Story by André Marois
WE WOULD PRETEND Art by Gérard DuBois
Translation by Nick Frost and Catherine Ostiguy
Kids, it’s nice out — go play outside!
Yes, papa!
Yes, Mr. Martin!
Do you want to play pretend?
We would pretend there was a castle
in a faraway kingdom
Oh, right! And we would travel to it.
We would climb the dungeon wall and use it as our lookout.
But then, we would see a flying monster and begin to follow it.
It would lead us to the lair of the giant Gourdus, the dreaded King of Pumpkins.
At that point, we would need magical powers.
We would become invisible so Gourdus couldn’t see us
and we would use our special spears to fend off his guards.
Out of nowhere, we would surprise Gourdus in broad daylight
because he would not have seen us coming!
Then, we would become King and Queen of Pumpkins
and everyone would be very jealous.
