A home away from home:

The transition from home to college life By Kayla Corbin Moving from your everyday home life to a new and scary place can be overwhelming at first. Shippensburg University communication/journalism students Jessica Malick, 20, and Jessica Richardson, 20, have had more than two years of dealing with this transition. The college juniors reside in an off campus apartment together with one other roommate. Moving on Once you move out of your parent’s home, you are thrown into a life of freedom and independence. Malick remembers the transition being hard, but better than she had expected. “It was hard because it was my first time being away from home for a long amount of time, and I missed my family and dogs a lot,” she said. Richardson added, “I grew up where family was the most important thing to you, so going from being with them almost everyday to living on my

Malick and Richardson both suggested hanging pictures up on the walls of your apartment. For Richardson, hanging photographs of her family and dog gave her motivation throughout the school year. Bringing personal photographs to college can help transform a bare, cold feeling apartment into something personal. Don’t let yourself be the person who stares at the blank white walls, searching for something more. Make sure you bring special, little items to your apartment or dorm that remind you how you have gotten this far.

Get involved Meeting new people and getting involved is a really important aspect of college life both of the students shed light on. “Even though it’s really hard, you have to put yourself out there and push yourself out of your comfort zone,” Malick said.

Some students will have an easier transition than others. “Find something you like to do, because keeping yourself busy will help make the transition easier,” Richardson said. It is better for you to go out and explore new, exciting opportunities than regret it later on after you graduate. College is a time for you not only to find yourself, but find people who could stand along with you for years to come. Richardson suggested getting involved through clubs and organizations that you are interested in. Both Malick and Richardson are involved with the school newspaper, The Slate, and the sorority Alpha Phi. Malick is also a member of PRSSA. Although it may seem like you have a lot on your plate, they both agree that it is better to keep yourself busy and active than just lie around wondering “what if.” Malick is thankful she found her sorority, because it helped her meet a lot of people. Not only did she become close with sisters in her sorority, but she met a lot of people through Greek life in general. Joining a sorority is a really good and easy way to meet new people who are interested in the same things you

are. Malick urges students to check out Greek life, even if you are unsure if it is for you. You never know what could be waiting for you. It is easy to surround yourself with the wrong kind of people as you start your college career. “If you surround yourself with the wrong people, it can bring you down,” Richardson said. If you find organizations and clubs that you are interested in, you are more likely to find your crowd.

“Even though it’s really hard, you have to put yourself out there and push yourself out of your comfort zone,” -Jessica Malick

Richardson also mentions that surrounding yourself with the wrong people can damage how much you grow in your college experience. Malick mentions how less stressful her college experience has been because she has good friends around her that she is able to talk to about pretty much everything. It is important to remember that you are not alone at your time at college. Malick has realized people understand what you are going through. Decorating your new home Malick and Richardson stressed how important it is, for them especially, to make sure you bring photographs of people from home who are close to you. Richardson uses these photographs as good memories to look back on when she is feeling down, and also sees them as motivation to push herself through a bad week. Hanging photographs is an easy way to brighten up a blank wall. With photographs, you have unlimited possibilities. Malick has her photographs set up as a collage. Richardson, on the other hand, has photographs hanging in multiple shots. Photographs can really personalize a bedroom, and it is something to highly consider when thinking of how to decorate your room at college. It also helps Malick feel like she

is home by decorating seasonally. For example, for the fall season, the apartment is full of gourds, pumpkins, candy corn lights, and other small decorations. She looks forward to changing decorations as the seasons pass. Decorating your apartment with your roommates can also help you bond. In their case, on the first night in their new apartment, they stayed up decorating canvases and first initials to make it more personal. Quick and healthy meals on a college budget

By Emilee Traver

If you’ve ever experienced a normal week at college, you will know that it includes stressing over school work and not much of anything else. Sometimes we forget the importance of taking a break, relaxing and eating a meal or two because we feel as if there is not enough time. Mallory Aleman, a culinary student at the Pennsylvania School of Culinary Arts, stresses the significance of eating three meals a day. “Our bodies run on food and water. If we do not provide it with ample meals throughout the day, it will not matter how much studying for an exam we do – we’ll forget the answers due to the lack of energy we have.” Being a student herself, Mallory has found ways to balance school and eat healthy on her limited college budget. She was happy to share a few of her go-to meals, which she swears by if someone wants to eat healthy yet still have plenty of time to do school work.

Breakfast Spinach and Feta Omelette ($6) Ingredients: 3 eggs, 2 oz. crumbled feta ¼ c. spinach (chopped and cooked) 3 tbsp. butter Start by melting the three tbsp. of butter into a pan on medium heat. Crack three eggs into a bowl and whisk them. Pour the whisked eggs into the pan, tipping the pan to make sure the eggs cover the bottom of it. When the underside is slightly browned, add in the crumbled feta and spinach. Fold the omelet in half and cook until the inside is cooked. Slide the omelet onto a plate and enjoy!

This is a great recipe that incorporates ingredients from breakfast to save money. You’ll first want to make the dressing, which is simple. Start by mashing the garlic is a medium mixing bowl, making it into a chunky paste. Add in the buttermilk, mayonnaise, oregano and vinegar. Whisk the ingredients until they are combined and refrigerate while you make the pasta. Depending on what type of whole wheat pasta you chose, the cooking directions may be different. Cook the pasta in a large boiling pot of water according to what is on the packaging. When cooked, drain and transport to a large mixing bowl and let it cool down. Add the broccoli, tomatoes, chickpeas and crumbled feta and toss. Add the dressing to your liking and serve!

Ingredients: 1 lb. small zucchini ¼ c. flour ½ c. and 2 tbsp. olive oil ¾ lb. spaghetti 1 c. shredded parmesan cheese ½ c. torn basil leaves and lemon wedges (for serving)
