Stepping on the Campaign Trail Millennials can be the most powerful voters in the United States today, yet only 18% vote. Many Millennials feel their votes simply do not matter or that the major party candidates don’t represent their interests. Why is that? Rachel Kiser, a graduate student in Information Systems at Robert Morris University has a few opinions. “I think the big reason millennials don’t vote is because we have to work too much. I know a lot of people that have to work two or three jobs just to make ends meet. And when you have to work that much who has the time to vote?” she says with a shrug. When asked about the two current major party candidates Kiser says, “I don’t like either Hillary or Trump and I think a lot of people my age feel the same way. Most people I know are going to vote for Hillary because, at the very least, she’s not a raving orange lunatic. I think a lot of us got the wind taken out of our proverbial sails when Bernie didn’t get the Democratic nomination.” But what about Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson? “I’ve voted third party before, but I would never vote for a Libertarian, so Gary Johnson’s out. Most of the people I know that would consider voting Libertarian are what I’d charitably call ‘man-children’ that don’t care about anything but themselves. That’s actually kind of a good metaphor for libertari

anism,” she says with a laugh. “I’m sorry, but laissez-faire capitalism isn’t the answer. Unless we want to go back to the era of robber barons or something.” How about Green Party nominee Jill Stein? “I could get behind Jill Stein on most issues, but her lack of experience worries me. Also a few of her ideas lean toward being kooky.” Matt Rodgers, a law student at Indiana University in Indianapolis, says, “I get why some people want to vote for Trump, though I never would. He’s from the billionaire class and all, but he’s a political outsider. There’s so much distrust in the system today that any outsider, even Trump, holds some appeal.”

Kiser and Rodgers’ have similar opinions on third party candidates, “I truly believe libertarians are worse than Republicans in many respects. Just saying that gives the libertarian platform too much attention. As far as Jill Stein, I like a lot of her policies, but I’m not going to vote for her. My guy was Bernie. The leftie political outsider. Stein’s definitely the closest to Bernie in spirit and politics, but I’m going to follow Bernie’s endorsement of Hillary. I don’t like her at all, but a Trump presidency would be disastrous. I don’t like compromising, but this is something I have to do.” Rodgers’ opinions on why more Millennials don’t vote is complicated. “It’s honestly baffling to me. Not voting is like voting against your own self-interests. It pisses me off when I hear people say they don’t vote and they seem proud of it. That sort of invalidates their opinions on politics if they don’t bother.” Kiser’s dream shoes are a pair of Gothic Shoe Company’s handmade winklepickers. When asked about his dream shoes Rodgers says, “Give me sandals in summer. I’ll take that.”

Great Strides Foreign Everyone has a story to tell about the great strides he or she has made. To walk a mile in someone else’s shoes is to get an understanding of a piece of their lives. This story happens to take more than 4,000 miles. This a story of a young woman that has crossed oceans to become who she is today. Angela is 22 years old. She moved to Carlisle, Pa., from Naples, Italy, in December 2005. She will turn 12 in January. When she moved to the United States, she did

not speak much English. She said learning English was difficult at first, and she did not have many friends because of the language barrier. Being the new kid at school is hard enough; imagine being the new kid in the country. Some kids have a difficult time making friends because they are shy or because of the clothes they wear, but not being able to make friends because you cannot speak to other kids a whole new meaning to “the new kid in town.” She

explained how the other kids made fun of her, probably because they did not understand her. People tend to fear what they do not understand. When Angela first moved to America, she hated it because she could not participate in any activities due to the language barrier. For a while, she took the bus to school and came straight home after school. “I couldn’t even watch TV anymore because I couldn’t understand it,” Angela said. After a few years, she was

17

able to learn English as a second language. She is still a translator for both of her parents. Unlike most millennial Americans today, she got married at the age of 18, after being with her boyfriend for only two years. The marriage only lasted two years. She went through a divorce at the age of 21, an unrealistic nightmare for many women across the country. When her relationship was going smoothly, other aspects in her life were not. Her family was looking into a local restaurant that was up for sale located in Newville, Pa. Since her parents could not speak much English, her uncle was going to be the official owner of the restaurant. Her uncle got very sick and had to move back to Italy for recovery. Her parents no longer had the opportunity to own the restaurant because of the language barrier. Their

“I don’t regret any of my choices, they have all made me stronger and made me into the woman I am today.” dreams were slipping away faster than they could come up with an alternative solution. They could not get the business since Angela was not 18 at the time of this business venture. She sighed, “We didn’t have any other choice.”

Angela’s mother, Filomena Geremia has lived in America for just as long as Angela, but since she is older and did not have the education to learn a second language, she still speaks very little English. She was with her husband for five years then they got married and had Angela two years later in Italy. Angela translated for Filomena, “Life in Italy isn’t as good as TV makes it look. It is hard to find a job and to be able to afford living.” She continued, “Coming to America was my best option so Angela could have a better future.” All of Filomena’s brothers were in America running a restaurant, so in December of 2005 Filomena, her husband and 11-year-old daughter moved to America.Since being in America, she has worked in family-owned restaurants. She said, “It broke my heart when my family couldn’t own the

restaurant.” She’s never been on a nice vacation and never went back to Italy since the move. Every few years her parents come to America but that is the only family she has seen since living in the United States. Angela described her mother as a hard worker, and she appreciates the sacrifice her mother has made for her to be able to live a better life. Although Angela went through great hardships at such a young age, these hardships made her stronger. At the age of 22, she is trilingual in Italian, English, and Spanish. She is in a new relationship that she is taking slow. She plans to go to school for International Studies when the time is right for her. She said, “I don’t regret any of my choices, they have all made me stronger and made me into the woman I am today.” Her uncle now owns an Italian restaurant called

Napoli located in Carlisle, Pa. and her parents work at the restaurant with him. This shows people that dreams do not die after the first failed attempt. Dreams can and do come true with perseverance and dedication. “Never give up on yourself or your family,” agreed Angela and Filomena. Angela’s favorite pair of shoes are a classic pair of black platform heels. Her dream shoes are a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti sparkly black platform heels that were released in 2012. Filomena said, “I love any boots that will keep me warm during the winter.”
