“A home where the fire burns
bright, where the hearts are happy and light, where love and reverence reign—That’s heaven brought to earth again.” I collect old artwork with sayings and poems about home and family. This particular saying is on a large wooden banner from the 1920’s and it was given to me by my mother. It has a special place on our mantle. I grew up with it in my home and it has always been a part of my life. I was pleased when my mother brought it to me and placed it on my mantle. But life tends to get going and sometimes when you have looked at something your whole life, you begin to overlook it. How easy it is in my busy bustling day-to-day activities to forget to take in this saying in my home, and forget that this is truly what a home is. The home we have made for our family is our home. No matter how tattered the furniture has become with three teenage boys, or how badly I need to clean behind the refrigerator or everywhere else for that matter (I am a terrible housekeeper and I know it). No matter who is still in the nest and who has flown the nest. No matter who is arguing with whom, or who is helping the other one out. No matter how busy or distracted we become, all my family really cares about is that home is always here. There is always someone excited to see them. That in this home we have created, they know they are always loved and respected, and that this home provides them with a little piece of heaven on earth. “Keep the fires burning bright, keep your hearts happy and light, love and respect those you share your home and life with and every chance you get, hold them close and tight.”

Hi, my name is Ruby Kate and I started Harrison ROCKS.
I am 9 years old (almost 10!). I have been painting since I was four. I love to paint. It is one of my favorite things to do. I mostly paint on canvas but in the last year I have started to paint on rocks. I first got the idea of starting Harrison ROCKS from seeing it in other cities and then most of all my orange cat, Bubba, is very inspiring. When I am sad, he makes me happy. Not everyone has a Bubba. I found a rock that looked like a cat’s face and I painted it to look like a cat. I thought that it would pretty cool if my cat rock made someone else happy like Bubba makes me happy. And that’s really how this all began. We took the cat rock out to a park in Harrison and I’m sure it made someone’s day. That’s really what the rocks are all about. If someone asked me why I started Harrison ROCKS, I would tell them I want to change the world and I would tell them I want to make people smile and brighten their day. I get the rocks from a creek on our farm. It has 100s of rocks of all shapes and sizes. I have talked my little brothers into helping me get the rocks, haul them back up to the house, and even wash the dirt off them. I ask my family to help me with the rock program. My brothers are not the best artists but they have fun painting the rocks. My mom is an awesome artist and my dad is just kind of so-so about painting rocks. He still helps me though. When my friends or Nonnie come over, we will paint as many rocks as we can. Everyone has a blast doing it. My mom and Dad drive me around town to hide the rocks after we have them painted. My grandma hides the rocks for us too. We usually put them in parking lots, playgrounds, park benches, churches, near walking paths, baseball fields, etc. We just got

back from a family vacation and we placed my rocks in states from Arkansas all the way to Colorado!!! I took a picture of myself leaving the rocks in 4 states. It’s super exciting to see how far my rocks have traveled. I have rocks in AZ, TX, CO, TN, OK, NM, SD, KS, AR and a few more. My mom helped me create a Facebook page, Harrison ROCKS. This is my favorite part because I get to see when other people post pictures of rocks they found around town and I get to see the rocks as they travel around the country! We always write Harrison ROCKS on the back of the rock with the Facebook symbol so people know where to find our page. A lot of the time I will see my own rock on the page. That is crazy exciting to see my own rock make someone else smile on Facebook. It feels amazing and it makes me feel so special to know that I did that. I also like to see what other kinds of rocks people paint. I have seen some great rocks with emojis, 103-D Industrial Park Rd, Harrison, Arkansas • (870) 741.3441

alligator teeth, and a sharp triangle painted like a duck’s face and bill. At first we were the only people putting out rocks for like 2 months, so it is really great to see the idea spreading and people painting rocks and having fun. My mom and I have “Ruby’s Rocks” kits for people to use for rock painting groups at daycares, nursing homes and places like that. We have everything in the bucket people need to paint about 15-20 rocks. I hand select the rocks from my creek for the buckets. I try to pick ones that are flat and have enough good space for painting. I wash them and make sure to write our logo on the back before handing over the kit. I have given a few talks to kids and adults about my rock program. I feel so special because people look like sunshine when they paint my rocks. I think they are all happy and that makes me happy. I feel like my cat, Bubba. Sunshine- I am spreading sunshine and I feel great about that. CH

Tell me about the beard oils.
The beard oils soften the hair and relieve itch. They contain natural oils such as jojoba, apricot oil, castor oil, as well as essential oils. They are packed with nutrients including vitamins A, D, and E. The oils closely match the natural oils produced by your skin, so it’s easily absorbed by your face and beard creating soft to the touch beard and nourished skin. The essential oils also provide benefits such as reducing acne, reducing itching, they have antibacterial properties, anti-inflammatory properties, and also a big thing is stimulating hair follicles for beard growth and stronger, longer hair. Basically, they will nourish the skin under your beard and make your beard softer, it will grow in thicker, and give it a nice, healthy shine.
QA QA
Q: Buffalo River A: Beard Co. is a new business in northwest Arkansas offering a unique line of grooming products for men and women. I met with entrepreneur Colby Carter to discuss his venture, its founding, and its future.
What about your beard balms?
I market these as a universal balm. They’re a great moisturizer for your face, hands, feet, arms, and legs. I make it with pure Shea butter and local beeswax. So if you have a longer beard, the beeswax helps tame it, gives it some shape, calms the unruly hairs. My wife uses it for her legs. After a shower, she uses it to moisturize. She’s actually thrown away all of her other moisturizing products. The girls I work with at the bank, they bought some and they love it. They use it on their arms, on dry skin. I have a buddy who has really dry skin on his hands. They crack, they bleed. He’s used medicated Gold Bond and other products. He bought a can of our beard balm and put it on his hands and they started to heal almost instantly.
QA
Q: A:
Tell me about your business and the products you sell.
We make beard products. Beard oils, beard balms, beard wash, and we have a lot of other products we’re coming up with. All of our products are handmade at our house in small batches. We make them from start to finish. We don’t outsource anything. We use all natural ingredients. So, you get a premium product.
Q: A:
Tell me about your beard wash.
This is the new product I’ve come up with. Why use a separate soap for your beard? Well, regular shampoos contain a lot of harmful chemicals that can strip away necessary natural oils leaving your face itchy and dry. While our beard wash provides a thorough clean, it also contains oils that can help balance what has been washed away.
Without these oils your beard can dry out and hairs will break off, leaving a frizzled, coarse mass of hair on your face. Your beard should enhance your style, not detract from it. Our beard wash will help you obtain the clean, well-groomed appearance you work to achieve.
Q: A:
So, when did you get started?
I’ve had a beard for three years now and a couple years ago I stumbled onto beard products. I bought some online, they were kind of expensive, and I tried them out and I could instantly tell that the itch went away, my beard started growing in fuller, it had a nice, healthy shine to it, it just looked like I took care of it. For a year, I batted the idea around about making my own products, starting my own business. I always wanted to start my own business, I just didn’t know what. Then for my birthday this year in January my wife surprised me.
Q: A:
How so?
She had done a bunch of research, got a bunch of products, developed a business plan for me, set things up with Amazon, and she said, “Hey, man, you need to do this. This is a good idea, you want to do this, you have a passion for it. I’ll help in any way I can.” She’s the reason. She’s a huge part of what got this going. She designed the logo, she developed the website. I just have to give a big shout out to my wife.
Q: A: Q: A:
Sounds like she’s your business partner.
She is. She’s my business partner.
So, it’s just you and your wife.
Just me and my wife. She helps me make the products, she’s made all of my product descriptions, it’s me and her at craft shows, I mean she has helped a lot.

Q: A:
Where does the majority of your business come from?
Mainly online through our website. I’ve had orders from Colorado, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Texas. Most of my business does come from around here. We’re really active on Instagram and Facebook, always promoting the business. We’re now starting to hit craft fairs regularly. Word is starting to spread and business is picking up.
Q:
On your website, I saw something about a becoming a Brand Ambassador. Tell me about that.
A:
Basically, I’m on Instagram finding guys who have nice beards, who care about them, they obviously use product, and who have a lot of followers. I reach out to them and give them a little pitch and if they’ll help me promote the product and refer orders in, I give them free product. I’ve got one guy in Pennsylvania who has referred several orders to me. So, I’m really hoping to get that going and get some ambassadors from all over.
Q:
Social media is such an indispensable tool for business marketing these days.
A: Q:
I don’t know how anyone can run a business without it.
Sounds like you’ve really done your homework and you’re off to a great start. Is this the first business you’ve started? What entrepre-
14 Come Home / Volume 3, Issue 6
neurial experience do you have?
A:
This is my first business but I don’t have much entrepreneurial experience. I worked at Hudson’s Supermarket and worked my way into management. So, I gained some management responsibilities and learned different ways to do things. Then I started working at a mortgage company and I learned a lot of things there. Then I started working at a bank and met some really smart people there who’ve kind of helped me take the right steps to get started. But I don’t really have any entrepreneurial experience. I don’t have a degree or anything like that. It’s just something I’m passionate about. I figured why not and gave it a shot.
Q:
Tell me a little bit about yourself. How old are you? Where you from?
A:
I’m twenty-three. I’m from Forest City, Arkansas. It’s around Memphis. It’s kind of a rough area, honestly. If you look up worst cities in Arkansas, Forest City is on the list. It’s in the top five. My dad got me out of there and got me in a much better area. I got to thank him for that. So, we moved up here to Harrison when I was about five. So, I’ve grown up here, went to school here, met the love of my life here. Y’know there’s a lot of young people my age here who want to get out of here. I’ve fallen in love with the area, it’s beautiful. My wife and I don’t plan on going anywhere, we love it.
Q:
From what I’ve seen so far, you’re proof that if you’re
passionate about something and you believe in your product, you believe in yourself, and you’re committed to working hard, the sky’s the limit. What’s in the future for Buffalo River Beard Co.?
2018 Ford Expedition
A:
This isn’t going to be just about beards. My hope is to grow it big enough that I open a store and carry all sorts of men’s and women’s grooming products that are all-natural. We want to get into deodorants, pomades, sea salt sprays. It’s starting as a beard company, and I have a passion for it, but it’s going to grow into all sorts of possible products. My stepdad runs a sawmill in Crossett, Arkansas, and I’ve got him working on some handcrafted wooden combs for me. They’ll be available on our website here shortly.
Q:
Well, we hope this article brings you and Buffalo River Beard Co. and this area some more business and some more exposure.
A:
I appreciate that. I know a lot of people who have misconceptions of the beard. You don’t have to be a hillbilly or a biker to have a beard, to care for it, to make it look good, to groom it. Our motto is: Be Your Best Self. We want to help each and every person be their best self, be their most confident self, and give them the tools to help them achieve that. That’s what we strive for.

Just beyond the meadow where my grandparents once lived the creek flows in a westerly direction from gentle hills filled with cedars. That is where their voices are even now. The childish whispers and laughter of us, our youth, grandchildren of a patriarch and matriarch, decent people always holding tightly to family and gathering often to be close to us. We cousins would run across that meadow and when we reached the flowing water we would plunge in as if our lives depended on it, and perhaps our lives did depend on it. And now in middle age where do we go? I wonder some nights when I awaken in the dim room where I sleep if they could hear me if I shouted their names. My heart longs to plunge in to a stream, to swim around ageless stones, to open my eyes under water as if I could breathe through a smile, and be free from the reality that time lacks compassion and we get older. So I take my daughter to the Buffalo River valley, camp at Steele Creek campground and awaken to a foggy road that we walk along to the river where a giant stone waits for me to climb and slide from into morning water the temperature of summers past. They have all moved on from my life but their voices are here now as I write these words. The creek is tiny but still there in northeast Arkansas near Hardy. As I sat in the waters of the Buffalo I reminisced about the shallow waters of youth where the fish nibbled at our feet and the crayfish darted in wild circles evading our grasp. My daughter, the youngest of my three children, seems to understand that I am still a child and she grabs her phone to photograph me climbing the huge boulder and sliding in to the river. In the depths of the water around the polished stones, flowing downstream slowing, are their voices. In every clear stream I hear them. David, Cindy, Sherry, Heather, Andy, Brian, Randy, Bob, Tom, and Mandy. They smile through droplets of thought and their lives belong to each of us intertwined in memories, always wishing we could go back and fix broken things. Ah but it was perfect nonetheless. Yes, we are all still children. CH

Powell Feed
WISHING GOOD LUCK to all YOUTH participating at the DISTRICT FAIR! PHOTOGRAPHS courtesey of LeBecca Brasil with a special thanks to the Newton County Fair
For three generations, the Powell family has been in the business of supporting young people in agriculture.
They began manufacturing livestock feed in Green Forest in 1942 and have since expanded to nine retail locations and four feed mills. They are family owned and customer based. They want to be there even for their youngest customers. Over the years the Powell family has been supportive of young agriculturists through many youth organizations such as 4H, Future Farmers of America, and county and district fair organizations. Recently the Powells, in conjunction with VitaCharge and Sure Champ have provided signs for those showing at the fair to place in their pens. Powell Feed takes pride in the products they provide and in turn want their young
customers to feel that same since of pride and accomplishment when they compete. The Powells believe in the helping the next generation of farmers and livestock growers. They want to support all their customers in all their endeavors. The Powell family have been around a long while and have no plans to be anywhere else. They want to provide the best service to their customers and provide for all their needs. If they don’t have it right now, they’ll do their best to get it. Come on out and meet the people behind Powells, we think you’ll like them. When you stop by, tell them thank you for all the support they give our young people. After all, they are our future. CH

Green chili chicken / enchiladas Ingredients 2 cups chicken, cooked & shredded 2 cups monterey jack cheese, shredded 1 - 19 oz. can Las Palmas Green Chile Enchilada sauce 1 cup sour cream 6-8 corn tortillas
Instructions 1. In a small bowl, combine chicken, 1 cup cheese, green chiles, salt and pepper. 2. In a small skillet, bring enchilada sauce to boil. Remove from heat. 3. Dip each tortilla into heated sauce for a few seconds to soften. 4. Spoon ⅓ cup of chicken mixture and 2 tablespoons sour cream down center for each tortilla. I usually put the sour cream in a sandwich bag and cut the bottom tip which makes it easier to squirt right down the center. 5. Roll the tortilla and place seam-side down in 8x8 (or 9x9) inch baking dish. 6. Pour remaining heated enchilada sauce over top. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup cheese. 7. Bake 20 minutes at 350. Makes 4 servings.

adjust to your preference 16 oz frozen chopped spinach defrosted, drained, and squeezed to remove excess water 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup chicken broth
2 1/2 lbs lean ground turkey 3/4 cup bread crumbs
2 large eggs
Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Prepare a large baking sheet by spraying with cooking spray. I actually line my baking sheet with foil and then spray with cooking spray. 2. In a frying pan on medium heat, heat olive oil until hot. Then add onion, garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Sauté until onion is tender (about 5-6 minutes total time). 3. Add spinach to pan and combine with onion mixture. Add Worcestershire sauce and chicken broth and mix well to combine. Cook until most of the liquid has cooked out (evaporated). I don't have much liquid in my pan after I combine all these, but it will depend on how well you drained your spinach. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. 4. In a large bowl, combine the turkey/beef, bread crumbs, and egg. Add cooled onion/spinach mixture to the meat. I do all of this step with my hands, but you can use a spoon if you prefer. 5. With your hands, create meatballs that are about 1 - 1 1/2 inches in diameter and place them on the baking
sheet. Leave a little bit of space between each meatball. When you are done shaping your meatballs, you will probably have about 40-42 meatballs from this recipe. Don't need that many? Freeze them after baking or cut this recipe in half (but I say freeze them and then you've done the work only once and have a future meal). 6. Bake until your meatballs are cooked through with an internal temperature of 160 degrees F - which was about 20 minutes for my oven. Remove from oven and serve as desired.
