Happy New Year! A new year is a good time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make, and resolve to follow through on those changes. It’s those dreaded New Year Resolutions that we need to keep (and we should), whether it is spending more time with your family, getting your financial house in order, reducing stress, becoming a healthier you, or volunteering to help others. Any change you resolve to do for becoming a better you is always a good one – so do it! Looking forward, we at Community Magazine are really excited for 2014. In March, we will be celebrating our 3rd anniversary, and this year we will be adding services to our business to better serve our customers, as well as rolling out some big news in the upcoming months. Our magazines are delivered monthly to over 35,000 homes and businesses in Aberdeen, Colts Neck, Keyport, Hazlet, Holmdel, Matawan and Lincroft – and we feel a large amount of social responsibility on our shoulders to bring you the good news in your communities. So we ask you, as our treasured readers, to keep sending in your thoughts and suggestions. You might not realize, but most of the stories on the pages you read are comprised of your fellow neighbors informing us about news they think should be in the magazine. Our name is Community Magazine, and that’s how we will remain, for the community! We thank “YOU” and look forward to being a part of your family and home every month! All my best to you in 2014,

Colts Neck Sisters Honored by Ashley Lauren Foundation Mary Larkin and Carol Stillwell will be honored at the 3rd Annual Butterfly Ball in 2014. STORY KAITLYN ANNESS PHOTO CREDIT RICHARD STEIGER Mary Ann Larkin and Carol Stillwell are being honored at the 3rd Annual Butterfly Ball in 2014.
Stillwell, President of Stillwell-Hansen, is the only authorized sales and service representative in Northern New Jersey for the Liebert Corporation. Both Stillwell and Larkin are being honored by the Ashley Lauren Foundation for the fundraising and volunteer efforts. “For Mary Ann and I, we are humbled. There are so many people that give so much of their time. For us, the thing we are most proud of is that hopefully through being honored we will be able to reach out to the community of people we know that will support this event, and be able to raise the resources and funds that are necessary to help these families.” Stillwell said both she and Larkin have embraced the philosophy of the Ashley Lauren Foundation, helping families impacted by cancer in any way possible. The Ashley Lauren Foundation is an independent New Jersey foundation, which works hands on with each family in need. The goal of the foundation is to ease the journey when pediatric cancer is diagnosed by providing direct financial and material assistance. “Sometimes there are private needs that are shared, and we may donate or reach out to our friends and talk to them about the needs of the foundation,” Stillwell said.
C
arol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin of Colts Neck are involved with several local charities, but Stillwell said it’s non-profits which rally around cancer patients that hit close to home. Her sister, Mary Ann Larkin, is recovering from stage 4-colon cancer. “We see first hand how cancer effects not just the patient but the families,” Stillwell said. The philanthropic pair is being honored at the Third Annual Butterfly Ball, to benefit the Ashley Lauren Foundation (ALF). The foundation provides “hope and help to children in New Jersey with cancer through financial, material, and emotional support,” according to its website. “It really is wonderful to see how their spirits are lifted. I think for one thing, their families don’t walk alone. They believe that someone is extending their hand.”

ALF was founded by Monica Vermeulen, whose daughter Ashley was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the age of 3. After losing one kidney and battling through chemotherapy, Ashley is now living free of cancer and plays an active role in the Ashley Lauren Foundation. The foundation annually holds a Christmas party for young patients, as well as a charity-driven Barn Tour in Colts Neck. But its largest event is the Butterfly Gala, which will be held on Feb. ruary 22 in Long Branch this year. “I would encourage everyone within our community to understand that no matter how small the gift, whatever that gift is has so much meaning,” Stillwell said. “I hope that we lead by example. There’s so much the people of The Ashley Lauren Foundation can benefit from.” Tickets for the formal gala at Ocean Place Resort and Spa are $200 per person, including dinner and dancing as well as live and silent auctions. I’m IMPORTANT
I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”
The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

Beacon of Hope
Brings Business & Community Together The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce became more than a local business organization after Hurricane Sandy. STORY KAITLYN ANNESS
Former Chamber President Cliff Moore organizes volunteers at the 2012 Beacon of Hope relief center, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy (Photo courtesy of Beacon of Hope).
F
or 54 years, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce has represented a large book of businesses in the Bayshore area, putting their seal on the doors of storefronts in ten towns. But after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, that seal became more than a logo. It became a way for chamber businesses to reach out and help the community like never before. Then Chamber President, Hazlet business owner Cliff Moore saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between business and community and called on his chamber contacts for help. “It was chamber business owners that were offering services, volunteering their time,” Moore said. “People give me most of the credit, but it wasn’t me, it was the volunteers.” Within 24 hours of what began as a simple idea, Moore, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce, the RAINE Foundation and St. Benedicts Church opened what the Red Cross called the largest relief center in the state. The backdrop was the empty Foodtown building, which was filled with 38 tractor-trailers worth of donations. From there, the Beacon of Hope was formed. “It all happened because of social media,” Moore said. “Trucks were com-

ing from across the country, with no landing point, and then they would hear about us.” In 22 days, the impromptu center fed 100,000 people with one million pounds of food and 82,000 volunteer hours. “It was because of our contacts that we were able to put it together so quickly,” Moore said. “It was a partnership, people rose to the occasion.” Terence Biggs, Chamber Executive Director, said Sandy shifted gears for the chamber, making it a community organization rather than just a resource for businesses. “The next challenge we get, a lot of people will remember that and call us,” Biggs said. “The whole incident created a new role for us to serve.” Now, the chamber is becoming a bridge between what the community needs and what businesses need, because the two-function hand-in-hand. The chamber offers education, networking and marketing tools to its members. Social media is playing a bigger part in the chamber’s role, according to Biggs, who said most of the Bayshore businesses are owner-operated and run by second and third family generations. “The smaller

businesses have gotten so comfortable with the tools they already use,” Biggs said. “Some of the tools just aren’t effective anymore.” Through weekly networking breakfasts and partnering with area chambers, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce offers members a chance to learn from others and become the face associated with the name of their businesses. “We want to give members the opportunity to meet people from other chambers, that’s a benefit,” Chamber President Sebastian Ferrantell said. “We’re a business organization that is here to try to promote businesses in the footprint.” To continue its bridge between community and business, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce is in the process of creating its own 501(c)(3) organization to make it easier to donate to local charities and directly to people in need. “We need to prove value. Our members are involved in the community, getting exposure and learning different skillsets,” Ferrantell said. “We’re the standard.”
NJ Lightning : Jersey’s Own Blind Baseball League STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
BrightStar Care® is committed to Making More Possible for you and your family.
Baseball is one of the most popular sports, enjoyed by many. The athletes have great eyes when it comes to hitting the ball, but some do not need to see the ball to hit it; they need to hear it. That is the concept of Beep Baseball, a baseball league devoted to athletes who are visually impaired or blind. It works by the ball, which is slightly heavier than a softball, making a beep noise letting the batter know the ball is coming. When the ball is hit, people, called spotters, shout to the outfielders where the ball is going. Meanwhile the batter will run to one of two tall bases making different beeping noises, after the ball is hit. If the ball is not caught or found by the defense, before the player hits, or slides, into the base one hundred feet from the home base it is considered a home run. The only people on the field that can see are the pitchers, catchers, umpires and spotters. Their job is to let the athletes know what is happening around them. The spotters will shout out what zone the ball is going towards, letting the defense players in that zone, it is coming towards them. There are four strikes in this league. Bob Ciecierski is the head coach/manager for the New Jersey Lightning, New Jersey’s own Beep Baseball team, associated with the Association of Blind Athletes of New Jersey. He helps the athletes work on their game and arranges transportation.

Every Wednesday is Senior Appreciation Day.
NJ Lightning’s first time in the World Series had the athletes playing eleven games. They have yet to win the World Series, but Ciecierski says they have come close.
Seniors 55 and older get 50% off their Entree when they purchase a drink.
The main need for the team is sited volunteers, for a practice of at a tournament. They do not have to be there all the time, but their help will be greatly appreciated.

“These guys have a lot of fun” says Ciecierski. “It’s like a brotherhood that comes together, but when it’s game time they put their game face on and it’s all business.” Ciecierski encourages those wishing to volunteer to come out to the teams practice and see what the league is capable of. For more information about the team and beep baseball, visit the teams Facebook page - NJ Lightning Beep Baseball. To volunteer, contact Doug Winthrop at 732.267.2751. As the Recreation Director, I coordinate the race with our outstanding committee of volunteers,” said Deirdre Ring, Matawan Recreation Director. “These volunteers are made up of Boy Scouts, Church Groups, CERT members and individuals, etc. Without whom this event would not be possible.” Brian Quilty of Brick took first place in the race, with a time of just over 15 minutes, beating second place runner
Matthew Grogan of Brooklyn by almost two minutes. The first Matawan resident to cross the finish line was Richard Caponigro, with a 19:26 time. “This event has grown bigger and bigger over the years. We bring runners from all over the country through the historic streets of Matawan for a competitive event with community spirit.,” Ring said. The first woman to cross the line finished 13th overall. Rachel Kenny, 13, of Long Branch kept just under a 7-minute pace with a final time of 20:48. “We are able to raise funds for park beautification projects and recreation events as well as collect food for the Matawan Food Pantry. We look forward to growing this event in Matawan for years to come.”

entral New Jersey may have seen a few inches of snow so far, but if you’re looking to ski, board or tube for the day or even over an extended weekend, there are options aplenty to fulfill all your winter wonderland activity needs, whether you’re going with family, friends, as a couple or solo.
GETTING AWAY FOR THE DAY If you’re interested in playing in the snow for a few hours without the added cost of springing for lodging, ski resorts located in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania get you on the slopes fast: in about two hours! Mountain Creek, conveniently located in Vernon, New Jersey, hosts four peaks, night skiing and the highest peak in the region at 1,040 feet. Having merged with Crystal Springs Resort in 2010, the combined resorts offer snowboarding and tubing in addition to skiing, golf courses, spas, fine dining, a wine cellar, mountain biking and hiking. Check out winter.mountaincreek.com for mountain reports, trail maps and more. The Poconos, of course, with well-known resorts such as Camelback, Big Boulder, Blue Mountain and Jack Frost, are located in nearby Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and are packed with resorts able to fulfill all your skiing, snowboarding and tubing needs, and satisfy even the non-skier: The area’s resorts boast a casino, a racetrack, fishing, spas and outdoor adventures. Pick the ski spot that suits you best by browsing the resorts at 800poconos.com.
MAKING AN OVERNIGHT ESCAPE When a day of fun just won’t do? Venture a little farther to Upstate New York and spend a night (or two) at Hunter Mountain, Thunder Ridge or Windham Mountain, nestled in Hunter, Patterson or Windham, respectively. Each resort offers a variety of activities and amenities, including skiing, snowboarding and tubing, lodging, dining and shops, and other outdoor adventures and events. Visit each resorts’ website for conditions, lodging and more information: Hunter Mountain at huntermtn.com; Thunder Ridge at thunderridgeski.com/ and Windham Mountain at windhammountain.com.

Keyport’s Christmas
Tree Lighting The Borough of Keyport held its Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on November 30, 2013 on West Front Street in downtown Keyport. Entertainment from local school groups and area businesses kicked off the festivities, while a disc jockey provided holiday music. The tree lit up as Santa arrived in the parade of fire trucks, visiting with children and capturing holiday magic. The Keyport Garden Club decorated the town for the holiday season, giving the historic town a festive look for strolling and shopping. Hot chocolate and cider were provided by the Keyport First Aid Squad and Keyport Recreation, and gifts for the children were provided by the Keyport Safety Patrol. For more Keyport happenings, visit them on Facebook or at www.visitkeyport.org.

n December 4, 2013, local business owner Jessica Chaney of Blue River Market held a Holiday Nibbles, Nog and Shopping at her store on West Front Street in Keyport. Over 50 people came out to support the local shop and the Keyport Garden Club, where 10 percent of the night’s sales were donated to the Keyport Garden Club (KGC). Shoppers enjoyed wine, cheese and of course, egg nog (courtesy of KGC and Blue River Market). The KGC had a table set up with information about the Club and Keyport GardenWalk. The door prize was a beautiful seasonal centerpiece made by incoming KGC President Ann Boyce. It was a wonderful event that promoted a local business and benefited the Keyport Garden Club.

O
n December 6, 2013, the RAINE (Reaching All In Need Everyday) Foundation held their 12th Annual RAINE Foundation Cocktail Party & Gift Auction. They celebrated a twelfth successful year with supporters and members at the annual cocktail party and gift auction at the Jacques Banquet Hall in Middletown. Board member and the event’s chair Irene Baldassano thanked Karen Bachmann and her team for collecting the 200 prizes given away at the gift auction. The prizes ranged from $100 to over $1000 dollars. “The Foundation has expanded throughout the state and we hope to go even further.” said Baldassano. The money raised from the event will help RAINE carry out their mission: helping children and families in crises. RAINE started 12 years ago with founders Pattie and Matt Dickens helping one family, and it has grown to provide assistance to thousands of children in need, especially during the holidays.

n December 15, 2013, Parents of Special People (POSP) had their second annual Sensitive Santa Party at the Cliffwood VFW Post 4745. It was a chance for parents of children with special needs to meet Santa and tell him what they would like for Christmas, without the noisy mall crowd. There were activities to keep the children occupied while waiting for Santa, as many of the children are unable to focus on one thing for too long of a time. Games included arts & crafts, bowling, Simon Says and tic tac toe. After Santa arrived, each child had the chance to sit on his lap and received a coloring and activity book, stocking and candy cane as gifts. Lisa Hastry, president of POSP, said, “Parents of Special People, Inc.’s 2nd annual Sensitive Santa event was a huge success. Our goal was to provide a warm and supportive environment for special needs children and their families to visit with Santa Claus. This annual tradition can be a daunting challenge for our families and allowing them to participate on their own terms without being rushed or judged is invaluable. By ending this year with a fun, heartwarming event that captured the true spirit of the holiday season was special. It definitely motivates our group to continue our fundraising efforts, as we are able to provide sensory-friendly movies, pancake breakfasts, a bowling league, and other community based activities. Getting our children to become active, participating members of our community is vital.” For more information on POSP, check out their website at www.parentsofspecialpeopleinc.com

Aberdeen Gives Residents a
No-Knock Option Aberdeen Township residents can now keep solicitors off their doorsteps thanks to the creation of the “No Knock List.” The list, similar to a “Do Not Call” list, was created thanks to a revision of the township’s solicitor ordinance. Residents can sign up and post a “no knock” sign on doors. The list will be registered with the township and police department for enforcement, and handed out to all registered solicitors, canvassers, peddlers, hawkers and vendors. According to a township news release, the revision makes it illegal for any licensed solicitor to approach a home on the list or seek personal contact with the occupants. This does not apply to non-profit, charitable, religious or political organizations. Registration on the “No Knock List” expires five calendar years following the end of the calendar year of registration, unless renewed by notifying the Township Clerk. A copy of the “No Knock” application is available on the Latest News section of the township website, www. aberdeennj.org.

n 2011, 82 percent of all structure fires in New Jersey were in residential homes. Of all fire fatalities that year, 79 percent occurred in homes, according to the NJ Division of Fire Safety. Fire Official Robert DeBold of the Aberdeen Fire Prevention Bureau, said a recent law requiring fire extinguishers in each home is surprisingly leading to some disasters. DeBold said the improper use of a fire extinguisher could make a fire grow, or simply do nothing at all to control it.

“We want to train people how to put the fire out,” DeBold said, adding the best place to point the extinguisher is at the base of the fire in a sweeping motion. Aberdeen’s two fire districts, with the help of the Aberdeen Economic Business Council, purchased a Bullseye Laser-Driven Fire Extinguishers which combines virtual reality and physical training for anyone. The system is portable, and the Fire Prevention Bureau plans to educate schools, businesses and residents proper extinguisher technique. “Last month during a seminar at my school, our staff had the opportunity to learn about the new system and utilize it,” said Carmine Visone, CEO of the Home Away from Home Academy and EBC Chairman. “I can definitely attest it is the best virtual, hands-on system for fire safety training.”

While the first act during a fire should always be dialing 9-1-1, DeBold said smaller fires can be put out by civilians when done the right way. Residents should also keep in mind that most regular-sized extinguishers only last about 30 seconds. At a demonstration in Fire District #1, township officials and business owners were able to use the training equipment to learn where to aim the extinguisher, what makes fire jump and how far away to stand. “Because of the efforts of the Aberdeen EBC and other donors, residents, students and those whose business brings them to Aberdeen will be safer should a fire strike,” Mayor Fred Tagliarini said. The program, which the department has been fundraising to buy for several years, cost $10,600. Half of that was paid for by the EBC. DeBold said training will be available in both fire districts. Residents can call 732.566.3704 in the Strathmore, Frenau and Oakshades sections or 732.566.9448 in Cliffwood and Cliffwood Beach. Visone said, “It is as realistic as one can imagine and will provide any individual with the knowledge and real life experience of using a fire extinguisher.”

First Annual
Benefit for Bella Local Charity to Present Fundraiser for Colts Neck Girl Colts Neck resident, Bella McGovern, suffers from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare, multi- system genetic disorder.
STORY VICKY VALET
C
harming, playful and with a sense of humor to boot, Colts Neck resident Bella McGovern had just begun her life’s journey when, at 2-years-old, elements of her behavior began to change. Occasional body twitches gradually became the norm, as did her eyelids quickly fluttering and her head suddenly dropping limply to her chest. Recognizing this as atypical for her young daughter, Bethany Link rushed her to the family’s pediatrician, who, despite believing Bella to be healthy, recommended an EEG for the sake of assurance. The results that followed shocked everyone.
Unbeknownst to all those who knew her, Bella had been experiencing constant seizures and seizure activity, and was diagnosed with epilepsy. This diagnosis, however, would soon be proved inconclusive. Following what should have been a routine MRI, a local neurologist discovered numerous tumors on her brain. “We were brought into a [hospital] room with a priest. I will never forget that day as long as I live,” said her mother. “They had seen the tumors on her brain…we both dropped to our knees.” After several visits to the NYU Langone Medical Center for appointments with Dr. Orrin Devinsky, the director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, as well as numerous CAT scans, EEGs, EKGs, MRIs and spinal taps, a definitive diagnosis was finally reached: Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare, multi-system genetic disorder which, in the case of Bella, had caused tumor growth on her brain and heart, white patches to appear on her skin and developmental delays. Although Bella’s family was relieved to finally possess the answers to the questions they had been asking for 6 months, the devastating reality of TSC set in quickly. “It was hard for the doctors to give us any type of prognosis because the disease varies so much depending on the patient. We were basically told that as long as they could control the seizures, her chances of a normal life were better,” said Link. Numerous medications later, however, doctors were still unable to control Bella’s seizures. Even a last-resort traumatic brain surgery failed to yield a decrease in seizure activity, and instead

resulted in severe brain damages. “TSC has ruined our lives,” said Link. “This is a horrible, debilitating disease that has robbed my poor baby of her childhood.” Now 10-years-old, Bella cannot read or write, and is only capable of communicating in short phrases. Her personality is negatively affected by her medications, which cause her to experience lethargy one day and hyperactivity the next. Her limited attention span has prevented her from learning at the pace of her peers, as does her lack of ability to retain information for more than a few hours. Even more devastating, though, is the frequency of her seizures, which now occur daily. Due to the vast number of injuries she’s sustained from falling during her seizures, Bella must constantly be accompanied and wears a helmet to protect her face and head. Nightly seizures prevent her from having her own room, as she must sleep alongside her mother, who administers medication throughout the night and ensures she does not suffocate. Despite all of the darkness TSC has brought upon Bella, her mother and her two siblings, Tate and Willow, there is a bright light—the Harbor School in Eatontown, a NJ Department of Education-approved institution that provides individualized, alternative academic programs for students with disabilities. “All I ever wanted for her was to have friends…to learn how to dress herself, how to wash her hands,” said Link of her daughter. “We fought so hard to get her into a special school…She may never read or write or know math, but if she is happy and has friends, then that is the best education I could ever ask for or want for her.” With each passing day, however, Bella’s health continues to deteriorate, placing a hefty financial burden on her family. Link— who serves as her daughter’s full-time caregiver and, therefore, is unable to work—is struggling to pay off medical bills, failed medications, surgeries and a recent divorce. Looming in the air is the foreclosure of the family’s home, which will have grave consequences for Bella. “If the children and I are forced to leave Colts Neck, Bella will be taken out of her special school, the Har-

bor School, the one we fought so hard to get her in, because Colts Neck is the sending district,” said Link. Hardships have weighed heavily upon the shoulders of this family for years, leaving them without much hope for a brighter future. For others, however, their story has served as a source of inspiration, motivation to lend a helping hand. After learning about Bella’s critical condition in September 2013, Colts Neck residents Patricia Ronca and Virginia Marshall came together to establish Colts Neck Cares, an organization dedicated to helping those in need through gestures as grand as fundraisers and public-awareness campaigns, and offerings as simple as home-cooked meals. McGovern will be the first community member to receive assistance from Colts Neck Cares. “Bella is a beautiful, innocent child… She is no different than a healthy child in countless ways,” said Ronca. “Her illness should not define her.” With the assistance of Colts Neck Cares committee members Abbey Feiler-Kober, Stephanie Cudney, Debra Brey and Kim Clemente, as well as the sponsorship of numerous local businesses, Ronca and Marshall have organized the First Annual Benefit for Bella, which is scheduled for Friday, January 17, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Colts Neck Inn. The event, which will feature a silent auction—including music and sports memorabilia, Broadway tickets and jewelry—live music and delicious food, will benefit Bella, with 100 percent of the proceeds being allocated towards the Bella McGovern Trust. It is Link and Ronca’s hope that, following the First Annual Benefit for Bella, Link will have the means to purchase medical equipment and daily necessities for her daughter, as well as finding a new home, locally. “These funds and donations may not cure her disease, but may very well improve her quality of life as we pray for her well-being,” said Ronca. “Children are a miracle, and Bella McGovern deserves the same chance at happiness that we all wish for our own.”

Keyport Central School’s
D
Holiday Festival
STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
ecember 13, 2013 was a special night for many children in Keyport - they attended Keyport Central School’s 3rd annual holiday festival. The festival was sponsored by Keyport Central School PTO. It is a night for the children and parents to enjoy holiday festivities of all sorts. Local small businesses around Keyport were there to help out the families celebrate. Businesses such as Teddy’s Jams & Jellies, Blue River Market, Sweetest Moments, Origami Owl and Hook Line Stinkers showed off their material to the parents. The Keyport Library had an arts & crafts station, and they gave away holiday cook books. The Keyport Garden Club joined in, making birdfeeders for our feathered friends. The festival had a Hanukkah station where the children could make dreidels out of marshmallows, pretzel rods and Hersey Kisses. Stations were arts and crafts, face painter and dreidel making, but the biggest surprise was yet to come. After meals were provided by businesses such as Keyport IHOP, Keyport Stop‘N Shop & Jersey Shore, the children got a nice surprise in the form of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Each child had the chance to sit on Santa’s lap for a picture. After which, they received a bag containing mini gifts. There was also a princess from My Fairy Tale Dream. “It’s nice how we get the town involved with this event.” said Annie McPeek, one of the festival’s chairs. “It’s a nice family night, small town feel.”
The Hazlet Alliance Supports Peer Leadership In December 2013, The Hazlet Alliance provided transportation for student representatives from Teen Institute, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use), Heroes and Cool Kids and TEAM (Teen Educators and Mediators) to attain the “First Annual Teen Conference” held at CentraState Student Health Awareness Center in Howell. Students attended various workshops on alcohol and drug abuse, suicide prevention, leadership, character building and stress management. These student representatives shared the information learned at the conference with their group members

and developed programs, activities and projects to make a positive change in their school. These groups also developed cross age teaching programs that they bring to the middle school and elementary schools. The Hazlet Alliance would like to thank all the RHS students who have participated in our sponsored peer leadership programs over the years. Each year more than 150 students are involved in these programs. DEARBORN MARKET OFFERS
FAMILY FUN AT HOLIDAY FESTIVAL STORY SUSAN MURPHY
D
earborn Market celebrated the holidays in a big way during their Holiday Festival on December 7 and 8. The Luccarelli family, owners of Dearborn Market, is both community and family-oriented, so this two-day event combined family fun as well as an opportunity to give back to those in the community who are in need. The event hosted a children’s Coat Drive for BRIDGES Outreach, which benefited the children in Monmouth and Ocean Counties whose families were affected by Super Storm Sandy, many of which are still displaced from their homes.

Also throughout the holidays, donations given at Dearborn Market checkouts were sent to Lunch Break in Red Bank to help support the nonprofit organization that provides food, clothing and fellowship to community members in need. President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli said, “These two days were great! Santa Claus has a way of bringing out the best in everyone!” Family fun during the Holiday Festival meant, of course, a visit with Santa. Children eagerly waited for their turn to tell Santa their Christmas wishes.

Once they reached Mr. Claus, parents were able to take their own photos of the memorable event. Well over 100 little ones were able to share a magical moment with the jolly man in red. Tucked in a corner of the greenhouse was an artist who painted the children’s hands with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or a Gingerbread Boy or Girl. Throughout the day, a DJ played holiday songs that had most everyone singing or swaying to the music. Once outdoors, guests visited the Living Nativity featuring some very special animals.
