small islands... ...big skies
Scilly today 28 miles Sou’ Sou’ West off mainland Cornwall lie a group of five inhabited islands with a hundred or so smaller islands, islets and rocks which make up the little archipelago that is the Isles of Scilly. Ravaged by Winter storms and bathed by Summer sun these truly are the ‘fortunate isles’. Since prehistoric times man has lived on Scilly and although Tourism now forms the basis of the islands economy that was not always so. Burning kelp for iodine, pilotage, ship building and the sea, potatoes and flowers all created their own economies in past times. Today Scilly is home to just over 2,000 people who welcome visitors to the islands every year. The charm of this little group captures the hearts of many and see’s people returning again and again for their fix of ‘Scilly Magic’. Scilly, with it’s ozone saturated air, it’s white sands and azure waters has an uncanny ability to embrace you in time and space. It will unwind your tensions, captivate and bewitch you and return you to a time you thought was lost. The following pages are just a few little snippets of the islands which we hope will entice you to seek out the true peace and beauty that is the Isles of Scilly. tg
