“ROUNDABOUTS”
“Show me your ways, O Lord,
By Rev Dan Minor - revdm nor1945@gmail com
and I don t think it was a good-will gesture! Over time I have lear ned to manage them The main thing I have lear ned is to pay attention
In the Chr istian life, God has promised to guide us on the road of life, even when it may seem to be confusing Let us consider the words of the psalmist (above):
“SHOW ME”
A huge par t of paying attention is to focus on God
In Colossians 3:2 we read, “Set your minds on things above, not on ear thly things For you died, and your life is now hidden with Chr ist in God Are we paying attention to God?
“TEACH ME”
By paying attention to God we are showing God that we are teachable Do we really want to lear n His ways? The desire to lear n opens new avenues of God’s truth for us I remember a conversation some years ago with the late Delores Pulver I happened to comment that I seldom if ever preach the same ser mon twice because when I look at an old ser mon the Holy Spirit gives me new insights Her reply was “That s called Christian growth
“GUIDE ME”
Another component of paying attention to God is the willingness to follow God’s wisdom when it is given God speaks in many ways Here are just some of the ways God speaks to us
• The Bible (Psalm 119:105)
• Prayer (Mar k 9:23)
• The circumstances of life where we see God wor king (Romans 8:28)
• Inward impressions of the Holy Spir it (Romans 8:26-27)
May God help us to always seek His way
Join Chauncey
Don’t worry, I’m not going to talk about belly buttons When God went looking for a new king to replace Saul, he sent his prophet Samuel to select one of Jesse’s sons Jesse presented 7 of his 8 sons to Samuel starting with Eliab, the oldest Samuel was impressed with Eliab’s external appearance and assumed he would be the next king Eliab looked like a king on the outside, but he was not God’s choice God said to Samuel these powerful words, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7) God chose David to replace King Saul, not because of David’s external appearance but because of David’s internal character
Let’s be honest, we are tempted to spend more time working on our external appearance than our internal character Cultural trends confirm this We are a fitness culture that normalizes taking substances that could hinder our emotional and longterm physical well being in order to look “shredded” to others Cosmetic surgery is more accessible, affordable, and accepted today than ever before Some people will spend more time each day pursuing the perfect selfie to post on social media than they will expend on inner growth The beauty product industry is huge and still growing Why? Because we live in an outie culture
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with staying fit and looking good I exercise 4 times weekly The problem is the cultural trend that prioritizes external appearance to impress others over internal appearance to impress God When God goes looking to choose someone to accomplish his purposes, he isn’t concerned with your height, six pack abs, big biceps, or buns of steel He is looking into our hearts, into our souls And if we haven’t expended any effort or time to develop our inward character, God will look elsewhere for a heart committed to Him So, let’s thrive to be an innie not an outie!
COME WORSHIP JESUS WITH US THIS SUNDAY AT 10:40AM. We are a fr iendly, but not smother ing, growing congregation on mission to love and ser ve our community Our worship ser vices are shor t but impactful
We also have a fun-filled and safe program for kids ages 0-10
