“Paint & Wine” Keyport PTO Fundraiser STORY LIZZ DINNIGAN

Lately, as you scroll through your Facebook newsfeed, you have probably noticed the proliferation of colorful photos featuring groups of women at various regional art studios, all holding up their own interpretations of the same work of art. These “Paint & Wine” parties are growing in popularity, and Keyport Central School PTO jumped on the bandwagon for its latest fundraiser. Sixteen women came together in early January at a studio in Matawan to each create a take-home canvas painting and help raise a couple hundred dollars to support the PTO. The group chose an abstract piece called “Koi Fish.”

STORY MICHELLE TUCHOL

Survivor,

a

a Warrior.

S

onia Schwartz of Freehold does not consider herself a strong person. But what she doesn’t realize is that she’s so much more. The period of time spent speaking with her about her journey through breast cancer was more than enough to help me understand and empathize with the fact that this seemed like just another phase in life.

“I just did what I had to do,” Sonia says, a testament to her character. On November 22, 2002, she found a lump on her breast and immediately went to get it checked out. In December, when Sonia got the call from her doctor that she had cancer, her life was briefly shattered. She had just gotten home from work, and after she got off the phone, she dropped to her knees and cried. Devastation took hold after thinking about her family; at 34 years old, her husband, at the time, and her 7 yearold son were the biggest concern. Sonia immediately thought the worst and saw her son growing up without a mother.

crossed her mind.

“Did I get sick? Yes, I was sick the whole time. So what?”

Now that her son was older, it was time to do something more for herself. Reconstructive surgery was the boost that Sonia got to help her feel better.

So she pushed on, made changes to her lifestyle, ate healthier and became more active. She feels it was detrimental to her well-being. Sonia also gives credit to her doctors, Dr. Schreiber and Dr. Johnson Miller, who were both extremely helpful and made her feel at ease each step of the way.

“I wasn’t going to be a victim, I was going to be a victor,” she says.

The one choice she did take her time with was the decision to undergo reconstructive surgery. In fact, she waited until 2014 to consult with The Samra Group, a plastic surgery practice specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Sonia’s cancer was very aggressive; it had spread to her lymph nodes and she said there was very little time to reach out for a second opinion with another doctor.

Sonia was nervous at first. But after meeting Dr. Asaad Samra, she felt extremely comfortable. Her breast surgeon had encouraged Sonia to get the surgery years ago, but initially, it never

It also seemed like that was the biggest driving factor for Sonia to pick herself off the floor and get on living.

10

On December 26, 2002, Sonia had a mastectomy on her right breast. Her biggest concern was going through the 16 weeks of chemotherapy, although she said it wasn’t that bad.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

“I was going through so many tests. I wanted to make sure the cancer was eradicated.”

She has no regrets from surgery and couldn’t say enough about Dr. Samra’s warm and welcoming demeanor. “He makes you feel like you’re one of the guys,” adding that she was extremely happy with the process and the manner in which Dr. Samra explained each step to her. Many women see reconstructive surgery as something that must be done after breast cancer. Sonia expresses to other woman that you always have a choice in this matter. “Make up your mind on your own time,” she says, noting that from detection to treatment there is usually a lot to think about during each stage of cancer.

alking into Tapeo, a new Portuguese and Spanish restaurant, it’s clear Hazlet has a new gem. And owner Tony Martinez is ready to share his passion for European cuisine and culture.

“We get to introduce local residents to Spanish food, wine, art…” Martinez said. “It’s a great way to introduce all of Spanish culture. The modern restaurant is simple in its decoration, leaving the spotlight on authentic Spanish and Portuguese dishes. Located in the Holiday Inn on Route 35, Martinez said he inherited the space, completely renovated the hotel bar space and perfected a menu which has been tested in both Spain and America. “We like the idea of taking traditional items and updating them in a very modern way,” Martinez said. “We wanted to find the right balance of something that was familiar, but also introduce new concepts.” Martinez also owns one of the largest cooking schools in Barcelona and got his start in the restaurant business working 12

Tapeo sources its ingredients locally when it can, and imports specialty items from Spain and Portugal through small distributors. Martinez said the restaurant never buys in pieces, and will use ingredients throughout several dishes in order to cut down on wasted food. “We’re thoughtful in how we present our dishes as well as cook our dishes. We want to hold ourselves to a higher standard,” Martinez said. Martinez hopes to use the space as a lunch on Friday and Saturday nights with a live DJ, and continue the fun on Sundays with brunch and international soccer games. “I think of Spain as a cutting edge, forward thinking society that has evolved in so many ways,” Martinez said. “We’re excited to bring that to Hazlet.”

Bayshore Community Hospital Unveils Multi-specialty Interventional Suite Bringing Advanced Minimally Invasive Cardiovascular Care to Your Community Left to right: Cutting the ribbon to commemorate another beautiful beginning at Bayshore: Patrick Delaney, senior manager, operations; Timothy J. Hogan, FACHE, regional hospital president, Monmouth County; Dawn Williams, regional nurse manager, cardiovascular services; Elizabeth Maiorana, director, cardiac services, Meridian Health; Shaddy Younan, M.D., medical director, cardiac catheterization laboratory; John K. Lloyd, FACHE, president of Meridian Health; Janice Mitchell-Vassar, long-time supporter of Bayshore Community Hospital; Serena DiMaso, chair, Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Board; Tony Cava, RPh., FACHE, chief operating officer, Bayshore Community Hospital; Peter Doss, M.D., board certified diagnostic radiologist, Bayshore Community Hospital; Ian B. Leber, M.D., CPE, FACHE, vice president of clinical effectiveness & medical affairs, Bayshore Community Hospital; and Linda Walsh, R.N., vice president & chief nurse executive, Bayshore Community Hospital.

Bayshore Community Hospital recently unveiled its new Multi-specialty Interventional Suite, outfitted with advanced technology capable of performing complex minimally invasive cardiovascular, endovascular, and interventional radiology procedures. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. And, in the event of an emergency, having access to the best intervention in your own community can be a lifesaver. As part of Meridian Cardiovascular Network, Bayshore continues to make advances, such as the addition of this new technology, to bring the best cardiovascular care to the local community. In the past year, Bayshore also received approval from the Department of Health as a Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Hospital to provide emergency angioplasty procedures on patients experiencing a heart attack.

Additionally, Bayshore, along with the other four hospitals of Meridian Health, became an Accredited Chest Pain Center, making Meridian Health the first system in New Jersey to achieve this status. Funded in part through a generous gift from Janice Mitchell-Vassar, the new Multi-specialty Interventional Suite provides physicians with the technology to do what they do best to treat heart disease as well as other many other diseases and conditions with life-saving endovascular and radiologic interventions. “This new technology offers patients advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options in a comfortable setting,” says Shaddy Younan, M.D., medical director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Bayshore. “The increased detail and clarity of this new technology now available at Bayshore means local residents won’t have to travel to receive high quality care. The Bayshore team will now offer an en-

hanced experience for patients and the community.” According to Tim Hogan, FACHE, regional hospital president, Monmouth County, “The opening of the Multi-specialty Interventional Suite provides our community with immediate access to the best cardiovascular intervention as well as a direct connection to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the regional provider of cardiac surgery, in the event that cardiac surgery is required.” Arlene Schutzer of Aberdeen experienced Bayshore’s care this past Mother’s Day when Dr. Younan saved her life by restoring blood flow to her heart through an emergency angioplasty. “The care everyone provided me was phenomenal. Everyone was attentive and kind,” Arlene says. “I am lucky that Bayshore is so close.”

TREATS for your

SWEETIE Valentine’s Day

PROVIDED BY VERONICA HOFFMAN

February is upon us! The “season of love” is one of the sweetest times of year—for lovers & bakers alike. There are as many perfect pairs in the baking world as in the real world, from unique and quirky to classic. As always, I’m proposing a home-made treat, whether you’re going to share it exclusively with your significant other or with friends and family. So ditch the flowers and trash the chocolates this year because there are some sweeter ways to commemorate your perfect pair than with the expected and boring cannon traditions. One of the most beautiful parts of love is that it’s always unique. Every pair, every relationship and every friendship is a different experience for the parties involved. There are certain base qualities that let these individual dynamics shine through, like respect and kindness. Much in the spirit of the uniqueness of a perfect pair, the recipe suggestions below all start with a solid foundation and have a list of possible ingredients to mix and match – to create treats as unique and custom as your relationship with your partner. Here is a base recipe, which you can mix and match options from the “flavors” list to create fun and quirky combinations. Go with traditional combinations like white chocolate raspberry or with something a little different like cayenne and dark chocolate. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

ACARONI AND CHEESE – IT’S EVERYONE’S FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD.

DEARBORN MARKET Hosts 4th Annual Cook-off to Benefit Bridges Outreach

And although this timeless recipe may seem simple, today’s trendiest restaurants and chefs are putting their own creative spin on this classic. Locals were able to enter their Macaroni & Cheese recipe online or in-store at Dearborn Market and then brought samples of their cooked recipe to the store on January 18, 2015 that was judged by a panel of foodies that included, Frank Luccarelli, President of Dearborn Market; Kathy Logan, BRIDGES Outreach; and Dearborn Market’s Deli Manager Paul Tatarian. The public was invited to sample all the Macaroni & Cheese dishes to vote for the Customer Choice Award. Winner of the Cooking Challenge received a $100 Dearborn Market gift card, an official trophy, and their winning recipe will be featured in Dearborn Market’s March Almanac. The winners of the event included three locals: Lori Davidson of Keyport took first place, Amla Khare of Middletown took second place and Jeremy Adams of Holmdel took third place. The Customer Choice Award was also presented to third place winner Jeremy Adams of Holmdel.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Jeremy Adams of Holmdel (third place), Amla Khare of Middletown (second place), Lori Davison of Keyport (first place), Bridges Director Kathy Logan and Dearborn Market owner Frank Luccarelli.

There was a $20 entry fee that was donated directly to the BRIDGES Program. The event took place in the state-of-the-art 11,000 square foot greenhouse, and it was a delicious afternoon for an incredible worthy cause. Dearborn Market supports the BRIDGES at the Shore Program throughout the year. In addition to the cooking competition, they sponsor a coat drive each December and help with lunch supplies for the program’s bi-monthly distribution. BRIDGES at the Shore distributes necessities to those in need in Keyport, Freehold, and Red Bank as well as other Bayshore towns. Kathly Logan said, “Dearborn Market and the Luccarelli Family are generous supporters of the BRIDGES at the Shore Program. If BRIDGES needs help any time during the year, we know all we have to do is ask Dearborn because they are ready to do whatever they can."

New IHOP Owner Continues Tradition of Giving Sayegh knows the ins and outs of owning an IHOP. “[The Moores] really did a hell of a job, I have nothing but the utmost respect for how they built this business,” Sayegh said.

STORY KAITLYN ANNESS

Jack Sayegh isn’t new to the food industry, so when the opportunity to buy a well-established brand like the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) came up, he knew he had to take it. “Everyone loves pancakes, you can’t go wrong. People love to eat.” Sayegh took over the Keyport IHOP on Jan. 5, buying the business from longtime owner and area entrepreneur Cliff Moore. Sayegh said Moore has been helping through the transition, making sure

A young North Jersey native, Sayegh’s family also owns an independent chain of movie theaters called CJM Cinemas. Sayegh has also owned catering businesses. “[IHOP] has been exciting. It feels like I can breathe for the first time in 17 months,” Sayegh said. “I’ve been in restaurants for 10 or 12 years, I definitely know how they run. I came up from washing dishes.” With such an established name and location, Sayegh said he isn’t looking to make any changes but he’s always looking to improve. The Keyport IHOP still features Senior Day on Wednesdays and Kids Eat Free on Fridays. Any community involvement IHOP had previously will likely continue, and Sayegh

said the business will sponsor local sports teams and continue charitable donations and efforts. And that sentiment rang true as soon as Sayegh took over the IHOP. Longtime waitress Joy Connolly, known well by regular IHOP patrons, was diagnosed with cancer. As 45-year-old Connolly, the caregiver to a young grandson, struggled with her diagnosis, her coworkers began fundraising to offset medical expenses. Sayegh said he’s helping to coordinate the efforts of the staff, and encouraging everyone’s generosity. “At the end of the day, everybody is family and I know how important that is.” Anyone looking to donate to help offset Connolly’s medical expenses can visit the GoFundMe page at www.gofundme. com/jr91hk. IHOP lovers can visit the Keyport IHOP Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ KeyportIHOP25Hours.
