5K TURKEY TROT & FITNESS WALK

On November 29, 2014, the Matawan Recreation Commission hosted its annual Turkey Trot 5k race to benefit Matawan Parks & Recreation events. This year, in spite of chilly temperatures, over 400 runners came out to participate in this fun and festive event. The festivities kicked off at Terhune Park on Main Street, where runners were checked in and received their race bibs and shirts. Bagels and fresh fruit were on hand to keep the runners fueled up and plenty of hot drinks were served, courtesy of Starbucks in Matawan. DJ services by Steve Cie Entertainment were provided for added entertainment. The race started at 10:00 a.m., at which point the runners tackled Matawan’s official certified course.

Festivities were wrapped up at the park with an awards ceremony. Overall race winners were: Sean Donohue of Cliffwood Beach (first place), Will Alston of Matawan (second place) and Joseph Bitto of Hazlet (third place). The Matawan Recreation Commission wanted to thank the following volunteers who were key to this successful event - the Matawan Police Dept., Matawan OEM, Matawan First Aid, and the Matawan-Aberdeen Cert Team who ensure the safety and security of the participants, and the Matawan Department of Public Works for their hard work leading up to and on race day. To all of their Sponsors who partner with them to bring this great event to Matawan, they appreciate your generosity and support.

Hazlet Held Annual

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

Although there was dreary weather in the forecast, it did not stop Hazlet’s residents from spreading warm wishes of holiday cheer. On December 6, 2014, sponsored by the Hazlet Recreation Council, the Hazlet Recreation Department organized its annual winter festivity, Breakfast with Santa, which was filled with holiday fun for the entire family. Volunteers of all ages donated their time to make the make the event unforgettable. At the door, young ones were greeted by the North Pole’s most famous reindeer, Rudolph. People could enjoy fresh baked bagels or a slice of homemade cake along with a cup of

hot chocolate - all donated by local businesses in Hazlet which included Shoprite, Pathmark, Gems Bagels, All Time Bagels, Brooklyn Bagels and Dunkin Donuts. Attendees could also sing-a-long to their favorite classical winter songs. Kathy Viscardi, Hazlet Director of Recreation, commented on the event saying that, “We feel we have a great community and we wanted to give back to them.” To top it off, families were able to make lasting memories by taking pictures on Santa’s lap while children received candy canes and a small gift from the big guy!

GOING THE EXTRA MILE WHEN IT MATTERS MOST Meridian Cancer Care Nurse Navigator Goes Above and Beyond for Her Patient A cancer diagnosis is a life changing moment for both the patient and their family. Through Meridian Cancer Care’s free Patient Navigation Service, patients and families have access to an invaluable resource in their nurse navigator, who can help answer questions about tests and diagnostics, coordinate treatment and follow-up care, assist with making appointments, and provide information on everything from support groups to medical insurance. When Jill Generelli, RN started as a nurse navigator at Bayshore Community Hospital in the fall of 2014 she was fully prepared to support and guide her patients through their cancer diagnosis. However, even she didn’t know how much of a positive impact she would be to her patients in the coming months. Jill’s first patient was a Howell man by the name of Paul Allen suffering from stage four colon cancer. Due to complications with his insurance, Paul was unable to receive medication to help his nausea and stomach pain. By working with the pharmaceutical supplier, Jill was able to connect him to the help he needed. After Paul started chemotherapy, he had many questions for Jill about his care, all of which she was there to answer. But Jill’s commitment extended far beyond Paul’s clinical care when she learned Paul needed a new home. “Our apartment at the time had a serious mold and

mildew problem,” says Paul. “That environment was not helping me recover. We needed to move.” Jill knew first hand just how difficult this time had been for Paul and his loved ones; she was determined to find a way to help. Jill met with Paul and helped him through the process of applying for disability. However, Paul would need extra help if he was going to find a suitable place to live. According to Jill “I reached out to David’s Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation of Manahawkin and the RAINE foundation in Hazlet, two local organizations started by cancer survivors.” Both David’s Dream and RAINE understood Paul’s situation, and generously supplied enough money for his security deposit and first month’s rent. “I am so thankful we had Jill to help us through this time,” says Paul. “She was an absolute blessing.” Thanks to Jill’s dedication, Paul was able to receive the medical help he needed, as well as a livable home for the holidays. Additionally, with the help of Dr. Chen and Meridian Cancer Care, Paul has seen incredible progress with his cancer treatment. Holiday Tree Lighting

The Township of Aberdeen presented their annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Thursday, December 4, 2014. There were delicious holiday treats for attendees, along with hot chocolate, carols and of course a meet and greet with Santa Claus!

The Gress House, located at 14 Johnson Avenue in Union Beach, is decorated from street to rooftop during the holiday season for donations that are given to The Children’s Miracle Network.

Union Beach residents Elissa Gonzalez, her son Antonio, and Lindy Malinowski stopped by the Gress House to take in the holiday cheer and donate to a good cause.

The Gress Family of Union Beach has once again held their annual “Decorations for Donations” event during the holiday season to benefit The Children’s Miracle Network. It was a sight to see, with 78,000 lights and over 200 holiday figures on the lawn, you could see the house from blocks away! On December 19, 2014, visitors had a special treat as Santa Claus, Mrs. Clause, Ninja Turtles and so many more friends of the North Pole greeted everyone, and all these characters generously gave their time from My Fairytale Dream, which holds princess parties and character visits. On any given night during the holiday sesason, over 100 people stroll down Johnson Avenue in Union Beach to see this Christmas light extravaganza. Brandon Gress said, “This year, we started October 1st, we skipped Halloween which was a little bit of shame but we had bigger and better things to do!” Their goal was to bring in over $2,000 for The Children’s Miracle Network, and by press time, they reached their goal.

KEYPORT MINISTERIUM Food Pantry Ribbon Cutting on January 24

th

The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry (KMFP) announce their ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held on January 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. for the new KMFP Community Center, located at 42 Elizabeth Street in the historic borough of Keyport. This project represents a unique public/private partnership and a culmination of ten years of planning to create a new, larger facility which will serve as an anchor for social services, education programs, and food distribution to over 200 families per month from more than 20 towns in the Monmouth County Bayshore area. The pantry has currently been working at St. Mary’s the Virgin Episcopal Church for many years at a location inadequate to serve its current clients. Recognizing the need to improve upon the inadequate space at its current location, the pantry will now be able to address clients with increased confidentiality through private office space, expand its refrigeration and freezer capabilities and add public restrooms and a space for donated clothing. It will also allow the pantry to enlarge its volunteer base. The new 2,403 square foot Community Center will house numerous programs sponsored by the Ministerium. The KMFP will manage the Community Center through generous donations and support from nine local churches that have already collected over $208,000 toward construction costs in private funds since the project began in 2005. In 2011, the County approved a Community Development Block Grant for $134,375 in matching funds to be used towards the construction. The Community Church has provided the land for the Center for $1 per year lease to the KMFP. Engineering, architects and legal services were provided pro bono. Many volunteers were on hand to assist with construction of the facility. In the spirit of the KMFP tradition, donation boxes will be on hand to accept non-perishables and canned goods during the event. Refreshments will be served following the opening at the Community Church Fellowship Hall.

For the third year in a row, the Keyport Garden Club (KGC) was invited by the Drumthwacket Foundation to help decorate the parlor of the governor’s mansion in Princeton. The theme this year was Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Under the direction and inspiration of Chairperson Diane Calabrese, the KGC used many natural resources from their own gardens and were able to evoke a feeling of magic and enchantment. Drumthwacket, built in 1835, has served as the official residence for New Jersey’s governor since 1981. The mansion in all its holiday splendor was open to the public for viewing.

Holy Crepe!

A Taste of Parisian Crepes Right Around the Corner If you haven’t experienced Whipped Creperie & Dessert Bar in Red Bank, you’re missing a very special treat. Whipped Owners: Erica Lieberman & Nicholas Napoletano Whether you’re looking for a light meal or a special dessert, or maybe thinking of exciting and different ideas for a party, you need to try some of their 30 tempting crepes and their mini cupcakes prepared from special recipes. Now a little over a year old in its location at 6 Monmouth Street in Red Bank, this little gem has been serving both savory crepes for breakfast, lunch or dinner and sweet crepes for desserts. In addition to the tempting choices of crepes and cupcakes, this Frenchstyle café also serves a selection of decadent Belgian Waffles and hot and cold beverages that include flavorful Espresso drinks and HandPressed coffees. Your hosts, Erica Lieberman and Nick Napoletano will greet you warmly and get to know you and your taste preferences You’ll recognize the place by its distinctive pink, brown and white striped decor and the warm, welcoming atmosphere that urges you to come in, sit down and enjoy whatever taste sensation you are looking for. This is a “something for everyone” experience. A gluten-free option provides crepes made from Buckwheat, which, despite its name, is a naturally gluten-free product. Erica and Nick make no promises, however, about 16

low calories. They simply offer astonishingly flavorful, mouth-watering and often decadent treats. Experience the delectable flavors that you might want to enhance with your favorite BYOB wines. Maybe the French crepe, a wonderful combination of ham, brie cheese and raspberry jam, or the Chicken Pesto crepe, with mozzarella cheese and roasted peppers. Or, for the more diet conscious, maybe the Veggie crepe, a combination of goat cheese, spinach, mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes. All of the Savory crepes are served with a side salad topped with vinaigrette dressing. And, then just as you are remarking about how delicious these or other choices are, you have to try at least one Sweet Crepe and bring your taste buds up to an even higher level. If you’re feeling very French by this time, you can, of course, choose a traditional French Crepes Suzette, made from Grand Marnier, sugar and orange marmalade. Or you may want to try one of the house favorites that include the Classic, with fresh strawberries, bananas and Nutella (or, if you prefer, the new taste sensation, cookie butter). You might think about the S’mores Crepes, filled with marshmallow, chocolate chips and graham cracker crumbs or, maybe the aromatic Apple Pie crepe with caramel sauce and cinnamon. And there are plenty more to choose from. Now, think of all of these temptations and what a fantastic addition they could be to your next party. What’s coming up? Birthdays, engagements, weddings, baby showers, communions, bar and bat mitzvahs, sweet 16s, corporate parties? Food is the key to every successful, memorable party. Think of how this might work for you.

A whole lot easier—and cheaper—than packing your guests off to Paris. Just talk to Erica and Nick and they’ll show up with everything you need. Except, of course, the Eiffel Tower! AMERICAN LEGION RARITAN POST #23

Hosts 2nd Annual Breakfast with Santa for Children in Need

The American Legion is the largest Veterans organization providing support for Veterans and their families, but what you might not know is that they have other missions; one of them being involvement and giving back to their communities. In 2013, Post #23 (the oldest Post in Monmouth County) held their First Breakfast with Santa for children, who if not for the generous donations from the Post and Marines Toys for Tots, would not have had any presents to open on Christmas Day. Hosting this event took a lot of coordination and work, but the Post knew it was for a good cause and they rolled up their sleeves and rose to the challenge. They vowed to do it again in 2014 and they did!

the Shelter Program that could not attend. As everyone eagerly waited for Santa’s arrival (Jim Burke – Post Member) and his Elves (Diane Javins, Gina Santella, Carolyn Poplaski, Mary Scheider and Beverly Baxter – wives of Post Members) a great pancake breakfast, cooked by Post members John Dorsi (PPC), Tim Rapp and George Ferment, was served to the children. Finally, the moment that everyone had been waiting for – Santa’s arrival. At the end of the event, the children in attendance presented a poster to Raritan Post #23 Commander Ed Poplaski and Post Members with their names written on the back, thanking the Post for a great time and wishing all of them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

On December 20, 2014, Post #23 provided 80 children, including children in the Shelter Program, with wrapped toys. The gift wrapping was all done by the spouses of Post members, Boy Scout Troop #364, along with their Troop Leader MaryAnn DeVarti and volunteers from the Keyport Food Pantry.

Yes, it was a lot of work but everyone involved with this event agreed that their hard work paid off by seeing the children’s smiling faces, knowing that they were able to give back to the community and making Christmas a little brighter for these children and their families. The Post hopes to do it again next year. Please visit the Post website at www.ALPost23.org for information and future events.

Prior to the start of the event, Post members delivered breakfast and toys to the children in

HAZLET BUSINESS OWNERS ASSOCIATION Holds 4th Annual Holiday Window Decorating Contest On November 20, art students from Raritan High School decorated the windows at the Airport Shopping Plaza with festive holiday displays. This is the 4th year that the Hazlet Business Owners Association (HBOA) hosted the Annual Holiday Window Decorating Contest; a contest with proceeds benefitting the Hazlet Business Owners Association’s Scholarship Program. This year’s winning window display was created by Julia Barnes and Jenna McCann as they designed a display that supported our Troops.

More than 20 art students from Raritan High School participated in the window painting and were treated to pizza and soda, compliments of Angela’s Pizza; donuts and bagels, compliments of Immediate Care; and hot chocolate and muffins, compliments of Perkins. RAINE FoundationSantas Deliver Gifts to 450 Bayshore Families It is difficult for families to afford children’s Christmas gifts when they are struggling with unemployment, medical issues, or the lingering damage by Superstorm Sandy. But for 450 needy families in the Bayshore, this year’s Christmas was a little bit better, thanks to the RAINE Foundation and a legion of anonymous toy drive donors. “The need does not go away, it just gets bigger. But so does our volunteer base, and our commitment to make the holidays better for all of our local kids,” said RAINE Foundation co-founder Patti Dickens. Working out of the Holy Family School gym in December, RAINE volunteers organized gifts donated by individuals who “adopted” a child’s wish, or from toy drives at our local schools, municipal buildings and businesses.

The wishes and gifts were matched up and then wrapped in holiday paper for special delivery by Santa on December 18. Much of the work, including bike assembly, was done by the organization’s youth, called “Drops of RAINE.” Accompanied by local fire police and fire departments, Santa made rounds in Hazlet, Keansburg, Keyport, Union Beach, Matawan, Aberdeen, Morganville, Middletown, Holmdel and Colts Neck throughout the night. “Thank you, RAINE Foundation, for giving my little girl a Christmas!” wrote one Mom on the organization’s Facebook Page. “Without you guys, she wouldn’t of had one.” The RAINE Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Read more about us on facebook.com/ RaineFoundation or at RAINEFoundation.com.

Lisa Frank is the founding member of the Young Survival Coalition; the premier non-profit focused solely on the unique issues facing young women diagnosed with breast cancer and those in their lives. She spoke about Turning Challenges into Opportunities. Past presenters from 2014 were: Mariel Miller, Business Advisor at Executive Franchise Specialists; Roe Couture-DeSaro, The Gutsy Gal; and Robyn Stratton-Berkessel, Positivity Strategist Coach. This popular event for women, men and young adults, spotlights women in business. At the conclusion of our Spotlight Presentations, the floor is opened to our members and guests to ask questions of the presenters.

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT

ADDS LICENSE PL ATE READERS

With homeland security and regional task force grants funding approximately 71% of the cost, Aberdeen Township has increased the technological reach of law enforcement through the installation of automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs). Installed this month, ALPRs utilize specialized cameras and software that recognize, capture and record images of license plates. The technology is deployed in and around critical infrastructure and other key locations. “This is cutting-edge technology,” said Aberdeen Township Chief of Police John T. Powers. “The information we gather is uploaded onto the county database—the Sheriff’s office has an in-house ALPR server—and is then available county-wide for investigators who might be looking for a particular vehicle. It also allows us to manage amber and silver alerts.” Through the program, the department participates in an ALPR Working Group comprised of state, regional, county and local law enforcement and technology representatives. Consisting of three, trunk-mounted camera units and associated hardware and software, the department’s ALPR

installation checks vehicle license plates against FBI, New Jersey Motor Vehicles and local hotlists for suspended and wanted drivers, stolen plates or vehicles, and expired plates. Combined, the three units are capable of scanning up to 3,600 plates per hour. Grants covered $18,900 of the system’s total cost of $26,600, which includes additional warranty years. “We had budgeted for it and had every intention of moving forward to purchase it,” Powers noted. “However, we became aware that there might be grant funding under homeland security for municipalities with some critical infrastructure, and we submitted the portions of the Aberdeen/Matawan Train Station that are situated in Aberdeen.” Both platforms and approximately half of the station’s parking area are located in Aberdeen, and qualified as critical infrastructure, earning a $13,900 county homeland security grant toward the system’s purchase. Aberdeen’s installation also qualified for a $5,000 reimbursement from the Bayshore Task Force.

Local School Provides

“Hope for Children” Children helping children is an invaluable lesson that is taught at Home Away From Home Academy in Aberdeen. Each year, the school participates in a Toy Drive to benefit a local organization. For the second year in a row, their efforts were geared toward the “Hope for Children Foundation” based in Middletown. Owner of the Academy Phyllis Visone says, “Having a child go out to purchase a toy for another child in need is one of the best ways to embrace the holiday season, in our eyes.” This year, the school also participated in a monetary collection for Timmy McDonnell, a Holmdel resident and alumni of Home Away From Home Academy. On October 4, a car struck Timmy, 20, while he crossed Easton Avenue in New Brunswick. Timmy was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was placed in a medically induced coma with severe brain damage. After 25 days at Robert Wood Johnson, Timmy was transferred to the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute. Timmy has survived, but is now facing an extensive & costly rehabilitation. “Fight for Timmy” fundraisers have been held throughout Holmdel for him, and the school was honored to help this family with assistance from the Hope for Children Foundation. In past toy drives, the school was recognized for its plentiful

24

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

collection of items, collecting over 600 toys each year. Carmine S. Visone, co-owner, says “the most important thing here is teaching the children that it is just as important to give as it is to receive.” Some of the items they collected include: stuffed animals, coloring books, arts and crafts supplies, puzzles, and more. The Toy Drive lasted from November 24 through December 15 when the elves of “Hope for Children” picked up what they collected. The effort put forth by the Academy to help others is truly inspiring and their work will continue to assist a charity during the holiday season every year. Hope for Children Foundation began in 2002 with a group of young professionals, entrepreneurs and parents in Monmouth County working together to raise funds with the end result of making a significant positive difference in the lives of children. On an annual basis, Hope for Children Foundation identifies charitable organizations and individuals that will benefit from their fundraising efforts. Past beneficiaries have included K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Arc of Monmouth County, Prevention 1st, YMCA, Monmouth Medical Center and more.

PACK 66 OF ABERDEEN & MATAWAN Enjoy Special Guest Speaker

On November 25, 2014, Aberdeen Matawan Cub Scout Pack 66 held a special Pack Meeting. In 2012, then Assistant Cubmaster Mark Mills arranged for the Pack to participate in the Pocket Flag Project and sent folded pocket size flags to the Military Troops serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The boys folded flags not knowing who would ultimately receive them. Some of the scouts who folded the flags crossed over into various Troops in the District, and were on hand during this meeting. The flags that Pack 66 folded made their way to the crew of a Combat Sortie – specifically the USAF A-10C Warthog, which was assigned to the 74th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. In early November, Cubmaster Erica Matlick received an email explaining that the airmen who received Pack 66’s folded flags wanted to show their appreciation by presenting a plaque to Pack 66. Senior Airman Pedro “Pete” Rodriguez, who is currently stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas,

made a special journey to New Jersey to meet with the Pack 66 scouts. The scouts and their parents assembled in the Matawan Municipal Community Center. During the presentation, the scouts asked many questions, which Airman Rodriguez was happy to answer. He even discussed the practical jokes that he and his fellow scouts pulled on each other during their camping trips. This special guest is not only an active serviceman, but he is an Eagle Scout. He spoke about his journey to become an Eagle Scout, how it was worth all of the hard work and told the scouts to keep on scouting. Airman Rodriguez brought along his scout uniform shirt and sash with the merit badges that he had worked hard to earn. He spoke of his Eagle project and how he led fellow scouts and others to work towards stocking the community’s food pantry. At the end, Pack 66 scouts presented Airman Rodriguez with a certificate of donation made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his name.

A Special Marriage Proposal at Monmouth County Police Academy Graduation On December 11, 2014, Melissa Fleming of Hazlet thought she was just attending her boyfriend’s graduation of the 87th class of the Monmouth County Police Academy at the Neptune Performing Arts Center. Unbeknownst to her, she was about to have a very special marriage proposal from her boyfriend, now fiancé Chris DeGroat of Keyport in front of 58 recruits, family and friends. Chris DeGroat made a special thank you speech and at the end, he proposed. Melissa Fleming said, “It was a complete surprise to me, both our families and friends that were in attendance, the entire graduating class and police academy knew before me. It was just amazing!”

Congratulations Melissa Fleming and Chris DeGroat!
