I’m IMPORTANT
I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”
The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

Bob Both of the Jersey Shore Running Club said their group began almost 25 years ago, meeting at a running store in Downtown Red Bank. The JSRC now has over 1,000 members.
“We’ve been faced with a couple challenges due to the hurricanes, but we seem to work around that,” Both said. The group participates in group runs and statewide races, as well as running their own charitable events such as the Run-A-Palooza in Asbury Park. Last year the club raised $15,000 for Sandy Relief, and another $50,000 for the Special Olympics of New Jersey. “When we first started, we had maybe 20 or 30 members. Then, we just grew and grew,” Both said. The Jersey Shore Running Club meets for regular runs in Middletown, Long Branch and Belmar, and now has between 1,200 and 1,500 members in Monmouth County. Membership is $15 for one year and $42 for three years, with an added bonus of member discounts for area businesses like The Running Store in Shrewsbury. The JSRC will host Run-A-Palooza on April 26 in Asbury Park. More information about the club and a race schedule can be found at www. jsrc.org. Photos courtesy of The Jersey Shore Running Club.

ou wouldn’t know this, but this column is compiled from over a month of reminder texts I send to myself of topics I would like to write about. My hectic life and career can really be overwhelming at times, but I enjoy every minute of it. I spend a lot of time talking to people on a monthly basis, whether it be about their marketing strategies, a great story we need to get in the magazine, or just about their personal lives.
is all about the communities we live in (and to boot, really amazing co-workers). I get to meet and socialize with some very interesting human beings, and a lot of characters – and that makes my ‘job’ so worth it!
ng is Around the Corner... We Promise!
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the communities we deliver to, to all the readers who email us invaluable information and comments on a daily basis to Community Magazine (CM), to all the residents who say we are their “favorite coffee table book” – and most importantly, to all our advertisers - our partners who choose us every month as their marketing vehicle – WE THANK YOU!

Fundraiser For Keyport Fire Department St. Patrick’s Day Parade A Success STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Left to right: Keyport St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee gathered at a fundraiser held at McDonagh’s Pub on February 18, 2014. They were Harry Aumack, Parade Chairman Hank Young, Ken Lawlor, Deputy Grand Marshall Patti Piney, Grand Marshall Cliff Moore, Police Chef George Casaletto, Jacqueline Kovacs-Olsen, and Councilwoman Joy-Michele Tomczak. Absent from the photo is parade committee member Tom Gallo.
L
ive music in true Irish style filled McDonagh’s Pub on February 17 and helped kick off a fundraiser for the upcoming Keyport Fire Department’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Guests paid a $10 charge that included a free glass of beer or wine and a small buffet. About 180 guests attended, said Parade Chairman Hank Young, who has been chairing the event for five years. “This was our first fundraiser for the Parade and we had a good turnout. Everyone had a great time.” Grand Marshal Cliff Moore said, “It’s an honor to be recognized by the township. Thanks to all those who came out and supported this event which helped to make it a success.” Councilwoman Joy-Michele Tomczak, who is also on the Parade Committee, said, “We are trying to promote more involvement and bigger floats for the Parade this year. There will be more trophies and awards as well as some new categories.” Local businesses donated items for a raffle that took place throughout the evening. Items included four children’s bikes; a barbeque grill; a Guinness sign; ten Guinness pint glasses; a golf bag; and a Budweiser beer cooler. Commemorative t-shirts, sponsored by families and businesses in town, were to be ready for purchase at the beginning of March.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
The Parade Committees’ final event before the parade will be March 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Consolidated Fire House on First Street. A $15 fee for admission includes beer and light refreshments. Food is being donated by sponsoring restaurants. Gift baskets and certificates from local businesses will be raffled off at that time. This is a guest and “local celebrity” bartender night, so look for a few surprise faces serving behind the bar. Chairman Hank Young said some of the floats and people marching in the Keyport Fire Department St. Patrick’s Day Parade will include five Pipe and Drum bands, both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Keyport Garden Club, the Keyport Indians’ football team and cheerleaders, the Republican and Democratic Clubs, the Masons of Keyport, the Keyport and Matawan Elks, and the Knights of Columbus. Congressman Frank Pallone is expected to march in the parade. There will be antique cars and participation by neighboring firehouses. Broad Street to Main Street will be closed until 6:00 p.m. during the event. There will be a dance group from Hazlet performing in from of McDonagh’s Pub at 1:00 p.m. and live music at the mini park along West Front Street. “I’ve been honored to help Parade Chairman and Keyport Fireman Hank Young and the rest of the committee
for three years now and I’m very proud of the parade that we organize. We hope to make this parade the best,” said Councilwoman Tomczak. “We celebrate Irish heritage and recognize and applaud our amazing volunteer services who are featured prominently in the parade. There is no better way to celebrate as a community. I’m so proud that we are able to bring a free event that draws crowds into our historic town and I enjoy the day of celebration that it has become. It is worth all the months of work and preparation that go into this to make sure it is well organized, safe and above all a fun day for everyone.” The Keyport Fire Department will host their ninth annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

Skip the supermarket and cancel the sitter, go ahead and prepare for a dining experience the whole family can enjoy (we’re not joking). We asked our subscribers to vote for their favorite place to take the kiddos for a bite and we’ve put together a list of family friendly restaurants we love. So grab the kiddos and head out for a dinner you’re sure to enjoy while the kids are entertained! These restaurants will welcome your little ones with open arms (yep, really) and let you and your other half enjoy a night out, good food, and maybe even an adult beverage or two!
1. Barnacle Bill’s, Rumson This is hands-down one of everyone’s favorite on the Navesink. Even though it might not have a separate kids’ menu, there are more than enough options from pasta to chicken fingers to please every picky eater. The place has a fun vibe and is loud (translation: no one notices your toddler’s pre-entrée meltdown). The dining room is always full of families, and don’t forget the quarters, the video games will keep them occupied while Mom and Dad sip on a tasty beverage.
2. Pop’s Garage, The Grove West, Shrewsbury Trying to bring family time back to the dinner table, Pops most recently was offering 10% off the bill if you check your mobile phones at the door for a phone-free meal with your loved ones! Pop’s Garage brings the laid-back cuisine and culture of Mexico straight to New Jersey families. They infuse surf, art, culture and community into every delicious bite. They also offer special events specifically for kids from time to time like their sold out kid’s New Year’s Eve Party (which takes place in the afternoon) so be sure to check-in regularly. Oh, and more often than not, you’ll see “Pop” handing out balloons to all of the kiddos at the restaurant. Visit them in Asbury Park or Normandy Beach in the warmer weather months too!
3. Moose’s Tavern, Tinton Falls The Moose is on the loose in Tinton Falls! With a vast burger menu, yummy apps from traditional wings to crab rangoon dip and potstickers and everything in between, you’ll be sure to find something to tickle your taste buds. And the Moose offers a kid’s menus with faves from grilled cheese to chix nuggets, but for the more adventurous eater, it also includes steak, corn dogs and more! Did we mention, all kids meals come with an

ice cream sundae at the end? And if that’s not enough, join in the fun on Mondays for a special family friendly night dedicated to your pint size friends. There might be face painting, glitter tattoos, balloons and more!
4. New Monmouth Diner, Middletown HulaMoms love taking the family to this traditional diner that serves up a little something extra for the kids. On Monday’s from 5:00 – 8:00p.m. it is character night where your lil ones might just get to meet a princess or someone else magical. The added bonus for getting out on a Monday is that kids eat free with a paying adult. At the end of every meal, kids who did a good job (wink, wink) get to pick a prize out of the “treasure basket”.
5. Molly Maguire’s Gastropub, Rumson This cozy Irish pub has turned into a staple in the two rivers neighborhood. And given the whole pub vibe, most of the food here is appealing to kids, making for a tantrum free meal (hopefully). The wee ones can even choose off of their own menu with some yummy classics like pizza, burgers & dogs, mac n’ cheese and more. There is a lively and family friendly atmosphere with large booths and lots of TVs, which are perfect for corralling and entertaining the tykes.
6. Joe’s Crab Shack, Eatontown Lobsters, Shrimp and Clams oh my! They’ve got all kinds of tasty fish and lots of “clam bake” type steampots to choose from at Joe’s, but don’t worry, if your kids don’t think fish is delish, they have some classic kid faves too! The wait staff will keep your whole clan entertained as they break into song and dance periodically! And stop the presses… they also have an outdoor playground! That’s right grab a table and let your kids play while you sit back and enjoy some grown-up time.
7. Red Oak Diner & Lounge, Hazlet With a kid’s menu and lots of diner staples, the Red Oak is always family friendly, but Tuesday night is definitely kid’s night. Every week from 5:00 – 8:00p.m. a different character pays a visit. From Barbie to Superheroes to Sophia the First, you never know who you’re going to meet! There’s also a family friendly movie playing, as well as popcorn, cookies and balloons for pint size patrons. Oh and did we mention that kids also eat free with a paying adult on Tuesday?
8. Hibachi, various locations Get ready for a hip alternative to chicken fingers and fries with hibachi and sushi! Not only will you get a great meal, but kids will love to sit around the hibachi table and watch the show that the chef puts on, slicing, dicing and doing fun tricks. Some of our favorites include: Kanji, Tinton Falls; Sawa, Eatontown & Pier Village in Long Branch; Fuji, Shrewsbury; and last but not least, Kyoto Sushi & Hibachi, Atlantic Highlands.
9. Shaka, Pier Village, Long Branch Go ahead and kick it Hawaiian style. Your mouths will be watering over the burritos, quesadillas and a trip to Shaka is not complete without the genuine Hawaiian shaved ice. No worries if your little dudes and dudettes aren’t digging the island style meals, they have the traditional mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, etc… Even better to the parents delight, their meals are served with apple slices or baby carrots and tortillas. And note to the ‘rents: Shaka supplies the bucket and ice, but bring your own brew!

10. Bertucci’s, Hazlet Pizza is almost always a hit with the kids and there is no exception to that rule at Bertucci’s. They round out their kid’s menu with offerings that include ravioli, grilled cheese, chicken cutlets and lots of other yum yums! A well-known highlight is that your little guys & gals will be occupied throughout with the piece of dough they get to roll out and play with it! And if you wanna make a day or a night out of it, the Hazlet movie theater is conveniently located in the same parking lot!

Bayshore Appliance Evolves After SUPERSTORM SANDY

hen Superstorm Sandy hit the Bayshore area, Melanie Meyer’s Keyport appliance store was washed away. Years of serving the area were suddenly wiped with the surge of the tide, and the strength of Sandy left long lasting damage that in 2014 is still being addressed. “I had to downsize to half of what my business once was,” Meyer said. “FEMA doesn’t businesses at all, they want you to get an SBA loan and I didn’t want another bill to pay, so I walked away from my store.” Bayshore Appliance found a new home, on Route 36 in Hazlet just south of Airport Plaza. Meyer and her family began rebuilding their business, and for a while her services were in high demand. “Everyone needed new appliances about a month after Sandy, but insurance companies would only cut checks to big stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot. Our business started to hurt really, really bad.” Since Sandy, Meyer has been actively transforming her business. Bayshore Appliance sells used appliances and parts but now Meyer said she’ll begin selling new appliance

from the top retailers including Maytag, Whirlpool and Weber. “This area is becoming new after the storm. We needed to change to.” Now that Meyer finds herself in direct competition with the big stores, she said her goal is to continue a level of customer service that isn’t found in larger retailers. “The knowledge that small businesses have on their product is so much better than a big box store. This is our life. There aren’t specially trained professionals in big box stores. I live here, this is what I do, I do nothing but appliances. That goes for any small business.” As Bayshore Appliance, which has been in business since 1975, revamps its showroom to showcase both new and used appliances, Meyer said she will continue look at ways her business can evolve to best serve her customer base. Meyer said, “I rely on my knowledge to guide my customers. If they pick out an appliance I know wouldn’t look good in their kitchen, I’ll tell them. I’d rather you be happy than sell you the most expensive piece in my store.”

Well-qualified taste-testers for the event were President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli, Coordinator of Bridges Outreach Kathy Logan, and owner of Anna’s Italian Kitchen (Middletown) Anna Perry. All customers were asked to vote for Customer’s Choice Award. “It was definitely a challenge for us as judges,” noted Logan. She expressed her gratitude for the year-long support by the Luccarelli family and Dearborn Market and thanked everyone for their generosity in assisting Bridges through their donations. Third place was Joseph Bove of Ocean Township who had made his mother’s recipe. “This was fun and a great community event,” he said. Second place was Lori Carscadden of Keansburg whose recipe was gluten-free, dairy-free and contained chicken – no meat. First place was Gloria Arcuri of Manalapan who used chopped veal seasoned with a low sodium salt. Arcuri also won the Customer Choice Award. Her winning recipe will be featured in the March Almanac at Dearborn Market, and will receive a $100 Dearborn Market gift card.
Most of the “chefs” who participated in the “Sunday Gravy” Cooking Challenge at Dearborn Market on January 26, 2014 gather for a photo after sharing their special recipes with those who attended the event.

Entries in the “Sunday Gravy” Cooking Challenge were diversified and some recipes were revamped to meet the needs of anyone wanting a low-sodium, dairy-free recipe. All who participated and attended had a great time.

iwanis Club of Keyport welcomed over 100 guests to their Comedy Night fundraiser on January 24 at the Town & Country Inn in Keyport. Three comedians from Comedy Blast Inc. provided the entertainment. Friends and family of Keyport Kiwanis’ members, as well as several members from the Holmdel Kiwanis Club enjoyed light refreshments and the opportunity to win a door prize. A separate raffle was held for a Snap-
On tool jacket donated by a Keyport Kiwanis Club member. “The support by everyone attending this fundraiser allows us to continue offering support to the people in our community, to be able to offer scholarships, and to have a little fun,” explained President Mike Ellithorpe. He noted that some of those who received support have been Manna House, Keyport First Aid, Bayshore Food Program, and the ELIMINATE Project, which
is focused on eliminating maternal and neo-natal tetanus. President Ellithorpe added that a local family impacted by Superstorm Sandy was finally able to return to their home through the help of the NJ District Kiwanis and the Kiwanis Club of Keyport. Upcoming for this organization is a Fish Fry on March 5 and a Chicken Fry on April 28; both are from 12:00 to 8:00p.m. and will be held at the Town & Country Inn, Keyport.

I AM MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS BY JULIANNE DODS, VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS
H
ealthy, sustainable weight loss is a lifelong journey that begins with a commitment to yourself and a realistic plan. As fitness professionals, we know that a sound, balanced weight management program must bring together three critical components for success: nutrition, exercise and a permanent lifestyle change. Making the decision to lose weight is the first step towards transforming your life and it’s also a step that Robin Warren, 46, of Parlin, NJ, has taken several times. “I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I would gain 25-35 pounds, lose it and then gain it back again. I yo-yoed like that for years,” says Robin. It’s natural for those battling weight issues and obesity to want results quickly. However, evidence shows that those who lose weight gradually are more successful at keeping it off. “I worked out every day, but I didn’t change my dietary habits,” says Robin. “My work schedule is quite hectic so, rather than eating a nice meal at home, I would go out for fast food – for breakfast, lunch and dinner.” Not to mention her six-pack-of-soda-a-day habit and daily trips to the vending machine, Robin’s weight quickly reached 260 pounds. “I had never been that heavy before and I had no idea how to go about losing the weight.”
in Hazlet, with a renewed sense of motivation. “I wasn’t ready to start taking Group Exercise classes at that point, so I started out by walking on the treadmill for 45 minutes a day. Every week I would add another 10 minutes to my routine. By May I had lost 35 pounds, but I realized my routine wasn’t going to garner the results I was looking for. It was comfortable, safe - and it was time to challenge myself more.” With her newfound confidence, Robin began taking Group Exercise classes regularly. A favorite was Les Mills BodyCombat™, a fiercely energetic program that is inspired by martial arts movements and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as Karate, Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, and Muay Thai. “My first BodyCombat™ class was hard. I was selfconscious of the other people in the room so I stayed to the back of the class and did my best to keep up. By the end, I was so out of breath I had to sit in the locker room for 20 minutes to keep my legs from shaking. The next day, I did it again.” Robin continued to walk daily; she added Step Aerobics into her Group Exercise routine and tried other classes along the way. While she enjoys many of the classes offered at Meridian Fitness & Wellness, she says she ‘just can’t live without’ Spin or BodyCombat™. “I enjoy Group Exercise classes because you don’t feel alone. The instructors are motivating and the energy of the other participants is contagious.” By January 2010, Robin had lost 85 pounds. There were a few plateaus and road bumps along the way, but by the fall of 2013, Robin had lost a total of 105 pounds. “Looking back, I realize I did it by starting off small; making a decision and planning for my success and setbacks,” says Robin. “This was not a diet or a quick fix workout plan, this was a lifestyle change for me and the programming and

Robin wrote down all of the reasons she failed to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the past and a plan to overcome those barriers in the future. Food was her crutch. Ten breathtaking homes will be featured, from a beautifully renovated farmhouse kitchen to the latest design trends in newly constructed homes and a magnificent 31,000 sq. ft. grand estate. In addition to being awed by the expert interior designers and consultants who helped to bring these homes to life, tour participants can wet their appetite with scrumptious tastings from top area chefs. Each home will feature an elegant table scape to be raffled off at the end of the tour. “We are excited to host this wonderful event in the Spring this year,” said Pam Molloy, Colts Neck PTO President. “It’s such a beautiful time to visit Colts Neck, explore these lovely homes, and see all the beauty our town has to offer both inside and out. The tour features extraordinary homes, each with unique details that will surely inspire all who attend.” Highlights of the tour include whole house transformations, culturally inspired architecture, dazzling new construction, and unparalleled estate homes. Participants can visit the kitchen of cookbook author Hina Balar and see where her culinary creations become reality. Balar is the co-author of “The Ingredients Matter: India” with Urmi M. Details on all of the exquisite kitchens can be found in the tour program, which attendees will receive as their ticket to the event. The program will provide information on the talented builders, craftsman and designers who conceived each kitchen’s function and beauty to make them a stunning reality for the homeowners. Docents will be on hand to answer questions. In each home on the tour, participants will be offered tastings from local chefs and eateries, including the renowned cuisine of Restaurant Nicholas of Red Bank, rustic Italian flavors of Via 45 of Red Bank; the culinary flair of Chef Michael Thompson of Chef Michael’s Café of Wall; sweet treats from DOCO The Donut and Coffee Company of Farmingdale, and many other savory and mouth-watering morsels from area top chefs.
