“THE CHRISTIAN CONTAGION”
By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com _____________________________________
“Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop – a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” – Matthew 13:8
The year 2020 will go down in history as a year of unexpected and unprecedented challenges. Not the least of which has been the spread of COVID-19. The transmission rate is said to be 2.5 which means for every one person infected with the virus, two and a half others will also be infected. It is not hard to do the math to see how fast the disease is able to spread.
Here is a thought: What would happen in our world, if our love for God became more contagious? There is a Biblical precedent for this. A prime example is the ministry of Jesus on earth. In Mark 1:28 we read, “News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.” The story of our Lord’s resurrection is another excellent example. Another example is our Lord’s great commission (Matthew 28:20). The miracle of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) is another powerful example. The concept of contagion is repeated in Apostle Paul’s strategy for spreading the faith (2 Timothy 2:2). Here is how it works:
It begins with us.
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the seed of God’s Word finds a home in our hearts. When properly nurtured, the seed, empowered by the Holy Spirit, begins to grow within us. Little by little the character of Christ is formed in us.
It spreads to others.
Remember the words of the poet, “A bell is not a bell ‘til you ring it. A song is not a song ‘til you sing it. Love in your heart is not put there to stay. Love is not love…’til you give it away” (Mary Martin). The world becomes a better place.
FOOD PANTRY
OPEN REGULAR HOURS Mon. 1:00pm-3:00pm Tues. & Thurs. 10:00am-12noon Wed. 3:00pm-5:00pm 134A W. Allegan Street, Otsego 269-694-9005 Clients will not be allowed to come into the Pantry. Please park in front of the Pantry, wearing a mask and a smiling volunteer will greet you wearing a mask. Your order will brought to and placed in your vehicle. For financial requests please call 269-694-9005 and leave a message. Thank you & God Bless. St. Vincent de Paul is able to serve Otsego, Plainwell and Martin School districts only.
Peter is a 36 yr. old high functioning autistic. He is very thin around 130 lbs., 5’8”, black hair, brown eyes. He was last wearing a blue striped shirt, brown boots and a green coat and carrying a black backpack. Last seen on November 2nd when the Plainwell Police brought him to his apartment in Plainwell from a walkabout. He is not carrying any identification. He loves video games so if you ask what is his favorite it might put him at ease. Please call his Mom (616-834-2931) so that she can come and pick him up. Or call the Allegan County Public Safety at 269-673-3899.
Faith
A generation following the death of Christ, Christianity was beginning to infiltrate Rome. At the same time Emperor Nero, considered one of history’s greatest criminals, was on a path of destruction. In the summer of 64 A.D. Rome suffered a tragic fire which consumed three quarters of the city. The people blamed Nero and Nero blamed the Christians. It was the beginning of Christian martyrdom. During that turbulent time, Nero made a statement that speaks for the ages. “(Christians) are people such as the world has not seen hitherto, and their teaching is of a kind that the world has not heard of up to this time…” Jesus warned His disciples they would suffer persecution for His sake (Matthew 5:1-12). The fact is Christianity grew more during times of persecution. The saying is true, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church” (Tertullian). In other words, nothing can stop the spread of Christianity, not even persecution!
The point: The love of Christ is contagious! The question: Has anyone caught it from you lately?
Prayer: Dear Lord, we marvel at how a tiny seed of faith can multiply so fast in our world! We want to be a part of that! In Your strong name. Amen.

If you want a dog that is easy going, happy, friendly, loving, playful and silly - Prito is your guy!
Prito's perfect family would enjoy hanging out and playing fetch or talking a casual stroll with their dog, but also enjoy chilling on the couch, just relaxing and enjoying each other's company Prito is great to take on walks, but be ready for stops to roll in the grass. Although he does well walking with and being around other other calm dogs at the shelter, Prito will need to be the only pet in his forever home. Prito would enjoy a home with kids to play with. It is recommended that any children in his forever home are 12 years old and up. Prito is very well potty trained. He is 9.5 years old and weighs about 76 pounds. The Allegan County Animal Shelter staff and volunteers are really rooting for this awesome dog to find his forever family. He has been at the shelter too long - over 10 months! So if you know someone looking for a great senior dog, please tell them about Prito. Online adoption applications can be filled out at wishbonepetrescue.org.

| Why are Christmas Colors Red and Green?
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 21, 2020....Phone 694-9431
Many people may not get in the holiday spirit without decorations and all the trimmings. Chances are strong that if you have containers full of items just waiting to see the light of day again this holiday season, those items are red or green or some combination thereof. Red and green have become the traditional colors of Christmas, just as blue and white symbolizes Chanukah. But how did this color palette come to evolve?
Just like many traditions of Christmas, the red and green scheme has origins that pre-date the Christian celebration. Christmas has borrowed from many of the customs of winter solstice celebrations of ancient peoples, including the Celts. Ancient Celtic people revered holly plants, believing they brought beauty and good fortune in the middle of winter — a time when the landscape is normally bleak and holly plants thrive and stand out. Celts would regularly bring in sprigs of holly and decorate their homes with the plants, which feature shiny, serrated leaves and bright, red berries, as a way to guarantee a prosperous new year. Holly also came to be associated with the crown of thorns Jesus Christ was forced to wear during his crucifixion.
The custom of using red and green continued into the 14th century. Dr. Spike Bucklow, a research scientist at the University of Cambridge, says red and green also were used to paint medieval rood screens, which were partitions installed in churches to separate the congregation from the priest and altar. Dr. Bucklow notes that Victorians also extended the association of these colors as a physical boundary to another boundary: the marking of the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one at Christmastime.
While red and green had associations with Christmas in early times through holly and other sources, the connection was perhaps best solidified thanks to a man named Haddon Sundblom. Sundblom was an artist commissioned in 1931 by the Coca-Cola company to create an image of Santa Claus for the company’s upcoming holiday ads. Until this point, versions of Santa were rarely consistent, with his clothing vacillating between green, blue and red. He also

wasn’t the plump, jolly fellow associated with Christmas as we know him today, but rather thin and elf-like. Sundblom portrayed him as a chubby man wearing red robes, likely as a nod to CocaCola’s own red logo, even though the company denies the connection. Santa was featured in front of a green background. The ads proved popular and Sundblom’s Santa became the preferred depiction. Santa’s red robes perfectly complemented the green background and other green components of the holiday, such as Christmas trees and holly, that already had been solidified as Christmas imagery. Color plays a strong role in creating Christmas nostalgia. Red and green are put on vivid display throughout the season.

| Help Isolated Loved Ones This Holiday Season
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 21, 2020....Phone 694-9431
A phenomenon called “cabin fever” tends to set in around late autumn or in midwinter. Long hours of darkness coupled with cold, inclement weather often is a recipe for increased time spent indoors. For people who live alone, the effects of cabin fever might be more pronounced.
In addition to seasonal cabin fever, this year another factor comes into play: social distancing and voluntary quarantine as a result of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Even those who may venture outside to socialize, particularly around the holiday season, may be hesitant or unable to do so to help prevent the spread of the virus. In these instances, friends and loved ones can mitigate feelings of isolation in various ways.
• Schedule video chats. Video conferencing apps have become the communication vehicles of choice during the era of social distancing. Different applications and services continue to evolve and help people stay in touch. Plan regular chats, either once or twice per week with isolated or vulnerable people. Try to organize a large group chat on the holiday itself so no one has to spend Christmas or Chanukah alone. • Drop off supplies. Even though supermarket shop-from-home and other
delivery services have normalized somewhat since the start of the pandemic, treat individuals who may be isolated to some personalized attention. Put together care packages of supplies or holiday treats and deliver them in person so you can see the smiles that result from being able to visit with someone familiar.
• Send uplifting messages. Children or even adults can make personalized cards and mail them to loved ones at home or those who may be in long-term care facilities. Send new mailings every week or two so that residents always
have something to look forward to in the mail.
• Start a virtual club. A book club or another shared interest can be the catalyst for more frequent communication. A club puts everyone on the same page and enables them to come together, via phone or video chat, for a discussion. • Ask for help learning a new skill. Along the same vein as a virtual club, lessons on everything from woodworking to crochet to making favorite holiday recipes can be conducted online. Give

“On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree.”
The familiar lyrics of this tune are sung as part of Christmas caroling and holiday celebrations, reaching a crescendo each time singers belt out “five golden rings.” The song is an English Christmas carol that was written in 1720. While it references plenty of gift-giving, it’s easy to assume the song is about giving Christmas gifts. However, the 12 days in the song actually refer to the birth of Jesus Christ.
can mark the culmination of the Christmas season — with the last of gift-giving occurring on the Epiphany.
Gifting, hosting friends and family, attending religious services, participating in charitable events, or opening one’s home to neighbors and those who can use some companionship are all ways to make the 12 days of Christmas more special.

| Thanksgiving Quiche puts Sweet Potatoes
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 21, 2020....Phone 694-9431
Front and Center
Sweet potatoes are a favorite side dish at Thanksgiving dinner tables. Packed with vitamins, nutrients, fiber, and delectable flavor, sweet potatoes have earned their place on holiday dinner tables. While many holiday hosts bake, fry or mash their sweet potatoes, these beloved tubers can be prepared in other ways as well.
If you want to put a new twist on this Thanksgiving staple, whip up this recipe for “Sweet Potato Quiche,” courtesy of the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission. Submitted to the NC State Fair Tailgate Recipe Contest by Kristen Frybort, this recipe marries sweet tubers with decadent cheese, rich cream and savory spices. Sweet Potato Quiche Makes 8 servings
2 3⁄4 2-1/2 1/2
cups sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes cup yellow onion, diced tablespoons olive oil teaspoon salt Black pepper to taste
Egg mixture: 4 eggs 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon fresh rosemary, minced 1/2 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced 1-1/2 teaspoons salt teaspoon pepper 1/4 3
ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded Pre-baked deep dish pie crust
Preheat oven to 400 F. Mix together the first five ingredients and place on baking sheet. Roast in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
While sweet potatoes and onions are roasting, shred cheese and set aside. Whisk the egg mixture and set aside. Once potatoes and onions have finished roasting, spoon them into the pre-baked pie shell. Next, layer the shredded cheese on top of the sweet potatoes. Reduce oven to 375 F. Pour egg mixture over the cheese and potatoes. Place quiche in the oven on a center rack. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until eggs are set.

| TIPS FOR BAKING BETTER CHRISTMAS COOKIES
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 21, 2020....Phone 694-9431
Cookies and other baked treats are everywhere come the holiday season. It’s not uncommon to give cookies as gifts or arrive at holiday gatherings with cakes and other decadent desserts. Cookies are a classic holiday treat, and some families even build entire traditions around baking Christmas cookies.
Novice bakers making cookies for the first time may be a little overwhelmed when perusing recipes. Baking is a science, and sometimes it takes practice to get the results just right. However, there are some tips that can help yield better, buttery bounties.
Handle butter with care
Butter can make or break a cookie recipe, as butter is often the glue that holds the cookie together. Therefore, it is key to follow the directions carefully regarding how to handle butter. Smithsonian.com says to leave butter at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes to properly soften it. This takes patience, but fiddling with butter too much can damage its delectable integrity. While purists may say butter is best, margarine may be acceptable if it has a high fat content; otherwise, cookies may spread out and flatten. When it comes time to cream the butter with sugar, be sure to do so thoroughly to incorporate air into the butter and remove the grainy texture of the sugar.
“Light Up the Night” and the “Merry Mile” Plainwell City will host
for the entire month of December
To protect public health and slow the spread of COVID-19, the 2020 Tree Lighting Ceremony as it's been in the past is canceled. Though we won’t be able to gather as a community this year we can still celebrate the season, cherish the moments that are only possible during the holiday season, and celebrate the joy, gratitude, and love that make this time of year so special. The Tree will be placed on the plaza covered in lights, as usual. Residents are encouraged to continue their holiday traditions with their families of walking through the Hicks Park, down the River walk and Fannie Pell Park admiring the holiday lights and decorations, but, please ensure that safe distances can be maintained and health guidelines can be followed. Beginning Friday, Dec. 4 and for the entire month of December stroll through our downtown “The Merry Mile”, as all the shops will have decorations and window displays as if a parade were standing still; check out the Christmas Cards in the park, you may find Elves dancing around town with coupons, candy canes will be placed on the Christmas tree for children to take one or two please. You may spy Santa cruising through town in his convertible, so keep your eyes open. An outdoor Holiday Market on Saturdays Nov. 28, Dec. 5 & 12, from 10am to 2pm in Fannie Pell Park. Many of the shops will be offering small holiday festivities you can find on our FB Event Page “Light Up the Night”. There will be fun shopping events this month too. Community members are encouraged to support local businesses this Holiday Season, on Small Business Saturday, November 28 and throughout the season.
Measure flour properly
Measuring flour the right way can ensure cookies come out right. The Cooking Channel says to spoon the flour lightly into a dry measuring cup, then level it off with a knife. Do not dip the measuring cup into the flour or tap the knife against the cup. This will pack too much flour into the measuring cup and result in dry, tough cookies. Slow down the eggs
Add eggs one at a time to make sure each will emulsify properly with the fat in the butter. Adding eggs en masse may cause the emulsification to fail. Chill out
Follow recipes that call for chilling cookie dough carefully. This process is important for making sliced and shaped cookies. By chilling, the dough becomes more malleable for rolling and even slicing. Use a bottom rack
Too much heat may compromise cookie integrity. The food experts at Delish say to try moving cookies onto a lower rack in the oven if they aren’t retaining their shape when baked. Put an empty cookie sheet on the top rack. That will block the cookies from the most intense heat that rises to the top of the oven.
COLORING FUN
Mastering cookies takes a little patience and some trial and error. Once bakers get their feet wet, Christmas-cookie-baking becomes even more special.

| Shopping Locally Is Now More Crucial Than Ever
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 21, 2020....Phone 694-9431
The importance of shopping locally has been emphasized with increasing urgency in recent years. Events like Small Business Saturday and Plaid Friday have brought some muchneeded attention to the importance of shopping local, which is even more crucial now as so many small businesses try to survive the pandemic.
A poll from the trade group the National Federation of Independent Business reported that about half of all the businesses in the survey reported a 25 percent drop in sales since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, and roughly one in five businesses have seen sales decline by more than 50 percent. If the economic climate does not radically improve, 20 percent of small businesses won’t survive. According to NBC News, small businesses employ 60 million people in the United States, almost half of the nation’s private-sector employees. In addition, small businesses generate tax revenues that help communities by funding schools, maintaining parks and contributing to public safety programs. However, based on research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, even before COVID-19 spread across the world, only 20 percent of healthy small businesses had sufficient cash reserves to continue to operate if they experienced a revenue loss for two months. Some have been shuttered for much longer. Individuals looking for everything from clothing to home improvement services to office supplies can look to
small businesses to fill those needs.
• Look for small businesses for any and all of your shopping needs. Chances are items sold by big box retailers also are sold by small businesses. When the options are the same or similar, purchase from a small business instead of its big box competitor. • Readily provide recommendations of small businesses with which you have done business. Too often people are quick to complain about places that have failed them, but those same people don’t think to say kind words about companies that went above and beyond. Share great experiences on social media or through word of mouth.
• Talk to small businesses owners first if you have an issue. It’s tempting to go directly to social media to complain about something, but such complaints can have a dire impact. Always take issues to the manager or business owner first to see if a resolution can be reached. A manager may not be aware of an issue at all. Give small businesses a chance to make it right before taking things public. • If you own a small business, rely on other small businesses to fulfill your needs. Order supplies from fellow small business owners, seek the help of local financial advisors and tax professionals and use local suppliers and delivery personnel. Small businesses have experienced unprecedented setbacks due to COVID-19. By supporting small businesses, communities can help them regain stable footing.

Gifts cards are not meant for payments "If someone is asking you to put money on a gift card to pay them, it's a scam,” says the FTC's Patti Poss, a senior attorney in its Division of Marketing Practices. It's easy to second-guess how someone can fall for these ruses, but criminals are very persuasive, says Amy Nofziger, AARP's director of fraud victim support. They can keep victims on the phone to prevent them from getting an objective view from a trusted friend. Some even convince victims that they are about to be arrested for unpaid taxes and tell them exactly what cards to buy, usually iTunes, Google Play, Amazon or Steam. "Your blood pressure goes up, your adrenaline starts rushing and you think, I have to do whatever it takes to get out of this situation,” Nofziger says. "It doesn't matter your educational level or your financial level, we all can be put under that emotional ether to be victimized." Once a victim reads a gift card number and PIN over the phone — or sends a digital photo of the numbers — a criminal can immediately spend the funds online or sell the data on the dark web. Some crooks don't wait for a photo; they keep the victim on the phone until the numbers are read to them. Use gift cards only as gifts for people you know — and never for payments. Legitimate businesses and government agencies will never demand payment in gift cards. If your religious leader, grandchild or anyone else calls or emails and asks for money, first call them back to make sure it’s really them.

Gift cards now are being used in many scams: to make amends with the “Internal Revenue Service” for back taxes, to send funds to “grandchildren” who assert they've been in an accident and need help, to purchase “tech support” for imaginary computer problems and to pay “Social Security” to remedy supposed identity-theft problems. Except the purported recipients aren't real — they're all crooks, some part of criminal networks.

He could be found working on someone's car or helping remodel homes. He enjoyed fishing and later in life, as well as cooking as he had so many meals on the road! He also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino and gardening. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Surviving Jim are his siblings: sisters Nancy (Earl) Healy of Gobles and Judy Robertson of Otsego, and brother Bill Robertson of Plainwell as well as many nieces and nephews (great and great-great) and many cousins. He loved them all. Also surviving is special friend Lora Mooney and family, Joyce Shives of Oklahoma and countless other friends. Cremation has taken place. Graveside interment and a luncheon will be held in the spring for family and friends.
