W
e were warned about this winter being a rough one, but who would have thought we would see so much snow, record breaking temps, and on top of everything - a polar vortex. To imagine we may have a few more weeks of this makes me want to take an impromptu trip down south to warm my bones, but then again, spring is around the corner, and we only have to endure this for a little longer. February is definitely a more eventful month then January, all month we are celebrating Black History, as well as Presidents Day, oh, and of course that day for showing that special somebody how much they mean to you, a celebration of the heart – Valentine’s Day. February also happens to be American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, for both men and women, people of all ages and backgrounds can get the condition. If you don’t know me personally, this topic is close to my ‘heart’, as my father suffered from heart disease, but was a lucky man when he received a heart transplant a couple years back. I could probably tell you everything there is to know about the heart, being in and out of hospitals with my father for so long, I was able to learn and become more aware by chatting with the nurses and doctors on the cardiac floors – and believe me, there were many hospitals. But understanding heart conditions isn’t an easy task - there are lots of different types and knowing how the heart works is more helpful when trying to learn about these conditions. Looking at the facts, prevention, and finding ways to improve your heart health, will benefit yourself and the people you love in the long run. So please, love your heart and be aware,

Dear fellow business Hazlet business owners, 2013 was a year of many accomplishments. Our membership doubled in growth, as Hazlet business owners have recognized the value of being a member. Our goal is to help our members connect with other business owners to discuss how to improve our businesses and our community. We provide critical input and feedback, helping to create a strong voice for our members while developing strong relationships between the local government, the community and civic organizations. Our recent focus has been the business development along the two highway corridors that run through the Township. Both highways have seen an increase in vacant buildings and storefronts over the past few years. The HBOA recently formed a committee called the Hazlet Township Economic Development Committee; its mission is to enhance the many attributes that the Township of Hazlet has to offer. We invite you attend our monthly meetings that are the second Wednesday of every month at 7:15p.m. Meetings are held at the Scudiery Enterprises Conference Room – located above Interstate Electronics at Airport Plaza. These monthly meetings are informative for both business owners and residents. Please save the date and join us on Sunday, February 16, as the HBOA has a networking event that will include recent updates from the Economic Development Committee. This networking event will be held at the Shore Café, 1104 Route 36, Hazlet, from 5pm – 8pm. This event will also raise funds for our High School Scholarship Program, which has grown over this past year from $1,000 to $2,500. We hope to see you at the Shore Café on February 16. For more information on the HBOA, visit our website at hazletboa.org or on Facebook. Sincerely yours,
Ted Koczon, President
Hazlet Business Owners Association

Keyport Writer Makes Us Laugh with New Parenting Book
L
izz Dinnigan of Keyport has combined the humor of life with stories of raising her two boys, capturing the daily life of parenting into vignettes and short stories. Dinnigan is the author if I Have Sand in my Arm: Quotes and Short Stories from Raising Two Hilarious Boys, which was published in December 2013. A resident of Monmouth County for 11 years, Dinnigan shares everything from having rubber frogs thrown at her face while she sleeps to stories of her boys playing ‘chase’ with TSA agents in the airport. “One son wedged a pencil eraser deep inside his ear cavity on the first day of school. The other child begs for wontons and ravioli for breakfast,” the synopsis reads. Dinnigan’s book is available on Amazon, as a result of Dinnigan’s foresight to document every hilarious moment of parenting.
Lizz Dinnigan of Keyport has been keeping track of the humor in raising two boys ever since she became a parent. Now, she has a book to show for it.

Low Tide for Hazlet Flood Insurance Rates
H
azlet Township has been recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as one of 16 municipalities in New Jersey that took proactive steps and actions to reduce flood risks. The recognition resulted in a 20 percent decrease in insurance rates for residents. Flood plain management lowered Hazlet’s rank from a Class-8 community to a Class-6, by promoting positive flood resistive measures to citizens and business owners, according to a news release. A township release said insurance premium discounts
are based upon a community rating sacale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the highest in reductions. Only 17 other municipalities in New Jersey share Hazlet’s current rank, a rank that gives residents a full 20 percent discount eligibility. Residents can find out more about the CRS discounts by contacting their flood insurance provider and more information on flood control and prevention strategies can be found at the township web page by clicking on the “Prepare Yourself” icon.

t almost 100-years-old, Elena SanFilipo is still knitting, crocheting and crafting – and using her talents to spread joy to her family and friends. Better known as “Grandma,” SanFilipo’s latest project is buying baby dolls and crocheting clothes for them. The dolls are donated to children undergoing treatment in Monmouth County hospitals through the non-profit New Jersey organization Blankie Depot. “I feel so sorry for these sick children,” SanFilipo said. “Little girls love to dress and undress dolls, I used to love that as a little girl. So I said, while I have the time and I’m able to do it, let me start with one doll and we would see how many I could get done.” Linda Rossano, SanFilipo’s daughter, said her mother has been working on this project since Thanksgiving after shopping in Wal-Mart and realizing she could make outfits to put on the dolls. “My mother always said children should have a very happy childhood, because that stays with you the rest of your life,” SanFilipo said, adding that after World War II when children came from Europe as orphans, her mother always took care of any child in need. SanFilipo was the first woman lawyer to graduate from Brooklyn Law School, and now enjoys her time with family as she finds ways to give back locally. Recently, SanFilipo began knitting and crocheting hats for people in Hospice. “Grandma” is turning 100 on March 11, 2014, but continues to be both active and generous in Colts Neck and throughout Monmouth County. “Why shouldn’t every child have a happy childhood?” she said.

berdeen-Matawan Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) conducted a final training exercise as well as a graduation for its most recent class of 26 CERT volunteers on January 11 at the Keyport First Aid Building. Aberdeen-Matawan CERT Coordinator Herb Caravella said that training began in October of last year, with eight different blocks of instruction taught by Aberdeen Patrolman Roger Peter and Matawan Patrolman Brian Murphy. Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini said to the graduates, “We are so glad to have you, and hope we don’t need you, but it is nice knowing you are here.” CERT is designed to educate residents in local municipalities about disaster preparedness. On January 11, the final hands-on training exercise they completed was designed to test the class, which worked in teams, on the training they have received. The class was comprised of

10 residents from Aberdeen, eight from Matawan, four from Keyport, and four from Union Beach. Walter Kain, a CERT member since 2004, who is retired from his position as an emergency disaster responder, said that with his background, CERT was a perfect fit for him. “I love helping others and I believe it’s good to give back.” Caravella noted that this graduating class received instruction in disaster preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, terrorism, incident command system 100, fire safety, disaster psychology and first aid. Aberdeen CERT Captain Gregory Strobel, Matawan OEM CERT coordinator Lieutenant Thomas Falco, Keyport Police Chief George Casaletto and Keyport OEM CERT Coordinator James Lawson assisted in presenting to the graduates. Matawan Mayor Paul Buccellato said, “This was an intensive program. We hope there will not be another Hurricane Sandy, but it is great knowing you are here to help us if we need it.” Also in attendance were Keyport First Aid OEM Coordinator Chief Kenneth Krohe, Keyport Councilwoman JoyMichele Tomczak and

Keyport Councilman Kenneth McPeek. Caravella, who is in his 10th year, said, “We have excellent instructors to train the volunteers who attend our classes.” The graduation was followed by team assignments, where graduates were given crisis scenarios and several jobs to get through the situation smoothly. Graduate Sandra Gregory said, “This was very educational with excellent oneon-one instruction.” Caravella said that after the attacks on September 11, 2001, communities began increasing disaster preparedness awareness through federal grand money. Aberdeen graduated its firs CERT class in 2004, and now has a total of 74 members who assist local law enforcement for community events and are trained in case of emergency situations. The team logged 732 volunteer hours in 2013. Caravella noted that applications for the CERT training classes this fall are now being accepted. Meridian Fitness & Wellness
Making Fitness Family Friendly PROVIDED BY JULIANNE DODS, VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS
The Colletts of Holmdel - BILL and BARBARA Bill and Barbara Collett of Holmdel joined Meridian Fitness & Wellness five years ago. Bill, 72, never belonged to a fitness center until retirement and believes that he is now in the best shape of his life! Currently, Bill works out at Meridian Fitness & Wellness 5-6 days a week. During that time, he meets with Certified Personal Trainer Pat Harkenreader who specializes in Active Adult fitness. Bill and Pat meet once a week for a structured program specifically designed for his goals and fitness level. Bill also participates in a Small Group Training class for active adults lead by Certified Personal trainer Matt Wells. “Bill’s dedication and enthusiasm are unparalleled. Often times it is hard to believe he is 72-years old. He truly is an inspiration to the trainers and members here at Meridian Fitness & Wellness,” said Wells.
The Scafarias of Colts Neck - JILL, VINCE, and TIM Jill Scafaria, and her husband Vince have been members at Meridian Fitness & Wellness for just over two years now. Living in Colts Neck, it takes the Scafaria’s 25 minutes each way to drive to Meridian Fitness & Wellness in Hazlet, but for them, it’s worth it. While Vince trains on his own, Jill’s father encouraged her to begin a Personal Training program with his Small Group Instructor, Matt Wells. “There is nothing better than having a Personal Trainer,” says Jill. “Training on my own without the guidance and motivation of a fitness professional got boring, but now I cannot wait to go the gym.” Jill attributes her success to the fun and creative workouts that Matt develops. “He takes into consideration that I have a bad left shoulder. He is still able to develop workouts that strengthen and stretch it without causing injury which is something I would not have the knowledge to do on my own.”

I
t’s no secret, living well and proactively taking care of your body is important throughout all stages of life as the benefits of physical activity accumulate over a lifetime. However, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH), six out of ten American adults do not regularly engage in leisure-time physical activity despite the health benefits, and American teenagers spend roughly four hours a day watching television or surfing the web. But not the Collett/Scafaria family. According to Jill Scafaria, Meridian Fitness & Wellness has helped to make fitness family-friendly. “There are currently three generations of my family working out and training together at the Hazlet club,” says Jill. “I can’t imagine that happens very often!”

Tim is the oldest of the four Scafaria children. When Tim turned 16 this October, his grandfather, Bill Collett, bought him a Personal Training package with Matt. As an athlete, Tim’s goal was to increase his muscle mass while also learning the mechanics behind proper lifting techniques and form. Tim continues to train with Matt once a week and, since beginning his program, has seen amazing results. “Right now, I am focused on my winter track season and increasing my upper body strength for pole vaulting,” says Tim. “I was the last one in my family to start training with Matt,” says Jill, “but am so glad that I finally did. I have even started taking his Small Group classes like my father. And that is how Matt came to train three generations of the Collett family at Meridian Fitness & Wellness! In all honesty, we are just trying to keep up with my dad!” Meridian Fitness & Wellness Personal Training Director, Erin Walsh, says, “When families workout, either together or separately, it’s an ideal situation. They feed off of each other’s excitement and enthusiasm, motivate each other, and encourage one another to succeed as a family. At Meridian Fitness & Wellness, we are committed to creating a healthy and fun atmosphere the whole family can enjoy and succeed in.” For more information on how you and your family can take advantage of the amenities and services offered at Meridian Fitness & Wellness, visit www.MeridianFitnessandWellness.com or call 732.335.4200 today!

“This event is meant to serve a dual purpose. It is a fundraiser for the PBA; and as a community event, it allows residents to interact with our police departments and first responders in a relaxed social atmosphere. We usually only meet those in the community during emergency situations. This allows all of us to get to know one another under friendly circumstances, said Event Coordinator Officer Frank Maisano. Members of the Aberdeen, Matawan, Middletown, Holmdel and Somerville Police Departments along with the NJ and Middlesex County Department of Corrections competed against each other in a double-elimination format. Ultimately, the Aberdeen PBA beat the NJ State Department of Corrections.
o
“We played against the NJ State Department of Corrections. Our team, Aberdeen PBA- A Team was the undefeated champions in the Tournament! Our A Team included John Zeller, Anthony Marone, Manny Carabel, Vito Turchiano, and myself,” Maisano said. The Mayor’s Cup Bowling Challenge rounded out the tournament, putting township departments including public works and public safety, against each other. The Cliffwood Fire Company walked away the winner. Police Chief John Powers said he was happy to see such a great turnout and avid support from the community. Aberdeen Police Chief John T. Powers was pleased with the event. “It’s good to have officers from the different departments and the PBA here together,” Powers said.

T
he word “pandemic” is applied to a virus outbreak when it demonstrates the ability to pass efficiently form person-to-person and can spread the virus globally. The current 2014 flu season has officially been classified as a pandemic by the CDC.
Dr. Golding Granado of Immediate Care Medical Walk-In said, “The flu is a very contagious respiratory viral illness – and can cause infection ranging from mild body aches and cough to a more severe illness with pneumonia like symptoms including: cough, body aches, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, headache, fatigue and may also include nausea diarrhea or vomiting.” Complications from the flu include dehydration, pneumonia, asthma flare up, shortness of breath and prolonged fatigue as well as wages lost due to prolonged illness. Dr. Golding Granado, Medical Director at Immediate Care, said she is prepared to treat any flu complications patients may have, including intravenous fluid hydration and early medication management, early treatment are key to successful recovery from the flu. The best prevention is vaccination! The vaccination period for the flu starts in late fall [October] and continues through spring [March] of the following year. The tri-valent or quadra-valent vaccines are equally recommended. It takes about two weeks to develop full immunity, and it’s not too late to get the vaccine this year. Who should get the vaccine? Everyone 6-months of age and older, but especially people who are between 6-months and 5-years and those who are 65+ years or older. If you have a history of Asthma, COPD, recurrent pneumonia, heart disease or diabetes then you should get the vaccine every year as soon as possible. Caregivers, teachers, nannies, or those who work with the public or large groups, anyone who takes public transportation or works in the health care field should also be vaccinated.

Keyport Library Joins Consortium
Now Listing Homes for the 2014 Spring Market! Monmouth /Middlesex County Specializing in Strathmore & Matawan Area
SHAREN LAPORTA

n December 18, 2013, patrons of the Keyport Free Public Library, 109 Broad Street, will gain access to 2.6 million circulation materials and be able to download electronic books, greatly enhancing the Library’s services and its capacity to serve the town’s resident.
This news comes as a result of the Library’s decision, this past September, to join the Libraries of Middlesex Consortium (LMxAC). Though the Consortium originated in Middlesex County, other libraries located in Monmouth County, such as Long Branch, Red Bank, and Matawan/Aberdeen, are existing members. Previously, the Library relied on the traditional index card system. While it had a quaint appeal to some, the Library knew it had to modernize to stay current and remain relevant to today’s patrons. Now, through the Consortium, Keyport Library patrons will receive a new scannable library card and be able to access the LMxAC website at lmxac.org to locate a book by author or title. Books not found at the Keyport Library, but available at other consortium libraries, are held and delivered to the Keyport Library typically within three days. Alternately, patrons can pick them up at the library where the book is located. The LMxAC website explains all the features provided by each library in the consortium.
Pathway to Success
As a result of joining the Consortium, the Library has been very busy digitizing its vast collection of materials and old and seldom checked-out books are being removed in an ongoing process. Additionally, four new replacement computers were added to accommodate LMxAC requirements. The Library has also started reaching out to residents with a new website, keyportlibrary.org, and a new commitment to planning year-round events for all ages. This new events initiative kicked off in October with a Fairy Frolic for kids, Ghost Story and Edgar Allan Poe nights for adults, the addition of a weekly Thursday Story Time and Craft, and through a partnership with Keyport Central School, each first and second grade class heard a story and made a craft with a librarian. Keyport library director, Jackie LaPolla, met with Keyport Public Schools officials to explore ways the library can better collaborate with the schools to improve summer reading, homework help, and class trips to the library in the future. Additionally, the Library has been making other significant renovations and improvements to the buildings and grounds. The old heating system was converted to a new and efficient gas boiler. A storage shed was built behind the library. The gardens surrounding the library were expanded and the trees pruned. The building was given a fresh coat of paint, roofing was repaired, and security lighting installed. Other improvements to the building’s interior appearance and infrastructure are planned for the very near future. For more information, contact Jackie LaPolla at 732.264.0543, email info@keyportnjlib.org or visit keyportlibrary.org. The Library of Middlesex Automation Consortium can be found at lmxac.org.

Debbie Noce, Social Butterfly event planner in Monmouth County.

How Debbie Noce became Monmouth County’s Social Butterfly STORY KAITLYN ANNESS Dr. Robi Ludwig, CNN and Today Show Contributor, and Social Butterfly Debbie Noce.
D
ebbie Noce wasn’t always the outgoing, bubbly person she is today. But when a divorce forced Noce out of her shell and into the world of being social, Noce left the retail world and realized she had a knack for event planning. “My background was retail, I had three clothing stores out of college. After you go through a divorce, things change. I used to be very shy and quiet. Now, I could be in the city, and people say, ‘There she is, Social Butterfly.’” Known throughout the state as The Social Butterfly, Noce has made a name for herself in both the event planning and music industries. “I decided I needed to start a whole new circle of friends, and I didn’t want to always be in a bar. I wanted to put together events for people who were divorced and single who had nothing to do,” Noce said. “The original plan was more or less creating parties and events for all these single people, which snowballed into private affairs and nonprofit events.” Now, Noce has a slew of experience under her belt, enabling her to offer clients the whole package from social networking to corporate affairs. Recently, Noce began planning second weddings, a fitting service to offer considering how Social Butterfly began. “I will not ever do a first time bride. I am booking second weddings, where they know what they want, it’s smaller.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
Most of all, Noce loves bringing people together through her events, and through the music she loves. “There were a lot of friendships formed through the connections of Social Butterfly,” she said. Noce represents local musician Scott Elk, an Ocean Township resident who often plays The Wine Loft in Pier Village, a venue Noce books live music for regularly. “That has become a whole other part of the business,” Noce said. “I have met so many contacts in the music industry, local talent, and I book several acts at certain venues. I love it. I love music.” But when it comes to charitable events, Noce is at the top of her industry. In the last two years, Noce has planned events that raised more than $20,000 for Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen. Social Butterfly has worked with local charities, such as The Ashley Lauren Foundation, to national organizations like the American Cancer Society. Noce said she’s selective, looking for charities which really need the help and benefit deserving people and causes. Living up to her company’s name, the Social Butterfly has flown from event to event, planning intimate gatherings and large parties for people to meet one another and enjoy the atmosphere. “Wherever I go, I just talk to people. I try to bring people together who have nothing to do.” PHOTOS COURTESY OF LISA MARIE KOCH & MTC PHOTOGRAPHY
The Liquid State Embracing the Juicing Craze and All Its Benefits
F
rom greens, to fruits and everything in between, the key to health this year seems to be in liquid form. The juicing craze has been steadily climbing in recent years (Jack LaLanne would be proud), and if you’re not already on the bandwagon, making a habit of liquefying delicious fruits and vegetables could be daunting.
Patty Siciliano, owner of Yummy Good Juice Bar in Red Bank, said juicing is all about what you enjoy.
STORY KAITLYN ANNESS
CLEANSES Yummy Good Juice Bar in Red Bank offers a six-juice cleanse, including melon and beet juices, which help rehydrate and rid your body of toxins. “It’s a standard six juices, but we also would tailor them if the customer needed it,” owner Patty Siciliano said.
“In my eyes, it’s whatever pleases you. It’s kind of like going to a buffet and deciding what you like the most,” she said. “I recommend any fruits and vegetables.”

According to Dr. Woodson Merrell, Chairmen of the Department of Integral Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and author of The Detox Prescription, the benefit of juicing comes from cleansing your body. “It is essential to break the cycle of dependence on saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, and excess caffeine and alcohol,” Woodson said in his Huffington Post blog.
be harder to use.
If you’re not looking to partake in a three-day liquid diet to cleanse your body of toxins, easing slowly into the habit of juicing may be your best bet. Woodson said juices could reduce your appetite, rest your stomach, improve energy and rehydrate your body.
