FROM THE EDITOR Hello! You are holding the inaugural issue of Spoked, the new magazine focused on the sport of cycling from a woman’s perspective. As the founder and editor-in-chief, my goal is simple—I want you to get out and ride! Our philosophy at Spoked is to inform and to advocate: • We want to be your go-to information source on all things cycling. You’ll find stories about other women riders, fun and challenging places to ride and ways to incorporate cycling into your busy life. We’ll give you tips on everything from fixing a flat and eating properly to choosing the right bike. • We also will advocate on your behalf—for more equality in women’s cycling and on issues that affect all riders, such as funding for more bike lanes, stronger enforcement of laws protecting cyclists and programs that reward businesses for accommodating healthy life choices by their employees. We want our content in the magazine and on Spoked Magazine.com to enlighten, entertain and engage you. The writers, editors, photographers and designers who have joined me at Spoked are people I think you would enjoy having as riding companions—active, fun, open, encouraging and happy to share their knowledge about cycling. We see cycling as a way not only to get fit and stay healthy, but also to socialize and meet like-minded people. We hope you will, too. The 2013 edition of the American Bicyclist Study found that among 29- to 48-year-olds, women comprise 55 percent of bike riders. More women than ever are riding, whether for transportation, health or pleasure. That’s why I created Spoked—to help you become the best rider you can be. I hope you’ll come along for the ride!

‘Don’t sit on the couch and feel sorry for yourself’ Q&A with Karen Keefer, breast cancer survivor and founder of the new Franklin County Cyclists BY KATHERINE NOONE Spoked: What kind of cancer were you diagnosed with and when? Karen Keefer: Breast cancer in April 2009. What was your life like before you learned you had cancer? I was a registered nurse in the operating room at Chambersburg Hospital for 20-some years. I was very active; I was a sponsored athlete for trisports. com. 2009 was going to be the busiest year that I had had. In 2008, my husband died in his sleep from a cardiac arrhythmia. So, one year, you have that awful stuff happen. Then, the next year, you get the breast cancer. … Later on, I was training in Australia [for the Ironman Triathlon]. I was right in the middle of my chemo, so they gave me a triple dose right before I left. Before cancer, my goal was to place. My goal switched from placing to finishing. Your whole perspective changes. I did finish in Australia. I was next to last. I came across the finish line and thought, “I should just do something crazy.” I took my cap off as I was runKaren talks to children at a bike safety clinic last spring. With her is Cpl. David Smith of the Chambersburg Police Department, also a FCC member.

ning across the finish line. Everyone was cheering me on. I was really happy. How did you form Franklin County Cyclists? It started with a bike club at the hospital. One hundred or so people joined to start. By the second year we had 200, and the third year, 300. We then outgrew the hospital and formed our own non-profit organization. What is the age range and gender of FCC members? It’s men and women of all ages. There are five different levels of rides we do, which go different distances and paces based on the riders’ abilities. What is your favorite thing about FCC? My favorite part is that there are so many new people deciding to ride and so many people that are genuinely happy. I feel like I help people accomplish their goals. I love getting people over their fear of riding on the road. How do you encourage other women to start riding? We’ve gained support through Wilson College’s “Eat Sleep Run Grow” women’s seminar, which helps fight domestic violence. Mostly, we gain new members through word of mouth. Tell us about the FCC annual charity ride. There’s a bike ride in June to raise funds for two local breast cancer treatment and support programs. Half the funds go to the Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center, and half go to the Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance. These two organizations helped me the most when I was going through my treatments. I wanted to give back.

Karen Keefer

How does cycling still impact your life today? I can’t walk down the hall of the hospital without someone asking me about my rides. People I work with can’t wait to tell me about what they did, where they rode and how far they went. That makes me feel really good. What message/advice would you give to other women who are fighting cancer? Please get exercise everyday. Go outside and do something. Don’t sit on the couch and feel sorry for yourself.

One last helmet adjustment.

Balancing act

Cheryl Sornson, one of the best mountain bike racers in the country, is used to a little dirt around the house

Balancing act BY CAROLYN SEIBERT-DRAGER

Cheryl Sornson doesn’t sweat the small stuff. She knows what is important to her—pursuing her passions, both personally and professionally, and making sure her family does the same. Her personal passion is cycling. Now 46, she’s been riding since she was a child and racing on and off for the past 25 years, starting as an undergraduate at Salisbury State College (now university) in Maryland. She has been racing consistently—and successfully—for the past eight years, primarily on her mountain bike. “I compete in cross-country mountain biking, endurance mountain biking and mountain bike stage racing,” she said. “Recently I also started doing cyclocross and gran fondos. I like the variety of doing a mix of racing.” [See sidebar] Sornson has won the prestigious National Ultra Endurance Mountain Bike Series three times and the Transylvania Epic Stage Race twice. This past summer, she placed seventh at the U.S. National Cross-Country Mountain Bike Championship in the pro women’s class. She also has won numerous cyclocross races. While she has competed in races across the country and internationally, her favorite race remains her local race—the annual Michaux Endurance Series, composed of three races held in different regions of Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania. Her all-time favorite place to ride is a little farther from home. Last year, she traveled to South Africa to compete in the Cape Epic, “my ultimate best place I ever raced!” Like any professional athlete, Sornson likes to win, but racing goes beyond that for her. “What I like best is the way I get to challenge myself and push myself to extremes that help me in my everyday life. It helps make me strong,” she remarked. “On race days, I welcome the jitters and know it is me getting ready to kick butt.” “Of course it is good to win, but what I really like is the feeling of pushing yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of and getting lost in the adrenaline and carrying that feeling with you for days.” “Cheryl has been competing in the Michaux races, when it fits in her racing schedule, for many years,” said Jes Stith, owner of Gettysburg Bicycle and Fitness, the longtime host of the Michaux series. “She is not only a great competitor but a lot of fun to have in a race. 16 • SpokedMagazine.com • JANUARY 2015

Cheryl Sornson has raced throughout the United States and in South Africa. She’s been juggling home, career and cycling for nearly a decade.

“I’ve known Cheryl and supported her through the bike shop for a long time,” he added. “I couldn’t be happier for the success she’s had.” Sornson currently races for Rare Disease Cycling (www. rarediseasecycling.org), based in Philadelphia, which helps raise awareness of “orphan” or rare diseases. The team has 47 riders; Sornson is part of its 14-rider elite roster. “It is a great team to race with; we have a very talented group of riders,” she said. “Being on this team fuels the joy of the experience by giving our rides a purpose. I know what we do matters. That knowledge grounds me. It is not just about podiums; it is about changing lives.” Helping to change lives fuels Sornson’s professional passion as well. For the past 10 years, she has worked as a coun-

selor at Fairfield Area Middle School in Adams County, Pennsylvania, serving students in fifth through eighth grade. It is not an easy profession, but, like cycling, she enjoys the challenges it brings. “I work with about 350 students, along with parents, teachers and administrators,” she said. “Counselors are in something of a unique position in the school system. We are not administrators and are contracted just as the teachers and staff are, but we are often looked to as leaders and expected to take on administrative roles.” Sornson is hard pressed to describe a “normal” day. “There is no telling what I will encounter throughout a day when working for and with so many,” she remarked. “Typically on any given day, I meet with students, teachers, parents or administrators. I teach classes for each grade level on topics such as character development, tobacco and drug awareness, and career development. I also work with the school psychologist to develop and implement self-monitoring or behavior plans for students when needed. “And there are the times, the very sad cases, when I need to make phone calls to Children and Youth Services or other organization to help a family or a student. Being in the school and having such a large caseload, I am unable to do any long-term therapy, so another role of mine is to advocate for students and refer them to the appropriate resources for whatever assistance they need.” While the job has its challenges, it also provides the opportunity to change a young person’s life. “That is how the helping profession works, especially in schools. It can be exhausting, but it is rewarding to know that we truly impact the lives of so many,” Sornson said. “I like my job. It keeps my on my toes and is always changing. I would be bored stiff if I encountered the same thing every day.” Finding the right balance for everything in her life is not easy, as she readily admits. Having the support of her husband, Lee, and 14-yearold son, Levi, plays a big part. “Balancing it all is hard. I don’t think I have it down, but I manage it pretty well,” she said. “What I do know is that I am following my passion, and it makes me a better person all around. I hope that I am inspiring to those around me. Who cares if the house has a little extra dirt when we are all having a good time pursuing the things that make us happy!” So what is a “gran fondo”? Gran fondos originated in Italy; the name means “big ride.” They have grown in popularity in the United States in the past few years. They are long-distance, timed road rides, and often are 100 kilometers or more in length. They can draw thousands of riders. 18 • SpokedMagazine.com • JANUARY 2015
