Letter from the Editor For as long as I could remember, Ocean City, Maryland has been my second home. From the time I could walk, I was in the water. Nothing makes me happier than the smell of salt in the air, the feel of sand between my toes and the sound of waves lapping against the shore. I chose to create a magazine about the beach for one simple reason: I love it! I hoped to convey ‘beach vibes’ throughout my magazine. Each graphic, color and picture was carefully selected to portray the best beachy feel there could be. From the department titles to topics of the feature and freelance story, I wanted my magazine to reflect the relaxing and tranquil vibes the beach does for me. When readers first glanced at the cover, I hoped for them to be as captivated by the sunset as I was when I experienced it. When they start flipping through the pages, I hoped the color scheme was bold but subtle enough to give off the beach vibe. Each ad,

6

whether for a local OC business or a huge brand name surf company like Ripcurl, was selected to keep the feel of the magazine consistent from beginning to end.

I love the beach and go as often as I can, which made selecting a magazine about the beach easy. I hope my ideas, designs and overall project reflect exactly what I hoped they would… beachy vibes. Because to me, there is nothing better than the view of the WAVES.

I’m a local business owner in OC who reads your magazine religiously and this really helped me, being a relativiely new to the business world. I really liked the interviews with Ish Boutique and Hooper’s Crab House owners... those local opionions really helped to validate the article. Thanks again!!

1. We know anything DIY can be intimidating, especially for those of us who’d rather peruse PINT-erest than Pinterest (get it? like pint of beer?).

1. Candle-making is a long-beloved crafts. You can use them in your own home or make candle gift favors for an event.

2. While seeking examples of do it yourself beach encampments, we checked out how the crazy kids at Fort Tilden do it (they tend to be in extra need of shelter, on account of being mostly naked).

2. I prepared for this project by gathering a few items: braided wick rope, wick tabs, five pounds of unscented soy candle wax (soy burns longer than paraffin), and a small container of fragrance oil formulated for use in candle-making: Cinnamon Sugar!

3. They are perfect for summer table settings and add a whimsical, romantic element to your home.

3. I had trouble finding a variety of scents, but came across this one at the local craft store. Hopefully this means that my house will smell like delicious

5. You can get most of the materials from your local craft store, and it should take only 20 to 30 minutes to make.

3. While you can ostensibly pitch your own makeshift shelter at any of NYC’s beaches, Fort Tilden. 4. There’s never a shortage of drifte.

A wedding day for a pair of love birds at the bayside terrace of Ocean City, Md. The story of the newest Mr. & Mrs. By: Esraa Alhawasi Marisa & Matt’s engagements photos, www.mywedding.com/penrosekoss/ It is a late fall wedding day on afternoon of September 24, 2016 at the Bayside terrace of the Ocean City Convention Center (OCCC). The area is surrounded with dark-light blue waves, soft, cold sand, a cloudy sky, breathtaking sunset and the scene of a flock of migratory birds above the ocean, which is the place for the special day of Marisa Kossakowski and Matt Penrose’s wedding. Kossakowski and Penrose met at the Ocean City, MD., WineFest in 2013 and a special glass of wine brought them together on their special day. Kossakowski says, “So wine needs to be part of our binding ceremony for life, our marriage.” The love story gets its confirmation after an excited Las Vegas show when both admit their love almost in the same moment. September 4, 2015, in Yellowstone National Park in Salt Lake City, Utah is the witnessed day of Kossakowski and Penrose’s engagement.

The couple enjoys seeing the bears, wolves and other animals in the area in cool weather, which opens a door for Penrose to make the day better when he asks Kossakowski, “How about if I

Approaching to the wedding day, challenges begin when the climate changes to rain and the grooms face the biggest issue to move the “WINE tasting” event, which was originally to be outside, inside the Ballroom . They quickly re-plan the Bayside terrace that will face the water as a place for their ceremony to reflect all feelings they have to the guests and the guests’ eyes can see and enjoy the bayside views from all corners with the U-shaped seating. Furthermore, the wooden centerpiece slices, the table numbers the arbor, the Bags boards, the photo window and the wooden bracket were all made by Penrose. They’re filled with candles, flowers in sunset colors and bulb lights are hung. The Ballroom characterizes the sunset from the ground to ceiling and that is why Marisa and Matt (M&M) will share a moment of silence at sunset. Kossakowski arranges a special dress with the bridesmaids who are wearing “varying shades of coral,” Kossakowski says, “to represent the sunset!”

Offseason Ocean City: Our best kept secret We think you’ll love offesason OC just as much as we do By: Kaylee Beattie Many people don’t realize, but offseason Ocean City is one of the most fun ways you can experience OC. Offseason starts after Labor Day weekend and ends on Memorial Day weekend. Everyone knows how fun the beach is in the summer, but with fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, cheaper rates and plenty to do; the beach in the offseason is something you should be planning yesterday. Many people think cooler temperatures and fewer open businesses means nothing fun is going on in the town, but those people couldn’t be more wrong.

Your Wallet Will Thank You

always cuts her rental rates for the fall, winter and early spring months. “It’s great to own a condo in Ocean City, it’s even greater when people are renting from you all year long because the rates are so much cheaper,” she says. “People love the beach even when it’s cold, so it’s a great way to allow anyone and everyone a vacation.” Pomeroy, in fact, says that her favorite time to visit OC is during the offseason. Pomeroy says she slices her rates almost in half during the offseason. By doing so, she still gets a multitude of renters, especially during the

weekends that are filled with events.

Festival Season Has Arrived

So you want to book a cheap room but you’re afraid that you’ll be bored, right? Well, there is still SO much to see and do. Festivals take over the town during the fall months. Starting with Sunfest and ending with Winterfest, you will never be bored. Just pick your weekend and plan. Sunfest is one of the most popular free festivals OC holds after Labor Day. Held at the inlet, Sunfest features numerous events that will be

What’s the biggest reason you should be vacationing during the offseason? Money. Hotels and condominiums cut their rates and offer special deals and pricing for offseason vacationers. Imagine waking up to the smell of saltwater and a view of the bay for a weekend in October. Imagine how much better that would be, knowing you didn’t spend half of your savings to enjoy it! A condominium owner in OC, Lori Pomeroy,

fun for everyone. During all four days of the festival, there are multiple free performances by local artists who prep the stage for the evening’s headlining concert. Each year, the concerts get bigger and better. In the past, the Beach Boys, Eddie Money and Wynonna and the Big Noise are just a few the major headliners that performed at Sunfest in the past. There’s no telling who Sunfest will be bringing next year. If Sunfest doesn’t sound like it’s for you, how about Winefest? Every year, OC holds the wine tasting event on the beach. First, you buy a ticket to gain entry to either day of the event and then you get a souvenir wine glass and samples of the finest wines on the sand. Not only are you drinking great wine on the beach, but OC knows nothing goes better with wine than food, music and a free Designated Driver. So you can be worry free while enjoying your wine on the beach. Maybe you don’t like music or drinking? Don’t worry, there’s plenty to be offered from the event that is Endless Summer Cruisin’ Weekend. Cars from all over come to OC to show off what they’ve got. Whether you just want to watch cars drive the strip or see them up close at the Convention Center, it’s a car lovers dream. This event is always a big hit. If you’re a food lover, then you’ll think OC’s annual Restaurant Week was made just for you. Long time OC beach-goer Allison Caudill says, “I always try to plan a trip to OC during Restaurant Week. It’s such an experience. You can try foods that you’ve always wanted to or just eat some of your favorites.” Caudill says the best part about Restaurant Week is how cheap the food is. She says that’s what always keeps her coming back. “You get a great deal on some of the best food. It’s just a really fun time, especially because I love food so much,”

“I personally see my dogs as part of the family,” Monahan says, “So i love when i can take them everywhere with me at the beach!

she says with a smile. Finally, one of the most amazing “fests” OC holds is Winterfest of Lights. The whole town gets covered in over one million light bulbs and has fantastic displays to see. It’s a holiday extravaganza that the whole town takes pride in participating in. This is a great opportunity for beach lovers to take a holiday vacation without missing out on that sweet holiday feel you get from home.

Another great reason to vacation during the offseason is for the simple fact that dogs are finally allowed on the beach and boardwalk. During the summer, dogs are not allowed to be on the beach or boardwalk because there are just too many people. So, pet owners you can rejoice during the offseason. Michal Monahan, owner of two Labradors, always loves coming to the beach in early April. “I personally see my dogs as part of my family, so I love when I can take them everywhere with me at the beach,” she says. Monahan says her favorite part of bringing

her dogs to the beach is the boardwalk. “I can walk them up and down the boardwalk and they’ll never get bored,” she says. “They are always happy to find French fries or just go jump around in the sand and water.” No matter what you love about the beach during the summer, you’re sure to find something you love even more during the offseason. Whether you enjoy the peace and quiet of fewer tourists, the exciting festivals OC has to offer or just

walking your dog on the beach, offseason OC has something for everyone. The peace and serenity of the offseason will always keep you coming back. With all the things to do during the offseason in OC, it’s a wonder they call it the offseason!
