Learning Outcome 1 Brief: Analyse the planning cosiderations and processes involved in magazine production. From a set list of magazine types (see below) you are required to select two different samples of magazines and produce a detailed report in no less than 800 words that covers the following areas:

terminology — you must show correct usage of this
•
procedures — this must include production timetables, use of grids and allocation of space for editorial and advertising, the production process, and distribution channels

typography — the impact of content on typography, and the quality implications of alternative production processes layout — the use of page grids to design the layout and determine advertising positions, and the quality implications of alternative production processes financial implications — quality factors and cost implications of two production processes, and two distribution channels
The report should be typed and neatly presented on A4 paper. Graphs, diagrams and images may be used to support your content and overall presentation. Remember to spell check you document! There are a number of supportive handouts and power points available in hard copy and digital format on the College Server and Unit Folder. Magazine types that you can chose from: Low Production Cost Magazines: ie Trade Journals - Design Week, Marketing Weekly, Auto Express etc Weekly Current Affairs- -Newsweek, Private Eye etc High Production Cost Magazines: Health & Lifestyle Magazines - ie Hello, Vogue, Loaded, GQ, Mens Health Home Living - ie Country homes & Interiors Sport/Hobbies - Golf World, Digital Photo, etc The assessment should be carried out under unsupervised, open-book conditions. You may draw on experience, textbooks, presentations, personal notes and the internet. Note: Magazine choices must be approved by your tutor prior to commencing your report. Reassessment is available through a resubmission of the report with corrections made.
