These illustrations were done in colored pencil. The floral compositions and illuminations are inspired by manuscripts from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, notably the Grandes Heures of Anne of Brittany (1503–1508), illuminated by Jean Bourdichon, and the Rothschild Prayerbook (c. 1500–1520), completed by several Flemish illuminators. The medieval architecture and the scene in the city are inspired by The Allegory of Good and Bad Government (1338–1339), frescoes painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Siena, Italy.

This is Milo. Milo is a knight. And like most knights, he is brave and proud.
Milo’s father was a knight, his father’s father was a knight, and so on and so forth. You get the picture. Milo takes being a knight very seriously. No time for fun and games, he’s got work to do, like scrubbing his shield or polishing his sturdy armor.
Besides, Milo sleeps in his armor,
he drinks in his armor,
he even rakes in his armor. He never takes it off!
Milo has friends too. Most of them are knights, but sometimes he wishes he could have other friends, like the court jesters, who are always up to something fun.
He wishes he could be like them, dancing and laughing without a care.
But Milo is a knight, and knights will be knights.
“Those jesters are so inconsiderate anyways. I’m the only one who can protect this colony!” thought Milo.
