place called Caesarea Philippi located near one of the main sources of the Jordan River at the foot of Mount Her mon On the plus side, it was where Peter made his famous confession of faith, You are the Chr ist, the son of the living God” (Luke 9:20) On the negative side, it was from that point forward that He began talking about His coming time of suffer ing, rejection, death and resurrection (Luke 9:22) That discloser to His disciples carr ied the r isk of losing their loyalty, love and fr iendship Although they never

Collectors were calling her daily She was stressed and anxious

The desperation led her to an online blog where people requested and shared financial advice Alyssa confessed her dismal debt and asked for advice on how to get out of the financial hole she dug for herself A man named David who frequented the blog made a shocking offer He wanted to pay Alyssa’s $50,000 debt so that she could start fresh He asked for nothing in return but gave her financial advice to change her poor spending habits Wow! I’ll bet that Alyssa would brag on David for as long as she lived And, I suspect that gracious generosity like that would transform her financial practices

Someone offers to pay your debt too, and it’s a debt far greater than $50,000 The bible tells us that we accrued an enormous debt because of our lack of love for God and for others We often complicate the definition of sin, but it is simply any word, thought, or deed done or not done due to a lack of love for God and people And “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23) That sounds like really bad news for broken people like me who have some debt due to sin But God turns this horrific reality into really good news

Like David for Alyssa, God offers to pay our debt for us, a debt he does not owe and a debt we cannot pay The debt was paid in full with the blood of Jesus shed for you and me on the cross (see Colossians 2:13-14) How do we ask God to cover our debt? It’s pretty simple Do you remember that cheesy old commercial for Life Call? An elderly woman falls to the ground and pleads, “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up ” (Check it out on Youtube- it’s hysterical!) God through Christ is ready to pay our debt All we need to do is pray with sincerity, “God, help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up I need you to pick me up by doing for me in Christ what I can’t do for myself ” If those words reflect genuine faith, your incalculable debt will be forgiven and your heart will be free
