proposed by taking Alexandra to Due Amici (where they would eventually hold their rehearsal dinner) then to her favorite holiday show, BalletMet’s “The Nutcracker” at the Ohio Theater. “We planned to walk the Scioto Mile and look at the holiday lights after the show, but unfortunately it was raining when the show ended,” Evan says. After much cajoling, he convinced 60
COLUMBUS WEDDINGS FALL/WINTER 2020
Alexandra to make the walk in the rain; he proposed along the Scioto Mile. The couple celebrated with a waiting group of friends at Rockmill Tavern. The couple was married at the Ohio Statehouse in front of 170 guests. “We had an entirely vegetarian wedding, cocktail hour through late-night snack,” says Alexandra. “Many of our meat-eating guests were skeptical, but we had nothing but rave reviews. Milo’s Catering came up with a custom menu for us, and we had Mikey’s [LateNight Slice] deliver our late-night snack—unicorn sauce included!” Handmade décor added more personal touches. While the couple enjoyed every second, their advice for those who want to involve furry friends is to make a “dog plan” in advance. “There had been so much back and forth, and there was so much going on, that Evan didn’t realize that he needed to give our house keys to an usher to get [our dog] prior to the ceremony, and we had to go on without her,” Alexandra says. “Luckily, our planner sent someone to our home to get her in time for pictures!” They highly recommend couples hire a wedding planner, who can help with everything—even dog logistics. “Even if you only hire a day- or month-of planner, that person is in your corner and knows what you two as a couple want and can help make it happen,” says Alexandra. «
