The Explore! Program

Exploring the outdoors

Rising Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten

Our natural outdoor play space serves as an extension of the indoor space, creating learning possibilities which are fluid and boundless. The natural play space allows for children to reimagine how they engage in outdoor play, and encourages curiosity and wonder at the workings of the natural world. While typical playgrounds provide children with a structured setting in which they can develop largemotor skills, CSG’s natural play space also encourages children to interact dynamically with their play space, inviting them to create meaningful play scenarios, to make connections to prior learning, and to extend daily discoveries. An integral part of CSG Summer Programs, our new play space offers opportunities for discovery, occasion for wonder, and true appreciation of the outdoors!

Full and half-day options The Explore! Program is a program for children ages 3-5 who will be entering Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten this fall. The program offers co-educational, academically, and socially enriching curriculum that allows children to expand and explore the world around them. With an emphasis placed on child-lead discovery, campers will have the chance to engage in a variety of learning experiences through literature and project-based learning. CSG’s unique approach to learning emphasizes the development of the whole child, and seeks to encourage children to become proactive in their learning and discoveries. In the Explore! Program, your child will view the world through joyous, curious eyes, seeing possibility and opportunity in every activity. The Explore! Program gives children fun, authentic, and engaging ways to learn and interact with each other and their surroundings!

Exploring the classroom The Explore! Program is located in CSG’s Columbia House, a separate on-campus facility designated specifically for early childhood development. Young children enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to engage in age-appropriate activities that promote independent thinking, problem solving, and social-emotional growth. Each classroom is equipped with centers for writing, building, dramatic play, and sensory exploration. Columbia House also offers a shared studio space where children are given opportunities to explore, create, and collaborate with each other on integrated projects through the use of various media. Such classroom and studio work deepens understanding, provides the means for handson exploration, and excites children in their learning endeavors!

Exploring the water Campers in the four and five year-old classrooms will have the opportunity to partake in daily swimming lessons from our Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certified swim Instructors. Instructors will evaluate each child’s strengths and then group campers based on skill and comfort in the water. With the development of the whole child in mind, swimming will offer children time to strengthen their bodies, develop and refine large motor skills, and learn a lifelong skill while having fun! Children will be encouraged to challenge themselves to grow as swimmers and become confident in an aquatic environment.

Enrichment Courses

This year, CSG Summer Programs are offering academic enrichment courses for rising 1st – 3rd graders. Each course is designed to help students focus on a specific academic area so your child can gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum or would simply enjoy additional experiences in a specific area. Learning-centered and hands-on activities will help to support or further your child’s love for that subject. Course Schedule: Parents may choose to enroll their child in only an enrichment course (meaning the student would be at CSG only for the time of the course) or may choose to have their child take an enrichment course as a part of their morning camp schedule. See the course listings below for specific course information.

The Write Stuff (Handwriting Enrichment)

Grades Pre - K (age 5 and 6) / Week 2 / 9:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Grades 1 and 2 / Week 2 / 8:45 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. * Morning Program (+ Writing Enrichment) - Additional cost of $68. Meet the Director

Meet the Director Rachel Barends, Director of Summer Programs Rachel Barends has been a part of the CSG community for more than a decade. She has held the roles of CSG Parent and CSG Summer Programs Employee. As a Bexley resident, she is a community supporter for the School. She has a degree in Health and Fitness Management with Minors in Business and Coaching and a Master’s Degree in Adult Education. Rachel started her summer employment at CSG as a Senior Program Assistant teaching swim lessons, a middle school fitness class, and taking 7th and 8th grade students on Great Day! Afternoon field trips (now referred to as Zoom!). Throughout her six years, she assisted teaching a Grade 8 Health Class, became the Aquatics Coordinator, taught an Upper School Water Safety Credit Course, and became the Great Day! Afternoon Program Coordinator – planning 30 trips per age group for a total of 120 trips each summer! After saying a goodbye to the Summer Program in 2009, Rachel always knew she would come back if the opportunity of a full time position ever became available. She spent the past six years working as an Aquatics Director at the Jewish Community Center and the YMCA of Central Ohio. During her time there, she continued to have a large role in the direction of their summer camps as well as focusing her attention toward risk management, staff professional development, health promotion, and fundraising. She also spent seven years as the Head Coach for Cross Country and Assistant Coach for Track and Field at Capital University, where she spent a great deal of time in program development, team organization and operations, assisted in Hosting the 2011 NCAA Indoor National Championships, and led Capital’s first female cross country athlete to National Competition. Rachel is excited to be back at CSG –a school that she loves! And she is so happy to be leading the program she has been passionate about for many years. She resides in Bexley with her husband and three children.
