To date, or not to date?

Nativgating the new wave of online dating, how to stay safe and get results! By: Bobbi Phelps

With the ever-changing world of digital apps and online sites young adults have found new ways to interact with potential significant others. These apps allow millenials to safely interact with their peers in an online setting and potentially turn the conversation into a dating relationship.

through the website. Plenty of Fish also made some interesting changes to the app in 2013. They removed the “intimate encounters option,” they restricted contacting another user that is 14-years-old or if there is an age difference, and men were banned from sending attachments in their messages. The company has taken numerous steps to ensure that they are still considered a dating app and not a hookup app.

TInder

Currently the most popular app for online dating among young adults is Tinder. Tinder was released in 2012 and currently has over 50 million users. After entering your information and connecting your Tinder account to Facebook Tinder generates other people in your area. After setting up your account you can either swipe right to accept the person or swipe left to deny them. Many relationships have blossomed from a swipe to the right, but Tinder still has a reputation for just being a hookup app as opposed to a real dating app. Marissa Hughes met her current boyfriend, Garret Brant, on Tinder eight months ago. She said, “A lot of people think of Tinder as just a hook up app, but it really is what you make of it.” Marissa said she never expected to find someone she could connect to so well on a dating app.

Another dating app that is widely used by young adults is Plenty of Fish. Plenty of Fish was created in 2003 and currently has over 100 million users. Unlike Tinder, Plenty of Fish can be accessed either through the app or 26

OK Cupid has been running since 2004, only one year after Plenty of Fish began. The company has over 30 million users. OK Cupid is very similar to Plenty of Fish, but it incorporates quizzes into its matching. The more questions a user answers the stronger his or her matches will be. The company prides itself on the in depth algorithms it uses to create the strongest relationships among members.

Do They Work?

So, the question everyone wants to know the answer to: Do these apps work? Well, the answer is yes and no. Emily Ranney has been using dating apps for a little over a year. She said she prefers OK Cupid, but also uses Zoosk once in a while. Emily said: “It all depends on what you’re looking for. These sites offer a great opportunity to meet people if you’re willing to sort through and find people that are truly looking for what you are, whatever that maybe. I’ve personally have had some luck meeting some nice gentlemen. It’s hard to meet people you don’t already know, and it’s definitely helped me figure out what I want and don’t want in a relationship.”

Making It Work: TUrning Dreams INTo A Reality By: Sydney Dore

C

ollege students nationwide are on a quest to find a passion they can turn into a career. The pressures of student loans and parents’ concerns have led many young women to give up their dreams and hobbies for what others deem a more practical career. Two young women, Maddison Rogers and Morgan Colburn, have turned their two unique passions into the beginnings of lifelong careers. Maddison Rogers, a social work major at Shippensburg University, found her true calling thousands of miles away in Nicaragua. Morgan Colburn, a fashion merchandising student, at LIM College in New York, found herself hustling through the concrete jungle to work behind the scenes with the newest designers.

S

hippensburg University junior Maddi son Rogers said giving to the community has always been and integral part of her life, which she is now turning into a career. She searches to find the right words to begin her story, tucking her shoulder length brown hair behind her ears. Then she looks up as her green eyes sparkle with the answer. “My mom,” she says confidently, “I have always been inspired by my mom.” Rogers’ desire to look after and help people comes naturally. Her mother, Sherri Rogers, is a nurse who prides herself in having a close connection with her patients. “She develops these really strong personal connections with the patients. She knows their families and what is happening in their lives outside of the hospital. I think she showed me how treat other people,” she said with a smile. Her empathy for others isn’t limited solely to people; Rogers is a self-proclaimed animal activist. “It is kind of a joke, but I love all animals. I was that child that wouldn’t let my dad kill bugs because I didn’t want to hurt them.” She laughs while recalling her days spent rolling around in the mud with worms.

The social work major’s devotion to service began in high school when she traveled to Nicaragua several times to volunteer with the program VISEDAL, a nonprofit that sponsors children so they can attend school. Rogers first heard about this program her sophomore year of high school and immediately wanted to sign up and travel. “I knew instantly that it was something I wanted to take part in. I love children, and at the time I really wanted to be a teacher. I thought it was a really great opportunity to have an experience that combined both things,” she said. On her first trip, she traveled over Christmas break with four other students, a teacher and a director from the program. A French student at the time, she was nervous about the language barrier and what exactly she would be walking into.

Rogers instantly connected with a young girl named Genesis, a sister of one of the VISEDAL scholars. During their visits helping the children with their homework, or when they were playing together she felt connected to the young girl. In 2014, Rogers became Genesis’ sponsor allowing her to join the program and attend school. According to the letters VISEDAL posts on their website, her mother leaves Nicaragua to work in Costa Rica to support her family, leaving her brothers under the care of their grandmother. As Genesis continued in the program, Rogers received letters from her talking about her progress in school, which Rogers hangs in her room at home.

“It was incredible how people connect with you. They kids wanted to know us as much as we wanted to know them, and it didn’t matter if we could barely understand each other sometimes.” “Before you leave on any kind of mission trip, they explain to you the kind of work you will be doing and the kind of atmosphere you will be in. I was really nervous I wouldn’t be able to connect or communicate with anyone, because I was the only one in my group who didn’t know Spanish,” Rogers said. “It was incredible how people connect with you. They kids wanted to know us as much as we wanted to know them, and it didn’t matter if we could barely understand each other sometimes.”

Maddion Rogers hugs Gensis while visiting Nicaurga in 2013. This sparked Rogers love of service towards others.

“It is really something that changes you,” she said. “It is really hard to come home because it is like being in two different worlds. It’s not quite like we have so much and they have so little. It is more the idea that I go back to living my life, and all these people I met were thousands of miles away.” 29

The experience affected Rogers so much she returned again her senior year. “I just wanted to take every opportunity to be back there again, I would still go at a moment’s notice,” she said. After she returned from her mission trips, she began working at the nonprofit summer day camp for children in the Patterson Park area of Baltimore called Camp St. Vincent. “Many of the children who come to camp live in homeless shelters, and it gives them something safe to do during the day.” She began her time there as a volunteer and worked under inner-city elementary school teachers who ran camp as a summer job. She planned to follow in their footsteps, but something wasn’t quite right. “The more time I spend talking to teachers and understand what is that they do, the more I thought I was on the right path. I just thought it was the best way to connect with the kids I was working with,” she explained. Her experience with teaching left a bad taste her mouth, she explains. It took away from the connections she had felt with the children with whom she worked. She said that she could not be a friend to her students, and the idea of being unable to help them individually when they needed it was not something she was interested in. It was not until Christmas break during her sophomore year when she realized she needed to make a change. “ I didn’t want to deal the bureaucracy that comes with being a teacher. I wanted to help people, especially children,” she said. So she switched her major to social work with a minor in Spanish. “I just thought back to my time in Nica, and I thought if I could do that for the rest of my life I could be really happy,” she said.

O

n a different coast, Morgan Colburn walks two blocks and rides three trains from her Union Square 30

apartment to her sleek and modern college buildings dotted throughout Midtown Manhattan. “I have always dreamed about moving to New York, so when I actually moved here I felt like I was still dreaming. I want to work in fashion, and this is the place to go,” she said. Her voyage into the ever-changing fashion world began when she would create her own costumes for her dance recital. “I wasn’t very good at drawing and sewing, but I liked picking out different things I thought looked nice together. I usually went for sequins or tutus—things that were really loud,” she laughs,” I liked making a statement. “My parents really tried to push me toward something more practical and for a while I was listening to them, but nothing really stuck with me. I love fashion and if I didn’t make that huge part of my life I was going to regret it,” Colburn said thinking back to the search for the right school. She made a compromise, “I chose fashion school specifically because it was risky and hardcore. If I wanted to peruse fashion business I had to go where there was the most opportunity.” She has learned the importance of hustle, she says. “You have to get out there and push. It’s like in the Devil Wears Prada, when they tell Anne Hathaway there are a million girls who would kill her be in her shoes. There are so many people who want one or two coveted spots, and you just have to push your way in especially if you’re a nobody like me,” Colburn laughs. In the winter of 2014, Colburn received her first break, she was hired to work as an intern behind the scenes during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. She and her roommate Darcy arrived to Lincoln Center in the early morning hours to unpack and steam dresses for designer Katya Zol. “Everyone is moving at lightening speed, and you’re trying to finish what you’re doing as fast as possible before someone gives you a new job. It’s a rush,” she said.

“It is 100% what I am meant to be doing, it is a lot of work. If you care about something you’re going to want to push yourself to get out there and work harder. I don’t really know how it’s going to work out just yet, but I am excited to keep trying,” Colburn concludes.
