St Peter's Sixth Form Prospectus

Welcome to St Peter’s Sixth Form

Thank you for taking an interest in our Sixth Form. At St Peter’s School we know every student. Not only their name, their strengths and their interests, but also what they need to do to become successful adults in the future.

We encourage our Post-16 students to be positive role models for our younger students. From delivering assemblies on Macmillan Cancer Support to speaking to parents and prospective students, our sixth formers are able to demonstrate their maturity and desire to help others. Such leadership opportunities support students to develop the skills that industry wants – the confidence to speak to a variety of audiences, the ability to work effectively with different people and the willingness to take on responsibility. Taking part in such extra-curricular opportunities is important as a young person develops into a successful adult. At St Peter’s School there is an ever-growing range of activities for students to participate in.

The range of qualifications we offer allows students to move on to university, higher level apprenticeships and employment. Our students have a strong track record of securing places at prestigious universities or with high profile local employers. Being part of a Trust of schools has many strengths and we are proud to have been part of The Cam Academy Trust since 2016.

Grades are important as they open opportunities for a student for the rest of their lives. But grades are not the only focus for St Peter’s School as we believe that, for a student to achieve the highest possible grades, they must be cared for and valued as an individual. To provide the best quality pastoral care, our staff have been carefully trained in the needs of Post-16 students. We, as a school, work with a variety of organisations who give students, staff and parents specialist advice and guidance.

Students choose to come to St Peter’s Sixth Form because they are confident that they will achieve success. As a result of the positive relationships between students and staff, good quality teaching, and support and guidance, our Post-16 students achieve examination results that demonstrate they have made excellent progress at St Peter’s School.

If you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to contact the St Peter’s Sixth Form team.

The Sixth Form Student Leadership Team

When looking at where you want to go to continue your education, there are many aspects you need to consider. These include the quality of teaching, support from staff and the extra-curricular opportunities which are available. The access to new opportunities enhance the Sixth Form experience, whether that is supporting younger students and doing voluntary work, or completing programmes like Duke of Edinburgh, a Mental Health and First Aid Qualification and work experience.

After looking at various Post-16 options, we are proud to be students at St Peter’s as we feel supported in our studies both academically and personally. The Sixth Form team enables us to enjoy coming to school, while helping us attain highly. Also, the relatively small size of our Sixth Form means that students and teachers are able to build good relationships with each other, and students are able to receive one-to-one support from their subject teachers.

With a wide variety of subjects to choose from, students leave at the end of Year 13 with the knowledge and understanding needed for their higher education. The career advisors within the school allow students to receive information to help progress to their future careers. This progression is monitored on a regular basis throughout our time in sixth form, with support always available from staff.

We are really happy at St Peter’s Sixth Form and think that you will be too. The real sense of community and friendship means that we are excited to come to school every day. We know that whenever there is a problem, all staff will be happy to help and will ensure that our time here is both enjoyable and worthwhile. We wish you the best of luck in your Sixth Form application and we look forward to welcoming you to St Peter’s Sixth Form.

Study programmes

There is a large number of clubs and opportunities that students can take part in, but also lead on. These opportunities allow us to grow as individuals.
– STUDENT, 2024

Support and guidance

We pride ourselves on the guidance that we offer all students in the Sixth Form, whether it is linked to progress, welfare or careers.

The Student Support Manager and the Head of Sixth Form liaise with teachers and monitor students’ progress on every step of their journey. The transition from GCSE to A-Level can sometimes be challenging, and we therefore believe that communication between staff, students and parents is vital.

In addition to the Sixth Form team, students also have access to Amber Walker, the school’s Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) officer, who is always on hand to help with CVs, applications for apprenticeships and jobs, and advice about future career intentions. For those students wanting to go to university, Linda Winwick, our UCAS Lead, will help students and parents understand the application process, and will ensure that all students have the best possible personal statement before it is sent off.

What we do to enable sixth form students achieve their potential:

• Nurture talent and encourage individuality

• Provide one-to-one support

• Offer careers advice

• Give assistance at every stage of the university entrance procedure

Enrichment opportunities

Giving students the opportunity to take part in activities outside their timetabled lessons enables them to further develop their skills and knowledge, and helps to set their university and job applications apart from others. In an environment where everybody is competing for a limited number of university places and apprenticeships, having the chance to take part in additional activities, like the range we offer, is vital. We are very pleased to be able to offer the following enrichment activities to students in the Sixth Form:

• Duke of Edinburgh Award

• National Citizen Service

• Student Mentoring – both academic and pastoral

• Lesson support

• Fitness Qualifications

• Educational visits

• Volunteering

• Fundraising activities – Race for Life, Macmillan Coffee Morning, Children in Need and many more

• Theatre visits

• Social Events such as the Leavers’ Ball

Work experience

For some students, work experience is an important element of their study programme, as it gives them the opportunity to see what the world of work is really like. We have created some great partnerships with local employers, and students have participated in work experience or work shadowing at the following places:

• Local primary schools

• Hinchingbrooke Hospital

• Leonard Cheshire Homes

• Addenbrooke’s Hospital

• Local GP surgeries

• In-school ICT department

Student views

Personal development allows us to explore issues from the real world. We enjoy meeting and listening to people who have experienced such issues.

– STUDENT, 2024

I absolutely loved my time in Sixth Form, and it was truly a transformative period for me. The teachers were incredibly supportive, always ready to guide and inspire me to reach my full potential. Some of my favourite memories come from the two years spent in Sixth form, filled with laughter, growth, and unforgettable experiences. It was in sixth form that I made the most amazing friends, bonds that have lasted beyond school and will stay with me forever. Enjoy every moment, as these years can be some of the best in your life!

The Sixth Form team offer a high level of pastoral care with a team who lend their time to support the emotional wellbeing of students.

St Peter’s Sixth Form is an inspiring place for young people. The teaching staff and Sixth Form team all want their students to learn, aspire and exceed their own expectations. St Peter’s is like a family to me, having studied there for 7 years, and the support I received was truly amazing. There were so many opportunities for both academic and social development within the school community and this really helped with my university application. The team supported me with my application as well as the interview, which really boosted my confidence. When I felt like I couldn’t do it, the team was there and without their support I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m truly thankful that I went to St Peter’s and would encourage other people considering sixth form to go there too!

The teachers and careers team at St Peter’s Sixth Form are always happy to help whenever needed, from an educational standpoint and a personal standpoint. They’ve helped me in terms of applying and submitting applications for university and also on a personal level in terms of mental health – they’ll always go above and beyond to make sure every student succeeds in their future careers!

Our family of schools gives us a fantastic opportunity to guide children on their educational journey from aged 3 to 18 with our commitment to ‘Excellence for All’.

Every single pupil is supported to achieve their very best and be well prepared for the future.

The Trust is headed by our CEO Claire Heald, who joined us in 2024.

Our staff work closely together, sharing best practice to ensure the best possible education for all pupils.

Our aim is a simple one – we want educational excellence for all, with our academies working at the heart of, and serving, their local communities.

Our core principles

At the heart of The Cam Academy Trust are six principles which drive everything we do. These are:

The excellence principle – educational provision must be excellent for all pupils in all our schools.

The comprehensive principle – our schools welcome all pupils, whatever their starting points and abilities.

The broad education principle – education in our schools is broadly based and should incorporate a wide educational experience for all pupils, including strong provision of the arts, sport, physical education and technology as well as academic subjects.

The community principle – our schools should sit at the heart of their communities and provide for more than just the pupils.

You can read more about our principles and values on the Trust website at www.catrust.co.uk 1 3 2 4 5 6

The partnership principle – we expect our schools to work in partnership with others for mutual benefit, not just within the Trust but with others locally and nationally, as well as with other organisations.

The international principle – all our schools should have a clear international emphasis in their provision both within and beyond the formal curriculum.
